Stay Still
Pairing: Tim Bradford x Lucy Chen
Warnings: Language, A N G S T
A/N: Hello! I have fallen down a new ship hole and my muse has been itching to write. I havenât been part of a active fandom in years but I am so excited to get back in the game :) I am currently a few episodes into Season 2 so please bear with me as things written in the story may not be canon/accurate. Not sure what other platform to post this on (AO3?). Let me know what you think!
_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_
âYou know, I should have stayed in bed today. I had a feeling.â Lucy Chen said, crossing her arms over her chest. Â âI knew something like this would happen and-â
âAnd what boot? You can ask yourself what could you do to make things different? A hundred things? Maybe even a thousand. You could go to your grave thinking of ways that you can change your life every day.â Stated her former training officer and partner Tim Bradford.
âYes sir, but-â She began saying
âNo buts, you need to be thinking ab-â
âDo you ever get those feelings?â she asked. âThe ones where thereâs a pit in your stomach and you know, you just know that something is going to happen. Like you have a premonition that your future self is trying to warn you that-â
âChen.â
â-something bad is going to happen. My dad always told me it was probably anxiety which ok who doesnât have some form of anxiety. This morning was a sign, that I should have just stayed in bed or-or taken the day off and went and got a pedicure.â
âGet a-? Chen.â He said a little more forceful.
âAnd you know what sounds really good right now? A burger and not just any burger but one of those from that little shack on the corner of 5th and Dobson, with a large order of-â
âLucy!â he yelled causing her to startle.
âWhat!â
âYou need to stay focused and calm down.â
âI am calm!â
âDonât say youâre calm.â He told her as he moved around the room. âI need you to tell me what happened.â Tim told her as he leaned his right elbow onto the counter, crossing his feet over each other.
âYouâve been here to whole time, you know what happened!â Lucy stated exasperated.
âTell me again boot.â He commanded as his partner rolled her eyes.
âStop calling me that, Iâm not youâre boot anymore.â She told him as he leveled her a look.
Four Hours Earlier
âTraffic cameras in the vicinity of Wellington and Rose caught who our detectives think to be our bomber from yesterdayâs apartment explosion that killed Logan Price. Officer West, hand out the BOLO. Keep your eyes open on patrol today for a blue 2014 Toyota Camry registered to a Alex Ryan, plate numbers are on the sheet. Detectives believe that Ryanâs ex-girlfriend was in a relationship with Price and that Mr. Ryan didnât like that idea.â
âDo we know where the girlfriend is?â
âDetectives were able to get in contact with her and she is currently in Chicago on business.â Sargent Grey told the team of officers. âNolan and Harper, head to Axelâs Auto where Ryan was last employed and find out if his coworkers might know where he is. Lopez and West drive by his apartment and see if he may be around. Chen and Bradford, stake out the girlfriendâs, this guy has got a vendetta and likely does not know she is out of town, he may try something. Thatâs all I have, you are dismissed.â
Lucy Chen looked over the paper in her hands as she and her former training officer walked out of the debrief. âWell, this guy seems like fun. Charges ranging from reckless endangerment to B&E. Looks like he stepped up his game.â
âYou think blowing someone up is fun boot?â Bradford stopped and turned looking towards his partner, crossing his arms over his chest.
âNo, I just want to know what set him off. I mean nothing in his previous arrests indicate anything geared towards anger or jealousy.â
âOk and? People are unpredictable.â
âI know itâs just that⊠Something isnât adding up.â Lucy told him, her brow furrowed as she read over the report again.
âA lot of shit doesnât. You can keep reading in the car, letâs go.â
âŠ.
âHave you ever had to deal with a bomber situation before?â Chen asked as Bradford drove closer to the ex-girlfriendâs address.
Bradford clenched his jaw, gripping the steering wheel till his knuckles were white, âIâve worked with a few of the guys on the squad, had a few incidents during both my tours.â He told her, forcing the memories back as he gave his right turn signal, steering the the patrol car onto Pine Drive.
Chen glanced at him from the side of her eye, knowing thatâs all she was going to get out of him. She looked around, observing their surroundings as they were within a few houses of their destination. âWait!â
Bradford hit his breaks. âWhat?â he questioned loudly, Chenâs voice pulling him out of his stupor.
âThere.â She pointed across him to the side of a house. âThatâs a 2014 Camry. Can you see the plates?â
Tim shook his head, pulling the car to the side, throwing it in park. âGet the scope out of the center console.â She opened the compartment, grabbing it before handing it over. âWhat were the plate numbers?â he asked as he moved the device into position.
Chen looked down at the BOLO paper, â9-Echo-7-Tango-8-2-Limaâ
âGot him.â He told her handing over the scope for her to confirm. âNo oneâs in the car, he must be waiting for her in the house.â
Bradford grabbed the mic, âDispatch this is 7-Adam-19, weâre on location at 2924 Pine Drive our suspectâs car is at our location, requesting back-up.â
â10-4 7-Adam-19 back-up is being dispatched to your location.â
âDispatch show 7-Adam-07 enroute to 7-Adam-19s location.â
âWhat now?â Lucy asked.
âWe keep an eye on the house and gear up.â
âŠ
The sound of a battering ram splintering the wood of the door was all that could be heard as they breached the house.
âLAPD!â
âLAPD! Ryan come out!â
âWe have the place surrounded!â
Four SWAT members divided up into teams as Bradford, Chen, West and Lopez entered the house behind them to assist in the sweep. Bradford motioned for Chen to head straight as he went left down a hallway. Lopez going right as West headed straight with Chen.
âClear!â
âClear!â
âClear!â
Voices echoed in the empty rooms as they checked each space.
âHeâs not here.â Angela Lopez stated as she re-holstered her gun stepping into the kitchen.
âNo sign that anyone has been here.â Jackson West told them, stepping into the room.
âThen why did he park the car here?â Chen questioned. âWhy make us think he is here?â
âDid anyone check the car?â asked Bradford.
âCarson and Bell did, hood was warm, keys in the ignition but nobody around. They did find an electronic box in the passenger seat, has some kind of keypad on it.â A SWAT member informed them.
âChen, letâs do a search on the car. Lopez, you and West start questioning neighbors, he couldnât have gotten far.â Bradford suggested as he moved into the living room, looking around for anything that might be out of place.
Lucy followed him, looking around the room, glancing outside at the backyard before turning around. âDid anyone-â she began to ask, moving across the room when she felt a change under her feet, the sound of something giving way under her feet before the metallic click of something locking into place. Bradford turned around as she looked down at her feet planted on the carpet before looking back up, panicked.
