Imagine that Sturmhond reveals himself as Prince Nikolai Lantsov, but you couldn't accept it
Disclaimer:
This oneshot is purely based on the Netflix series, so some of the lore might be incorrect
y/n is a female Grisha
Angst/Fluff
"Captain, are you sure that the Saint is stable enough to cross the fold?" y/n approached the captain's table and crossed her arms before him. The Volkvolny was beginning to rumble from the calling of the Fold, and as a Materialki, you weren't really fond of how the wooden planks of the ship you had invented with your Captain begun to stir.
"Y/n, how many times have I asked you to address me by Sturmhond?" The blonde and blue-eyed privateer snickered at you, leaning back against his cushioned chair and crossing his legs. You remained silent and only had a concerned look crossing your features. "Come on, then. Call me by my name then I shall answer you," he added and began beckoning you toward him.
"Alright... Sturmhond. Now answer me," you rolled your eyes. "You know how terrified I am of the Fold. If I get caught by one of the Volcra in there, I'll be demanding that you pay for my health insurance even if I'm dead,".
"I would expect no less from you," he pulled a soft smile at your direction, which almost warmed your heart - almost. You shook your head as he stood up from his chair and stood next to you.
"It'll be alright, y/n. Alina's strong enough with her amplifier. You'll be safe, I can promise you that," he muttered, casting a soft smile at you before he climbed the stairs to the upper deck.
"No doubt he's about to show off the Hummingbird," you rolled your eyes and tailed him.
Before you knew it, you were suddenly up in the air and reaching the entrance of the Fold. You looked up at the abyssal storm, growling and calling before your very eyes. Quickly turning around, you saw that only a few of the Volkvolny crew, including yourself and your captain; the Saint herself and her lover were aboard the Hummingbird.
Alina Starkov looked back at the Fold with a determined glare, while Mal's eyes were clouded with his usual protectiveness. Before you could turn to look at Sturmhond, he had already crossed the ship's deck and stood by your side, linking your arms tightly with his.
"It's going to be alright. You don't have to be scared," he mumbled in a low voice, almost to himself. You could hear the slight tremble in his voice, and you knew you weren't alone in this consuming fear - he felt the same way too.
"Sturmhond," you turned your wrists so your palms could capture his. "I trust you," you nodded once before turning back at the starless sky as darkness consumed your surrounding.
Both of you gasped, but held each other tight. The Fold was pitch black and cold - colder than the sea breeze at night. Your mind suddenly travelled to what you could do as a Grisha. You were just a Materialki - a person who could manipulate earth and steel - but, what use is that when it comes to something as powerful as the darkness?
Suddenly, a blinding white light filled your eyes and it came from the Saint.
Sturmhond's blue eyes filled with marvel and wonder, and your heart ached to see them as you realised that he could never look at you the same way he looked at Alina's beautiful sunlight. You pursed your lips and slowly attempted to loosen your grip of his hand, but it won't move a muscle.
You closed your eyes and hoped that this would end soon.
As no light could pierce your eyelids, you thought that the worst is over, but only found that Alina was gasping for air and could not summon the sunlight anymore. Mal rushed to her side to protect her from the Darkness of the Fold, while Sturmhond quickly removed your hands from his and grabbed his pistol.
You rushed to the front of the Hummingbird and placed your hands on the engine of the ship, forcing the gears to work harder so everyone could get out of the Fold quickly. Some of the crew members screamt as they were grabbed by the Volcra and fell to their death.
You panicked as one of the Volcra almost snatched you into the air, but you had quickly picked up a crowbar and shifted it into a sword before slicing it into half.
"Now, that's my lady!" Sturmhond shouted from across the deck as he continued shooting the beasts. You rolled your eyes and with your last effort, you pushed the engines to their limit before they gave out one last revolution and ceased their turning.
And all of you were so close to getting out of the Fold.
"Brace! Brace for impact!" You shouted loud enough for everyone to hear as you shut your eyes hard and focused your abilities to the front of the ship, bending the round-edged wood to become sharp-edged, so that as they land on the ground, it would pierce the dirt and lessen the damage on the Hummingbird. Sturmhond wasn't going to let it go if she had let his precious invention turn into ruin.
The ship dug into the dirt of East Ravka and slid across the grass. Everyone let out a whelp as their knees collapsed from the impact. You exhaled a large breath and wiped a sweat from your forehead. It was definitely hard to use the small sciences without looking at what you're about to change.
Tamar and Tolya were the first to cheer, while Sturmhond quickly ran over to you.
"Are you alright? You seemed to be doing a lot of work there," he spoke - and for the first time, it seemed like it was out of concern.
"Yeah, and it's all because I had to save your damn ship from falling to pieces," you groaned at him, which only received a long chuckle from him.
Out of the blue, everyone heard the marching of more than a legion of soldiers.
"What's going on?" You muttered to yourself, but your eyes held Sturmhond's.
He avoided them and only shook his head.
"Identify yourself!" The captain of the soldier commanded. The Sun Summoner seemed clearly irritated while Sturmhond grasped her shoulder with his one arm and gave it a gentle squeeze.
"I'll handle this," he said and he began to undress himself off his long, ridiculous privateer coat and he seemed to behaving a conversation with the captain. You parted your lips to ask him "Wouldn't you end up naked?", but you quickly took your words back when your eyes perceived Sturmhond wearing a green uniform gilded in golden embroidery, a uniform almost similar to those Ravkan soldiers, but it carried a higher air of command.
"It can't be," the man named Ravski gasped.
"Yes, it is," Sturmhond responded. You unbuckled your knees to get a better view of what was happening.
"Moi Tsarevich," Ravski began to kneel. "My prince,".
You gasped, while Mal and Alina passed each other confused looks.
"I present Nikolai Lantsov, Major of the 22nd Regiment, Soldier of the King's Army, Grand Duke of Udova, and Second Son to his Most Royal Majesty - King Pyotr the Third - Ruler of the Double Eagle Throne!" The captain announced with a spirited voice, while Sturmhond - now Nikolai pulled a smug look across his face.
