TO PLANT their flower and vegetable gardens, African American women used their hands—darkly creviced or smoothly freckled; their arms—some wiry, others muscled; and their shoulders and backs—one broad and another thin. They dropped small seeds into the soil with their veined hands. They wrapped their arms around freshly cut flowers to decorate tables in their homes. They bent their shoulders and backs to compost hay, manure, and field stubble, and transplanted plants from the woods into their own yards. These women developed a unique set of perspectives on the environment by way of the gardens they grew as slaves and then as freedwomen.
They continued these practices and exercised these perspectives into the early twentieth century. Rural African American women then joined these traditional ways of gardening with horticultural practices they learned from Home Demonstration Service agents and from the special programs developed in African American schools in the South.
An examination of these traditions and practices of gardening changes the reading scholars have had of African American participation in Progressive-era agricultural reform and also reveals the outlines of a rural African American environmental perspective at the time. Progressives envisioned national agricultural reforms that subjugated the discrete and nuanced expertise of local actors to models of bureaucratic efficiency and skill. Yet African American women developed an expertise from community knowledge, from their own interpretations of agricultural reforms, and from the training they received in horticulture in the Cooperative Extension Service, African American schools and other places. Progressive era scholars have missed the critical role of African American women gardeners in Progressive reform efforts, or at least have not viewed the participation of African Americans in these efforts through the critical lens of gender.2
These women cultivated with simple tools, a hoe, trowel, or shovel in one hand and seeds or fertilizer in the other hand. But they gardened within a gendered and racial milieu that gave the application of these simple instruments of skill a complex social potency. Rural African American women and men often supported one another in complementary roles and with strategies that were designed to support the family unit. Some women met their own and sometimes their family’s needs by harvesting vegetables for meals, and by planting shrubs and cultivating flowers to create more appealing homes.
The value of the women’s contributions to household productivity was often invisible to Progressive reformers, who practiced enormous condescension in their efforts to uplift the poor. African American reformers shared this condescension, making women special objects of disdain. Thomas Monroe Campbell, an agent for the Negro Cooperative Service, was haughtily dismissive of rural women, characterizing them as “too careless as to the loud manner in which they act in the streets and in public places ... and unduly familiar with men.”
But ultimately, African American women in the rural South controlled how and where they gardened, and by implication, why they gardened. They drew upon rich traditions of gardening knowledge and took what they would from Home Demonstration Work and the education programs of African American schools. This article explores this relationship between African American gardening and Progressive reform, but also asks how African American women cultivated their own gardens. Were African American women’s gardens expressions of self-interest or community experience and values, or both? Did the women blend community and Progressive influences in the gardens they made and used? How did the gardening practices of African American women in the early twentieth century rural South add up to an environmental ethic?3

THE AFRICAN AMERICAN GARDEN
AFRICAN AMERICAN and Euro-American gardens also possessed distinctive characteristics much like the roles of African American men and women. Though Vera Norwood argues that women of both groups were “responsible for designing and maintaining the yard and its ornamental garden” according to gender, ethnicity was as important as gender in shaping the unique gardens of African Americans. These featured flowers, shrubs, trees, and plants that were purchased individually, accepted as gifts, or cultivated from cuttings. African Americans created colorful motifs from gifts and cast-offs. Euro-Americans could more readily buy several plants and group and organize them.
African Americans relied on an oral tradition, unlike Euro-Americans whose expertise came from magazines and books. African American traditions were so ingrained that plants presented as gifts were associated with the giver.7African American women manipulated and controlled their yards for multiple functions in slavery and then in freedom. Free range in which livestock could roam, or a pen, an extended kitchen from the house, cleaning and leisure spaces, swept areas, and pathways to the fields, woods, the slaveholder’s house, and fenced flower and vegetable gardens comprised overlapping spaces in the yard. Each function, each space was often fluid with little or no boundaries.
Unlike most slaves, renters and owner-operators had some income and could purchase livestock, including chickens and hogs that were given free range of the yard. The women sought the shade and protection of trees from the sun and heat to prepare meals, feed and entertain family and friends, scrape pots, scrub dishes, wipe tables, beat rugs, and launder clothing. Children played and adults sought recreation throughout the yard, particularly in the shade. Outside the green spaces, women carefully swept clean any foliage, including weeds, creating a bare and austere yard.
The pathways took the women beyond their homes and yards to the environs of the woods, fields, the big house, neighbors, and town.8 In these gardens, African American women planted vegetables, fruit, flowers, shrubs, trees, and plants in red clay, sandy, and dark loamy soils. They generally cultivated vegetable gardens on a side or to the back of the cabin for easy access. To keep out livestock, their partners probably built enclosures of tied stakes for gardens—less expensive than free range. Most women grew vegetable gardens primarily to sustain their families.
[...]
They planted okra, milo, eggplant, collards, watermelon, white yam, peas, tomatoes, beans, squash, red peppers, onions, cabbage, potatoes and sweet potatoes. Others planted truck gardens and sold corn, cotton, peanuts, sweet potatoes, tobacco, indigo, watermelons, and gourds at the market for profit. African Americans also displayed flowers for everyone’s viewing and pleasure, beckoning neighbors to take a closer look or visitors to chat in the yard’s fragrance and color.
