John Craigie with Tré Burt at A & R Music Bar, Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 11, 2024
John Craigie likes to say if he didn’t tell stories on stage, his gigs would last just eight minutes.
While this is hyperbole - and seems a subtle wink at Todd Snider’s famous 18-minutes bit - Craigie is a talker; as funny as many comics with a wide range of folk songs in his quiver to boot.
So it happened that Craigie regaled a wildly enthusiastic audience gathered Oct. 11 inside Columbus, Ohio’s, A & R Music Bar with tales of his recent Europe and Australia tours and playing U.S. festivals. These were stories of shy Norwegians crammed into a rickety balcony while the floor remained empty; of French concertgoers trying to figure out if Craigie was a happy (a la Johnny Cash) or Townes Van Zandt-styled sad American cowboy; of koalas with chlamydia (but “only the hot ones,” Craigie said in a gag that bombed Down Under); and of a loquacious singer/songwriter who finds talking to festivalgoers and fellow musicians terrifying.
“I’m nervous to be alive,” he said.
And there were songs, of course, with “I am California” capping the 85-minute set as Craigie, opener Tré Burt and a couple hundred Ohioans sung the Golden State’s praises:
So drink all my wine/cut all my trees/make love on my beaches/smoke all my weed/I am California/can’t you see?/wherever you roam/you’ll always want me
A beautiful conclusion.
Getting there was a solo-acoustic trip across Craigie’s songbook. Eyes closed, Craigie bashed out loud chords on “Part Wolf.” “Resurrection Bay” was quietly romantic, as was the hilarious “Mallory,” which explores befriending a deaf woman who attended a house show with another who fell asleep and together comprised the entire audience.
“I Wrote Mr. Tambourine Man” mixed comedy and solemnity and “Laurie Rolled Me a J” found Craigie blowing into a harp, adding fresh lyrics with a hearty fuck-you for J.D. Vance and making the audience go bonkers as it had all evening.
“I’m telling the agents - we gotta go back to Columbus,” he said.
Burt likely felt the same way as the John Prine discovery and one of the last artists signed to Oh Boy Records before Prine’s death offered up 30 minutes of such introspective songs as “Know Your Demons” and “Sweet Misery” on “git-box” and harmonica and delivered them in a raspy, but sonorous, emotionally charged singing voice. But Burt - who doesn’t use a setlist - forgot to play songs from Traffic Fiction, the album he is supposed to be promoting.
“Fuck,” he said before exiting the stage with the beer a fan handed to him.
“That’s why you write a setlist.”

