( renee rapp. cis fem (?). she/her. ) - let me introduce you to a member of the eversley family, charlotte eversley is the middle daughter. they are twenty-six and are known as the queen bee to the family because they are obsessive, clever, and cruel when you get to know them, you think about legally binding contracts signed in glitter gel pen; the constant struggle between imposter syndrome and god complex but they’re still an eversley, nonetheless.
ORIGINS & FAMILY:
Name: Charlotte Alexandria Eversley
Nickname: Lottie, Lots, Char, Charlie (at your own risk)
Birthday: May 7, 1998
Place of Birth: Eversley Estate, Hampshire, England
Places Lived Since: Oxford, UK; Leiden, NL; Cambridge, US; London, UK
Current Residence: London, in a townhouse absolutely paid for by her father
Notable Family Members: Hazelnut Eversley ( child, 2 year old standard poodle ); Daphne Eversley ( twin sister, best friend ); Adrian Eversley ( older brother ); Imogen Eversley ( older sister ); Hector Eversley ( oldest brother ); Charles Eversley ( father, idolizes ); Ignes Eversley ( mother, pities )
PHYSICAL:
Faceclaim: Reneé Rapp
Height: 5’7
Build: curvy
Hair Color: blonde
Eye Color: blue
Jewelry? Tattoos? Piercings?: always wearing one of her father’s old watches, several piercings in both ears, a good amount of tattoos ( will be expanded upon )
Unique Mannerisms/Physical Habits: playing with her hair when anxious, drumming her nails, being cruel for sport
PERSONALITY:
Occupation: lawyer for her father’s company
Education: Law Degree from Oxford University, LLM from Harvard Law School
Languages Spoken: English, French, passable Dutch, Latin because she’s annoying
Positive Traits: outgoing, ambitious, dedicated, meticulous, clever
Negative Traits: obsessive, manipulative, vindictive, cruel, arrogant
Likes: iced coffee, glitter gel pens, the oxford comma, a particularly tricky legal argument, early 2000s chick flicks, singing chappell roan after three espresso martinis at karaoke
Dislikes: sloppy writing, boston as a concept, playing nice, the legal ambiguity of working for your father, birds kept as pets, losing at anything, being lied to
Aesthetic: perfectly crafted citations; falling asleep to the comforting sounds of the city; fighting dirty, because you don’t know any other way; a turning page in a silent library; your father is the worst man alive, you are his favorite daughter; the sound of expensive heels across marble lobbies; is it worse to be doomed by the narrative, or haunted by it?
HISTORY:
The fourth child, the second daughter, the older twin – she’s nearly as middle as a middle child could be. And yet she’s the one gifted a variation of her father’s name. Perhaps it's a coincidence, or Ignes merely liked the name – Lottie doesn’t know, she wasn’t fully conscious yet at the time of her naming. But it matters. It has to matter – names carry meaning, to name something is to grant it power, worth. Charlotte’s spent her entire life trying to prove herself worthy of her father’s affection and trust.
The older twin by a mere ten minutes, Charlotte comes out screaming. Daphne follows, setting the pattern for most of their lives. Charlotte is bright and bold – the sun, but not warmth: a burning, blazing pursuit of power, anger and armor in a pretty blonde package. Daphne her moon – ethereal and lovely, quiet with dark hair and dark eyes; reflecting back the brightness and burn, a guiding light in the darkness.
They are a package deal, something Lottie makes quite clear to everyone in that poison laced honey way of hers. The Queen Bee reigns with her sister close by – gaining power through a combination of charm, manipulation, and other, crueler accusations that never stick. Charlotte’s not just the popular girl – she’s also obsessive to a fault, a perfectionist who absolutely won’t accept failure. She’s naturally clever, of course, but not everything comes so easily – she just makes it look like that. Sleepless nights full of self-loathing and relentless dedication to whatever subject is giving her trouble result in near perfect marks and a lifelong tendency to dance right on the edge of self-destruction.
Perfection leads to Oxford, of course, and despite her best-efforts, Lottie’s never been all that good at numbers, so she studies the law. She loves a challenge, the intricacies and various loopholes that craft something particularly clever and weighty. Two years at Oxford, then her third year in Leiden, studying international & European law. The family business is international, so it’s the obvious choice. But it's the first time she’s away from Daphne, and it takes a toll. Daphne goes dark, but Lottie burns hotter and faster. She’s crueler – like something has been torn away and left all her edges jagged and sharp.
Daphne publishes a novel – and Lottie’s her biggest fan, bullying everyone she knows into buying a copy or two. She’s always known her sister was capable of greatness, hated anyone who dismissed Daphne’s shyness or kindness as weakness. The success of Daphne’s novel is probably the only time Charlotte’s ever let herself be truly, selflessly happy for someone else’s success. It lasts their final year at Oxford, but that’s not enough for Lottie. So she spends a year at Harvard gaining an LLM degree and a profound hatred for Boston. She returns to London, and naturally starts working for her father’s company. Here lies the biggest disconnect of Miss Charlotte Eversley’s young life – she idolizes her father, has spent her entire life living up to his name; but she’s also fought tooth and nail to prove that she deserves this position on merit, not her father’s name. She should work for an outside firm first, establish herself in the field. But he’s old, and his health is failing despite the façade they present to the public. So Charlotte falls in line, and weaponizes her beauty and cleverness against anyone who’s foolish enough to suggest she’s not earned her position.
EXTRAS:
She currently lives in a townhouse in London with her only child, a 2-year-old chocolate colored standard poodle named Hazelnut.
Chaotic bisexual
She and Daphne attended the last night of the Eras Tour LA in August, 2023 together ( 1989 tv was announced ) but then had a huge argument after the concert due to Lottie being a bitch to Daphne’s date & accusing them of only being with her for the family money. The twins have been on bad terms / estranged ever since
She loves all her siblings and would commit atrocities for them, but they are still subject to her harshest judgement ( except for Daphne up until last year ) and she’s never been one to mince words. Still – it's very much ‘only I can say that about them, I’ll ruin anyone else who dare say so.’
She is left-handed.
Her father is the only one to call her Charlie.

OLIVIA HAWTHORNE
age: 33.
gender & pronouns: cis female & she/her.
neighborhood: downtown.
occupation: real estate agent.
fc: christina ochoa.
BIOGRAPHY
trigger warnings: adoption, alcohol, cancer, and death.
Olivia Hawthorne born Olivia Rodriguez in Barcelona Spain to a very unfortunate family. Her mother was young, sixteen when she had her, and her father was part of a gang over there. Olivia's mother was part of a very religious family and that's why she had to give her up, because the parents thought it'd be better for her. Grace and James Hawthorne were born in the United States. James was a staff sergeant for the United States Marine Corps and Grace Hawthorne was a very successful real estate agent. They had been trying to expand their family for a long time, and were finally told that kids weren't in their future if they didn't adopt or have a surrogacy pregnancy. So that's what the Hawthornes did, they planned to adopt, and when James was stationed in Barcelona he was on an assignment that happened to be near a home that had foster kids and orphans. He took a liking to Olivia, and a couple years later she was being brought to the United States to live with her new family.
Olivia was four when her and her parents moved to Boston. Her father was stationed their to take over training new marines and her mother continued to grow her real estate business and name. When Olivia was seven her father was sent overseas and didn't make it home. Olivia has never felt a pain like that before, losing her father was the hardest thing she'd ever gone through, and to watch her mom spiral out of control was heartbreaking in itself.