The women looked out upon exquisite flowers including petunias, buttercups, verbenas, day lilies, cannas, chrysanthemums, iris, and phlox planted in the ground, old tires, bottles, planters, and tubs. They placed shrubs—roses, azaleas, altheas, forsythia, crepe myrtle, spirea, camellias, nandina, and wild honeysuckle—throughout the yard. Azaleas and roses were most commonly planted. The dogwood, oak, chestnut, pine, red maple, black locust, sassafras, hickory, willow, cottonwood, and redbud dotted the landscape. They chose ornamental plants that were self-propagating, along with annuals that were generally self-seeding.
Colorful combinations of blues, reds, pinks, oranges, whites, and yellow often clashed with little or no sequencing. Placement was generally informal, where the gardeners could find space. A mix of color and placement resulted in a lack of symmetry and formal design. African Americans, including the women, simply could not afford to buy several shrubs, plants or flowers at the same time to create such symmetry.9 Women’s roles were transformed from slavery to sharecropping. Jacqueline Jones observes that African American men reinforced gender roles by hunting and fishing during slavery. Men were primarily responsible for cultivating the tiny household garden plots allotted to families by the slaveholder.
They practiced conservation, tilling their own vegetable plots when time off from the slaveholder’s tasks allowed. Dating back to the antebellum period, slaves used organic farm methods such as composting, when they took or were given the opportunity to grow their own gardens. A Louisiana slave gardener also built birdhouses from hollowed gourds to attract nesting birds that protected vegetables from insects and other pests. The birdhouses, a modern fixture in suburban backyards, provided shelter for the birds that served as a natural pest control.
[...]
GARDENING IN AFRICAN AMERICAN SCHOOLS:
African American schools offered several options to their students including model yards and classes with practical and aesthetic applications. The school trained students on school grounds by cultivating model yards for teaching and profit. The model yards featured traditional elements found in a rural African American culture, including gardens, livestock, and laundering. Schools like Tuskegee and Hampton Institute also offered home economics classes, which included gardening training for women, and an agricultural curriculum for men. Most significantly, African American women teachers taught other women to cultivate aesthetically pleasing gardens.
Some applied their training to teach at secondary schools. In 1937, the African American Elizabeth City State Normal Summer School in North Carolina offered a class in housing titled, “The Rural Community Background and Rural School Organization and Management,” which emphasized home and yard aesthetics in the curriculum, and suggested “ways and means of making rural life more attractive and joyous to those who live in the open country.” Students sketched “attractive lawns and backyards and [gave]suggestions of what native shrubbery to use and when to transplant it” in this class.
They created images of nature in their art and searched the woods for plants to dig up, carry home, and replant.27 Progressive influences continued at Hampton which offered to African American women courses with aesthetics in mind, ranging from “Flower Arrangement” to “Landscape Design” in the “Curriculum for the Division of Agriculture.” These courses nurtured creativity through symmetry and beauty. Hampton also offered “Flower Arrangement” and “Flower Growing for Amateurs”— classes focusing on aesthetics and scientific housekeeping already practiced in the community and Home Demonstration.
In the flower arranging class, teachers taught “the fascinating art of flower arrangement [that] provides a medium of expression universal in appeal. Students in all divisions of the Institute will find value in learning to utilize plant materials in home, store, school, or office decoration.” Instructors demonstrated “the necessary methods involved in knowing and growing ornamental plants commonly used about the home can well be learned with study and practice” in “Flower Growing.” As teachers, Home Demonstration agents, or homemakers, women applied scientific housekeeping to gardening.28Hampton also offered classes in advanced gardening.
Teachers there taught “Ornamental Horticulture,” a course general enough in scope for the layperson and the horticulturist. Students, both men and women, learned to arrange and enhance “the homes and grounds and larger properties in order to make them more useful as well as attractive” while “growing and caring for trees, shrubs, and flowers as a commercial enterprise or as a hobby.” One of the courses, "Landscape Design of Small Properties,” was more advanced than basic flower planting and arranging, and taught vegetable gardening with an emphasis on aesthetics: “Landscaping one’s own home or school grounds is an economy and a pleasure as well as an art.
Teachers, community workers, and home owners alike will find it much to their advantage to be able to improve their surroundings in their respective communities.” In the “Landscape Gardening” class, students learned “the practical methods of beautifying grounds around the buildings, the construction of wind breaks, placing ornamental flower beds, laying out walks, planting trees and shrubs, arranging and planting window boxes.” Once again,African Americans had the opportunity to layer Progressive horticultural education upon community experiences.29

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Maintaining Tourist Sites During COVID-19

A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Maintaining Tourist Sites During COVID-19
Under normal circumstances, spring is the time when the country’s many zoos, aquariums and botanical gardens come alive with activity after a long, cold winter. However, this year has been anything but ordinary. Over the course of the last couple of months, the nation has watched as these popular travel destinations as well as museums and historical sites have closed to visitors in an attempt to help curb the spread of COVID-19. But while these attractions may have been (or in many states, still are) off limits to the general public, essential workers have been showing up daily to take care of animals, plants and artifacts amidst their closures.