You couldn't believe your eyes that the man in which you had spent years with was in fact, the estranged Prince of Ravka himself. Your lips quivered as memories came flooding back to you, but you knew that you couldn't cause a scene.
The prince had already been enjoying himself too much.
~•~
Everyone had reached the Stronghold (or moreso like a base) where Grisha who opposed against the Darkling and survivors of East Ravka remained. You spotted Zoya, someone who had always taught you the meaning of hard life back at the Little Palace - greeting Alina Starkov like old friends.
You clenched your fists and held back your tears. Once again, you were a stranger to everyone around you. The only person that you could become yourself was now gone too.
"One week," you took a deep breath in your personal quarters, which was very much far away from Alina and Nikolai's - given your status as a Materialki Grisha. Even Tolya and Tamar's rooms were closer to the Prince's. "Hold on for one week and we shall see," you swallowed the fear in your throat.
Your y/e/c shifted to your modest bed and you laid yourself there - hoping that your memories won't haunt you at night. Everyone was in a meeting to discuss their next move against the Darkling, but you weren't included - as expected.
That night, you recalled the memories from a time long forgotten of you, your brothers and sisters which were called upon to the Little Palace and serve as the Second Army for the Tsar. You shared their excitement when all of you had found out that you were Grisha. Your twin sisters were prodigal Heartrenders like Tamar and Tolya, while your eldest brother was an Inferni and your younger brother was a Squaller. Everyone was suited for battle and talented - but not you.
You were just a plain Materialki - a Durast who was weak and could not bend swords or bullets quickly enough to save your life. And so, you were never ordered to Battle like your siblings since even the Darkling did not acknowledge your abilities.
One day, the Tsar ordered his princes to enter and cross the Fold for a diplomatic mission on west Ravka. Something happened when they were on their way back, and they had to kill as much Volcra as possible along with only a few of the Second Army Soldiers escorting them - with the Heartrenders being your own two sisters and ome of the squallers your younger brother. Almost none survived, with the exception of his princes, as it seemed.
You and your eldest brother grieved their death, and sent many personal letters to both the Darkling and the King, requesting for the return of the bodies of your fallen siblings. However, both of them rejected your requests, giving an excuse that their main priority was to search for the Second Prince - none other than Nikolai Lantsov, instead of bringing their bodies home.
You and your brother were devastated, and he was suddenly being called upon to fight at the Fjerdan borders. You had tried your best to make an armor for him, in which no bullet should be able to pass through - and it worked - only if it hadn't been for the Fjerdans to cut off his head when your brother was wounded.
Distressed, you crossed the the Fold from East to West Ravka by yourself with an invention you had so carelessly made, as an effort to hopefully let the Saints decide your fate in the abyss. And you could have died, if your wounded self wasn't discovered by Sturmhond.
You woke up silently with your eyes brimming in tears. Your siblings' lack of proper burial, Sturmhond's deceit, and your uselessness as a Durast was all too much for you. The very thought of being under the roof of the man which had both killed and saved your life was something your heart could not handle anymore.
You had to leave.
Its not like anyone would realise nor dread your absence.
Wiping the silent and hot tears pouring out of your eyes, you began to pack some clean clothes into your knapsack, a pair of daggers, a map of Ravka, money, food and water. There wasn't much to pack anyway. You put on a cloak and blew out your candle before you opened your door.
"Captain-!" You exclaimed as the blonde and blue-eyed man which had been by your side for years suddenly showed up in front of you with his hands up, and hand balled into a fist, as if he wanted to knock on your door.
"Y/n, you're awake!" He gasped and pulled a cheesy smile. "I guess you've been around me for too long until you could sense me from far away, then?" He chuckled. Slowly observing his formal attire, it was obvious that he had just finished his meeting.
"You're incredibly loud with everything you do, that's how I know," You pursed your lips and forced a smile.
He nodded and began to peek around your pitch black room, past your shoulders. "Your quarters are very dark now, aren't they?" He commented.
"I was sleeping, Capta-I mean, uhm, moi Tsarevich," and you kept a distance away from him as you recalled that the man before you was ranks higher above yours.
"You were asleep with your travelling cloak?" He raised a playful brow.
"You shouldn't be here. Just go to sleep, my prince. You look tired after the meeting,".
"About that," the prince pushed your arm which was blocking the way into your room and lit a match. He searched for your candle for a second and lit it up. "I wanted to talk to you about what happened... earlier," he muttered and his bright eyes searched your room.
"There's nothing to talk about-,".
"Saints, why did they give you such an empty room? There's barely anything in here!" He jumped and began going through your old cupboard. You sighed and closed your eyes, not knowing how to properly deal with the man.
"My prince, you're no longer Sturmhond. Its improper for you to act in this manner. I beg of you, please remove yourself from my quarters," your heart was beginning to ache, but he was seemingly avoiding your words as he continued rambling around.
"The only thing here as stuffed as the king is your-," and his eyes paused at your knapsack. "Why is it packed, y/n? Where are you going?".
"Its none of your concern, my prince," You could not brave yourself to look into his eyes.
"Saints, just call me Nikolai, y/n,".
"How can I just call you Nikolai Lantsov when you've been my Captain and Sturmhond to me?" You snapped as irritation overwhelmed you.
"You don't understand, Nikolai - you're a prince. I'm just a deserter of the Second Army and we're not equals anymore,".
"Come on, you know that I don't think of you that way-,".
"Either way, you can't stop me from leaving," your voice trembled.
Nikolai suddenly crossed his arms and he passed a stern glare at you, a look you had rarely seen him equip himself with. In that moment, you realised that he truly was a Prince - not just any foolish prince like his brother, but a man of command, a man who you could have followed anywhere, even to the edge of the world - if it hadn't been for yourself.
"You can't leave. I forbid you," he stated with his sudden cold blue eyes fixed upon you.
"You have no right to give orders to me," You took a few steps toward him, almost challenging his command.