A couple months after the funeral Grace and Olivia packed up the SUV and drove across the country to Los Angeles. Olivia loved Los Angeles and although her mother continued to drink and stay out late, she grew her business in the real estate world. At the age of fifteen Grace stopped partying, moved the girls to Beverly Hills and became one of the top two Real Estate Agents on the West Coast. People called her outside of California to help them find their forever home.
Olivia lived a comfortable life, she had all the best gadgets and gizmos a kid could want, she got a brand new car when she got her license, she went to the most elite public school in Los Angeles County. She had a job lined up for her at her moms office when she graduated college, and she got accepted into all of her choices. Stanford being number one.
Olivia focused on school, and less on partying when she started at college. Her dream was to be as successful as her mother, if not more successful so she knew the only way that could happen would be if she kept her head in the game. Olivia majored in Urban Studies, while working on her real estate license on the side when she met Maddie.
Maddie and Olivia they were good friends, who studied with each other and helped each other out but both of them knew that there was more to it. So they began dating, and then they got engaged, and then they got married, and then they moved to Providence Peak together and life was great until it wasn't. They were meant to be together forever, or for as long as Maddie could manage. When she left Providence suddenly Olivia couldn't leave. She had to finish her contract with the office she was in for two more years and sell their home. Which led to bonding between her ex in laws and her.
Olivia finally moved back to LA and began working with her mother. Her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer, which meant more responsibility for Olivia.
Olivia's mom just passed away two weeks ago, so she found someone her mom trusted to run the office while she went back to Providence Peak to ask Maddie's family for help, and also to get away because being in Los Angeles in her moms home is drowning her.

Greyhound Chapter 19 Rascal Flatts
“Claire, I want you to know I never once want a day without thinking and praying for you.” They sit outside one of Boston's famous coffee shops. Claire sits beside her man,, their hands entwined under the table. Julia sits across from him. “and one of the things I wished for you is that you would find someone who is your other half. The speed of this concerns me some and I would like you to date quite a lot before… Not that I've earned the right to give you mothering advise.”
“You’re her mam.” Jamie simply said. “But you needn’t worry. Claire and I,” he looks at her with deep affection. Nothing has ever sounded more right then Claire and I, “ we've discussed it. Conditions. First I needed to meet you, then talk with her dad, as you stated, go out on several dates, before… It may sound old fashioned, but that is how I was raised; I wish to court her. Even though I've already won her heart, I wish to really get to know her and earn you and her dad's trust before..”
“I didn’t think I could love you more.” An awed Claire whispers.
“Claire Elizabeth, you sure got a good one.” A teary eyes Julia replies.
”I did. Well worth waiting for.”
“So you are?”
“Yes mum. We both are.”
“Amazing. Okay, tell me about how you meet and about yourself, Jamie “
As they sip amazing coffee and eat flaky pastry, they do.
“She seemed right shocked at the size of Patty's bairn. An opening…. We were soon talking about our families.”
“So, she told you!”
“Aye ma'… err Julia. She has. Congratulations on making three years. A huge thing.”
“Thank you Jamie. It is still a one day at a time thing.”
“You are still going to meetings." her daughter asks.
“Everyday. Went to an early one before coming here “
“Thank you mum. Jamie, tell her about Lallybroch.”
He smiles and starts, “ She is my family’s estate. A huge working farm and more. A historical site in Scotland as she is well over three hundred years.”
“Wow.”
He goes to tell her about Lallybroch and her inhabitants. “My sister is the stubbornness lass I have ever meet. My mam is everything. Keeps us bairns in line, runs the house, brings a smile to my da's face everyday. My dad, he is the best man I know. Taught me how to treat a lass,” his eyes move to Claire again. A smile as their eyes meet. “and my sister how she is to be treated. My brother-in-law, Ian, meets those qualities. Then there is my baby brother Robbie. He is rightfully spoiled but due to my dad, his head is on straight.”
“Your parents did it right “
“Mum, you have a disease. You and dad did as you had to. I have long forgiven you.” Julia's tears drip into the long forgotten coffee.
“Claire, mo ghoal, I need to get to Angus'. You two need time.”
“Yes.” They both sigh.
“Excuse us a moment, Julia.” She smiles through her tears and waves them off. Jamie leads Claire a bit away. “You know how much I love you?”
“I do.”
“I will see you in a few days.”
“A few days, eh.” He lifts her head and gently kisses her. He then leads her back to where her mum waits.
“It was so very nice to meet you.”
“You also Jamie. True gentleman are rare. I am beyond thankful my daughter meet one.”
“I an thankful for the same.” He takes her hand, kisses the back. “Claire, I will ring you.”
“Yes.” She hugs him close. He returns it as long as he can, as loath to leave her as she is to be left. He sits her back down across from her mum and slowly walks away.

Philosophical (Epilogue)
Bryce x MC
An epilogue to Homecoming
Previous Part: Part 5
Word Count: 2200
Warnings: Recreational drug use, implied NSFW
“You know what’s a weird word?” Casey queries, cuddled into his side as they lay on the plush rug Casey got on sale at Bed Bath and Beyond.
Bryce takes a long drag from the joint before handing it back to Casey. “What?” He prompts, as he exhales the smoke.
Casey inhales more smoke before she replies, blowing smoke rings. “Landlord. Like, it’s just so elitist. You know they came up with the term themselves, thinking they’re so much better than the lowly renters without the capital needed to buy anything in ridiculous housing markets like Boston.” She tssks. “Landlord.” She repeats again.
Bryce smiles up at the ceiling, taking the joint back when she clumsily hands it back over. “Hmmm.” He adds.
Casey is undeterred by his lackluster reaction. “Like, oh Lord of the Land that I pay for every month, please, have mercy on me and fix the leaky pipe I told you about months ago! I beg of you, oh rich and powerful one.”
“You seem to be very anti real estate investment. Should we talk about that? What happened? Was your landlord at that penthouse terrible? I thought he gave you guys a good deal out of the kindness in his heart.” Bryce quips.
“Pshh…of course you landlords stick with your own.” Casey teases.
“I’m not a landlord. That only applies if you don’t live in the same house.” Bryce defends himself, not wanting her to group him in with her very negative perception of landlords.
“Nope, me and Chris pay you rent. You’re a landlord.” Casey insists, taking the joint back from him.
“Roommate.” Bryce counters. “And I’ve told you a million times you don’t have to pay rent. And in any case, you’re paying way below market rate.”
“I’m a strong independent woman who doesn’t need my landlord slash boyfriend to take care of me.” Casey responds cheekily.
“I should have known you’d be a philosophical stoner.” Bryce comments, leaning over to kiss her softly. She tastes like smoke and Fritos.
Bryce and Casey have never smoked together before. But they’re currently snowed in, the electricity is out, and Chris, Bryce’s tenant, gifted them the weed since he is trying to cut back as he finishes his dissertation.
Plus, every month they try to do something new together. When they went to couples’ therapy after the incident in Hawaii, that had been something their counselor suggested. They’ve since stopped going to therapy, Casey having worked through her trust issues, and Bryce having worked through his habit of sabotaging good things in his life, (their relationship is now stronger than ever) but they kept the once a month something new rule going.
