#Tourism news from Solomon Islands

While most of the stuff I post in this blog is going to be Australia oriented given that's what I'm most knowledgeable on (and have the most resources for), I also want to occasionally branch out to talk about wildlife from surrounding landmasses every so often - wider Oceania, Wallacea, and generally anything east of the Wallace Line (where the animals become funni). Today, I wanted to start off by briefly introducing one set of islands I find to be particularly overlooked, the Solomon Archipelago, better known as the Solomon Islands.
Isolated ever since they first rose above the waves 40 million years ago, the Solomon Islands has been dubbed the ""the Galapagos of the Western Pacific" by renowned mammalogist Tim Flannery for the sheer uniqueness of its fauna. Sitting to the east of New Guinea, the archipelago consists of seven main islands and thousands of smaller islands that vary greatly in size, from impressive volcanic islands like Kolombangara to countless tiny coral cays. Naturally, the islands are clothed almost entirely in tropical rainforests, from lush lowland jungles to misty cloud forests over 2,000 metres above sea level, with some areas of seasonal dry forest and grassland on the on the northern slopes of Guadalcanal being the main exception.
Despite its close proximity to New Guinea (and therefore continental Australia), the Solomon Islands possess no native marsupials - instead it is a world of giant skinks, coconut-eating bats and mysterious rodents.
Easily the most famous animal from the Solomon Islands is the prehensile-tailed skink (Corucia zebrata), also known as the monkey-tailed skink or simply as the Solomon Islands skink. These are the largest of all living skinks, measuring up to 81 centimetres in length, and they are adapted to an arboreal way of life, feeding on leaves, fruit, flowers and fresh shoots. Like many skinks in the subfamily Egerniinae, the prehensile-tailed skink also has a pretty highly developed social life, more like that of a mammal than a typical reptile. They live a social group known as a circulus, in which different individuals band together to protect each other's offspring, and some pairs have even been known to practice long-term monogamy (practically "mating for life").
After big skink, the fauna of the Solomon Islands instantly drops into the territory of "obscure creature even most animal nerds don't know about", but they are no less remarkable or unique. Take the monkey-faced bats (Pteroplex) for example. As their name suggests, this endemic genus is notable for their highly unusual thick head shape, which gives them a vaguely monkey-like appearance. The resemblance to primates is no coincidence, for the lack of competing mammals on the islands aside from a few rats has led them to take up a lifestyle unlike that of any other bat. Their canine teeth are enormous, and what's more, possess a double cusp - something completely unique among mammals. Their boxy, powerful jaws and complex teeth are designed for tackling particularly tough fruits and nuts, and they are well known for their ability to crack into green coconuts. There are five species of monkey-faced bat scattered across the Solomon Islands, with the largest being the greater monkey-faced bat (P. flanneryi), which can have a wingspan of over 1.5 metres and weighs in at about 800 grams.

(also kinda irrelevant here but I really gotta talk about the Fijian monkey-faced bat sometime. what a knee slapper)
However, bats aren't the only coconut crackers on the Solomon Islands, for they are also home to several genera of rats that reach pretty gargantuan sizes. The largest species is Poncelet's giant rat (Solomys ponceleti), which reaches over a kilogram in weight and has quite an unusual appearance, with long but sparse dark brown hair, pinkish-white skin and a crest or mane down the back - unfortunately I cannot find any photographs or even illustrations of this species online. The impressively named emperor rat (Uromys imperator) was almost as large, but it is only known from 3 specimens collected in the 1880s and is now considered to likely be extinct. In a demonstration of how much of the Solomons remain under-surveyed however, a new species of giant Uromys, the vika or Vangunu giant rat (U. vika) was discovered by westerners only in 2015, although it had been known to the locals for far longer. This orange-haired coconut-chewer is unfortunately only known from a single specimen for now, but it weighed in at 0.5-1 kg and now represents the largest known member of its genus on the islands.
The only photograph of a living vika (Image credit: O. Revon)
Also just to keep with the pattern of everything being giant (and therefore cool), this huge frog, the giant webbed frog (Cornufer guppyi), also calls the Solomons home. I don't know much about them but they seem like cool guys.
Remember this is only meant to be a brief overview! Would love to talk more about the Solomons sometime, as well as more in-depth about the species featured here.

