I’m following Tsuchiya Simba on Instagram but not on Twitter. Earlier he uploaded a story - 

and I immediately noticed the shirt in the background and knew straight away that this was Chiaki! (I obv cropped here half of the photo, to not make it a long post).

I recognized the shirt because he’s worn it for a recent Blue Monologue radio! 

And now I checked Chiaki’s mentions on Twitter and saw Simba tweeted photos of him around the time he uploaded the story!! 

Ah~ So cute!! 

In short: a pat on the back because I knew Chiaki was really there just from that glimpse of that shirt I only saw once XD

as we know, epel felmier wanted to join the savanaclaw dorm at first, but the mirror said for him to go to pomefiore. tsuchiya shimba, who is the voice actor for epel, got his first name from simba from the lion king!! he also has a doggy named epel in private, which shows how much he cares for the character he plays 🥰🍎💜

all of these actors are around the girls’ ages so it can be assumed they are classmates/friends or even other idols? though from his name sou is likely mao’s brother

Epel's VA Tsuchiya Simba talking about his love for Epel!

He said he did not audition for Epel originally: since he was named after Simba from the Lion King he wanted to voice a character in Savanaclaw, but he was offered a character that wants to be in Savanaclaw, instead.

He says he struggled with how cute Epel should sound and his acting has evolved over the years as he has learned how to make Epel sound accidentally cute.

He got a dog that he named Epel Felmier (full name) before the game released, saying that he wanted to tie the character to his life forever.

He also talked about Twst Fes, and how he, Vil’s VA and Rook’s VA practiced their greetings for the audience so much that Riddle’s VA started teasing them.

He said that, back stage, the different dorms all decided that they wanted to be the ones to get the biggest reaction from the audience.

Pomefiore’s three VAs ended up using the “Pom Pom” gesture from the exhibition intro video hosted by Epel and Vil’s VAs, it was very cute.

Seiyuu Birthday: Epel's Tsuchiya Simba

Happy Birthday to Epel's VA Tsuchiya Simba!

Recently Tsuchiya has voiced Kimura Reo in “The Seven Voice Museum” anime with Ortho’s VA Aoi Shouta as Arata Hikari and Vargas’ VA Takeuchi Ryouta as Yamagawa Rimuto.

Tsuchiya has also voiced Saeki Nao in Ao no Orchestra, Konno Kazuyuki in season 2 of In/Spectre and he is also in animated movie “Gridman Universe” (released in theaters on March 24th) with Crewel’s VA Ito Kent.

He also voiced Goshiki Tsutomi in Haikyuu!! with Floyd's VA Okamoto and Idia's VA Uchiyama, as well as main protagonist Fujita Tatara in Welcome to the Ballroom.

In mid-February he performed on stage with group FUKAIPRODUCE-hagoromo in “Platonic Body Scrum."

In 2022 he appeared as a guest in episodes 30 and 31 of Deuce’s VA Kobayashi Chiaki’s “Blue Monologue."

Tsuchiya has a pet dog that he has named Epel

Thus far he has appeared in two Twisted Wonderland Exhibition promotional videos with Vil’s VA Aiba Hiroki.

In a promotion for “The Seven Voice Museum” anime he explains what he would do if a robber invaded his house: “I have a dog whom I love very much and I imagine he would bark, but he loves people…so that would be a problem. If the robber kicked my dog I would beat them up. But if the robber thought that my dog was cute, then…if I had eggs in my refrigerator I would make omelette rice for them and listen to what they have to say. I would give them a DVD from a series that I am in. Tell them, ‘Hey, watch this and cheer up.’"

Epel and Vil's VAs Introduce the Twisted Wonderland Exhibition

Epel’s VA Tsuchiya Simba was named after Simba from Disney’s Lion King, so he was excited by the Savanaclaw area ww

In their first video (the fourth installment overall), the two VA discuss recording for the game, with Tsuchiya saying he intentionally went in early to record Absolutely Beautiful because he hoped to hear Vil’s Aiba Hiroki sing (they all record separately), but Aiba was done by the time he arrived.

(Beware of spoilers: at one point the two seiyuu have an entire conversation standing directly in front of the designs for the Book 6 overblot)

In their second video they discuss the intricacies of Vil’s dorm uniform and how their performances have changed along with the evolution of their characters.

Meet the Seiyuu: Epel Felmier

Epel Felmier is voiced by Tsuchiya Simba, who has explained in interviews that he was literally named after Simba from The Lion King.

In Twisted Wonderland, he voices a character who idolizes Leona Kingscholar, who was based on Scar.

Tsuchiya was inspired to begin voice acting after meeting Miyano Mamoru, voice of Death Note’s Light Yagami. Miyano currently appears in the “Ultraman Zero” TV series with Tsuchiya’s second-oldest sister, Tsuchiya Tao. His oldest sister, Tsuchiya Honoka, is Miss Japan 2019.

Tsuchiya won a “Best New Voice Actor” award in 2021 and his past roles include Kokubo Kouhei in Shoot! Goal to the Future, Nakamura Kai in The Aquatope on White Sand and Futaba Shoutarou in Backflip!!.

