December 18 ‘10 DADT is repealed

They fly up to Vermont to get married in a courthouse and then “honeymoon” in NY December 21 ‘11 after taking time off for Christmas. Javy and Nat attend as their best man/woman and witnesses

The four get stationed on the USS. George Washington where the “rivalry” between Jake and Bradley is established from their banter over comms and on the carrier. They spend 18 months there before they’re all split up. (‘11-‘12)

Over the next 8 years the four are moved around occasionally stationed with each other. Jake and Bradley have a house together in Cali (Bradley’s parents house) for any free time they have.

From ‘20 onward Jake is flying with the Vigilantes out of Lemoore and Bradley is on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt flying with the Golden Warriors.

USAF Special Operations Command lands the CV-22 Osprey fleet due to transmission system problems

The U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) landed its fleet of 52 CV-22 Osprey tiltrotors indefinitely due to the recent series of incidents involving the aircraft.

The service will use the stop in operations to examine the issue of the hard clutch coupling in the aircraft's transmission system, which is skating for a reason yet to be determined.

"At this time, there have been no injuries or deaths, largely due to the skill and professionalism of our Air Commands that operate the CV-22," said Lieutenant Colonel Rebecca Heyse, director of the U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command. "The safety of our aviators is extremely important, so no CV-22 of the AFSOC will fly until we determine the cause of the hard clutch couplings and risk control measures are implemented."

"Since 2017, there have been four incidents involving the activation of the hard clutch during the flight, with two occurring in the last six weeks," Heyse added.

These two accidents resulted in the death of nine U.S. Marines. The first accident occurred in March, when a U.S. Marine Corps Osprey crashed near Bodo, Norway, during the Cold Response exercise. The second occurred in June, with five marines losing their lives when the aircraft crashed near Glamis, California.

After the accident in California, the Navy ordered a "security break" to review risk management practices and conduct training on threat and error management processes.

The U.S. Navy will continue to fly its CMV-22 Osprey (which is serving as the new delivery system on board Navy aircraft carriers (COD)), but the service said it is “aware of the problems affecting the U.S. Air Force's CV-22 fleet and is closely monitoring our CMV-22 aircraft for similar occurrences.”

The news of the problems in the transmission system in the Osprey fleet came after a problem with the ejector seat forced the U.S. Air Force to land its fleet of F-35A aircraft. The same problem affected some F-35C variants of the U.S. Navy, as well as the F/A-18B/C/D Hornet and F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fighters, E/A-18G Growlers and T-45 Goshawk and F-5 Tiger II trainers.

I need you all to know that even with the tests you have to wait 3-7 days for results on, there are still false negatives (this is the case with any nasal or throat swab test, unfortunately; I've had strep about fiftyleven times as a kid, including a progression to scarlet fever once, and unless the people on both ends of that swab know what they're doing, a throat full of germs can still turn up negative on a fluke, from not swabbing thoroughly, from the patient gagging, etc).

and particularly with the saliva based tests & the quick tests, you can absolutely get a false negative & then in 72 hours find out your "real" test was positive.

on top of that, tests for active disease are not necessarily going to give consistent results for people who are sick but presymptomatic, asymptomatic carriers, or people who have already begun to recover but may still be shedding live virus— and as of yet, we do not know how consistently people who recover develop antibodies, what that means for contagion, and whether or not COVID survivors can be reinfected... or if it may even be a virus that lies dormant in recovered patients' bodies forever & can flare back up again like chicken pox & shingles (beyond the other unknowns of long term effects on the body, immune system, etc.).

obviously, fuck the RNC, and fuck duval county leadership for signing up to host them, and fuck the ways this specifically will help ensure florida's too little too late mask & safety legislation will move backwards.

but this is a scary time to let yourself buy into false trust in tests & failsafes. you cannot let your guard down even for a minute, even over these tests, because the information truly is not there— and the road to hell, for everyone, is paved with the seduction of & the false sense of peace that comes with the illusion of control— of any of us, as individuals or institutions or "authorities," being in control.

