A New See Me Story Approaches!
Tumblr media
I know it's been months and months and months, but I wrote something! Is it the new big story I've been working on? No! Is it a multi-chapter See Me side story? Yes! I hope you enjoy reading as Wesley tries to get over one of his biggest fears. More to come soon but the first chapter is up right now! You can read it on my AO3 page by clicking right here. Enjoy!

Favorites Meme!
Thanks for thinking of me @deemoyza! I love this kind of thing.
Favorite painter: I say I love this kind of thing and then I don't pick a favorite. When it comes to figure-based art, I love the well-known classics, Alphonse Mucha (just lush and gorgeous), John William Waterhouse (softly cluttered, often a little unsettled) and Philip de Laszlo (fiery and opalescent). If we're talking animal art, I love the equine illustrations of Wesley Dennis (powerful nostalgia), all the shaggy warm creatures of Rosa Bonheur, and Theophile Steinlen's endless snoozing cats. And then with landscapes, there's John Brett (airy pure blues), Frederic Edwin Church (ethereal), and Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis (otherworldly, surreal).
Favorite poet/writer: That's even harder. Let's focus on just poets because it's narrower. I once heard Emily Dickinson described as terrifying in her spare use of language, and that's always resonated with me -- and it's something I've tried to angle towards in some of my own poetry.
Favorite band: Am realizing I don't connect as much with bands as with solo artists, so while there are lots of individual songs by bands that I like, I don't have a big pool to draw from. I've always liked the Something Real album by Meg & Dia -- very mid-2000s rock with a lot of cluttered lyrics. But I don't know enough about them overall to really say I'm a fan of them.
Favorite meal & drink: My family's macaroni and cheese recipe, which is kind of weird and atypical (it has cheese, but not an actual cheese sauce) but so cheddary and hearty and good. When I was learning to cook, mastering the macaroni and cheese was a big milestone. And then for drinks, a really good hot chocolate. One of our local restaurants has an amazing one with an enormous homemade marshmallow. For stuff in a packet, I love Starbuck's salted caramel version.
Favorite outfit aesthetic/style: I would maybe call it low-key romantic? I wear a lot of skirts, and I typically always put on jewelry when I go out. I like dark colors (though I've been branching into brighter colors and pastels), some light goth and medievaly elements. I like airy flowy lines, but I also want structure and shape. Am a huge fan of boots with skirts. Current favorite outfit is a dark floral corduroy mini over black leggings, black tee, and a long open-knit burgundy sweater. And of course boots. Adding a cameo necklace or pin gives it a little bit of Victoriana.
Favorite singer: Right now, it's a lot of Tori Amos. She has so many good stand-out lines, beautiful melodies, and also just so much music I still haven't even listened to, even after being a fan for well over ten years. Recently discovered her song "The Maids of Elfen-Mere" and may have to check out the album.
Favorite item you own: Hard to pick one. The year I finished writing The Price and Prey of Magic, someone, without knowing what was in the book, got me a pendant with stag antlers for Christmas. Stags are a big motif in the novel, and it felt like such a lovely, special coincidence. The person has since died, and so wearing the necklace is extra meaningful to me now; I wore it for my first book signing.
Favorite perfume: I don't wear perfume regularly. But my favorite scents are fairly straightforward -- vanilla, orange, rosemary and mint -- pretty simple stuff.
Thank you again! As for tagging, if you see this and would like to do it, go for it!

Reblog a fic you think needs more love
Today's fic rec is see me by @whatthisfemsheplikes
I remember back in the day when mo-mo first posted this fic on her previous blog and loved it then too it definitely needs more love
CW pet trope and dehumanising
In a universe where borrowers are kept as pets Tori works for Borrower control and Wesley is a borrower who keeps trying to escape from a pet shop.
Loads of fantastic trust building between them and also featuring Kipper the dog who is the goodest boy around 💕

I feel like 11. "this must be a mistake" 12. "Fine ill go with you", and 15. "you have lied to me" are all amazing and i would love to see a story molded around any of these (or a combo!) if you are looking for the inspiration!
This one took a little bit longer to get done. Why? Because I just kept writing and writing and writing so... this one will be a bit of a longer "short" story. I think it would've been a lot shorter when I was convinced that I only had an idea for a story using one of these prompts, but I wound up using all three and it developed pretty naturally on its own. I just loved writing these scenes with Tori and Wesley! This one and the last prompt I wrote will definitely be going in the canon short story collection on my AO3 page sometime soon. This one was really fun to write, so thank you for the prompt!