"You can't leave," Nikolai breathed, voice softening as he slowly closed the distance between the two of you.
"I have no place here - by your side, as a soldier in this war you've involved yourself with. I'm a lesser Durast compared to the ones you've got here-,".
"No one's ever said that to you," Nikolai's hand reached your arm, almost grasping it to not let you go.
"No one needed to say it. I couldn't save my brother because of it. What makes you think that I could save you when you need my help?" your face went hot as you realised how close the both of you were to each other. That panicked heartbeat of yours thundered against your chest and you were worried if he could hear it.
"We made our ship together, y/n. You helped me with my inventions, made it ours and saved me, countless of times during our raids-," he pulled a bittersweet smile as he recalled his days together with you as a privateer.
"Nikolai," your hand instinctively reached his cheek, and he leaned into your touch - blue eyes glowing with a desperate blaze. "Those days are now over. You're a Ravkan Prince and you must let go of things that do not matter anymore - like me,".
He took in a sharp breath and refused to look into your eyes for the first time.
It was true that you had to leave him because there was no chance that the both of you could live peacefully together, sailing away with hopes of building a family together - free from any danger. That was your dream, and not his. Nikolai had always been ambitious, despite his foolhardy efforts to make him appear the opposite.
When he remained silent, you passed by his shoulder and grabbed your knapsack. You crossed your room and to your door, before hesistating to reach for the doorknob. Turning back to him one last time, you stretched a soft and genuine smile of fond farewell to Nikolai.
"Farewell, moi Sobachka. If the Saints would allow it, we'll meet again," you muttered and closed the door behind you as you left.
Nikolai stared at the still door, breathless and heart aching. His heart was heavy, but he understood why you had to leave. With his final breath within your presence, he breathed:
"I love you,".

001 - THE GETAWAY CAR - “enchanted!”
Pairing: Edmund Pevensie x Wolfstar!Daughter!Reader
ENCHANTED MASTERLIST!
By no means do I support R*wling’s biased views! This profile is meant to be a safe space promoting escapism <3
TW: none ( although, please feel free to message me if you believe i missed some!! )
THE WEASLEYS’ FLYING CAR LET OUT A distant honk that broke the quiet of the woodland night. It drew your gaze off the several critters that chittered in annoyance as you set your sights on the sudden brightness from the other side of your window.
For two months—two months too long, Harry Potter had given you and everyone else no sign of life. He had yet to reply to any of the mountains of letters you, Ron, and Hermione had sent over the eight weeks that had passed.
That day at King’s Cross Station, he had asked everyone to keep in touch over the summer, that everyone (he not-so-subtly turned specifically to you, Hermione and Ron affirmed upon exchanging a silent gaze) remember to send their owls and exchange letters about everything and nothing at all. And that had been exactly what you did—that was the case for three of you, at least.
At first, golden boy’s silence had been, what you believed, was but a delay of Hedwig’s travel. Godric knows that poor owl would lack nutrition in a madhouse like the Dursleys. But as weeks, and eventually, months went by, all three of you had grown all the more concerned, eventually evoking this ingenious escapade.
“You have got to be joking!” you breathed, jaw slack in awe as you tugged your window open. “Please tell me at least one of you has a clue about what you’re doing. . .”
The redheads simply grinned, exchanging a humorous look between them, as though a joke had been told and you were the only one who lacked its context. Ron was leaning out of the back window of the old turquoise blue car, which was parked in midair.
“Stupid question,” he scoffed in amusement. “We wouldn’t be here if we didn’t, now would we?” His tone was almost incredulous as you stared at the three brothers, eyes blown wide and locks going a shade of bright blue and lilac.
The near-silent squeaks from the top of your head drew everyone’s attention to the little bowtruckle that had climbed from its original place on your shoulder. “Oh, ‘ello Bowie!”
The said creature only chittered angrily. Unlike your puffskein and that troublesome owl, Hermes, Bowie hadn’t been as pleased with the thought of sharing you. Having been present from when you were but a babe wrapped in blankets and to this day, stood in a sweater and trousers before the open windowsill, he has grown in your company and become an extension of you; leaving your side for Hogwarts had not been a choice, as he snuck into your pockets, just as he had every time you left the cottage.
“I was under the impression that we’d be flying there—”
“Exactly what we’re doing—” The twin sat in the driver’s seat (you believed it to be Fred) interjected dumbly.
“I meant on our brooms, you idiots!”
To that, they exchanged a baffled glance. To think they wondered how you’d known about their illegal flying contraption.
“Never you mind,” Ron shook his head, “Now come on! We’re burning moonlight!”
You only gazed at them for a moment more. It was an astonishing, and admittedly impressive sight. Without a thought of self-preservation, you climbed aboard the flying contraption, not a care in the world for the ground that promised great risk fifteen feet below you.
As the car took off and you glanced to where your father stood, waving you goodbye, you couldn’t help but fear that this would be the last you would see such a sight. While you trusted your friends deeply, you hadn’t a clue if your life was truly all that safe in their fumbling hands.
“You wouldn’t happen to have some form of insurance, would you?” you gazed at Ron’s elder twin brothers, who grinned at you from over their shoulders. “And what the bloody hell is that supposed to be, little Miss Mood Ring?”
To that, you could only sigh, gazing down with pursed lips as Bowie moved to hide within your sweater’s pocket.
This was going to be a particularly long night.
Time passed rather quickly for the four Gryffindors, blanketed from Muggle eyes by the car’s invisibility feature.
Meanwhile, at number four, Privet Drive, Harry Potter dreamed he was on show, in a zoo, with a card reading ‘UNDERAGE WIZARD’ attached to his cage. People goggled through the bars at him as he lay, starving and weak, on a bed of straw. He saw Dobby, the house elf from earlier in the crowd, and shouted out, asking for help, but Dobby called, “Harry Potter is safer there, sir!” and vanished. Then, he saw you, effortlessly pretty with your bowtruckle atop your head as always, gliding through the crowd unbothered, clueless of his struggle. He wanted to call out to you, beg for you to save him, when the Dursleys appeared and Dudley rattled the bars of the cage, mocking his pleas.
