Culture & Company Mentoring at ACCES
Right before the holiday season our team at Culture & Company volunteered our time to mentor with ACCES Employment. If you’re not familiar with ACCES and you’re in a place to hire we highly suggest you connect with them.
Tumblr media
ACCES is a leader in connecting employers with qualified employees who face barriers to employment and require assistance integrating into the Canadian job market.
During our afternoon session ACCES connected us with candidates with a wealth of experience in sales and marketing. The candidates hailed from various parts of India, China, and South America. Here are a few of our observations:
·         The candidates ranged from 7-15 years of industry specific experience in various sectors including consumer packaged goods, pharma, advertising and technology.
·         All of the individuals worked on large scale, multi-national projects with vast budgets of $10 mil plus.
·         Most candidates hailed from global organizations where they worked for at least 5 years, demonstrating loyalty and stability.
·         All of the candidates impressed us with their clear and concise English skills, their ability to demonstrate hard work and presented in a professional manner.
·         None of the candidates concerned us that they wouldn’t be able to integrate into the Canadian work culture.
Although some Canadian employers are open to candidates with no previous Canadian work experience, most are still hesitant to do so. Here at Culture & Company we encourage diversity and work with our clients to showcase top talent, which often includes individuals with international experience. As organizations focus heavily on new target audiences and globalization, now is the time to consider an out of the box candidate.
Here are some photos from the event:

Thanksgiving weekend in Canada is a time to give thanks
We’d like to give thanks for our health and well-being as well as that of our family. We’re lucky to have the opportunity to work with great candidates and great clients across North America.
As you reflect this long weekend, you’ll also be thinking how nice it is to have an extra day to spend with family and friends.
Tumblr media
Imagine you had even more quality time for yourself? Sweden is taking a serious look at having a 6-hour work day. Why? For more time with family as well as more productivity.
The average workday in the US is now almost 9 hours. Take into account that most people are still “plugged in” to work devices (phones, email) when they get home means everyone is working longer than ever before.
Through studies, they’ve found that humans tend to lose focus over longer periods of time. Hence, going to a 6 hour work day would allow more productive hours of work and more work/life balance. Many companies in Sweden have already switched. It’s just a matter of time before more European companies do the same. What it means for the organizations and the employees of companies on a 6 hour work day is that there are less distractions and more focused work hours.
For some organizations like HP, they needed to completely rethink their work process and how they were meeting customers’ needs. They created a program called “Reinventing Work’ to meet both customer needs as well as those of overworked engineers. This program led to more productive and happier employees as well as reduced employee turnover.
Companies all over the world are looking at ways to keep employees engaged, happy and productive.
What is your company doing for employee work life balance?

The Reality of the Freelance Economy
We’ve talked about the resurgence in the freelance/consultant market. Some seem to really thrive in it and others struggle.
There are a lot of positives to talk about. More innovation and entrepreneurism. This is one of the important ones. People have had the courage like never before to embrace their passion and start their own business. For some, the freelance economy means they get more work/life balance including more time with their families.
Tumblr media
Technology is partially to blame. With mobile devices, remote working technologies and connectivity, it was only a matter of time. The freelance economy in the US is said to be about 34% of the workforce. We would expect it’s a similar number in Canada.
This is happening to such an extent that it’s helping reshape work environments in general. It’s allowing for more flexibility in terms of where you work (at the office, at home, from a coffee shop, etc.), it’s also forcing companies to rethink how to augment their workforce with freelancers instead of full time staff.
We at Culture & Company have launched a contract business. The writing has been on the wall for some time. It’s official now.
Most people only think about the positives of going into business for themselves or freelancing, but rarely think about the possible negatives which include less face time with others. That has led to some issues with freelancers feeling “isolated” and over time developing stifled social skills. In some cases, it can also stagnate idea generation and brainstorming. But the idea of contractors/consultants feeling lonely, missing the office banter and the interaction with others is very real.
There are things you can do to prevent loneliness and stagnation:
·Make sure some of your freelance work is on-site so that you can interact with others
·If you do have to work alone, mix it and up and work from a coffee shop or other location
·Connect with people from your network that you admire and can learn from
·Attend seminars and courses so that you keep learning new things
Do you agree with some of the positives and negatives of freelancing/consulting?
How has your freelance/contract experience been and could you go back to the corporate world?
If you’re a marketing contractor, get in touch with us!