No spice in this one for anyone who might be worried about reading NSFW content. This is just a fluffy date for Wesley's birthday. I hope you enjoy!
Setting: 3 months after See Me ended
“This must be a mistake,” Wesley said as he stared at the black, borrower-sized suit that was laid out on the bed. He stood on the comforter, staring at it in disbelief that something could even be made for someone his size. After all, where did most humans think that a borrower would be going to get dressed up like that? It even had a navy-blue necktie to go with it, which made Wesley realize that he didn’t know how to tie a tie. He’d never needed to know until now.
After a few more seconds of silence while he gazed at the suit with wide eyes, Wesley turned around to meet Tori’s gaze as she sat on the floor behind him. She gave him a small smile as she nodded towards the suit.
“It’s yours,” she said, making him shake his head in disbelief. “I ordered it online with your measurements and everything.”
“I... didn’t think that anything this nice would be made for borrowers,” Wesley replied. “I mean, we’re always just told to wear whatever scraps of fabric or doll clothes that we’re given.”
“I think if some companies are able to make more comfortable clothes at your size like what you wear everyday then there’s gotta be at least a few people out there who might make some borrower formal wear,” Tori shrugged as Wesley knelt down and brushed his hand against the smooth fabric of the suit jacket.
“I guess, but...” Wesley looked over his shoulder to face her again while his fingers still lingered on the fabric. “What would I need this for?”
“Well,” she sang, now looking a bit nervous. After picking at the skin on her palm a bit while her cheeks turned pink, Tori took a deep breath and slightly leaned closer to him. “I was thinking that... we could go on a date tomorrow night.”
“What?” he shrieked, springing to his feet while his hands flew away from the suit as if he’d been burned. “A date? Outside? With other humans? And me out in the open? In a suit?”
“Whoa, it’s okay, Wes,” Tori said softly as she held up her hands in surrender. “I have it all planned out where it would just be us. We’d have a nice dinner, maybe watch a movie afterwards, and just enjoy each other’s company. I don’t really want to give too much away, because I’d prefer it to be a surprise, but trust me. You wouldn’t be in any danger.”
The longer she talked, the more Wesley started to frantically pace back and forth across the bed, his arms wrapped protectively around his torso.
“This sounds crazy, Tori,” he groaned, looking at the comforter under his feet rather than see the disappointment that was surely forming on her face. “I mean, what would people think when they see a human and a borrower at some fancy restaurant together, sharing a meal? There’s no way that really any restaurant in the whole city would even have any furniture that’s my size. And, even if they did, I’m sure that anyone who saw me sitting with you would just laugh or hurl a bunch of insults at us. None of that is worth it for a night out. I know I don’t want to hear any of that, and I don’t want anyone to talk like that to you either. Maybe let’s just do something else, like-”
When he was about to turn around for another lap across the bed, Wesley suddenly stopped when he felt Tori’s gentle fingers against his back. Even though his mind told him that she wouldn’t, his gut instincts braced him to be lifted in the air in a palm or a fist, but no such movement came. Just like always, Tori didn’t pick him up without permission. Instead, her fingers started to slowly rub up and down his back, a motion that she’d done a million times that never stopped making him relax. This time was no different as he leaned into her touch and finally allowed himself to breathe.
“Wes,” Tori said in a soft voice. “I promise you that none of those things will happen. We’d be going out, just the two of us, and we wouldn’t have to worry about anyone else. Nobody is going to be staring, laughing, or insulting us. I just thought it’d be fun to get all dressed up and have a night away together, but if you don’t want to then we don’t have to. It was just a suggestion. We can do whatever you want. After all...” she bent closer to him and gave him a kiss on his cheek. “It is your birthday.”
“We don’t know that for sure,” Wesley mumbled with a disappointed look on his face. “It’s not like anyone cares to keep track of that stuff for borrowers.”
“Well, we know the month,” Tori assured. “It’s all in your records, and you decided for yourself that you’d like it to be on the 24th. So, February 24th is now your birthday until the end of time... or until you decide otherwise, I guess.” Even though she let out a short chuckle, the troubled look didn’t leave Wesley’s face. He’d never had a birthday before. He didn’t know what it was supposed to be like, but he knew he didn’t want to spend it around a bunch of other humans.
