RPPC of Great Central Railway loco No. 969 @ Trafford Park by Frederick McLean Via Flickr: An old RPPC of Great Central Railway (GCR) steam locomotive No. 969 outside Trafford Park engine/locomotive shed (13A). This real photo postcard was produced by 'F. Moore's Railway Photographs' of London, in the very early 1900s. It is annotated with "outside Trafford Park shed". No. 969 was a X4 class 4-2-2 engine, built in the Gorton Works, and new to GCR in Aug 1900. In 1923 the existing railway companies were grouped into 'the big four', the GCR becoming part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) who renumbered the engine as 5969 in Aug 1924. The locomotive was withdrawn from service in Jul 1926, then scrapped back at the Gorton Works. There’s a midweek spherical of Premier League fixtures for Matchday 13, with video games being performed throughout Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night time.
It contains the highest two going head-to-head as Liverpool play host to Tottenham, Arsenal’s determined bid to get on observe towards high-flying Southampton and rather more.

Tuesday 15
Wolves v Chelsea – 6pm, Prime Video by way of BT TV
Wolves host Chelsea with either side trying to bounce again from disappointing 1-0 defeats on the weekend.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s males got here undone within the last minute towards Aston Villa, as Anwar El-Ghazi netted a penalty to offer the guests all three factors and native bragging rights.
And Chelsea spurned the prospect to go prime after they produced a listless show at Goodison Park and went right down to a Gylfi Sigurdsson spot-kick.
In each cases big-money attacking gamers did not ship. For Chelsea, Kai Havertz delivered a very poor efficiency, whereas Wolves’ 18-year-old striker Fabio Silva struggled to fill the sizable void left by Raul Jimenez.
Santo’s males are lacking their talisman badly, struggling two straight defeats and in whole they’ve misplaced 80% of the matches they’ve performed with out Jimenez. Tuesday could be the right time to show that round.
Man City v West Brom – 8pm, Prime Video by way of BT TV
Two steps ahead, one step again. Simply as Manchester Metropolis constructing momentum with back-to-back wins over Burnley and Fulham, a goalless draw at Outdated Trafford within the derby halted Pep Guardiola’s males of their tracks.
The go to of West Brom although, on paper, appears to be like like one other alternative to get again to successful methods. The Baggies sit second-bottom after a 2-1 defeat at Newcastle and have misplaced every of their final 13 matches towards Metropolis.
The hosts boast a formidable file when taking part in league video games in midweek too, with 23 wins from 26 Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night time fixtures.
It might be a troublesome ask for West Brom however after taking nothing from video games towards Crystal Palace and Newcastle, they should begin selecting up factors from someplace.
Wednesday 16
Wednesday’s fixtures get underway on the Emirates, the place an Arsenal aspect in disaster will attempt desperately to show their fortunes round towards in-form Southampton.
Issues have gone from unhealthy, to worse, to disastrous, in Arsenal’s final three Premier League matches – defeat to Wolves, shedding away at arch rivals Tottenham after which at dwelling to Burnley following Granit Xhaka’s naïve crimson card.
The sending off is the sixth Arsenal have acquired underneath Mikel Arteta – double that of another aspect throughout this time. There’s a sense that as confidence ebbs away, so does self-discipline.
Arteta wants a win desperately to ease the stress mounting upon him, however towards a high-energy Southampton aspect recent off a 3-0 win on the weekend, Saints will likely be in no temper to be handing out favours.
Leeds v Newcastle – 6pm, Prime Video by way of BT TV
After a stable begin to the marketing campaign, one win in six matches has dampened the spirit round Elland Highway significantly. Angelo Ogbonna’s late header on Friday night time noticed Leeds fall to a second successive defeat and slip to 14th within the desk.
In what looks like a classic Premier League fixture, they play host to Newcastle for the primary time since 2004, when Alan Shearer’s purpose received it for the Magpies.
Regardless of having 5 absentees, reportedly on account of Covid-19 points, the guests nonetheless managed to say a 2-1 win over West Brom final trip which leaves them 12th and with a sport in hand over most round them.
It guarantees to be an enchanting sport with a stark conflict of types in Marcelo Bielsa’s and Steve Bruce’s method. Leeds favour a high-press, high-energy, ball-dominant type of play whereas Newcastle sacrifice possession and present little attacking intent to maintain themselves stable.
Leicester v Everton – 6pm, Prime Video by way of BT TV
Two sides who’ve led the Premier League desk this season do battle, as Everton head south to the midlands to face Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester.
The Foxes are driving excessive in third, solely a degree off leaders Tottenham, after a complete 3-0 win over Brighton wherein James Maddison scored a sensational brace.
The attacking midfielder appeared imperious towards The Seagulls with one of many objectives a luxurious curling strike that left Brighton goalkeeper Mat Ryan greedy at skinny air.
Everton although stopped the skid on the weekend, with a formidable victory over Chelsea to offer the two,000 supporters in attendance at Goodison Park a giant carry.
With issues so tight within the desk, a win for the Toffees may carry themselves again inside attain of the highest whereas dragging Leicester proper again right down to earth.
Fulham v Brighton – 8pm, Prime Video by way of BT TV
Who’d have thought it. After three video games of the Premier League season and three defeats, many had prematurely written Fulham off as dead-and-buried. One bookmaker even took the chance to pay out on The Cottagers getting relegated.
However Scott Parker’s males have breathed new life into their marketing campaign and secured a landmark outcome on Sunday after they held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw. Solely Burnley’s shock win at Arsenal denied Fulham climbing out the relegation zone.
So after taking a degree off the champions, the hosts will likely be determined to say their third victory of the marketing campaign in what appears to be like like a winnable match – at dwelling to Brighton.
The Seagulls are a kind of sides Parker will likely be hoping to pull into hassle, as they sit simply two factors above Fulham within the desk.
A 3-0 defeat at Leicester final trip suggests Brighton may be bought at. Even at this early stage of the season, the results of this one may have enormous ramifications for who survives the drop.
It’s the conflict on the summit, as Tottenham journey to the house of the champions with either side hoping to finish Matchday 13 on the prime.
Spurs appeared to have left the door open for Liverpool on Sunday after they did not beat Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, however Jurgen Klopp’s males faltered themselves in a 1-1 draw at Fulham.
Wednesday night time’s fixture already appears to be like to be an enormous conflict despite the fact that we’re only a third of the way in which by way of the season. With Jose Mourinho in cost, you get the sensation the Portuguese boss will relish nothing greater than escaping Anfield with a 0-0 draw.
Will probably be as much as Liverpool to interrupt the guests down they usually can take solace from a stable file towards the north Londoners. The Reds have misplaced simply as soon as of their final 15 Premier League clashes towards Tottenham and have received every of the final 4.
However this season’s Liverpool are shakier than the group that stormed to the title in 2019/20. They’ve already dropped 11 factors – simply 4 factors fewer than they did within the entirety of final season.
With ongoing harm issues and a struggling backline, Liverpool look a little bit extra weak than common and Mourinho will little question have his aspect going for the kill.
The sixth match of a jam-packed Wednesday is a London derby from the London Stadium as Crystal Palace go to David Moyes’ Hammers.
West Ham bounced again from a 3-1 defeat to Manchester United, a sport they dominated for probably the most half, with a 2-1 win at Leeds.
Palace in the meantime adopted up a 5-1 thumping of West Brom with a creditable draw at dwelling to league-leaders Tottenham on Sunday.
With 5 locations, but simply three factors separating them, this one may see a giant rise or a speedy fall within the desk as West Ham sit sixth and Palace 11th.
Roy Hodgson’s males got here out on prime in each their encounters final yr, coming from behind to win in every of them. On Wednesday they’ve the prospect to do one thing they’ve by no means executed earlier than – win three consecutive league video games towards West Ham.
Thursday 17 January
Thursday will get underway with the sooner of two clashes as Aston Villa host Burnley at Villa Park. Either side began the campaigns with extraordinarily totally different fortunes, Villa have been flying excessive after 4 wins from 4 whereas Burnley took a solitary level from their opening six.
Villa had tailed off significantly since however bought again on observe with a 1-0 win at Wolves in a West Nation derby. It was a outcome Dean Smith described as a “nice win” whereas criticising a number of the refereeing selections.
Burnley in the meantime secured a shock victory at The Emirates, benefiting from Arsenal’s disarray to say all three factors as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored simply their sixth purpose of the season.
As The Clarets look to construct on the Arsenal outcome, Villa ought to anticipate arising towards a well-organised Burnley aspect as at all times as Sean Dyche appears to be like to say only a second win in seven towards the midlands aspect.
Second-season syndrome has taken maintain within the Metal Metropolis and Chris Wilder is struggling to search out the remedy. Sheffield United have claimed only one level, but only one level, from their opening 12 matches and have managed to attain simply 5 instances.
Whereas they’ve been aggressive in most these defeats, The Blades’ efficiency final trip after they have been soundly overwhelmed 3-0 at Southampton may have involved Wilder greater than another of the poor outcomes this season.
Wilder, who has labored wonders at Bramall Lane, was even issued the dreaded vote of confidence by proprietor Prince Abdullah simply earlier than kick-off at St Mary’s.
They have to begin selecting up factors and quick. A house tie towards Manchester United isn’t the best match for them to take action however with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s males so inconsistent, Wilder will hope to catch them on an off-day.

