Top 6 Best Exhausts for the Toyota GR-86 / Subaru BRZ
At Vivid Racing, we love to be your plug for the best advice, recommendations, and car products on the market. We don’t shy away from giving our expert opinion and continue to do so to all car enthusiasts who reach out to us and read our blogs. When it comes to the Toyota GR-86 / Subaru BRZ, we have shared the best coilover suspension upgrades, the most underrated upgrades for the 2.4L Boxer, and more. Today, we are going to share the top 6 exhaust upgrades meant to increase horsepower and torque hence improving performance, enhance throttle response, and provide a more aggressive exhaust note and we have videos to prove this.
So, if you own the 2.4L Boxer, here are the best exhaust upgrades that you should go for. We are sharing 6 of them so that you have more options, and brands to choose from.
1.) VRP 3-Inch Titanium Catback Exhaust
Made by our very own, VR Performance, this is our first recommendation because it is one of the lightest and budget-friendly Titanium Cat-Back options. You know what if a titanium one isn’t what you prefer, just to give you more options, you can save (almost) ALL the money by going for a Stainless Steel Catback Exhaust one. But if you are still reading this, hence interested in knowing more about the Titanium one, you should know that it solves two issues found in the stock exhaust;
It delivers the glorious rumble that a stock exhaust fails to
Eliminates the hindering back pressure created by the factory system
With no modification required for installation, the VRP 3-inch Titanium Catback Exhaust Subaru BRZ | Scion FRS | Toyota GT86/GR86 2013+ will unlock the true tone of the 2.4L boxer engine.
2.) MRT Street Race Header Back Exhaust System
We recommend this second option because we know that your engine deserves to be heard. This American-made Street Race Header Back Exhaust System by MRT Engineered Performance will give your car that loud ramble it has been missing. What makes this system special is the fact that it was engineered for the best sound to match your 86 and it also increases performance from increased exhaust flow, on top of it being manufactured using a corrosion-resistant T304 Stainless Steel. If you want to set yourself apart on the road, this is the system to go for.
youtube
3.) ARMYTRIX Valvetronic Exhaust System Toyota GR86 2022+ | Subaru BRZ 2.4L Non-OPF
We wouldn’t be recommending the best products on the market if we didn’t mention an exhaust from Armytrix. So our third recommendation for you is the ARMYTRIX Valvetronic Exhaust System Toyota GR86 2022+ | Subaru BRZ 2.4L Non-OPF 2013+. The brand is known for manufacturing quality exhausts with high-end features and their signature sound. Apart from the deep, sporty sound which as seen in the video below, should be enough to convince you to grab this Valvetronic exhaust, this system will also deliver a reduction in weight and an increase in power especially in the low and mid-rev range.
youtube
4.) HKS Legamax Sports ZN8 | ZD8 FA24 Toyota GR-86 | Subaru BRZ 2022+
Our fourth option is from a brand that is well-versed with the Toyota GR-86, and we have recommended their products for a full GR86 build before, CLICK HERE to check them out. When it comes to manufacturing high-performance products, HKS never disappoints, matter of fact the HKS Legamax Sports ZN8 | ZD8 FA24 Toyota GR-86 | Subaru BRZ 2022+ (seen in the video below) has us scratching our heads wondering, is this the most refined exhaust option? Here’s why we think so, this system is guaranteed to provide excellent exhaust efficiency as it delivers a sporty sound in the high rpm range, accompanied by a modest sound at the low rpm range all this while having a low back pressure, if that won’t have you wondering the same too, we don’t know what will.
youtube
5.) Quicksilver Sport Exhaust System with Sound Architect Toyota GR-86 | Yaris 2020+
Our fifth recommendation is the Quicksilver Sport Exhaust System with Sound Architect Toyota GR-86 | Yaris 2020+ which was manufactured to please all enthusiasts with its bass-heavy presence and rising note under acceleration. The thing that differentiates this system from others in the list, is the fact that you have both sound options, Quiet or Loud – at the touch of a button. The quiet mode provides sound similar to the stock system but the loud mode, the loud mode is the main reason this system made the list, Check out this video below to see what we mean.
Features:
Significant weight reduction – OE system is 12.9 kgs QuickSilver is 8.9 kgs.
Easy Installation – Literally ‘Plug & Play’.
Carbon-Fibre Tips – Black carbon tips to match the roof and other black elements.
The Sound – A massive improvement see below.
