No he is right this ship above is damn dangerous and deadly. I'm walking around and straight feeling tired instead of getting worn out my arms are smaller and it was the rock who is getting smaller he's a real bodybuilder and at Comic Con I said This is insanity we're eating ourselves up and there's got to be some logic to it as to why he said the ships making us heavier and I had some people doing tests I have a digital scale or you can take a balance and put the weights on it and so I went home and I used to balance a perfectly balanced it and I put my supposed weight I was way above it and I tried to counterbalance it's like 20 to 30 pounds like he said and these weights are all made the same if they're older we tested him at home they're with him like 1/8 of a pound. So he says it's because of the cadmium and the layer of crap and some other stuff There's a lot of problems happening and he's got something he think is going on but really it's a ferry it was an oil tanker so it's different but this this is a similar mess. Going to bother us a lot and use Tommy F but I got real big and real tired in just a couple hours. And I was supposed to only appear for an hour now it said like two or three hours so I checked out and I said I have to go home and get the makeup off and they said good that's good and everything went great i've got pictures and stories they were enthralled and they said the distancing is good and it's true that's what he's like and it's what he's like in the game it came across but it's really cuz I was exhausted and I didn't feel like talking to people I'll tell you what this is how it goes people get real tired doing this stuff and there's something with it it said there's less air even inside there with the people breathing it and it's less air to begin with with the ship I started to get a little bit horrified and said we're not juiced up and we won't be and these max are juiced up and stuff they come up here and they get tired and the plants in trouble and the crap going out there is helping and he wants us to try and get more out a big huge plume and it's gonna grow it's gonna drop and grow and you just take the the there's that big huge ship that used to be a tow bone and you nail it and make a channel one pass is good they come in and come back in nice and it's enough to get in a lot of trouble. Someone would get in tons of trouble by doing it so he's used to being deprived of oxygen but it went up in a few notches here and he's bothered by it and we all are but he is aggravated more than normal there's a lot of things going on a lot of dumb questions and people are in trouble so now he's got this thing with so now he's got this thing with triscuits and a handful of mixed nuts or two a day and some pepto they said the triskids are not exactly the greatest but they're not evil. Certain ones are decent original so I got that and I tried it said it felt great I did it for a few days I get sick so you're supposed to get sick you're not healing for some reason this stuff oxygen needs and I think it's because it's like fresh wheat and it and it is cooked but it's not processed we think it's processed and I said oh great so it's bathed and I looked at it and said there's all sorts of stuff in here nutrients and I started eating them and I feel awesome these things are the best they have to protect it so I did this and it wasn't that bad but he says I'm on a movie thing so if I go to Comic Con he wants to see what it's like and he probably won't be able to go to this August 1 and there's other ones too coming up real soon I can coming up real soon I can go to and people will think that I'm him so I'm gonna go there in big and see what the reaction is. It's like his other persona and it's his name it's his other name not a persona and that name is Odin And the reaction is really people are astounded you can see him without makeup and it's very astounding and people say they found him and we looked on some paintings and sculptures and he's big this is nuts OK and he says it might be Dave's version I gotta tell you there's a way to tell no. So they wanna see him big to see what he looks like to try and place it we get that.

#BlackExcellence365 Spotlight: Aundre Larrow

Hey Tumblr! Our first #BlackExcellence365 Spotlight of 2020 is Aundre Larrow (@aundrelarrow), a Brooklyn-based visual artist whose work has been featured on Adobe, Walmart, Verizon, and more. We got a chance to talk to him about his favorite projects, including his @teenvogue​ series showcasing the lives of formerly incarcerated women.

Tell us about yourself. When did your passion for photography start?

My name is Aundre Larrow and I’m a black artist based in Brooklyn, New York hailing from South Florida. I’m a Jamaican immigrant, an only child, and a Triscuit lover.

I started taking photos on borrowed film cameras from friends until I turned 15 and my theater teacher gave me his old Minolta SRT 101 as a gift. After that I would use my money from working at Old Navy and whatever I could talk my mom into donating to buy film and get it processed at the Walgreens a mile walk away. The passion started when I realized I could freeze moments I held dear and capture them. I loved getting my film back. I loved sharing it; Making little yearbooks and giving them to friends. I still have some of those prints in my childhood room.

Your work tells many stories, primarily of Black bodies which some photographers find it difficult to capture. What inspired you to make your series about shooting against darker skin tones?

Whew, I don’t know what it is about the phrase Black bodies, but it always hits me hard. I read an article on Mic. And it got me thinking.