âTim.â She said, fear lacing her voice. âI think- I think I just messed up.â
âLucy, donât. Move.â
âWasnât planning on it.â
âWhat can you tell me?â
âIâm standing on some kind of plate; itâs under the rug, it gave way and made a metallic locking noise when I stepped on it.â
âLetâs hope this one isnât affected by radio frequencies.â He told her as he grabbed the radio from his duty belt. âOfficer Bradford to Dispatch, send bomb squad, fire and EMS to our immediate location and notify Sargent Grey to contact me on my cell, that we have a situation.â
âBradford, bomb squad and LAFD has been notified and are enroute. Sargent Grey will be in contact.â
â19 to 07, begin evacuating the surrounding houses. No one is to step foot through that door until bomb squad arrives.â
â07 10-4.â
âLucy, look at me.â Tim told her, holstering his radio. âLuce⊠I need you to focus on me.â He pleaded for her attention to puller her out of her fear fed trance. âI need you to slowly remove your radio and you gun from you belt and hand them to me.â he directed as she slowly began doing as instructed. âGood. Now, tell me what do we do first?â
âThis better not be another one of your exercises.â Lucy looked around before landing on her partnerâs face. âContact bomb squad, fire and EMS, establish a command, secure the perimeter, evacuate the surrounding houses, assess the scene.â
âGood.â He said, running a hand over his face. âWhatâs next?â
âUmmmmâŠâ she thought. âWait for bomb squad to arrive to clear the scene of any secondary devices?â
âOn their way.â Bradford said as he turned around, closing his eyes for a second as he took a deep breath before grabbing his phone from his vest.
âI had a feeling.â Chen said quietly.
âWhat?â he asked her, turning around.
âThat I might die today, I had a feeling.â
âDonât.â He told her, taking a step forward. âDonât go there.â
âI even told West and Nolan, they didnât believe me.â
âYou,â he said, pointing a finger at her, wanting to take another step forward but thinking better of it. âare not dying today, not on my watch.â The shrill tone of a cell phone broke through the air, âBradford. Youâre on speaker sir.â
âTim, what the hell is going on? Iâve been in a meeting with the captain.â
âWe found the bombing suspects car at the ex-girlfriends house and preformed a preliminary search, nothing was found until Officer Chen stepped onto a pressure plate of some sort.â
âIs there any way to get to it?â
âThereâs a basement sir. We are waiting on bomb squad to do a search, they should be here any minute to take further action.â
âI will be there in twenty. Officer Chen, is there anything I can do for you?â
âNo sir.â She told him before muttering under her breath. âMaybe turn back time.â
âIâm twenty out.â
Tim looked at his rookie. âYouâre going to be fine boot.â
âTell me a story.â She asked.
He stared at her for a second, âWhen I was stationed in Afghanistan, one night,â he began telling her with a laugh âwe thought it was a brilliant idea to prank our commander. He had just come back from the States, his wife had given birth to their forth kid, and we thought it would be hilarious to unscrew some of the nuts and bolts of his bed so when he went to sit or lay down he would fall through. One of my buddies, Ryder, put all the pieces in his pocket and forgot about them, loosing most of them. When the commander came back, he was so pissed,â Bradford smiled in memory. âwe had to run for days. He ended up making Ryder switch out their beds and Ryder just slept in the floor for a straight week until we could round up enough supplies to fix it.â
âYou know, I think that is in the top five of the most words Iâve ever hear you speak.â
Bradford rolled his eyes, as his radio squalled. âBomb squad just pulled up.â
â10-4â
âHey Bradford?â Lucy said with a slight smile on her face. âThank you.â
âŠ
A tall man with red hair walked through the entry of the living room. âOfficer Chen? I am Captain Williams with the bomb squad. Officer Bradford, you can relax and are free to go, the house is secure, no other explosive devices were found.â
âCaptain, good to see you.â Tim acknowledged.
âTim, this your rook?â
Bradford nodded âOfficer Lucy Chen, Captain Michael Williams, he was my commanding officer my first year as a boot.â
âNice to meet you, but I am sorry you had to put up with him.â
Bradford glared. âIf you werenât standing on a bomb right nowâŠâ
âWish it were under different circumstances. The good news is that this device will not be impacted by any radio frequencies that we can determine so the frequencies of the handheld radio are fine. Now your day is about to get a little bit shittier Officer Chen as you are standing on a sensor plate wired to a detonator. Compressing the plate was the equivalent to pulling the hammer back on a gun, when you move or take your weight off the plate, it would be like your finger pulling the trigger. Iâll be back to outline the device, but we believe based on what we have seen from the basement you are standing on a 3x3 metal plate wired to at least 8 kilograms of RDX. In other words, you cannot move, not until we can disarm it.â
âUnderstood.â Lucy said, letting out a shaky breath.
âThatâs enough to-⊠Whatâs the time frame Williams?â
âA few hours at least, weâve got to get a better look at it in the basement because weâre not sure what exactly we are dealing with. Bombers are like fingerprints no two make one the same. We can assume that he does in fact have some sort of history with pyrotechnics in his background even though it may not be on his rap sheet.â
âWhat about the device they found in the car?â
âOne of my guys is taking a look at it but there could be at least a hundred thousand combinations to disarm the plate. Any leads on the guy who done this?â
âCanvasing his hangouts but nothing yet.â
âKeep me updated and I will do the same to you.â Captain Williams told them before heading towards the door of the basement.
Lucy let out a breath she didnât know she was holding. Â âYou know, I should have stayed in bed today. I had a feeling. I knew something like this would happen and-.â
âAnd what? You can ask yourself what could you do to make things differently? A hundred different things? Maybe even a thousand. You could go to your grave thinking of ways that you can change your life every day.â
âYes sir, but-â She began saying
âNo buts, you need to be thinking-â
âDo you ever get those feelings?â she asked. âThe ones where thereâs a pit in your stomach and you know, you just know that something is going to happen.
A burger and not just any burger but one of those from that little shack on the corner of 5th and Dobson, with a large order of-â
âLucy!â he yelled causing her to startle.
âWhat!â
âYou need to stay focused and calm down.â
âI am calm!â
âDonât say youâre calm.â He told her as he moved around the room. âI need you to tell me what happened.â Tim told her as he leaned his right elbow onto the counter, crossing his feet over each other.
âYouâve been here to whole time, you know what happened!â Lucy stated exasperated.
âTell me again boot.â He commanded as his partner rolled her eyes.
âStop calling me that, Iâm not youâre boot anymore.â She told him as he leveled her a look.
âLucy! Are you ok?â Jackson asked, carefully walking into the room.
