The 24 Days in the Bubble | WJ Canada

CHAPTER 3 | SELECTION CAMP

Summary- Selection Camp begins. Y/N and Kaiden begin getting closer. Y/N also makes some new friends. Selection camp can’t be that bad, right? And final cuts are made. Does Y/N make it onto the final roster?

NOVEMBER 16, 2020

“Hey Y/N!” Kirby said, as you entered the locker room where you, and 46 boys were dressing for the start of selection camp.

”Hey Dacher!” You said, walking over to your stall, putting down your backpack, and pulling out your phone to text your family.

’About to go in for the first day of selection camp! Love you guys!’ Was the text you typed out to the groupchat you had made with your best friends and family before hitting the send button and putting your phone away.

“Alrighty guys, are you already?” Andre said, adjusting his mask.

A mix of “Yeah!” and “Yes!” were thrown around the room.

After getting out on the ice, selection camp in Red Deer began.

“Hey, you’re doing great out there!” Kaiden said, skating up to you and tapping his stick on your kneepad.

“Thanks Kaiden! Not to bad yourself!” You said, touching his helmet as he went back to skating and stickhandling.

“Soooo what's that about?” Jamie asked, when you turned toward the other end of the ice, not realizing he was standing there.

“Holy shit Jamie! What are you doing here?” You asked, eyes wide.

“Uhh I’m at selection camp... why wouldn’t I be? But you and Kaiden like each other. Just admit it.” Jamie asked, giggling and wrapping his arm around your shoulder, pulling you into his side.

“What? No!” You said, skating away from him and hearing Jamie laugh so hard you were sure he had tears coming out of his eyes.

Anyways, you couldn’t really decide if it selection camp was easy or not. You couldn’t feel your legs, and it seemed like nobody else could either. Andre and the assistant coaches made all of the players stick handle, timed skates to the far blue line and back, and a few of the players helped the goalies by shooting slap shots at them and acted like you were in a shoot out.

NOVEMBER 21, 2020

You were just about to leave your room to go to the locker room for the first intersquad game when you heard your phone ringing. You looked over and saw that Andre was calling you.

“Hello?” You asked, picking up your backpack from the floor, sitting down on the hotel bed.

“Y/N? We just found out that a non-core staff member tested positive for covid and they had come in contact with assistant coaches, Michael Dyck and Jason Labarbera so they are quarantining. We don’t have to cancel the intersquad games so far, though. Just a heads up and wanted to let you know.” Andre said.

“Oh I hope they’re okay! Thank you for letting me know!” You said.

“Yep, no problem. See you in a few minutes.” Andre said, hanging up.

You put your phone in your back pocket and sighed. This was the type of stuff you would have to deal with.. and really what anyone in the bubble would have to deal with. You put your mask on and opened your hotel room door, and headed to the locker room of the area you and 46 other guys were playing at.

“Y/N! Y/N!” Kirby called, passing the puck to you. ‘Shoot the puck. Shoot the puck.’ was all that you were thinking while skating as fast as you can down the ice. You shot it, and it went in, past the goalie that would possibly be on the final roster along with you, and a bunch of other guys. “Yeah!” Kirby said, hugging you and laughing while your other linemates tapped each others helmets. You gave your bench high fives and sat down on the bench as the puck dropped again. “Nice job.” Jamie said, tapping your helmet as you sat down next to him. “Thanks!” You said.

A few minutes later, when the period ended, you stood up from your seat on the bench when you heard someone calling your name. You turn and see Kaiden.

“Hey Y/N! That was a sick goal!” Kaiden said, smiling down at you.

You laughed. “Thank you Kaiden!”

“Yeah well I better score one or else I can’t be here with you on the final roster.” Kaiden said, laughing.

“What? What if I’m not on the final roster? Why so sure of yourself, Guhle?” You asked.

“Y/N, you’re an amazing player. Why wouldn’t you be on the final roster?” Kaiden said, looking at you.

“T-thanks. You’re an amazing player too.” You said, heart starting to beat faster.

“Well Jamie is probably going to come looking for us if you don’t go.” Kaiden said, smiling at you.