I thought back to this teachable moment I had after college. I was interning at the Gainesville Sun. The photo editor had tasked me with taking portraits of the high school athletes in the fall feature, but I didn’t use a hair light. When I came back with the images, he looked at me sideways like “what’re you doing?” We can’t tell where their hair stops. (To make matters worse, I had used a black backdrop.)

I later learned from trial and error, from assisting photographers like Coty Tarr, and from studying the work of folks like Michele Walker, Joshua Kissi. Street etiquette paved the way for me at bevel, TBH.

You recently did a story with Teen Vogue featuring formerly incarcerated women. How did that project impact you and the work you create?

Maaan. You don’t know yourself until you’re in a small room listening to women discuss how painful it is, not being able to see their kids for months and months. One woman explained to me that one parent had abused her, and the other was enraged that she reported it. These women built new identities for themselves while separated from everything they knew. These two quotes will always stick with me:

“When I got out, it wasn’t like a walk in the park or whatever. When you’re in penitentiary, there are certain hours of the morning that you have to stand up to be counted. So I would automatically wake up and stand up. Sometimes, I would get up and lock myself in the bathroom. I spent 18 years in a room with a toilet and a sink. This was the closest thing, you know, to feeling safe. Can’t nobody get to you. It wouldn’t be until my kids would start knocking like, ‘Hey, are you okay?’”

And: 

“Our struggle has been from the beginning of time. Like I said, we’re a nurturing species. This doesn’t go for just the Black mother or person. Everybody, every racial background, has their own struggle. But, I think we’ve been beaten, raped, and downtrodden for so long that our will to survive and save the world has become like our bank.

You might not be my son, but if I see you in trouble, I am going to help. If I see the police run up on you, I’m going to throw myself in front of you. If I can save somebody’s son, I am going to do it because that’s how we’ve been built.

We, you know, from the slave ships, we were the ones singing them love songs, belly to belly and all the feces and stuff. We held on and kept everyone together and told them, ‘I love you and just hold on ’cause we gon’ make it.’”

How do you embody the mission of #BlackExcellence365 in your everyday work?

Existing is a form of resistance, no?  No, but for real, excellence is something I can’t determine for myself. I simply try to embody the process of creation. 

How has Tumblr allowed you to showcase your work and connect with other Black creatives?

Tumblr has brought so so many Black creatives together. Just to name a few, @skinnywashere, @stewyiscool, and Tutes; Tumblr OGs telling the New York story for so many of us to follow along. That community will last forever. Those connections are unbreakable.

When I interviewed @lawrenceagyei he spoke so fondly of finding the work of Joshua Kissi and how it inspired him. It brought a smile to my face 

Tumblr gave me the ability to shoot Fashion Week and a platform to share the full story. It’s one of the best things about the platform. Photo stories pop because you decide the weight of each image. It’s easy to share, reshare and show BTS.

Trying to figure out Author’s notes is hard.... Sometimes I just don’t have anything pithy to say, or have too much to say and don’t know where to put it all.

Obviously I am an overthinker.

So, for the sake of everyone reading: Let’s cut to the Shoutouts!

Special mentions to: @zommbiebro bc I miss you and hope you’re okay. @nekohuntslight for being the OG person to message me about liking the story (yes, Bael, this is the dirty secret behind why I thought you lived in Australia when we first started talking.... shhhhhh). And alllllll the binge readers who blow up my inbox every day, Iloveyousomuchyoudon’tunderstand. Very much adore all of you, you have no idea how serious I am being right now. I need to go through and make one post just screaming all your names to the universe.

Tyche brought drinks and snacks from my kitchen before flopping on the couch in my quarters. The guys were at work, along with Antoine, but my office was closed down for the day. “How are you feeling about tomorrow?” she asked.

“Vati and Hannah have everything planned to the smallest detail,” I shrugged. “They’ve already coordinated with Xio and Evan for all the crowd control and monitoring shifts, and the murals are going up today.”

She rolled her eyes. “I’m well aware of the logistics stuff. I literally handle all the staffing for the humans on the Ark, and Antoine was also part of the crowd control conversations.”

“Then why did you ask?” I laughed, grabbing a cracker and carefully stacking cheese and other toppings on it. 

Before I could get it to my mouth, she snatched it and held it out of my reach. “Because I’m asking how you feel. You’re only attending as… well, an attendee. No monitoring, no calling the shots, no working from the floor.”

She surrendered my cracker, but I found myself setting it down, appetite gone. “I’m okay - “

“Lie.” There was suddenly a finger levelled between my eyes like a gun. Just as quickly, it was lowered, and my sister was tilting her head at me. “Come on. You know you can’t lie to me - I’ve known you longer than literally anyone on this ship except yourself.”

