Arthritis
Arthritis is a common condition that causes pain and inflammation in a joint. In the UK millions of people have arthritis or similar conditions that affect their joints. It can affect people of all ages.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis in the UK. It is a long-term condition and it often develops in people in their mid 40s or older. It is more common in women and people who have a family history of the condition. It initially affects the smooth cartilage lining of the joint and makes movement more difficult than usual, leading to pain and stiffness. when the cartilage lining starts to roughen and thin out, the tendons and ligaments have to compensate and work harder. As a result it can cause swelling and formation of bony spurs called 'osteophytes'.
The most common affected joints are:
hands
spine
knees
hips
Causes:
joint injury - overusing your joint
other existing conditions - e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, gout
age and family history
obesity - excess strain on your joints, especially knees/hips
being a woman - more common than men
Treatment:
regular exercise
losing weight if overweight
suitable footwear
painkillers
structured exercise plan/physiotherapy
surgery
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis is less common than osteoarthritis. It often starts when the person is between 30 and 50 years old and women are more likely to be affected than men. In this form of arthritis, the body's immune system targets affected joints which leads to pain and swelling. It is long-term condition that usually affects the hands, feet and wrists.
There may be periods of time where symptoms become worse, known as flare-ups. A flare up can be difficult to predict and some people also experience problems in other parts of the body or general symptoms such as tiredness and weight loss.
Symptoms:
joint pain - throbbing and aching pain
stiffness - e.g. not being able to fully bend fingers or form a fist
swelling, warmth and redness - joints can become inflamed
tiredness/fatigue
high temperature
poor appetite
weight loss
dry eyes
chest pain - if the heart/lungs are affected
Treatment
DMARD tablets - disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, ease symptoms and slow down the progression
range of medications, steroids, painkillers etc.
NSAID tablets - non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, help relieve pain whilst reducing inflammation
physiotherapy - improve fitness and muscle strength, encouraging more flexibility of joints
transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) - small pulse of electricity to affected joint, numbs nerve endings and help ease pain
occupational therapy
podiatry
surgery - carpel tunnel release, arthroscopy, joint replacement
Having Rheumatoid Arthritis can lead to additional symptoms and conditions which may be life threatening. Complications include:
carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) - pressure on a nerve in your wrist that causes tingling, numbing and pain in hands/fingers.
inflammation of other areas of the body - lungs, heart/eyes)
increased risk of heart attack and stroke
Other types of Arthritis and related conditions:
Ankylosing spondylitis - long-term inflammatory condition affecting bones, muscles and ligaments of the spine
Cervical spondylosis - AKA degenerative osteoarthritis, affects joints and bones in the neck
Gout - caused by too much uric acid in the body, causes intense pain, redness and swelling
Enteropathic arthritis - chronic inflammatory arthritis associated with IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), most commonly affecting lower limb joints and spine
Secondary arthritis - develops after a joint injury
Reactive arthritis - causes pain and swelling of joints, sore eyes and extreme tiredness, develops after infection of the gut, bowel/throat
Polymyalgia reumatica - affects people over age of 50, where immune system causes muscle pain and stiffness, usually across shoulders/tops of legs

The Cutting-Edge Approach: Understanding Wrist Arthroscopy
As technology advances, so does the accessibility of medical interventions. One such innovation in the field of orthopedics is wrist arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical technique that has revolutionized the diagnosis and treatment of various wrist conditions. In this blog post, we will delve into the world of wrist arthroscopy, exploring its benefits, procedures, and the conditions it can effectively address.
Understanding Wrist Arthroscopy
Wrist arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that allows a physician to visualize, diagnose, and treat conditions affecting the wrist joint using a small, slender instrument called an arthroscope. This tool has a tiny camera attached to it, enabling the surgeon to view the inside of the wrist joint on a video monitor.
Unlike traditional open surgery, which involves larger incisions and longer recovery times, wrist arthroscopy offers a minimally invasive alternative. By using small portals or incisions (about the size of a buttonhole), surgeons can insert the arthroscope and other specialized surgical instruments, making precise repairs without the need for extensive tissue disruption.
Benefits of Wrist Arthroscopy
1. Minimally Invasive: The small portals used in wrist arthroscopy reduce the risk of infection, minimize blood loss, and accelerate recovery time compared to open surgery.
2. Accurate Diagnosis: Wrist arthroscopy provides doctors with a clear and detailed view of the wrist joint, enabling accurate diagnosis of various wrist conditions.
3. Targeted Treatment: The arthroscope allows surgeons to directly visualize the problem areas and perform precise, targeted treatments such as removing loose bodies, repairing damaged tissues, and addressing ligament injuries.
Conditions Treated by Wrist Arthroscopy
1. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: Wrist arthroscopy can be used to release the transverse carpal ligament, relieving pressure on the median nerve and alleviating carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms.
2. Wrist Fractures: By utilizing wrist arthroscopy, surgeons can effectively treat certain wrist fractures, avoiding the need for open surgery.
3. Wrist Ligament Tears: Arthroscopy allows accurate assessment and repair of damaged wrist ligaments, including those affected by conditions such as scapholunate ligament tears and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) injuries.