The 2019/20 Premier League season has only just finished, but the transfer market is open and already in full swing. Chelsea have been the busiest in the summer window so far, with deadly attackers Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech already joining in big-money deals from RB Leipzig and Ajax respectively. Werner has already been training with Chelsea following his move from RB LeipzigAnd more arrivals could be coming to Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard accelerates his efforts to sign Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Manchester City are said to be close to sealing their first signing of the summer with Valencia starlet Ferran Torres close to joining in a £40million deal, and Nathan Ake may well follow too. But what position does every Premier League club – including newly-promoted sides Leeds and West Brom – need to strengthen in this summer? Find out below… LATEST FOOTBALL NEWS GOSS Transfer news live: Spurs in Deeney talks, Chelsea's £50m Pope bid, Man United targetLATEST Aubameyang quizzed on Arsenal future, Arteta 'wants to build squad around him'GOSS Arsenal transfer news live: Aubameyang 'sounds like' he is leaving, Guendouzi to JuveEMOTIONAL Martinez breaks down in tears as Arsenal keeper sheds light on 'long' journeyPAINFUL Pulisic and Azpilicueta to miss Bayern clash with injuries suffered in FA Cup finalGOSS Chelsea transfer news live: £50m goalkeeper swoop, starlet wanted in BundesligaGOSSIP Man United transfer news live: Juve's Smalling swoop, £13.5m ace wanted, Sanchez feeINJURY Heartbreak for Pedro as he dislocates shoulder in last minutes as Chelsea playerCLUMSY Arsenal FA Cup hero Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang drops trophy during celebrationsEND OF ERA Eddie Howe leaves Bournemouth by mutual consent ARSENAL – MIDFIELDER With William Saliba joining up with the Gunners squad for the first time since his impressive loan spell at Saint-Etienne, it seems there is now a defender to genuinely be excited about at the Emirates. And although another is definitely needed, Arsenal should now be prioritising a move for an attacking midfielder to replace the out-of-favour Mesut Ozil. Philippe Coutinho has been linked with a loan move but he seems to have lost his magic touch and Mikel Arteta should go all out to sign Dominik Szoboszlai from Red Bull Salzburg. The Hungarian midfielder has had an excellent campaign, having scored nine goals and added 10 assists in 27 league appearances. He has a release clause of just £22million which would make him a viable option for the club. Szoboszlai has been a long-term target of Arsenal and he is available on the cheapAFP or licensorsASTON VILLA – STRIKER Their struggles at the top of the pitch has been clear for all to see this season so a proven goalscorer simply must be a priority this summer. Dean Smith should look no further than former marksman Tammy Abraham. The Chelsea ace had a great league campaign in 2019/20, finding the net 15 times, but became a bit-part player at the end of the season due to the red-hot form of Olivier Giroud. What’s more, the arrival of Werner at Chelsea could see his game time limited even more so perhaps a loan move back to Villa would be a no-brainer for both parties. Villa should go all out to sign Abraham on loan this summerBRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION – MIDFIELDER Graham Potter has been praised for keeping the Seagulls up whilst playing an expansive brand of football this campaign, but he will know there must be additions if he is to keep his side in the Premier League next season. A new defensive midfielder is a must and Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure would be a great option, though he won’t come cheap. If not, Huddersfield’s Jonathan Hogg could be a handy acquisition as he is good on the ball and could work well with former teammate Aaron Mooy. Doucoure is a workhorse in Watford’s midfield and he will now be a wanted manGettyBURNLEY – WINGER Speculation has been rife about the future of Sean Dyche, who has so far refused to rule out leaving Turf Moor this summer. The Clarets will barely have any money to spend this summer, but if they do find any cash they need to sign a new wide man. Johann Berg Gudmundsson has barely featured this term due to a string of injury setbacks while Dwight McNeil and Ashley Barnes need more help in the final third. Perhaps a deal for Watford’s Gerard Deulofeu could be a smart acquisition. Like Doucoure, Deulofeu will be a wanted man now that Watford have been relegatedCHELSEA – GOALKEEPER A left-back will almost certainly be signed this summer but right now a replacement for Kepa Arrizabalaga will be a priority for Lampard. The Spaniard has kept just eight clean sheets in the Premier League in 2019/20 and just ONE clean sheet away from home all season. Perhaps the most realistic target is a deal for Burnley’s Nick Pope, who has made 83 appearances in all competitions for the Clarets since joining from Charlton in 2016. The 28-year-old has been a standout performer in Sean Dyche’s XI ever since he replaced now-Aston Villa ace Tom Heaton. Pope kept 15 clean sheets this seasonAFP or licensorsCRYSTAL PALACE – WINGER Ryan Fraser has left Bournemouth after seven years on the south coast and he represents a ready-made replacement for Wilfried Zaha, whose time with the Eagles may come to an end this window. Fraser has undeniable talent and although he’s not been at his best this season, he would suit the Eagles’ counter-attacking style well. However, some bigger clubs in the division may well swoop in for the Scot, who has plenty of years ahead of him in the Premier League at the age of 26. Zaha is a fan favourite at Selhurst Park but he may not be at his boyhood club next seasonGetty Images - GettyEVERTON – WINGER Alex Iwobi and Theo Walcott have both struggled for the Toffees since moving from Arsenal, and Bernard, despite impressing in bursts, has also lacked consistency. Therefore, a young and direct winger should be targeted this summer and Ismaila Sarr from Watford fits the bill. The Senegal forward impressed against Liverpool and Arsenal this season and has been a standout player for the Hornets in their disappointing relegation to the Championship this season. He is a constant threat on the counter attack and already has plenty of admirers in the top-flight following Watford’s fall into the second tier. Sarr could seek a Watford exit now they are relegated to the ChampionshipAFP or licensorsLEEDS – STRIKER Canada international Jonathan David looks certain to be heading for a new club this summer and Elland Road could be his new destination. The Gent striker scored 18 goals, with eight assists, in just 27 games in the Belgian league this season to put him on the radar of some of Europe’s top clubs. David is still only 20 and has enormous potential so his next move will be intriguing. The two clubs leading the race appear to be the Whites and Ligue 1 side Lille. It would be an enormous coup if Bielsa could snap him up. David has been on sublime form for Gent this seasonGetty ImagesLEICESTER CITY – WINGER The resumption of football couldn’t have gone much worse for the Foxes, but it’s still been a great season for Brendan Rodgers’ men. The need for more firepower is evident as that was clear from the absence of James Maddison in the last quarter of the season. Harvey Barnes has improved hugely this season and Ayoze Perez has been good in in parts, but another attacker to help Jamie Vardy up top needs to be brought in. Perhaps Leon Bailey from Bayer Leverkusen would be a good signing for Leicester. The Jamaican, who has been linked with Chelsea in the past, is direct, quick and has a good goal-scoring record in the Bundesliga. Bailey, 22, has a good goal-scoring record in the BundesligagettyLIVERPOOL – LEFT-BACK James Milner has been a superb deputy for Andy Robertson when the Scot has been sidelined, but injuries are slowly starting to catch up with the veteran midfielder. A back-up for Robertson is needed and Jurgen Klopp should consider a move Norwich’s Jamal Lewis Lewis, who plays internationally for Northern Ireland, is well accustomed to the rigours of Premier League football, making him a very attractive option indeed. Lewis could be on the move this summer and several top clubs may be interestedGetty Images - GettyMANCHESTER CITY – CENTRE-BACK Pep Guardiola has spent an astonishing amount of money on defenders since he has been at the Etihad, but has remarkably never had a solid back four. However, Nathan Ake is set to seal a £41m move from Bournemouth in the coming days. City have also identified their replacement for Leroy Sane, with Ferran Torres set to join from Valencia, and other rumours have suggested that another centre-back could be signed. Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly, who has been linked with a move to England for several years, is said to be the next man on Guardiola’s wish-list. He fits the bill for the type of defender the Spaniard wants, with excellent distribution and an aerial presence to match. Kalidou Koulibaly is still one of the highest rated centre-backs in EuropeGetty Images - GettyMANCHESTER UNITED – WINGER The Red Devils seem to have finally cemented a solid back four after years of disarray, and now their focus must be on adding strength in depth in midfield. Another attacking midfielder – namely Jack Grealish – has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, but a move for an out-and-out winger is a must and Jadon Sancho could be man to take the iconic no.7 shirt. The Borussia Dortmund ace had a blistering Bundesliga campaign, hitting 17 goals and the same amount of assists this season. A deal for the England ace looks to be edging closer by the day. Sancho is a long-term target for Man United and a deal could be finalised soonAFPNEWCASTLE UNITED – STRIKER Joelinton has had a torrid first season at St James’ Park but by his own admission he isn’t an out and out striker and prefers playing out wide. Therefore, Steve Bruce should give him a run-out on the wing and sign a goal-getter who actually knows how to put the ball in the back of the net. Troy Deeney is Premier League proven and could be a great option, but if that fails, a move for former striker Aleksandar Mitrovic could be smart – though that will depend on whether Fulham are promoted. Deeney could be a good option for Newcastle now that Watford are downGETTYSHEFFIELD UNITED – GOALKEEPER There has been a lot of speculation regarding the future of Dean Henderson, who is currently on loan at Bramall Lane. Manchester United could make him their new no.1 in place of David de Gea next season as the Spaniard has struggled for form throughout the campaign. Other reports have claimed Chelsea could also make a bid for the 23-year-old, who has been a standout performer for the Blades on their return to the Premier League. Aaron Ramsdale has been touted as a possible replacement for Henderson should the England stopper return to Manchester United. It is believed the Cherries will demand around £11m for their glovesman. Ramsdale is a reported target for Sheffield United this summerGETTYSOUTHAMPTON – CENTRE-BACK Saints had a brilliant turnaround following their 9-0 drubbing at the hands of Southampton, but they have still shipped in a disappointing 59 goals in the Premier League season. That is more than any team not directly involved in the relegation battle since lockdown and Ralph Hasenhuttl is in the market for at least two new centre-halves. Valladolid’s Mohammad Salisu, who has a £10.9m release clause, is said to be one his main targets in the market. Real Valladolid defender Salisu is a reported target for Southampton this summerGETTY IMAGESTOTTENHAM HOTSPUR – LEFT-BACK Spurs need to strengthen in several positions, including in midfield and on the wings, but their need for new full-backs is the biggest necessity. Japhet Tanganga had to fill in as a makeshift right-back earlier this season when Serge Aurier was suspended, whilst Danny Rose was loaned to Newcastle and will probably stay there permanently. A cheap option for Jose Mourinho could Ajax left-back Nicolas Tagliafico. The 27-year-old has been a standout performer for the Dutch club over the last two seasons and would reportedly be available for £20m. The Argentine provided five goals and five assists for Ajax in all competitions in 2019/20 and back in May, his agent admitted that the left-back would be looking for a new club in the summer. Tagliafico could be a cheap full-back option for MourinhoWEST BROMWICH ALBION – ATTACKING MIDFIELDER Slaven Bilic has done a brilliant job to get the Baggies back in the big time but they need signings or they could go straight back down. One player who should be high up on his wish-list should be QPR’s playmaker Ebere Eze. The 22-year-old has racked up 14 goals and eight assists in 46 Championship outings for Rangers this season. West Ham, Aston Villa and Newcastle are also said to be considering a move. Eze is a target for a host of Premier League clubsGetty Images - GettyWEST HAM UNITED – STRIKER The form of Michail Antonio and Tomas Soucek undoubtedly saved West Ham’s season and perhaps showed that the flashier signings such as Sebastien Haller and Felipe Anderson shouldn’t be relied on. A striker needs to be brought in to partner Antonio and West Ham should go all out for Brentford ace Ollie Watkins, who has been brilliant this season with 25 goals in the second tier. If Brentford are promoted through the play-offs, a deal for the 24-year-old would be unlikely, however. Watkins netted 25 goals in the Championship this seasonGetty Images - GettyWOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS – CENTRE-BACK Ryan Bennett is set to return from Leicester after failing to make an impact at the King Power Stadium, but he may not play a further part for the club with Roman Saiss cementing himself as the third centre-back behind Conor Coady and Willy Boly. Nevertheless, Nuno Espirito Santo will need another centre-back and who better to add than Jan Vertonghen? He’s as experienced as they come and would do enormous things for the club’s squad depth, as well as provide fresh competition for any one of the centre-backs who has a dip in form. It would be a great signing if they managed it, but a host of top European clubs are circling on the Belgian. Vertonghen has left Tottenham after almost a decade with the clubGetty Images - Getty #PremierLeague #CrystalPalace #ManchesterCity