“Philosophical stoner? What other types of stoners are there?” Casey asks, taking another long drag of the half smoked joint.
“There’s the goofy stoner, the sad stoner, the sleepy stoner...”. Bryce ticks off on his fingers.
“And what kind of stoner are you?” Casey interrupts.
Bryce grins at her, stealing her bag of Fritos. “The classic, the hungry stoner.”
Casey laughs, grabbing her chips back once he’s had a mouthful. “Man, it’s been years since I smoked weed. I think the last time must have been freshman year of college. I don’t remember ever feeling this good though.”
“It’s the company.” Bryce quips with a wink, running his hand up and down her bare leg. She’s only wearing one of his button ups, whilst he’s clad in just loose grey sweatpants.
“Probably partly it’s your company, but I also think this is just really good weed. Now that it’s been legalized, I feel like quality has gone way up.” Casey responds, taking one last drag before handing the joint back to Bryce.
“I don’t know. I smoked weed last year at Phoebe’s going away party with Elijah, and that weed wasn’t this good. We’ve got to find out exactly where Chris got this.” Bryce insists.
Casey wraps her leg loosely over his waist as he takes another drag, her arm curling over his bare chest. “You know, I think you’re wrong about me. I’m not a philosophical stoner.”
“Then what kind of stoner are you Casey?”
Casey moves to straddle his waist, slowly unbuttoning his borrowed shirt to expose her smooth skin as he watches hungrily. “The horny stoner.” She answers, taking the last remnants of the joint from his hand and putting it out in a glass bowl on the floor before capturing his lips.
…
An hour later, the two off duty doctors lay comfortably in each other’s arms. The natural light coming through the open blinds illuminates their bronzed skin as the now sated lovers share a new joint. They have yet to find the energy to get up off the floor.
The comfortable silence is broken by Bryce’s cell phone ringing. He reaches up to the nightstand for it, before lying back down on the carpet beside Casey. “It’s Abs.” He tells Casey. “You might want to button that shirt back up, it’s a FaceTime call.”
Bryce puts out the joint before tugging his sweatpants back on while Casey works on the buttons. Once they look somewhat presentable, Bryce answers.
“Hey Abs.” Bryce greets. His eyes widen as he takes in his sisters’ hospital surroundings. “Did you have the baby?! She’s early!”
Abigail smiles, somehow still emanating that Lahela beauty even right after childbirth. “Meet Ailani Marie Hill.” She says softly as she pans the phone to the small bundle in her arms wrapped in a pink blanket. The baby opens her light brown eyes, seemingly staring into the camera even though with their medical knowledge they both know all she sees at this stage is blurs.
“Oh my God Abigail, she is so beautiful.” Casey praises.
“Thank you! I think she looks like Ryan, but he insists she looks like me.” Abigail responds, turning the phone toward her husband who’s sitting at her bedside returning work emails on his phone.
He pauses on that for a moment, waving to Casey and Bryce. “Congratulations Ryan, how does fatherhood feel?” Bryce asks, being much friendlier than he usually is with his brother-in-law. Abigail got pregnant almost immediately after the wedding, so now that Bryce assumes Ryan is going to be around, he’s resigned himself to building some sort of brotherly relationship. Well, a better brotherly relationship than the one than he has with his own brother Francis.
Ryan smiles. “It feels amazing. I already feel like Haku is mine, but now being able to be here for everything from birth, it’s something else.” Ryan answers.
Abigail turns the phone back to her own face. “When are you coming back to Hawaii to meet your niece?” She questions.
“Why don’t you come to Boston? I’ll show you around the hospital, we can walk the Freedom Trail, and I know all the best Boston restaurants.” Bryce counters.
“You can’t avoid home forever Bryce.” Abigail insists. There is some commotion at the door. “Hey, Gabby and Francis just got here. I’ll call you back.”
“My phone is going to die, and the power is out, so I’ll call you back when I’ve charged it. But congratulations again Abs! She’s really something, and I’m glad you’re happy.” Bryce responds.
Abigail smiles. “I’m glad you guys are happy too. You know what would make you guys happier though? Babies. When are you going to give Dad those mutt grandchildren?” Abigail mocks their father’s callous words from the brunch from hell.
“Abigail.” Bryce warns.
“Wait, I just noticed how red your eyes are. Are you guys high? What, are you 16? You better get all that weed smoking out of your system because let me tell you, once you have babies you don’t get to hang out on the floor, banging and smoking weed all day.” Abigail warns.
“Alright, I’m hanging up now. Conserving phone battery for emergencies. Bye Abs.” Bryce hangs up, shaking his head at his sister ending the call like that. He turns to look at Casey, who’s uncharacteristically quiet. “What?” He asks.
Casey straddles his waist once again. “When are we going to have babies?” She asks.
“You want me to pump a baby into you?” He says jokingly, thrusting up from beneath her.
Casey lets out an irritated sigh. “You’re not taking me seriously.” She moves as if to get off of him, but he stops her by gripping her bare thighs.
“Baby, it’s not that I don’t take you seriously. It’s just that you’re high and being very philosophical right now.”
Casey’s eyes narrow. “I thought we established in therapy that being under the influence doesn’t nullify actions.” She can’t help but jab at him about the incident with Tia in Hawaii.
Bryce frowns, hurt by her words. Casey sighs, placing her hands on top of his. “I’m sorry Amor. I know Dr. Wilson said that if I’m going to forgive you, I really need to forgive you. And I do forgive you Bryce. And I love you.”
“I love you too Casey, always.”
“So, if we’re in love, and almost 30, and settled, doesn’t that seem like a good time for a baby?” Casey questions.
“I have two more years of my residency.” Bryce points out.
“Two years isn’t that long. And I’ll be an attending in a few months, making real money finally. And Chris is probably going to leave Boston once he graduates from MIT, leaving us with a spare bedroom. Plus, if I’m going to hyphenate our last names or take yours, it saves me a lot of hassle to do it before I publish research.” Casey replies.
Bryce’s right hand leaves her thigh to cup her face. “It seems you’ve put some serious thought into this.”
“I am serious about this. And about you Bryce.”
He gently runs his thumb under her eye. “Ask me about a baby tomorrow Casey, when your eyes aren’t bloodshot from marijuana.”
She gets off of him, storming off towards the kitchen. “Casey.” He calls after her exasperatedly, rushing after her.
“Why do I always have to be the one to initiate everything?” She questions when he catches up to her. She’s pulling out ingredients to bake a cake. She only ever stress bakes, which doesn’t bode well for him in this argument.
“What?” He questions, reaching the flour on the top shelf when he sees her struggling to reach it. She doesn’t say thank you when he hands it to her.
“I had to kiss you first, and I had to be the one to say that our hooks up meant something to me first, and now I have to be the one to bring up babies, and a future. How do you think that makes me feel? The fact that you don’t seem to take any initiative when it comes to our relationship?”
“I told you I loved you first. And I asked you to move in.” He reminds her.
“Fine, yes, you did do a few things. But why haven’t you proposed? It’s been three years Bryce.” Casey gripes.
He grips her arm when she moves towards the fridge for eggs. “Do you want me to propose?” He asks, eyes searching hers intensely.
“What do you think?” She responds, her tone irritated.
“I didn’t know if you wanted me to, that’s why I haven’t. After Hawaii, it took a long time to get back to where we were. I didn’t want to mess anything up by pushing you for anything you weren’t ready for.” Bryce answers.
