BOTD: Trinidad Piping Guan
Photo: William Stephens
"Large, turkey-like bird found only in the forests of northern Trinidad. It is black with white patches on the wings and crown, a light blue face, and an azure dewlap (flap of bare skin) that dangles from its throat. It is usually seen high in the trees, but on rare occasions can descend to the ground. Locally known as 'pawi', this impressive bird is highly endangered due to hunting, and is regularly seen in only a few places, such as near the town of Grand Riviere."

Holy crap-a-moly the Trinidad Piping Guan is a dinosaur! So cool. I would say Broadwing.

I remember that this bird exists and I need to tell you guys about it
(All pictures are from here)
Everyone, meet the pawi
Also known as the Trinidad Piping guan, or Pipile pipile, this bird is a member of the chachalaca, guan and curassow family, meaning that it's closely related to one of two national birds; the Rufous vented chachalaca, or cocrico.
These guys are found in the northern parts of Trinidad, and is endemic to Trinidad, meaning that they're only found there. They are a turkey like birds, mainly black with white wing patches and light blue head, with a bright blue dewlap and red feet. They're pretty large, having a wingspan of 60 cm and a body length of 60 cm too.
They're found in forests, and unlike what you probably assumed, they live in trees; rarely touching the ground. They make whistling noises too, and their wings make a "whirring" sound! They eat berries, flowers, leaves and fruits. Their nests are made in trees. They also lay three white eggs, which are pretty large. Only the female birds incubate the eggs.
Sadly, they are critically endangered, with some estimates states that there might be only 70 to 200 birds in the wild. This is mainly due to illegal hunting, and to aid lesser extent, Habitat loss.

Pipile is a genus of guans - specifically, the Piping Guans! These birds are very closely related to the genus Aburria, but for now we’re keeping them separate. The Piping Guans probably originated in eastern Bolivia, sometime around 4 million years ago, in the Zanclean age of the Pliocene of the Neogene. It probably started out in the Andes mountains, somewhere in the foothills of Bolivia, and they probably had an extinction event during the Late Pliocene due to brackish lagoon habitats spreading and then receding, destroying their available habitats and majorly affecting their evolution.

The Black-Fronted Piping Guan, P. jacutinga, is an endangered Piping Guan from the forests of south-easter Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay. Increasingly rare due to habitat destruction, it’s also the only Piping Guan in its range. Large birds, they get up to 74 centimeters in length, and they have small heads, slim necks, and large bodies. They are mainly black, with white streaks on their wings and a white crest on its head, as well as a little red throat wattle.

The Red-Throated Piping Guan, P. cujubi, is a nonthreatened species essentially identical to its cousin, but with more of a throat wattle and fewer white patches on the wings. It lives in the tropical lowland forests of Bolivia and Brazil.

The Trinidad Piping Guan, P. pipile, is a critically endangered species of Guan from only the island of Trinidad. Large, about 60 centimeters in length, and generally resembling a turkey in appearance, it is mainly found in trees and feeding on fruit and flowers and leaves. They have thin necks and small heads, with black feathers and blue skin on their heads, as well as white feathers on their wings. They build their nests in trees, which only the female incubates. Only known from the Northern Forest ranges of Trinidad, it is threatened mainly by illegal hunting, as well as some habitat destruction. Sightings of it are increasingly rare.

P. cumanensis, the Blue-Throated Piping Guan, is a non threatened species from Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and Peru, as well as possibly northern Bolivia. I tlives mainly in lowland forests as well as those around river habitats. It usually can reach about 69 centimeters in length and, like other Piping Guans, it has a long thin neck and a tiny head. This gives it very weird, almost nonavian proportions and general appearance. Making piping calls during the breeding season, in addition to rattling wings, it allows for the name that all the members of this genus share. Other than the mating season, however, it’s silent. They also are in groups mainly in the breeding season, where they walk together by hopping through the forest canopy.

ENDEMICS FROM TRINIDAD & TOBAGO
This nation of 2 islands, have 2 endemic species of birds.
The easy one, found in both islands (Trinidad & Tobago), is the Trinidad Motmot.
Since I arrived to Asa Wright NC, I just heard the motmot, but today (25 Feb 2017), I have the great luck to see a pair of this endemic species.
The other species of endemic is the Trinidad Piping Guan, but that means a long day, and perhaps no sight.
Enjoy these pictures of the motmot!!
More Trinidad birds to come!!

Trinidad Piping Guan (Pipile pipile)
Also known as the common piping guan, the Trinidad piping guan is a critically endangered species of guan found only on the island of Trinidad in the Lesser Antilles. Like other guans the Trinidad piping guan is primarily arboreal and feeds almost exclusively on fruit and berries. They are usually active at dusk and will forage in groups of 3-5 individuals. The Trinidad piping guan is currently listed as critically endangered and are nearing extinction with only 200 individuals left.