This system fits the GR86, and the Toyota Yaris 2020-2022. Bet you didn’t expect this one… GR Yaris has entered the conversation and has some authority at this table. Keep in mind, that the GR Yaris is equipped with a 1.6L turbocharged three-cylinder motor (G16E-GTS), similar to the stateside GR Corolla. The flat-four Boxer engine (FA20) will output a very different sound, but this video will give you an idea of the luxury quality standards being produced by the Quicksilver brand.
youtube
6.) Tomei Exprem Ti Full Type-D Titanium Muffler Kit
Would this be a proper buyer guide if Tomei didn’t have a seat at the table? Here’s how they earned it. Manufactured by Tomei, this system was made with overall engine performance gains in mind. When it comes to its design, every tube’s length and size were carefully crafted to maximize torque, response, and exhaust flow efficiency from start to finish. Manufactured using the best Titanium grade materials, this high-quality system is also light, hence causing a weight reduction. When it comes to manufacturing the Exprem Ti system, the brand pt to use their knowledge, and decades-long of experience to make sure that they deliver unrivled system for your GR86.
youtube
We made sure to cover the best in this guide, but you know what we also answer any lingering questions you may have about Toyota GT-86 | Subaru BRZ, so please do not hesitate to contact us for questions or if you need more information on products in our shop. Toyota GR 86 Gazoo Concept, 2021. Gazoo Racing’s parts division have revealed their range parts for the new generation GR86. There’s a new front fascia with an extended splitter and carbon fibre accents to increase front-end downforce as well as an inlet duct above the grille that acts as a ram intake for the engine. Air outlets on the front wheel arches remove turbulent air. The wheel arches have been widened by 43 mm while side skirts reduce drag. At the rear there’s a carbon fibre diffuser and rear wing in addition to a new exhaust system designed to improve efficiency. The concept rides on a set of 19-inch forged aluminium wheels

This Aggressive Gazoo Racing GR 86 Concept Came from Inside Toyota Toyota's performance-minded branch pulls no punches taking on tuners.
Gazoo Racing, or GR, is the performance-minded branch of Toyota that was started by Akio Toyoda well before he moved into his role as company President, and it is everywhere these days. Those two letters carry quite a bit of weight, having ended up on much talked about Toyota models like the A90/91 Supra; turbocharged mighty mite Yaris; and now, the upcoming 86. Speaking of the 86, there've been a handful of concept models developed by some very high-profile Japanese tuners of late, and Gazoo Racing doesn't much feel like sitting on the sidelines while they take its lunch. GR therefore is diving into the GR 86 tuning fray to show what it's capable of, and the concept you see here has everyone talking.
You can tell Gazoo Racing didn't hold back on the GR (Gazoo Racing) 86—and, yes, its name is somewhat redundant. The sharp, angular, in-your-face additions give a beefier touch to the svelte silhouette of the new GR 86. Where the factory model's face is borderline cutesy, with its wide-eyed headlights and smiling mouth, the Gazoo Racing concept cuts some Joker-style scars onto its visage.
There is a set of canards that slash through the original side vents and point toward an elongated duct which replaces the top portion of the honeycomb grille. The lower portion of the grille is partially covered by a large, flat carbon fiber lip that dives down on each end, wraps under both corner intakes and takes a sharp, 90 degrees turn upward to create a winglet.
That carbon-fiber "mustache" extends the front end quite a bit, but the body-matched splitter that sits front and center takes that line out even further. Lastly, a pair of vents are carved into the hood near the windshield. Put this Gazoo Racing version next to the factory front end, and it looks downright pissed off. Part of the anger resonating from the concept's front end is the added girth by way of the large, swooping overfenders. The muscular shoulders incorporate a vent both on top and behind the front wheels to mitigate turbulence in these high-pressure areas. The rear quarter panels get the widened treatment as well, and the car's measurements jump up by about 1.7 inches in width.
Those fenders house 19-inch wheels that carry a somewhat out-of-place polished/machined look; of all the changes to the car, these rims seem to suit the 86 the least. Their sizing feels right, especially with the modified suspension placing the car much lower than stock, and the open spoke design highlights the bright red GR calipers—but something tells us bronze, gold, or even matte black would have tied into the theme more thoroughly.
Bulging fenders and the aggressive wheel and tire package would have looked silly without something in place to connect both ends. For that, Gazoo Racing included side diffusers complete with winglets and rear vents to bring the car's rib cage closer to the ground and help bridge the gap between front and rear.