“Yeah! Stalkerrr vibess!!! Anyways, see ya Kaiden, and good luck!” You said, turning around and fast walking down the tunnel.

‘Why does Kaiden make you feel like this if I only liked him as a friend? I mean he does have a really cute smile, and face, and hair, and... oh my god. Do I have a crush on Kaiden?’ You thought while walking into the dressing room.

“You’ve got something on your mind?” Braden asked, while sitting in his stall.

“Not really, just focused on the game.” You said, smiling over at Braden, knowing the words that just came out of your mouth was a complete lie.

“Okay.. but Y/N.. I’m always here to talk if you need me.” Braden said, getting up from his stall and going over to the dressing room door as the 2nd period was just about to start.

Maybe you should talk to Braden. Especially since you didn’t have your mom or best friends to talk to in person. You thought Braden would be a safe space to talk to about things.

NOVEMBER 24, 2020

“Y/N?” Andre said through the phone, with his voice sounding a bit stressed and frantic.

“Hey! What’s up?” You ask, putting your stick tape in your bag, getting ready to head down to the locker room for the last intersquad game.

“Two of the players tested positive for covid. We have to post-pone the last game. I just wanted to let you know so you don’t get all of your stuff together for nothing. Have a great day and contact me, Michael, or Mitch if you have any symptoms.” Andre said.

“Oh my god. Okay that you Andre. You stay safe too.” You said before hanging up and immediately texting the group chat with you, Kaiden, Kirby, Braden, Jamie. The people you were closest with during this whole quarantine thing.

‘guys did you hear about the covid positives?’ You type out, hitting send and immediately seeing speech bubble pop up on your screen.

Kaiden Guhle :)

Yeah. I’m disappointed. That means we’re stuck in this hotel room for 14 days.

You and the group chat ended up facetiming for two hours. You told your parents about the two covid cases among the players. They were scared you were going to get covid, but you told them about the 14 day hotel room situation and they calmed down. (thankfully)

You had to get used to this. It was part of being “apart of camp.”

DECEMBER 8, 2020

Some time had pasted and December finally had come. Well, you shouldn’t be that excited about it. It meant cuts and the final cuts to the roster were coming. Kaiden and a bunch of other people were very reassuring when it came to your worries about being cut.

Coach Andre made an announcement via email stating that the first cuts had been made. The players were, Matthew Robertson, Mason Millman, Xavier Simoneau, Daemon Hunt, and Ridly Greig, leaving you and 41 other players in camp.

When you read the email, and didn’t see your name, you felt like a weight was lifted off your shoulders... but, you still had 3 more days till the final cuts were made from the roster.

DECEMBER 10, 2020

That day, seven more players were cut from camp. The players being goalies Brett Brochu and Tristan Lennox, and forwards Adam Beckman, Tyson Foerster, Hendrix Lapierre, Cole Schwindt, and Shane Wright, leaving you and 34 other players in camp.

‘One more day.’ Was what you were telling yourself, trying to ease the anxiety of being cut.

“You aren’t going to get cut, Y/N/N. I know your not.” Kirby reassured you through facetime.

“We’ll see Kirby, we will see.”

DECEMBER 11, 2020 (FINAL CUTS TO THE ROSTER)

You heard a knock at your hotel door, quickly getting up from your bed, and tossing on a hoodie. When you opened the door, you saw a few staff members and one seemed to be holding a phone.

“Hey Y/N! We have a few people who want to talk to you!” The staff member said, making you put on a confused face before them handing you the phone. You saw your mom, dad, and brother gathered all around the screen.

“Hey sweetie!” Your mom said.

“Hi guys!” You said, looking down at the phone, seeing a bunch of smiley parents and brother.

“Congratulations, honey! You made it onto the final roster for Team Canada!” Your dad said, your mouth immediately dropping and looking at the camera crew and staff members, wiping tears that came down your face from being so happy.

“Really? I really did it?” You asked, jumping up and down.

“This is not a reaction we’ve gotten before.” One of the staff members mumbled to the other, slightly chuckling.

After saying goodbye to your mom, dad, brother, and staff members, you went back into your hotel room and immediately check your email, making sure you, Kirby, Kaiden, Jamie, or Braden weren’t cut from the roster as they were the people you were closest to.

