Speaking of regular-sized people vs big monsters I really recommend:
The Host (2006) or Gwoemul is a Korean creature feature that focuses on a family trying to regain their youngest member after a river monster steals her.
Tumblr media
[id: A primarily yellow-toned movie poster for the film 'The Host' depicting a young girl being grabbed by a monster's tail and dragged into a large river with a city in the background. /end id]
The Troll Hunter (2010) or Trolljegeren is a Norwegian found footage film documenting the work of a secret state-sanctioned troll hunter in Norway who wants to show to the public that trolls are fucking real and dangerous.
Tumblr media
[id: A cold/blue-toned movie poster with yellow text showing a vehicle driving up a desolate road toward the legs of a massive troll.
Film title: Troll Hunter
Review quote: Pretty god-damn spectacular /end id]
(Just pls watch shit with people fighting big monsters other than Attack on Titan, there's some good shit out there if you look)

I finally got around to watch Askeladden i Dovregubbens hall, and while my expectations were high, the movie was okay. I really appreciated the scenery and the very Norwegian soundtrack but I felt like Espens actor was missing the whole 'Espen Askeladden'. Not that he's bad actor, he just didn't have that spark (can be said for a lot of the actors) Although there were some great moments though like
they did stick a lot to the original story and I love that very much. I also loved the clueless danish king. And words cannot describe how joyful I was when I saw huldrar and nøkken! Although my favorite thing was surprisingly Per's character. My favorite scene gotta be when Per comforts Espen and when he said "You see things we others don't" I just kinda went.... "lmao he's just like aph norway"💀
Nevertheless, while it wasn't the best movie to exist, my childhood self is quite happy and satisfied honestly. Can we get a Norway as Askeladden? :)
It's been so long since I've seen that movie 😭 but I very much agree with you that the main character don't have quite the right "vibe" for askeladden?? I feel like he should have been younger and have a different attitude with certain stuff? And while drawing him I realized that the movie feels a lot more like "fantasy" than "folk tale", which is many what I was missing from it. It's not really that overall 17-18th century feel to it, and the outfits contribute to that.
Per and Pål are okay, but my issue is that I don't really think they feel like brothers?? idk how to explain it, but it feels like they don't really go together, and I think it would have helped if Askeladden would have been younger so we clear can see the age difference.
I don't mean to shit on the movie - it is entertaining enough, and as you said; the scenery is amazing, and they do a good job of portraying a varity of creatures from norwegian folk tales ✨ maybe I need to watch it again, and Soria Moria too
as I mentioned: not a fan out the costumes, so I had to do a comparison to Ivo Caprino's stop motion designs because they will always be perfect to me. I hope you can see what I mean with the "fantasy look" compared to the more "18th century vibe"

If you wanna watch a Troll movie that's actually pretty cool, and a bit brutal, I'd recommend the Norwegian movie "Trolljegeren" It's kind of a found footage movie, but back when they were still scary, and goes the alternate reality route. To be fair I haven't watched it since it came out, but I do remember being pretty spooked as a teen.
I think... I actually watched this movie on a whim before. It was localized on the streaming service I saw it on as "Troll Hunter" though.

i watched the new 'Troll' last night after excessive promotion of it
(here a pic of the area in front of the oslo main train station from last week, it is a big foot print)
Tumblr media
(they played loud troll sounds too)
so anyways.. popcorn film, but it takes itself too seriously. like 2010 trolljegeren was soooo much better, and it is very obvious that it took much inspo from that film. if you want a good norsk troll film go and watch that one instead.
it was also a bit cheesy in spots
i did appreciate nice shots of oslo <3 though i had wished the troll would have destroyed the horrible brutalist town hall instead of the freia sign
but on a more serious note, especially with the political landscape, it felt a bit like a military propaganda film, especially towards the end..

Dyed my eyebrows, trimmed my face, posted to patreon, worked on biznuz stuff - and had a dream that god was a man eating, rabies infested Norwegian troll so I woke up and watched Trolljegeren to soothe the weird feelings. Okay day.

Trolljegeren is a great film. I recommend everyone go see it. And, at least in Norway, it IS on Netflix.
not disappointed in the youtube audience for the first time ever today as i finished a video about found footage films "iceberg" in which the host didn't mention Trollhunter at all, and when i went to the comments dozens of people were already asking him why he skipped it. i'm not starting a conversation about our fav found footage movies etc etc today, i've got a watch list already, i just want to say that Trollhunter is so good, and so underrated, and so inexplicably obscure, while being imo, arguably, just in my imo, in the top three found footage films ever made if not the best one. don't look up anything about it, just find it and watch it blind, trust me.

what is your favorite norwegian movie?
It might actually just be Trolljegeren?? I think it's one of the best made and well executed Norwegian movies.
A lot of Norwegian movies are not good in my opinion, all the acting feels so off and completely fake - but there are some good ones, and all historical movies are good for some reason?? But they're all movies I don't really have the need to watch again.
And then you have the classics with Flåklypa Grand Prix, Operasjon Løvsprett, and all the Olsenbanden movies ofc 🙏 those are all movies I enjoy greatly and can watch again and again.