I’m a fan of this nonconference matchup, mostly because I can’t place either of these teams just yet. TCU has only played one game against an FCS opponent which doesn’t tell us a thing. Purdue has lost to Nevada but beat Vanderbilt pretty handily, so I really can’t say I’ve made up my mind about the Boilermakers except maybe Vanderbilt is worse than I thought.

9. Kansas State 2-0 (0-0) at Mississippi State 2-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/14)

Neither team has played much competition so far, so this game could end up telling us a lot about each squad. Both are hoping to crash their respective conference races and could use some momentum going into league play.

This one felt a lot more interesting before last week before Syracuse got blown up by Maryland. Clemson should probably knock over the Orange with little effort, but that’s what we all thought the last time the Tigers went to the Carrier Dome, and we all remember what happened then.

How can you not be fascinated by this game? North Carolina has turned from out and out loser to serious ACC Coastal contender in two weeks. Mack Brown has somehow resuscitated the Tar Heels in just two short weeks. Meanwhile, Wake Forest keeps plowing along, punching well above their weight in the past few years and looking to further improve up the Atlantic hierarchy despite massive institutional disadvantages. These long time, in-state rivals wanted to play each other so badly that they scheduled a non-conference series against each other to take the field this Friday night. That’s right, this isn’t even an ACC game and doesn’t count in the league standings. My god, this is just wild that we’re seeing this.

3. Arizona State 2-0 (0-0) at #18 Michigan State 2-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/14)

This part of the season is so fun because narratives about each team are just starting to crop up. Not for Arizona State though. The Sun Devils are the only team in the PAC-12 South to have absolutely no buzz around them positive or negative. So we’ll learn a lot from them this week. Michigan State, meanwhile, needs a good challenge to see if the Spartans are the real deal or not. Against Tulsa they looked moribund, against WMU Sparty looked kind of scary on offense. Imagine if MSU had an offense, just the thought sends a chill down my spine.

2. #20 Washington State 2-0 (0-0) vs Houston 1-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/14)

Boy, the PAC-12 could actually sink lower if they lose this one. They really shouldn’t if they want any part in the national conversation. This one is being played at NRG, allegedly a neutral site, but I don’t think anybody is buying that one. Oh yeah, it’s the Cougar Bowl. That’s kind cool.

As the prophesy foretold, one day, the Iowa-Iowa State would grab the nation’s attention. God I’m so mad that the AP took the Cyclones out of the top 25, even if it was warranted by almost losing to Northern Iowa. This could have been a top 25 matchup! That would’ve been so cool given that this game is usually either ignored or laughed at. Oh well, you’re missing out if you don’t watch this one. Iowa is one of the two serious players in the Big Ten West race and ISU has been among the three best teams in the Big 12 the past two years.

5. Miami OH 1-1 (0-0) at Cincinnati 1-1 (0-0) (Saturday 9/14)

I’m a sucker for longstanding rivalry games, which explains why this matchup is in the top 5 and not something like Air Force at Colorado. I remain unrepentant. The Victory Bell is one of the G5′s best (and only) non-conference trophy games and it’s fantastic that these two still play every year. Also Cincinnati could use a tune-up after getting thrashed by Ohio State.

4. Southern Miss 1-1 (0-0) at Troy 1-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/14)

I really like this regional non-conference matchup. Southern Miss and Troy are both hoping to win their respective conferences and a victory here would help out a great deal despite not counting in the official standings.

3. Hawaii 2-0 (0-0) at #23 Washington 1-1 (0-1) (Saturday 9/14)

I think Washington is going to use this game to remind people why they’ve won the PAC-12 twice in the last two years, but Hawaii has won two games already against PAC-12 opponents. We can dream.

2. Stanford 1-1 (0-1) at #17 UCF 2-0 (0-0) (Saturday 9/14)

UCF might have another big season here. The Knights are getting to play two P5 teams in a row and should be the favorites both times. Stanford started strong but ended up getting hammered by USC last week. KJ Costello should be back as QB but the Cardinal’s issues on offense and defense probably won’t get covered up fully against an experienced team like Central Florida.

I didn’t include the FCS vs P5 games this week, mostly because the FCS teams are all severely overmatched by P5 opponents. I mean, I think it’d be cool if they won, but it’s not very likely.