“We’ve made the final cuts to the roster. Team Canada is releasing forwards Mavrick Bourque, Graeme Clarke, Gage Goncalves, Seth Jarvis, Samuel Poulin, and Jamieson Rees and defensemen Lukas Cormier, Ryan O’Rourke, and Donovan Sebrango. Thank you.” You mumbled out, not seeing any of your friends names, smiling even wider. You then texted Kaiden to congradulate him.

Wow, you did it. You really did it.

NOTE: I am well aware that there are a shit-ton of Knights, but I decided to just work with 50 because I’m supposed to be asleep and some of them don’t have enough of a personality for me to make accurate judgments on them

1. Sir Mordred (I have a thing for questionable morals and misunderstood characters. I could write an essay on my love for him)

2. Sir Galahad (pure boy. Deserved better. I also ship him with Mordred)

3. Sir Gareth (SUNSHINE BOY)

4. King Galehaut (underrated and probably definitely gay for Lancelot)

5. Sir Kay (lovable asshole)

6. Sir Gawain (“and Sir Gawain lay in his gay bed”)

9. Sir Percival (other sunshine boy)

Things should be more in the hands of the individual to control his circumstances etc and there should be more common ground n common wished things to be what is the "governance" or direction, or way of things for people n not this estranged n official n contrived government structure which is really what is the rule of the devil n is actually a representation of the devil. The government is supposed to be a false rule, a false god, other than the people. Availability, space etc to have my view n be okay is not what has occurred here in this country of the United States, which, to talk in a way not so welcome here, is actually a place not possible to exist. It's really what is the reason for the occurrence of the myth n legend n tale of the Bermuda Triangle. The United States is really the storied Bermuda Triangle, I've been told in my mind. The Bermuda Triangle is a area in the ocean near the United States where things are said to disappear n never been seen again, but it's supposed to be challenged as true the area exists or that things really disappeared there. I'm told in my mind that the United States is where the devil is to have apparently arranged to be things he's not supposed to be able be in other countries where it's supposed to be not as less than to tell the truth, such as that it is not real here, ie this reality of the world. It is said it is more less than to tell the truth in the United States which is supposed to show how superior it is to sell out to the devil n act like this present reality is the only truth, this present reality of things like how it is in the United States most of all however, which has no queen, ie monarchy (which is more like the actual nature of the rule where one figure -- really the devil but it's hidden -- is really in charge and kind of unfairly so); w an eagle on it's seal/emblem instead of a more mythological looking creature or something; and a serious-looking flag design also; w a history of supposed leaders of high esteem so prepared by going to what's supposed to be the finest n best universities etc. Lots of issues involved in this situation of my being disempowered that are unfair. There is a world domination here where some people are less in power and poorer than others, ie inferior as who believe in magic etc or who can somehow seem -- if its true people aren't inferior not to be a certain favored way such as showing "aptitude" in math n science etc, which is favored in this present way of things -- to suggest of another knowing or contribution other than presently held as so sought after or appreciated or made so apparent. With this governmental structure dominating in the present reality of the world, which is really a false reality ruled by the devil, blacks all over the world are typically supposed to be inferior n the tribal people n people in the Congo etc, who would seem to be knowing of magic or be suggestive of having a more broad inclusion of things n have more creative ideas of things. The rule of the world w governments etc asserts pretty much, as I'm aware, that magic is not real etc. It is making a field day environment for the devil to attack people, ie for the devil to attack me n not be recognized as attack or for what it is. This American society has many other stereotypical instances of attack of the individual in which the individual is to others something other than who the person is to himself. I am someone to be contexted or identifiable as mentally ill here in this society. (I don't agree w mental illness as true.) This, ie mental illness, is not the exact apparent experience of the main characters in the movies I referred to, but it is pretty much my experience that this is who I am supposed to be in the context n truth of this society I am in presently in the United States n it is suggested as a possible context for a rising expression of what can be a person's experience here that is outside the familiar bounds of the society n government operation for protection n service etc. There has been reports of people kidnapped in instances of forced hospitalization for so called mental illness. There has been reports n much surfacing information on people being called "targeted individuals" that are said to be targets for covert attack by government agents using some technology to make issues that are to this point mostly only classified as mental illness, such as hearing talking n harassment in the