Lucy copied Bradfordâs look, âDo I look ok Jackson?â
Jackson coward back. âNo?â
âThen donât ask.â She told him. âAnything from Harper and Nolan?â
Jackson cleared his throat âYeah a bunch of Ryanâs coworkers said that he liked to go to this bar out on Rolling Hills Avenue and , they are checking it out.â
âGood, good.â Lucy said as the silence consumed them.
âIâm going to go check in with Sargent Grey. Jackson you stay with her for a few?â Tim asked as he walked away.
âYeah, sure no problem.â
Lucy rolled her eyes, âNot like I can go anywhere Bradford!â
âŠ
âWhat if we- What about replacing my weight with something of equal weight?â Chen asked.
âWe believe the plate that you are is standing on can detect any minute fluctuation in pressure. If we try to transfer the weight, it could set off the bomb; put protective gear on, set off the bomb; she moves from one foot to the oth-â
âOk, I think she gets it.â Interrupted Bradford. âSo what are we supposed to do, stand here all day while you and your team try to deactivate it?â
âIâm sorry Tim but youâre going to have to leave.â
Tim crossed his arms over his chest, his feet moving into a defensive stance. âIf you think I am abandoning my Rookie than youâre out of your goddamn mind.â
âYouâre non-essential personnel Bradford, you have no business being here.â
âLike hell I do. Iâm not leaving her behind sir.â
Captain Williams intently stared Bradford down. âFine, but nothing stupid.â
âYes Sir.â Bradford acknowledged as the other man left the room, slowly walking around the living area, observing his surroundings.
âYou should go, you donât need to stay.â
âIâm not going anywhere Chen.â He told her picking up a hidden magazine off the coffee table.
âYouâre putting yourself in danger.â
âIâm a grown ass man, Iâll be fine.â
âSo, youâre just going to watch me stand here all day?â
âYup.â He said taking a seat on the barstool, kicking his feet up onto the marbled countertop, flipping through the pages. âDo women actually read this stuff?â
âI wouldnât know.â
âNine Ways to Make Sex Better for Him. Number one: have him-â
âBradford!â Chen yelled, a blush on her cheeks, causing Tim to look over the top of the magazine. âShouldnât we be I donât know finding a way to get me off this literal ticking timebomb?â
âThereâs plenty of people already working on it Chen.â He told her, returning to his magazine. âBesides, I see this as a learning opportunity.â
âHow is you reading a womanâs magazine a learning opportunity?â
âNumber two: If you havenât already, try having him lay on his-â
âOfficer Bradford, a word.â Sargent Grey requested, standing in the entryway of the room. âHang in there Officer Chen you should be back home by dinner time.â
Tim walked over to the open entry âSir.â
âThe lack of access to the ceiling in the basement is limiting their options, but bomb squad learned that the handheld remote that was used to activate the bomb can deactivate it as well they just-â
âStop it.â Lucyâs voice echoed in the room, gaining the menâs attention. âI am not a civilian.â
âOfficer Chen?â
âYou are acting like I am not in the room which I clearly am, you think I will begin to freak out any minute. I am not a civilian. I went through the academy and I deserve to know what the hell is going on.â
The two superiors glanced at each other before moving further into the room.
âBomb squad notified me that there are a few setbacks, the device is a little harder to get to than previously believed. The handheld remote found in the car was used to activate the bomb and can be used to deactivate it as well, but they need the right 5-didgit code.â
âBut thatâs roughly a hundred thousand different combinations.â Pointed our Bradford.
âExactly and the device is tamper proof meaning-â
âWe enter the wrong code and no more Lucy.â Chen concluded.
âCaptain Williams has informed me that they are attempting to use a fiber scope to view the device. There is good news, Officer Nolan and Harper were able to apprehend our suspect at his favorite watering hole. If we can get him to make a plea deal then we can get the code.â
âIf we can get him to make a plea deal, that doesnât mean he still would not give us the wrong code.â
âYou let us worry about that Officer Chen.â
âHas someone looked further into his background? Thereâs a reason he put this device in his exâs house.â Questioned Bradford.
âWeâve got Lopez and West back at the station looking over it with a fine-toothed comb. Weâre going to figure this out Chen.â
âŠ
Wesley Evers walked out of the interrogation room looking grim. âHe is willing to give the code, but he has demands.â
âOf course he does.â Nyla Harper said as she rolled her eyes. âLet me guess he wantâs amnesty.â
âYou would be correct. I told him that the D.A would never go for it but thatâs his terms.â Wesley told the group of officers surrounding him. âHe said that either he walks or she dies. Listen Iâm having to hand this case over to a partner due to moral conflict, but I swear we are going to do everything we can to get Lucy off that bomb.â
âHas anyone come up with a plan B yet? We could get him clothes, food, even computer time while he is behind bars.â Nolan suggested.
âMy partner is on their way in now to work something out.â
âŠ
âIâve informed my client that there was a deal to be had, just not for exoneration and heâs still insisting he walk. Iâm giving him a few minutes to think in the tank, but I am doing everything I can.â The lawyer stated, walking out towards the group of officers.
âCan one of us talk to him? See if we can get something out of him.â Asked Jackson.
âAs a lawyer? No, I will not allow my client to be questioned and harassed by a cop without me being present. Now, if youâll excuse me, I am going to grab a cup of coffee.â
The group turned and watched the man head towards the break room. âDid he just?â
âI think he did.â
âHarper, you have more experience with this kind of thing, you up for it?â
Nyla Harper smirked. âBet your ass.â
âŠ
âSargent Grey, weâve got a problem.â Captain Williams voice came over the radio.
Bradford looked up from the Health and Food magazine he was reading. âThat doesnât sound good.â He mumbled as Sargent Grey walked through the front door heading towards the open door of the basement. Tim stood up, adjusting his duty belt before glancing at Lucy, walking behind his commanding officer.
âWe were able to breech the ceiling but what we found on the scope youâre not going to like.â Captain Williams told him as he motioned him over to the monitors.
âThereâs a timer.â
âShit.â Bradford cursed.
Michael Williams turned around, looking to the two people standing behind him. âIt seems as though the timer was activated when she stepped on the triggering plate. According to the countdown she has forty-three minutes and seventeen seconds left.â
âFuck.â
âWeâre trying to disarm it but the fuse, the detonator, the timing pin are all shielded by a steel plate behind the timer.â
âSo, no access?â
âUnfortunately no. A few of my guys mentioned that you may have a lead Sargent Grey?â
The official cleared his throat, glancing at the Officer standing next to him. âYes, we believe that during his time in prison, Ryan became friends with one of his fellow inmates, Kyle Louis who happens to specialize in pyrotechnics of the illegal variety. Ryan told us that Louis helped him set it up, took what little money he had offered and ran. I had dispatch issue a BOLO for Louis twenty minutes ago.â
âWe donât have time for this bullshit! Canât we- we put her in a suit? Or further increase the pressure or something?!â exclaimed Bradford loudly.
