Toxic Employees
Photo by Nadine Shaabana Toxic employees can be as bad if not worse than a bad manager or even inept leadership. Toxic employees are typically overconfident and selfish and generally understand how to walk the fine line between right and wrong to ensure they do not fall foul of company policy. They generally do not cooperate with others or respect their peers because they’re always looking out…

5 Types of Toxic Employees | Toxic Employee 1: The Hot Mess
Why do you have a hot mess working for you anyways? Unless they have a talent that no one else can do, The Hot Mess should not work in the apartment industry.

What is Workplace Violence? By Clara Wajngurt Lately I've been writing about workplace violence and the fact it includes workplace bullying. So here I'd like to present the different definitions of workplace violence in the literature. The one I have seen the most emphasized is that it refers to behaviors which damage psychologically and physically one or more employees on purpose (premeditated) in the workplace (Lewis, 2005). I have also seen the following as definitions of workplace violence: 1. Attacks and threats against a victim by someone in the workplace (Cooper & Swanson, 2004) 2. Any activity that causes hostility and has physical and psychological adverse effects on the employees in an organization(Cooper& Swanson, 2004) 3. Al kinds of physical attacks, threatening behavior or abusive words in the workplace (Niosh, 2002) Just from these definitions we can see how workplace bullying is part of workplace violence--and this must be stopped. Leaders must have the courage to see beyond the numbers and make a decision or the good of the entire team. Even your No. 1 employee is expendable if he or she is toxic to the overall culture. via @GeneHammett on @Inc Magazine Article

What Happens When Nurses Are Bullied? November 11, 2018 Clara Wajngurt, Ph.D What Happens When Nurses Are Bullied There are many examples of nurses being bullied. Some of these bullying behaviors consist of personal attack, like criticism, isolation, intimidation, degradation, belittling, rolling eyes in disgust, hand gestures that steer the conversation or even physical abuse. and erosion of professional competence and reputation .As a result of this, the targeted nurse loses self-confidence which then escalates to cause stress, physical illness and mental distress like anxiety. Negative behaviors that make the job of  the targeted nurse difficult include-having an unmanageable workload which includes many patients, receiving punitive actions from supervisor like posting medical errors on a public blackboard for all to see and  a supervisor who writes critical evaluations for the nurse. So the impact of bullying on nurses' productivity and impairment of their physical and psychological conditions persist. Power imbalance occurs in the hospital because there are many hierarchical groups-between managers, supervisors and subordinates as well as physicians, nurses, social workers and licensed practical nurses, health aides, etc.Barry, Gillespie, Gordon and Gates have found that 21.3% of newly graduated novice nurses were exposed to workplace bullying in their prior six months on the job, and subsequently their work productivity significantly was reduced. We need organizational support and commitment to protect nurses' health and welfare from the damaging effects or workplace bullying. 5 Types of Toxic Employees | Toxic Employee 4: The Socialite Now come on, what’s so bad about The Socialite? Don’t you want someone fun to work with? Well if you like someone that fans the office drama, and lights a spark to latest and wrong office gossip, then you will love The Socialite. Even though you want to come to work like its fun like a party, you don’t want to party every day.

5 Types of Toxic Employees | Toxic Employee 3: The Martyr The Martyr could help you step your game up somewhat if you know what positives to take away from them. The negatives: condescending and forever the perfect one. You can handle this employee somewhat better than the prior two. On the other hand if you are undermining your team members.....Either straighten it up or you gotta go!

5 Types of Toxic Employees | Toxic Employee 2: The Slacker
I read the slacker and I have to disagree with some of it. All slackers don't have bad timekeeping and absenteeism. They get to work on time everyday and are hardly absent from work. However, low motivation and half done work is a trait. It’s just a job and not a career to them. No slackers in the apartment industry! You gotta go!

In the March 15, 2019 edition of the Chronicle of Higher Education, is an article titled, 'A Year After Charges of Sexual Harassment, What Has Harvard Done.' It describes that a prominent Harvard professor and former vice provost was accused of sexually harassing 18 women over several decades. The university promised a complete investigation. The current provost wrote in a campus-wide email, that Harvard 'will promptly and fairly pursue any claim of sexual harassment or assault brought forward to the full extent of its policies.' The dean assured the community that 'there would be a full and fair process of review.' According to this article the process has not reached a conclusion. It is important that these investigations be followed through and resolved-so that we have faith in the system, justice is served and the targets can move forward. An article by Leah Hollis, a noted national and international expert on workplace bullying, recently wrote an article on The Abetting Bully: Vicarious Bullying and Unethical Leadership in Higher Education.Vicarious bullying 'occurs when the organization fails to curtail managerial abuse.' In order to have ethical leadership-we must have empathy and genuine care of our colleagues. If this existed, there would occur fewer 'primary bullies, secondary abetting and vicarious bullying.' An ethical leader would develop 'conscientious' policies and promote a healthy workplace environment. However when 'executive leadership is unethical, narcissistic and self-aggrandizing,' we have the promotion of a toxic workplace. The toxic workplace does not only arise form one primary bully and one target-but arises from a series of 'callouus and deleterious' behaviors, that help promote a primary bully. We need to stop these toxic workplaces and promote more ethical leadership. #WorkplaceBullying #bullyingprevention #bullying #coaching #stopbullying #workplacebullying #toxic #toxicbehavior #bullyingeduc #cyberbullying #stopbullyingnow #antibullying #clarawajngurt #toxicemployee #college #academia #coporatebullying #altoalbullying #stopthehate #preventionconsulting #bullyingconsulting

Recently the Chronicle of Higher Education (January 18, 2019) described an article regarding the settlement of Chicago State University's lawsuit over a faculty blog.It was a four-year legal battle between Chicago State University's administration and two professors. The faculty members felt they had First Amendment Rights to publish a blog criticizing administrators.Essentially the professors accused the administration of seeking to restrict faculty members' speech on the independent Chicago State University Faculty Voice Blog. The blog was started in 2009 and was generally critical of university leadership and accountability. The university administration requested that the managers of the blog, disable the blog immediately. Also at stake was the fact that the administration insisted that 'decorum policies for faculty members' were violated on the site. Certainly this reminds us of workplace bullying when our supervisors want to suppress discussion/critique amongst the team about a certain project - want to penalize those who speak up---and then insist on ostracizing those who spoke. The lawsuit was settled in favor of the faculty for $650,000. Don't you think the university could have saved itself that large sum of money-- had there been a working university anti-bullying policy?