Epel is only his 4th-ever lead character role (of, currently, 16).

Here is a TV show where Tsuchiya and Trey's actor Suzuki try to guess the top five best “deep voiced” actors of their industry. Umehara Yuuichirou, voice of Leona, is in the top 5. The third host is Takeuchi Shunsuke, voice of Olaf in the Japan dub.

Did Umehara say who he originally tried out for? Or just that he tried out for someone else?

I have not been able to find an interview where he says who he originally tried out for yet!

It is not uncommon for the seiyuu to mention that they actually tried out for other characters, but whenever the topic comes up they usually temper the question with, "You don't have to say who you auditioned for if you'd rather not," so I think it can be something of a delicate topic in the industry for seiyuu to discuss who they lost roles to.

Epel's VA Tsuchiya also says that he did not audition for Epel!

In the following video he explains that he auditioned for many characters but he'd actually wanted to voice a character in Savanaclaw, because he was named after Simba from The Lion King.

At Anime Japan 2019's Twisted Wonderland stage, we learned that:

・Ace's Yamashita auditioned for both Deuce and Ace

・Deuce's Kobayashi auditioned for both Deuce and Ace

・Trey's Suzuki auditioned for both Trey and Deuce

・Cater's Kobayashi auditioned both for Cater and for another character but he does not specify who, as the game had yet to be released and only the members of Heartslabyul and Malleus had been revealed.

While the video cannot be shared because of ABEMA restrictions, during Twst Channel's first Halloween livestream we learned that Crewel's Ito also auditioned for someone else, and was later offered Crewel, instead!

While I have not yet been able to find Leona's Umehara confirming what character he did audition for I personally suspected it might have been Malleus, but in a special appearance of Malleus' VA Kato on Lilia's Midorikawa's monthly livestream he said that not only did he not audition for Malleus, but Malleus wasn't even an option amongst the characters that were available!

Malleus' Kato also does not share what character(s) he originally auditioned for.

It is interesting that Malleus, Leona, Epel and Crewel were all offered directly to VAs that did not audition for them.

Bonus:

During the first Halloween edition of Twst Channel the seiyuu were asked who, if anyone, was their oshi character outside of the character they themselves voice. Here are the results!

・Jack's VA -> Epel oshi ・Ruggie's VA -> Idia and Sebek oshi ・Sebek's VA -> Malleus oshi ・Silver's VA -> Idia oshi (It is well known that Silver's VA Shimazaki adores Idia, to the point that Ruggie's VA apologizes to him for also having Idia as an oshi character)

Hey, I love your blog!! Your posts are always so informative and interesting. I just saw the post you made about Epel's accent and it reminded me that I tried looking into this myself when I first got into the game because as someone from the southern US, I didn't dislike Vil but I did have… issues with his treatment of Epel's accent because of how it was localized lol. I read a lot at the time about how, as you said, he's not speaking politely and also doesn't always use honorifics when he should. But I also recall seeing someone say that apparently Epel speaks Tsugaru dialect in Japanese, which is so unique and genuinely difficult for other Japanese speakers to understand that they need subtitles and such for it on TV, so people who speak it often need to learn the standard dialect to use in professional settings and such? Is it true that this is part of the problem Vil has with it as well?

Yes! I have been told that Epel's VA Tsuchiya Simba has said that Epel's dialect is a mix of several different dialects, but I have yet to be able to find the interview or video where he says this :<

What we know for a fact is that Epel says tange-me at one point, which is from the Tsugaru dialect!

As you have pointed out (and as Wikipedia explains), the Tsugaru dialect is famous for being so divergent from standard Japanese that even people from the same area can have trouble understanding it.

And I had the same thought that you did! :> It is possible that part of Vil's problem is that Epel speaking in his dialect at NRC is the equivalent to speaking in a secret language and just expecting everyone to understand him, which Vil might view as impolite.

Since that point has not been said outright in the game and I try my best to only post things that can be proven with a screenshot to this blog I removed it from my earlier post on Epel's dialect, but it seems possible! :> I am so glad I am not the only one who had the thought!

First: Backflip!

The protagonist's school is in Miyagi prefecture, and the voice actors in common are:

Tsuchiya Simba (Goshiki), Ishikawa Kaito (Kageyama), Kamiya Hiroshi (Takeda-sensei/Akashi), Sakurai Takahiro (Tsukishima's brother), Murase Ayumu (Hinata), and Ono Daisuke (Midorima)!

Not Miyagi, but they've got Saitō Sōma (Yamaguchi) (in Aomori prefecture), and Suzumura Kenichi (Murasakibara) from KnB.

(Fun fact about Backflip!:

One of the original soundtrack composers of Haikyuu!!, Hayashi Yūki, composed the songs for this anime.

His other works include Boku no Hero Academia/My Hero Academia, Welcome to the Ballroom, Dive!!, Diabolik Lovers, the live-action of Ao Haru Ride, and One Piece Film: Gold. Fair warning though; I haven't watched most of these shows, but I love his music!)