Divide And Conquer
If you're one of the many who have complained that the new GR 86 and Subaru BRZ rear ends are a bit too plain, this concept might change your mind. With a set of uprights mounted to the trunk lid, a carbon fiber wing is perched almost at roof level, and that subtle lip spoiler that we've seen on a few other concepts is left out of this version entirely. The rear bumper is all new, sporting quad exhaust finishers, a more dramatic partition where the license plate is mounted, and a rear diffuser armed with four razor sharp fins that sit precariously close to earth. Being that Gazoo Racing had a hand in the car's original development, no one expected such a radical concept to hatch from Toyota's tuning arm, but that's what makes this concept so intriguing.
But Wait, There's More!
A second concept GR 86 was developed in Gazoo Racing's lab, this version taking the threat level down a few clicks. (It's pictured immediately above.) Gone is the towering rear wing, over fenders, and the slice and dice of canards and diffusers, replaced by more traditional parts. Still, even toned down, the styling cues are still there, especially with the side skirts, quad exhaust with back bumper treatment, and even the wheel design. This concept feels more in line with what could potentially be offered in a Toyota optional parts catalog in the future, though hopefully that fuel filler cover is left out of the mix.

BRZ STI tweaks give the latest Subaru coupe a (non-turbo) boost
Tumblr media
Since the Subaru BRZ has been hatched a rumour generator has been churning out rumours that there’s a turbo charge STI variant in advancement. Subaru even revealed an idea version in the ‘States in 2015, but the factory provides so far resisted the enticement to build a production BRZ STI in spite of the obvious pent-up demand among legions associated with fans.
Meanwhile, the second-gen BRZ was revealed in November 2020 - today joined by its Toyota GRMS 86 sister-model - and as you’d anticipate the STI crew are actually dabbling with a few go-faster goodies for the domestic marketplace.
This particular first wave of STI parts for Japanese proprietors include an in-your-face co2 rear wing for the back deck, a set of 18-inch BBS alloys, and a performance exhaust which presumably will bring several extra decibels and/or bhp to the BRZ party : details on either front are yet to be confirmed.
There are other exterior upgrades too, including front and rear splitters, wheel arch winglets and a roof-mounted vortex generator .
The STI team have also confirmed the particular continuing availability of a versatile V bar engine these types of strut brace, which additionally, it offers for the first-gen BRZ. On the old car it is said to increase steering reaction and average vehicle rate through a slalom by 1 ) 4 per cent, while delivering at least a 30 % increase in your under-bonnet hocuspocus factor. (We made the final bit up. )
In any event, we reckon the latest BRZ definitely benefits from the additional visual impact of the larger wheels and aero improvements. But there’s still area for Subaru to go a great deal further to give its most recent BRZ a bit more STI essence, and we guess there’ll become plenty more to come with regards to style and performance enhancements for the latest coupe.
Unfortunately, the next BRZ won’t end up being sold officially in European countries due to emissions considerations -- although Toyota will allow us to get our hands on the particular GR 86.

Top 3 Best Exhaust Options for the Toyota GR Corolla 2023+
Tumblr media
1.) AWE Touring and Track Exhaust Suite
After the successful release of the Toyota GR-86 exhaust kit from AWE, these were highly anticipated and long-awaited among the GR Corolla community. The optional Track and Touring conversion kits truly make this an enticing kit to have the ability to quickly convert either your Touring to Track option or vis versa. From the sounds of the video, the Track Edition is ROWDY! It’s very much an opened-up rally car vibe. It’s probably not everyone’s taste, but this might be your best option if you’re in the market for making your GR Corolla every bit of full-tilt. Pair it with a Touring conversion kit, and you will have the best of both worlds! If 4″ tips are big enough in 2024, how about a 4.5″ x 8″ center oval that, quite literally, screams motorsports out the back of your Gazoo Racing hatch.

  2.) HKS Legamax Sports Exhaust 4BA-GZEA14H 2023+
Of course, HKS is going to show up for Toyota’s GR Corolla. When I say show up, they made a damn beautiful exhaust kit! In typical HKS fashion, the Japanese legends brought some magical JDM engineering into the conversation. With this kit, you get their “Exhaust Error Canceller,” and what that does is squash any error code that may triggered by not having any active valves. HKS opted for a dual-tip construction instead of the three-tip OEM design. This left room for some styling by adding a branded HKS bracket that is placed just insight of where the OEM center tip would be placed.
youtube
Shop the HKS Legamax Sports Exhaust Kit
Features:
Valve-less, Dual Tail Tip Layout: This exhaust system features a valve-less design and dual tail tip layout. The large-diameter titanium slash tailpipe creates a commanding rear view, leaving a strong impression compared to the stock exhaust.