Connected enterprise
Why Enterprise City UK is important for all of Manchester, not just the creative entrepreneurs who will make it their base.
Tumblr media
Roundtable discussion at the launch of Enterprise City UK at Old Granada Studios, Manchester, 26 April
On Monday last week, the Washington Post carried a headline that read: “This guy convinced cities to cater to tech-savvy millennials. Now he’s reconsidering.”
The article was about one of the fathers of design thinking for cities, Richard Florida, whose book The Rise of the Creative Class influenced the development of creative and tech hubs in cities all over the world.
In his book, Florida had argued that cities in the automated digital world should attract the best young talent in computer programming, engineering, finance, media and the arts so they could grow their economies based on the venture capital and start-up companies the new workforce would produce.
So what was the Washington Post article about? Richard Florida hasn’t suddenly gone anti-tech or anti-city. But he does highlight some things for us to think about. What he came to realise was that there were unintended side-effects. “In places like New York, San Francisco and Seattle,” the article pointed out, “the mostly white, young and wealthy “creative class” has so fervently flocked to urban neighbourhoods that they have effectively pushed out huge populations of mostly blue-collar and often poor or minority residents.”
Tumblr media
Zoë Hitchen at Design Manchester’s Great Debate in October 2016: how do we keep the city accessible for new talent?
In other words, their success made their neighbourhoods so expensive that diverse, mixed communities – and poor young artists for that matter – could no longer afford to live or work there. That’s also true of parts of London today and in the Design Manchester public debate that took place in the Bonded Warehouse at St John’s last October, Zoë Hitchen of the BBC User Experience team and the Manchester Fashion Institute raised the same concern for Manchester: how do we keep it diverse and affordable as we become even more successful? At our Great Debate a year earlier at The Whitworth, the architect Dominic Sagar, one of the founders of the Northern Quarter, had made a similar point. Investment in the city is welcome, he said, but “we don't want to become Brandchester or Blandchester and have our spirit squashed.”
In his new book, The Roots of the New Urban Crisis,  Richard Florida now says that the clustering of talent and economic assets “generates a lopsided, unequal urbanism in which a relative handful of superstar cities, and a few elite neighbourhoods within them, benefit while many other places stagnate or fall behind.
“Ultimately,” he adds, “the very same force that drives the growth of our cities and economy, also generates the divides that separate us and the contradictions that hold us back.” Florida blames Brexit and Trump on such growing divides.
The rise of the creative class – not the book, but the trend – has delivered rapid growth and progress, but also problems of division.
So what is the answer?
It is to design balanced cities and a balanced economy that offers opportunity, prosperity and safety for all.
The trick is to boom and yet remain diverse, inclusive, open and connected, with affordable housing, good education and a safe public environment, so that the city can continue to attract people, families, business and investment.
The trick is to make sure we have not only a vibrant neighbourhood but a vibrant city and a vibrant region. Developing exclusive, unaffordable bastions is not the strategic vision of the city or the region. In theory at least, the Northern Powerhouse, with its balanced economy thinking, is intended to deliver a more well-rounded and inclusive outcome.
Enterprise City is a catalyst in a bigger picture. It can help to build the pathways and foster the wider collaboration with people and startups and networks throughout the region that are essential to the success of Manchester as a whole.
Enterprise is creating things and making a success of it, so as a concept, Enterprise City is very well suited to a city where talent and industry are as abundant as they are here in Manchester.
Design has a big part to play, because it is at the heart of creative endeavour.
Design is how we connect technology to its users. It is how we make a city work for its residents and visitors. We use design to turn scientific inventions such as graphene into usable products. We design great spaces – and if spaces aren’t great, it’s because they’ve not been well-designed.
Through clothing and graphics and cars and furniture and gadgets – and trainers, design allows people to express their own style and individuality. Design helps people understand information and it helps them to communicate with one another.
Design is the human factor in technology, in enterprise and in cities, because the purpose of design is to think about the user and to provide for the user.
The icons of the digital age – Google and Apple and Facebook – have demonstrated time and again that successful digital enterprise has design at the heart of its thinking and its practice – not only in their products but also in their workspaces and in the cities and districts where they choose to locate their offices.
Tumblr media
In a digital world, design is the human factor that is the key to success. One of the reasons for Manchester’s great potential as a city is what Council Leader Sir Richard Leese in Document 16 called “the centrality of design to the Manchester story”.
Tumblr media
The 2017 Design Manchester Conference will take place at The Principal on 13 October
We established Design Manchester in 2013 and from 11–22 October this year we will be holding Manchester’s fifth annual design festival. Our Design Conference, at the Principal Hotel on 13 October, is where design professionals and students can listen to some of the greatest designers from Manchester and around the world, showing some of the best and the latest in design. Our Great Debate, which took place here in the Bonded Warehouse last year, will this year be on the opening night, 11 October, with leading figures from design, the city and politics on the panel and a very well informed and opinionated audience as usual. The Design and Print Fair that took place at London Road Fire Station last year will be at Upper Campfield Market from the 20–22 October, with stalls and workshops for families and the general public. And there will be more than 30 other events including music and exhibitions, workshops, symposia and film screenings, at iconic locations throughout the city.
When we started Design Manchester, we always felt that this is a city that can sustain an annual design festival and so far we haven’t been proved wrong. We did not have to invent anything, the culture was here, the art schools are here, the industry was growing quickly. We were of course standing on the shoulders of Tony Wilson and his In The City festival  – but he was doing it to attract the music industry to Manchester. These are the reasons that Enterprise City will succeed: firstly because the culture and the talent are here, and secondly because this will help attract different skillsets and finance into the mix.
Tumblr media
Green and healthy: Sean Anstee and Andy Burnham make their pitch
Labour’s Mayoral candidate for Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, talks about a “digital city” and a “green city”. His Tory opponent on 4th May, Trafford Council Leader Sean Anstee, talks about a “cycle-friendly city” and a “healthy city”.
We need to look behind the labels and think about how these ideas are going to achieve their aims. The Bonded Warehouse is a great space, built during the industrial revolution – and now all about innovation. For Enterprise City, is it about spaces like this? We love buildings, buildings are important, but a modern city is not primarily about buildings, or roads, but about networks. Future cities are about people, about how they connect, interact and transact.
Enterprise City knows this. As Mike Ingall said last year, Enterprise City “is about creating so much more than just buildings. It is about providing infrastructure and inspiration so businesses can realise their full potential.”
There are many other great creative spaces and neighbourhoods in Manchester, some old and some brand new, that are all about looking to the future.
Tumblr media
The XYZ Building (Cartwright Pickard)
In Spinningfields there’s the amazing XYZ building, also part of the Enterprise City initiative, with its fintech hub and great events, designed by Cartwright Pickard. There is The Sharp Project, a disused old electronics factory, transformed by PRP Architects into a digital content hub with more than sixty companies making it their home – and of course with a great brand and wayfinding by Malcolm Garrett. There’s the BDP-designed Innovation Centre in Manchester Science Park, part of Cisco’s National Virtual Incubator.
Tumblr media
The Pilcrow (OH OK! LTD)
There’s the Pilcrow Pub and the new PLANT maker-culture workshops and exhibition space at NOMA created by OH OK! and co-designed with the local community. There’s the new Circle Square being built on Oxford Road; and Manchester Metropolitan University, which has its great digital innovation centre at The Shed, will soon be launching its new International Screen School.
Then of course there’s the Northern Quarter, still edgy and still vibrant — and even the tram stops on St Peter’s Square are becoming usable again.
There is a huge amount going on in the city centre and there are great examples in the wider city region too, from Media City at one end of the scale in Salford to the artist studios in Islington Mill at the other, and great new regeneration projects like Oldham Town Hall and Tameside Mill.
Tumblr media
Oldham Town Hall (BDP)
We should look for productive ways of building collaborations between these hubs and spaces and the people and businesses in them to provide a wider range of talent and expertise into what we produce and to build better opportunities for, and supplies of, the talent that we need for our industry and our city to grow.
In Manchester, the Creative & Digital sector is one of the fastest growing drivers of the economy. And across all sectors, of all the economic success stories in the last five years, 87% had ten or fewer employees and were established for between three to five years. (New Economy) So, the biggest engine of growth in Manchester is (1) creative and digital, and (2) new startups.
Creative Review reports in its May issue that more than half of the respondents to its Creative Workplaces Survey identify themselves as being part of the ‘design industry’.
The supply of talent to this engine of growth is one of the big challenges we face. If the outcome of Brexit is that in three years’ time the door closes to recruiting new talent from southern and eastern Europe, that will be a critical problem for the tech industry which could result in a massive talent drain to London, which will certainly spend to attract talent from elsewhere in the UK. We may be growing quickly, but according to Tech City UK, the tech sector in London has more than 300,000 digital jobs currently, and that’s expected to rise by nearly 20% in the next decade.  Manchester currently has 63,000 digital jobs. We are in a good position but there is no room for complacency.
This is just one of the reasons why Enterprise City, as part of a holistic strategy for Manchester, is important. To maintain our momentum we need in the next couple of years to significantly increase the number of skilled and talented people who see Manchester as the best option to make their careers: a liveable and affordable city where talent and ingenuity can succeed as well as, and in some respects better, than elsewhere. We do that with infrastructure, policy and narrative, and Enterprise City feeds into all three.
In short, Enterprise City is a great opportunity for creative and entrepreneurial talent, not as the privileged zone separated from less advantaged parts of the city that Richard Florida refers to as the “new urban crisis”, but as a collaborative and open catalyst for growth, with mechanisms to ensure it is connected with other initiatives across the region and with opportunities for continued participation in the mix by new talent, new artists and entrepreneurs – not as employees but as startups and individuals who can’t yet afford high rents but will offer a continued edge of disruption, new thinking and unexpected opportunity. In this context, Project Forward is a fantastic asset for Enterprise City, promising a steady supply and incubation of talent in the creative digital area.
Design can help by supporting incubation and by looking at how Enterprise City is connected to the wider region – and to the food chain that takes raw talent to successful enterprise.
The City, the new Mayor and the Government can support a holistic approach by addressing the barriers to entry, for example by encouraging and supporting more women and diverse communities into the creative & digital sector, by ensuring that creativity, including art and design, are given priority alongside STEM subjects in education and particularly in skills training so that the creative industries have access to the right skills to grow and so that young talent in the area can develop careers that are not going to disappear in the coming wave of automation and artificial intelligence.
The Creative Industries Federation published an excellent creative industries manifesto for the general election yesterday which describes creative employment as resistant to automation and demands that to be eligible for an Ofsted Outstanding rating, a school must teach at least one creative subject, in lesson time.
We should develop mentoring and support programmes within Project Forward and Enterprise City –  to inject and support design thinking in the emerging startups,  and to develop sector–specific design skills in growth areas such as fintech, cybersecurity, fashion, textiles, screen and many other areas. As Design Manchester we will be keen to help connect Enterprise City to the wider design community in Manchester for mutual benefit, and so that we can all collaborate together to embed design thinking throughout our city.
We practise what we preach, working with our partners the Co-op on schools programmes for creative careers, and with universities and industry on opportunities and pathways. At our festival in October – in addition to the Conference, the Debate and the Design Fair – we will have a wide range of workshops and symposia for different audiences, from architects and professional designers to kids who want to learn coding and design, and sessions on age-friendly design, print techniques and much else besides.
Design, partnership, collaboration, connection and inclusion are key to the region’s success. This is why Design Manchester welcomes this visionary Enterprise City project and we look forward to collaborating with it in the coming years.