“Something I’m not ready for, or something you’re not ready for?” Casey pushes.
“I’m ready. I’ve been ready. I just…you know I self-sabotage. I didn’t want to mess anything up with you Casey. I can’t lose you, you’re my everything… You really want to get married? To have babies with me? You’re not messing with me?” He says this last bit with such hope and insecurity that all the anger immediately rushes out of Casey. Sometimes, she forgets how messed up his family is. How he never had a healthy image of marriage to emulate. How he was raised to think you marry for business connections and then rear heirs to a business empire.
She loops her arms around his neck and draws him down for a passionate kiss. He grips her waist and lifts her onto the countertop, stepping between her legs as he deepens the kiss. It’s several minutes before she pulls away.
“I’m not messing with you Bryce. I want to be with you, forever. I want my kids to be half you.” She seals her promise with another passionate kiss.
Bryce pulls away after several long moments, smiling at her as if he’s just won the lottery. “Let’s go pick out a ring when they reopen the T.” Bryce suggests, and Casey nods happily.
“And can we do a small wedding? Preferably in California?” Casey asks.
“God, Casey Valentine, nothing would make me happier. Do we have to invite my parents and Francis?”
Casey chuckles, giving him another kiss. “We do. But your mom is not allowed to plan anything.”
Bryce grins. “In that case, she might refuse to come. It’s perfect.”
Casey smiles. “I can’t wait to be your wife.” She pushes against his chest so he’ll let her down from the counter. “Now let me continue with my cake. I think I’m actually a hungry stoner like my fiancé.”

Something Old and Something New - Chapter 7: The 4077 Rides Again
It'd tookened his Ma a fair bit of convincing to get Radar to leave the farm and go to Dr. Winchester's wedding.
He'd'a still sent in the quilt square, of course. Cuz it means a lot to Max and to Hawkeye and to the rest of the MASH folks. And he don't like letting his friends down. But he really weren't sure about actually going to the wedding.
Partways cuz he ain't left home for further away than Patricia's hometown of Lancaster since he got back from Korea. And he knows – best he can, anyway, it ain't like he's got a feeling about it or nothin – that everything's gonna be ok while he's gone. Park Sung's more'n able to look after things for a weekend and the wedding's set between planting and harvest so there ain't much to be done around the place but rooting out weeds and looking after the animals. But still, Radar don't like leaving 'em in a lurch.
But the other part – which he don't really like thinking on, even though he'd been sure to tell Patricia and his Ma, just in case things went bad and they came home early – is that Dr. Winchester don't really like him all that much. Thinks Radar's too far beneath him to be worth considering. And Radar's used to being overlooked – he ain't the smartest or the handsomest or the best at anything, really. And plenty of the commissioned officers had been like that – rude and mean and thoughtless. But that don't mean it don't still hurt. And it don't mean he wants to spend a whole weekend getting looked down on like that by Dr. Winchester again.
Truth to tell, Radar'd been shocked to get an invitation at all – and written on the fanciest paper he's ever seen, with little flowers worked in it – nice enough to put in a picture frame and hang on the wall, and being used for writing on! But there'd been his name, wrote out in real pretty handwriting and under it a little note in the same writing saying how much Mrs. Dr. Winchester wanted to meet him.
But nothing from Dr. Winchester.
So it just feels like maybe he don't know Radar's coming, is all. And that maybe he and Patricia'll get there and Dr. Winchester'll be real mad and condescending and mean like he gets and they'll get throwed outta there.
Which would be too bad, cuz Radar's really looking forward to seeing all the folks from the 4077 who'll be there too – an it won't be everybody of course, cuz Dr. Winchester weren't there for the first half of the war, an he don't care for some of the folks from the 4077 even more than he don't care for Radar. But Hawkeye'll be there and Trapper and BJ and maybe even Max, who Radar's really missed – the one person who'd never ragged on him for being short or a kid or homesick or nothing. Though Dr. Winchester don't like Max any more than he'd liked Radar, so it ain't likely.
But his Ma'd just said “nothing ventured means nothing gained” in response to Radar's worries. And that's true enough. He wouldn't be where he is with Patricia if'n he hadn't'a talked to her that day in Kimpo and then wrote to her once he got back home. And he wouldn't have Park Soon's help here at the farm if'n he hadn't'a wrote to Hawkeye about the farm – and then told the truth of the matter when they'd found him out in his lies. And he could'a saved a whole mess of time if'n he'd'a just wrote the truth in the first place – been honest with his friends from the start, even though it'd been embarrassing to admit he were struggling.
His Ma'd been right, of course, so he and Patrica'd headed up to Ottumwa and got the bus out East. And that'd been all right, as things go. It's a good thing he and Patricia like seeing a lot of each other, though, boy, cuz it'd tookened near to a whole day to get where they were going – and the bus'd broke down once and it was almost like being back on an army transport – minus being shelled.
But now they're in Boston in the lobby of a real fancy hotel – the kind of place Radar ain't sure they ain't gonna get kicked outta, invitation or no. He feels like a real rube, standing there rubbernecking at all the gold and fancy chandeliers and all the folks dressed up real nice just to set in the lobby. But then he sees Max and Soon Li up by the check-in desk and when he comes up to 'em, Max smiles real big and hugs Radar and starts shooting the breeze like it ain't been no time at all since they'd seen each other. And Radar figures things oughtta work out all right after all. And he is really looking forward to seeing the rest of his friends from Korea.
--
Trapper and Hawkeye and all their house-guests cram into a cab over to Back Bay and the poncy hotel Charles's wedding reception is at. And they're a little early – mostly so the ladies have time to change into the fancy duds called for in the dress code – and ain't that a kicker, having a little printed card of what you can and can't wear included in the invitation instead of just saying to dress nice or whatever. But maybe that's normal for posh weddings, Trapper wouldn't know. All he knows is that he's glad the guys' instructions just say black tie.
At any rate, it's good they get there early cuz there's a little bit of a SNAFU when they try to check in cuz the concierge don't wanna accept their invitations as legitimate at first. But Margaret strong arms him into letting them in with the power of righteous indignation and the threat of a shiner. So they collect their keys and split off to their rooms – well, Sidney and Steve and Millie do, he and Hawkeye and the gals don't gotta split very far. Since ostensibly Hawkeye's taking Margaret to this shindig and Trapper's bringing Kat they've got a suite made up of a couple bedrooms, a bathroom, and even a little living room to divide up how they want.
“Charles must not have wanted to make any assumptions about the sleeping arrangements,” Hawkeye says lightly. “Either that or Marjory set all this up.”
“It could have been Charles, I suppose.” Margaret sounds pretty doubtful, though. “I mean, he can be surprisingly tactful sometimes. Though I doubt he knows the truth of the situation – he's probably just concerned about how it would look having unmarried couples sneaking into each others' rooms.”
The concierge had very pointedly informed Steve and Millie that they were in a room with two twin beds – not that that's much of a deterrent, in Trapper's experience. After you've fucked in an army cot, a twin bed is positively roomy. And Charles or Marjory or whoever set this up probably knows that. But it's all gotta look right on paper - hence their little setup.
“Yeah,” adds Kat. “We wouldn't want to give any of those little old rich ladies the impression that people have sex for fun.”
“Heaven forbid,” Trapper says in his best impression of his pearl clutching former mother-in-law.