âListen, that is an unstable device, just a minuscule movement from her and it could go off. And if that thing goes off it could level not only this house but the ones surrounding it, killing who knows how many people.â
âIncluding my partner!â Bradford seethed. âFind. A. Way.â He demanded before walking up the stairs.
Captain Williams and Sargent Grey watched him go. âI promise, me and my guys are doing all that we can on our end.â
âWe are trying to get Ryan to give up the code now but the things he is requesting in exchange is not logical. Iâll keep you updated.â Said Sargent Grey before heading up the stairs.
Bradford turned the corner, leaning his body against the entry column as he watched Lucy. âWhatâs the word?â
He let out a sigh. âWell the good news is that they isolated the bomb, they are still trying to figure out the schematics and mechanics.â
âAnd the bad news?â
âWho said there was bad news?â he asked hesitantly.
Chen worriedly stared down her partner. âLook at where I am, thereâs always bad news.â
Bradford stared at the wall behind her before taking a deep breath. âAlright⊠Thereâs a timer attached to the bomb.â
Lucy nodded slightly, taking a deep breath. âHow long?â she asked, willing her voice not to shake.
âAbout thirty-five minutes.â He whispered.
Lucy slightly nodded again. âOk. Ok, thatâs- itâs- I canât keep standing here all day anyway.â She nervously laughed as a stray tear fell down her cheek.
âLucy, they are doing everything-â
âthey can to figure out the code, to find the guy who made this but-â
âHey, no. Donât- donât lose faith.â he said stepping closer but minding the boundary. âWeâre going to get you out of this. I found you fucking buried alive, I can and fucking will get you off a fucking timebomb.â
âI think thatâs the most Iâve ever heard you say fuck in one sentence.â Lucy smiled as she wiped the few new tears away. âTim, can you- can you do me a favor?â
He watched her, âAnything.â
âMy phone, itâs in the car. Call- call my parents.â She asked, taking a steadying breath.
âNo.â
âYou just said anything.â
âI never agreed to do it though. I am not calling your parents because at the end of today, you are going home.â
âWe just said none of us know that.â
âWeâve been in bad situations before, hell we get shot at almost every other day!â
Lucy rolled her eyes, âBecause one of us lives for the excitement and itâs not me.â
âYou donât complain.â He smirked, walking into the kitchen. âFace it, you enjoy it just as much as I do.â
A lull in noise engulfed the room as Lucy rolled her eyes âYes but-â
âAlright, I know where your emotions are right now but how are you feeling?â Bradford asked as he raided the fridge.
âI need to pee.â
Bradford turned his head to look over his shoulder, giving her an incredulous look. âThat, is too much information.â
âAnd Iâm still hungry. I also never got to finish my drink earlier, so itâs probably watery now.â She sighed as Bradford walked back into the room.
âStick out your hand.â
âI donât really think I should be moving a lot right now.â
Tim rolled his eyes, âItâs your hand, it will not cause your whole body to move now, stick it out.â
Lucy stuck her hand all the way out, feeling something drop into it. âA sucker?â
Tim shrugged as he opened a small bag of M&Ms. âApparently someone in this house has a bit of a sweet tooth, I found a drawer filled with candy.â
Chen began unwrapping her lollipop, sticking it in her mouth as she looked around the room. âThatâs it.â Lucy said, her feet itching to move. âI figured it out.â Her eyes going wide.
âFigured what out?â
âThe missing piece. Look into the backyard.â She instructed. âWhat do you see?â
Bradford sighs before walking over. âI see grass, some flowers, a kids bike, a huge jungle gym, a few⊠toys. Thereâs a kid.â
âExactly. Thereâs a kid. And if the ex-girlfriend is out of town then where is the kid?â
â07-Adam-19 to Command. What do we know about the ex-girlfriend?â Bradford asked into his radio. âIf youâre right then-â
âDelilah Callaway. 34. Born and raised in Northern Michigan moved to LA for work about fifteen years ago.â Sargent Greyâs voice scratched through the speaker of the handheld radio.
âWhen did she and our suspect begin dating?â
âShe stated somewhere around June 2008 to March 2013.â
âRight before Ryan was put in jail for Assault and Battery of a cop right?â
âFind a picture!â Chen told him as he took off out of the room.
âCorrect the arrest took place in February of 2013 charges were Felony Assault and Battery times four, Assault of a Government Employee times four, Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Unlawful possession of a Firearm, possession of heroin and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sentenced to seven years with parole.â
âGot it!â Bradford yelled bringing the picture back into the living room. âWhen was he released?â
âMarch 2020.â
â Sarge, Delilah has a kid. Looks to be about seven or eight. Do we know if Ryan was the father?â
âLooking into records now.â
âWhereâs the keypad?â Lucy asked, looking around. âThatâs the code. Ryan thought Delilah was going to be here, he didnât know she was going to be out of town. He somehow knew about the kid but she didnât want him in the kids life because of his criminal history. We get the kids birthday-â
âWe disarm the bomb.â Tim said, trying to control his emotions. âBut if youâre wrongâŠâ
âIâm not. He wants his kid. That was his plan, kill the boyfriend, have her step on the bomb and take the kid.â
âOfficer Bradford, the birth certificate has no father listed but we are attempting to contact Ms. Callaway.â
âWhatâs the birthday of the kid?â
âNovember 9th, 2013. Mind telling me whatâs going on?â
âSir, we believe that the child is Ryanâs. Callaway would not allow for him to see the child and he is retaliating. Do we know where the child is?â
âStill attempting contact. Weâll start asking the neighbors.â
âOfficer Chen.â Captain Williams acknowledged walking into the room. âI am sure Officer Bradford made you aware of the current situation.â
âHe has.â She said, looking at the clock on the wall. âFifteen minutes?â
âLetâs hope weâll get you off there before hand. Iâve got guys down below working till the last-minute possible moment. But⊠everyone else has to leave, including you Officer Bradford.â
âWait, can we just wait a few more minutes, please? We think we have a lead.â Chen pleaded.
Captain Williams sighed, âFive. Thatâs all you get.â
âWe need the keypad.â
âNo, thereâs only one chance-â Williams objected.
