AKIRA TORIYAMA STEPS IN FOR KRILLIN'S SAKE
Unlike in the DBS anime continuity where the Kamikaze Fireballs have an obsession with a false idea of love, manga chapter 36 of the Tournament of Power Arc reveals that the Kamikaze Fireballs are obsessed with beauty standards.
But, did you know that Toyotaro's original draft was different from what we got? He even had Krillin call Ribrianne fat & ugly before we got the final product.
TOYOTARO'S DRAFT âïž
Yup. And after revealing that the beauty standards are reversed, Toyotaro planned to have Ribrianne notice Krillin and call him "gorgeous."
In effect, Toyotaro was calling Krillin extremely ugly. That was his "joke." Toyotaro is not very good at comedy.
HOWEVER... Toriyama steps in to fix things, changing Toyotaro's original dialogue.
TORIYAMA'S CORRECTIONS đ
Toyotaro attempted to mischaracterize Krillin by making him rude towards women. Toriyama has never written Krillin like that. Toyotaro attempted to call Krillin ugly. Toriyama has never called Krillin ugly.
In fact, the "kuri" part of Krillin's name is a pun meaning chestnut & references his bald head. "Kuri" can also mean monastery kitchen & Krillin trained at a monastery. Also,"kuri-kuri" is onomatopoeia for something cute and round; like the shape of Krillin's eyes & face. And "kurikuri" can mean bald like Krillin's shaved head. Only ppl who dislike Krillin have called him ugly.
TOYOTARO'S ORIGINAL INTENT: Krillin calls Ribrianne ugly, then after we are told that their beauty standards are reversed, Ribrianne practically says that Krillin is the ugliest man she's ever seen.
TORIYAMA'S CORRECTION: Krillin never insults Ribrianne & only acknowledges the beauty standards that he's familiar with & he assumes Universe 2's standards are different. Then, Whis says beauty is subjective. Next, Beerus calls Ribrianne "kinda cute" then, Ribrianne calls Krillin attractive.
With this necessary correction, Toriyama attempted to make it less about "pretty & ugly" and more about "subjective beauty." And the revised panel where Helles says "That planet's an exception" just goes to show that beauty is subjective just as Whis mentioned.
(Like how in medieval times & time after that, bigger women were more attractive than slender women because being a big woman meant they had money and were more likely to survive. Then, stick skinny women were viewed as attractive in the 90's. And currently "thicc" women are viewed as attractive. Or how women with a lot of plastic surgery & injections are viewed as attractive too. Beauty standards change. And every place around the world has their own different beauty standards.)
With Toriyama's corrections, the next page where Ribrianne calls Krillin "gorgeous" now reads in a slightly different & less negative way.
Toriyama's changes imply that the Kamikazes Fireballs just find Krillin's simplistic features attractive, not that he's "ugly." Even Beerus calling Ribrianne cute implies that Krillin would also be considered "cute."
However, Krillin's reaction to being complimented by them reveals Toyotaro's original intent to insult Krillin still survived in certain places...
Krillin is visually upset when Whis teases him about how the Kamikaze Fireballs calling him handsome (the opposite would be hideous).
Krillin is visually upset when Beerus tells him "good work" [for being ugly].
There are other instances where Toriyama had to step in to correct Toyotaro's writing and art, but this one was just focused on Krillin. Maybe I will do more in the future. Maybe I won't.
CONCLUSION
Instances in Toyotaro's writing like these contradict Toriyama's works. Krillin is never called ugly in Toriyama's original work nor is he called ugly in his recent works. Toriyama treats Krillin with respect while Toyotaro treats him with disrespect. You wanna know how Toriyama writes Krillin? Read the original manga, watch the DBS anime, & watch DBS: Super Hero (Toriyama was heavily involved in the script and character designs for that film).
The DBS manga is proof of how much Toyotaro doesn't understand the characters & reveals his strong dislike for Krillin. Toyotaro's almost Koyama 2.0. (Koyama is the one who insulted Krillin and made him look bad in DBZ & DBZ movies when Toriyama never did in his manga. Koyama hated Krillin.)
The superior version of these events are in the DBS anime. The Kamikaze Fireballs' obsession with artificial love & the themes during the 18 vs Ribrianne battle were excellent! And the way Ribrianne talked about K18 cleverly reflects how K18 haters (like Toyotaro) speak about Krillin & 18.