4. Ganglion Cysts: Wrist arthroscopy can be utilized to remove ganglion cysts, which are benign fluid-filled lumps that commonly appear on the wrist.
In conclusion, wrist arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that offers several benefits for the diagnosis and treatment of wrist conditions. It allows for a clear visualization of the joints and surrounding structures, facilitating accurate diagnoses and targeted treatments. With the use of small incisions and specialized instruments, this procedure can be performed with less pain, minimal scarring, and faster recovery times compared to traditional open surgery. Wrist arthroscopy has proven effective in treating a range of conditions including cartilage injuries, ligament tears, ganglion cysts, and wrist fractures. Additionally, it has been found to be particularly beneficial for athletes and individuals with chronic wrist pain. Overall, wrist arthroscopy has revolutionized the field of wrist surgery and continues to offer a safe and effective option for patients seeking relief from wrist conditions.

Effective Treatment Options for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment in Stanmore (CTS) is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, becomes compressed or irritated as it passes through the carpal tunnel—a narrow passageway in the wrist. This compression can lead to a range of symptoms, including numbness, tingling, weakness, and pain in the hand and wrist. Fortunately, there are various treatment options available to alleviate the discomfort and improve the quality of life for those affected by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Understanding Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Before delving into the treatment options, it's important to understand the causes and risk factors associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery in Stanmore. This condition can arise due to a combination of factors, including:
Anatomy: Individuals with a narrower carpal tunnel naturally have less space for the median nerve, making them more susceptible to compression.
Repetitive Movements: Jobs or activities that involve repetitive wrist movements, such as typing, assembly line work, or playing musical instruments, can contribute to the development of CTS.
Medical Conditions: Conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, and obesity can increase the risk of CTS.
Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy can lead to fluid retention, which may affect the tissues within the carpal tunnel.
Treatment Options
The treatment approach for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can vary based on the severity of symptoms, the underlying causes, and individual preferences. Here are some effective treatment options:
1. Conservative Treatments:
For individuals with mild to moderate symptoms, non-invasive approaches can often provide relief:
Wrist Splints: Wearing a wrist splint at night helps keep the wrist in a neutral position, reducing pressure on the median nerve.
Activity Modification: Making adjustments to daily activities to reduce repetitive movements and excessive wrist strain can be beneficial.
Ergonomic Changes: Proper ergonomics in the workplace, such as using an ergonomic keyboard and mouse, can help prevent exacerbation of symptoms.
2. Medications:
Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): These over-the-counter medications can help manage pain and inflammation associated with CTS.
Corticosteroids: Oral or injectable corticosteroids can provide temporary relief by reducing inflammation around the median nerve.
3. Physical Therapy:
Physical therapy can help improve wrist flexibility, strengthen the muscles around the wrist, and provide techniques for managing symptoms. Therapists may also use techniques like ultrasound therapy to reduce inflammation.
4. Surgical Options:
When conservative measures don't provide sufficient relief or when the condition is severe, surgery may be considered. The goal of surgery is to relieve pressure on the median nerve by cutting the ligament that forms the top of the carpal tunnel. Surgical options include:
Open Carpal Tunnel Release: A traditional procedure where a small incision is made in the palm to access the carpal tunnel.
Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release: A minimally invasive procedure where a tiny camera and instruments are inserted through small incisions to perform the release.
5. Alternative Therapies:
Certain alternative therapies, such as acupuncture, yoga, and chiropractic care, have shown promise in providing relief for some individuals. However, more research is needed to establish their effectiveness definitively.
Choosing the Right Treatment
The most appropriate treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Clinic in Stanmore depends on individual circumstances. Consulting a healthcare professional, preferably a specialist, is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan. Early intervention and proper management can help prevent the condition from worsening and improve the overall quality of life for those affected by CTS.
In conclusion, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgeon in Stanmore is a common condition that can cause significant discomfort and interference with daily activities. Fortunately, a range of effective treatment options are available, from conservative measures to surgical interventions. By working closely with healthcare providers and making necessary lifestyle adjustments, individuals with CTS can find relief and regain optimal hand and wrist function.

Could I ask for a Secco and Cioccolata x reader comfort thingy ?
Sure thing! I think we can all use a little comfort in these trying times. Also God bless the insanity of a doctor that would cut first and ask questions later. I am yet again touched by the confidence of AO3 authors of my “good health” in any Dr. Discount Jared Leto fic, because my health is fucked to shit lads.
Tumblr media
Secco x Reader x Cioccolata
There were many days he considered himself lucky.
When have you ever asked to be let out? Never. To most a two hundred forty four meter flat is a prison, many unable to see passed the four walls of their room or the nicknacks Cioccolata often decorated with just to gauge a reaction.
Cioccolata could trust you with his life, and you wouldn’t disappoint.
It was quite a surprise when he entered on one of his unscheduled visits to find you curled up on the shag rug in the kitchen. Your eyes were closed, sewn shut, but the way you held yourself was telling.
“Ah! What’s wrong baby?!”
