The World Trade Centre Abuja is mainly for luxury and sophistication. The development of World Trade Centre Abuja started in 2010, on a land size of over 6,000 hectares in the Central Business District of Abuja. The complex is being funded by private financial institutions, as well as private investors, costing about ₦200 billion. Jammal Said, the husband who spearheaded the project, in a bid to fulfil his wife’s love of travel, came up with the idea of building a plane house of about 100 ft (30.5 m) long.

According to Culture Trip, "The house itself has three floors and a basement. The wings and engines of the plane that extend over the sides of the hilltop villa each contain a bedroom and bathroom. The beautifully constructed cabin area is a living room and bar, the TV/computer game room is located in the plane’s cockpit, while the back of the plane is a kitchen. Along with the main building, the property also features a number of other aircraft-inspired structures, one resembling an aircraft control tower. Behind the main house is a smaller, plane-topped guest cottage and a two-storey security booth." NATIONAL MOSQUE The history of the National Mosque began in 1980s, when the Federal Government of Nigeria during the regime of late Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari decided to move from Lagos to the new Federal Capital Teritory, Abuja. In 1981, some prominent Muslims from all over the country suggested that the Muslim community should solicit for and collect contributions from both domestic and foreign sources to erect a mosque edifice as a place of worship which would be the national mosque that will serve as a national institution and a symbol of unity for the Nigerian Muslim Ummah. The idea was widely accepted and supported by the Nigerian Muslims.

The mosque was built in 1984 and is open to the non-Muslim public, except during congregational prayers. It includes a library and a conference room. The complex includes a conference centre capable of serving five hundred persons, the office for the Islamic Centre, and residential facilities for the imam and muezzin. It has a beautiful area of relaxation, meditation, interesting architecture, and a nice little market in the outer courtyard that visitors can take advantage of.

The architectural design of the Mosque Complex was done by AIM Consultants Limited. The Design was made in such a way that the mosque has an imposing view that can be seen from various parts of the City Center and environs. The Mosque is located on the north-west terminus of the Cultural Mall Area. NATIONAL CHRISTIAN CENTRE The National Christian Centre (previously known as the National Ecumenical Centre and sometimes known as the National Church of Nigeria) is the primary Christian place of worship in Nigeria. It is located in Abuja, the capital city. The centre is an inter-denominational church building. Built in a neo-gothic style, with several pivoted arches and wide nave leading to the altar, this 8,000 capacity edifice is an epitome of architectural excellence. The altar, placed at the centre of the church completes a full rotation every ten minutes.

A pipe organ is fitted to the right wing of the church, close to which sits the choir. Stained glass windows which employ a simple but attractive mix of yellow, green and red colours can be seen all around the church. The centre displays remarkable work of architecture and excellent work of craftsmanship.

When not being used for Christian ceremonies, it is open to the public. The project was started around 1989, then lay dormant for several years until 2004, when the Christian Association of Nigeria organized a committee to ensure its speedy completion. Lai Mohammed unveils agenda for culture, tourism sector