“Wes,” Tori repeated, finally compelling his gaze to meet hers again. When their eyes locked, she gave him a warm, reassuring smile then held out the index finger of her free hand while she kept rubbing Wesley’s back with the other. Without hesitation, he rested his hands on her finger and let out a deep sigh. “If I can promise you that this date will be just you and me with nobody else around and that we’ll even be watching your favorite movie after dinner, would you go with me?” While Wesley would’ve expected Tori’s eyes to be silently begging him to agree, she just looked genuinely curious about his answer. He knew he didn’t have to say yes, but part of him did want the “birthday” experience if that’s what Tori was trying to give him. It might feel nice to just dress up for the first time in his life and get out of the house. It might even feel... human.
After going back and forth with his answer for a few more moments, Wesley finally let out another long sigh before giving Tori’s fingertip a squeeze of reassurance.
“Fine,” he huffed, trying to find his confidence. “I’ll go with you.”
“Are you sure?” Tori asked. If she felt any excitement at his answer, she didn’t show it. She was just as calm and collected as when she’d first asked him. Maybe she was worried that her reaction might sway his decision. Either way, Wesley still nodded and leaned back into the touch of her hand on his back for comfort.
“I’m sure,” he said. “As long as we can leave if I change my mind.”
“Of course,” Tori nodded with a bright smile. Her giddiness seemed to be leaking through now. “Just say the word and we’ll turn around and go home. No questions asked.”
“Alright. Just one more thing though.”
“What’s that?”
“I... don’t know how to tie this tie.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You look very handsome, babe,” Tori said as she started to tie the navy-blue tie around Wesley’s neck. It was the next day, his birthday, and he was a ball of nerves. He had no idea what to expect out of a birthday, and even though Tori had told him some of the basic things they’d be doing, she’d kept the details a secret to make things a little bit of a surprise. He didn’t know what restaurant they were going to, if they’d be going to a movie theater or going home afterwards to watch his favorite movie, or anything else that might happen for the rest of the night.
The main thing he was able to focus on to keep his mind from spiraling was how breathtaking Tori looked. She’d shrunk down to stand on the bed with him to help him tie his necktie, and her smaller stature gave him an even better look at her than when she was at her human size. While her fingers gently grazed his chest as she tied, Wesley couldn’t help but stare at her. Everywhere his eyes darted to, there was even more to drink in.
She was wearing a satin, navy-blue dress that matched his necktie, with spaghetti straps that laced up in the back and a v-neckline that left her showing a lot more skin than Wesley was used to seeing. The dress hugged her every curve until it reached the high slit at her right thigh, then it continued to flow down to the floor. She wore silver high heels that still only brought the top of her head up to Wesley’s nose when she was borrower-sized rather than only reaching his chin without the heels on. Since she was a bit taller and closer to his face now, he could see light smokiness around her eyes, with winged eyeliner on her top lid and a glossy, nude shade painted across her lips. Wesley found his eyes lingering on that slight shine on her lips for much longer than anything else he’d taken in from her appearance and, soon enough, he absentmindedly found himself leaning towards her, wanting to see what the shine tasted like.
Before he could find out, Wesley felt Tori’s finger press against his mouth while a mischievous look appeared on her face.
“Easy, tiger,” she chuckled before she went back to smoothing down his suit and tie. “Let me admire my work first.” She took a step back, much to Wesley’s disappointment, but the proud look in her eyes made him smile as he posed with his hands holding the collar of his suit jacket.
“How do I look?” he asked, making Tori let out another giggle.
“Like the most handsome man I’ve ever seen in my life,” she sighed contently before stepping toward him to close the gap between them again. “But that’s how you look every day.”
“Sure,” Wesley smirked. Before they could tease each other anymore, Tori tilted her chin up at him and placed a hand against the back of his neck. Immediately, their lips met, and Wesley could taste a slight sweetness from the gloss. Truth be told, he’d rather keep tasting that than go to dinner, but Tori pulled away again before he had the chance.
“Time to go,” she sang just as she started to grow back to her human size. Once she was bigger, she stood up from the bed and offered her palm to Wesley, which he climbed onto without hesitation. “You sure you’re okay with this, Wes?” she asked as she grabbed her small, black purse from the nightstand and started to walk out of the bedroom. “Remember, we can turn around anytime.”
“I’m good,” Wesley nodded, though he still had to try to convince himself that it was true. “I’ll let you know if I need to back out.”
