De neus van Michael Jackson

Op Flickr vond ik foto´s van Jan Ronald Crans, die net als ik de tentoonstelling Vodou had bezocht in het Amsterdamse Tropenmuseum, in 1996 of 1997. Jan Ronald Crans vat de expositie als volgt samen:

´Levensgrote poppen, potten met bovennatuurlijke krachten, een Vodou-altaar en magische tekens. Het Tropenmuseum is nog tot mei in de ban van deze mysterieuze kunstvoorwerpen. Wie echter aan met spelden doorboorde poppen denkt, heeft het mis. Deze hebben meer te maken met 'voodoo', dat geassocieerd wordt met Hollywoodiaanse horrorfilmproducties. In het Tropenmuseum blijkt Vodou veel meer in te houden dan wraakzuchtige machten en krachten. Vodou is de Afro-Amerikaanse volksreligie van Haïti. De naam is waarschijnlijk afkomstig van het Afrikaanse woord 'Vodun', dat kracht of onzichtbare geest betekent. De Vodou-priesters zelf spreken over de Lwa. Lwa's zijn geesten maar laten zich het beste vergelijken met katholieke heiligen en engelen. Dat is niet toevallig. Vodou ontstond namelijk uit een mengelmoes van godsdienstige ideeën en rituelen afkomstig van Afrikaanse slaven, inheemse indianen en christenen. Het katholicisme heeft in de loop der tijd meer dan eens geprobeerd het Vodou geloof uit te bannen. Dit is altijd tevergeefs geweest: de Haïtiaanse bevolking is nog immer nauw verbonden met Vodou.´

Ik ging naar die tentoonstelling omdat een artikel in Trouw mijn belangstelling wekte. Ik las een interessant betoog van een dichteres over Vodou, en haar overtuiging dat Michael Jackson een praktiserend aanhanger was. Ze verwees daarbij naar zijn neus, die na operaties opzettelijk zou zijn verwijderd, om plaats te maken voor een kunststof variant.

Misschien was dat waar, wellicht niet. Net als Jan Ronald Crans vond ik de tentoonstelling in al z´n griezeligheid fascinerend en ook wel beangstigend. Maar dat kan ook aan de uitgekiende belichting hebben gelegen.

Smuggled to survival

Henriëtte Pimentel (1876–1943) was the director of the daycare center on Plantage Middenlaan. With a small group of allies, she smuggled approximately 600 Jewish children from the center to safe hiding places. On Tuesday, April 19, the Henriëtte Pimentel Bridge will be unveiled. I am Yuca, the root and the starch. I have a complaint, I know it is our ancestral tradition to gather and sing but I don’t speak the language. 

In the whiteness I need to figure out a way to relate to the whiteness. The whiteness we are in, gallery 3, a neutral canvas without any links whatsoever to the concept of white supremacy, the same way zwarte piet has nothing to do with colonialism.

It is not that the subject of my artistic practice is colonialism, it is that nearly every single person whose opinion I hold dear has been subjected to colonialism.

In des fest das Huhns, an Austrian mockumentary from the perspective of a fictional African film crew, you see images of native Austrians dancing, the narrator explains that while African culture specializes in dance and song, Europeans are said to be more of a culture of the written word.

This part of the documentary touches upon something essential about the European way of seeing and describing others. The superiority is implied, a neutral “reality” based on “civility”. After all, we are asked to not disrespect the awkward shuffling of white bodies in circles. It’s not their fault, it’s not their culture.

My invited guests, my countrymen, my countrywomen, my countrythems, what do we do in this white space? A space described as neutral while it is as artificial as the concept of white supremacy itself? How much of myself and my ancestors will I lay bare for assessment by an institution? 

How much access to my racialized body do I grant the Royal Academy in order to secure a profession?  

The things I have made I will put up for display the way the West is used to, the same way Ritual objects for Winti belonging to my ancestors are in “Het Tropenmuseum.” I don’t need to tell you how they got there, my countrythems. 

I don’t speak the language my parents do, I called in help from my friend, Chévany Kartodimedjo, who owns a Surinamese dictionary to make sure I can pass on my complaint to our ancestors.

'Out of Time' installation @ Hotel d'Astier, Forcalquier, France 2023

A major solo exhibition and site-specific installation, Out of Time at Hotel d'Astier, Forcalquier, France.

The renaissance courtyard installation, Hot Air evoked the night sky, hot air balloons, and a miniature universe. Meticulously crafted and subtly revealing, this installation established the links between colonial behaviours, global warming, pandemics, and our fragile world. As well as the underlying deeper meanings the work is also uplifting and evoked a sense of play and wonder. Each globe resembles a hot air balloon and appears to float across the space with objects associated with global warming hanging in place of where the balloons basket; a gun, toy oil tankard, iPhone, coal basket to name a few.

Susan’s interest in the politics of feminism and the body has led to a series of dress sculptures including, Territory Dress, 2018, commissioned by and on permanent display in Our Colonial Inheritance at the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam and Colonial Dress, which in the collection of the House of European History in Brussels.

For this exhibition Susan created a new sculptural dress, entitled Europa, the sculpture reflects her time in France and questions recent historic events in Europe, including the war in Ukraine, Brexit and mass migration.

The title of the exhibition was inspired by the Blur song Out of Time –

Bij Noordje komt iedereen overal vandaan, wat een rijkdom aan culturen heeft Amsterdam! Noordje wordt daar blij van.  Nu is er in het Tropenmuseum een tentoonstelling over onze koloniale erfenis…. wat? kolonel….kolibrie..  Neeeeee, maar weet je wat, ga mee zaterdag 15 juli met Noordje naar het Museum en Noordje vertelt je er alles over en laat je de tentoonstelling zien. Noordje is ook benieuwd naar jouw achtergrond en misschien heeft het kolonialisme daar ook wat mee te maken. Wie weet!
