Life Update + Postcards from Mount Pulag
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If there's one thing I'm particularly proud of that I did this year in the name of self-care, it is using my Apple Watch for what it was designed to do and being mindful of closing my rings on the Fitness App, which includes meeting my Move, Stand, and Exercise requirements for the day.
Last weekend, I went on my first major walk this year, to Mount Pulag in Benguet, the majestic and highest mountain in Luzon. For the first time ever, I was able to set a *drum roll please* record-breaking 42K steps, perhaps more because my watch died in the middle of the climb. It never occurred to me to go on this ALMOST 10-hour hike until J, who by the way was a famous OG Tumblr influencer during the peak Tumblr era circa 2012 (if you know him, mag-asawa ka na hahaha), introduced me to the idea of going to Baguio (I haven’t been to Baguio since forever) and eventually having to explore Mount Pulag after. J and I have known each other for over 12+ years, but it was only this year that we began to see each other more frequently; he is also the person who introduced and challenged me to finish my rings on the Fitness app. I began this "ring" journey at the end of March, but I wasn't fully committed until I started seeing some, hmm, what's the word, "changes" when I started monitoring my InBody results, which show my weight, BMI, muscle mass, and even body fat percentage decreasing. Long story short, I'm making some small progress with trying to make my BMI normal again. Hey, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to paint the typical fitness buff image with raging, strong-looking muscles, because that's not who I am, but I wanted to give myself credit also for losing 10kgs in just 4 months, and I'm not even pulling my hair out about it, just that awareness of "Did I close my rings today?" moment. Like I told J, I never expected accountability to feel this good. So I'm quite delighted with that.

Enough of the fitness thingee and going back to Mount Pulag, I'm so happy that we were able to pull it off this year. We started by staying in Baguio for 2 days which by the way the weather was THE. BEST. Having to walk around the city in layered clothes without breaking a sweat as a pawisin was HEAVEN. It was something that I missed when I went back to Manila. After 2 days, we headed straight to Kabayan, Benguet, where our homestay was located, and by midnight started our trek to Pulag summit. The trek was surprisingly easy. The quiet and quaint landscapes while on our way to the summit were something that I enjoyed so much. It was tiring and yes, the weather was extremely cold. Miss Hypothermia is REAL especially on the summit but with the right amount of clothing, it's no biggie. Just do a little bit of research before signing up for the hike and you'll be just fine. On that trip, we met and bonded with new faces which I hope soon will become friends because they're nice to be with which made the hike bearable. Being the beach person that I am which is very OBVIOUS on this blogosphere, exploring the mountains and the countryside was very refreshing to see and I kinda wanted to make that commitment to at least do this at least once a year. Let's see!

Overall, the Mountain Province trip including late-night walks in Baguio, wandering to places and cafés and bar hopping walking side to side because we’re drunk AF, and then Mount Pulag was something I'm so grateful for that I get to check them out this year. There were "unplanned" and "down" moments on that trip, sure, but I guess that's just normal, especially since I'm with the person I wanted to get to know more, and J, if you're reading this, thank you. I feel like all the things that happened on that trip have a reason and I just wanna say thank you for being…you. I will not be surprised if one day that rough idea of a psycho-thriller slasher movie we kind of created while sitting on a bus will soon come to life. Write that fucking screenplay. PLEASE.
So that's my not-so-quick life update that no one asked about. I think I mentioned before in this space that the more I have something "major" going on with my life whether professional or personal, I am less inclined to talk about it versus in my heyday, loud, teenage years and I think that's what really living is all about. Touch some grass they say, and literally, I did that in the mountains of Mount Pulag, and those memories which I hope I could bottle, and that seeing something so beautiful is enough to remind me that everything's gonna be alright.

From our balcony in Baguio, Philippines. Smoke from the recent fires still obscured the mountain peaks this morning, even though they didn't come near us. We've spent most of the day with the house closed up and both air cleaners on blast. In some ways, I'm ready for wet season, but I'll be sad when it starts getting hot again.

Bad memories. Beautiful photographs. Maybe I'll be able to share the story behind these photographs someday. But for now, these photographs would suffice.

You will never be able to experience everything. So, please, do poetical justice to your soul and simply experience yourself. When you have once seen the glow of happiness on the face of a beloved person, you know that a man can have no vocation but to awaken that light on the faces surrounding him.

📍bencab museum, 2022.
favorites:
—ready to hope (2011) by abi dionisio is an absolute favorite of mine. the figure stands in front of a tattered wallpaper, with a fabric wrapped around their body. the whole piece might have been a nod to the phrase “blind hope”; to be so helpless as to cover one’s eyes, to dream freely and without abandon, and to optimistically leave everything to an idealistic fate. i find myself resonating with the sentiment. maybe the security of not knowing and perceiving the world through rose-colored glasses is comforting. naïve, but better than quitting [3rd row, left].
—brick game (2001) by jose santos iii is a thought-provoking piece. the brick depicted in the painting interestingly takes on the form of the person behind the window. on the other side, a man holding a ten of diamonds card seems to be leaving, and a woman is watching his departure. the girl at the center pulls the focus from the entire piece, as she is clad in red as opposed to the pallidness of the other figures. every element, in my eyes, all come together to portray the tale of a shattered family. the girl in red, sitting forlorn and dejected, recalls the day her father left, seemingly after his true motives have been revealed as symbolized by his handheld card (i.e. showing his hand), and her mother watching him walk out the door. the figure on the right, behind the brick wall, might have represented her self-perception—trapped, unable to do anything as she watched it all unfold before and as she relive it in her mind now. so ensnared within that even the brick wall has memorized her. and that might have been the reason behind the title—to break out of the game, to break out of the brick. but, of course, that’s only one out of surely hundreds of possible interpretations [2nd row, left].