“Okay,” Tori smiled. After a short trip down the stairs, she put her phone in her purse, called goodbye to Kipper, grabbed her keys, and then headed out of the house. Even the few steps it took to get to the car were enough to make the knot in Wesley’s stomach tighten. He was about to be surrounded by humans who would judge why a borrower was having dinner with a human. He would get laughed at for sure, if not thrown out altogether for such an absurd scene. Before his mind could race too much, he tried to focus on what Tori had said yesterday. She’d promised that there’d be nobody else around. Then again, what if that meant she’d just reserved some private area in the restaurant to keep them away from judging eyes. Wesley had never been to a restaurant before. He’d only ever seen them in movies from what glimpses he’d catch from a human’s TV and what movies Tori had watched with him, but even that showed him that you usually had to walk near other humans and talk to a human just to get a seat at a table. Surely, those humans would laugh.
No. He had to try and be positive. Tori had promised that it would just be the two of them. He was sure that she’d already have warned him about any human interactions they might have before they could be alone if there were going to be any. Maybe they were having a private dinner in the park, like he’d heard Adriana had set up for Jackie when she proposed. Maybe there was some kind of secret entrance to a restaurant that they could go through to avoid other people. He didn’t know. All of this was supposed to be a surprise, but the uncertainty was beginning to make him feel like he hated surprises.
The drive to wherever they’d be having dinner wasn’t very long, and Wesley couldn’t tell if that was a relief or if that made him feel even worse. He hadn’t dared to look out of the windows on either side of the car as he sat on Tori’s shoulder, mostly in fear that they’d pass by humans who would watch him as they got closer to their destination. Surprisingly, he didn’t hear any humans milling about outside the car when they parked, but before he could turn to look out the window, Tori brought up her hand to brush against his leg.
“Can you close your eyes?” she said, a smile in her voice.
“What?” Wesley gasped. “Why?”
“Because this is supposed to be at least a little bit of a surprise, silly.” With a nervous breath, Wesley slowly brought his hands up to his eyes and covered them.
“Okay,” he mumbled. “I’m r-ready.”
“It’s just you and me, Wes,” Tori said when she’d obviously heard the slight shake in his voice. “I promise. Nobody else is around.”
“I-I believe you,” he stammered. He knew that he did, but the images of so many gigantic, menacing humans staring at him while he had his eyes covered wouldn’t leave his mind. He was worried that he might start trembling but, suddenly, he felt the familiar warmth of Tori’s thumb rub against his legs.
“Don’t be scared,” she murmured. “I’ve got you.” Instead of replying, Wesley shifted to cover both eyes with one hand while he used the other hand to hold Tori’s thumb. Any contact he could get from her was more than welcome right now, and Tori took that as a sign to hurry up and unveil the surprise.
As smoothly as she could, she climbed out of the car, her thumb still holding on to Wesley, and she closed the driver’s side door behind her. The sound made Wesley jump a bit, but Tori kept walking up towards the big reveal. After Wesley heard the sound of a door being opened, Tori walked inside and shut the door back up, making sure it wasn’t too loud when it closed.
“Okay, Wes. You can open your eyes now.” With slight hesitation, Wesley did as she said and slowly dropped his hand away from his face. When he took in his surroundings, he let out a gasp and his eyes went wide. They were in the foyer of a house with modern furniture all around it, and a trail of rose petals was laid out from the front door to what looked like a dining room. All around them, fake, battery-powered candles were lit up to bathe the foyer and the dining room in a warm glow that was just bright enough to see with but just dark enough to feel intimate.
After a few seconds of soaking in the scene in front of him, Wesley’s surprised expression morphed into one of confusion as he realized that he recognized this house.
“Isn’t this Carter’s house?” he asked, making Tori nod.
“He’s out of town for the rest of the week,” she explained. “So, he asked me to house-sit for him. What better way to do that than to make a date out of it while he’s gone? I just have to make sure I clean all this up before he gets back...”
“This looks amazing, Tori,” Wesley said in awe as she started to follow the trail of rose petals to the dining room. When they reached the long, dining table, Wesley could see an even smaller table on top of it. The borrower-sized table sat near the edge of the human-sized one, along with two tiny seats and two sets of borrower-sized glasses and cutlery.
“Wow,” he gasped again as Tori carried him in her palm from her shoulder to the dining table’s surface. “You even brought all the stuff that’s just my size.”
“Of course, I did,” Tori chuckled. “I wouldn’t make you eat with your bare hands while sitting on the floor. I’m not a monster.”