Tunisia has largely moved on from the May 9 killing of five people at the El Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba by a National Guardsman. The event’s prominence on the country’s news sites has diminished and its claim on Tunisian conversation has largely been ceded to the other items competing for space at the national table.
On-air criticism of police recruitment methods by radio hosts Haythem El Mekki and Elyes Gharbi swiftly resulted in a legal complaint from the security services and, essentially, an end to discussion.
Thus far, Tunisia has steadfastly refused to publicly address the anti-Semitic nature of the attack, preferring instead to characterize it as “criminal.” However, the fact that the Jewish tourists and locals gathering to celebrate the festival of Lag B’Omer were specifically targeted by the attacker, 30-year-old National Guardsman Wissam Khazri, is hard to dispute.
After killing his colleague, Khazri donned body armor and rode 12 miles by quad bike to attack the pilgrims at the synagogue. However, beyond the arrest of four conspirators, his motivation for doing so, or details of any radicalization, remains unknown.
Responding to the murders, Germany and France characterized the attack as anti-Semitic, with Paris going even further and launching a terrorism probe into the killing of one of its citizens—a dual-national who was among the victims.
For Tunisian President Kais Saied’s government, the story was simply too messy. This year’s tourism revenues, which are vital following the uncertainty surrounding the hard-pressed country’s latest bailout from the International Monetary Fund, represent one of the few economic bright spots on a dark financial horizon. That security around the synagogue appeared to have failed—the attack was undertaken by one of the island’s supposed defenders—despite the massive expense and planning involved was also pushed to the sidelines.
However, underpinning all of this was the identity of the targeted victims and the deliberate and premeditated assault upon the Jewish community.
The Jewish presence in Tunisia reaches back almost 2,000 years. Over the centuries, through occupation by Phoenicians and Romans, conquest by Arabs, and colonization by Ottomans and the French, Tunisia’s Jews have maintained an unbroken thread linking past and present Tunisia. However, since World War II and the establishment of Israel in 1948, their numbers have dwindled. Pressure at home and opportunities overseas have reduced the population from around 100,000 in 1948 to less than 1,800 today.
Of all the Jewish communities that once dotted northern Tunisia, only that on the island of Djerba remains. The synagogue there, whose foundations are said to date back to Jerusalem’s Temple of Solomon, remains a cornerstone of not simply Tunisian Jewish identity, but Jewish identity as a whole.
The reasons for this declining population are rooted in recent history. Tunisia’s steadfast support of the Palestinian cause, a matter of profound faith for many, has embedded itself across all levels of society. From 1982 to 1985, Tunisia hosted the headquarters of the Palestinian Liberation Organization in a suburb just south of the capital, Tunis, until an Israeli air campaign essentially wiped it from the map, inspiring one of the first isolated assaults on the synagogue on Djerba by way of reprisal.
Many Tunisians are acutely aware of every injustice visited upon the Palestinian population. That, along with years of unflinching official opposition to the Israeli state, has almost certainly combined to make life in the country uncomfortable for many Tunisian Jews. By way of evidence, we only need to look to the spikes in emigration to both France and Israel that followed the Six-Day War in 1967 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
Whatever some may say, it is clear that what happens in the Middle East carries consequences for Tunisia’s Jews and how they’re regarded by their compatriots.
In the wake of the synagogue attack last month, one Twitter user achieved temporary notoriety after discovering that one of the victims, Aviel Hadad, was to be buried in Israel. Hadad had held dual citizenship with Israel and—in much the same way as many Muslims ask to be buried in Mecca, without opining on Saudi politics—had asked to be interred there. Nevertheless, one Tunisian blogger called for Hadad’s Tunisian family to be expelled from the country and any officials who knew of his wishes to be prosecuted.
A prominent journalist, on discovering that a victim of the attack held an Israeli passport, asked if the country was mourning Zionists. Across the country’s ubiquitous radio channels, a major source of news and information for many, conversations on Tunisia’s attitudes to Jews came to be almost exclusively couched in discussions on the Palestinian and Israeli conflict, with the fate and welfare of Tunisian citizens judged by the actions of a distant state that few had any connections with.