Vancouver Folk Music Festival returns for the 46th year with an impressive line up
The 46th annual Vancouver Folk Music Festival returns this July 14-16 at Jericho Beach Park, thanks in no small part to audiences’ huge support and a groundswell of support. The 2023 edition of the Vancouver Folk Music Festival carries on the great legacy of musical excellence and eclectic discovery the annual summer tradition is renowned for bringing to the park. From July 14-16, some of the world’s finest traditional and contemporary folk, world and roots music artists will spend the weekend bringing their works to friends, fans, appreciators of music and those who love the magic of this festival are invited to gather again to celebrate.
Board member and Programming Committee Chair, Fiona Black says: “This festival is a touchstone in the lives of so many of its far-reaching community: long-time and new audience members, out-of-town visitors who come year after year, volunteers, donors, sponsors, artists and so many more. I think this year everyone appreciates this iconic festival a little more. None of us take it for granted. For the VFMF, “folk music” is an inclusive term that encompasses as broad a range of roots-based music from around the world as you can imagine. The beauty of this festival is that it brings such an extensive range of artists together for three days of connecting with each other, inspiring unique collaborations and making lasting memories for the amazing gathering of folks that unite every year to celebrate life, community and music. That tradition continues this year with these artists, and we welcome everyone back to the park this summer to be part of this joyful experience.” Some 40 music acts from 10 countries, 6 states and 8 provinces will be found performing on the Festival’s three daytime stages and an evening stage over the summer weekend. Additional artists will be announced shortly. The festival’s gates open at 3pm on Friday, July 14, and music runs on Saturday and Sunday, July 15 & 16 from 11am to 11pm. This year's lineup includes a number of acclaimed artists known to many in the festival’s audience, including: Arizona’s Tex-Mex outfit Calexico, women’s music icon Ferron, the multi-faceted Joachim Cooder, the award-winning William Prince, and two genuine music legends, Joe Henry and Albert Lee. Music from around the world takes centre stage at the festival as well, including a towering figure in the world of traditional Persian music, Kayhan Kalhor and, among other international visitors, three groups who live for the music of the dance. From Italy’s Kalàscima, teaming up at the festival with stunning singer, Andrea Ramolo comes the passion and energy of the tarantella; the Cláudio Rabeca Quartet with special guest, Serena Eades play forró, the popular dance music of Brazil, and; we’re exciting to share the remarkable collaboration in the Melón Jiménez & Lara Wong Flamenco-World Trio. From south of the border, a number of artists are slated to bring the sounds of the US to the Jericho stages. Including one of zydeco and Cajun music’s great accordionists, Cedric Watson, who performs with fiddler Jourdan Thibodeaux; East LA’s Las Cafeteras’ son jarocho tunes will sure to bring folks to their feet; and folk music treasure, Aoife O’Donovan, brings her beautiful voice. Emerging artists are also on the roster including the Berklee College vocal trio and internet sensations, Tiny Habits; a strong and clear voice for social justice, Tré Burt, and BC’s own hip hop adventurer, Ruby Singh and The Future Ancestors. Homegrown talents are well represented on this year’s roster, including Jim Byrnes, The High Bar Gang, Jill Barber, The Sojourners, Ceileigh Cardinal and Newfoundland’s Rum Ragged and many more. I am quite partial to a bit of punk from time to time, Anti-Flag have somehow never managed to be on my radar though, however I do recognise the name. Which is a shame as their 13th full length album The Lies They Tell Our Children is a bit bloody good. Obviously I don’t know their history to compare it with but they already came to play with guest spots from Killswitch Engage’s Jesse Leach, Bad Religion’s Brian Baker, Rise Against’s Tim Mcllrath, Die Toten Hosen’s Campino, Pinkshift’s Ashrita Kumar, Tré Burt, Bad Cop/Bad Cop’s Stacy Dee and Silverstein’s Shane Told. What a list, they definitely have a lot of very talented friends these guys. The opening track “They Sold Everything” is only a minute and a half in length but I cannot get it out of my head, I love dark stuff that sounds happy, I’ll definitely be spending a lot of time belting this out over the years. Another shout out to “Victory Or Death (We Gave ‘Em Hell)” for allowing me to sway around chanting those lyrics, I’ve played that one on a loop a lot, it’s good for the soul. The whole thing is very charged with ideas and deeper themes but the fact it can tackle all of that but still be bloody good fun is something to celebrate.

Im so glad Black Country is being highlighted in music right now.
Many white country fans seem to be flummoxed as to why Lil Nas X (from Georgia) or Beyonçe (from Texas) would show interest in country music. They don't understand why Black artists are suddenly encroaching on "their" music. Which is hilarious, since African American music has always been an integral part of the Country genre. The banjo is litterally an African American instrument.
From Charlie Pride to Darius Rucker, from Country and Bluegrass to Folk and Americana this music has always been filled with amazing Black artists.
Some of my favorite's:
The Carolina Chocolate Drops
Rhiannon Giddons
Tré Burt
Alabama Shakes
Kaia Kater
Adia Victoria
Feel free to add more to the list.🖤
Lil Nas X did a cover of Jolene and Dolly Parton responded to it on twitter
Image descriptions under the cut
[ID: Screenshots of two tweets. The first one is by Dolly Parton and it says "I was so excited when someone told me that Lil Nas X had done my song #Jolene. I had to find it and listen to it immediately…and it's really good. Of course, I love him anyway. I was surprised and I'm honored and flattered. I hope he does good for both of us. Thank you @LilNasX". The second tweet is Lil Nas X responding to the Dolly Parton tweet by simply saying "HOLY SHIT" in all caps. End of ID.]

Well, I caught a nasty cold that had me stuck in bed for a few days. Monday: Tuesday: Scorpion Child @ Brick by Brick at 7:30pm AND: Tré Burt @ Soda Bar at 7:30pm AND: Pinback @ Casbah at 8:30pm Wednesday: Pinback @ Casbah at…

By Tré Burt
After a few moments of training my ears to the muted tones of adults’ conversation in the doorway of my third-grade classroom, I’m able to cut through all the clamor and noise. I make out this sentence from the teacher: “Tré’s a bright child, but he lacks common sense.”

REVIEW: Tré Burt “Traffic Fiction”
REVIEW: Tré Burt “Traffic Fiction” #tréburt #trafficfiction #listenbetter #americanaandy #americanahighways #newmusic2023
Tré Burt – Traffic Fiction Grief can serve as a reason for reflection and a spur for reinvention. After the death of his grandfather, singer-songwriter Tré Burt decided to honor his memory, as well as times shared with his father, by deviating from his more folky style and head back toward his first love – classic soul. Burt’s new album, Traffic Fiction, still trades in Burt’s favorite topics –…