Baguio City: Life After Lights Out
There’s more to Baguio night market and dance clubs after five
For those who seek more than the usual tourist spots, Baguio offers a unique blend of music and drinks at Canto Bogchi Joint. Every weekend, the local indie scene takes over (thanks to Not Very Noise), filling the air with electrifying tunes. Forget the hustle and bustle of Session Road and the night market— the real action is on the dance floor at Canto, where homegrown bands unleash their music, shaking the city of Pines to its core. Whether you’re a fan of spine-tingling guitar solos or just want to warm up with a sick bassline, Canto is where the weekend comes alive.
You should be dancing
As the lights dim and all eyes focus on the corner stage, the air is charged with anticipation. The first chord sends a wave of excitement through the crowd. Soon, hips sway and heads nod to the beat of the song. The crowd, a diverse mix of students, artists, clocked-out workers, and tourists, becomes one as they press closer to the stage. It’s a melting pot of people—wherever you’re from and whether you’re a newbie or a patron of the Baguio indie scene, you’re an equal part of this community.
Canto’s stage isn’t just for local hopefuls looking for their big break. In fact, it has hosted known bands like Chicosci, who brought the house down riff after riff, turning what started as a laid-back jam session into a full-blown sonic rock out. Artists like Clara Benin included the sick joint on her Befriending My Tears tour stop and sang her heart out.
As much as big-name acts pull the masses, it’s bands like Rest Day Overtime, Amateurish, among others, that keep the true indie heartbeat pumping at Canto. These under-the-radar acts own the stage, bringing raw talent and unfiltered charm that can’t be taught — just felt. Miss them, and you’ll be missing the soul of the scene.
If you haven’t attended a gig at Canto, now is the best time to check the next gig date.

The City of Pine🌲
EP 2 🎬
Tumblr media
My family thought of travelling from Pangasinan to Baguio to rest while we were on our way home (Calamba). while we were on Kennon road, my sister shared her creepy moments that she experienced herself on the road we were traveling. As we got closer to our destination, I became more excited because I hadn't gone to Baguio since I was 7 years old. Baguio City, often known as the "City of Pines," is a fantastic spot to visit at night. As you go around the city, the city changes into a spectacular show of lights, and the air grows colder.
When we arrived, we immediately ate dinner and catches up with old friends. After we ate, we went for a walk down Session Road, and as we continued walking, I could feel the chill of Baguio City on my cheeks. Baguio is also known for its lively night market, which sells a broad variety of unique souvenirs. Hundreds of stores, commonly known as "ukay-ukay," can be found at the Baguio Night Market. There are several goods you can buy at Baguio Night Market, which never fails to draw shoppers and tourists.  Bags, footwear, apparel, jewelry, kitchenware, and digital accessories are all available.
Tumblr media
hungry? No problem, after spending hours shopping at the Baguio Night Market, your stomach will growl and you will be hungry. There are plenty of food booths in this area, so don't be worried.  They offer burgers, barbeques, cool beverages, mami & lugaw, and Korean street foods, which I enjoy. After all that walking, you deserve some nice meal. After eating and shopping at the night market, we rested and enjoyed the remaining hours before we go home. Visiting the Baguio night market is more than simply buying and dining; it's an all-around sensory experience. 6 hours is ample time to enjoy the entire nighttime shopping experience while relishing the cool mountain the breeze. therefore, seeing this location is a must during your trip to Baguio. I swear I'll return to this Baguio Night Market for a good find and nightlife. After our night trip, the Baguio Night Market became one of my favorite tourist sites in the Philippines' summer capital. Overall, having a beautiful nightlife in Baguio City was a tremendous experience for me. I've had a nice night walking tour, and my eyes are loaded with many different kinds of things.

Baguio City
Have you ever been to a place where you enjoyed the weather, the view, and the place where all the pine trees stand tall? If not, then Baguio is a place to where you can experience walking at night while embracing the cold air, the place that has a lot of best coffee shops, and an honest taxi drivers.
Tumblr media
Wherever I'm in Baguio, I feel like I'm at peace. Strolling around the city help my mind to calm, to not think about my problems for a while. It is very therapeutic to walk around the streets, admiring the trees, and be embraced by the cold weather. The foggy road, the flowers that bloom on the sidewalk, the tourist spots, and the foods. These are all the reasons why my mind is at peace wherever I'm in this place. Indeed, Baguio is place to be. A place you keep coming back.

Umali kayo sa Baguio!
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vista De Pino.
