Rallying around graduate student parents

Rallying around graduate student parents
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last month, the MIT Office of Graduate Education celebrated National Student Parent Month with features on four MIT graduate student parents. These students’ professional backgrounds, experiences, and years at MIT highlight aspects of diversity in our student parent population.
Diana Grass is one of MIT’s most involved graduate student parents. Grass is a third-year PhD student in medical engineering and medical physics in the joint Harvard-MIT Health Sciences and Technology program, and the mother of two children. As co-founder and co-president of MIT’s Graduate First Generation and Low-Income student group (GFLI@MIT), Grass is a strong advocate for first-generation grad students and student parents.
Fifth-year civil and environmental engineering PhD student Fabio Castro is a new father. Prior to MIT, he was an engineer and logistics manager at an energy firm in Brazil, and volunteered with Doctors without Borders in South Sudan. He and his wife, Amanda, welcomed their daughter, Sofia, last fall.
First-year MIT Sloan MBA student Elizabeth Doherty shared her experience as a career changer and mother of two young children. Doherty began her career as a lower elementary school teacher, working in both public and private schools. After switching gears to work as a senior digital learning specialist at Bain & Co., she recognized the importance of company culture, which led her to pursue a master’s degree in business administration.
Matthew Webb is working on his second MIT degree as a second-year PhD student in the Center for Transportation and Logistics. He shared the ways in which his grad student experience is different now as a father of three, than when he was a master’s student in the Operations Research program without children.
All four student parents came from different professional backgrounds and departments, but one theme was consistent in all their stories: the support of the MIT families community. From pitching in to help new parents to coordinating play dates and sharing information, MIT’s student parents are there for one another.
For Doherty, family-friendliness was a top priority when she selected an MBA program. MIT stood out to her because of the family housing, the on-campus childcare, and the opportunities to meet other student families. Doherty felt affirmed in her decision to attend MIT when she enrolled and the MIT Sloan School of Management reached out with a welcoming note and a gift. “It highlighted how thoughtful MIT has been about creating a strong infrastructure for student parents,” she says.
Grass points to the importance her family placed on moving into an on-campus residence, as her family lacked community in their previous off-campus home. This move to MIT’s campus added convenience to the family’s daily routine, and helped them meet other student families.
Before returning to MIT for his PhD, Webb was unaware of the support offered to graduate student families. He was pleasantly surprised to discover the Office of Graduate Education’s resources and programming for families through an email his first semester. His wife Rachel and their three children also take advantage of the activities hosted by MIT Spouses and Partners Connect while Webb goes to class. Some favorites have included ice cream and bubble tea outings, “crafternoons,” and going on a tour of Fenway Park.
Castro remembers how his family housing neighbors showed up for him and his family when they needed it most. In anticipation of their first child’s birth, Castro and his wife, Amanda, arranged for Amanda’s parents to come to Cambridge to help them in the early weeks as first-time parents. When these plans unexpectedly fell through, their community in Westgate stepped up. For weeks, other MIT families came by to teach them how to care for their newborn, and dropped off meals at their door.
He was touched by these gestures — the support was a huge benefit of choosing to live on campus, and something that would not have happened had he lived in an off-campus apartment. “It’s something I’ll never forget,” Castro says.

Kazakhstan: Forging Partnerships and Peacekeeping Efforts
Minister Heappey Meets with Key Officials In a significant diplomatic mission, the UK's Minister for the Armed Forces, James Heappey, embarked on a visit to Central Asia this week, actively engaging in high-level talks aimed at enhancing security and defense collaboration. Throughout his journey, he traversed Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia, where he held meetings with defense leaders and military chiefs, with a resolute aim to strengthen international partnerships. In Kazakhstan on Tuesday, Minister Heappey held substantive discussions with prominent officials, including Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko, Deputy Defence Minister Lieutenant General Sultan Burkutbayevich Kamaletdinov, and members of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Security of the Mazhilis of Parliament. Importantly, the focal point of their talks centered on exploring avenues for future cooperation, especially in the realm of peacekeeping missions. Additionally, Minister Heappey commended Kazakhstan for its support of the sanctions imposed on Russia in response to the conflict in Ukraine. For over two decades, the United Kingdom has actively contributed to the development of Kazakhstan's Peace Operations Centre (KAZCENT). Notably, this collaborative effort has significantly bolstered Kazakh deployments in peace support operations, such as UN missions in countries like Côte d’Ivoire, Lebanon, and Western Sahara. Crucially, the foundation of these efforts lies in the provision of military English language training by the UK.