Secco skittered like a hyperactive dog towards you, Oasis scraping against the concrete as he called your name, a bit of a slur in his voice. As he approached he began to shake your shoulders, his grunting laughter a sign he thought your act was just a game. A long tongue lathed up your neck, across your lips, into your ear. Nothing. No reaction whatsoever. You never laid down on the shag rugs like a fetus. You were always doing something in your little nest. Either rearranging chairs by touch or listening to your audiobooks on tape, even tuning into the radio if you were really bored.
You never just laid there like a slug.
“Heyyyy... Why don’t you answer me?!” Secco moaned.
Still ever obedient yet frozen in place, you rolled over onto your back with your stomach exposed, a display of reception, but your face was contorted in what seemed to be sorrow.
“... wake uuuuup!” Secco whined your name. “Play with me!”
Strange... Not a single reaction. Normally you loved when Secco came to see you. He loved you for what you were: a new plaything for him. Where as Cioccolata showed a deep regard for you in free surgical procedures and accessible electronics, Secco was different. He gave love. At first he’d been unsure of the petting and the holding (you only knew him when you were blind, any who saw him always screamed), but his selfishness for sweet things that evolved into kisses and romance broke the barrier of uncertainty. When you gave a little sugar, he only wanted more.
“Why. Are. You. Sleeping??” Secco demanded.
“Honey?” Cioccolata tried, “Why won’t you talk to me? I am addressing the living.”
Nothing. The news was playing on the radio. As it usually did nowadays with all that had been happening in the world. Maybe it was something you heard? Currently there was a bulletin about the weather: light showers scattered around the metro area and four traffic accidents. Nothing out of the ordinary that would explain your tantrum, and Cioccolata was about to reprimand you when he heard it:
The search continued for a person of your height, your age, your description, your name. Officials released new information from phone calls that might be a possible lead on your whereabouts. Your family had managed to keep your name in the media for a year, demoted from television to radio, but they were convinced you were still alive. If anyone had any information for the police, a hotline number was provided. Operators were standing by.
The announcement went as quickly as it came.
Wow... Had it really been a year already?
“Do you want to go home then?” Cioccolata asked. A certain sternness in his voice.
You shook your head. Knowing fully well the only way he’d let you return home was in separate FedEx containers. You’d seen it before you’d been blinded. Part of your conditioning. Could he call it that if you’d been willing to stay before? He still wasn’t sure.
“Don’t make me go back...” you whispered.
Secco was deathly quiet. No doubt in anyone’s mind that he could understand what was going on. He acted first, climbing on top of you and curling into a full bodied embrace like a pillbug. His answer was clear at least. He didn’t want to let you leave or continue to suffer in this way. The soft chuff sounds he made, a combination of throaty huff and pushing air passed his lips, were his unique way of comfort. It took quite a while, probably the longest time it had ever taken for you to respond positively to Secco’s affection. But the minute it worked, with your hesitant hands wrapping around his skinny back with the bones peeking through his Stand, Cioccolata rushed forward to join in with his own rough love.
“Good good...” he crooned, nuzzling your neck as you nuzzled Secco.
With you he found a treasure. There were some minor health hiccups that you had, a combination of crippling poverty, minimum wage job, and no health insurance would do that to a youngster, yet it made him all the more excited to take care of every single problem that cropped up. Your eyesight went fast and he gleefully made the executive decision to blind you completely. You had cramping that had the capacity to make you collapse onto the cold concrete flooring, so he took out the offending parts that pained you every month. The complaint of your fingers and palms giving you pain opened up another possibility of exploratory surgery, and Cioccolata finally was able to perform a joint replacement after it came about you didn't have carpal tunnel, even more fun than that: you were prematurely arthritic!
Those who wanted perfection and normalcy in a relationship were cowards he decided finally. One does get a little bored after all when you’re a god among men. For a hot minute he wanted a little bit of a challenge. To see how long it took someone stronger than him to see where he was coming from. There were many others before you that were not as fortunate. The ones who were whole, considered normal, all they put up was resistance. Those with problems so numerous they turned to maladaptive coping mechanisms to lessen their mental burden? Score. Not exactly his modus operandi to fix things that actually were broken, but then again you weren’t his typical choice in pet.
Thank God for that whim he took you on. He could leave the “front door” to the basement converted flat wide open and you’d shrink away to your bedroom and close the door, locking it deftly and hiding in the security of your blankets. Any time you had an ache or a pain, you entertained his compulsive need to carve you like a Halloween Pumpkin to find the problem, a living breathing practice cadaver on command. If he decided that you didn’t need clothes, you were content to exist in a pair of Secco’s briefs and one of Cioccolata’s old scrub tops (and of course he couldn’t deny how delicious that made you look). He could push you out of the base entirely and you’d break your way back in purely by touch memory. If Secco left the door ajar you ran to it because you could hear the sounds of the outside, but they learned not to chase you anymore. Because you never tried to leave, you ran to the door only to slam it shut and lock both the deadbolt and knob, even employing the chain locks and the padlock for good measure.
“You don’t need them anymore...” crooned the Doctor in your ear. “You don’t need anyone else but us... We’re strong, strong enough to protect you. So long as you’re with us you will want for nothing.”