“Fortunately for Charles's reputation as a pillar of Boston high society, my days of sneaking into the nurses' tent are long over.” Hawkeye gives Trapper an unbearably smarmy look and Trapper chucks one of the stupid little throw pillows at him.
Margaret and Kat roll their eyes at them and leave the line of fire to finish getting ready. Hawkeye and Trapper grin at each other – they've just been given implicit permission to fuck around like dumb kids for a while and they're gonna take full advantage of it. It might be the last chance at fun for the whole night, given what a wedding reception run by the illustrious Winchester family is bound to be like.
But before they can start an all out pillow fight, there's a knock at the door.
“Max! Soon Li!” Hawkeye exclaims, tearing the door open. “What brings you to our humble abode?”
“I come bearing gifts – or one gift specifically. I figured everyone'd wanna put their cards in with the quilt before we put it on the gift table. And I heard a rumor you got all this extra real estate, so I figured you wouldn't mind hosting.” Max looks around as she sets the quilt – wrapped in hideously gaudy wrapping paper – on the side table. “Radar wasn't kidding about your hotel room being palatial. I'm pretty sure it's bigger than my whole fucking apartment.”
“Just one of the many perks of having rich friends and a socially unacceptable relationship,” Hawkeye says glibly. “But we're happy to babysit the quilt – it'll give us a chance to catch up with everyone as they wander through. I'm assuming you and Radar told everyone else where to find us.”
“Speaking of catching up,” Trapper interjects as he goes from formally introducing himself to Soon Li to greeting Max - more interested in giving her a great big hug than the inner workings of all things Radar. “It's real nice seeing you again, Max,” he says into the top of her head – and then he pulls back and gives her a once over, “Kinda weird seeing you in men's civvies, though.”
Soon Li nods. “Men's clothes are so ugly. Like a flour sack.”
“To be fair, this looks like some quality tailoring. Just not the Max Klinger I remember.”
Trapper walks around her, taking in all the angles, seeming bemused. And that's right. Trapper wasn't there for the end of the war when Max had started wearing army issue fatigues and men's clothing. Partly it was trying to live up to the new rank and new responsibilities – people just tended to trust her more in “normal” clothing – and she was willing to sacrifice to make sure the 4077 ran smoothly. And partly it was the blue discharges being handed out like candy as part of Eisenhower's campaign bid. Why exactly the folks at home cared about that over things like being able to pay the bills and put food on the table, she still doesn't know.
But Max wanted out on a psycho – the respectable way – and not a blue discharge. So the uniform and the wacky costumes had replaced the Klinger collection. At least on the surface.
Max laughs. “Don't worry, I'm wearing a delightful little seafoam camisole and panty set underneath. Still the Max Klinger you know and love.”
“Oh yeah?” And now Trapper's looming behind Max, hands on her hips, tall and broad and full of the flirtatious intensity she remembers from Korea.
The kind of flirtation that says “I'm only joking - unless you're interested, and then I'm completely serious.” The kind of flirtation you had to use for situations like these. But it's also the kind of flirtation that won't be upset at Max's refusal.
So she just turns and pushes Trapper away playfully. “Stop it you lech. I'm a married woman now.”
“And Soon Li's one hell of a lucky gal,” is Trapper's easy response. And he winks at her across the room. So his complete inability to get jealous hasn't changed from Korea – good to know.
“Flattery won't get you a private fashion show,” Max teases. “But it may get you a discount on any future lingerie purchases.” She turns to Hawkeye, who'd been watching all this unfold with a sort of amused fondness. “Maybe something in powder blue lace?” It would look lovely against his skin tone and really bring out his eyes.
“Fuck.” Trapper sounds like he's been punched in the gut and had all the air knocked out of him. “You don't play fair at all, Max.”
She pats Trapper's cheek in gentle mockery. “I never have – and I don't see any reason to start now. Besides, someone has to keep my new tailoring business afloat.”
“Yes, Max, you must keep me in the station to which I've become accustomed,” Soon Li says with a laugh.
Trapper slaps Max on the back. “Good thing you make the big bucks, then, huh?”
“It's got to be lucrative, being Toledo's only Mob affiliated tailor,” Hawkeye jokes. Which may or may not actually be true, Max doesn't know.
She winks at him. “Watch out. You're consorting with a known criminal.”
“Better to be in bed with the mob than the cops,” Trapper says with a shrug. “At least their quota's just in dollars not arrested degenerates.”
“It's true,” Max says with a slightly bitter laugh.
Cuz it is. Uncle Habib's Mob affiliation is the reason Max is in business at all – bribes and the threat of Mob retaliation keeps the cops from looking too close. And as long as Max provides a veneer of honest commerce to the operation, the Mob doesn't look at her clients – or herself - too close either.
“Allah be praised for good old fashioned back-alley enterprise.”
“And naked greed,” Trapper adds.
“I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at nudity being your conversation topic of choice,” Sidney says as he and Father Mulcahy join the rapidly growing little party in their hotel room.
“Padre!” Hawkeye rushes up to him and kisses him exuberantly on the cheek. “It's been forever since we've seen you – what gives? You get sick of poker?”
“I hope not,” Trapper interjects. “I'm pretty sure a game'll break out at some point tonight.”
“And since you're here, we'll be able to write off our losses as a charitable donation to the orphan's fund,” Hawkeye adds with a laugh.
After a beat, the Padre laughs as well. “Don't you worry, I brought along a deck of cards and a collection plate. Though I've been doing more work with Deaf youths than orphans, now.”
Hawkeye and Trapper both seem to notice the pause – and they have some sort of silent conversation about it if the subtle facial expressions and hand gestures are any indication.
Francis touches the stem of his hearing aides. And his friends must have noticed these as well – they are certainly obtrusive. He knows Sidney has. Though he hasn't said anything, just making sure to enunciate clearly and speak facing Francis.
Or perhaps the hearing aids just feel large and clunky and obvious. He's still getting used to wearing them, after all. And they don't quite feel natural yet the way his glasses do.
He'd had surgery after coming back from Korea – promised as a miracle cure for his type of hearing damage. Apparently shelling had done a number on many young men and doctors were scrambling to find a way to reverse the damage. And Francis has seen his fair share of miracles in Korea, particularly of the medical variety, so he'd agreed to undergo the procedure at the prompting of the Philadelphia diocese, who were eager to have him go back to his old role of hearing confessions and leading youth group at the local Catholic Youth Center – both of which required he be able to, well, hear.
But the Lord often works in mysterious ways, as he'd kept telling himself during the worst of the Korean war. So when the surgery didn't work, it was obvious to Francis that he is meant to be deaf. And when they'd offered to try again with a second operation, he'd told them not to bother and spent the time recovering from surgery by learning sign language. Which is good because the healing scars behind his ears had prevented him from wearing hearing aids for several weeks and even now the aids are uncomfortable enough that he doesn't wear them all the time. Plus, they don't really restore all of his hearing – he still mostly depends on being able to read lips. And his friends obviously noticed that fact.
But all Hawkeye says is, “Certainly a noble cause – and one I'm more than happy to donate my disposable income towards.”
And he says all this while signing along.
“Where did you learn that?” Francis blurts out. No one other than BJ knew he was deaf – and he'd promised not to tell anyone.