“Stop it,” Harry muttered as the rattling pounded in his sore head. “Leave me alone. . . cut it out. . . Please. . .” your name spilled his lips as he muttered in his sleep.
Suddenly, he opened his eyes. Moonlight was shining through the bars on his window. And someone—rather, a pair of familiar faces were giggling through the bars at him: a freckle-faced, red-haired, long-nosed someone alongside the very face he had subconsciously conjured and yearned to see again.
Ron Weasley and [Y/N] Black-Lupin were outside Harry’s window.

Rocking to pay the dues
"We were scanning the cities, rocking to pay the dues. But besides of the glamor, all we got was bruised." - Ghost
Vash and Wolfwood find a moment's rest in their hotel room, though peace may not be in store for one of them...
Based off of a prompt list I found on Twitter (if I ever find the post again, I'll link it properly)
Prompt was #69: "If you interrupt me one more time, so help me God-"
✨BEAUTIFUL✨ Punisher rosary photo from this post !!
Idk where our insurance girls are, probably trying to track down this ambiguous duo bc they slipped away yet again
Purple cross divider from this post. Blue cross divider from this post. Punisher divider from this post. White cross divider from this post. Reblogs and feedback divider from this post.
The rough pad of Wolfwood's thumb brushed over his rosary beads, his lips moving without sound as he prayed in silence. Every prayer, every call to faith was represented by each bead he passed over.
"Wolfwood~ What cha doing?"
The priest sighed, looking over his shoulder at the only other occupant in the hotel room.
Vash sat on his sorry excuse for a twin bed, watching his traveling companion with those too bright eyes. Against the muted designs of the room and linens, the blonde's color was bold and almost out of place in this space devoid of life. Another dusty room in the middle of nowhere, but it was a helluva lot better than trying to get cozy up against the least craggy of rocks.
Wolfwood, in his own twin bed, narrowed his eyes at the Humanoid Typhoon because it was very obvious what he was doing. "Why don't ya catch some shut eye before sunrise, eh Needle Noggin?" he answered instead, watching for a moment as the blonde pouted before turning back to his prayers.
He needed to start over again, it was only proper.
Shifting the beaded necklace in his hand, he grazed his thumb over the cross, committing to the Apostles' Creed, before moving up to give devotion to Our Father. The three Hail Mary's that followed were like second nature to him, and the tip of his thumb settled into the Glory Be just as a shifting to his left divided his attention.
"Wolfwood... I'm hungry~"
Nicholas turned to face his roommate, his features devoid of any kindness. "Spikey... You're a big boy, I'm sure you can manage to find a meal all on your own. I'm busy right now." His last words were pointed, not quite an accusation but certainly a warning.
Vash glowered at his friend, sulking because he wasn't given the answer he wanted. Wolfwood, who was used to dealing with children and their bratty behaviors, turned away and purposefully ignored the man who was getting on his nerves. Beginning again at the Apostles' Creed, he had barely moved up to the next prayer when he felt a tug at his sleeve.
"Wolfwood, I'm going down to get some food, do you want anything?"
"Tongari, if you interrupt me one more time, so help me God-"
The independent plant backed away, hands up in the air in a placating gesture. "Alright, alright, geez~ No need to get so grumpy..." he mumbled, sulking as he shrugged on his red coat.
The assassin sighed, finally feeling as if he was going to get some well earned peace. The tip of his thumb ran down the edges of his cross, not quite praying but just something to occupy himself as Vash bustled out of the room.
When the door clicked shut behind the older man, Wolfwood closed his eyes and bowed his head, his thumb sliding over the cross for the fourth time. "Our Father who art in Heaven, hollowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come-"
The door swung open. "Hey Wolfwood, do you- AH!"
Wolfwood grabbed his pillow and hurled it at the door with such force, that it exploded into a cloud of Toma feathers, and even left a dent in the wooden panels.
"RUDE!" Vash shouted from behind the closed door, before stomping off in a huff down the hall.
The assassin stalked over to the blonde's bed, grabbing his companion's pillow and settling back down onto his own mattress. If the plant issued a complaint about Wolfwood stealing his pillow, the priest would just have to suffocate him with it. Maybe then he could finally pray in peace.

In Your Heart
Jake Kizka x fem reader
Chapter 2: The Meeting

You roll over in the bed expecting to find David sleeping, but instead a ray of sun hits your eyes and you flinch back away from it. Checking your phone, it's a little after noon. David left for work hours ago. His career couldn't be any more different from yours, but you manage to make it work. Sales. That was his business. He worked selling insurance policies to large corporations. He'd approached you at a bar in town two years ago and the rest is history.
Yawning, you starfish out on the mattress stretching your limbs and sinking back into the covers. David would be back around 5. Until then you have the condo to yourself.
When you roll over intending to go back to sleep, your phone buzzes. Groaning, you sit up fully and check your phone. An unfamiliar number lights up the screen and you answer. Your voice is heavy and you croak out a "Hello?"
"(Y/n)?" A low voice asks.
"Jake?" How did he get your number?
"Yes, I'm glad I caught you. I've got a friend at the studio that heard you play last night and wants to meet you." He says quickly and you hear other voices on his end.
"Like a personal friend or an important friend?" You can't keep the interest out of your voice.
"It's a good opportunity for you, we'll just say that. Be here at 4:30. Don't be late." He said and hung up.
You toss your phone back down onto the covers. Mind racing, you cross to the closet. After a few minutes it's painfully obvious you don't have anything remotely appropriate for an important meeting. Aren't you supposed to wear nice clothes to these kinds of things? Everything in your closet is intended to be honky tonk appropriate. Grumbling at your lacking wardrobe, you decide to shower and then figure out what to wear.
The hot water washes away the bewilderment you feel and leaves behind excitement. You wouldn't ask a friend for a favor in the industry, you have definitely always wanted to find your own way. But if someone can facilitate an in? There's no harm in that right? But no, you aren't going to get your hopes up yet. Chances are you'll be back in that bar tomorrow night getting ready for the same show. Just breathe.