However, it’s not just the workers who are feeling the affects of the pandemic, but the animals, too. Zoos worldwide report that there have been noticeable shifts in the animals’ behavior. In some cases, the animals are craving more human interaction, which they normally receive when these facilities are bustling with visitors. Giraffes at the Houston Zoo, for instance, are used to visitors feeding them lettuce, and the chimpanzees at the Maryland Zoo are normally hand fed but due to social distancing procedures are receiving scatter feedings instead.
Zookeepers, animal trainers, horticulturalist and other essential employees across the United States have had to maintain a sense of normalcy to keep things running smoothly behind-the-scenes. Whether that means working longer, more sporadic hours or taking on new duties, these caretakers’ roles have shifted in the wake of COVID-19, sometimes in interesting and creative ways.
These staff members have had the unique opportunity to witness changes at their places of work that are the immediate result of closures. Colleen Kinzley has been living onsite at the Oakland Zoo in California for nearly 25 years, but it’s only been in the past few weeks that she’s witnessed a shift in animal activity at what has been her home for much of her career. As vice president of animal care conservation and research, she’s responsible for leading a team of zookeepers in caring for the animals, particularly the zoo’s resident herd of three African elephants, whose quarters are within close proximity to her own. If one of the animals should need immediate assistance at night, either she or the other onsite manager springs to action. But because there haven’t been large crowds of people visiting the zoo, she’s noticed animals from the adjacent Joseph Knowland State Arboretum and Park, a nearly 500-acre green space, starting to roam the zoo.
Colleen Kinzley (left), vice president of animal care conservation and research at the Oakland Zoo, works with a mountain lion rescued from the wild.
(Courtesy Oakland Zoo)
“I walk to and from work each day, and lately I’ve been seeing more deer and turkey during that time,” Kinzley says. “I’ve seen a couple of deer strolling through the elephant exhibit. We also have some frogs living in the [Wayne and Gladys Valley Children’s Zoo] that are usually silent, but now they’re deafening. It’s been interesting seeing wildlife take over where people have left off.”
While Kinzley’s animal encounters are something that the public will not likely get to experience once the zoo reopens and the crowds return, at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, animal care staff have lifted the veil of what goes on behind-the-scenes by putting some of their resident animals in the limelight. In March, trainers filmed the aquarium’s colony of Rockhopper penguins as they went on a “field trip” through the building’s beluga whale exhibit. The video quickly went viral. However, one thing a lot of people may not realize is that these roughly 30-minute jaunts are a regular occurrence for the penguins once the crowds have left the building.
youtube
“Sometimes we’ll walk them into the offices upstairs, or during slower times we’ll take them through the exhibits when the building is less crowded,” says Steven Aibel, senior director of animal behavior and training. “We want our animals to be flexible and used to closed and open buildings. In the wild, animals are meant to be flexible and adaptive, so we’re parlaying that into their current environment by making things variable and each day new.”
Aibel says that the viral video’s international acclaim was a fluke and the result of one of the trainers who wanted to capture the moment to share with family, friends and colleagues.
“Little did we know that the world would be interested,” he says. “We thought it was cool and fun, and the experience shows the positive affect animals can have, especially right now when people are looking for hope these days.”
This hope is proving especially important as these essential employees are not only trying to keep operations running smoothly, but also striving to educate the public, which during normal times is a crucial part of their day-to-day work.
“The biggest change for us while we’re closed is that we’re not doing any public-facing programs,” Aibel says. “Normally, each morning we come in and prepare for ways to engage with guests by doing presentations, meet and greets, and animal encounters. These things are very purposeful to the welfare of the animals, since it gives them activities and stretches their brains. Because these exercises are no longer supplied through daily programming, we’ve had to figure out ways to still do these elements, such as taking them on walks through the aquarium.”
In institutions where there are no animals to care for, essential workers have had a little more leeway in how creative they can get while still engaging with audiences. At the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, Tim Tiller, the museum’s head of security and resident cowboy, has become the unofficial social media spokesman for the museum. For the past couple of months, Tiller has been working with the marketing team by hijacking the museum’s Twitter feed (@ncwhm) with his viral #HashtagTheCowboy posts. In his tweets, Tiller highlights some of the high jinks he’s gotten into as one of the sole staff members on site, like modeling items sold in the gift shop and interacting with the exhibits, including a stint in the museum’s jail. He’s also been answering fans’ questions like, “How often did cowboys take a bath?” and “What’s the proper way to tie a wild rag or bandana?”
Thanks for the mug tips, folks. Checked the Brodkin gallery. Nothing. Whoever is behind this is very sneaky! You can telegraph me any more tips to Prosperity Junction. Or use our hashtag. Whichever is easier for you. #HashtagTheCowboy Thanks, Tim pic.twitter.com/W6RrI5hF72
— Nat’l Cowboy Museum (@ncwhm) May 22, 2020
“We were hoping to gain a few new audience members, but had no expectations that they would be from all over the world,” Tiller says. “People are telling us that the posts have helped them through their day, and thank us for the positivity during this tough time.”
Seth Spillman, the museum’s chief marketing officer, and his team are the ones responsible for recruiting Tiller in the first place.
“Tim is an authentic voice for our institution and has been a real sport with all of this,” he says. “We’re getting feedback from people from all over the world who have said that they’ve never been to our state and museum, but now they can’t wait to come and visit us when we reopen.”