Chelsea news: Wolves backed to beat Lampard’s side because weakness leave them ‘vulnerble’ | Football | Sport
The Blues have won just one game so far this season in what has been a tough start to life in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat for Frank Lampard.
Things ended in frustrating fashion before the international break as Sheffield United salvaged a 2-2 draw after being 2-0 down.
The performance highlighted that Chelsea are struggling to remain compact in defence, which needs to be addressed if they are to seriously challenge for the top four.
Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas believes Wolves will fancy their chances against the Blues this weekend, due to their fragility at the back.
“Wolves do well against the big teams,” the former Arsenal man wrote in his Sky Sports column.
“Tammy Abraham has been in form and Mason Mount has been spectacularly good.
“Chelsea are still vulnerable at the back and will be threatened by Diogo Jota and Raul Jimenez up front.
“I see Wolves beating Chelsea this weekend, and Wolves are the team, as many people that are talking about Leicester, that could definitely override the top-six trend.”
Wolves had joy against Maurizio Sarri’s side last season, taking four points which included a 2-1 win at Molineux last December.
Chelsea have leaked nine goals in four Premier League matches so far this term, averaging 2.25 per match.
That started when they shedded four goals at Old Trafford against Manchester United on the opening day of the season.
Things improved at home to Leicester in the 1-1 draw in west London before the Blues picked up their only win of the season at Norwich.
Even then, Chelsea huffed and puffed, edging the game 3-2 in a match which suggested they will have to simply outscore teams this season to win matches because of their leaky backline.
Luckily for Lampard, Wolves are yet to get going so far this season after suffering from the constraints of Europa League football.
They have not won a match in the Premier League, recording three draws before losing 3-2 to Everton at Goodison Park.