And Trapper and Max and Sidney look just as surprised as he is. So it can't have been BJ spilling the proverbial beans.
Hawkeye shrugs. “My grandpa taught me. All the old fishermen used to use sign language on the lobster boats – easier than trying to yell at one another over a storm. And apparently it got to be common enough that everyone around town used it. Up until Alexander Graham Bell showed up and convinced everyone it would encourage Deaf people to have families together and lead to a decay in the moral fabric of America, anyway.”
“Good thing you've never cared about decaying moral fabric,” Trapper says with a sly smile.
And Max chimes in with, “Sounds to me like he probably just wanted to sell more telephones. What a scam artist.”
And then they're all laughing and joking around like they used to, with Francis right there in the middle of it. It feels like no time at all has passed – like Francis is still in Korea and it's terrible and wonderful and it feels like home the way the Philadelphia neighborhood where he grew up and came back to administer over used to feel like. And he sinks back into the feeling of friendship and belonging the same way he sinks into the plush sofa he'd been pushed into by Hawkeye. Who always did like taking care of his friends.
Friends who keep filtering in and out of the hotel room – stopping in to drop off their cards to go along with the quilt, or just to say hi, or to sit and chat a while. The room gets a little crowded and Francis feels slightly, well, pressed. And Hawkeye looks like he's getting a little claustrophobic. So when Margaret and Trapper's date emerge from one of the bedrooms, he makes is way over to where Hawkeye's standing with Colonel and Mrs. Potter and says, “I'm going down to the reception now,” just to gauge where Hawkeye's standing.
“You want me to come with you?” And Hawkeye seems very eager to be out of the overcrowded room. And he's always looking for a way to help others. Even when he won't admit to needing help himself.
So Francis nods. “If you don't mind acting as translator for a while tonight. My sister the Sister couldn't make it – and I'm afraid crowds make things more difficult.”
“Sure thing Padre.” Hawkeye throws an arm over Francis's shoulders, indicates to Trapper that he's leaving, and starts directing them out the door. “Though you should know I mostly used sign language to pass notes in class – so sorry if most of my vocabulary involves insulting algebra.”
Francis laughs – partly from Hawkeye's disclaimer and partly because he can vaguely hear Trapper telling everyone in the hotel room to get the hell out, he's not the one running the reception. So they – plus Margaret, once she's done saying her goodbyes to Trapper's date and some of the other nurses - lead something of a stampede down to the ballroom. But it's more spread out than things in the hotel room had been, so that's a blessing.
With the hotel room cleared out, Trapper does an inventory of all the cards they've accumulated in a towering stack next to the quilt.
“Looks like we're just missing BJ,” Max says from where she's looking over his elbow. “He always did have a kinda California attitude about showing up on time.” Unlike her, who, as a good daughter of the Midwest, always showed up at least fifteen minutes early to appointments.
Trapper checks his watch. “We've still got a bit before the shindig's supposed to officially start. And rich people like to be fashionably late anyway.” He turns to Kat. “But if you want to head down now, I figure Max can take it from here.”
Max throws herself at him like some heroine from a bad romance novel. “Trapper! How could you! I am but a poor and delicate maiden. This heavy gift is too much for my frail arms to bear. Please! Won't some strapping young man help me with this task?” She feels up his arms. “Preferably one with real big biceps.”
Trapper blushes – and part of it may be that everyone's laughing at Max's ridiculous statement – but part of it could be that Max is still sort of thrown over as much of him as she can reach. It would probably work better if she was in heels, to be honest. But it's not her fault he's so tall and she's in flats.
“C'mon, Max, quit trying to snow me. It ain't gonna work.” He's doing his best to keep an aloof expression, but Max can see where the cracks are starting to form. And she's always been good at applying pressure in just the right way to get what she wants. And Trapper's a pretty easy mark, anyway, since he genuinely likes her and all.
“But Trapper, Hawkeye got you to fight that one guy just by saying you had a cute body. Is that it? Do I gotta start complimenting you?” She bats her eyelashes coquettishly. “You're so strong, and handsome, and-”
“Ok, ok, cut it out. I'll deliver the damn gift. Just stop doing that.”
Terminal embarrassment works pretty good too, it turns out.
Max flounces over to Soon Li, secure in the knowledge that the quilt isn't her responsibility anymore. “C'mon, sweetheart, let's get outta here.” And then over her shoulder, “Thanks again for being such a good friend, Trapper!”
He flips her off, but she and Soon Li are free and clear, and Trapper will get over it. Eventually. She might owe him for a while – but it's worth it.
With just Kat and Sidney left, and it getting later and later, Trapper turns to them and says, “You guys may as well get out of here, too. There's no point in us all being late.”
Kat shrugs. “Sure, I'll let Sidney take over as my date. It's no skin off my teeth. But you forgot to pin me, Trap.” She points meaningfully to her lapel.
Trapper wiggles his eyebrows lecherously and goes to get the corsage.
“Violets?” Kat arches an eyebrow at Trapper as he pins it to her dress. “Real cute, McIntyre.”
“Hey, you just told me your dress was purple, is all.”
“Lavender, actually.” She grins.
“All right, now who's being cute?” Trapper asks teasingly.
Kat just sticks her tongue out at him and things devolve into something of a scuffle. Sidney sits on the back of the couch, egging Kat on when she gets Trapper in a headlock – and that's when BJ decides to finally show up. She and Trapper step away from one another, coughing awkwardly, and try to straighten out their fancy clothes.
“I think that's our cue to leave,” Sidney says into the unbroken silence.
BJ just stands there looking taken aback. And the woman who must be Peg looks like she's trying not to laugh. But it's probably better to hotfoot it out of there – so Kat readily takes Sidney's arm and they kind of edge past BJ and Peg and out the door.
“You here to put your card with the quilt?” Trapper asks when it becomes apparent that BJ isn't going to say anything or move from where he's still standing in the doorway.
And that seems to spark him into action – which is good, cuz by now they're officially late to the reception. And since they hadn't been invited to the actual wedding wedding, just the reception, Trapper wants to make the most of it.
Not that he's gonna complain about not having to sit through some endless protestant Mass just to watch his friends make out.
Fine, he's a little sad he didn't get to go. But the reception – if BJ ever hurries it up so he can get to it –oughtta be good, seeing as they're pretty much treating it as a 4077 reunion being held on the Winchester's dime. And there's a lot worse ways to spend a weekend. Like standing here in a hotel room while BJ fumbles through his pockets for a card that his wife has meanwhile pulled out of her purse.
And it don't look like things are gonna get any less awkward anytime soon. So Trapper grabs the present from the side table, with all the cards kinda piled on top. And Peg puts their card on the pile and then gently chivies her husband out the door so Trapper can lock up. And it's probably pretty rude to just leave them there in the hallway without waiting so they can all walk down to the reception together – but Trapper just wants this errand over with so he can go sit with his friends some more. And Peg and BJ seem to be having a moment together anyway, so he sets out alone.
He's gonna kill Max for leaving him to wrangle the gift without her.

Fic: Pure (9/14)
Summary: Belle wanted to wait until marriage before she had sex for the first time. It was the one thing that still stuck in her mind after leaving her small town upbringing steeped in religious doctrine and abstinence culture. When her wedding night comes, however, the purity ideals of Storybrooke’s sex education are hard to shake off, and making the transition from virgin to sexually active is more difficult than she anticipated. With the help of a patient husband, Belle begins an intimate journey into understanding her body, her desires, and her identity as a woman.