Anyway, I just thought I'd bring this information to ppl who may not have noticed it. The fact that Toriyama had to change every bit of the dialogue on that one page is insane! This reveals how Toriyama feels about his beloved character while revealing Toyotaro's obvious disdain for Krillin (& others who aren't Saiyans, Vegeta, or Roshi).
Special thanks to @contentexplorer for sending me a link to a translation of this page. It really helped me with my translation.
But now, I'm worried about how Toyotaro will write Krillin in his adaptation of DBS: Super Hero. Will Toyotaro insult Krillin in sly ways? Will he make 18 unnecessarily cruel towards Krillin? Will he take away moments & feats of skill/power that Krillin had and give them to another character? Knowing how Toyo does things, at least one of these things will happen... đ
BONUS INFO...
Toriyama would have had to correct 4 pages at the least, & 6 pages at the most regarding Ribrianne vs 18. It was May 2018 when this chapter came out. This is during a time when when Toriyama was working on DBS: Broly (released December 14) & DBS: Super Hero (was in pre-production since 2017). He just made quick corrections and let Toyotaro do his thing. Which ended up being Toyotaro rushing through the ToP and mischaracterizing other characters.
Toyotaro said in a 2022 interview that he watched Super Hero to understand how Toriyama writes so he can improve. This reveals two things. #1 is that Toyo DOES NOT understand how to write these characters at all. #2 is that Toriyama is not writing the manga as many falsely claim. He is barely involved in the writing. Toriyama lets Toyotaro write most of that while Toriyama gets a credit for being the creator of the series.
I have too much on my mind & I'm likely overcrowding this with too much info. I'll probably end up editing this post later so it's shorter. đ

Why is everyone so angry over Toyotaro then over the thing with Goku not knowing when Gohan and Goten were born then? What if this is Toriyama's suggestion?
No, Iâm pretty sure this is strictly Toyotaroâs nonsense because of the context.
Hereâs the thing. The scene that initially started this controversy in the anime? The context there was that Vegeta was being a Tsundere and refusing to go train with Goku because he wanted to be there for his second childâs birth. But, being Vegeta, heâs not exactly open with his feelings and he refuses to just SAY why itâs important to him, coming up with an excuse that âBulma would never forgive me if I left nowâ
This seemed odd to Goku, because Bulma told him to take Vegeta along just before this, and he had to wonder why she would hold a grudge for not being around for the birth when Chichi holds no resentment to him for not being around for Gotenâs birth. So he comments, before really thinking about it or how it might sound mind, âReally? I was dead when Goten was bornâ
Now, this sounds bad yes, but itâs a case of Goku speaking before thinking and not meaning anything wrong. A lot of people took it as Goku being dismissive of Goten and the importance of childbirth and being there for your family. And while I get people getting that impression from the word choice⊠with the context mentioned, itâs pretty clear he didnât mean that at all, and he probably would have been a lot more understanding of Vegetaâs motivations from the start if the prince of all drama queens had just been honest with him.
Itâs also clear that it wasnât the intent on the writers to portray Goku in a negative light with that in regards to his parenting skills, or tear him down in favour of propping up Vegeta. You know why?
Because say what you will about their overall handling of Goku, thereâs plenty of issues especially with how they overplay their âLol, Gokuâs an idiotâ jokes, especially in the Future Trunks saga. But the Super anime frequently portrays Goku as a loving and supportive parent.
Goku spends plenty of time hanging out with Goten while heâs working and at home, and is physically affectionate towards him. Heâs happy for Gohan and the life heâs leading, and despite how Goku would be happy if Gohan were to train and become a fighter again (And he has been visibly happy and supportive of Gohan doing so this saga), he fully supports Gohanâs scholarly ambitions and realizes how important they are to him. As shown in episode 30, when Goku was quick to shrug off Gohan not being able to take part in the tournament against universe 6 because of a conference, saying âStudyingâs important tooâ.
Goku loves his granddaughter Pan and dotes on her a lot. Heâs considerate of his familyâs well being, and despite wanting to go train with King Kai to make sure he was prepared for future threats to the earth, at the start of the show he was ready to keep farming to support everyone, only leaving to train after Mr Satan gave the family plenty of money to support themselves.
He flew into a rage we havenât seen from him since Frieza killed Krillin when Goku Black revealed heâd murdered an alternate version of Chichi and Goten. And to top it off, in episode 77 itself, Goku was very happy to take Goten along with him to train with Whis, showing heâs happy to spend quality time with his son.