mind. Other things surfacing are mirroring my experience where I'm being ignored or not recognized that I am being attacked by what's supposed to be ordinary on benevolent practices of the society. It's creating an alternate reality, and alternate story n telling that is a quiet storm on this reality continuing as it has pretending no story other than the official can dominate or claim the flow of information or the norm or what's commonly told as what's truly happening. I can forward some examples of this kind of expressed phenomena or happenings. Like I said, i tried to recently collect some things for my seeking to be recognized as n get some attention etc as a refugee. I had to learn about the term refugee n etc. Things are not really easy to understand etc for an actual person present here, the stuff is supposed to be foreign (in the rule of the devil) that is the workings of things. One thing i say that contradicts the truth asserted as true of this present reality is I say people are not really present in their form. I am attacked very bad by the devil here w very bad torment, magic, physical things to my face, appearance, etc, things that are supposed to be known here as something other than they are to me. This is something now w this rising tide or emerging information that can be contexted or matched or mirrored as an experience something like that of the targeted individual. The devil tormenting me some now. It tries to tell me it's telling me what to say. People are supposed to be less than to the devil here w what the devil seeks as the rule here. It tries to act like people do not really exist n that it is some origin etc of people, it's extremely disgusting n irritating. But I wish for change n to be able to have something other than this present way of things in the world as the way of things seems to me from appearances from the outside looking in mostly n not much experience outside of the US. In the way of things in the United States I've experienced that control is too much out of the hands of the individual. Please help me as a refugee n i can move forward. I am stopped or paused now or have been in the country of the United States as someone saying that the truth has not been what's told here as to the history n whats really happening -- for the most part (but things are cumulatively arising to challenge n change that, as I'm telling here). I said in spring 2014 that this reality is ruled by the devil n that people were not really mentally ill to experience hearing talking in the mind n other things said to be illness here, such as bad sadness here in devil land. I soon after that began being attacked by the society structure, things are very out of the hands of the individual, very hard to manage, as alluded to in the two movies I mentioned. Other movies, such as movies about crazed stalkers in love w unattainable objects of their affection, hint at this culture in the United States where the individual is at the mercy of the truth of or overridden by the truth of the crowd but that is not exactly as it is outwardly stated in this reality. It's supposed to just be that the truth of the crowd n reality of the crowd is superior to that of the individual in many other instances, such as w Paula Dean n others having what was considered unwelcome things to say at points n they were met w rebuke of the crowd losing job positions, but I don't support people having to work however. Work is slavery n enslavement to the rule of the devil, it's forced labor here. But this culture in the country of the United States singles out n attacks the individual. It holds n asserts as true for people to be many things outside the norm -- such as mentally ill -- that are things to be considered inferior to what others are as supposedly normal. The devil, as I was writing this at a point, kept trying to press i was not who was writing this. It was supposed to be from some other source other than myself. It's extremely bad torment n attack. But the governmental structures the devil has arranged for here, they favor the crowd, it is a god that is worshiped here, the crowd. It is evil, the crowd. There is a false n superficial standard set by the crowd, where others are supposed to be inferior to not be blending in n etc. But poverty w government structures n their money systems: a very bad restraint on people. I am not w much means. I have also been homeless here, a home not so accessible to people here. These examples also of how a person, ie individual is disempowered or having less freedom than should be seen as beneficial, ie good etc for the whole/greater good. I will forward more information n try to look into more things about getting to Australia or New Zealand. I read New Zealand has had fewer refugees, which may mean it's more available or beneficial for me to go there because I am not normal n maybe this occurrence means the country can deal w a abnormal situation or is more prepared for one person as who ends the world. Really I am the only person here present in my form in the world as it is known, which is really ruled by the devil. But I am not sure if New Zealand is to so be having to be this kind of situation. I suppose I somewhat prefer Australia, but I wish to go where it is best. I can try to get more situated to live in Australia later, hypothetically, as I wish to live there, but I am interested in New Zealand also. Confession...I was wrong

For starters and before I get to my sorry prediction....