Over the course of their relationship, Gold had found out a lot about Belle’s hometown and the culture that she had been brought up in. Most of the time, they’d managed to laugh about some of Storybrooke’s more ridiculous ideas. Sex was one thing he’d never managed to get her to laugh about before they were married, and something he’d only just managed to get her relaxed enough to slightly giggle about since.
Now, he was beginning to think that she might never be light-hearted about it again.
He’d always tried to respect the town as much as he could. It was all very well Belle making disparaging comments about it; it was her home. She could slag it off as much as she liked. It was like him and Scotland. He complained about the weather and the food and was very glad he’d left the country when he had, but woe betide anyone else who decided to insult his place of birth. He knew that Belle would likely feel a similar protectiveness towards Storybrooke. He had never really been enamoured of the place, but he knew that it meant a lot to Belle.
Driving home to Boston after their disastrous trip to see Moe, it had been extremely hard to bite back all of the things he wanted to say about the place. Any love for it that he might have come to hold for it had been completely shattered with the way Belle had been treated there. He knew that she had intended to stay longer, to make sure that her father would be ok when he got out of the hospital after his surgery, but she was so close to putting him back in the intensive care ward that ultimately, they’d made the executive decision to put Aiden’s money to good use and hire a nurse to take care of him throughout his recuperation, allowing Belle to go back to Boston and breathe freely at last.
Ever since that first night, curled up together in a motheaten single bed in the inn, Belle had been distant and withdrawn. At first he had put it down to being worried about her father, but Gold soon realised that it ran far deeper than that, and God, he hated her hometown for what it had done to her, for the way it had broken her spirit so completely within just a few days of being there and facing the scrutiny. He’d tried to get her to forget the awful words that had been spoken, to tell her that they didn’t matter and that the opinions of the petty-minded locals were of no importance, but deep down, he knew that it would have little effect on her, because to Belle, they were of importance. They did matter. These were the people that she had spent her formative years with, people in positions of power and influence that she respected, her own father for heaven’s sake.
Naturally, she was going to take what they said to heart.
Gold hated them, but not nearly as much as he hated himself in that moment. His mind was in a constant state of struggle between feeling that he should have done more to protect her whilst they’d been back in Storybrooke and knowing that Belle did not want to be protected; the idea of husband as knight in shining armour and wife as poor lost soul in need of guidance and protection was one that she had been trying to shake off for as long as he had known her.
And of course, there was the little monster at the back of his mind that was feeling a little peeved that he and Belle had not made love since they went to Storybrooke. Their intimacy stretched to chaste kisses and him spooning up behind her in bed. They’d been closer and more demonstrative than that even before they had been married.
It was not so much the lack of sex that bothered him. As he’d reassured Belle on their wedding night, he’d been so long without it that he wasn’t missing it. He was used to long dry spells. It was more the fact that they had made such progress and now, with one visit to Storybrooke and a bunch of ignorant nuns, it had all been completely undone, and Belle was denying herself all of the things that she had learned. It felt like she was punishing herself for something entirely out of her control, and in doing so, she was punishing him as well.
Then this in its turn, the annoyance at their suddenly deceased sex life, made him feel angry at himself for even thinking that way in the first place. Belle was going through hell, that much was clear, and here he was, thinking with his cock instead of his brain. Belle needed his help, but he didn’t know how to help her without it seeming like he just wanted sex. How could he ask her about what was going on in his head without coming across as a thirsty bastard with his own interests at heart? Belle was hurting and it killed him to see her that way, but at the same time, he knew he couldn’t raise the subject with her. All he could do was watch her flounder.
He slammed his fist against the workbench, the smarting pain a momentary distraction from his tumultuous thoughts, and Jefferson jumped three feet into the air with the sound. Gold felt a little guilty; he’d been so caught up in his own thoughts that he’d forgotten that Jefferson was in the shop with him, cleaning up the vintage frocks and headwear that they’d received in an estate sale the previous week.
“Did the bench do something to offend you?”
“No, no. The bench is an innocent victim in this drama.”
Jefferson laid down his sponge and took off his gloves, coming over to the workbench and patting Gold’s shoulder.
“No offence, Aiden, but you’ve been out of sorts ever since you came back from Storybrooke. I thought that Belle’s dad was going to be ok?”
“He is, more’s the pity.” The snarl was out of his mouth before he had chance to stop it, but at least Belle wasn’t around to hear it. He shot Jefferson a worried glance, but his friend didn’t seem to be too worried by the outburst. He seemed amused more than anything.
“There’s definitely something going on that you’re not telling me.”
There was a lot going on that he wasn’t telling Jefferson; he wasn’t accustomed to talking about his sex life with anyone, even if he knew all the lurid details of Jefferson’s whether he wanted to or not.
“This goes deeper than a normal hatred for one’s father-in-law.”
Gold sighed. “It’s private, Jefferson. And that’s not negotiable.”
“All right. I’ll leave well alone. You know I’m always here if you need a friendly ear or two. Is Belle ok?”
“Yes.” The answer came out too quickly out of a desire not to discuss it, and Jefferson’s eyebrows ended up in his hairline.
“I don’t believe you.”
“Belle’s fine, I’m fine, Belle’s dad’s going to be fine, now can we please drop the subject!”
“Ok, well, like I said, I’m here if you need me.” He made to put his gloves back on, then stopped. “Aiden, we’ve been friends for a long time; you know that you can trust me not to take anything you tell me any further, and you know that you can tell me anything. I know you’re not one to wear your heart on your sleeve and you much prefer to bottle up all your feelings until you explode under the weight of them, but I’ve told you time and again that’s not healthy. Whatever you’re going through, you don’t have to bear it alone.”
He did, though, that was the trouble. Gold sighed. How could he even begin to explain his woes to Jefferson? He’d never really held with the idea of a problem shared being a problem halved. It wasn’t fair to burden all his problems onto Jefferson; and it wasn’t as if Jefferson could offer a solution so it would be a pointless endeavour. Unless, of course, Jefferson could help…
He shook his head. No, that was utterly absurd. This was between him and Belle, and he would have to find a way to get through it on his own. It wasn’t fair on Belle to drag someone else into their intimate life. It would be as if he was complaining about her, which he categorically did not want to do.
He loved Belle, and he didn’t think that anything could happen between them that would make him stop loving her. Even if they never had sex again for the rest of their lives, he would be grateful for the amazing few weeks of intimacy that they’d had, and he would never stop loving her because of this enforced celibacy.
Even as he told himself this over and over again, he couldn’t help some doubt beginning to creep in. He would never hold her upbringing against her; he knew that she couldn’t help the mental trap that she was now in. But did Belle know that herself? Did she realise that, or was she thinking that he was angry with her for withholding sex? How could he let her know that it wasn’t a problem without addressing the elephant in the room?
What if she was regretting marrying him in the first place? If she’d stayed local and married someone from her own town, who’d had the same upbringing as she had, someone her own age; then she wouldn’t be having this problem. Gold tried to tell himself that she would have been miserable, because she never would have experienced (well, very likely wouldn’t have experienced) all the things that he had taught her and helped her to discover about herself, but then again, she couldn’t miss what she’d never known. Maybe it would have been better for her to live in ignorance.