âWe know the code.â Lucy said firmly. Â
âAnd if youâre wrong?â
Tim and Lucy looked at each other. âThatâs a risk we are willing to take.â
âYour death wish then. Iâll be right back.â Said Captain Williams before leaving the room.
âTim, my phone.â She asked, sticking her hand out.
Bradford reached into the pocket on his vest, handing her the device he went out and retrieved before stepping out of the room.
Lucy hit the button she was looking for, only for it to ring a few times before being sent to voicemail. âHey dad, itâs me. I just⊠I wanted to hear your voice and tell you that I love you. No matter- no matter what you hear today, just please know that. Bye.â Lucy took a deep breath after ending the call, putting her phone into the pocket of her vest. âYou can come back now.â
Bradford walked around the corner. âWilliams gave me the device. Asked for a few minutes head start for his guys.â
âGive it to me and go.â
âWhat? No.â
âThere is no need for both of us to die.â
âWell good because neither of us is dying, itâs just a typical day and we are diffusing a bomb.â
âYou say that like you have done this before.â
âI have. Once.â He told her. âIn a dream.â
âOk, so what numbers are we putting in?â
âThe kids birthday. What was it?â he asked.
â11-9-13â
âFive Digits.â
âYouâve got to go, give me the keypad. I will put it in.â
âIâm not leaving.â He said, shaking fingers punching in the first number.
âItâll work.â Lucy began chanting under her breath.
Bradford punched in the last one, looking up, nodding at his partner. âThree.â
The only sound throughout the room was the chirp of the keypad and the plate dis-engaging as the tension in the air dissipated. Lucy in shock looked at Tim, lifting her right foot off the floor, taking a careful step.
âHoly shit.â She said, stumbling into the arms of her superior.
âBradford to Command. Sheâs off.â Bradford told them as Lucy wrapped her arms around him.
âI canât believe it worked.â Chen laughed as the sounds of footsteps approaching caused them to break apart.
âŠ
The sound of knocking at her door broke Lucy out of the mindless staring at her TV. She stood up, checking the peephole before opening. âHey.â She spoke tiredly. âWhat are you doing here?â
Tim stood up straighter, looking over his partner. âI wanted to check in on you, mind if I come in? I brought pizza and beer.â
Lucy moved out of the way. âSure, I was just watching TV.â
âReally? Cause itâs turned off.â He pointed out.
Lucy looked away, before getting up, moving into the kitchen to grab plates before coming back and sitting down onto the sofa.
âThey found Louis, just north of Fresno. Squealed like a pig. Theyâre both going back.â He told her, popping the tops off two bottles, passing the remote on the coffee table over to Lucy. âI know that you know but, itâs ok to not be ok right Luce. If you ever want to talk, I believe myself to be a good listener.â
Lucy turned to him âThanks for today.â
Tim nodded, grabbing a piece of pizza out of the box, taking a bite. âAlright, what are we watching?â He asked, throwing his arm over the back of the couch, propping his feet up on the table.
Lucy settled into the couch, scrolling through her Netflix for her comfort show.
âBaking? Really?â he asked.
âNot a word Bradford.â
Tim held his hands up in surrender. âThis secret is safe with me Rook.â He grinned, before taking another bite of the pizza.
Sometimes all you need, is a solid shoulder to cry on and steady arms to pick you up.

Tasmania
Marketing executives of Australia, I bring good news. Your advertisement campaigns are working on my five-year-old daughter. Ivy only needs to hear the words âDid someone say KFC?â and sheâll instantly launch into a chorus of I Love It by Icona Pop. When asked what she hoped would happen in 2021, she didnât wish for anything existential or even material, but rather answered: âThat I get to watch Holey Moley.â But thereâs one brand which stands out among the rest. Weâll pull up behind a ute at the traffic lights and hear from the back seat those immortal words: âOh, what a feeling - Toyota.â
And there were certainly plenty of those moments as we started the new year with a road trip around the island state of Tasmania - 240km south of the mainland across the heaving Bass Strait. Right until the last moment, it looked like the trip might be scuppered by COVID as clusters in Sydney and Melbourne prompted other states to shut their borders but on this occasion, we were in the right place at the right time and the Apple Isle lay before us.
Needless to say, there were a few raised eyebrows along the way when we declared we had travelled from New South Wales - at one point we were even removed from a queue and had to answer further questions from management before gaining entry - but Tassieâs welcome couldnât have been warmer. The people we met were so friendly and as for the place: well, where do you start?
At the beginning, I suppose, and the absolutely stunning Cataract Gorge in Launceston. Photographs simply canât do its forested cliffs, glassy lake and ancient boulders justice and the temperature of the public swimming pool in the centre of the gorge took our breath away for a second time as Rachel wisely watched on with the towels poolside. We emerged from the water shivering - and with fellow tourists peering down bemused from the chairlift above - but very much refreshed.
Launceston, the second-largest city in Tasmania, hadnât been forecast as one of the tripâs highlights but it proved to have been rather under-sold. The macaque monkeys (behind glass) in City Park, the windswept Tamar Island Wetlands and the hands-on Queen Victoria Museum were free attractions youâd pay good money to see elsewhere and Riverbend Park, in the city centre, boasts the best childrenâs playground Iâve ever seen. Itâs no exaggeration to say Ivy would have spent all day there, so vast and varied is the site. Peering down over the park are four huge grain silos, now converted into a plush hotel with a fancy restaurant on ground level. Pricey, yes, but quality grub.
When youâve been to Peppa Pig World, the bar for any other âworldâ is set pretty high but where Seahorse World in the Tamar Valley might have been lacking Grandpa Pigâs Little Train, it compensated with a genuinely interesting tour of the tanks and even a chance to hold a little seahorse. From this breeding centre on the banks of the Tamar, seahorses are shipped to aquariums all around the world so if youâve ever seen one, it probably came from there.
Our four nights in town were spent above a pub - better than it sounds or than we thought when we first pulled up - but there was a change of pace when we hit the east coast.
We quickly realised the weather in Tasmania can change almost as quickly as Boris Johnsonâs COVID response and so it was that we huddled on a beach somewhere along the Bay of Fires eating our picnic lunch wrapped in jumpers and waterproofs as some pretty mean waves pounded the white sand. Even us crazy northern hemisphere types werenât about to try swimming here.
Conditions at our east coast base were more clement, and naturally we hit the pool hard but also made full use of the other sports facilities - putting green, table tennis and basketball court to name but a few. Ivyâs ping-pong skills have improved exponentially since the turn of the year and some of our rallies were even worthy of the name. But every now and then comes a wild shot from the other end of the table which forces you to take evasive action as if facing a Pat Cummins bouncer.