Uzbekistan: Regional Security and Historic Commemoration
Minister Engages in Security Talks and Pays Tribute Continuing his journey, Minister Heappey arrived in Uzbekistan on Wednesday. There, he engaged in regional security discussions with the Minister of Defence, Lieutenant General Bakhodir Kurbanov, and met with the Commander of the National Guard, General Rustam Jo’rayev. Mongolia: Historic Visit and Peacekeeping Partnership

During his visit, he met with Defence Minister Gürsediin Saikhanbayar to discuss cooperation in the realm of peacekeeping missions. The relationship between the UK and Mongolia holds special significance, with their soldiers having served together in Afghanistan and as peacekeepers in South Sudan. Notably, 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the UK becoming the first Western nation to establish diplomatic relations with Mongolia.
Minister Heappey's Statement
In a statement, Minister for the Armed Forces, Rt Hon James Heappey MP, underscored the importance of these visits, explicitly aligning them with the strategic approach outlined in the recent Defence Command Paper. EXTREMELY successful op today. Someone handed me a second, larger, weird Soviet mag pouch hip rig thing, and we were in someone else's fighting position so I was donated six packs of cigs and a grenade that they left there.
In the bigger picture, it's getting bizarre. It was a recon gig, and I'm just telling you without shame that Brandon and I were hanging back with the bulk of the unit, pulling security as it were, while the commander, the drone operator and one other guy did the sneaky business into town to reconnify shit.
Here's the thing. When I first came here in 2017, I did what they told me. The few western guys who've fought in Donbas with no military experience whatsoever came here and just did what they were told. Fucking Craig Lang came here and did what he was told. Hell, he's somehow got the ankle bracelet off and is currently in some unit doing what they fucking tell him. This should be obvious. It's a military. It's a war. You don't just get to run the fuck around doing whatever you want. Like a fucking five year old knows that. Only damn thing they know about the planet. Army means big man yells at you and tells you what to do.
So imagine my confusion when I shit you not 40 westerners, wacky expensive kit and all, stroll into that town like they fucking own the place, talking shit loud enough to perk the ears of plate carrier wearing journalists in fucking south sudan. Just strolling on in, because they decided that they should do recon, all 40 of them. When we left, we just pulled up security behind us, for all I know they're still out there, taking fucking selfies.
The only logical explanation I can think of is some combination of them being a bunch of airsofters and them all meeting up in Lviv and circle jerking like "yeah man, they want our help, they get it OUR way, man, fuck yeah stack bodies I did 5,000 tours now I fight war how I want"
Anyway, we were already avoiding all other Westerners, me and Brandon, but I developed my Latvian cover identity a little more to explain why I speak English at a native level. See, I come from an extremely isolated village, and my father, a noble, greatly admires the British empire, which my village believes is still around. He had the finest tutors teach me English so I could attain favor with the King after I finish my studies at Cromwell University--I was, in fact, passing though Ukraine on my way to England when this war kicked off.

This is a FASCINATING read; highly recommend that you take a few minutes to look at it. Some highlights (emphasis mine, added for readability for fellow ADHDers):
Some consider Midori Takada's forgotten 1983 album Through the Looking Glass to be one of the first YouTubecore albums. Uploaded in 2013, the original video has since been delisted, but it did go on to accrue millions of views—which was followed by Takada playing a set of worldwide tour dates, including her first in the United States. Other albums by different artists followed suit, many from the same 1980s Japanese ambient scene.