What is the first thing we all do when we don’t like something or someone? Yes, we start making excuses for why something is or isn’t. Why a team is better than my team or why this person got the job or raise and I didn’t or why their life is better than mine. This list goes on-and-on.

Let’s just be real, and stop with the facade, our flesh doesn’t particularly like when other people get something we think we “deserve.” Our flesh doesn’t like when someone else is earning/achieving success, while we (our team) is being slighted (or so we believe). See, there is always an excuse and if there isn’t an excuse we try to demean or terror down other people’s blessings, because the fact is, we are jealous and envious creatures. This is not a secret and if you haven’t noticed this yet, perhaps, the problem has been pinpointed for you.

If you don’t think so, we don’t have to look any further than a 1-year-old. They have been on Earth less than 365 days and are as innocent as anything on the planet yet their nature is to be selfish. What happens when there is a toy they want? What happens when they want your attention? What happens when they want to eat, sleep, or be changed? Yes, we’ve been selfish beings since the garden.

Type in jealousy and envy into google and see what the Bible has to say. The list is endless. The reason being is God knows what He created. He knew our flesh would be entrenched with those two things. But there are also plenty of verses with wisdom to overcome two of the things that weigh down our hearts.

What does this have to do with the NBA Finals?

You don’t have to look any further than Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to see this rear its ugly head. I’m picking something that really means very little in the grand scheme of things, but is just a minor example of how this plays out.

In 2010, when LeBron left for Miami down I-95, the Cavs fans were obviously irate. They said they would have been okay if James just would have done it a different way. Maybe so, maybe not. Everyone was mad that James joined up with Wade and Bosh down in South Beach, and the “Big 3″ won two titles in four seasons together. Just bring up some Tweets/Facebook posts from July of 2010. Yikes!

Then, “The King” returned to Cleveland, only to be welcomed back with open arms. I won’t reference the “prodigal son” story from the Bible (that would be too easy), but all was great again! James was returning to Cleveland for redemption. The Cavs just drafted Andrew Wiggins with the No. 1 overall pick and had top picks Anthony Bennett and Kyrie Irving on the roster. He was finally going to do it his way and bring NE Ohio that long awaited title.

Wiggins was in Cleveland long enough to see the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame before being shipped to Minnesota with Bennett for All-Star Kevin Love. The 6-foot-10 Oregon-native was coming off a season where he averaged 26 points/12.5 rebound/4.4 assists and shot 46 percent from the field, 38 percent from 3-point range, and 82 percent at the line.

I would say that’s a pretty good get, how about you? No one fried Love, because he was leaving a team that gets very little publicity in Minnesota, but the heat once again turned to LeBron. He can’t do it on his own...he needs help...a real great player wouldn’t allow this...he isn’t Jordan....Jordan never needed help (really?)...the flames were burning bright once again. The fact that he came back to his roots allowed him some grace this time around, because he wasn’t leaving, but rather bringing in, but it still focused on LeBron and not Love.

Needless to say, Cleveland fans have very little to be upset about considering it re-added James as well, who was coming off another fantastic year in Miami.

Let’s get to Durant...

No franchise in the history of sports would turn down a player with Durant’s status. Can we stop with the “we wouldn’t take him or we wouldn’t want him on our team.” I mean, to be honest, that is laughable. Right?

A player or person can chose to work with or work for whoever they choose. Sometimes people’s choices are just a little different. Durant was choosing between millions and millions, and I’m contemplating math or social studies. I think we often forget these players are also human. If you don’t want to live in Minnesota, Oklahoma City, etc, you don’t have to. I know for myself, it would be very hard for me to take a job that took me a state away from my family let alone all the way across country.

When a player gets drafted, they don’t really have much choice as to where they are going to live (with the exception of E. Manning/Elway). You may say, well they are making a lot of money. Sure, that’s true, but money amounts to nothing if you are missing out on the things that really matter in this life.

If you want to work with your buddy, and have that opportunity to do so or joining a more successful or established business/company, would you not do it? Just because it’s basketball or any sport for that matter, that doesn’t mean fans or “experts” should dictate where players choose to play/live or what should be there moral compass for their decision. Let’s just stop with that. This is basketball! Yes, it’s a business and brings plenty of money to the economy, but it’s not that serious. It’s a game, one a lot of us love and enjoy, but it’s a game at the end of the day.