You see that Josh (whose number you did already have) has texted you an address. You like the message and toss the phone back on the bed. By the time you've figured out what to wear it's 4pm. You've settled on a high neck knit dress in a dark grey. It's not ideal but it'll do. You know you can play in it if need be, and it goes with your most comfortable pair of boots. By the time the outfit is on, the hair and the face are done, and the Uber is ordered, you only have 5 minutes to get there.
Luckily, it's not far and your Uber driver is traveling at breakneck speed. As you screech to a halt, you realize what this building is. RCA Studio. It shouldn't be a surprise to you. Josh has mentioned before that they record here but it didn't even cross your mind when he sent the address. The facade is unremarkable, but some of the best music in the world has been produced here. Next to them is the man they were with at the bar the night before. As you step into the foyer Josh pulls you in for a tight hug and Jake smiles easily at you.
"Y/n, this is Toby Danzig. He's the exec in charge of A/R for the label." Jake says gesturing towards the man.
"Very nice to meet you Toby. I saw you at my set last night." You say politely as you shake the man's hand. His grip is firm and his icy blue eyes are studying you closely.
"Come on in and we'll talk about what I need from you." Toby said with a friendly sort of authority.
....
You can't believe that you're having possibly the biggest meeting of your music career thus far inside of RCA Studio B. The lights are dim and the large room is littered with instruments, mics, and other equipment. Toby plops down into a dark wooden chair and gestures for you to sit down across from him. The twins settle in at the piano and resume whatever work they must've been doing before you arrived.
"I'm A/R for the studio here. Jake over there recommended you to me when I went to him looking for a guitarist. An all female folk rock group called 'Wolfsbane' is getting off the ground and needs a decent guitarist. I agreed to sign them on if I could replace their guitarist." He speaks so fast you barely comprehend what he's saying.
You? They want you to sign on as a lead guitarist? This is what you've always dreamed of but its almost so outlandish you can't believe it. This is what everyone in Nashville wants and its fallen into your lap.
"Wait, what?" you stutter, "You mean to tell me that A) You want me? and B) This group is just letting you replace their guitarist?"
He nods in ascent, "Exactly. The girl's got a serious drug problem and needs rehab. They were looking for a good way to push her out and I make a good villain."
"I'm not trying to talk you out of this but-"
"No buts. These two over here say you're the best in town. I don't do less than the best." The boys are moving over toward the two of you.
"What have you decided?" Jake asks straddling one of the chairs and resting his chin on his hands. His eyes scan your face, reading the shock plastered all over it.
With a flourish, his brother approaches and says "Yess it's time you follow us into fame and fortune. Both of us hail from the same humble beginnings after all."
A troubling thought crosses your mind.
"So there's not going to be any bad blood between me and the rest of the band?" you ask apprehensively.
"Trust me, I know there won't be." Toby's voice has a slightly mischievous quality now. Like he knows something you don't. But this opportunity is just too good to pass up.
"You know what. Fuck it. I'll do it." you say, not even comprehending how much your life is about to change.
.
.
.
.
.
You've just finished the second chapter! Thank you to anyone who's reading! There's going to be a little bit of a time jump, and that's when we'll get into the meat of the story!

How the Heart Learns to Beat Again
Chapter 2 Preview:
Emilie flung open the wardrobe doors. There was the loud sound of someone opening a suitcase and ploughing through it. She shut the door, a hairbrush in hand, and pulled up a chair at the table. Seated beside Nathalie, she began brushing out her wet hair. The movement of her arm was mesmeric. Gabriel poured her a glass of wine, then sat with them.
‘I don’t suppose you’ve told her why we’re here,’ Emilie said.
Gabriel shook his head and handed her the glass. ‘I thought you’d want to do it together.’
‘I do.’ She took a long sip of the wine, then leaned back in the chair, closing her eyes a moment before opening them and pinning that green stare on their guest. ‘I suppose you’re wondering why a pair like us travelled all the way from Paris just to hunt you down.’
‘It…had crossed my mind,’ Nathalie said. ‘I assume this is some sort of fetish job. A wealthy couple who can get anything they want – sights set on some rare artefact to keep in your personal collection and insure for more than most people would spend in an entire lifetime.’
Another look was exchanged, telling her she was wrong. Whatever they wanted, it wasn’t about the money. She thought back to what Emilie had said about a phone call. In this weather, there was no mobile reception. The only phone in the hotel was an old-fashioned payphone downstairs, outside the entrance. You had to be desperate to use it at a time like this.
Who is Adrien?
Emilie’s gaze was lazy and…seductive? Was that the right word for it? It wasn’t that Nathalie wanted to sleep with her, but there was something persuasive about that look. Something that made her want to give into whatever Emilie suggested.
She glanced back at the girdle, still on the table.
‘We don’t seek more riches,’ Emilie said. ‘We’re not interested in fame or notoriety, either. And this isn’t thrill-seeking. We also don’t wish to become gods, so please, I beg of you: put all such preconceptions out of your mind when I explain what we’re looking for.’
She caressed the rim of her wine glass, eyeing Nathalie under her long, thick eyelashes. As dominating as Gabriel was, Emilie seemed to hold the power here.
‘…okay,’ said Nathalie, hypnotised by the motion of the woman’s finger. ‘What do you seek?’
‘Initially? Immortality – but not for us.’
Nathalie stifled back a laugh. ‘That’s it? Immortality?’
‘But not for us,’ Emilie repeated. ‘Failing that…the power to overcome death. And failing that…the power to undo death.’
‘Oh, of course. Because no human has ever tried for any of that and failed in the most morbid way imaginable.’
‘But we won’t fail,’ Emilie said. There was not the slightest trace of doubt in her voice, not a tremor or pause. She held herself with such poise, as well, her chin up high. Her confidence was a magnetic field reaching out and grabbing Nathalie until she believed they would succeed. If anyone could, it would be them and only them.