Sturdy and Aesthetic Bracket Placement: Brackets connecting the left and right silencers are positioned at the center notch and feature the HKS logo, ensuring both visual appeal and structural integrity.
Includes “EXHAUST ERROR CANCELLER”: HKS provide an “EXHAUST ERROR CANCELLER” to prevent error codes when the valve is not in use, allowing for a worry-free experience.
Smooth and Enjoyable Driving: Experience a comfortable and noise-free ride at low revs. The overall sound quality is robust, delivering a deep bass sound that intensifies as the revs increase, providing a powerful auditory experience.
The tail features a powerful 119 titanium tail with two left and right-hand tailpipes, creating a seamless and bulb-less layout.
A bracket is expertly positioned at the factory center tail section, with the HKS logo laser engraved for added aesthetics. The HKS logo is visible from the bumper notch in the rear view, showcasing the installation of the HKS exhaust.
While the stock exhaust valve opens to reduce exhaust resistance at high RPM, this product is valve-less and incorporates a straight structure inside the silencer, resulting in a 40% reduction in exhaust resistance compared to the stock valve when open.
We’ve achieved precise control of sound volume through meticulous sound engineering. Even without valve-less valves, there is no muffled sound in the mid-range RPM range, providing a comfortable driving experience. Enjoy a sporty sound throughout the entire RPM range, from low to high revs.
To avoid any issues related to valve-less operation, we provide the “EXHAUST ERROR CANCELER” with your purchase. This ensures a stress-free and worry-free driving experience.
3.) Remark Catback Exhaust Elite Spec Quad Tip
Coming in with the added tip is Remark with their TITANIUM QUAD TIP Elite Spec exhaust kit for the GR Corolla. I’m not sure if there was some extra spice up-stream of this exhaust on their test car, but this exhaust sounds absolutely incredible! Sizing up to 3″ diameter and 4″ tips seems to really open this system up. We can also appreciate this kit utilizing the stock valves from Toyota.
Something to note from Remark – “*You will be using factory donut gasket and spring-bolts where connects to factory OEM piping.”
youtube
Shop Remark Titanium Quad-Tip Exhaust Kit
Features:
Exhaust Type: Catback Exhaust – Bolt on 2pc design
Piping Diameter: 3inch, GR2 Titanium mandrel bent pipe
Tip Diameter: Outer: 4″ Titanium Tips, Center: Dual 4″ Titanium Tips
Piping Material: GR2 Titanium
Exhaust Tip: Outer: Single Wall tip design Polished Stainless Steel, Center: Burned Titanium Cover tip
Muffler Material: GR2 Titanium
Muffler: 1 Canister Muffler at rear, 1 resonator located on the mid-pipe
Welding: Handcrafted high-quality TIG welding
All-in-all the three of these exhaust options for the Toyota GR Corolla are all great. They are each unique in their own ways and we truly believe you will be on track to getting your GR to sound the way you want with any of these options! We know some more exciting options are in the pipeline, so we will keep you updated with the latest and greatest for this hot hatch!

Toyota GR Yaris: The Ultimate Pocket Rocket
Tumblr media
Rally racing is one of the most intense and dangerous forms of motorsport out there. Breakneck speeds on cliff-side dirt roads, a co-driver yelling directions over the deafening roar of a straight pipe exhaust and unpredictable road and weather conditions are all potential walls to remaining focused and retaining control of the vehicle. Everything needs to be executed immaculately. All in what is essentially a modified street car. It is a true test of pure driver skill and driver/co-driver teamwork.
Official rally events have a strict set of rules and regulations to ensure a fair competition. One of the universal requirements is that the competing vehicle is based on a production street car in the real world with at least 25,000 built units. Frequently rally-converted cars include the Ford Focus/Fiesta, Subaru WRX and Volkswagen Golf/Polo. This is where the 2021 GR Yaris comes into the picture. It is a high-performance hot hatch, designed to be the perfect platform for rally racing. The end goal for Toyota is to have a new vehicle to compete with in the World Rally Championship, by converting a GR Yaris into WRC (world rally car) specification, thus replacing the current Yaris WRC. To do so, Toyota first needs to build and sell the GR Yaris to the public as a street car.