MARTIN SAMUEL: Derby County and Wayne Rooney are just playing the game… so lay off
Jermaine Jenas started his new job as columnist for the daily newspaper this week. He was revealed thanks to a deal with footie5 from thepools.com.
& # 39; Download the app and play … & # 39; said a mistake at the bottom of the page. So we can't have it in all ways. Wayne Rooney Wayne Rooney Does it, but a legitimate source of income on this page and beyond.
Must, that's what it's all about. The media – print and electronic, websites, radio stations, television broadcasters and also this publication – will not reject valuable advertising at a time when rates and revenues are falling.
Wayne Rooney & # 39; s move to Derby County has been criticized for moving the way it occurred
And Derby is going to find a way to recruit and reward Rooney that allows them to bypass the Football League's tax on ambition, in the form of financial fair play regulations.
It is not only, as said, that Derby Rooney could not pay without sponsoring a gambling company; they would not have allowed Rooney either.
Buying him, paying him the usual rate given his talent and profile, could lead to an FFP infringement and a crippling fine. However, if the sponsors of Derby, 32Red, open the tab, it's different. Every club in the championship with an eye for promotion will look at ways to bypass the system.
Derby did that before. Last season they were threatened with legal action by Middlesbrough president Steve Gibson Mel Morris bought the Pride Park stadium and then rented it back to the club.
This enabled Derby to post £ 14.6 million profit on their accounts. Challenged, Morris pointed out that the sale of fixed assets is legal and that in 2016, in order to comply with FFP, the club chose to sell the football club's tax loss to its parent company, thereby generating income. This too was cool at the time. That club was Middlesbrough.
So everyone is working on it. Not in a way that is crooked or illegal, they do it because running a business often requires investment from the owner and promotion as well, but the Football League are not friends for clubs that think big.
Rooney participates on the side of Phillip Cocu and takes on a player-coach dual role at the club
They have numerous rules to prevent owners from jumping up, not so much to guard against those bleeding dry clubs. Now the Rooney deal has shed an unhelpful light on a different revenue stream.
Tim Crow, an expert in sports marketing, says gambling ads on shirts will be banned within five years. So the League Pass rules the prohibition of one form of investment and the Government Pass rules the prohibition of another.
From this season on, 30 clubs have gambling companies as their primary sponsor source and, since the market is competitive, exposure rate is undoubtedly high. If that is forbidden, other sponsors may not feel compelled to pay that much.
Morris is not the perfect owner, but he has ambition for Derby. He gave Frank Lampard the job of the manager last season – a smart, forward-thinking idea that almost raised Derby's profile and almost paid off with promotion – and made another splash by signing Rooney as a player-coach since January.
There is no guarantee that Rooney will have an impact from Midfield in the championship, which is of a higher standard for Major League Soccer.
But no matter how he makes a player, Rooney is the coach a fascinating proposition. He has long been an undervalued game analyst and has ambitions to manage.
Sir Alex Ferguson recalls that he tried to guess the first XI on the eve of competitions and often got some nuance or tactical change correctly.
Rooney will make the move in January when his MLS season with DC United comes to an end
Roy Hodgson often praised his interventions with England, even as Rooney & # 39; s growing confidence in his unilateral decision to remove Harry Kane from middle service .
Rooney & # 39; s return to English football would have garnered almost universal praise, were not for the involvement of 32Red.
Instead, critics stood in line. The mediocre spirit of Iain Duncan-Smith spoke contemptuously about the amount of money gambling companies made, undoubtedly as part of the new corporate strategy of the conservative party under Boris Johnson.
Carolyn Harris, Chairman of the Parliamentary Gambling Group, asked: & When will celebrities realize that involvement in gambling is not right or moral? & # 39; as if the famous, not the governments, were responsible for Britain's lax gambling laws.
Clinical psychologists and academics and anti-gambling campaigners – and victims of addiction – are all confused with disapproval of what a sponsorship agreement has been made necessary by the over-regulation of football.
Yet, the reason that every newspaper now has a special pull-out in the week of the Cheltenham Festival is the placement of advertisements for gambling.
It is tempting to bet, odds, and prizes that fund it all. For example, transfer deadline for daily news on many newspaper websites was sponsored by Betway.
So even if Rooney didn't wear No. 32, the paying company would still find an outlet for their product – most likely on the pages of the publications in which the Derby deal becomes convicted.
Boron also happens to have the same sponsor "class =" blkBorder img-share "/>
[1945908] Middlesbrough (left), Leeds (right) and Preston are also sponsored by 32Red like Derby County
Nobody claims that the modern shift in gambling habits – watching sports with gambling on it, via in-play- apps – is healthy. Yet it is a major simplification to hope for the problems of the industry on one player and his club.
& # 39; We see players' names becoming synonymous with gambling brands & # 39 ;, said shadow minister Rosena Allin-Khan.
No, we are not. There are too many gambling companies to remember them all and most football fans would not know their Dunder from their Dafabet, their 32Red from their Fun88.
It is a hugely successful but flooded market, so Rooney will become synonymous with his club, Derby, as always, and the most publicity his sponsors will get out of this deal is now, with so much pontification that the makes headlines.
Interestingly enough, however, after last season's friction, there is a very subdued reaction to Derby's rival of their championship rivals.
Perhaps because Middlesbrough, Leeds and Preston are also sponsored by 32Red, while Birmingham, Blackburn, Bristol City, Charlton, Fulham, Huddersfield, Hull, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke, Swansea and Wigan also have gambling companies as shirt sponsors and kick themselves for not thinking about it first
Woodward earns credit for the hard sale of misleading Lukak u
As usual, the transfer window with fans of Manchester United ended up in arms over Ed Woodward. Still, the £ 72 million from Inter Milan was a decent thing for Romelu Lukaku. The Italians wanted to pay nearly £ 20 million less, but United persisted – and the impact of Lukaku on Old Trafford was so overwhelming that they could even make a profit.
Part of Lukaku & # 39; s deal upon joining Everton was that United would have to pay £ 5 million each time if he has scored 25 league goals in his first three seasons, so with a total of 16, 12 and a day for everyone, that has already saved £ 15 million.
[1945908] Romelu Lukaku finally got his move on deadline day, with Man United set to receive £ 72m
The reality is that Lukaku arrived with the reputation of being destroyed against smaller clubs and left intact.
In his time with United, he scored goals against West Ham, Swansea, Stoke, Everton, Southampton, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Bournemouth, West Brom, Huddersfield, Brighton, Burnley, Watford and Fulham, but pulled blank spots Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal. The only top-six club he found against was Chelsea on February 25, 2018.
This does not only apply to his club form. In the World Cup year, he scored against Greece, Gibraltar, Cyprus, Costa Rica, Panama and Tunisia, but not against Japan, Brazil, France or England. His movements suggest that he is a big club player – but not necessarily against big clubs. Woodward did well to come back.
Open Relaxation Therapy
Hinako Shibuno & # 39; s Women & # 39; s Open was the perfect example of why it is sometimes better to relax in a tournament
Shibuno admitted that he came to Britain to taste the food and see the sights, instead of having any ambition to win the tournament.
Hinako Shibuno admitted he came to Britain to taste the food and see the sights
She was so under-prepared that she thought she would play a left lane instead of Woburn, about 160 miles inland. Her manager, Hiroshi Shigematsu, also seemed to be doing very well – costumed in the course every day.
On Friday he went to Mount Fuji, on Saturday in a kimono with an electric blue clown wig and plastic Samurai sword. On other occasions he dragged a supporting cast of hugs. Maybe Trevor Bayliss should try.
Moeen needs rest, but Smith is not afraid of Leach
Everyone agrees that Moeen Ali needs a break from the pressure of international cricket.
In the past, the time away from the English scene has led to a recovery in its form. Certainly, his appearance at Edgbaston approached a call for help.
But while leaving him out of the Lord's mind seems inevitable, the assumption that Jack Leach's answer is dramatically overplayed. In the past month, Leach threw waste three times for 26 points against Ireland. The call for his selection is largely based on the idea that Steve Smith is weak against the orthodox spider left
England's performance at Moeen Ali in Edgbaston was approaching a call for help
This idea grew in South Africa last year when three of Smith & # 39; s first four were fired for Keshav Maharaj and Dean Elgar.
Smith takes an average of 34.9 against orthodox bowlers on the left, as opposed to 48.77 against leg spinners, 65.28 against fast bowlers on the left, 68.38 against fast right bowlers, 92.85 against off-spinners and 119 against left-wrist spinners
Still a large number of his layoffs against left-arm orthodox supplies are against Rangana Herath and Ravindra in Sri Lanka Jadeja on tours of the subcontinent. Leach will not only have to bow much better than Ali, he will also have to bow considerably better than with the last time of the Lord.
Smith is vulnerable to good leftists, not cake holders.
Why save Bury after £ 4million blunder?
The day of the transfer limit reached its peak when the Football League was announced that Bury & # 39; s Carabao Cup match with Sheffield Wednesday was out.
Under the circumstances, it is easy to make comparisons between football matches and equipment; the fraction of the transfer costs of Harry Maguire who would keep the football 10 miles away. How much leaked out of the game to agents when Bury and Bolton were dying.
United still paid the excessive rate for a sought-after center half, or an agent who insured his compensation for a complex sequence of transfers, is not the reason why Bury is struggling. They spent money that they did not have to pay for a promotion that they could not afford.
Bury misunderstood it terribly. That is the story of football through time. Clubs rise and fall due to good and bad decisions. These decisions are made in the field, by managers and coaches or in the boardroom.
Bury spent money they didn't have the financing they couldn't
The gradual decline of Huddersfield from a club that won three straight titles between 1924 and 1927 can be deduced from the decision to buy a second-hand stand from Fleetwood for £ 170, at a moment that Arsenal invested many thousands of infrastructure. There are a hundred minor appraisal errors that have put Bury at risk – and they were made long before Maguire left Leicester for £ 80 million.
Nigel Clough said the Premier League was responsible for wrestling in the lower division clubs, but how would that work? Bury spent while other clubs did not. Bury won promotion due to £ 4.2 million in debt while other clubs kept the budget and remained in League Two. And now that Bury receives a Premier League rescue fund? Does that not reward financial carelessness?
Dodi Lukebakio left Watford for Hertha Berlin in a deal of nearly £ 20 million, arrived for £ 1.5 million and played 17 minutes of soccer from the first team. This seems like madness. Yet elite clubs are moving into a completely different market. The amounts of Bury are correct, not their business activities to ensure that Bury is managed correctly. Bury has two weeks to solve this problem, and the answer must come from within.
A number of Chelsea fans are saddened by the departure of David Luiz to Arsenal. They miss the bigger picture.
Think about it. This is now a defense with Luiz and Shkodran Mustafi in his heart, protected by Granit Xhaka.
It is time to take a seat, to break open the popcorn and to start the comedy.
David Luiz signed for Arsenal on deadline day but it remains to be seen whether it will be the answer