For all the shows ups and downs with how it writes Goku, it has never tried to paint Goku as anything else but a loving and supportive father who does care about his children and family. So itâs clear with that scene given all this context, that there was never any intention to tear Goku down or imply he doesnât consider Gotenâs birth an important thing.
Keep in mind, despite not being around for Gotenâs birth, he and Goten bonded immediately after meeting each other, and after Goku came back to life they seem to just have a perfectly normal father son relationship as though Gokuâs always been around, no resentment or anything.
Whereas Vegeta, even though he has grown a lot as a person and loves his family, was still willing to up and leave them at the drop of a hat back at the start of the RF saga to train with Whis. Goku knows that while Vegeta is a good guy and loves his family, heâs still a bit self-obsessed and wouldnât normally pass up an excuse to go training, especially if it meant risking Goku surpassing him again.
So Vegetaâs reaction was weird enough for Goku to comment on, and since Whis showed up very quickly after and Goku just wanted to get going to train, he didnât dwell on why Vegeta was being so reluctant and against leaving at the moment. He might have caught onto why it mattered so much on his own, we donât know because of how the scene played out.Â
Itâs likely that Goku might have just assumed that simply being around for your family was the most important thing. Now, you can argue that it was inconsiderate for him to not realize that being around for your childâs birth is a significant thing to a lot of people, but really they didnât KNOW the baby was going to be born that day (And by the looks of things, she might not have been if not for Whis speeding things up), thereâs not indication that Goku wanted to be gone for more than the rest of the day, and Whis could always keep an eye on things with his staff and take Vegeta back if Bulma went into labour.
And, well, the significance of the whole thing might not have immediately occurred to Goku because Bulma told him to bring Vegeta anyway, so it didnât seem like there was any urgency for Vegeta to stay.
Could this exchange have been written a lot better and differently? Absolutely, no arguments there. But as it is, I donât think itâs really that bad, or that Goku really comes off as that dismissive of either Goten, or the significance of having a child. It was just a conversation that was handled awkwardly between the two because Vegeta wasnât being open with his feelings.
The word choice is shaky, but with everything in context I never saw it in the worst possible light or framing Goku in a negative way on purpose. People say stupid things without realizing it or how they might be taken all the time in real life, I know Iâve been there, no real harm done in the long run.
The manga though? Thatâs a different case entirely, because the context of the whole manga points to a writer having a specific bias against Goku.
Looking back, the manga seems to portray Goku as dismissive of his children at best, indignant about them at worst. Almost every scene of Goku together with Goten from the anime? Not in the manga, I canât even remember the last time they shared panels together. Even the scene at the very start of Super with Goten on the tractor had Goku looking a lot more annoyed with Goten after saving him from falling off a cliff.
And Gohan? Oh boy, you know that moment I brought up where anime Goku was supportive of his son being a scholar and being understanding of Gohan having to miss out on the U6 tournament because of the conference?
Well, in the manga, when Vegeta suggests having Gohan on the teams roster, Goku calls him crazy and dismisses Gohan as having become a total bookworm, and admonishing him for focusing on studying and how he lost his Gi. And later when he asks Videl why Gohan isnât around to watch the tournament and she mentions the conference, Goku gets indignant and basically insulted Gohan for it, being offended at his own son for having a job and responsibilities to live up to and not just dropping everything to come see him beat people up.
Doesnât exactly paint Goku as a supportive or caring father, now does it? Also, that scene of Goku flying into a rage over Goku Black murdering Goten and Chichi? Didnât happen in the manga. Black just comments âoh yeah, I killed youâ and Goku makes a comment about âGuess iâm going to have to avenge⊠myselfâ and doesnât even consider what Black might have done to his family, his first real concern after finding out about his alternate selfâs murder in the anime.
On the flip side of this, Toyotaro still finds the time to fill up the last two sagas of the manga with moments of Vegeta being a good family man with Bulma and both versions of Trunks. Sure, the anime does this too, but it gives every couple good moments and every father is given some scenes doting on their children.
But itâs notable that Vegebul is the only couple that gets any real shipping moments in the manga, and Vegeta is also given comparatively more prominence in the Future Trunks saga compared to the anime, in the process sidelining Future Trunks himself a good amount might I add. This includes being the one to fight Goku Black during every encounter, with Goku not even getting a real confrontation with him.
Heck, Toyotaro outright takes a moment from the last episode of the anime where Goten goes to hug Goku after the whole ordeal with Zamasu and Chichi comes over expressing worry over Gokuâs state, and removes Goten and Chichi from the scene entirely to give that moment to Vegeta, Trunks and Bulma.