He shook his head. He couldn’t wish that upon her; he had spent enough time in Storybrooke to know that the life there wasn’t one that he would wish upon his worst enemy, let alone the woman he loved.
Gold sighed again, and Jefferson just raised an eyebrow, clearly hoping for an explanation as to why his friend was so out of sorts, but Gold wasn’t going to go down that route. He stood up quickly, leaving his tools out on the bench and carefully stepping over Jefferson’s work on the floor.
“I need some air.”
“Right. Yes, that’s exactly what you need,” Jefferson muttered, sarcasm dripping from every word. “I think what you actually need is to stop pretending that you don’t have feelings but hey, I’m only your best friend and business partner, so what do I know?”
Gold just ignored him and stalked out of the shop, walking quickly down the street in no particular direction, just trying to get rid of all his nervous energy.
There was nothing that he could do to help Belle, or to help himself. All he could do was stay quiet and hope that she would find some kind of peace in her own time. If he gave her the space she needed to feel safe and come to terms with everything, then hopefully she would not misread his intentions.
Perhaps it would be best if he started sleeping in the spare room.
X
Belle was in a quandary. She was in more than a quandary. She was in a state of downright mental turmoil and it was now so bad that she had got to the stage where she couldn’t sleep.
She shifted onto her back, staring at the ceiling in the dark and wishing that she knew what to do. God, she wished that she had never gone back to Storybrooke. She knew that she couldn’t really blame her father for having a heart attack, but if he’d never had it, then she never would have had to go back to her hometown, and she and Aiden would still be living the blissfully happy marriage that they’d had before that fated trip. She would still be living in wonderful ignorance of the way the world saw her, and they’d be making love on every surface of the house.
Well, perhaps not every surface. Even before Storybrooke, Belle had still been somewhat sceptical about doing it in places other than the bed.
She sat up, drawing her knees up to her chest and resting her chin on them. Life would be so much easier if she was ready to have a baby. Then no one would judge her for having sex. She’d get pregnant, and she’d be a mother, and no one could accuse her of being a whore then. The only trouble was that she wasn’t ready. The thought of being a mother scared her, and she couldn’t in all honesty bring a child into the world if she wasn’t going to be in a fit state to take care of it. That wasn’t fair on her or the child.
So, naturally, her only choice had been just to stop having sex, the two voices in her head at constant war with each other. One of them was screaming that it really didn’t matter what the nuns thought of her, that she didn’t even live in Storybrooke anymore so why should she care what the town’s opinion of her was? Why shouldn’t she enjoy sex like she’d been doing for the past few weeks? The other was yelling equally loudly that she should never have been enjoying it in the first place and what she was doing was a sin, that the union of man and wife was for the purposes of procreation, that’s why sex was so sacred and had to wait till marriage, after all. If you’re not doing it to make a baby then you shouldn’t be doing it at all!
And then there was a third voice, a calm, rational, placid voice that kept poking her with a sharp fingernail and telling her that she wasn’t the only person in this marriage, and she wasn’t the only person that she was denying when she had entered this period of sudden celibacy. Aiden was suffering as well. She knew that he was missing their previous intimacy. On the days when she woke up before him, she could feel his erection pressing into her backside where he was spooned up close against her, and on the days when he was up first, she could feel the chill emanating from the shower. He had never pressed her, never once mentioned the fact that their wonderful progress had ground to a screeching halt overnight. He had never expressed any dissatisfaction or frustration, but she knew that he must be feeling it, and in a way, she’d feel better if he was angry with her, because then she could be angry with him back instead of being angry with herself.
It was the ultimate paradox. She shouldn’t want to have sex, but at the same time, she was supposed to satisfy her husband, wasn’t she? She was hardly being a good wife if she was leaving him wanting all the time like this. There was no wonder that he’d stopped sleeping in the same bed as her.
Maybe, as long as she didn’t enjoy it, it was all right. She’d be performing her duty as a wife, performing a necessary sacrifice to make sure her husband was well satisfied; surely she couldn’t be considered a whore if she was doing that, surely that couldn’t be living in sin. The only trouble was, of course, that Aiden loved her, would never do anything to hurt her, and would certainly never make love to her without ensuring that she was enjoying herself just as much as he was. He’d rather not have sex at all than have it and think that Belle was just performing a necessary chore.
And she didn’t want it to be a chore. She had so many happy memories of learning with Aiden, of discovering all the ways that he could make her body sing, and her his. She didn’t want that to be marred with any experiences that were anything less than pleasant.
Maybe women just couldn’t win. It all went back to Eve. She was still being punished for the original sin. She was a whore if she had sex, and she was a bad wife if she didn’t. There was no way out. She should have just become a nun and have done with it.
Belle grabbed her pillow and threw it across the room with a scream of frustration, grabbing Aiden’s from his empty side of the bed and burying her face in it, bursting into a flood of hot, angry tears.
She missed her husband. She missed having sex with him. She missed feeling all the wonderful things that he could make her feel. She wanted him so badly, and she hated herself for wanting him. She hated herself for having let the nuns get under her skin, but now that they were there, she couldn’t get them out again. It was like they’d taken over, making her feel guilty about things that she had just about managed to stop feeling guilty about.
She felt worthless, like an entire part of her identity had been ripped away and replaced with that one hateful, horrible word. Whore.
She screamed into the pillow, beating it with her fists. To the outsider, she would have looked mad. She felt mad; she was so full of self-loathing and conflicting thoughts that she could well have been going insane for all the sense her own mind was making to her at the moment.
Deep down, she knew that it was not her fault, that it was the worldview she had been brought up into that was deeply flawed and contradictory in itself. She’d always known this, and the fact that she could no longer view these things rationally made her hate herself all the more.
“Belle?”
Aiden crept into the room, picking up her thrown pillow as he came across, sitting down on the bed beside her and taking her in his arms. Belle let herself be held, leaning into his side as the pillow absorbed her snotty sobs.
She wondered how long this breakdown had been in coming. Would she have been all right if she had never gone back to Storybrooke, or had that just hastened it? Had she just been ignoring all the warning signs before, going too fast because it felt too good?
“Oh Belle, my love.” Aiden held her tighter, kissing the top of her head. “You’ll be ok, I promise.”
That was the problem, though. Belle didn’t think that she was going to be ok. She had reached a cliff, tumbled over, and was now in freefall. She didn’t know how she was going to claw her way back from this. All she knew was that Aiden’s arms were around her and she didn’t ever want him to let go. Since before their marriage, she had always felt safe in his arms, and she needed the comfort he brought her now.
Finally, there were no more tears to come, and she wiped her face, resting her aching head against Aiden’s chest.
“What do you need, my love?” he whispered. “What can I do to make it better?”
Belle shook her head.
“I don’t think that there’s anything you or I can do,” she mumbled.
“Oh.”
He sounded so crestfallen, so defeated. He wanted to help her so badly, and she had no idea how he could.
She had no idea how she could help herself.

Estate planning is a process that should ideally start when you are still fairly young, and continue throughout your life. For most people, the first step is having a simple Last Will and Testament put in place, and then from there, add additional options over time. As your estate grows and evolves with you and your family, you will need to have trusts in place to help avoid probate, ensure privacy, prevent contest, protect your assets, minimize expenses, and minimize/defer death tax exposure. Learn more about Wills and trusts to see what type of testamentary planning you may benefit you and your family.