Unsurprisingly, the president has proven no exception. On a visit to the Tunis suburb of Ariana the weekend after the attack, Saied rejected accusations of anti-Semitism, recalling his own family’s history of offering shelter to Tunisia’s Jews during the 1942-43 Nazi occupation of the country, when Tunisia’s Jews faced extreme persecution. From there, he demonstrated little difficulty in segueing effortlessly into a discussion on Israeli attacks on Palestine. Their relevance to Tunisia’s Jews was not made clear.
“Despite the fact that most of the Jews of Tunisia have never set foot in Israel and that their homeland has been Tunisia for centuries, they are taken as scapegoats for actions committed in another part of the world,” said Joachim Lellouche, the son of Jacob Lellouche, a prominent member of the Tunisia’s Jewish community. The younger Lellouche, who grew up spending time in both France and Tunisia, told FP, “Most of the Jews in the world feel close to Israel—because of their ancestral history; that does not mean that they support the internal policy of the government.”
Lellouche, who spent his childhood shuttling between France and his father’s busy restaurant in La Goulette, a port town near Tunis, recalled the kind of prejudice his family encountered. “It’s ridiculous, but there’s this thing about Jews smelling of the dead,” he said. “Around 15, maybe 20 years ago, my father told us about a [Tunisian] man who came up and sniffed him. The thing is, that was a poor and uneducated man. Now, since the revolution, mass media and fake news, those attitudes are everywhere.”
Lellouche has seen the consequences of Tunisia’s anti-Semitism. In 2015, his father’s kosher restaurant, Mama Lily, a mainstay of cultural life in the city, closed due to anti-Semitic threats.
“Tunisia’s Jews are always held to a higher account,” Amine Snoussi, a Tunisian political analyst, said. “People always expect them to prove their loyalty to Tunisia and to reject Israel before they’ll even engage with them. No one else has to deal with that.”
“Jews, or minorities even, don’t really fit with [Saied’s] agenda,” Snoussi continued. “He doesn’t have time for them. He deals in a very utopian vision. Anything that contradicts that—such as anti-Semitism or the recent attacks on the country’s undocumented black migrants—has to be rejected and denied.”
In Snoussi’s opinion, Saied’s entire reaction to the synagogue attack has been shaped, not so much by any sense of anti-Semitism, but by his almost exclusively populist mindset. “He’s sought to frame this in terms of Palestine,” Snoussi said. “That fits with his ideas of what the country thinks, as well as the wider Arab nationalist world. He doesn’t think about Tunisia’s Jews. He doesn’t think about minorities. He doesn’t care how linking them so clearly to Israel puts them at risk.”
That attitude is causing real damage. In early May, the University of Manouba in Tunis announced it would revoke the title of professor emeritus from Habib Kazdaghli, a Muslim-born historian of Tunisia’s Jewish traditions who had attended a French conference alongside Israelis.
Hardline attitudes to Israel appear hardwired into entire strata of Tunisian society. “It’s not just me,” Kazdaghli told Foreign Policy via a translator. “It goes further. Tunisia’s wrestlers and tennis players have all been accused of normalizing relations with Israel through sporting events.
“I’ve been studying this for 25 years,” he said. “This bothers them. Every time they do this”—referring to the implicit barriers placed in the way of his research by both government and academia—“they’re saying they’re anti-Semitic without actually saying they’re anti-Semitic.”
Beyond his own academic specialism, Kazdaghli has grounds to speak with authority on the topic. He was on the bus outside El Ghriba synagogue when the May attack took place.
“Now when something happens, the state doesn’t address it,” he said. “I don’t think it’s anti-Semitism on their part. It’s more about being scared of even addressing the issue, and that’s worse.”

To help you make the most of your visit, here’s a detailed New York City travel guide to must-do activities that will immerse you in the true essence of NYC.
1. Marvel at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
No visit to New York City is complete without seeing the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and democracy. 2. Stroll Through Central Park
Central Park, an 843-acre oasis in the heart of Manhattan, is a must-see for first-timers. Take a leisurely walk or rent a bike to explore its many paths, gardens, and iconic landmarks, such as Bethesda Terrace, Bow Bridge, and the Central Park Zoo. For a unique experience, consider a horse-drawn carriage ride.
In winter, the park transforms into a snowy wonderland, perfect for ice skating at Wollman Rink. During the warmer months, enjoy a picnic on the Great Lawn or a boat ride on the lake.