“Fine! It’s weird!” I admitted in frustration, standing to pace and shoving my hands through my hair. “My skin is crawling with anxiety, my hands are twitching to snatch up the files and nitpick everything to the smallest detail….”

“Except they locked you out.”

“Except they locked me out, yeah. But I’m pretty sure I could get Derek to let me in, which is why I’ve made a point to tell him not to, no matter how much I ask.” Dropping my hands, I sighed. “But if I ever want to leave this position, I have to let them do this.”

She shrugged and stole my cracker, this time chewing and swallowing before she responded. “You could have kept some involvement in it, you know.”

“Pfft, yeah right. I would have taken it over, and you know that.”

“Yep.”

“Then why even ask.” I dropped back down on the couch.

“‘Cause you needed to hear yourself say it,” she explained, nonchalant as ever, snagging an olive and watching me calmly.

I sat in silence, processing it.  I hated when she outsmarted me like that, especially when she was right. “Can I at least eat first?”

She laughed and let it go, telling me how well the murals for the Festival were coming.  I hadn’t even gotten to - allowed myself - to see the designs, and the more Tyche talked about them, the more I wanted to see them.  By the time I finished my share of our snack, I decided to check out the progress.

We finally made our way to the decks where the Festival would take place, and I thought Tyche was going to die laughing at the way I gaped. The alcoves where the vendors would stage looked the same on first glance, but a closer look revealed very subtle shapes added that would give them a more savage, wild look in the right lighting. Metal sconces had been added to hold what looked like torches, but with special light emitters to simulate open flame. As we walked further, swirls of color revealed themselves slowly, first in light, curling tendrils, but slowly sharpening and taking on a more angular shape, twisting together into phantasmal images that vanished as soon as you tried to focus on them.

“It’s like walking through a garden, or a rainforest, but when I turn my head, I’m in a city.”

“Right?” she laughed as we came around the final corner. 

At this point, we were surrounded by this mural.  Just up ahead, there was a messy head of black hair tied back with a green piece of cloth. Bare feet and arms show smears of paint, and overalls covered a tank top - that, or the cloth for the hair had formerly been sleeves, I couldn’t tell.  One hand propped up on hips while the other hung down, holding a very familiar paint pen.

“Christ on a triscuit, Vati, this is incredible,”  I gasped softly.

She turned and smirked at me over her shoulder. “Not yet, but it will be when I finish.”

“I mean, all of it. The sconces…”

“Those were Hannah and Ivan.” Parvati walked over and touched one with her finger tip, stroking it gently.

Tyche made an impressed noise. “I’m only a little shocked that he had enough time.”

“The materials are on loan from the engineering departments, and we wanted them to be rather rough in the finishing. It helped. Sophia, no matter how curious you are, please do not lick the walls.”

A giggle bubbled up through my chest. “The thought never crossed my mind. I was trying to put together all the flavor profiles here. It’s… a lot.”

“Forgive me if I focused more on color than how the walls would taste. I don’t generally cook, remember.”

I stared down a swirl of pomegranate, popcorn, and gochujang. The colors - blue, pink, and yellow, respectively - worked well together, but the thought of the flavors made my stomach churn. “I solemnly swear not to lick the walls,” I promised. “How much of this are you expecting to still be up by the third night?”

“We have a team that will specifically come touch up the mural in specific places the morning before the second day.”

Tyche turned toward me and away from her study of the art. “Also, you would be surprised how much paint is on the walls. It will take a lot for Else to eat it all, once they are allowed in the area.”

“Before you ask,” Parvati cut me off. “We just asked them nicely. Well, Sam and Derek did.  They’ve become quite the ersatz diplomats to Else.” 

“Anything left?”

“Hannah is putting the final touches on the curtains for the alcoves and the seating areas. She’ll have a team installing them tonight once I finish.”

It was clever, and explained why she was only touching up part of the mural halfway between now and the closing of the event. “You two have really put your stamp on it.”

“Feel better?” She held one hand up gesturing at the entire entire project, eyebrow arched  to show me that she hadn’t been fooled for a moment.

I rubbed my neck, and glanced at her from underneath my eyelashes. “Busted, I guess.”

“That would imply that anyone had believed your charade,” she smirked.

Taking a deep breath, I looked around us again. “I honestly do. I could never have done all this. Holding on would have…”

“Kept you in a position you frankly hate,” Parvati interrupted gracefully. “It’s the same reason Sebastian went back to the Undine. He’s passionate about it, and it shows in the quality of his work.” When I gaped in insult, she held up a hand. “Not everyone can succeed through fear of failing and a determination that things be done right if they must be done at all.”