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Sunday unveiled his agenda to transform the creative, tourism and culture industry into Nigeria’s new oil in the next four years. The minister who disclosed the plans in Lagos at a meeting with Travel Journalists, Arts and Culture Writers Association of Nigeria said the sector would also create millions of jobs for the youth. Mohammed who corrected the misconception in certain circle that he paid more attention to information sector during the previous administration said he would consolidate on the numerous achievemenrs recorded and do more for the culture and tourism sector. “There is a misconception in certain circles that we paid more attention to the Information sector than we did to Culture and Tourism. “This may appear so because the issues we usually deal with in the Information sector are those that receive the bigger play in the media. “But I can tell you, with evidence, that we achieved a lot in the Tourism and Culture Sector, or in the Creative Industry generally,” he said. Highlighting the programmes to build on the gains of the past four years, the minister said he would set the necessary legal framework, conclude inauguration of the National Policy on Culture and National Policy on Tourism. Specifically, he said the ministry would finalise work on the Motion Picture Council of Nigeria (MOPICON) Bill and submit it to the Federal Executive Council (FEC). “The plan is to create a proper regulatory environment for the sub-sector that has put Nigeria’s name on the global map, thus attracting the much-needed investment to the sector,” he said. Mohammed said he would establish the Endowment Fund for The Arts to create a legal framework for the financing of the sector and kick-start the implementation of the parts of the Tourism Masterplan that constitute low-hanging fruits. He said he would make the National Summit for Culture and Tourism a yearly affair, starting from the first quarter of 2020 and ensure a regular meeting of the Presidential Council on Tourism (PCT) to catalyse the growth of tourism. Mohammed said that the ministry would complete work on the establishment of Tourism Statistics and Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), working with the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO). He said the ministry would institute a unified National Celebration of the World Tourism Day, instead of the current situation of multiple celebrations. The minister promised to organise a Regional Summit on Culture and Tourism, beginning from 2o2o, with a view to working with other countries in the West Africa sub-region to foster development of the sector. “We will continue with our visits to tourist sites and attend as many festivals as possible across the country. “‘We will also finalise work on and inaugurate  the National Festival Calendar this year to attract more tourists, domestic and foreign, to these event,” he said.. Mohammed promised to get more sites in Nigeria inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites and explore private sector branding of the nation’s Cultural Centres abroad. In achieving the set goals, the minister solicited the support of stakeholders, stressing that he could do nothing without their cooperation. Earlier, the minister reviewed what the administration did in the past four years which included the hosting of the National Summit on Culture and Tourism and the Creative Industry Financing Conference. He said both events paid off leading to resuscitation of the Presidential Council on Tourism (PCT), the setting up of a Task Force on the Creative Industry and private-sector-led growth and development of the Industry, among others. He said the units carried out many joint raids and seizure of pirated works, with the National Film and Video Censors Board, . “‘Another fallout of the meetings is the Creative Industry Financing Initiative (CIFI) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to improve access to long-term, low-cost financing for entrepreneurs and investors in the Creative Industry and the Information Technology Sectors. “Under this Initiative, you can get a loan ranging from three million Naira to N500 million for movie production, movie distribution, fashion, music, etc. “Remember, gentlemen that this happened after I also led a team of stakeholders to meet with the CBN, upon the recommendation of the Creative Industry Financing Conference. “Same applies to the granting of the Pioneer Status by the Federal Government to the Creative Industry Sector to boost investment in the sector. It was one of the recommendations from the Creative Industry Financing Conference. He said the ministry engaged in partnerships with Tony Elumelu Foundation and the British Council to fast-track the growth of the industry “Under the latter, we trained over 100 Festival Managers in Lagos, Abuja and Accra. Mohammed said that the ministry re-engaged fully with the UNWTO and the efforts paid off as Nigeria was awarded the hosting right of the 61st UNWTO CAF Meeting and elected as Vice President, Africa, at the 22nd General Assembly of the organisation in China. Rotimi Abiodun Afelumo, is originally from Igbara-odo Ekiti, in Ekiti state. He is a holder of a Bsc in Physics from Ado Bayero University. He’s been married to his lovely wife Rachel for 5 years and they have two lovely children – Theo, 3 year old and Chloe, 4 months. They currently live in the Iskandar Puteri district of Johor Bharu, Malaysia. He moved from Nigeria to Malaysia in January 2017 when an opportunity came knocking at his door as Technology Intergrationist and head of IT in Raffles American School.

WORK IN MALAYSIA

What’s it like in the day of a technology Integrationist in Raffles?

My daily routine includes providing direction for the IT team to support all staff and student technology needs, oversea the day to day running of the IT office. I oversee and administer the Student Information system, Learning management System and all other online learning platforms that is used by the school. My team and I also manages the entire school network, computers, printers, IPads and Chromebook. As a technology driven school, all students and staff have access to one device or the other and It is the responsibility of the IT office to setup, install apps and support all of these device when necessary.

As a technology Integrationist, I work with teachers to help them integrate technology in their various classes, provide training to staff, curate relevant applications to be used for teaching and provide training when necessary. I teach Robotics during camps and also as extracurricular activity. I also co-teach the high school technology class and the middle school coding class.

Why did you move to Malaysia and how were you able to find a job with this American school considering how hard it is for Africans in Malaysia to find work?

I moved to Malaysia in January 2017 and my family joined my in March. I moved here because the offer was better than what I had in Nigeria, in terms of the opportunity, exposure and off course benefits. Back home I worked with the American International School of Abuja first as a Network Manager, then as Assistant IT Director and finally as the Administrative Technology Coordinator. But here, I get to venture into new terrains that I had always wanted to try out.