The Mid-America classic is one of the FCS’s most played rivalries outside of the Ivy League. Illinois State is probably Playoff bound, but the Redbirds have to win on the road against the rebuilding Panthers.

general life updates #2

New Years Eve and day we had to leave off kitten searching, everything was closed or closing early. We decided to go to the City of Jacksonville’s animal control shelter (CoJ), on thr 2nd after he got off work. The day we went with sis they’d had a huge adoption event we didn’t know about. There were slim pickings when we got there. I was hoping they’d had enough time to bring in more stock from foster homes. 

Ima tell ya’ll the story of how Caity picked us because it’s just so cute. When you walk into CoJ you see the cat kennels right away. Caity and her brother were on the endcap facing the door. As soon as we turned the corner coming in she started screaming and I do mean S C R E A M I N G. Just her. Not both of them, just. Her. But they had them both on quarantine and did not even want you petting them. So I was like “ok. I will look around.”, which I did. With Caity screaming the entire time. I didn’t see anything that interested me so I came back around to stand in front of her and her brother. 

Once she realized she had my full attention she stopped screaming and just started meowing really loudly flopping herself against the bars trying to get me to touch her. I’m not allowed to touch her, but I can see she’s tiny, adorable, and desperate for pets. So i asked the people if I could hold her. I had to put on a cover gown and gloves. During this they tell me she was third party exposed to what they called “Panluc”, but it was a beyond slim chance she had it. They did a very poor job of telling me what Panluc was, just that it was a feline only virus, and that the symptoms are bloody diarrhea and vomiting. So they get her out, hand her over to me, and as soon as I get her in my arms, she shuts up, settles in, and starts purring. 

While I was holding her, her brother knocked over his food bowl. It was a metal bowl, and the kennels are metal so it made a huge noise. It terrified him, along with every other cat in the vicinity. But all Caity did was twitch an ear and look in the general direction. That was what really caught my attention. Our other cat, Gracie, is the most skittish cat I’ve ever seen in my life. She is on edge all of the time. I would prefer a more chill cat. 

So anyway, I held her for as long as the volunteer would let me; a couple minutes tops, before I could tell the volunteer was itching to get away. So I handed her back. As soon as the door was closed behind her, she started screaming again. I had been dithering over taking her or not, but that sealed it. She wanted to go home with me. So I filled out the application, let them do their end on the computer, and the entire time Caity’s right behind us screaming. When everything was signed they again pulled her out and put her in the carrier. She immediately shut up, and settled in. She didn’t make a peep the entire ride home. She had picked her humans and she was pleased. 

Side note: they emailed me her medical history, what they were calling “Panluc” was really Panleukopenia which is a Parvo-like virus that only felines can get. I had to Google that. She’d had third party exposure at the end of November. Since then, but before we got her she’d had two shots to medicate for it, and one to vaccinate for it. Why she was still being quarantined for it when we got her, I don’t know. She’s never exhibited any of the symptoms. She’s fine. I took her into the vet yesterday for her boosters and the vet agreed; she’s fine.

My birthday was also quiet. It was on Saturday this year so I took the day to just go off by myself and browse some shops. Poked around an antique store I like, and a couple of thrift stores. Found some good deals on junk journal supplies, and a couple of romance books that looked good. 

I came home to lilies on the entry way table, a couple of cards, and an ice cream cake. He also bought me a Disney desk calendar and the Spyro remastered trilogy for the PS4. All wonderful surprises to come home to. 

Sunday hubs had made plans to take me out to a really nice restaurant. He’d asked my aunt that lives in town if she’d watch Liam for a couple hours. She’s been offering casually here and there for about a year now that if we ever need a sitter, she’d be glad to. 

It didn’t work out. Liam had a melt down about being left over there so we adjusted plans. Went grocery shopping, and out to dinner at a seafood place we love. He was not easy to deal with that day and it was stressful, but oh well. Just part of being his mom.

The past couple of weeks have been ... I dunno.. some days seem like they’re endlessly busy, and some seem quiet. Stretching from the week before Thanksgiving through to New Years - that’s my busiest time of year and it takes a lot out of me. The past two weeks have been up and down. Some days I’m exhausted, and some days I want to do all the things. .... most days are exhaustion tbh.