Lawro
There is only one relegation place to be selected the ultimate day of the Premier League season, with Swansea needing a minor miracle to outlive on the expense of Southampton.
Can the Welsh aspect pull it off? BBC Sport’s soccer professional Mark Lawrenson thinks not, saying: “I anticipate Swansea to beat Stoke, however not by anyplace close to sufficient for them to remain up.
“For Southampton to be relegated now, they must lose to Manchester Metropolis whereas Swansea win, and with a nine-goal swing in aim distinction – which isn’t going to occur.”
Lawro is making predictions for all 380 top-flight video games this season, in opposition to a wide range of friends.
His closing visitor of the 2017-18 marketing campaign is England netball head coach Tracey Neville.
Tracey, who steered England to gold at the last month’s Commonwealth Games, is the youthful sister of former England defender and coach Gary Neville, and the dual of England ladies’s soccer head coach Phil.
England stun Australia to win netball gold with last-gasp aim
Tracey grew up supporting the group that each her brothers performed for – Manchester United.
“It’s United all the best way for me – they’re true to my coronary heart,” she instructed BBC Sport. “I do nonetheless have a season ticket at Outdated Trafford however I do not really get out to look at them as of late – I’m most likely extra of a social supporter.”
Her favorite second as a United fan is a sport each her brothers had been concerned in – their last-gasp win within the 1999 Champions League closing, when Gary performed in opposition to Bayern Munich on the Nou Camp and Phil was on the bench.
“It is bought to be Barcelona, hasn’t it?” Neville mentioned. “It’s bizarre that it occurred in the identical approach that my second occurred on the Commonwealth Video games, getting back from behind to triumph within the final seconds.
“I simply bear in mind being away on tour with the England netball group as a participant, sat watching it in my lodge room at about 4am.
“My room-mate was within the mattress subsequent to mine and, when United’s winner went in, I simply bear in mind placing my pillow to my mouth and actually screaming into it so I did not wake her up.”
Premier League predictions – week 38 End result Lawro Tracey SUNDAY Burnley v Bournemouth x-x 2-1 0-0 Crystal Palace v West Brom x-x 1-2 0-1 Huddersfield v Arsenal x-x 1-1 0-2 Liverpool v Brighton x-x 2-0 1-2 Man Utd v Watford x-x 2-0 2-0 Newcastle v Chelsea x-x 0-2 2-1 Southampton v Man Metropolis x-x 0-2 0-4 Swansea v Stoke x-x 2-0 1-2 Tottenham v Leicester x-x 2-0 1-0 West Ham v Everton x-x 2-0 0-0
An accurate consequence (choosing a win, draw or defeat) is value 10 factors. The precise rating earns 40 factors.
LAWRO’S PREDICTIONS
All kick-offs 15:00 BST.
SUNDAY
Burnley v Bournemouth
Each of those groups have had good seasons. In truth, Burnley have had an excellent one.
The Clarets are in Europe already so this consequence does probably not matter, however they are going to need to finish such a profitable season on a excessive with a house win.
Fixed enchancment is hard – Howe
Bournemouth made a foul begin, shedding their first 4 video games, however after recovering from that, they’ve by no means significantly appeared like they’re in any actual relegation bother.
One other large optimistic for the Cherries is their potential to return again in video games, and so they attempt to play soccer as nicely, which can be a superb factor.
You do not get the sense that they begin the season considering that they only need to keep away from relegation any approach they will – their mantra appears to be extra alongside the strains of “let’s go and play”.
Compared, the Clarets aren’t essentially the most open group – they are often fairly useful – however I feel they are going to come out on prime on Sunday.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-1
Tracey’s prediction: Neither group has something to play for thus this could possibly be fairly a flat sport. 0-0
Crystal Palace v West Brom
After 5 video games of the season, West Brom had been 10th with two wins, two attracts and only one defeat, whereas Crystal Palace had been backside with zero factors. What a distinction there was of their outcomes since then.
What I like about Palace goes past the best way they’ve been coached and the best way their supervisor Roy Hodgson has bought outcomes. That has all been very spectacular, however their success can be all the way down to their followers.
Hodgson sympathises for relegated Stoke after Palace win
Once they play at Selhurst Park it’s actually intimidating. It’s all the time noisy and the environment is nice, and I do not suppose you’ll be able to say that about too many grounds within the Premier League.
Having mentioned all that, I’m going for a shock right here, as a result of I feel the Baggies will win.
Their type beneath caretaker supervisor Darren Moore has been very good and though they’ve been relegated since their final match, Saturday’s win over Spurs, I’m anticipating one other sturdy efficiency from them right here.
Lawro’s prediction: 1-2
Tracey’s prediction: West Brom are down however I nonetheless suppose they are going to need to placed on a superb efficiency for his or her caretaker supervisor Darren Moore. 0-1
Huddersfield v Arsenal
I didn’t see Huddersfield’s draw with Chelsea on Wednesday coming, identical as I didn’t anticipate them to get something at Manchester Metropolis on Sunday both.
These two factors in opposition to two of the highest 5 groups within the nation have gotten the Terriers to security, and I doff my cap to them as a result of I by no means fancied them to remain up from day one.
You’ll be able to see that from the league desk beneath primarily based on my predictions – and I do know Huddersfield followers have already observed that.
However that was as a result of I all the time thought they had been going to get relegated and didn’t suppose that they had sufficient to remain up.
Chelsea 1-1 Huddersfield: David Wagner say Terriers survival is ‘unbelievable achievement’
Within the final quarter of the season you might see them sinking into the abyss in order that they deserve immense credit score for turning that round and beating the drop.
I’m happy too, as a result of they’re what I might name a typical Championship group who bought promoted and have needed to combat very laborious to remain there. The supervisor, David Wagner, has performed a brilliant job.
As for Arsenal, am I stunned that they win 5-Zero at residence after which comply with that by shedding 3-1 at Leicester? No, in no way.
Arsene Wenger: I’ve obtained extra job provides than anticipated
The Gunners are nonetheless the one group within the prime 4 tiers of English soccer to not have earned a single level on the street in 2018, though I do suppose that can change on Sunday.
There isn’t any approach Huddersfield will play with the identical depth now they’re secure, and a extra open sport will go well with Arsene Wenger’s aspect in his closing sport in cost.
Lawro’s prediction: 1-1
Tracey’s prediction: It’s Wenger’s final sport so I feel Arsenal will do it for his or her supervisor. 0-2
Liverpool v Brighton
Liverpool’s superior aim distinction means they solely want a degree to make sure of ending above Chelsea and making the highest 4, and I feel the Reds will get the consequence they want.
Brighton secured their survival by beating Manchester United final Friday evening and they don’t seem to be combating for something anymore.
All three promoted groups – Newcastle, Huddersfield and the Seagulls – have stayed up and so they have fought laborious for it, as a result of all of three of them have barely scratched the highest half of the desk for the reason that finish of November.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Tracey’s prediction: Liverpool have come off a reasonably robust marketing campaign and I’m backing Brighton right here. 1-2
Man Utd v Watford
It has been a little bit of an odd season for Manchester United, however they’re going to end second and so they might win the FA Cup too.
Highlights: Man Utd 2-1 Tottenham
However Jose Mourinho’s enjoying type is clearly a serious downside for some United followers, and the opposite large difficulty is that they do not appear like they’re going to be anyplace close to Manchester Metropolis once more subsequent season both.
I’m anticipating United to win and move the 80-point mark, which has been sufficient to win the title in 4 seasons in the course of the Premier League period, however they by no means bought near Metropolis this yr.
In the meantime, it has been a troublesome marketing campaign for Watford and, though they’ve by no means actually been in peril of relegation, this could possibly be Javi Gracia’s final sport in command of the Hornets.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Tracey’s prediction: I’m clearly going for a United win right here. 2-0
There has positively been progress from United beneath Mourinho, when it comes to them being the place folks need to be, which bodes nicely for subsequent season.
I’ve performed various analysis into Mourinho’s strategies as a coach and, as a frontrunner myself in netball, I feel there are some issues he does which might be nice to remove. I’ve already performed that to implement them in my sport.
Newcastle v Chelsea
Chelsea have underachieved this season and I can not see Antonio Conte being in command of the Blues firstly of the subsequent marketing campaign.
Sadly for Newcastle followers, it isn’t clear whether or not Rafa Benitez will nonetheless be their supervisor by then both.
Tottenham 1-Zero Newcastle: We deserved extra – Benitez
Benitez has performed an incredible job and he might be glad if he will get some cash to spend within the switch market, so it’s a no-brainer to attempt to hold him, certainly.
Newcastle haven’t picked up one other level since they handed the 40-point mark a couple of weeks in the past. They’ve misplaced 4 video games in a row, however that does not matter as a result of it’s job performed – they’re secure.
I do not see the Magpies returning to successful methods on Sunday, both. It could be similar to Chelsea to place in a silky efficiency this week, however they haven’t performed that always sufficient this season.
Lawro’s prediction: 0-2
Tracey’s prediction: 2-1
Southampton v Man Metropolis
I’m anticipating Metropolis to win, however not by sufficient targets to ship Saints down.
Pep Guardiola’s aspect have damaged the data for many factors, most targets and most wins in a Premier League season, however he desires the champions to achieve 100 factors too.
Man Metropolis 3-1 Brighton: Pep Guardiola says Man Metropolis have virtually had the right season
I hope they do it, as a result of they deserve it – and I can not see anybody beating these data for a very long time.
The soccer Metropolis have performed has been elegant. Sure, the numbers are incredible however their type of play is what folks will bear in mind in years to return.
Lawro’s prediction: 0-2
Tracey’s prediction: I simply suppose Metropolis are too good in the mean time. 0-4
Swansea v Stoke
I anticipate Swansea to win, however not by anyplace close to sufficient for them to remain up. They are going to be becoming a member of Stoke within the Championship subsequent season.
Swans boss Carlos Carvalhal might be leaving on the finish of the season. He began nicely however they’ve gone eight video games with no win, and that’s the reason they’re again down on the backside finish of the desk.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Tracey’s prediction: Stoke have gotten loads to show following their relegation so I really suppose this might be an actual battle. I feel Swansea will take an early lead however Stoke will come again at them to win. 1-2
Tottenham v Leicester
Leicester are one other membership the place we have no idea whether or not the supervisor will keep in his job on the finish of the season.
There are 10 Premier League sides whose supervisor is both positively leaving, on a short-term contract that ends this summer season, or faces an unsure future due to poor outcomes or relegation: Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leicester, Southampton, Stoke, Swansea, Watford, West Brom and West Ham.
In the event you rely Newcastle supervisor Rafa Benitez, who might resolve he desires to go away if he’s not backed financially, and Huddersfield boss David Wagner, who’s being touted as a possible substitute for Foxes boss Claude Puel, then that determine is 12 managers who could possibly be leaving out of 20 top-flight golf equipment.
Puel happy for followers after ‘necessary efficiency’
That’s what the Premier League is like as of late, with such a excessive turnover of managers. It appears lots of golf equipment are making a choice virtually day-by-day – there is no such thing as a forward-thinking occurring.
If Puel must win to maintain his job, then I do not suppose that can occur.
I’m backing Tottenham to win, and Harry Kane to attain – he got a hat-trick on the final day of last season.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Tracey’s prediction: Spurs know they’re ending within the prime 4 and I feel they are going to log out for the season with a win. 1-0
West Ham v Everton
West Ham boss David Moyes and Everton supervisor Sam Allardyce are two of the managers I used to be speaking about above.
Each males have performed what was requested of them by preserving their sides up after being appointed in mid-season and, whereas Moyes will get a say in his future, it could possibly be that Everton resolve that Allardyce is surplus to necessities.
Everton want adjustments to enhance – Allardyce
It’s laborious to know what’s going on at Everton as a result of there are such a lot of blended messages popping out of Goodison Park. Allardyce seems adamant he’s staying for the ultimate yr of his contract, however I do not suppose many Toffees followers can be too glad if that occurs.
Will both of them be within the Premier League in August? Who is aware of. But when they don’t seem to be, I might not wager in opposition to them getting a job in September or October when a md presses the panic button.
By way of the sport, I’m going for Moyes to return out on prime in opposition to his former membership.
Lawro’s prediction: 2-0
Tracey’s prediction: I feel this might be one other flat sport. 0-0
Lawro was chatting with BBC Sport’s Chris Bevan.