Another popular tourist destination that has been finding new ways to engage with the public is the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. When it closed on March 15, the organization was quick to keep the garden’s many fans actively involved by posting photos and videos of its popular Orchid Show, which was already in full bloom and, during normal circumstances, one of the first signs of spring for many New Yorkers. Over the years, the NYBG has served as a beacon of hope and popular respite for city dwellers.
“After 9/11, people enjoyed having access to the garden, since they saw it as a place that’s fundamentally peaceful and where they could bask in the benevolence of peace and beauty,” says Todd Forrest, the Arthur Ross Vice President for Horticulture and Living Collections at the NYBG. “People need that now more than ever, and it’s frustrating that we’re not able to provide that since we’re closed. We’re anxious for people to come back.”
Todd Forrest, Arthur Ross Vice President for Horticulture and Living Collections, spoke during a media preview of an exhibition in June 2019 at the New York Botanical Garden.
(Don Emmert/AFP via Getty Images)
However, there is some hope that, slowly but surely, things are beginning to go back to (more or less) normal at the gardens. Forrest says that during the first few weeks of its closure, only a small number of horticulturists were onsite, but every week more employees are returning to work to help out by watering and planting flowers, mowing the expansive lawns and transplanting plants in anticipation of summer’s first visitors.
“Right now the cherry trees, gardenias, and daffodils are all in bloom,” he says. “It’s stunningly beautiful, but haunting because the crowds aren’t here to enjoy it.”
Some day, perhaps sooner rather than later, these popular attractions will once again be alive with activity. But until then, at least we can find solace in knowing that these important destinations are right there, waiting for us to return.

Goodbye New Zealand!
And just like that, it’s done. My 4 months in New Zealand have come to a close. Three weeks in Thailand await, and then back home. Feels both like it’s been ages and like it’s been only a second, but I think that’s just how these things go.
After Howard and Sandra’s, I rolled around the vastly remote East Cape, and popped up to the Coromandel for a quick soak at Hot Water Beach and a lovely stroll down to Cathedral Cove. If I remember correctly, last time we were at Hot Water Beach, it was quite chilly outside of the water, and we didn’t have a shovel to dig a hole so we just used our feet to get in as we could. Toasty warm feet, quite chilly bodies. But a fun experience with the very hot water just a few inches below the sand (I’ve loved all the ways I’ve experienced NZ’s geothermal activity).
I then headed up to Northland, where I wwoofed for 5 days in Whangarei. Pretty cool that my uncle Joby was here many years ago! This was my first wwoofing with other people, and it was fun to have the social group of the 4 other girls while we worked and when we were off having fun. 2 from Germany, 1 from Singapore, and 1 from France. This was also the first time I was really doing organic farming. Nye, the host, runs a vegetable farm called Starlight Organics, about a 25 minute drive outside of Whangarei city. I dived right into the work, starting at 4:30 for the Saturday farmer’s market after a Friday evening arrival. Energy was always high at the house, the work varied (harvesting, weeding, stacking firewood, transplanting banana trees, and digging clay), and the company entertaining. Nye took us all sorts of cool local spots. We hiked a mountain, saw glass blowing and other art galleries, walked to a giant Kauri tree, and saw a two man show touring from Northern UK that’s a modern twist on the Greek legend of Orpheus and Eurydice involving a Bruce Springsteen sing-a-long (was actually quite a cool piece of theater). We cooked together every day, played many games of cards, and had a good time.
When I left Nye’s, I headed up further North, enjoying the coastline and small fishing towns, eventually ending up in Kaitaia, homebase for my next day’s bus exploration. I took a tour to 90 mile beach and Cape Reinga lighthouse. Pretty cool to have been at the most southern point of the country a few months ago, and now at the tippy top north. My driver was a local who shared all kinds of stories as we drove the area, pointing out the bridge where he used to fish with his dad, and the campground him and his siblings would hang out at every summer. It was nice to be driven for once, and be able to sit back and fully enjoy the sights and the cool histories, personal and otherwise, that the driver shared. Turns out 90 mile beach is actually only 55 miles long, but named so by European explorer Abel Tasman who thought that the average horse walks 30 miles in a day so the three days it took by horse must mean 90 miles. Cape Reinga is a stunning lookout over the water, and you can see the place where the Tasman sea meets the Pacific Ocean. It’s also the spot where Maori believe souls depart from, moving on fully to the afterlife.
I am now back in Auckland, and have been for about 6 days. I successfully sold my car, despite showing up to the car fair woefully unprepared, being the only car quite caked in dirt. I also had dinner with one of my friends who I worked with at the hostel in Dunedin. So, so good to see her again and catch up on all that’d been happening. I am now finishing up the last bits and pieces of preparing to head off to Thailand. Flight departs at 6 am, so an early morning for me. It was cheaper to come back to Auckland and stick with my original departure ticket rather than leaving right from Bangkok, which means I am able to leave unneccessary items here, like tent, sleeping bag, winter coat (100 degrees and humid in my future). Also means I’m not bringing my computer, so may be a bit until next blog post. You can always check out instagram or send an email where I may be more active.