Not to mention the scene where a severely exhausted Vegeta to the point he should barely be able to survive any more attacks at this point, randomly powers up after getting angry and destroys TWO merged Zamasu clones instantly, when Goku after achieving âPerfectedâ Super saiyan blue, a much more powerful upgrade to SSB, could only fight evenly with one Merged Zamasu for a while in an effort to burn through his potara time limit.
And then much of the first chapter of the universe survival saga in the manga is focused on Vegeta sparring with Whis and then Beerus, and outright retcons the super saiyan god prophecy to include Vegeta as Beerusâ destined rival alongside Goku.
If you think this all makes Toyotaro seem a little bit biased towards Vegeta and that he probably doesnât have much respect for Gokuâs parenting skills. Well then, youâre probably right.
And then we get to the big issue. You know that scene I just talked about in detail from the anime.
Well, here Goku states that he doesnât know when either Goten OR Gohan was born, and Vegeta outright says âYou may not be a bad guy, but as a father youâre the worstâ.
The framing of this moment is the exact opposite of the anime. Now first off, yes, Goku wasnât around for Gotenâs birth because he was dead. Thatâs a neutral fact. But GOHAN? Goku lived with Chichi the entire five years between Dragon Ball and the start of DBZ. He raised Gohan with her that whole time. Those are canon facts. The idea of him not knowing when Gohan was born is utter nonsense.
I mean, even if we were to accept that for some inexplicable reason he had to go away for a bit while Chichi was heavily pregnant (Which is never implied), and wasnât around the day when Gohan was actually born⊠he should know when Gohanâs birthday is. Even if somehow we can believe he wasnât around for the birth immediate after it happened, Goku SHOULD know when it did. The only explanation that he doesnât in this case, is he just doesnât care to remember it and itâs not that big a deal.
Especially problematic though is Vegeta outright calling Goku the worst father ever (Yeah, real funny mr never hugged his son until he was 8, punches him in the face for doing the thing you told him to do, didnât care if he and his mother died at one point). That line makes it clear that the intent of this exchange is that Goku is supposed to be portrayed as a bad father here in this continuity, and as a contrast to make Vegeta look like the better, more considerate parent by comparison.
That is literally the worst way you can do anything like this.
The anime exchange was awkwardly worded, but ultimately harmless and it wasnât meant in the way some people concluded because⊠well, some people who donât like DBSâ handling of Goku take any excuse they can to complain about it and immediately jump to the worst possible conclusions with things like this.
But the manga scene? With the way this is handled, and taking into considering how Toyotaro usually handles Goku, especially in regards to how he perceives his children in contrast to the anime, and his fixation and glorification of Vegeta at several points, itâs visibly clear through the writing that Toyotaro (NOT Toriyama, because Toriyama writes Goku as a loving and supportive family man all the time) has about as much understanding of Gokuâs parenting skills as your average TFS fanboy.
And it only gets worse. In the most recent chapter (Where Toyotaro also had Vegeta be the one to refuse to let Goten and Trunks compete in the ToP because âTheyâre just kidsâ and had him be a lot more immediately happy and excited around everyone else about Bullaâs birth), Toyotaro brought up that Goku in the manga has never seen a baby be born AND doesnât even know HOW theyâre born, wondering if Whis magically popping Bulla out of Bulmaâs tummy was the standard birthing procedure.
âŠ
âŠ
âŠ
Yeah, bull####!
I mean, I could believe that Goku didnât actually witness the birth itself. I know some fatherâs sit in a waiting room while itâs happening, for example. But I CANNOT believe that Goku wasnât told by Chichi, or anyone else at any point, how babyâs are actually born. You could get away with a comment like that with kid Goku, or even Goku at the end of Dragon Ball. But as a middle aged adult?!
No, there is literally no way that makes sense for his character to not know that sort of thing. The way that scene was handled infantilizes Goku and makes him a huge manchild. And it was Toyotaro that chose to portray him that way, because Goku makes no similar comment in the anime.
The way all of this is framed it DOES make it clear that Goku is pretty indifferent to the birth of his own children and the significance of it. It makes it clear Goku doesnât know a thing about childbirth, or seemingly any significance in having a child.
The anime moment from episode 77 could have been written better, but this was outright written to frame Goku as a dismissive, bad father who doesnât have much respect for his children, but Vegeta does because heâs super dad.