From the rearranged midweek Premier League video games on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, Lawro bought three right outcomes, with no good scores, from six matches for a complete of 30 factors.

“He out-thought RB Leipzig after they gained 5-0 at Outdated Trafford and all the things appeared to be altering. The flipside to that’s, how on earth did these gamers beat Leipzig 5-0 after which put within the performances that we have seen during the last couple of video games?

2 beaten-down FTSE 100 stocks I’d buy right now
Shopping centre owner Intu Properties (LSE: INTU) found itself being relegated from London’s premier league FTSE 100 index earlier this year as a result of increased investor pessimism over the retail sector. But after shedding around a fifth of its value in just 12 months, could it be time for contrarians to step in and be greedy when others are fearful?
The £2.8bn property giant which owns many of the UK’s largest and most popular retail destinations, including Lakeside in Essex, Cribbs Causeway, and Manchester’s Arndale and Trafford Centre, has seen its share price in steady decline since early 2015, when it was trading as high as 376p. Today the shares can be picked up at a heavily discounted price of around 200p per share.
Protection from the taxman
For the past 10 years Intu has operated as a real estate investment trust (REIT) which means it enjoys a measure of protection from corporation tax in return for an obligation to distribute a significant amount of cash flows to shareholders.
As a REIT, Intu doesn’t pay UK direct taxes on the income and capital gains from its qualifying UK property rental business, with one requirement of this regime being that it must distribute at least 90% of taxable profits from the rental business to shareholders each year. That’s great news for dividend chasers.
The share price slump means that Intu is now trading on a much lower earnings multiple than in recent years at 15, and also supports a much higher dividend yield of 6.4%. If the shareholder payouts can be maintained, this alone should be enough to protect the share price from further falls.
Rising tide of pessimism
Still managing to hold on to its blue-chip status, but only just, is property peer Hammerson (LSE: HMSO). Like Intu, Hammerson has also had to deal with the rising tide of pessimism, with its shares falling to 525p, from highs of over 705p less than three years ago.
The London-headquartered property group also has a retail-focused portfolio that includes investments in 23 prime shopping centres in the UK, Ireland and France, as well as 17 retail parks in the UK, and 20 premium outlets across Europe. Despite the doom and gloom that surrounds the retail sector at the moment, our friends in the City still expect Hammerson to eke out annual mid-single-digit earnings growth in each of the next two years, which is certainly better than the company’s current share price would suggest.
Like Intu, Hammerson operates as a Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) and distributes a generous chunk of its profits as dividends, which currently provide its shareholders with a solid yield of around 5%. Hammerson’s shares currently trade on a price-to-earnings multiple of 17, which although not cheap by conventional metrics, is much lower than its most recent five-year range of 20-25.