Instead of constantly complaining or making excuses, let’s just sit back and enjoy the greatness of all of these remarkable players in this series. Like my dad always says, if you don’t like it, turn the channel and don’t read about it. Problem solved!

My Prediction was, for lack of a better term, “turrible” in my best Charles Barkley voice...

As I’ve watched the first two games of the NBA Finals, it’s apparent, the Cavaliers aren’t on the same level from top-to-bottom with the Warriors. In other words, my predictions was way off. I mean, off like most of my test scores in college.

I know, I know, the Cavs were down to 2-0 last season, but this is a different animal. This Warriors team is on another level and appear to be mission-minded.This coming from a guy that picked the Cavs and is still trying to figure out if I’m rooting for them. It’s just so hard to not like the way G State plays. It’s the way the game was meant to be played and it’s really fun to watch. As a buddy of mine noted, last year, Harrison Barnes was missing those open shots, but this year Kevin Durant is the one taking those shots. No offense to Barnes, he is a good player, but he isn’t KD.

Last season, the first two games favored Golden State by +48 compared to this season’s +41. The difference being, a year go, Draymond Green scored 44 points in the first two games and the Warriors bench dominated Cleveland in those games (85-40). Golden State’s “Big 3″ last season (Curry, Thompson, & Green) scored just 99 of the 214 points (46%). Curry had just 29 points in those contests compared to 60 this season.

The difference in all of this is KD. When the well went dry a year ago, there was no Durant to pick up the scoring. Harrison Barnes was 5-of-32 from the field scoring a total of 15 points in the closeout games (5, 6, and 7). KD has a playoff average of nearly 29 points per game shooting close to 47% from the field. I would find it hard to believe, okay I don’t believe it at all, that Durant will score 15 points with the Warriors only needing two more wins. Again, series is over! TV ratings are the only thing left to debate and analyze. Breen, Jackson, and Van Gundy will need plenty of filler material as well. Get the one-liners ready!

The first two games, our sample size, has showed me the Warriors are better in almost every aspect of the game, which includes toughness (the reason I picked Cleveland). They seem to be in 5th gear at all times, while the Cavs are trying to get out of first in a 1984 Chevy Chevette (you old guys know what I’m saying). Golden State has not only been better at putting the ball in the basket, but even the minor details of the game. The Warriors have retrieved countless loose balls and tapped out several offensive rebounds allowing Golden State another opportunity to make open shots. It’s almost surreal to watch.

In both games, the Cavs have looked spent in the 2nd half. They can’t keep up with the ball movement as the Warriors constantly have the defending champs on the run. Cleveland has tried running the shooters off the three-point line, but can’t come over to help quick enough to stop the drivers from getting to the basket.

My initial prediction was way off, so I’m going to make another one. Of course, I can do that, it’s my blog. Cleveland may win a game at home, but this series is has little drama left in it. The gap between these two teams is clearly evident.

One thing that gets lost in all of this offense by Golden State is the way it plays defense. The Warriors really make it hard on the Cavs role players to get anything going. See Tristan Thompson (8 points/8 rebounds in 2 games). Outside of James, Irving, and Love, nary a Cavs player has reached double figures in scoring. The “Big 3″ have scored 142 of Cleveland’s 204 points (70%). Not a great recipe for success.

Golden State’s role players haven’t scored much more, but have impacted the game significantly in other ways in comparison to Cleveland’s. Golden State’s “Big 3″ of Curry, Durant, and Thompson have scored 159 of the Warriors 245 points (65%), which included a six-point game in Game 1 from Thompson.

People keep reminding us that Cleveland hasn’t played well yet, but I would kindly argue that Golden State is yet to play its best game either. That’s scary!

If Cleveland’s role players don’t pick up some of the scoring slack and start getting involved in making winning plays, the Cavs have very little chance. Another thing that would help immensely, would be for the Cavs to slow down the pace. Ty Lue’s boys can’t play at that pace or they will get run out of the gym yet again. What Cleveland fans should be holding onto is my initial prediction was hot garbage, so maybe I just swung momentum with my latest soap box.