I love that her career unexpectedly got a boost thirty years later!
The most famous upload of them all (not ambient, but too known to not mention) came in 2017, when a video of the 1984 city pop song "Plastic Love" by Mariya Takeuchi became mind-bogglingly popular. Once a Japanese bargain-bin staple, people started buying it for $60 a pop in the United States. It has 45 million views today, along with an Olympic swimming pool's worth of fan art, vaporwave remixes, and memes.
You know what else is commonly found by the bin at sidewalk sales and street markets? Disco polo. Different country, different genre, but same situation. Petition for disco polo to become the staple music of an internet aesthetic next!
Wynn watched the video comments skyrocket into the thousands. Then he and his wife were vacationing in Tokyo when he heard 1979 play on hotel-lobby speakers—without any Japanese promotional efforts that he knew of. And while YouTube revenue for the video hasn't been huge, its exposure has had one noticeable effect: physical sales. The 1979 vinyl edition is now on its fourth pressing.
Imagine that you’re a musician and you make music on the side but that’s not even your main gig, it’s just a thing you do out of love for the art form, and then you’re on vacation on a totally different continent and you’re chilling in your hotel and all of a sudden your music??? is playing over the hotel lobby’s system??? And then people are buying it on vinyl and suddenly you’re making money??? The Internet truly is a magical place.
(This is also the guy who did the music for Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, by the way, in case you were wondering what his main gig actually is.)
Massimo Airoldi, a professor at Emlyon Business School, co-authored a 2016 paper titled Follow the algorithm: An exploratory investigation of music on YouTube. It proposes that the algorithm partially leans on sequential viewing: if a significant number of users watch video B after video A, the two are considered related and therefore recommended. Within this framework, genres stop being simple technical distinctions and become granular concepts based on crowdsourced human-behavior patterns. Utilizing network analysis, the study estimates that viewing habits cause the algorithm to connect videos via recommendations, thereby knitting tight genre cliques in the process.
Seven out of 50 video clusters the researchers identified are deemed "situational" music. This designation doesn't operate under the standard concept of genres but rather the context in which the music takes place. This includes relaxation music like "Ambient/Chillout," "Sounds of Nature," and the ASMR-affiliated "Hair Dryer Sound." The paper concludes that situational music, sometimes deemed trivial by musicologists, is growing in popularity. They also found a cluster of "Ethiopia/South Sudan Music," suggesting the context of a local scene comparable to '80s Japanese ambient music.
This is so wild. I already suspected that my YouTube recommendations were based on what other people who had viewed the same videos had watched, but I hadn’t considered the effect that the algorithm would have on the very concept of genre.
Kokubo first began recording in the '80s, when he felt overwhelmed by most popular music. "The arrangement of the rhythm, chords, melody, and lyrics seemed very imposing, focusing so much on trying to stimulate you that you feel nothing at all," he says.
He's upfront about a spiritual focus in his compositions. "Yaoyorozu-no-kami is a [Shinto] belief that in all things reside a spirit," Kokubo says. "In the context of my work, much of it uses sounds of nature as a base (the chirping of birds, the murmur of a small stream, the sound of ocean waves, etc.), and as I apply more and more sounds, I make sure both the natural and instrumental are treated with equal value... to me, they're not different sounds; they share the same soul."
I thought this part was really nice. What a lovely way to approach music. Usually when I hear about Shinto practices it’s in the context of physical objects, so the idea that there are spirits in intangible things like sounds immediately struck me.
These were just a few pieces of the article that I found especially interesting, but I really do urge you to read the whole thing. If you’re interested in ambient music, obscure artists, the inner workings of the YouTube algorithm, or success in the age of the Internet, this is for you, but even if you’re not interested any of those things, you’ll still learn something cool.