Tumblr media
Current Yaris WRC used for competing in the World Rally Championship
2021 GR Yaris
Performance
GR, which stands for Gazoo Racing, is Toyota’s in-house performance division. While most offerings from Gazoo Racing are essentially modified versions of currently existing models, enhanced with various performance parts to improve the driving experience, the GR Yaris is a different car from a standard Yaris at the core. Its chassis is a hybrid between that of a regular Yaris (as sold in Europe, Japan and Australia- not the re-badged Mazda 2 “Yaris” sold in the US) and of a Corolla/C-HR. This new platform features more weld points and structural adhesive, rendering the GR Yaris as more than your average performance-enhanced hatchback.
Tumblr media
GR Yaris racing through sand and gravel
Aside from a new chassis, the GR Yaris is longer, wider, lower and more lightweight than a standard Yaris. And then there’s the engine. Under the hood is now officially the world’s most powerful three cylinder engine: a turbo 1.6 liter that makes up to 257 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. Linked to the engine is a standard six-speed manual transmission, and an advanced 4WD system that can modulate torque delivery between the front and rear half of the car. It can be front-wheel-biased, 50/50 balanced, or rear-wheel-biased. All depends on the type of thrill you are seeking in the moment. An optional Circuit Pack adds performance suspension, big brake rotors and calipers, lightweight wheels and high-grip tires to compliment the power and structural rigidity.
Test Drive Impressions
Test drivers at Top Gear took the GR Yaris out for a spin, and had nothing but praise for its driving dynamics: “It’s a short, broad, stiff car. The heavily strengthened bodyshell means zero creaks and rattles and gives the suspension a rigid central core to work from. The GR Yaris doesn’t feel anything like a standard Yaris when you get in. It feels robust... small and light. With punchy dynamics and a gutsy motor, it’s a deeply compelling machine... an addictive experience. The best Toyota we’ve ever driven.”
Motor Trend also had the chance to experience the GR Yaris, and the drivers there were left with a positive impression as well: “The GR Yaris feels like a car developed by race engineers. The brakes are superb, the steering is accurate and well weighted. But what’s most impressive is how smoothly the GR Yaris gets into corners… and how concisely it tracks through them. You can go to power much earlier than in any of its front- or even all-wheel-drive rivals and let the differentials do their thing. Just steer where you want to go, and the GR Yaris will go there. There isn't a hot hatch on the planet that gets out of corners as quickly and confidently as this Toyota.”
Design
The exterior design looks very aggressive. Inward slanted headlights and a big rectangular grille make for an angry face that would certainly catch attention on the road. The fenders are nicely pronounced, with the two door configuration helping make way for beautifully wide rear fenders, effectively giving it a widebody look. The hood has a bulge in the middle, further accentuating it as a performance car. Overall, the GR Yaris looks like a proper performance hatchback, shamelessly boasting its motorsport roots.

The interior is simple, to-the-point, and driver-focused. A well-bolstered leather steering wheel, round leather gear-shift knob, physical e-brake, aluminum pedals, suede bucket seats and a simple, distraction-free dashboard all make for an interior that looks ready to provide for the hooning needs of a car enthusiast.

Conclusion
From the experiences of the test drivers at Top Gear and Motor Trend, one thing is clear: The GR Yaris is a genuine thrill machine. It can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds and has a top speed of 143 mph, which are decent performance numbers, but the numbers don’t matter so much with a car like this. What matters most is the feeling of the driving experience. With a small, compact performance hatchback, you usually get a well-controlled, agile and responsive ride that feels faster than it actually is. The GR Yaris, with it being a proper hot hatch, is built to induce a total adrenaline rush, and according to the drivers at Motor Trend, it “feels quicker” than its actual acceleration and top speed. They explain this as “a function of size… you simply don't expect a car smaller than a Corolla to deliver the neck-snapping launch and determined acceleration of the GR Yaris.”
Unfortunately, the GR Yaris will not be sold in the US, but the 86 and Supra are both available, and are heart-pounding enthusiast’s cars as well. When converted from British Pounds, the starting price is around $40,000 and the Circuit Pack model is around $45,000.
With its rally roots, the GR Yaris has a robust structure that is capable of traversing at speed both on and off-road. The world is for the taking in Toyota’s new hot hatch.