“I know, I just...” Wesley let out a sigh of relief as he looked up at Tori with a grateful smile. “This is way more than I could’ve ever anticipated. Thank you, Tori.”
“You’re welcome, Wes,” she beamed back. “And happy birthday. Let me just get some stuff set up for our dinner and then I’ll be right back.”
“Okay,” he nodded as Tori left the room. He heard some shuffling around in the kitchen while he took his seat at the table. When she finally came back, Tori didn’t even say a word before she started to shrink and climb onto the dining table to join Wesley.
“Another nice surprise,” he beamed as he got up to hold out Tori’s chair for her. “I guess I just assumed you’d stay human sized and sit across from me that way. I like this a lot better though.”
“I didn’t want to feel like I was looming the whole time,” Tori explained, taking her seat before Wesley pushed in her chair and returned to his own. “Plus, I want to be closer to you. Being human-sized feels too far away sometimes.”
“I’m definitely not complaining,” Wesley laughed before reaching across the table to take Tori’s hand in his. “But I do feel the need to point out that you have lied to me.”
“About what?” Tori gasped, genuinely shocked.
“You’d said we’d be going out to a restaurant,” he replied with a smirk. “That’s what I was so nervous about all day. This is a lot more enjoyable.”
“That’s not true,” she said matter-of-factly. “I just said this would be a date, we’d have dinner, watch your favorite movie, and it would be just the two of us. I never mentioned a restaurant. I think you imagined that all on your own.”
Wesley opened his mouth to object, but then paused as he replayed their conversation from yesterday in his mind. After a few seconds, he realized that she was right. That’s all that she’d told him about the date. He must’ve just assumed this would be a restaurant setting based on what little he knew about dates from movies. It did make sense though that they’d be going somewhere else if Tori was able to promise him that nobody else would be around.
“Well... I guess I worked myself up for nothing,” he chuckled as his cheeks turned a shade of pink with embarrassment. “Sorry about that.”
“No need to apologize,” Tori reassured, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. “I probably should’ve at least said explicitly that we wouldn’t be going out in public or something. I was just worried about somehow ruining the surprise, so I didn’t want to give too much away.”
“I was pretty surprised,” Wesley smiled, making Tori’s grin grow wider. “You know I’m going to be trying my best to surprise you on your birthday now, you know.”
“Well, you have about three months to think about it, so hopefully that’ll give you enough time to plan something,” she giggled. “But you really don’t have to do anything for my birthday. I really like doing things for other people for their birthdays, but I don’t ever really feel like doing much for my own birthday. At most, I’ll invite Carter, Adri, and Jackie over to watch a movie or something, but I don’t ever ask for any gifts or have big parties or anything. I like to keep things pretty relaxed.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” he beamed back, just as Tori got a mischievous look in her eye.
“You know, now that I think about it, I guess I did technically lie about something,” she said, making Wesley’s eyebrow raise in curiosity.  Without any elaboration, she looked over his shoulder and let out a loud whistle. The sound was followed by some scrambling sounds in the kitchen, then Wesley heard a familiar clacking of nails against the floor. The clicking got louder and closer to them until Wesley turned around and saw Kipper poke his head into the room from the kitchen with a silver food tray held level in his mouth. The dog approached them carefully before setting the tray down behind Tori’s seat on the dining table. Now that the tray was closer, Wesley could see that there were two borrower-sized plates on it with silver domes covering them, along with a tiny pitcher containing a bubbly, pale liquid.
“When I went on a walk with Kipper earlier, I brought him over here,” Tori explained. “Luckily, you were getting ready when I came back, so you didn’t notice that he was gone. I guess, technically I lied when I said goodbye to Kip while we were leaving the house and I suppose I lied that it would be just the two of us. But he’s much more interested in getting back to his toys that I left in the living room, so he won’t be joining us for dinner the whole time.”
“Oh, the betrayal,” Wesley gasped as he dramatically slapped a hand against his chest.
“Sorry to wound you like this,” Tori chuckled as she got up and picked up the two plates from the tray. “Hopefully, some good food can make up for it.”
“I’m sure it can,” he laughed while Tori set one of the plates down in front of him. “Everything you make is delicious.” He watched as she walked back over to the tray and picked up the pitcher.