‘Who’s dying? Is it Adrien?’ she asked, satisfied when she heard Gabriel’s sharp intake of breath.
But Emilie never wavered. ‘I knew we couldn’t pull one over on you.’ She rewarded Nathalie with a smile, and hell, if that didn’t make something in Nathalie’s chest open, as though she had never known how to breathe until now. ‘You are correct. Adrien – our son – has been diagnosed with a rare blood disease. The doctors say we only have a handful of months left with him.’
‘And you’re spending them here with me, instead of savouring every precious moment you have left with your child?’
It was Gabriel who replied – snapped, more like, his blue eyes suddenly like ice, freezing her on the spot. ‘We are not abandoning our child, if that’s what you mean. Until you have sat at your child’s bedside, watching him waste away a little more each day, powerless in the face of biology, you know nothing of what we have gone through. We are not wasting time. We were wasting time by remaining with him and doing nothing.’
He was breathing hard, his chest heaving and hands trembling around his glass, which he now set down, perhaps worried he might throw it across the room and smash it against a wall – or maybe throw it at her. His stare remained on her, locking her in her chair and sealing her throat from bringing up any words of reply.
And yet, he was beautiful in his rage. Somewhere in the world, her father may still be out there, feeling nothing of what Gabriel felt for his child. Once, she’d had a mother who felt none of this, either.

Paul Bunyan Day
North American folklore is replete with stories of larger-than-life figures, but none of them stands taller than the giant lumberjack Paul Bunyan, who is said to have traveled around the continent with Babe, his big blue ox. Many cities and states across the United States pay tribute to Bunyan, some have put up statues of him, and some also claim him to be their native son. Some areas where Bunyan is prominently featured include Bemidji, Brainerd, and Akeley, in Minnesota; Bangor, Maine; and locations in Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, and California. On Paul Bunyan Day, his legend is not only celebrated in these locations but all around the world.
Today’s observance is particularly tied to Bangor, Maine. Residents claim Bunyan was born in the woods outside of the city on February 12, 1834. Coincidentally, this is also the date that Bangor was incorporated. A 31-foot statue of Bunyan stands in front of the Cross Insurance Center on Main Street. It was gifted to the city by the New York-based model-making company Messmore & Damon on the occasion of the 125th birthday of Bunyan and the city. A time capsule is enshrined within it which will be opened 125 years after it was placed there, on February 12, 2084.
Throughout history, the story of Paul Bunyan has changed and grown until becoming what it is today. One account says that Bunyan was based on Fabian “Joe” Fournier, a French-Canadian logger who moved to Michigan after the American Civil War. Known as Saginaw Joe, he was strongly built, had giant hands, and was six feet in height. Rumor has it that he also had two sets of teeth. It is believed that he died in 1875 after being hit in the back of the head with a mallet during a fight in Bay City, Michigan. After his death and the trial of his alleged killer, stories about him started turning into tales.
At some point, the story of Fournier combined with that of Bon Jean, a French-Canadian war hero, and the story of Bunyan was further solidified. Bon Jean had played a role in the Papineau Rebellion in Canada in 1837. Bunyan’s name also comes from Bon Jean. Stories of Paul Bunyan, which were full of hyperbole and exaggerations, proliferated by word of mouth, being passed from generation to generation in logging communities and amongst lumberjacks in the United States and Canada.
Written stories about Bunyan started appearing in the early twentieth century. One of the first stories to appear in print, titled “Round River,” was written by James MacGillivray and was printed in a local newspaper in Oscoda, Michigan, in 1906. Four years later, MacGillivray shared a collection of stories about Bunyan when working at the Detroit News Tribune. Bunyan got his first national print exposure in 1912 when MacGillivray and a poet collaborated to create a poem for Lumberman magazine that was inspired by the lumberjack.
In 1914, William Laughead—a logger and advertising manager of the Red River Lumber Company—depicted Bunyan in his company’s advertising pamphlets. This was the first time Bunyan was depicted in illustrations, and they helped to spread his story across the United States. Laughead’s illustrations also showcased Babe the blue ox and gave her her name.
There are many legends surrounding Bunyan. It is said that he started the logging profession in the United States and that he hired large men who cleared large forests across the continent with him and Babe. It is said that his and Babe’s footprints created Minnesota’s 10,000 lakes, that he created the Great Lakes so Babe had a place to drink, that he formed the Grand Canyon by dragging his axe, that he made Mount Hood by piling up stones to extinguish a campfire, that he cleared all of South and North Dakota for farming, and that he was able to eat 50 pancakes a minute. These are all quite impressive feats. Today we celebrate the giant lumberjack behind them.
How to Observe Paul Bunyan Day
Celebrate all things Paul Bunyan today. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Visit one of the many Paul Bunyan statues. Some locations where you can find statues include Portland, Bangor, Bemidji, Brainerd, Akeley, Klamath, and Cheshire. It would be especially appropriate to visit the statue in Bangor today, on the anniversary of the city’s founding and the date on which they claim Paul Bunyan was born. See if there are any Paul Bunyan Day celebrations taking place in Bangor or in any other city.
Ride Paul Bunyan’s Log Chute in the Mall of America.
Visit the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp Museum in Eau Claire.
Make and eat some flapjacks.
Make a pilgrimage to Paul Bunyan’s Cook Shanty in Wisconsin Dells or Minocqua.
Watch the 1958 short film Paul Bunyan, the 1995 film Tale Tale, or the 2017 animated film Bunyan & Babe.
Tell stories around a campfire.
Read books and stories about Paul Bunyan. Some examples include The Marvelous Exploits of Paul Bunyan by William Laughead, Paul Bunyan Swings His Axe by Dell J. McCormick, and Paul Bunyan by Esther Shephard.