Toyota Launches Sporty GR Sub-Brand for Japan
Toyota has announced that it will launch the GR Sport Series sub-brand in Japan to bolster its lineup of sporty cars. The debut of the GR Series follows that of the Yaris GRMN in Europe earlier this year at the 2017 Geneva auto show. In addition to the Japanese market, Toyota plans to expand the GR Series of vehicles outside of its home market with Europe being a likely candidate. There will be three levels of performance in Toyota’s GR Series lineup. The GR Sport is the entry-level model, followed by the mid-tier GR, and then the range-topping GRMN. Toyota will leverage knowledge and data gained from racing its vehicles at events like the 24 Hours of Nurburgring and the All-Japan Rally Championship. In the beginning, Toyota will roll out a GR variant of the Japanese market Vitz (Yaris in the U.S.), and 86 while the Prius Prime, Harrier, Mark X, and Noah will be available in GR Sport guise. GR stands for Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s racing arm in Japan. At the top of the range will be the Vitz GRMN, essentially the Japanese-spec version of the Yaris GRMN. It will feature the same 1.8-liter supercharged I-4, limited-slip differential, sport seats, Sachs shock absorbers, and BBS alloy wheels. The Toyota 86 GR will receive a unique aero kit, Sachs shock absorbers, Recaro sport seats, Rays alloy wheels, more powerful brakes, and a single exhaust tip. Key changes to GR Series vehicles include a new grille, GR-branded sport seats, silver accent stitching, and a unique engine start/stop button. The base GR Sport models add a sportier suspension tune, additional bracing, a unique tachometer, black shifter, aluminum pedals, and a smaller steering wheel. GR models get an even more aggressive suspension tune with Sachs shocks, additional spot welding and bracing, a smaller steering wheel, and a manual shift mode in CVT models that mimics a 10-speed automatic. Along with the GR Series launch, Toyota will also launch the GR Garage shop as a place for auto enthusiasts to gather. They will replace the Area 86 shops in Japan, totaling 39 GR Garage locations. Road Tests: 2020 Toyota Supra
Vital Statistics
Engine: 3.0 liter
Horsepower: 335
Torque: 365 lb-ft.
0-60 mph: 4.4 seconds
1/4 mile: 12.8 seconds @ 111 mph
EPA: 24 mpg city / 31 mpg highway
Energy Impact: 12.7 barrels of oil/yr
CO2 Emissions: 5.5 tons/yr
This one certainly has been a long time coming, the all-new Toyota Supra. And we already feel sorry for it, Even though most folks have never even drove its predecessor, the new car has to live up to thousands of blog posts and twitter feeds longing for its return.. surely this new Supra will have a tough time being measured against all that hype…or will it?
Remember the Scion FR-S, aka, the Toyota 86? It was co-developed with Subaru. Two companies looking to mutually benefit from creating an inexpensive, back to basics rear drive sport coupe. Well, the 2020 Toyota GR Supra is a much loftier proposition, so Toyota needed a partner to match.
Enter, BMW. Yes, as I’m sure you’ve heard by now, the all-new Supra shares an architecture with the BMW Z4 roadster.
And, most enthusiasts will be happy to know an inline-6, which just happens to be a BMW specialty, returns. Yes, it’s no 2JZ, but Toyota did their own software for both the 3.0-liter and its 8-speed automatic transmission. Turbo-aided output is 335-horsepower and 365 lb-ft. of torque.
But, don’t throw this off as a BMW clone. Actually, it was spearheaded by the same Toyota chief engineer that oversaw the FR-S/BR-Z; and in similar fashion, both Toyota and BMW started with a basic modular chassis, but went their separate ways from there, though the Supra is assembled on the same Austrian assembly line as the Z4.
Engineered by Toyota’s GAZOO racing team, the Supra is truly a car in need of a track. Fortunately, the national press intro was right in our backyard at West Virginia’s Summit Point Motorsports Park.
On track, a Macpherson strut front, and 5-arm multi-link rear suspension, along with adaptive variable dampers, keep the Supra well composed.
Click things over to Sport mode, and it really comes alive; throttle response is heightened, shifts from the automatic become quicker, steering becomes sharper, the active rear differential gets more aggressive, and the artificially enhanced engine and crackly exhaust notes permeates the cabin a bit more.
Rear drive of course, the electronically controlled active diff. can send the full amount to power to the outside wheel to give you the most drive off of corners; but it also works to help settle the rear under hard braking.
Brembo brakes were more than up to the task of cutting speed in a hurry, to get through the Shenandoah Circuit’s many low speed corners.
Plenty of power for coming out of turns; it almost feels like someone shoved a V8 into an 86.
