today was the day. feelings were going to be shared, and it will all depend on the answer given. will he just brush them off or accept? you could never completely figure it out with ikari. 

sure, you knew how he seems too straightforward and rude (but honest) at times, but there are also moments when even a slight brush against you has him reeling back, causing him to create a 6-foot distance between you two. 

during those moments you don’t really see the tinge of red that makes its way up his neck and dusting the tips of his ears. nor do you get to hear the rapid beating against his ribcage as if his heart was going to jump right out and lay itself on a platter for you.

maybe if you were able to gauge how he gets in those moments, you’d be able to see what exactly you were dealing with.

a lovestruck maiden who doesn’t know how to express how he feels. romantically that is.

but hey, if only you knew what was going on through his mind when he invited you out to walk around the shopping district. 

sweaty palms on your forearms and loud words bursting your eardrums that seemed to convey just what he wanted to ask.

“WOULD YOU WANT TO GO SOMEWHERE WITH ME THIS WEEKEND?!” wide-eyed and confused, a quiet yeah sure was all you could respond with.

after a couple of text messages being sent back and forth, setting up and planning the details of the ‘hangout,’ it just had you even more prepared for what you had planned to do after. which now brings you to where you are now, walking the streets side by side with ikari. 

said ‘hangout’ consisted of walking through the shopping district and later hitting up a bakery to relax at before walking around some more. 

That was how you had planned for it to go; you just didn’t account for the fact that every brush that both your arms would have him jumping back then coming back to stand next to you over and over again. nor did it help that every time you’d go to reach for his hand to intertwine your fingers with his, he would move his arm and point at everything he found interesting or shove his hands in his pockets. 

feeling yourself drown in defeat, you don’t seem to notice the erratic bundle of nerves ikari seems to be buzzing with. the conversation was great, but both parties didn’t seem to notice each other spiral in turmoil as he just kept replaying his conversation with shiki that didn’t seem to help his situation either.

“yeah dude, i think that’s the way you should go about it.” shiki nods along in agreement.

“really? just like that? should'nt i prepare the mood or maybe take them out to a fancy restaurant before asking them?” ikari couldn’t help but let his head swarm with questions of if’s and maybe’s. thinking of every scenario that could go wrong.

“yao man. if you feel that they are the one for you, then you should make it so no one can have the chance to. i mean, you two already made date plans for what you’re going to do, right? so just go through with them, and at the end, when you’re coming back, ask them. just make sure you have everything ready.” shiki was trying so hard to keep his laugh in. hearing his friend's plan for his first date was nothing he could have thought of. he knew how his friend was, but never did he think he would move that fast. 

sure, he knew that what he was telling ikari to do was a little messed up and maybe a bit overboard, but from what he saw, he knew that both sides reciprocated their feelings for one another. he just wanted you to know the seriousness of ikari’s feelings—even if what he knew ikari was going to do was make a fool of himself.

leading to present time with ikari toying around with the little box he has in his pocket. 

he just didn’t know when the right moment was to ask you. should he wait till the end of the hangout or during dinner? should he surprise you while you’re looking through some shop windows and wait for you to turn around? 

ordering both your drinks and dessert, he just decided to wait till he got you back home. that way, once he asked, he’d know his answer if you decided to just slam the door on him.

but nothing could’ve prepared him for what happened once he sat down.

THIS WASN’T THE PLAN!!

he hasn’t even shown you the ring he went to lengths to get. the days and hours he spent agonizing over which design would be perfect to present to you. 

but if the moment was right, then he should do it now.

startled by the sudden change in his position from him sitting right in front of you to him kneeling right next to you. seeing him rummage through his pocket and pulling out the velvety onyx-colored box. and hearing him clear his throat, did you start to notice the scene he was creating and the pairs of eyes that started to stick to you guys?

nothing could have prepared you to hear his next words.

“[name], when i first met you, i didn’t know i would feel the things i do for you now. no one knows where they end up, and no one knows what life has in store for them. but i do know that i see myself spending the rest of my life with you. if you can give me the chance to make you the happiest in the world, would you marry me?” as if the entire bakery was hanging onto each word, now they were waiting on your response.

my god.

being proposed to was not on the agenda today. 

sure expressing your feelings to him was the end goal, but you’re pretty sure you didn’t travel in time to your proposal that should’ve happened AFTER being with ikari for a while.

but now that he is right in front of you, you see everything in full effect. the rosy-red-tinged cheeks. the narrowed eyes that seem to look at everything before looking back at you every millisecond that seems to pass. the shaking in his hands that are holding the box that displays the gorgeous, dainty silver ring that shines brighter as the sunbeams reflect on it. 

everything that seems to give you the answer to the question you’ve been agonizing over the entire day.

but now you had to refocus back on what’s at hand.

the marriage proposal.

laying your hands over his. the gasps that the watchers seem to release, thinking that maybe this might not be the happy ending they thought they were going to witness today.

“yes, of course, but we need to discuss a few things before you put this on me.” the sigh of relief that he lets out as he focuses on just the first word. 

the tight embrace that surrounds you squeezes out the air in your lungs, but it doesn’t silence out the cheers that arise when the crowd sees the positive reaction from ikari.

a few minutes of people congratulating you two seem to take up your time before you can finally talk to him alone.

“i know i said yes, but we have to talk about something first.” fiddling with the box that seemed to stay in your hands the whole time, the weight of the emotions in it seemed to carry weighed it down in your palms. “although i'm very happy with everything that just happened, we haven’t even started dating. let alone go on dates. i’m happy you see me as someone you want to spend the rest of your life with; i want to actually court each other before even thinking about marriage. i mean i barely got to hold your hand, and i've been trying to do that all day!”

looking at him, you can see the gears start to turn, but they seem to come to a halt after meeting your eyes. 

“i was taught that holding hands meant you wanted to marry me.” hiding his face with his hands didn’t seem to cover the redness that seemed to travel to his whole being. 

you didn’t want to embarrass him any further by laughing, so you tried holding it back by holding his hand. 

“we can talk about marriage a little bit later on. for now we need to talk about giving you lessons in romance.” pulling his hands up to your face to leave a peck on his knuckles, you don’t expect him to reel back his hands to his chest.

“holding hands was already a big deal, but i’m not ready or prepared to make kids either.” you already knew you were in it for the long haul, but boy did you have your work cut out for you.

"I'm sorry." He stuttered as he come near you. "I should've just talked about it calmly but-" He tries to explain his part and sigh at his mistakes. Slowly pouting as you scoff, you rolled your eyes to glare at him.

"Shut up. You're always like that!" You taunted as you huffed, adverting your eyes somewhere. "I'm sorry too, okay."

Without a warning, a hand grabs both your cheek as Ikari made you look at him. Meeting his grin, he chuckled. "I'm sorry, it won't happen again, really."

Pouting at him, you immediately grab his collar of shirt and crash your lips to him- so is he, pulling you close to his face with force- I guess it is not that bad, afterall.