Dashcam Chronicles: OwnSilent RN46 Resolves Disputed Lane Change Accident
Incident Overview:
On March 20, 2025, Sophie Hernandez, a teacher from Dallas, Texas, was on her way to work, traveling along the Dallas North Tollway during the morning rush hour. The road was congested as usual, with cars moving at a crawl. Sophie had been in the left lane for several minutes, waiting to exit, when a blue Honda Civic suddenly cut across three lanes of traffic and swerved into her lane. Sophie had to brake hard to avoid a collision, but the Honda’s rear bumper scraped the side of her car before it continued weaving through traffic, driving off without stopping.
Sophie immediately pulled over to the shoulder and checked the damage. There was a noticeable scrape and dent on the passenger side of her vehicle, just above the rear wheel. Her heart raced as she realized the other driver had caused the accident and fled the scene.
Sophie quickly called the police and filed a report. She also reached out to her insurance company. However, the Honda driver later claimed that Sophie had been the one who made an unsafe lane change and that she was at fault for the accident. According to the Honda driver, Sophie had forced her car into their lane, causing the collision.
Sophie, shocked by the false accusation, had no witnesses to back up her side of the story. She was unsure how to prove her innocence, as the other driver’s account conflicted with her own. But Sophie had recently installed the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam, and she hoped that the footage from the camera could help clarify the situation.
Role of Dashcam Evidence:
The OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam had been recording the entire time Sophie was driving, capturing the events leading up to the incident. The 4K ultra-clear resolution and wide-angle lens provided an in-depth view of the entire scene, ensuring that no detail was missed.
Upon reviewing the footage, Sophie immediately found the section of the video that showed the exact moment of the incident. The timestamp on the footage indicated that the accident occurred at 8:14 AM, and the motion detection feature ensured that the dashcam recorded the moments leading up to the crash.
The footage clearly showed that Sophie had been driving in the left lane for a considerable time and was not attempting to change lanes when the Honda Civic suddenly swerved into her lane from the far right. The dashcam footage captured the Honda Civic’s erratic movements, where it crossed multiple lanes of traffic without signaling, ultimately forcing its way into Sophie’s lane.
The video showed that Sophie had reacted quickly, braking hard and swerving to the left to avoid a direct collision with the Honda. However, despite her quick reflexes, the Honda’s rear bumper scraped Sophie’s passenger side before continuing to weave through traffic and speeding away. The wide-angle lens provided clear visibility of the entire incident, showing that Sophie was in her lane and had not initiated any unsafe lane changes.
Most importantly, the clear timestamp on the video proved the exact time of the accident, while the motion detection feature allowed Sophie to track the exact movements of both her car and the Honda. The evidence was irrefutable—Sophie had been in her lane, and the Honda driver was solely responsible for the accident.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings:
Sophie submitted the footage from the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam to both her insurance company and the police. The video was carefully reviewed by the insurance adjuster, who quickly confirmed that Sophie was not at fault. The clear, high-quality footage proved that the Honda had made an unsafe lane change without signaling, directly causing the collision.
The police also reviewed the dashcam footage and were able to corroborate Sophie’s account of the events. The footage clearly showed the Honda Civic’s reckless driving, which had resulted in the accident. The driver of the Honda was later identified using the dashcam’s capture of the vehicle’s license plate, and the driver was contacted by the police. After reviewing the footage, the driver admitted to changing lanes improperly and failing to stop after the collision.
Sophie’s insurance company quickly processed her claim, and she was compensated for the damage to her vehicle. The Honda driver’s insurance also covered the costs of the repair, as they accepted liability based on the clear evidence from the dashcam footage.
Lessons from the Incident:
This incident is a prime example of how dashcams can make a crucial difference in resolving disputes, particularly in cases of false accusations. Without the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam, Sophie would have had no way to prove that the other driver was at fault, and she could have been wrongfully blamed for the accident. The dashcam footage provided undeniable evidence, making it clear that the Honda driver had caused the incident by weaving across multiple lanes.
The 4K ultra-clear resolution, wide-angle lens, and motion detection features of the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam ensured that every detail was captured, from the erratic lane changes of the Honda Civic to the exact moment of impact. The license plate capture feature also played a critical role in identifying the responsible party and holding them accountable.
This story highlights the importance of dashcams not just for safety but also for protecting yourself from wrongful claims. In the event of a lane-change dispute, having clear footage can help clarify who was at fault and prevent the stress of a lengthy claims process.
Emotional Impact:
For Sophie, the emotional toll of the accident was compounded by the stress of being falsely accused. She was worried about the consequences of the other driver’s claim, which could have affected her insurance premiums and her driving record. However, when she reviewed the footage from the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam, she felt a sense of relief and reassurance. The video was a clear, undeniable witness to the truth.
Knowing that she had concrete proof of what had happened allowed Sophie to confidently present her case to her insurance company and the police. It gave her peace of mind, knowing that the truth was preserved and that she would not be unjustly blamed for an accident she didn’t cause.
OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam – The Ultimate Witness for Every Journey
The OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam ensures that you have the evidence you need in case of accidents or disputes. With 4K ultra-clear recording, wide-angle coverage, and motion detection, the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam captures every important detail, providing undeniable proof in case of accidents or wrongful claims.

Safety Tips for Driving with Car Hire Menorca on the Island
Driving around Menorca is one of the best ways to explore its pristine beaches, charming towns, and scenic countryside. With car hire Menorca, you can enjoy the freedom to travel at your own pace and discover hidden gems that public transport can't reach. However, to ensure a smooth and safe driving experience on the island, it’s essential to follow some important safety tips.
1. Familiarize Yourself with Local Traffic Rules
Before hitting the road, take time to understand Menorca’s traffic rules and regulations. The island follows Spanish traffic laws, which include:
Driving on the right-hand side of the road.
Mandatory seatbelt use for all passengers.
Prohibiting the use of mobile phones while driving.
When you opt for car hire Menorca, most rental companies will provide a quick overview of local driving laws to help you stay compliant.
2. Plan Your Routes in Advance
Menorca’s roads can be narrow and winding, especially in rural areas. To avoid unnecessary stress, plan your routes ahead of time using GPS or maps. Many rental cars come equipped with navigation systems, which can be a lifesaver in unfamiliar terrain.