Manually triggering shifts, worked quite well, though not so well that we didn’t wish for a true manual. You don’t have to try too hard to find some oversteer out of corners; and while there was a little more softness and roll than we’d like, it just adds to the great overall feedback.
With a claimed 0-60 of just 4.1-seconds it’s the fastest production Toyota ever; and not to worry, the exhaust sounds are nothing like a BMW, or any other Toyota really, more like something conjured up in a tuner shop. Our best run, 4.4 seconds, was only slightly off.
Launch control ensures you get the best out of it, and keeping the throttle pinned for the full ¼-mile resulted in a time of 12.8–seconds at 111 miles-per-hour.
Body panels are a mixed-metaphor of aluminum and steel. It looks much smaller in person; racy enough without going full fast and furious. Some air passageways are functional, most are not. 19-inch wheels come shod with Michelin Pilot Super Sports.
Away from the track, in normal mode, not unlike the 86, it’s a quite pleasant daily driver. Only big bumps cause any shutter. Seats are low, however, so you feel like you’re straining to see over the dash.
The BMW influence is strongest inside. Perhaps Toyota could have contributed a little more here, but that would have added a lot more onto the price. You do get a unique steering wheel and shifter; though operation of it is just like BMW. Seats are also distinctive and quite nice. And yes, that means there’s iDrive to contend with too.
Government Fuel Economy Ratings are 24-City, 31-Highway, and 26-Combined.  We averaged 29.3 miles-per-gallon on Premium. Making an average Energy Impact Score of 12.7-barrels of yearly oil use, with 5.5 tons of CO2 emissions.
The Supra is a much more serious performance car than the 86; so, price is equally higher, starting at $50,920. By the way, a Z4 is almost 13 grand more.
For some, especially internet haters, nothing short of bringing back the last A80 would have satisfied them. But, if they’d give this 5th gen Supra a chance, they’d learn that like many of us Americans, despite the European roots, it has become something entirely different. So don’t think of the 2020 Toyota GR Supra as a continuation of what we had before, rather it’s an amazing melting pot of something uniquely awesome.

2020 Toyota Supra Performance: Horsepower, Suspension, and TRD
The European-market 2019 BMW Z4 and global-market 2020 Toyota Supra share the same BMW B5830M1 3.0-liter DOHC 24-valve twin-scroll single-turbo inline-six. It’s a proper straight-six tribute to the five previous Supras (six if you include the 2000GT) and a perfect successor. This aluminum engine makes 335 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. Due to emissions regulations in Europe (started in September 2018), this version of the B58 engine includes soot-scrubbing gasoline particulate filters that result in higher exhaust backpressure and lower horsepower production.
There are no such particulate regulations (yet) in the U.S., so our free-breathing Z4 M40i will get the 382-hp B5830O1 version of the engine, which makes the same 369 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately, our in-market Supra retains the EU filters and the resulting output. They both share the same ZF 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability, spinning an electronically controlled clutch-pack differential between the rear wheels. There will be no manual transmission, at least initially. Although both cars feature a launch-control mode, the engine control unit, transmission, and differential are tuned to each manufacturer’s desires.
Expect acceleration to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds.
As many of the best sports cars do, the 2020 Supra has a MacPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension with anti-roll bars. Aluminum control arms bolt to the front subframe, and a combination of aluminum and steel is used at the rear. Driver-selectable multimode dampers provide readily distinct settings among Normal, Sport, and Sport+ modes. Besides suspension damping, those modes also affect stability control, throttle tip-in, exhaust tone, gear changes, and steering weight/quickness. Toyota brags of the Supra’s 50/50 weight distribution and a low center of gravity—despite its upright straight-six.
At just 97.2 inches (a current 911 is 96.5 inches), the Supra’s wheelbase is 4.0 inches tighter than that of a Toyota 86. Front and rear track width (62.8/62.6 inches) are wider by 3.0 and 2.0 inches, respectively. The Supra-bespoke Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires (255/35R19 front, 275/35R19 rear) are both wider and far more aggressive than those of the 86. So not only is the Supra’s footprint “squarer,” but it also adds 200mm (7.9 inches) in width of grippier tire rubber relative to its sporty coupe sibling.
When Stock Is Not Enough…
What about those folks for whom stock is not enough? Coetzee hinted we can expect warranty-backed TRD (Toyota Racing Development) parts, and maybe even a TRD Special Edition. “You’re going to see a number of parts available on the vehicle,” he said. “You may see some TRD parts. You may see some Gazoo Racing–branded parts. And I expect parts from the aftermarket, free of our support.”