Phil Murphy watched the Grenfell disaster unfold on television from his flat on the eighth floor of a Manchester tower block. The former firefighter immediately decided to check out his own building’s safety – and was horrified at what he discovered.
On the morning of 14 June, as he switched on the news, Murphy knew straight away how serious the situation in North Kensington was.
Murphy had joined the fire service at the age of 28. Going into a fire, he remembers, was “absolutely frightening”.

But he had found the job, which he did for six years, extremely rewarding. He moved up through the ranks and became a fire safety officer.
The worst kind of call out? “Anything to do with children.”

Now, he lived in a tower that, like Grenfell, stood 23 storeys above ground, with a single staircase. And he wanted reassurance that the same thing couldn’t happen in his building.
For the past eight years, Murphy has occupied a flat in Stretford House, a 50-year-old block that sits between Manchester’s inner ring road and Stretford Mall shopping centre on one of the main routes into the city.
“I love living here,” he says. “We work hard to make it a community that we all enjoy.” Quite a few of his neighbours are elderly or disabled, and the residents’ committee, chaired by Murphy, works hard to stop them feeling isolated. There are plans to grow fruit and vegetables on the roof, as well as to start a recycling club in the shed.
He left the fire service a decade ago. But once you’ve been a fireman “it never leaves you”, he says. “You always read the fire safety in a building when you walk in.”
Murphy wasted no time – the day after the Grenfell fire he requested a meeting with Stretford House’s landlords, Trafford Housing Trust. He persuaded his local MP, Kate Green, to come with him.
“They were quite firm in reassuring us that everything was fine and they gave me a copy of the 2016 fire risk assessment for the building to take with me,” Murphy says.
If this was meant to reassure him, it failed.
“I was horrified, frightened and astonished at the contents of that document,” Murphy says.
He found there was a lack of documentation to show that fire alarms, emergency lights and dry risers – pipes which allow water to travel up a building in case of fire – were working or had been looked after.
There was also evidence that compartmentation – the barriers that prevent fire spreading from one part of the building to another – had been breached six years ago when new kitchens, new bathrooms and a communal energy system had been fitted. As a result, says Murphy, “the building was, in fact, full of opportunities for fire to spread”.

The housing trust “appeared not to understand what [the 2016 fire] risk assessment was screaming at them, and I mean screaming at them,” he adds.
So he began a forensic, line-by-line analysis of the risk assessment and, over four days, compiled a 14-page report. “I went into a bubble. I wasn’t sleeping very much at all. And I was completely obsessed with completing it,” he says.
He sent the report to the trust, deciding not to raise his concerns with fellow residents immediately.
“Surrounded by people that have been coming to me and crying and telling me all about their fears and why they were scared and why they weren’t sleeping, after seeing those horrific scenes from Grenfell – I just thought it might push them over the edge if I showed them that document, frankly,” he says.
The report was highly detailed and technical, but in the accompanying email Murphy was very clear about the levels of anxiety felt by the people living in his block.
The housing trust responded to Murphy’s email at 04:00 the morning after he sent it. By mid-morning there was a representative from the trust in the foyer “taking on board the concerns” of residents.
Eventually Murphy had a chance to fully voice his worries at a meeting with the trust and the local fire service. A more detailed inspection was carried out by the fire service and Murphy’s concerns about the compartmentation were confirmed.

When we meet Murphy at the entrance to his building, 13 maintenance vans are parked nearby. Inside, the sound of builder’s radios echoes round the corridors as workmen busily undertake fire safety repairs.
“On Thursday, as soon as the fire officer had been in, and confirmed that my report was correct, the building was full of people, putting fire stopping [insulation] round because it’s fatal. The place is a death trap without that fire stopping in place”, Murphy says.
We go to the flat of one of his neighbours, Pat. Her flat has just been inspected. Four areas in need of fire safety work had been identified – by her front door, in her kitchen, in her living room and in her boiler room.
Image caption Pat enjoys the view from her tower block window
“I call it my cubby hole,” Pat says.
The room is linked to a dry riser which runs the full length of the tower block.
Because it hasn’t been fireproofed, Murphy says, “if there is any smoke or fire in that riser, it will penetrate right through the building”.
“I’m frightened about smoke,” says Pat, 70, who has breathing problems. “That would kill me straight away.”
Image caption Pat as a young woman
To her relief, workmen are now scheduled to fix the problems.
“Maybe I’m the one who has lost more sleep,” says Murphy. “Because I’ve seen instances like this turn into real catastrophes.”
“And that’s why everyone is grateful for what you’ve done,” says Pat, holding back tears. “I mean it, Phil.”
Trafford Housing Trust, which owns and manages Stretford House, says it has reviewed its risk assessments, is undertaking urgent works on the blocks it owns and has fire wardens patrolling 24 hours a day.
Back on the ground floor, in the caretaker’s office, we meet Mike Corfield, Trafford Housing Trust’s assistant director for customers. He says the work being done in the block is not solely down to Murphy’s report.
Image caption Mike Corfield
“Within days of the fire at Grenfell we decided we would commission something called a level four risk assessment, the highest level fire risk assessment you can take,” he says.
He admits the 2016 fire risk assessment which worried Phil did highlight some issues with the compartmentation, but “didn’t flag them as a serious risk” and says it was written by a “trained and professional expert”.
Outside, looking at the rows of maintenance vehicles, we ask Murphy if he’s pleased the problems are now being fixed.
Image caption Murphy with Stretford resident Wendy
“There’s still some very, very serious things for them lot to do,” he says. “It’s certainly warranted this level of reaction.”
He’s not giving up, though, until he feels all his concerns have been addressed. There is one thing he keeps telling the landlords: “If you lived here, it would be different.”
And he is not just thinking about his own block of flats. He wants to develop an app to allow residents to run their own safety checks.
“I want to do something to empower residents of high-rise blocks all around the country to look after their own fire safety,” he says. “Because at the moment we’re all feeling very disempowered and frightened.”

AFLW: Western Bulldogs get off to flying start with win against Fremantle
WESTERN BULLDOGS  2.0      3.0      5.6      6.8     (44) FREMANTLE  1.0      1.5      1.5      1.6     (12) GOALS – Western Bulldogs: K.Brennan 2, A.O’Connor, E.Blackburn, J.Lambert, K.McLeod. Having shed the tag of the AFL’s “lovable losers” four months ago at the MCG, the Western Bulldogs keep winning. This time it was their women, who broke clear of Fremantle with a dominant third quarter to record a comfortable 32-point victory at home on Saturday night and stamp themselves as early AFLW flag contenders. While there was no repeat of Friday night’s Ikon Park lockout, the crowd of 10,100 meant Whitten Oval was close to capacity and made for a great night out west.

Packed Princes Park watches Carlton take debut win
Four goals from Darcy Vescio helped the Blues to victory over Collingwood after a lock out at Princes Park for the first ever AFLW match.
Why the Western Bulldogs won the game
The Dockers’ first win in the men’s league came 22 years ago at this venue against Fitzroy, but their women’s chance to repeat that history was thwarted by poor kicking for goal, as they could muster just 1.5 to half-time. Ultimately though the Bulldogs were easily the better side, comfortably winning all the key statistical categories. Melbourne Stars cricketer Emma Kearney was outstanding with 21 disposals, but she had plenty of help from skipper Katie Brennan, who kicked two goals to go with 15 disposals.

The play of the game
Kirsten McLeod kicked the first of the game for the Dogs, but Fremantle hit back minutes later. Tiah Haynes’ kick from just beyond the 50-metre arc fell to a pack at full forward. The ball fell to ground where Dockers skipper Kara Donnellan gathered cleanly, slipped an attempted Laura Bailey tackle, and handballed to Melissa Caulfield, who calmly slotted Fremantle’s first from 25 metres. It would be the visitors’ only goal of the night.
The moment that people will talk about
This has been a special weekend for many pioneering football women who helped make this competition a reality, but few have done more for the cause than Susan Alberti, who stood down as Bulldogs vice-president late last year. Alberti’s contribution was recognised by the Bulldogs faithful on Saturday night. As she went to take her seat minutes before the game, Alberti received a standing ovation from those hundreds nearby in the grandstand.

What the win/loss means for the teams
These two sides were among the pre-season premiership fancies, and the standard of play appeared to be marginally better than that on display 24 hours earlier at Carlton. An opening round win will be a great launching pad for the Bulldogs, and they are at home again next weekend in a Friday night clash against Adelaide – who also started with a victory. The pressure on the Dockers suddenly increases, but they should be warm favourites at home to the Brisbane Lions next Sunday.
What they said afterwards
Western Bulldogs coach Paul Groves: “We understand that now a little bit of notice will come on us that we’re a good team and we’re playing good footy.
“But we’ll still go out there hunting the opposition and treating ourselves as the underdog, which we did tonight.”
Fremantle coach Michelle Cowan: “We certainly can bring better effort. Initially just a bit disappointed and look forward to reviewing the game.”