I can’t really say that I did anything to “find a job” in Malaysia, but that the “job found me”, as I didn’t go online or any job platform to look for and apply for this position. Looking back I can clearly say God did it for me. When the Job offer came, I wasn’t planning on leaving or working outside the country.

So how did you get the job?

Around May – June 2016, My my IT Director (then I was Assistant IT Director) asked for my resume and said someone that he won’t mention likes what I do and is trying to replicate the same thing in his school. He collected my resume and asked for my permission to edit and to submit it. October 2016, I got an email from a former principal who left my former office and is now in Malaysia as the Head of School at Raffles American School asking if I don’t mind coming to work for him. They processed all the documents and paid me and my family’s relocation to Malaysia.

Is Raffles American School only for Americans or expats?

No, off course not. Raffles American School is open to everyone who can afford it. It is a member of Raffles Education Corporation which operates 24 colleges/universities in 22 cities across 13 countries in Asia-Pacific and Europe: Australia, Cambodia, The people’s Republic off China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland and Thailand.

How does the working atmosphere in Malaysia differ from Nigeria?

The major difference I see is the fact systems work here more than it does in Nigeria. It may be different for me as most of my colleagues are expats from other countries and my organisation is privately owned. I do have a better working terms and conditions here because I am a foreign hire(expatriate). Though working in an American school back home, I was considered as a local hire and hence cannot enjoy the benefits of an expat like I am here.

LIFE IN MALAYSIA

What are the successes you have registered since moving here?

My wife and I have been able to start our masters almost at the same time. That is a big success as it was almost impossible to do back home. We also conceived and had our second child here. These two are the most outstanding successes apart from promotions and other career opportunities here and there.

What is your favorite part of living and working in Malaysia?

Johor Bahru is especially quiet and serene, easy to find your way around. I love Johor also because of its proximity to Singapore. The fact that systems and infrastructures work to a great extent is one of my most favorite part of living and working here.

Did you move here immediately with your family and how did they manage settling in after relocation?

My family joined me less than two months after I arrived. That made settling in more easier for me as I didn’t have to continuously worry about their welfare. Also, the weather here is not so different from the weather in the northern part of Nigeria where we lived as a family. All of these factors made settling in easier for my family and I.

In your opinion what are the things to lookout for by Africans while in Johor?

In terms of tourist attraction, Johor isn’t really big in tourism except for some beach sites, shopping malls and hiking locations.

Do you think Malaysia is a family friendly country and accommodating to foreigners?

Every country has its laws, cultures and traditions and so long as you do not go against these, you will be accommodated. I can say Malaysia is relatively friendly and accommodating. Language can be a barrier sometimes but that is common everywhere.

What are some of the challenges African expats in Malaysia face and can you suggest any solutions?

The biggest challenge is see is the perception that is prevalent among the locals about Africans. There is this stereotype about Africans and especially Nigerians. Justifiably so, some Africans/Nigerian have acted and are still acting in ways that continues to encourage such stereotypes. The only solution to this is to be a good ambassador of your country, live right, be here legally and carry out your endeavors -whether work or studies- in the right manners while avoiding any kind of trouble.

What is your best advice you can give to any expat considering moving to Malaysia?

Ensure that you are here legally and that your papers are complete. There is nothing good as having peace of mind in a foreign country.

Be good and exceptional in whatever you do. That is what will guarantee your continuous relevance.

Recognize that you are a foreigner and behave yourself.

Stay focused on the reason you are here.

I know as an Expat, you go where work calls or sends you. However, do you see yourself here in the distant future?

Yes, I do. Malaysia; Johor especially, is peaceful and serene. The weather here isn’t so much different from the weather in Nigeria. I can see myself staying at least 5 years here before looking at opportunities elsewhere. My family is well settled and there hasn’t been any issues since our arrival.

Île de Gorée (Goree Island) Named by the Dutch (Goede Reede meaning Good Harbor) in the 1600s, Goree Island was used to warehouse slaves to be transported to America.  Today however, it’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, protected as a place of world culture and heritage, and is a famous destination for people interested in the history of Atlantic slave trade, attracting tourists from all over the globe. 