Down the coast we drove, into the spectacular Freycinet National Park where the views across to Wineglass Bay are postcard-perfect. Peer over the edge and itâs a sheer drop to the rocks and waves below, look down at your feet and lizards are scurrying for cover. Disaster was averted at the last minute when the family parked next to us managed to retrieve the stuffed toy whose temporary loss had sent a little girl into floods of tears. What looked like a little elephant had in fact only been dropped a few yards from the car park at the top of the cliffs.
Swansea was a handy stopping point after that - a bit different to its Welsh namesake - but it was now all about the long run into Hobart. Of all the driving we did in Tasmania, less than 5% would have been straight and flat at the same time and those sweeping bends and undulations were never more evident than on the Tasman Highway which hugged rock faces and followed the bends of the Prosser River on the challenging and invigorating approach to the stateâs capital.
Hobart, with a population of 250,000 or so, must be the hilliest city Iâve ever visited. There were cars parked at angles that didnât look natural and even a walk to the closest intersection could be enough to raise a sweat.
But on flat ground a stoneâs throw from the waterfront, the Salamanca Market truly showcases Hobart in its best light every Saturday. From tourist tat and cuddly toys to ornate wood carvings and local farm produce, thereâs something to lighten everyoneâs wallet although by far the longest queues were at the coffee vans. Classic Australia. The pandemic has forced Salamanca to trim its stall numbers and patron capacity, although social distancing in a market is about as likely as it is on the London Underground. However, in a part of the world which is totally COVID-free at the time of writing, mingling in a Tasmanian crowd carries none of the worries it would elsewhere.
Our thoughts were constantly drawn back to the UK not only by the daily news bulletins - reporting daily infection rates higher than Australia has faced in 12 months - but also its role in shaping Tasmania as we know it today. Nowhere is that more evident than Port Arthur, the former penal settlement where thousands of convicts were shipped in the 1800s for crimes ranging from cheese theft to murder. The remains of the penitentiary and neighbouring prison buildings are beautiful; their stories by comparison quite chilling and utterly thought-provoking as to the physical treatment and mental disintegration of so many men, young and old, having been extracted from their homeland with no hope of ever returning. Walking around the site makes you acutely aware of your liberty, even more so in the current climate.
You see, for all the places we visited in Tasmania, for all the experiences, the food tasted and selfies taken, it was simply the freedom to choose and to move which we had to be most thankful for. With the majority of our friends and family locked down on the other side of the world, doing it tougher than ever, there was absolutely nothing about our trip to take for granted.
Itâs said Australia is the lucky country, and that rings true to an extent, although political choices have more to do with the state of play around the world than luck. Australiaâs consistently tough stance on international arrivals during the pandemic has been a huge factor in keeping the COVID numbers here so low. Two week in hotel quarantine, at your own expense, is mandatory. Around the corner from where we were staying in Hobart was one such hotel with two soldiers guarding each door. Rules are rules here and they donât muck about. On the one hand, itâs reassuring that we are in such a safe corner of the world right now - but what about getting back to England to see those loved ones again? When will a journey of that nature be feasible and, more to the point, when will Australia relax its stance to the point where we know we can make a ânormalâ re-entry to the place we now call home? Forget the quarantine, simply getting a plane ticket is like finding a needle in a haystack. We hope to see you all again soon, we really do, but it's just impossible to put a date on that happening.
Meanwhile, sun-kissed Hobart looked a picture from the top of Mount Wellington and equally from the water as we took a ferry to MONA (the Museum of Old and New Art). The exhibits here were all to an incredibly high specification but often weird for the sake of being weird. More rewarding was the time we spent outside in the grounds, watching a band on stage while chowing down on chicken burgers (in the case of the meat-eating members of the family).
Another ferry carried us and the car to Bruny Island, where the pendulum of Tasmanian weather swung like never before. One minute we were slithering along muddy unsealed roads in search of the Cape Bruny Lighthouse (where the winds were too strong to reach the top of the walking track), the next emerging into warm sunlight at the Truganini Memorial overlooking the âNeckâ - a narrow spit of land joining the north and south parts of the island.
After the best part of a week in and around Hobart, it was nice to put the hammer down and cruise through the straw-coloured Midlands on the way north. A long line of red bricks running the length of the high street in Campbell Town bore the names (and crimes) or convicts who had not even survived the epic voyage to Australia, dying in transit. There were reminders everywhere of Tasmaniaâs convict past; less so the treatment of its Indigenous people.
While we had already been exposed to the islandâs varying landscapes and weather patterns, entering Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park can only be likened to walking through the wardrobe into Narnia. Gone was anything even resembling summer as harsh alpine vegetation stood out against steely skies, with a cold wind blowing down the back of the neck in the way that makes you instantly reach for hooded tops. The steep climbs and harpin bends were all worth it just to witness the spectacle at altitude approaching 1,000 metres above sea level. âItâs due to snow the day after tomorrowâ said the girl behind the Visitor Centre counter as she handed over our shuttle bus tickets. You could spend days bushwalking around Cradle Mountain, if you like that sort of thing, whereas we chose the hop- on-hop-off approach and still copped a fair pasting from the wind, rain - and UV. The chance to see Tasmanian devils and quolls up close, as well as a wombat in the car park, further added to the experience.
Back through the wardrobe into summer, or at least a north coast variant of it, and the final stop on our tour at tiny-but-picturesque Boat Harbour Beach. With water so clear you could almost count the grains of sand on the bottom, and rock pools and caves to explore every time the tide flowed out, the beach in itself might have fully sustained our four-day stay had the temperature been a smidgen higher.
As it was, we ventured slightly further afield to The Nut at Stanley (where one of the information boards mused âwhen is a nut not a nut?â - an important consideration for allergy sufferers), Sisters Beach (horizontal rain although not unpleasant) and to Burnie one night to see Little Penguins emerge from the sea and return to their burrows. In rather less salubrious surroundings than the corresponding experience on Phillip Island, the night sky was pierced by the luminescent green glow from a nearby BP filling station. David Attenborough meets Alan Partridge, if you will.
Soon enough, those penguins would be heading back into the Bass Strait and so it was for us, boarding the Spirit of Tasmania for our overnight crossing which marked the end of our Tassie adventure. Housed in a cabin at the extreme bow of the vessel, our plunging path through a sea that was even choppier than normal felt like taking a ride in a washing machine being hit with cannon fire, so loud was the metallic crash of the hull against the waves every few seconds.
So the mouth of Port Phillip Bay had never looked more welcoming and it was a relief to set foot - or rather, wheels - on terra firma back in Melbourne.