All in all, I am really glad I took this trip. New Zealand has been great to me in many ways. I’m proud of myself for taking this leap and sticking it out when things were challenging. I’m grateful for all the people and animals and landscapes who brightened my days and shared stories with me and helped add to the experiences of this trip. I’m excited to know that while travelling solo may not always be my first preference, I’m totally okay doing it again if I want to go somewhere, and I know now that it opens up doors I wouldn’t think to open if I was with someone else. And I’m also really eager to fully enjoy Thailand (ready for a cultural change, and super amped for the food), and looking forward to coming home. Love to you back home.

Atlantiss interviews Kenya Cocopeat Entrepreneur
Enterprising Kenyan Entrepreneur, James Kapombe upcycles coconut waste into valuable grow medium for farmers. 9 questions, 9 answers. He will share his journey, some tips and his future plans.
1. Share with us a brief background about yourself and your town in Kenya.
I believe being born and raised in rural Kilifi, Kenya gave me the passion for agriculture. I started with a smart farm concept to demonstrate sustainable climate smart agri-techniques but I pivoted my business model towards Cocopeat Manufacturing after identifying the pressing needs in the market.
2. What is your passion or drive to run this cocopeat manufacturing business? Was it opportunity driven or you wanted to contribute back to your towns/economy of Kenya?
I saw a gap in the market that was not being met/addressed. 99% of cocopeat was/is imported. I see this as a high potential business opportunity (including the creation of value added local jobs) for Kenya and the region.
3. Describe your jumpstart journey to embark on this business, especially on identifying, operating and maintaining the machines for your cocopeat manufacturing. Especially industrial machines may be high in capital investment and maintenance costs are unknown.
We started working on this project in August 2016, seeing how it is today, is a huge step forward. Shipping in the machinery to Kenya was very expensive and we opted to engage local engineers to develop the plant for us. It was a painful experience, because they took 5 months to deliver. In this industry, we have to be mindful that maintenance costs can sky-rocket if you use inefficient machines.
4. Who are your primary and secondary customers of cocopeat?
CocoGrow's cocopeat is mainly used by flower and vegetable growers for plant propagation. Other uses include industrial oil absorbent, mushroom substrate, pet houses, etc.
5. So, what's the benefits of cocopeat to your targeted customers? Give us your favourite pitch.
Today, one kg of tomato seeds costs more than one kg of gold. We value seeds. A seedling is the income of tomorrow. At CocoGrow, we maximise germination rate, reduce young plant mortality and ensure zero root shock during transplanting!
6. Share with us 1 or 2 tips on engaging your customers on using cocopeat. How tough was it in the beginning?
Exhibiting at the International Flower and Trade Expo (IFTEX 2018) in June before our business launch in July 2018 gave us a wider access to the market needs.
7. What major challenges and hurdles you face/faced? And how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was sorting out a faulty machine. We had to work around low production cycles and delays delivery time. And these are costs to CocoGrow. We need to pick up the skills and knowledge to run the machines. As we scale up the business, we recognized that the ability to supply in volumes also comes with huge working capital and physical space. Proximity to [consistent] raw materials becomes more important.
8. What are your next big plans/steps? What support and business development would you be looking for?
We have three areas to focus on: (1) Product Development, (2) Distribution Channels and (3) R&D and Machinery.
On the product front, we are currently working on various downstream products as we need to make our business sustainable and be competitive in the global market. As we scale our business, we hope to ship out to as many small-scale farmers across Africa, at cost-competitive freight rates. We also recognize the importance of Technology as we hope to work with more horticulture experts to assist us in R&D and to inject capital to upgrade our machinery.
9. Please share with us your parting, encouragement statement, to other coconut families in rural villages who may wish to embark on this journey.
Coconut is the tree of life. Everything is valuable on that tree, the tree with zero wastage. You can’t afford to be poor.

A Pittsburgher Undertaking Native Tree, Shrub, and Forest Restoration on a Small Budget
Our guest blogger notes that he has no formal training in gardening or botany which perhaps makes this an even more inspiring story. In the past two years this one individual (with the help of a friend) has planted 1,500 native trees and shrubs as well as numerous native forbs on about 15 acres of his own property and that of willing neighbors. His goal is to attract pollinators such as native songbirds, butterflies, moths, and other insects. His plans include planting at least 500 more native trees and shrubs each upcoming year. We invited him to share his experience, written in his own words, on this ambitious endeavor as part of a blog series inspired by our new exhibition We are Nature: Living in the Anthropocene.
Motivation
My parents taught me bird watching starting from my preteens. I finally saw my first pileated woodpecker (Brookgreen Gardens, South Carolina) at age 14. Canoeing through the Okefenokee swamp in southern Georgia/northern Florida in the spring, we would see brilliant yellow/orange-ish prothonotary warblers flitting some 20 feet away among the knees of towering cypress trees and also the flocks of honking sandhill cranes overhead. One of my daughter’s middle names is Dendroica for the warblers. The other daughter is named after the tallest tree species (if I am pressed, I am not sure if it is for giganteum or sempervirens; my father calls her “little twig”). And my son is named after the last name of the most famous modern biologist. This project for me is about giving back. I am no expert about what I am contributing here. I welcome corrections and comments. The other motivation is that this project is doable with not much money, and anyone could do this. If you do not have the land, find a willing neighbor/friend who does, and start planting natives and removing invasive plants on their property.
Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania
Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania are marvelous ecological areas and the birth areas of noted environmentalists such as Rachel Carson and Edward Abbey. We get plenty of rain, even in the summer, which means we do not have the droughts observed in other parts of the country. Western Pennsylvania is riddled with creeks, which are ample places to plant native trees and shrubs that will never have to be watered as the creek riparian zone will take care of them. We also have clay soil (I know I will swear about the slate rocks when digging holes with a posthole digger by hand), which holds moisture and minerals. Lots of things can grow here. Because of topography, there are many places where houses cannot be built, so there is ample space for native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers.
Pittsburgh National Park
We can think of Pittsburgh as “Pittsburgh National Park,” and the city already supports a huge biomass of bird populations such as the thousands and thousands of crows wintering here each year. If we would just plant lots and lots of flowering trees such as the dogwoods and redbuds and hawthorns and shrubs such as northern bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica), we could increase the habitat to attract more beautiful songbirds such as rose-breasted grosbeaks, cedar waxwings and scarlet tanagers to spend more of their time here. I grew up in the Piedmont area of North Carolina, and every spring we would be greeted with the explosions of the dogwoods and redbuds that are endemic in the woods. The same could be done here with our hillsides that are refractory to building houses but not to populating them with dogwoods, redbuds, serviceberries, and hawthorns.
Growing native plants in large clusters
I am no expert on native plants and have consulted with many people as well as just Googled information. Somewhere I had read of a research study in which the authors determined that the planting of 250 wild flowers of one species was necessary to get another butterfly species to appear. A guiding principle is to identify multiple high wildlife value specimens, and then plant lots and lots of each of those species. (I should note that most wildlife management principles state that diversity is better than lots of one species; in my case I am promoting clusters of diversity). If we all wanted to purchase watermelons, but the markets would only keep a few in stock, we would eventually stop making plans to go to a market with the purpose to get a watermelon. And if a bird encounters not one serviceberry tree, but instead a forest of 300 serviceberry trees, we may instead have enticed a flock of these birds. For example, I have observed a flock of cedar waxwings rushing back and forth among a cluster of black cherry trees to eat the fruit. A solitary tree would get less activity. With sufficient establishment of native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, we may entice birds to nest in the area. The Powdermill Nature Reserve (part of Carnegie Museum of Natural History) Bird Banding project has documented the precipitous decline of songbirds, with some declines as much as 70 percent over the last 50 years. We can repopulate our yards and our woods and our cliffs along the rivers and highways with native species that will restore habitats and help stabilize the populations of the songbirds that are left and perhaps even help grow them.
Early in this project I was fortunate to get a state of Pennsylvania biologist on the phone, and he emphasized that I should concentrate on plant species that use lots of water as these species will generate lots of biomass. With the drainage creek behind by house, I am inspired to plant along its sides every step of its 1000 feet. I am on 2 acres plus. I also have multiple agreeable neighbors on similar or larger acreages, and all these neighbors have acres of woods that they leave alone and have allowed me to remove the invasive trees, shrubs, and grasses and plant the hundreds of native trees, shrubs, and forbs. I am inspired by the biologist at Indiana University who mowed an old overgrown field in Bald Eagle State Park to set back succession to an earlier stage of growth. The mowing was done in wide strips so that as those areas grew back they could mow additional areas. In the following spring he was able to observe several pairs of nesting golden winged warblers, a songbird species that has had a precipice decline in the last 50 years. While I do not expect such spectacular success, one can use the Allegheny County population data from eBird to gauge which songbird species we may be able to attract to nest in the area. In the woods behind my house, I have seen wood thrushes and hooded warblers sporadically each year. Perhaps the growing of a smorgasbord of native trees, shrubs, and forbs will entice them to lengthen their stays.
Bambi
One white tailed deer consumes 200 pounds of leaves and twig matter each month, roughly a ton per year. Typically, when one sees one Bambi, there are another 4 browsing within 50 feet, which is the equivalent of 5 tons of leaf and twig destruction each year. As a gardener, I think of Bambi as rats with long legs. While Bambi has evolved to eat everything, they have yet to develop a taste to eat galvanized steel. For this reason, metal cages are used to protect any plant at risk for Bambi. We have made metal cages from half inch mesh hardware cloth, chicken wire and 16 gauge welded wire fencing. Cages range from 1 foot high to 2 foot high, to 3 foot high to 6 foot high with diameters of 6 inches (18 inch linear fencing made into a cylinder) and 8 inches (24 inch linear fencing made into a cylinder). I am not planning to remove the cages. If I had more funds, the cages would be typically 8 feet tall and 2 to 3 feet in diameter as is done at the Pittsburgh Botanical Gardens as well as at Nine Mile Run in Frick Park.