3. Experience Times Square
Times Square, often called "The Crossroads of the World," is a dazzling spectacle of neon lights, giant digital billboards, and bustling crowds. Visit this tourist attraction at night to witness its full vibrancy. Be sure to explore its many attractions, including the Broadway theaters, where you can catch a world-class show.
For a bird’s-eye view of the square, head to the top of the red stairs at the TKTS booth, where you can also score discounted tickets to Broadway shows.
4. Visit the Museums
NYC boasts some of the world’s best museums, and visiting at least a few is a must. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, or "The Met," houses an extensive collection spanning 5,000 years of art. Don’t miss the Egyptian Temple of Dendur and the rooftop garden with its spectacular views of Central Park.
The American Museum of Natural History is another New York City tourism site featuring fascinating exhibits on dinosaurs, space, and human cultures. The Hayden Planetarium, part of the museum, offers immersive space shows narrated by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.
For modern art enthusiasts, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum are essential stops. Both museums feature works by artists like Van Gogh, Picasso, and Warhol in architecturally stunning buildings.
5. Walk the High Line
The High Line, a unique urban park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side, offers a peaceful retreat from the city's hustle and bustle. This 1.45-mile-long park features beautiful gardens, public art installations, and stunning views of the Hudson River.
Start your walk at the southern end of the Meatpacking District and head north toward Hudson Yards. Along the way, you’ll pass through Chelsea, known for its vibrant art galleries and trendy restaurants.
6. Explore the Neighborhoods
New York City is a patchwork of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own character and charm. In Greenwich Village, stroll along the quaint streets lined with brownstones and visit Washington Square Park. In SoHo, indulge in some shopping at high-end boutiques and art galleries.
Explore the best places to visit in Chinatown for an authentic cultural experience with its bustling markets and delicious cuisine. Little Italy, right next door, offers a taste of Italian-American culture with its cozy cafes and restaurants.
For a taste of the city’s hipster culture, visit Williamsburg in Brooklyn. This neighborhood is known for its street art, indie music venues, and artisanal food markets.
7. Cross the Brooklyn Bridge
Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is a quintessential New York City experience. This historic bridge, completed in 1883, offers stunning views of the Manhattan skyline and the East River. Start your walk from the Manhattan side and head towards Brooklyn.
Once you reach Brooklyn, explore DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass), a trendy neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets, art galleries, and waterfront parks. Grab a bite to eat at the famous Grimaldi’s Pizzeria or enjoy a scoop of ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.
8. Taste the Diverse Cuisine
New York City is a food lover’s paradise, offering a vast array of cuisines from around the world. Start your culinary journey with a classic New York bagel topped with cream cheese and lox. For lunch, grab a slice of pizza from one of the city’s many pizzerias.
Head to Katz’s Delicatessen on the Lower East Side for a pastrami sandwich that’s been a local favorite since 1888. For dinner, explore the city’s diverse neighborhoods and their authentic eateries, from the dim sum in Chinatown to pasta in Little Italy.
Don’t forget to indulge in some street food, such as hot dogs, pretzels, and halal carts, which are quintessential New York experiences.
9. Enjoy the Skyline Views
For some of the best views of the city, visit one of its iconic observation decks. The Empire State Building offers a classic view from its 86th-floor observatory. For a more modern experience, head to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, where you can see Central Park and the Empire State Building.
For a different perspective, visit One World Observatory at the top of One World Trade Center. The view from the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere is nothing short of spectacular, offering a 360-degree panorama of the city and beyond.
10. Catch a Live Performance
New York City is synonymous with live entertainment. Beyond Broadway, the city offers a plethora of performance venues. Visit Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts to catch a ballet, opera, or classical music concert.
For a more intimate experience, head to one of the city’s many jazz clubs, such as the Blue Note or Birdland. If one travels to the Pacific Islands, to Borneo, Fiji, Vanuatu, or the Solomon Islands, it becomes obvious that the original inhabitants of those lands came from Africa. Even the so-called Aborigines of Australia and New Zealand have African roots.