Palestinians 'torn' as Israel seeks wealthy Gulf tourists
JERUSALEM, Nov 15, (AP): When the United Arab Emirates agreed to normalize relations with Israel, the Palestinians decried the move as a “betrayal” of both Jerusalem, where they hope to establish the capital of their future state, and the Al -Aqsa mosque compound, the city's holiest Muslim site. But with Israel now courting wealthy Gulf tourists and establishing new air links to the major travel hubs of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Palestinians in east Jerusalem could soon see a tourism boon after months in which the coronavirus transformed the Holy City into a ghost town. “There will be some benefits for the Palestinian sector of tourism, and this is what I'm hoping for,” said Sami Abu-Dayyeh, a Palestinian businessman in east Jerusalem who owns four hotels and a tourism agency.
Muslims gather for Friday prayer, next to the Dome of the Rock Mosque in the Al Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem's old city, Friday, Nov. 6, 2020. The Palestinian leadership has condemned the United Arab Emirates' decision to forge ties with Israel as a “betrayal,” but it could lead to a tourism bonanza for Palestinians in east Jerusalem as Israel courts wealthy Gulf travelers. "Forget about politics, we have to survive." Palestinian leaders have sharply rejected the recent decisions by the UAE, Bahrain and Sudan to establish ties with Israel because they severely weakened a longstanding Arab consensus that recognition only be extended in return for Palestinian statehood. The Palestinians hope to establish a state including east Jerusalem and the West Bank, territories occupied by Israel in the 1967 war. Arab support, seen as a key form of leverage in decades of on-again, off-again peace negotiations, now appears to be evaporating, leaving the Palestinians arguably weaker and more isolated than at any point in recent history.
Peace In a striking development last week, a delegation of Israeli settlers visited the Emirates to discuss business opportunities. The Palestinians view settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem as the main obstacle to peace, and most of the international community considers them to be illegal. But the prospect of expanded religious tourism could end up benefiting Israelis and Palestinians alike, as wealthy Gulf tourists and Muslim pilgrims from further afield take advantage of new air links and improved relations to visit Al-Aqsa and other holy sites.
Israel considers all of Jerusalem to be its capital, and its Jerusalem Municipality is organizing conferences and seminars to help tourism operators market the city to Gulf travelers. “I'm very excited because I think it opens us up to a new era of Muslim tourism that we never really had,” said Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, the deputy mayor of Jerusalem. "Even though we have peace with Jordan and Egypt, I've never really seen any Egyptian tourists or Jordanian tourists because the peace wasn't a warm peace." Hassan-Nahoum, who recently visited the Emirates and is a cofounder of the UAE-Israel Business Council, said the municipality is reaching out to local Arab tour operators to ensure the benefits extend to all.
Advantage “You have mixed feelings,” she said. "Some of them are a little bit suspicious, (but) most of them understand that this is going to be incredibly prosperous for them, because ultimately they're Arab speaking and so they have, I think, a unique advantage." Abu-Dayyeh expects up to 28 flights a day arriving in Tel Aviv from Dubai and Abu Dhabi, global travel hubs for long-haul carriers Emirates and Etihad, making it easier for travelers from the Far East and South America to reach the Holy Land. He's confident Palestinian operators will be able to compete.
“We're on the ground here and we've been giving this service for many years, for hundreds of years,” he said. Other Palestinians appear to be more skeptical. More than a dozen Palestinian shop owners in Jerusalem's Old City, which is largely shut down because of the coronavirus, declined to comment on the push for Gulf tourism, saying it was too politically sensitive. There are also concerns that an Israeli push to promote tourism to Al-Aqsa could heighten tensions. The hilltop esplanade in the Old City, home to the Al-Aqsa mosque and the iconic Dome of the Rock shrine, is the third holiest site in Islam. It is also the holiest site for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount because it was the location of the two Biblical temples in ancient times.
The site is a raw nerve in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and tensions have soared in recent years as religious and nationalist Jews have visited in ever-larger numbers, escorted by the Israeli police. Last month a delegation of Emirati officials visited the site, entering through a gate normally used by Israelis and under an Israeli security escort. A small group of Palestinians heckled them. In August, Palestinian demonstrators burned a portrait of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan near the Dome of the Rock.