507 trees and shrubs planted in November 2017
In November 2017, we planted
100 northern bayberry (Myrica pensylvanica) seedlings, one to two feet in lengths (www.coldstreamfarm.net)
100 Norway spruce (although it is not a native, Norway spruce is recommended by the Penn State Extension, and I hope to someday attract crossbills which also fly over to Norway) four-year transplants, 12-15 inches in height with 12-15 inch long roots (Mussers Nursery, Indiana County, PA)
100 red-twig dogwood (Cornus sericea; www.coldstreamfarm.net) two to three foot in length seedlings
102 two to three foot long pagoda dogwood stakes (Cornus alternifolia; www.wholesalenurseryco.com/product/pagoda-dogwood-stakes/)
100 eastern white pine four-year transplants, 12-15 inches in height with 12-15 inch long roots from Mussers
5 black willows from Mussers
Soon after planting, 4 inch by 6 inch rectangles of paper were folded over and then stapled in place over the terminal buds of the white pines to protect them from winter browsing by the deer
In spring 2017, I got 300 six-year eastern white pine transplants (Mussers Nursery) that had roots of 2 feet in length. It took me multiple weekends and after work hours that spring to manually posthole the holes for these six-year transplants. Rotting in the basement while waiting to be planted, at least 100 trees did not survive the planting process/the summer.
I learned my lesson. I purchased a gas-powered auger with a 6-inch diameter by 30 inch long bit from Home Depot online. The 6-inch bit is much easier to dig with than the 8-inch bit. My volunteer and I and the gas-powered auger were able to dig over 100 30-inch deep, 6-inch diameter holes in just a couple of hours. This time we got four-year white pine transplants with only 15-inch length roots and planted them the same day we picked them up. The eastern white pines will grow to 100 feet and the spruce trees should grow to 50 to 75 feet. It is like planting an ‘instant forest’. Half inch mesh two-foot hardware cloth cut into two foot sections to prepare cylindrical cages were used to protect the red-twig dogwood seedlings. Each cage was buried about 4 to 6 inches to prevent deer and weather from knocking over the cage. I purchased 4 rolls of 100 feet by 6 feet of 14 gauge welded wire fence (Deacero Steel Field Fence 6 ft. H x 100 ft. L (7745)) from Ace Hardware, and what with shipping cost a total of about $500. We made 50 cages from each roll using tin-snips. 102 cages were used for the planting of the pagoda dogwood cuttings. About 12 inches of these 6 foot cages were submerged into the hole to prevent deer and weather from knocking them over. Native dogwoods other than the common flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) were chosen because of the flowering dogwood’s predilection for Anthracnose, a fungal infection that can make the tree look ugly and potentially die. The pagoda dogwoods were planted in moist soils, and the tall cages should protect them from the deer and allow the dogwood to eventually achieve 20 foot heights.
The costs for planting in November 2017 The 100 spruce, 100 white pine and 5 black willows from Mussers cost $341 plus the cost of gas driving to pick them up. The 100 red-twig dogwood ($146 plus shipping) and the northern bayberry ($172 shipping included) were from Cold Stream Farm. The 102 pagoda dogwood stakes shipped from a Tennessee wholesale nursery were $187. The 200 foot of 2 foot hardware cloth to make the 100 cages for the red-twig dogwoods was about $140. And the pagoda dogwood cages cost about $250.
So the cost of planting 507 trees and shrubs was about $1250 or about $2.50 total per plant which overall is economical. Labor is considered to be voluntary and is not included in these calculations. On the other hand, I am still living in my old unfixed house with my ancient toilets of which one takes 20 seconds to flush and is relegated only to flushing liquids. In 2015 when I got the house, I had repair insurance for the first year though I was unable to convince a plumber that a toilet that took 20 seconds to flush needed to be replaced under that home repair insurance plan. My skimping on fixing my old house allows me the funds to plant a forest that will live for ages.
Invasive plant garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) removal With garlic mustard, I like to pull the first years of this biennial plant whereas others suggest pulling the second year flowers and leaving them to dry and die and decompose. Rosettes are hand pulled and can be left to dry out and die. First year plants including the entire root can be pulled after rains that softened up the grounds. The removed plants are placed in the crooks of tree branches to allow the garlic mustard to dry out and die and decompose.
Example future project: American woodcock project One section of the woods is fairly open with a couple of acres of privet with moist soil and the idea is to replace the privet with alder (300 alder seedlings can be purchased from Mussers Nursery for $150 total) to improve the area to possibly attract woodcock so that the birds have space for their mating dances and space to look for earthworms. We have a heavy duty hand weedy-shrub pulling device (Pullerbear) which can be used to pull invasive shrubs such as privet, multiflora rose, and Japanese barberry out of the ground.
Some sources of information on the web
Landscaping for Birds - A go to website from Cornell Ornithology. I use this website to help decide which classes of trees and shrubs to plant in mass.
Beechwood Farms - Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania. Beechwood Farms has an excellent native plant nursery.
eBird - (dates and populations and locations) of birds in Allegheny County from ebird.
PSU Extension Lawn Alternatives - One of many excellent sites from Penn State Extension.
Garden Planner Dripworks - Where I get my drip irrigation supplies.
Prairie Moon - This is where I purchase about a hundred-dollars of native forbs and shrub seeds each January.
Howard Nursery - Inexpensive trees and shrubs that can be ordered each January through early March from Howard Nursery. Presently have been getting grey dogwood and smooth alder seedlings from them. Recommended to order in January as soon as the website opens as they run out.
Musser Forests - Mussers Tree Nursery. Being only about a 75-minute drive from Pittsburgh.
Cold Stream - Cold Stream Farm wholesale nursery. Relatively inexpensive source for northern bayberry, dogwood shrubs, buttonbush seedlings and more.