“Everyone talking about me needing to retire, like I’m old or something,” I joked, throwing my hands into the air.  “Physically, I’m only thirty-five.”

Tyche nodded to concede my point. “What about the food? I haven’t seen a menu come out yet.”

The change in topic made Parvati’s face collapse. “What? It should have gone out yesterday…” She flicked open her datapad, which flickered from the overspray that covered it. Frantically scrolling, she groaned. “This was scheduled, why didn’t it send?”

“Did you check the date?” I asked calmly. “Specifically the year.”

“Three times, it’s scheduled for tomorrow,” she insisted. “Right here: May seventeenth, twenty-forty aw fuck….”

“At least you got the decade right,” I pointed out. “You wouldn’t believe how many scheduled emails I’ve tried to automatically send out for ten or fifteen years ago.”

She nodded and seemed to get her bearings back. “So, protocol for this is… just send it right now and apologize for the late notification, don’t try to make excuses or explain?”

“Exactly. They won’t care why, they’ll just be excited the list is out.”

With a couple quick gestures, she sent the email and dismissed her datapad. “Okay, that was the last thing, then.” Turning back toward the wall she was working on before, she waved to us over her shoulder. “I’m not trying to be rude, but I really do need to finish this up. Thank you for coming to see everything… it was oddly reassuring to have both of you give us your stamp of approval before the Festival instead of making us wait until after.”

“For the record, you two have always had my stamp of approval, or I wouldn’t have tried so hard to keep my nose out of it.” I knew she couldn’t see me, but I still smiled. “We’ll catch up with you after the Food Festival.  Remember: both of you need to plan on taking the day off afterwards. I’m serious.  Have your unofficial advisors drop in and chat about everything, that’s fine. But no actual work, and I won’t let either of you see the survey results until the second day after. So rest.”

“Got it, boss lady. Have a good night!”

Tyche and I turned and headed back to my quarters. We remained silent as we took in all the preparations that had been done, waving to the handful of vendors who were bringing their supplies in already. Once we were back in normal corridors, the silence broke almost immediately.

“I think they’ve got this,” Tyche suggested nonchalantly.

“Oh, I know they do.”

okaay so, i don't know why i'm pouring these into ur asks and i'm very sorry if you get annoyed by this and you definitely can delete this, but uhh i just realized that entering dc fandom actually cause me more harm than good?

i feel everyone is so demanding, i feel like 'you have to stan ...., if you don't, you're ....' or 'you have to ship ...., if you don't, you're .....'

now i know you probably will think 'stop listen to other people, do what you want :)' but welp my anxiety causing me the need to explain everything because of how demanding this fandom is ...

every other fandom i entered is not demanding as dc fandom? it's so scary that i just realized this one year after i joined the fandom ....

the thing is, i do stan almost everyone, hell, i'm a multishipper (this do not include ped* and inc*st ship) but i hate the needing to explain this bcs if i don't explain it i will get judged, just because i focused/talking more about this specific character & ship

don’t worry, you’re not annoying! and i know exactly how you feel. the only other fandom other than dc that i’ve been part of was voltron and we all know how that went, so i had no clue that other fandoms just...aren’t like that? the other day i was scrolling through the danny phantom tag because i’ve been watching the show lately and i found almost no discourse? the only discourse was with the show creator and that was it and i had no idea that fandoms could be polite like that.

(it’s ironic, really. dc stans spend all day ridiculing the writers for not writing everything perfect, and then they go and do the same thing to fancreators on this site.)

anyway, you’re completely valid and i agree that people in this fandom need to tone it down and start thinking before they speak. stop nitpicking details that don’t matter. let people ship what they want. if someone likes/doesn’t like a character that you have a different opinion on, keep your mouth shut because it literally Does Not Matter At All. it doesn’t. so everyone please shut up and let people enjoy things or i will drop down your chimney tonight and sprinkle triscuit crumbs all over your bed.

Hey ya’ll if i spearheaded a Nino Zine who would be down to contribute?

Looking to start another big project and i’ve got a stable reputation for putting things out so you know if i started it it would happen. (Have released 4 large scale fandom projects and all of them released on time!) Looking to get a vague sense of who is game to contribute, would be art and stories of anything and everything to do with The Lad ™

Ships, AUs, comics, hero stuff, family stuff, etc. theme would just be some representation for an underrated character with Nino as the focus. I remember that being a problem with some zines in other fandoms i’ve been in lol

Trips with family? Passions, funny moments, falling in love, saving the day, being #DONE with magic? anything you want. 

Since summers coming up/is here i could be lenient on time and would hammer out start and completion date if i get a good chunk of interest. All folks who have participated in my projects before please consider, but i would love a batch of new faces too!