The best way to get to Goree is on a ferry at Port Antonome de Dakar, and it cost 2700CFA for a return ticket. The boat ride takes approximately 15 minutes. My recommendations, get a seat at the top of the ferry. There you’ll get the best view of the dock, ships, ocean and horizon, and be able to take gallery-worthy pictures and selfies. Just be sure to secure your wig with a lot of bobby pins because the wind damn near snatched mine off. You don’t want a situation.

Far from its slave-trading days, the atmosphere on Gorée is serene. There are many small restaurants offering rice, fish, chicken and chips and about 2000CFA should fetch you a decent meal. There are 5 hotels on the island if you decide to spend the night.

For souvenirs, there are a lot of local art-work for sale, ranging from sand and oil paintings to wood and metal work. There are also women and children hawking local jewellery. However, they are always overpriced because tourists have money, dollars to precise and they want as much of it as they can get. If you want value for your money, be prepared to haggle.

My recommendation, and same goes for Dakar City Center, is to divide the asking price by 3 and stick with it. Walk away if the seller refuses your offer. 90% of the time, they will run after you to strike a better bargain. Stick to you initial price unless the seller walks away, then it’s time to take his last offer. Example, asking price for men’s slippers is 7000CFA, sometimes 10,000CFA. Divide that by 3, that’s about 2500-3000CFA and that’s how much it costs. Asking price for Senegalese men’s wear is 15,000-20,000CFA. Make an offer of 7000-8000CFA. Better still make offers in bulk, say 23,000CFA for 3.

Maison des Esclaves (House of Slaves) Gorée is a famous destination for people interested in the history of slave trade, and for the location of the House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves), built between 1780–1784.

The House of Slaves is one of the oldest houses on the island, now serving as a tourist destination and a memorial to the slave trade, which lasted for 312 years. In 1992, the Pope visited Goree the House of Slaves and apologised for the role Catholic missionaries played in the slave trade. In June 2013, Barack Obama, then President of the United States also visited the House of Slaves.

Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine (The African Renaissance Monument) Le Monument de la Renaissance Africaine is a gigantic bronze statue, standing 49 meters tall and set at the top of one of Collines des Mamelles hill outside Dakar. It was designed by Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby and was built between 2006 and 2010 by a Korean company.

The monument consists of a full-length African man with his right hand around the waist of an african woman, while holding a sitting child to his left shoulder. The woman is holding onto him with her right hand while her left hand is stretched out back while the child is pointing forward.

The woman in the statue is said to represent the remembrance of the slave trade as her extended hand points to ile de Goree. The man represents freedom and the child hope as he/she points into the future.

Inside the monument building, which is below the massive figures, is an African Arts Gallery, hosting pieces of art from various countries in Africa on each of its eight floors. Also common are images of prominent African leaders and pioneers.

My recommendation, wear flat super comfortable shoes because you will need all the help you can muster getting up that flight of stairs. Sunglasses, a bottle of water and a camera are a must have.

Lac Rose (The Pink Lake) Named after the colour of its water, Lake Retba or Lac Rose is located in northern part of the Cap Vert peninsula of Senegal, about 30kms from Dakar in northwest Africa.

The pink color is said to be “particularly visible during the dry season (from November to June) and is less so during the rainy season (July to October)”.  Now, this is where it gets tricky. After successfully negotiating a cab for 30,000CFA (down from 70,000CFA) in French for the first time, I arrived at the Pink Lake about an hour later to find that the lake was not even pink and it was “dry season”! Words can’t express my level of disappointment.

Apparently, the day wasn’t clear and sunny enough. My recommendation, don’t bother with this place. There isn’t much to see here unless you want to buy some salt. If you insist, for a ride on the water they will tell you 14,000 CFA. If you refuse, they will ask you how much you want to pay. I and my friends ended up paying 1000CFA per person. The local bracelets and key holders are 300CFA each but the asking price is 1000CFA each.

Sadly, this is be my last post on Dakar Senegal. I’ll be leaving tomorrow and since the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Abuja is closed, I am dreading the trip  home. I’ll have to go to Murtala Mohamed Airport, Lagos and then to Kaduna Airport before heading back to Abuja. Nevertheless, this trip has been worthwhile. Oh, I have to tell you that my French has improved significantly and I’m looking forward to my next adventure. Paris perhaps? A bientôt!