3,500 years ago, natives from Tanganyika in East Africa arrived from the south-west, and from the north-east, Polynesians and Melanesians paddled their canoes to Fiji to settle in this new land. The natives gradually scattered across the country forming village groups throughout the islands. Until 150 years ago, warring and cannibalism among these early settlers was quite common. But when the first missionaries arrived in 1840 and introduced Christianity, the Fijians were transformed into the gentle, peace-loving devout Christians that we know today.
Of the 330 Fijian islands, only 106 are inhabited. Most of the population of just under one million live on the largest island, Vita Levu. Fiji islanders and Fiji-Indians are the main inhabitants while other islanders, Chinese and Europeans are in the minority. Fiji is a developing country with abundant forest, mineral and fish resources and a thriving sugar industry. Tourism is growing with approximately 350,000 visitors annually. Many come especially to dive among the beautiful coral reefs that surround each island.
The recent military coup has adversely affected Fiji's business economy and the European Union has suspended all aid until the next elections. This has resulted in a drastic down-turn in the building industry because of a lack of available funds. The economy of Fiji is severely depressed with 25% of the people living below the poverty line.
Bati are the traditional warriors of the Fiji Islands the word itself loosely translated means soldier, bodyguard in Fijian. As evidenced by their advanced form of agriculture, the pre-contact Fiji islands were a highly evolved, stratified society, interlocked and interdependent through trade. Different clans were responsible for various crafts or activities such as pottery-making, mat-weaving, canoe-building and salt production.

Xemnas - Black Swallowtail Butterfly - is a butterfly found throughout much of North America. It is the state butterfly of Oklahoma and New Jersey. Male black swallowtails can sometimes mimic the female wing-back pattern, and therefore succeed in reduced predation as well.
Xigbar - Emerald Swallowtail - is a butterfly of the genus Papilio belonging to the family Papilionidae. It is native to Southeast Asia, but is regularly kept in butterfly houses around the world.
Xaldin - Common Reed Beetle - can rapidly form dense stands of stems which crowd out or shade native vegetation in inland and estuary wetland areas. Non-native Phragmites can alter habitats by changing marsh hydrology; decreasing salinity in brackish wetlands; changing local topography; increasing fire potential; and outcompeting plants, both above and belowground.
Vexen - Hummingbird Moth - It was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae. As of 2018, its entire genome and mitogenome have been sequenced. The moth is distributed throughout the northern Old World from Portugal to Japan, but it breeds mainly in warmer climates. Three generations are produced in a year in Spain.
Lexaeus - Atlas Moth - is a large saturniid moth endemic to the forests of Asia. The species was first described by Carl Linnaeus in his 1758 10th edition of Systema Naturae.
Zexion - Glasswing Butterfly - Known for unique transparent wings that allow it to camouflage without extensive coloration. While its wings appear delicate, the butterfly is able to carry up to 40 times its own weight. In addition to its unique physiology, the butterfly is known for behaviors such as long migrations and lekking among males.
Saix - Ulysses Butterfly - is a large swallowtail butterfly of Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Its size varies depending on subspecies, but the wingspan is about 10.5 cm in Queensland. This butterfly is used as an emblem for tourism in Australia.
Axel - Cecropia Moth - Hyalophora cecropia is North America's largest native moth. It is a member of the family Saturniidae, or giant silk moths. Females have been documented with a wingspan of five to seven inches. These moths can be found all across North America as far west as Washington and north into the majority of Canadian provinces.
Demyx - Emperor Dragonfly - Coming in two colors, blue for males/green for females, the two sexes are easily distinguishable from one another. This species is most likely to be found near or on large ponds and lakes, but are often found skimming along canals and other flowing water bodies hunting for prey.
Luxord - Christmas Beetle - abundant in both urban and rural areas close to Christmas. Christmas beetles are large (20–30 mm long) members of the scarab family that are noisy and clumsy fliers, similar to the cockchafers of Europe.
Marluxia - Orchid Mantis - is a mantis from the tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It is one of several species known as flower mantises from their resemblance and behavior. In the wild, H. coronatus can be found in Indonesia.
Larxene - Owl Moth - Scientifically known as Brahmaea Hearseyi, the owl moth is a species of large moth found in some parts of Burma, China, and the Philippines. With a wingspan measuring up to 200 mm (7.9 inch), the owl moth is one of the largest moth species in the world.