And before any Vegeta or Vegebul fan says anything, NO, Iâm not trying to attack Toyotaro for âGiving them a momentâ or whatever they want to say to play the victim card. I love Vegeta, and I was happy to see him put so much importance on the birth of his new baby in the anime. Iâm happy for how much heâs grown.
But the way things were handled in the manga was insulting to Gokuâs character, and you should NEVER tear down one character to build up another. Thatâs bad and stupid writing. It would be just as bad if either version made Vegeta regress severely or look worse than he should be as a parent at this point to make Goku look better by comparison.
Iâm sure youâre wondering anon âWell, Toriyama signs off on everything, he must approve of thisâ. Toriyama makes corrections where he feels theyâre needed yes, but he can make mistakes or just not think too hard about something. Heâs only human. We donât know how he actually feels about what Toyotaro did, and given his own writing of Goku and how the anime handles Goku as a parent, itâs clear that whatever the case, the mangaâs attitude to Gokuâs parenting skills isnât on him. Itâs on Toyotaro specifically.
Look, I have my issues with how Goku is written in the DBS anime too, I wonât argue too hard with people who find it annoying. But I stand by that the anime scene didnât make Goku look as bad as people make it out to be, but the manga?
This isnât even all of the problems with DBS manga Goku, but it is very much more insulting to me personally than just about anything the animeâs done. I can overlook moments of making him look overly stupid after some time to grumble about it, but what Toyotaro did here was so far out of character, so damaging and the complete antithesis of everything canon Gokuâs character should be about, that it just makes me sick.Â
This mess IS on Toyotaro, and regardless of what the man wants to say about Goku being his favourite character, itâs clear through his actual writing where his real priorities lie, and that he fundamentally doesnât understand who Goku is as a person.

Should Vegeta phase out and should Goku have a new rival and challenges to conquer?
I don't think at this point Vegeta could be satisfyingly phased out. He could sit out an arc like he almost did when TOP began, but phase out ? No. Goku has always needed others to buy him time and space and context for his battles, and Vegeta is the only one that could match him in that. It would be like Buu again where Goku hypothetically could start and finish his own fight, but after everyone else had their try and screw up, you needed Vegeta to finish the arc. Now even without Majin Vegeta to kickstart thing, we've reached the point where Goku's both backstory and and main story is interconnected with his. You kinda cant write Goku well without him anymore, as his without Goku. For the entirety of Super lore since 2013 (except the manga because i have many things to say about Toyoraro's Vegeta and one of that is he is NOT the Vegeta i know), Vegeta is the sole provider of context for Goku's story. Beerus and Whis? they wouldnt come if they had no relations with Vegeta and Saiyans in the past, and wouldnt stay if not for Vegeta's wife's help. Frieza? He's Vegeta's old enemy. Future Trunks? Vegeta's son and family. Broly? He attacked Vegeta first because bad blood now. If not you get Z Broly's nonsense. Also Super Saiyan God and all its variation, in a way, is Vegeta's form., the way SSJ was Goku's.Â
Goku "makes things happen" and is fun when he comes on screen, but he lacks the intent Vegeta has. Ultimately, Goku is a passive hero. He fights by the seats of his pants just like how Toriyama writes. He needs a reason and context lest he become a dumbass full blown villain. As a friend and partner who provides WHY and HOW Goku fights, Vegeta is pretty much the new Grandpa Gohan of DB and Kid Gohan of DBZ - The entirely of Dragon Ball's adventures happens because Goku wants to find his dragon ball, as well as saving his son in DBZ. As a rival, say you could hypothetically make someone like Hit Goku's new Vegeta, but you kinda cant write this much bulk of history and backstory and PERSONALITY to make them engaging.

Not a fan of super? Any particular reason why?
It's not written by Toriyama, it's written by DBZ fanboys like Toyoraro. It started out just being a worse version of the movies and has continued to just trash canon. Toriyama should have let the series retire and probably doesn't remember a lot of canon anyway but the fanboys make crap worse because they pump the series full of lifeless crap they think is 'cool' aka just going COMPLETELY insane with power cycles to a degree Toriyama didn't even hit, and they can't even keep simple shit like Saiyans not being inherently able to fly (fucking Goten???) as babies. Also Toyotaro only learned to draw from copying other artists so the man is literally fucking unable to draw shit without tracing, and there's a million examples of him tracing old Toriyama-drawn manga panels.