Audubon Native Plants - Audubon native plants database. For each plant, there is a listing of which native birds are attracted.
Wildflower - Wildflower database
This blog series depicts Pittsburghers and their commitment to improving the local environment to celebrate our new exhibition, We are Nature: Living in the Anthropocene. Saudi Arabia Fruit Concentrate Market to Witness Steady Growth till 2026 | TechSci Research
Growth of the food & beverage industry and rise in the preference of preventive healthcare is expected to drive the demand for Saudi Arabia Fruit Concentrate market in the forecast period.
According to TechSci Research report, “Saudi Arabia Fruit Concentrate Market By Fruit Type (Citrus fruits, Red Fruits and Berries, Tropical Fruits and Others) By Product Type (Liquid, Powder and Others) By Application (Beverage, Bakery, Confectionery, Dairy, Others) By Region, Company Forecast & Opportunities, 2026”, the Saudi Arabia Fruit Concentrate market is expected to witness steady growth in the next five years. The Saudi government-imposed taxes on the purchase of energy and carbonated drinks which benefitted the growth of the Fruit Concentrate market. Fruit colorants are available at a cheaper price and can substitute sugar in different food items such as cake, chocolates, and juices and act as natural sweeteners. Fruit Concentrate has no sugar, no colorant, artificial sweetener, or caffeine which is the major reason for its high demand in Saudi Arabia.
The high demand for nutritious food items and beverages with a high concentration of Fruit Concentrate is expected to witness significant growth in the next five years. The growing geriatric population in the country is increasing the demand for pure juices with no added sugar which is expected to fuel the growth of the Fruit Concentrate market. Regulatory changes imposed by the leading authorities in the declaration of synthetic colorants have impacted the sales of synthetic food items and beverages as the government announced the food colorants containing food items and beverages have to contain on-pack labeling or warning statement which in turn is fostering the growth of the Fruit Concentrate market in the next five years. Market players started replacing the synthetic colorants with natural ones thereby boosting the market growth. Market players are introducing several flavors of juices with attractive packaging to attract consumers to buy their products.
The COVID-19 outbreak across the world which has been declared as a pandemic by World Health Organization has affected several countries adversely. Leading authorities of Saudi Arabia imposed lockdown restrictions and released a set of precautionary measures to contain the spread of novel coronavirus. Due to the strict restrictions, the manufacturing units were temporarily shut down which impacted the volume production of the Fruit Concentrate. The shortage of the workforce was observed owing to the movement of the workforce to their native places impacted the market growth during this period. Also, the disruption in the supply chain led to the shortage of raw materials and in the distribution of the end products. Therefore, the COVID-19 period put a negative impact on the growth of the Fruit Concentrate market.
However, the adverse effect of the large amount of consumption of fructose present in the fruits may hamper the Fruit Concentrate market growth in the forecast period.

'Techie' leaves job to plant papaya
#PHnews: 'Techie' leaves job to plant papaya
LAOAG CITY – Oliver Cariaga Millet, 46, of Barangay Nangalisan here has never been happier seeing his papaya plantation burst with fruits while pickers join him with excitement, taking photos here and there.
Sprawled on a less than one hectare lot, Millet's Nangalisan Papaya Farm is being frequented by loyal customers as it is just near the highway when going to the city proper. Other farmers likewise visit him to exchange good agricultural practices from land preparation to selecting good seeds and most importantly, not using harmful chemicals.
For 19 years or from 1995 to 2014, Millet was employed at the provincial government of Ilocos Norte as a computer programming expert. But when his now six-year-old youngest daughter Orivell was born with down syndrome, he decided to become her personal caretaker while his wife, who is also a provincial government employee, continued working
While taking care of Orie (Orivell's nickname), Millet became engrossed in planting papaya and eventually harvested fruits, to his utmost excitement.
Papaya, he said, has become his family's favorite fruit.
“It all started as a hobby but when I saw a papaya producer’s success in YouTube, I was inspired to venture into papaya farming,” he told the Philippine News Agency during a visit to his farm.
Today, Millet calls himself a "papayayo" or papaya grower and farm caretaker, with an 8,800-square meter farm lot that he rents. He said his agricultural venture gives him joy and self-fulfillment in life.
He maintains more or less 600 papaya trees which are on fruiting stage. Others are in plastic mulch and about to bear fruit. Some are on seedbeds being prepared for transplanting in order to have a steady supply all year round.
Other farmers and plant hobbyists also buy seedlings from him for added income.
As one of the largest papaya producers in the province today, Millet said he sells his pesticide-free papaya harvest to the public and private hospitals, public markets, government offices as well as the Ilocos empanada vendors in Laoag and Batac who regularly buy from him at a farm gate price of PHP25 per kilo.
During this time of coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, the former technology geek said he came to realize that sustainable farming is the new norm and the main secret to success in this endeavor is loving what one does and to share it with abundance.
At his Nangalisan Papaya Farm which is just a stone throw away from his residence, loyal customers and traders reach out to him as he produces the best varieties — sweet, virus-resistant and sturdy as a result of good agricultural practices.
When visiting his farm, be ready when he says, “pick at your own risk” with a smile. (PNA)