Gazoo Racing was founded in 2015 to coalesce all of Toyota’s various racing programs under one virtual roof. MotorTrend’s bet is on Gazoo to be the performance upgrade for Supra. They campaigned a Supra race car last year as part of the car’s development. Besides, the 2020 Supra already has a GR badge, and there are or have been other Toyotas with GRMN (Gazoo Razing Meisters of Nürburgring) badging available elsewhere.
Whether the new-gen Supra might make a reappearance in the next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, also expected in 2020, Coetzee couldn’t say. It would be a natural fit, and if it does land the role, let’s just hope the sticker package is better this time around.
The Supra is clearly important to Toyota, if not for Toyota. “We have rather modest volume expectations, in line with where we see the realities of the market for sports cars today,” Coetzee said. “Still, for us, we feel it’s important to do the vehicle and to be back at the game again. It has a special place within our lineup.”

Toyota GR Performance Sub-Brand Launched in Japan

BRZ STI tweaks give the latest Subaru coupe a (non-turbo) boost

New Post has been published on http://topauto.site/toyota-introduced-a-ran/
Toyota introduced a range of "sports" models with the prefix GR
Toyota has finally created a single unit for the creation of “charged” versions of production cars that will work around the world. Base served as the Motorsport Department Gazoo Racing, which previously was involved in the construction of racing cars and tuning cars for the Japanese market. In Japan will begin wide-scale offensive of the new sub-brand GR, the activity of which consists of four directions.
In the base of the pyramid — have an existing OU GR Parts, which produces the “sport” parts for the aftermarket. A notch — ready machine with the prefix GR Sport, they have a minimal set of differences from the production models. This modified bumpers with wide air intakes, nameplates, wheel, decorative inlays in the cabin aluminum lining on the pedals and the wheel of smaller diameter. Technical improvements — only slightly reinforced body and different suspension tuning.
Package GR Sport had emerged from six models of Toyota for the Japanese market: the hatchback Vitz (Japanese version of the European model Yaris), hybrid liftback Prius PHV, Mark X sedan, Harrier crossover and minivan twins Voxy and Noah. And in winter, this company will join the hatchback Toyota Aqua and Prius MPV alpha.
Prefix GR implies a more serious revision, so ready, only one such model is a hatchback Toyota Vitz GR. He’s got a modified suspension with shock absorbers Sachs, stretching between the front uprights and new control program and a CVT (manual mode includes ten fixed gear), although it is possible to choose and “mechanics”. Toyota Vitz GR offered only with the engine 1.5 (109 HP), which was established on the “normal” version, but in the beginning of the year was removed from the Japanese range. The price of this hatchback — 20600 dollars.
In winter, the Japanese market will also be released coupe Toyota 86 GR, although this version was in the domestic market before. The two-litre boxer engine remains almost standard, but it will be a retuned suspension with shock absorbers Sachs, reinforced brakes (in line chetyrehporshnevye front and rear), Torsen limited-slip differential, new exhaust system, Recaro seats, forged wheels and a body kit.
Well, the most “advanced” cars and the new units will have the prefix GRMN (Gazoo Racing Masters of Nürburgring), and the first swallow, the Japanese showed at the motor show in Frankfurt is a “hot” hatchback, the Toyota Yaris GRMN, which we have already described in detail. In Europe these cars will start selling at the end of this year, and next spring a similar “lighter” under the name Vitz GRMN will appear in Japan.
Interestingly, in the domestic market such modification was already released four years ago: the machine is equipped with 1.5 turbo engine (152 HP). But now Vitz GRMN will have compressor “four” 1.8 capacity of 210 HP European Yaris with the same engine will be able to change “hundred” in 6.3 with: apparently, the dynamics of the Japanese version will be worse.
To promote the sub-brand GR in Japan by March next year, will open with 39 specialty stores GR Garage that will sell as finished vehicles and original spare parts. However, details about the international markets of the company are not misleading: the European hot hatch Yaris GRMN will remain the sole representative of a new division outside of Japan.
By the way, Toyota has another sports brand TRD (Toyota Racing Development), which first promoted in motorsports. But then for some reason, its development has been discontinued and is now only active in USA and some Asian countries where you can buy “officially approved” aftermarket accessories under this brand name. About the future of the TRD brand in the company while also not misleading: it is possible that he will cease to exist.