But what a journey. In the land that time forgot, the extraordinary diversity and natural beauty of this island have carved out unforgettable memories. The devil is in the detail and Iâve no doubt weâve only scratched the surface.
Oh, what a feeling - Tasmania.

The man accused of killing British backpacker Grace Millane was jeered as he appeared in a packed Auckland court on Monday. Ms Millane, 22, died while travelling in New Zealand and her body was found in bushland on Sunday afternoon, about 30 feet from a highway outside the New Zealand city. The 26-year-old accused, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, appeared in a blue boiler suit as he attended Auckland's District Court on Monday morning. Ms Millane, from Essex, was last seen alive entering the CityLife Hotel with the man last Saturday at 9.41pm. The defendant was listed on a charge sheet as residing at the hotel on Queen Street in central Auckland. In his opening remarks Judge Evangelos Thomas addressed members of Millane's family, some of whom were in attendance. Her father, David Millane, arrived in New Zealand last Friday following his daughter's disappearance. âYour grief must be desperate,â Judge Thomas told the family in court, where every seat was taken by the public and the international and local media. âAll of us hope that justice for Grace is fair and swift and ultimately brings you some peace.â As the defendant was led out of the court, a man at the back of the court yelled out âscumbagâ. Meanwhile, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern became became visibly upset as she apologised to Ms Millane's family at her weekly post-cabinet news conference. "On behalf of New Zealand, I want to apologise to Grace's family," Ms Ardern told a weekly news conference in parliament. Ms Ardern said she could not imagine the grief that her family would be going through, according to Radio New Zealand. âYour daughter should have been safe here and she wasn't and I'm sorry for that.â Ms Ardern told the family through police that the government would offer any assistance it could. Judge Evangelos Thomas speaks as a man accused of Grace Millane's murder appears in court in Auckland Credit: Getty Judge Thomas rejected an application from the accused's lawyer for his client's name to be suppressed based on fair trial rights. However, the decision was immediately appealed, meaning the accused's name will not be released for at least 20 working days until the appeal is determined. The accused looked at the judge for most of the 90 minutes he was in court, nodding that he understood when spoken to, his eyes only occasionally flicking towards the cameras on the other side of the court. The defendant's next appearance will be in the High Court on January 23. Accused 'was estranged from family' The accused was reportedly estranged from his family after his parents separated, according to his grandfather. NZ media organisation Stuff reported that the grandfather, who said he'd helped raise him for a period after his parents separated, was struggling to come to terms with what his grandson had been accused of. âHe was a nice kid, but he sort of fell out with everybody, which is what happens with broken-up marriages.â He was worried about how the allegations would affect the wider family but declined to comment further. A female relative of the accused told Stuff he'd spent time living in Australia, where his mother lived, but she was unaware he'd returned. His paternal grandmother told Stuff that while living in Australia the man fathered a daughter but was no longer in a relationship with the mother. Stuff said the accused's father hadn't spoken to his son for two years, citing: âA difference in opinion on life.â Emotional tributes from family Police have yet to reveal how the pair met or the possible motive for the alleged murder. Security footage at the hotel, along with a scene investigation at a room there, confirmed that Ms Millane was dead.  Detective Inspector Scott Beard said the body was found near Scenic Drive, which leads through the Waitakere Ranges, a popular parkland west of Auckland. Grace Millane was on a year-long round-the-world trip âThis brings the search for Grace to an end,â said Detective Beard, who was visibly emotional delivering the news of the discovery. âIt is an unbearable time for the Millane family and our hearts go out to them.â Ms Millane's family have described her as âlovely, outgoing, fun-loving and family-orientatedâ. Her brother Declan paid public tribute on social media with a series of photographs of Ms Millane smiling, celebrating, graduating and, as a little girl, hugging her sibling. He also wrote the lyrics to the song "you are my sunshine, my only sunshine" underneath pictures of the pair together.  View this post on Instagram ïżœïżœâ„ïžYou are my sunshine, my only sunshine You make me happy when skies are gray You'll never know, dear, how much I love you Please don't take my sunshine away A post shared by Declan Millane (@declan_millane) on Dec 9, 2018 at 2:16am PST Ms Millane, who completed a degree in advertising and marketing at Lincoln University, was on a yearlong trip and arrived in New Zealand on November 20 after a four-week group tour to Peru. Her family raised concerns after she failed to make contact for several days, including on her 22nd birthday last Sunday. Police received a missing person report on Wednesday and commenced a major search and public campaign that saw dozens of calls made to a helpline. David Millane, Graceâs father, arrived in New Zealand on Friday morning and gave a press conference with police, issuing a moving appeal for help. He was joined on the weekend by another family member. Tributes to Grace Millane are left at the roundabout in Titirangi, at the start of Scenic Drive in Auckland Credit: Getty Mr Millane, a property developer, said Ms Millane had typically âbombardedâ the family with messages and photographs during her travels but suddenly went silent after last Saturday. "Grace is a lovely, outgoing, fun-loving, family-orientated daughter," he said. "Grace has never been out of contact for this amount of time. She's usually in daily contact with either her mother, myself, her two brothers or members of the family on social media. "We are all extremely upset and it's very difficult at this time to fully describe the range of emotions we are going through." Police took the 26-year-old man into custody several days ago and have charged him with murder. Detective Inspector Scott Beard speaks at the scene where the body of British tourist Grace Millane was found Credit: Photo by Hannah Peters/Getty Images Detective Beard said the investigation will continue and searches were still underway at the hotel. He would not comment on whether the pair met on the dating app Tinder. "The focus now is to piece together exactly what happened to a young woman who came to New Zealand on her [overseas experience]," he said. Appeal for information Ms Millaneâs body was allegedly transported to the parkland in a red Toyota Corolla hatchback that was rented from a central Auckland firm last Sunday. Police released two photos of the car, which was found in the central North Island town of Taupo, and were appealing for anyone who had seen the vehicle on the morning of Monday, December 3, near the area where the body was found. Expressing condolences to Mr Millane and the family, Detective Beard said: "Any father in this situation is going to struggle. We are putting a lot of support around him. I feel for him, I have a daughter in her twenties.â A 2016 red Toyota Corolla hire car that police are analysing as part of a probe into the death of Grace Millane Credit: PA The case has sent shockwaves across New Zealand, where people expressed outrage and some on social media described the case as a ânational shameâ. It has also raised concerns about violence towards women in the country. Justin Lester, the mayor of Wellington, the capital, said the case was a "horrible and tragic nightmare". "Our girls should be safe to travel and go out and our men should be looking after and protecting them, not causing harm," he said on Twitter.

