TrueNAS SCALE Server Build for Home Lab
TrueNAS SCALE Server Build for Home Lab #homelab #virtualization #TrueNASSCALEHomeServer #HomeServerSetup #DebianLinuxServer #RAIDConfiguration #FileSharingServer #MediaStreamingServer #HomeAutomationHub #NetworkSecurity #ServerHardwareUpgrades #selfhost
There are so many options for running a home server for storage and virtualization needs on a home network. I have run VMware ESXi and Proxmox servers for my virtualization needs for the past few years now. However, until recently, I only ran TrueNAS inside a virtual machine for testing and a few light-duty applications. A project I wanted to tackle was repurposing one of my SuperMicro mini…

I know what you are thinking–this isn't Mac stuff, but it is Mac adjacent since even Mac users need storage solutions that Apple doesn't provide.
What is HexOS?
According to their site:
"Storage, streaming, virtual machines and more. Create a secure, private server you can manage from anywhere with HexOS."
Continuing down the page:
"Simple Setup HexOS is designed for users with simplicity in mind. The setup wizard automatically validates your hardware, partitions your system as needed, and guides you through the setup process in minutes. Hardware Agnostic Other NAS solutions mostly limit you to their own expensive hardware. HexOS gives you the freedom to choose and change hardware on your own. Easily add more storage one drive at a time. Powerful & Flexible Quickly configure your home server for anything you desire. Store data, stream content, run games and virtual machines, plus so much more. Simply install the apps of your choice and go."
Sounds good on the surface, and someday perhaps next year if the project doesn't fall behind we will see more.
Pricing
Lifetime License: $199/server (early access) then $299/server
Currently on sale until 12/2/24 for $99/server.
Analysis
The product is in early beta so it can't really be judged. However, it is just TrueNAS SCALE under the hood. Which brings me to my only point I will make right now: this is a lot of money for a free product.
So what is the value proposition? It boils down to ease of use. I think that is really what you are paying for. Simple interface that hand holds you through the process much like Unifi does with networking.
The question really boils down to:
How long do you think this idea is going to last? Do you think this new project will last beyond 2-3 years?
Do believe that the products features will grow to be a better value fit for the price?
This is the first TrueNAS partner product–do you see this a becoming a fraught relationship down the road in the vein of RedHat and CentOS?
Right now the product requires a connection to their dashboard in the cloud. Someday they will release a local version–do you think that is going to happen, and are you okay if it doesn't?
Conclusion
There really isn't much conclusion to have. I just wanted to post for awareness of the product, and to pose some questions to those thinking of taking the plunge.