Planning ahead also ensures you can allocate sufficient time for your journey and avoid speeding—a critical factor in safe driving.
3. Drive Cautiously on Rural Roads
While Menorca boasts stunning countryside views, its rural roads often come with challenges, such as:
Narrow lanes.
Sharp turns.
Occasional livestock crossings.
When driving with car hire Menorca in these areas, maintain a moderate speed and stay alert for oncoming traffic. Honking lightly on blind corners can also help signal your presence to other drivers.
4. Watch for Cyclists and Pedestrians
Menorca is a popular destination for cyclists and walkers, especially near beaches and nature reserves. Always be mindful of their presence on the roads. Give cyclists plenty of space when overtaking and slow down in areas with heavy pedestrian activity.
Your car hire Menorca experience can remain stress-free by prioritizing safety and respecting other road users.
5. Follow Parking Guidelines
Parking in Menorca is generally straightforward, but it’s important to follow local regulations to avoid fines. Look for designated parking zones, which are often marked with blue lines. These areas require a ticket, which can be purchased from nearby machines.
Avoid parking in restricted zones or areas marked with yellow lines. When picking up your vehicle from a car hire Menorca company, ask about parking tips specific to the island.
6. Carry the Essentials
To ensure a hassle-free journey, always have these essentials with you:
Driver’s license and rental agreement.
Insurance documents.
A first-aid kit and reflective safety vest (commonly provided by rental companies).
Spare tire and tools for emergencies.
Most car hire Menorca providers equip their vehicles with these necessities, but it’s a good idea to double-check before driving off.
7. Be Prepared for Roundabouts
Roundabouts are common in Menorca, and understanding how to navigate them is crucial for safe driving. Remember to yield to traffic already in the roundabout and use your indicators to signal your exit.
Driving cautiously in roundabouts ensures a smooth journey and prevents confusion for other drivers.
8. Respect Speed Limits
Speed limits in Menorca vary depending on the area:
50 km/h in urban zones.
90 km/h on rural roads.
120 km/h on highways.
Adhering to these limits is not only crucial for your safety but also helps you avoid fines. When driving a vehicle from car hire Menorca, ensure you’re aware of speed cameras that are commonly placed along major roads.
9. Avoid Driving Under the Influence
Spain has strict laws against driving under the influence of alcohol. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.05%, which is lower than in many other countries. If you plan to enjoy Menorca’s local wines or cocktails, arrange for alternate transportation or ensure you have a designated driver.
Responsible driving is key to a safe and enjoyable experience with car hire Menorca.
10. Stay Alert at Night
While Menorca is generally safe for nighttime driving, rural areas may lack adequate lighting. Drive cautiously, use your high beams when appropriate, and stay alert for wildlife crossing the road.
If possible, limit long-distance travel after dark, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the roads.
Conclusion
Exploring Menorca with car hire Menorca is a fantastic way to experience the island’s natural beauty and cultural landmarks. By following these safety tips, you can ensure a secure and enjoyable journey throughout your trip.
Whether you’re navigating scenic coastal routes or heading to a business meeting in Mahón, staying informed and prepared will help you make the most of your adventure. Safe travels!

2024 Week 36 Notes: Planners Gotta Plan

The new 2024-25 COVID vaccines are available, so FunkyPlaid and I got ours on Friday. Because we went to a pharmacy, my health insurance didn’t cover them, so I had to use funds from my HRA. (We could have waited until our medical provider had appointments, but that would have been late September or early October — and with travel coming up soon, I was unwilling to wait.)
It is bizarre and enraging to see how agencies supposedly dedicated to public health are flailing in this moment. I’m extremely fortunate to have a job that provides health insurance, an HRA, and sick leave, and I can afford KN95 masks and rapid antigen tests. What about people who are uninsured or underinsured?
I know it’s a bummer to read this, but it’s a bigger bummer to try to survive during yet another COVID surge. Let’s take care of our health, for ourselves and for our communities.
Concentrating on
This time of year is Planner Season, when the 2025 planners are released and people like me (and maybe you too) gobble them up and then spend the rest of this year hoping that next year we have lives exciting enough to plan.
Ever the optimist, my planner line-up for 2025 is:
For my personal planner, daily log, habit tracker, reading journal, and commonplace book, I’ll be trying the Sterling Ink Common Planner in their new N1 size, which fits inside a Traveler’s Notebook. I’m currently using a Hobonichi Weeks, which is 95mm x 186mm; the N1 size is 110mm x 210mm.
For my work planner, the Wonderland 222 A5 Weekly Planner has been working well for me this year, so I’ll try it again in 2025.
Cultivating
✍🏻 Drafting two stories, one for performance (I hope 🤞🏻) and one for a collection.
🧶 Still knitting that gift for someone.
🥘 Food I made that was yummy:
Peperonata with peppers from a coworker’s CSA box, plus peppers from our own CSA box. CSA boxes are great!
Gluten-free vegan apple crisp. I am not a huge fan of apples in their primary form; I prefer them as a cinnamon delivery device. So this recipe from Minimalist Baker, apples chopped up and baked with oats and sugar? That works.
Sliced heirloom tomatoes on toast spread thinly with mayonnaise. Truffle salt if you’re feeling fancy. (I was.)
🇮 Learning Italian with Duolingo.
💼 The workweek was short because of the holiday on Monday, but also long because of everything. I’m still trying to create better boundaries around that.

From “What would an adequate COVID response look like?” by Julia Doubleday:
Right now, state representatives are deliberately avoiding mention of COVID, while propagandizing the safety of infection and/or the end of the pandemic by refusing to mask. It is hard to imagine how successful a pandemic response might be if public officials were actually trying to end the pandemic. We quite literally have public health and political and media figures working to hide three pieces of critical information: public knowledge of the virus, public knowledge of mitigation measures that would reduce viral spread, and public knowledge of the severity of the virus (which would motivate desire to reduce viral spread).