Shakes and Hash Browns Fuel New Zealanderâs Full-Country Run
Associated Press, Nov. 22, 2018
WELLINGTON, New Zealand--Powered by hash browns and chocolate milkshakes, a New Zealander has run the length of his country in a record time of 18 days and eight hours.
A former drug addict, 64-year-old Perry Newburn is not your typical endurance athlete.
His nutrition plan included plenty of stops at McDonaldâs restaurants. He kept his pace in his head rather than using a fancy GPS watch. And his support crew for half the distance consisted of his mate Graeme driving ahead in Perryâs Toyota Corolla wagon.
But Newburn ran and ran and ran, averaging close to three full marathons each day along the 2,100 kilometer (1,300 mile) journey, which he finished Wednesday. About 50 people ran alongside him at various points, and he raised several thousand dollars for an autism charity.
âTo be able to achieve those kinds of things, you have to be an unusual character,â said Bette Flagler, who supported Newburn along part of the route on the North Island.
Flagler said Newburn had energy to burn in pleasant weather as they posted humorous videos of him skipping and crawling along the highway. But things got more intense toward the end of his journey, as Newburn faced unseasonal snowstorms and hail.
Newburn said he needed to hold his emotions in check until he got to the finish.
âI almost collapsed in a blubbering mess,â he said. âI was just so elated. And happy I didnât have to get up the next morning at silly oâclock.â
Newburn was often on the road at 4 a.m. and ran through each day and into the night. He said he discovered running after he gave up heroin in the early 1990s, following a 16-year battle with the drug.
âRunning was a good way of clearing my head,â he said. âIt was part of the process of getting everything back into the right space again. Rebuilding myself, I suppose.â
Distance runner Lisa Townsend joined Newburn one day for about 74 kilometers (46 miles) before finishing with sore feet while he continued. She said that because they were running along the side of a small highway with many trucks driving past, they needed to keep their wits about them. They passed the time by chatting and counting power poles.
The run wasnât even Newburnâs longest--he has completed a continental crossing of the U.S. In September, he got in some practice by finishing a six-day endurance run in Adelaide, Australia, clocking up 573 kilometers (356 miles) to take fourth place.
Friend Kashif Shuja said Newburn relied on a crumpled 20-year-old paper map to plot his route. Worried that a few weeks out Newburn didnât have so much as a spreadsheet to plan each day, Shuja stepped in to help arrange accommodation, meetings with other runners, and social media.
âMy job was for him not to die, and bring him back safely,â Shuja joked. âWhat heâs done is inspired thousands of people into doing more than they think they can.â
Newburn said that aside from all the blisters and some aches and pains, his body held up well. The best part, he said, was meeting people along the way who ran with him or offered him a bed for the night.
âYou see so much negativity in the world these days, but two or three days on the road and you experience the awesomeness, the positiveness, the generosity of people,â he said. âI get blown away every time.â

I have been here now for 4 months, and to be completely honest, I have totally fallen in love with New Zealand⊠I have decided I definitely want to spend more time here than I had originally planned.
Last week we went on our first road trip of the North Island. We purchased a Toyota Hiace 2000 Van and converted it into a camper van within a week. (Blog Post to Come.)  Kitted out with a new bed, some shelves and a seriously comfortable duvet and bed sheets we where ready for New Zealand. Our road trip covered all of the North Island apart from New Plymouth and Wellington. We slept in Cow fields on the east cape and hopped around volcanic fields near Rotorua. Unfortunately we only had 10 days to do a quick scouting roadie, but it was enough, and has made me super excited to line up a tour  and start gigging around the islands in the coming months.
New Zealand is touring heaven! With open mics spread across the island ready to be lined up into an amazing tour of the most beautiful country on the planet. (Taking Flight will be doing this.)
âThere is literally something to see and do around every cornerâŠâ
The music scene in this remote place is amazing and far better developed than other countries so planning a tour route is not difficult. The most difficult part of touring in New Zealand would have to be pulling yourself out of the mountains and the forests to go to your show. There is literally something to see and do around every corner (and thereâs a lot of corners).
Everything is pretty spaced out, so touring here without your own form of transport would be pretty costly and a logistic nightmare. Our recommendation is to come to New Zealand with money for a camper van in your budget. Your pretty much guaranteed to be able to sell it on at the end of your travels with the amount of backpackers who come here looking for one.
Musicians are no rare sight in New Zealand. Every camp site has at least one or two long haired hipsters with a guitars who are driving around in search of somewhere to play or jam. Especially in the summertime, (December â February) campgrounds and hostels will be packed to the brim, meaning open mic nights will be busy no matter what. However crowds isnât necessarily always a good thing for musicians, for me Id rather 20 people who actually  want to listen and hear my music than the 200 tourists who are in town for a week and couldnât give a shit whoâs playing. If you are a quantity more than quality type of person, hit New Zealand in the peak months, (it still wonât be as busy as other parts of the world) If your a quality over quantity type, waiting until after summer will probably make you feel less like a dancing monkey on stage.
New Zealandâs landscape is highly diverse, traversing from  rough alpine middle earth looking to sun kissed, and tropical in an instance. The ocean changes from dark and unforgiving, to a turquoise green, and the weather can dish out all 4 seasons within an hour. Theres no wonder it has been named the most beautiful place on the planet so many times.
âif shit hits the fan out here, you are on your own..â
For surfers looking to score, the opportunity to find uncrowded waves is endless. If your willing to go off the beaten track and not afraid of paddling out in (sometimes) darker waters, the east cape is home to numerous amounts of beach, reef and point breaks with little or nobody in the water or on the land for that matter.
The waves here can be perfect on their day, with countless types of set-ups, but before paddling out, be sure to know what your doing and where your going. Paddling out alone maybe isnât the best idea, if shit hits the fan out here, you are on your own.. No phone signal and no immediate hospitals or emergency services.
âopportunities to score around every headland..â
The remoteness of some of the waves in New Zealand can make you feel as though your on an episode of Rip Curl âThe Searchâ every time you paddle out. With opportunities to score around every headland. Get your location and weather conditions right, and you will be rewarded with world class waves in turquoise waters in an amazing setting (Middle Earth). The Island isnât very wide so driving from east to west only takes a few hours at the worst, meaning there is almost a 360 degrees swell window here. If one side of the Island is Onshore and Blown out, its likely somewhere on the opposite side of the Island is offshore and pumping.
Its safe to say no matter what your expectations are when coming here, they will be met and exceeded at the very least.
New Zealand â Touring Heaven I have been here now for 4 months, and to be completely honest, I have totally fallen in love with New Zealand...