When she turned back around and approached the table again, she noticed a weary look in Wesley’s eye before she started pouring the liquid in the glass that was set in front of him. “Since neither of us drink,” she said once she’d set the full glass back down. “This is just some sparkling grape juice. Nothing alcoholic about it.” The information made Wesley let out a subtle sigh of relief while Tori filled her own glass and then put the pitcher on the table. When she sat back down, Wesley tentatively took a sip from his glass, letting the bubbly, sweet liquid coat his tongue. He let out a sound of pleasant surprise.
“That’s really good,” he smiled, putting his glass back down. Tori gave him a nod in return, a bright grin on her face.
“I’m glad you like it,” she said. “Now, how about we get into this dinner?” With an enthusiastic nod, Wesley mirrored her when she placed her hand on top of the dome over her plate, then lifted it to reveal the contents underneath. When Wesley lifted the plate’s cover, he was met with the warm, pleasant aroma of the familiar, saucy food in front of him. Immediately, his face lit up with delight when he looked back up at Tori.
“Lasagna,” he cheered. “My favorite!”
“Only favorites for your birthday,” she giggled back. “I’ve got some dessert made for us too, if you have any room for it after you finish that. If not, we can save it for tomorrow. And don’t worry, there’s plenty more lasagna if you want seconds... or any leftovers for the next few days.”
“This is the best,” Wesley beamed before taking her hand again from across the table. “You are the best. And this is the best birthday I’ve ever had.”
“Well, there’s not much to compare it to,” Tori shrugged with a smirk. “But I’ll still try to think of a way to outdo this next year to give you an even better birthday.”
“There’s no way you could outdo this,” he replied before rising from his seat and walking over to close the space between them. Immediately, when he saw her smile at him, he got down on his knees and wrapped his arms around her to pull her in for a tight hug with his head resting against her stomach. “I love all of this. I love this day.” He brought his head back up while keeping his arms wrapped around her, locking eyes with her with an adoring look on his face. “I love you,” he said. “So much. Thank you for everything.”
“I love you too, Wes,” Tori smiled then placed a gentle kiss against his lips. For a few moments, she wrapped her arms around him too, and they held each other until Wesley heard her let out a sigh of contentment. “Now, let’s not let this food get too cold. Plus, we still have a movie to watch in the living room when we’re done. There’s plenty of birthday activities to get through.”
“Just a little bit more,” Wesley said as he buried his face in the skin of her shoulder and gave her a gently squeeze. “Right now, this is all I want for my birthday.”
There are three things about Wesley that are especially perplexing. First, despite his insistence that he spoke ‘plain truth for plain people’, a rather astonishing number of interpreters have insisted that Wesley’s words should not be taken at face value. There is even a tendency to see Wesley as the kind of person who said one thing and did another. For example, despite the fact that Wesley insisted that he was a ‘Church of England man’, that he would ‘live and die’ in the established Church, and that he would not leave the Church of England until his soul left his body, a wide array of scholars have argued that his actions undermined his words. Similarly, despite the fact that, in the late stages of a rather long life, Wesley declared that he was a High Church Tory and a subscriber to the Tory political doctrines of divine right and passive obedience, many scholars insist that this is, at best, only half the story. On the basis of Wesley’s political writings, they insist that he was really a proto-liberal democrat.
The second thing that is perplexing about Wesley is the extent to which scholars disagree about Wesley’s relationship to the age in which he lived. Thus, across the years, one group of scholars has read Wesley as a reactionary figure who was determined to turn back the clock to an age in which the majority of people still believed in miracles, demonic possession and divine intervention. A more recent group of scholars read Wesley as a progressive figure who was out ahead of the curve in adapting Christianity to the early modern world. As we will see, what these two ways of reading Wesley have in common is an interpretation of the age in which Wesley lived. Both groups regard eighteenth-century English church and society as increasingly secular.
The third thing that is perplexing about Wesley is the extent to which scholars struggle to discern a unity between Wesley’s theological commitments on the one hand, and his ecclesiastical and political commitments on the other. For example, scholars who see in Wesley’s political commitments a strong democratic impulse are often at a loss when they are asked to explain the fact that Wesley ran the Methodist societies in an overtly hierarchical fashion. Indeed, very late in his life, Wesley went so far as to say of the Methodists, ‘We are no republicans, and never intend to be.’3 Similarly, scholars who regard Wesley as politically committed to the monarchy – and therefore to hierarchy – often suggest that this was inconsistent with his theological commitment to a doctrine of unlimited atonement. Few, if any, scholars to date have provided an account of Wesley’s life and thought in which there is a recognizable unity or coherence between his ecclesiastical, political and theological commitments.
