13 days to Jai-ho around Southern India
I finally made it to India! JAI-HO!
Finally? Yes, because I’ve always had it in the back of my mind and have always wanted to go. But I always ended up deprioritizing it because I went to other places instead. Then when August rolled around, and my clients actually asked me to join them in Bangalore, India at the end of September for workshops and of course I was more than willing to go. At the same time, I actually had some vacation days requested during the end of September because it was my birthday weekend and I wanted to meet up with my friend from Canada in England.
But it was a clear choice – India for my birthday? Hell yeah!
I was excited and nervous at the same time because Antti wasn’t able to join me during the trip, so I knew I would be going by myself – a lone female traveller. And everyone’s heard the stories about India and how it’s unsafe for women there. I have travelled by myself plenty of times, but those were always to places that were safe for lone female travelers. But why would I waste such a good opportunity? The company would be paying partially for the trip anyways and I had two full weekends so of course I wasn’t going to let that travel opportunity go to waste.
So I booked my flight through the company portal (since it was work related) for September 27th until October 9th and then got started on the itinerary.
However, I wasn’t able to really plan my trip to India until I got back from China at the beginning of September. Once I got back, I only had a few days to plan. My main port of entry and exit is Bangalore because of work. In the end, after checking what is around Bangalore, I came up with the following itinerary:
Sept 27 Frankfurt to Bangalore
Sept 28 Bangalore Night bus from Bangalore to Hampi
Sept 29 Hampi Night bus from Hampi to Bangalore
Sept 30 Bangalore – shopping
Oct 1 Bangalore – had some appointments
Oct 2 Bangalore (work)
Oct 3 Bangalore (work)
Oct 4 Bangalore (work)
Oct 5 Bangalore (work)Night bus from Bangalore to Madurai
Oct 6 Madurai Bus from Madurai to Chennai
Oct 7 Chennai
Oct 8 Chennai Evening flight from Chennai to Bangalore
Oct 9 Bangalore to Frankfurt
I actually also got a coworker/friend living in Bangalore to check my itinerary before I finalized it to see if it was doable or not. He confirmed that it was doable and so I was ready to book all my tickets. But no, I did not have the best itinerary – I would have changed quite a few things if I were to plan it again. Instead of spending 2 days in Chennai, I would have only spent one day there and squeezed in Pondicherry and/or Mahabalipuram. In addition, instead of so many days in Bangalore, I would have added a day trip to Mysore during one of my non-work days (especially since it was Dasara, which was a big thing there).
(PS – when I got back on Oct 9, I went straight to work so that I didn’t have to take an additional day off; I’ll say, as long as my body is able to, I will take advantage of being young and resilient to jet lag).
Therefore, if I were to revise my itinerary, it would be the following:
Sept 27 Frankfurt to Bangalore
Sept 28 Bangalore Night bus from Bangalore to Hampi
Sept 29 Hampi Night bus from Hampi to Mysore
Sept 30 Mysore
Oct 1 Morning bus from Mysore to Bangalore
Oct 2 Bangalore (work)
Oct 3 Bangalore (work)
Oct 4 Bangalore (work)
Oct 5 Bangalore (work) Night bus from Bangalore to Madurai
Oct 6 MaduraiBus from Madurai to Pondicherry
Oct 7 Pondicherry Pondicherry to Chennai
Oct 8 Chennai Evening flight from Chennai to Bangalore
Oct 9 Bangalore to Frankfurt
Still, it was a decent itinerary for my first trip to India! It allowed me enough time to get used to my surroundings and see things rather than rush through everything without knowing how things work. But I truly believe that I would have managed the revised schedule easily as well.
Exciting thing is though that I’m already dreaming of when to go next and the additional places I would visit in India.

So these were the top 5 famous routes that you can pick from according to your nearby cities if you are planning a road trip with your friends or family. Now the most important question that many wonder about while deciding for the road trip is if one should take their own car or rent a car?