Roxas - Sunset Moth - Famous worldwide, it is featured in most books on Lepidoptera and is much sought after by collectors, though many older sources misspell the species name as "ripheus". It is very colorful, though the iridescent parts of the wings do not have pigment; rather the colors originate from optical interference.
Xion - Silkworm Moth - It is an economically important insect, being a primary producer of silk. A silkworm's preferred food is white mulberry leaves, though they may eat other mulberry species and even osage orange. Domestic silk-moths are closely dependent on humans for reproduction, as a result of millennia of selective breeding.

ETIAS: Background, Aims & Eligible Countries.
Background:
ETIAS is among the measures undertaken as part of the Security Union. It will also help to achieve the objectives of the "European Agenda on Security" and the "European Agenda on Migration" in particular regarding border management and preventing cross-border crime and terrorism.
The European Commission first introduced the idea of a ETIAS in April 2016 in the convention "Stronger and Smarter Information Systems for Borders and Security" and adopted the proposal on 16 November 2016. After negotiations with the European Parliament and the Council the ETIAS Regulation (EU) 2018/1240 was adopted on 12 September 2018 and entered into force on 9 October 2018.
Aims of ETIAS:
The aim of ETIAS Europe is to provide a more secure journey to EU member countries as well as to strengthen the borders of the Schengen Area by pre-checking the data of travellers before they enter the zone.
The ETIAS visa waiver will allow eligible visitors to enter the Schengen Area for short-term stays of up to 90 days for tourism, transit or business. Travellers can move freely between the Schengen countries as there are no internal hard borders within the zone.
ETIAS EU is considered to be a visa waiver program, which means ETIAS is not a visa. Also, this special travel authorisation does not require applicants to physically go to an embassy or consulate. The whole process will be completed online.
Who needs an ETIAS visa waiver?
There are currently more than 50 nationalities who will need to apply for an ETIAS visa waiver though more countries may be added to the list in the future. It is key to understand that after ETIAS is implemented in November 2023, the current visa-free countries will continue to have this status, the only difference being the need to obtain a valid ETIAS along with their passports.
Citizens from non-eligible countries will need to apply for a Schengen Europe visa to enter the region. There are also different types of visas available for people who want to study or work in Europe as ETIAS is not a visa and is not designed for these purposes.
Following is the list of eligible countries for ETIAS:
i. Albania ii. Antigua and Barbuda iii. Argentina iv. Australia v. Bahamas vi. Barbados
vii. Bosnia and Herzegovina viii. Brazil ix. Brunei x. Canada xi. Chile xii. Colombia
xiii. Costa Rica xiv. Dominica xv. El Salvador xvi. Georgia xvii. Grenada xviii. Guatemala

xlix. Timor Leste l. Tonga li. Trinidad and Tobago lii. Tuvalu liii. Ukraine
liv. United Arab Emirates lv. United Kingdom lvi. United States of America lvii. Uruguay lviii. Venezuela
ETIAS countries list:
i. Austria ii. Andorra iii. Belgium iv. Bulgaria v. Croatia vi. Cyprus vii. Czech Republic
viii. Denmark ix. Estonia x. Finland xi. France xii. Germany xiii. Greece xiv. Hungary
xv. Iceland xvi. Italy xvii. Latvia xviii. Liechtenstein xix. Lithuania xx. Luxembourg xxi. Malta
xxii. Monaco xxiii. Netherlands xxiv. Norway xxv. Romania xxvi. San Marino xxvii. Spain xxviii. Slovakia xxix. Slovenia xxx. Sweden xxxi. Switzerland xxxii. Poland xxxiii. Portugal xxxiv. Vatican City
How does the ETIAS system work?
Applicants will need to answer a series of questions by entering basic information such as their name, address, date of birth, and passport details. There will also be some questions regarding health and security.
The information provided by applicants will be screened using relevant security databases. The majority of applications will be processed within minutes though some may take longer.
Once approved, the ETIAS visa waiver will be sent to the applicant electronically. Travellers will be able to present this special travel document when they arrive in the Schengen Area to gain entry.
Why a European travel authorisation?
ETIAS will protect visitors to the Schengen Area as well as European citizens and residents. The online ETIAS application process has been designed to be hassle-free and straightforward, and there will be no need to go to an embassy or consulate.
