"I will stab you. Fuck off."
The alien wisely fucked off. My first time ever on a ship and aliens already assuming that humans are all the same. An adage of crew, Christ is is gonna be a long two years.
"... The new humans are different."
"Eh? Oh. Yeah. Ellie's a bit. It takes a while before she's. Y'know. Plus she uh. Lost a few people recently so she's been a little."
"bit of a bitch."
"I was gonna say prickly, but that works too."
It took a week before it wore off. Dan and Sarah both managing to not freak out the rest of the crew when I say on top of the ship. Not wearing a space suit.
"WHY IS SHE UP THERE?"
"Oh. Right. Um."
"HOW DID SHE GET THERE??"
"See, the uh. Funny thing-"
"... Where's her space suit?"
A tall ass lanky mother fucker tapped my shoulder, small jelly fish glowing animals floating around me as he sat beside me.
"Y'know, I've seen a lot of things in my life."
"Hm?"
"But humans are the strangest thing-"
"Drop the pretentious shit."
"Pardon?"
"has anyone every told you you sound like an old man?"
"I- I do??"
"Seen a lot of things in my life. Sounds like my fucking old ass friends. How old are you?"
"489 earth years."
"You species. How old are ya?"
"24"
"Sorry, I didn't hear that."
"gargoborble"
"English."
"...24."
"24 and you talk with the same pretentious fuckery as a 120 year old who wants to fuck with the youth. I'm fucking 34 and I have less obviousness than you."
She flicked the keys to the ship between her hands. The jelly fish like animals floating away as they lost interest in her.
" Oh right. How are you-"
"Magic."
"magic?"
"Y'know what mana is?"
"..."
"Basic idea. Everything connected, even void. Matter. Energy. Whatever you call it's the thing that connects all shit is called mana. Magic is wielding that mana to do shit. Augment strength, harden skin, shields. Protection. Blah blah blah. Long story..."
She trailed off, looking over at the asteroid field as it passed.
"did you see that?"
"... What?"
"thought I saw a ship."
"Out here?"
"Hmmm. Yeah I'm gonna go inside."
She walked past the captain, walking along the steel as her feet glowed. Placing hand on the controller, it glowing with blue light before the door opened. Without the key into the ship.
"You coming?"
A crowd of aliens rushed forward, asking questions and increasing my headache. I grumbled, before pushing mana out. Same motion as moving your arms out to push people away, a circle formed around me as the captain walked in.
Ignoring the increased questions, as aliens stood in shock. I then lifted the crew up.
"Someone go check the monitors before I lose my patience. Saw something out there. I can explain how I'm doing this when we're not-"
The ship's gravity suddenly shifted, people falling backwards as I held my ground. Something clamped onto the back end of the ship, magnets of some sort near the botanical ball.
"EIGHTY-"
"Nine pirates. I know. DAN. SWORDS!"
He tossed me my swords.
"Ok. So captain. I can either go kill them all, or I can let you do whatever you think we should do."
Tall, lanky grey ish purple and with a purple supernova in his eyes, he thought carefully. Dan already had herded the crew back, Sarah no doubt already had stolen a gun and was hiding in ambush somewhere.
The man shrugged. Turning to the panicking crew. So not no. Not yes. And I had no idea what U was gonna fight so...
I charged down the hall, sword in hand as I slid my way down halls. Technically I had some idea, but the ship was kinda big. Like a container ship big, the lower deck had a lot of crates and shit, only way in is the hangar which is locked and stuff and you can't cut that open or something.
I soon bumped into my first group of pirates. Chicken men, scars lining body. Hmm. Kinda like that Ben ten race-
The human ducked under the flames, blade catching the heat as she swung the weapon forward. My brother caught the blade, before he was thrown into me.
Momentum, basic idea is I just swirl around and I can redirect inertia towards an object, using this, I can turn a kick into a swivel and a stumble into a toss.
Ice forced the two against the wall, unable to move their legs what heat they produced barely even melted the pair. Sword in hand, the woman. Raced down the hall.
"ATTACK!!" The buffalo like alien had time to turn, drop the captive as then get a sword stuck in his chest.
The human rose up, the big guy's back turning to face them as she threw the body over herself, sword embedded in his chest throwing the line of pirates into the shit as she drew a second blade.
Plasma blades were drawn, the insect like thing swinging the glaive quickly as he scraped the floor, long sword twirling, catching the sword, I kicked the insects leg out. Pulling a striking claw away, before slicing the insect with its own glaive stabbing it into the ground as it tried to regenerate or something.
The human began using the glaive with panicked ease, parry and slicing legs, U til.it was taken off her in which she headbutted the alien hard enough it staggered. Growling, claws grew from her hands. Her body glowing as she dropped to her fours and charged into the ship.
She drove the ship into the hanger, claw marks covering the pirates' crew, tied up in the smaller more mobile ship.
The crew stared at the woman, then the tied up crew.
"Getting the feeling, some of y'all have never seen a human special forces person before." She stated, pulling the sword out the quarsian's chest, flame cauterizing the wound.

Its sensitive nasal tentacles are covered in thousands of tiny touch receptors, allowing it to navigate in the dark and locate prey beneath the soil. But what truly baffles scientists is its underwater hunting prowess, using these unique adaptations to sense and catch prey in a flash. 3. The Pink Fairy Armadillo: A Tiny Desert Digger
The Pink Fairy Armadillo From the deserts of Argentina emerges the pink fairy armadillo, a creature as adorable as it is bizarre. Its pale pink armor and small size make it look more like a fairy tale character than a real animal. This tiny armadillo possesses an uncanny ability to dig through sand with remarkable efficiency, disappearing into the ground as if by magic. Its specialized adaptations to the desert environment reflect the wonders of evolution in even the most challenging habitats. 4. The Yeti Crab: Deep-Sea Oddity with Furry Arms
The Yeti Crab Journeying to the depths of the ocean, we encounter the yeti crab, an otherworldly crustacean found near hydrothermal vents. Named after the mythical Yeti due to its furry appearance, this crab's arms are covered in hair-like structures that host symbiotic bacteria. These bacteria are believed to play a vital role in the crab's nutrition by converting chemicals from the vents into usable energy. The yeti crab's unique adaptation to its extreme habitat highlights the diversity of life thriving in the darkness of the deep sea. 5. The Saiga Antelope: Ancient Nosed Wanderer
The Saiga Antelope Hailing from the vast grasslands of Central Asia, the saiga antelope roams with an unmistakable feature: an elongated, trunk-like nose. This nose, which resembles an ancient relic from another era, is thought to aid in filtering dust and cooling in the scorching summers. Unfortunately, this charismatic creature faces challenges due to habitat loss and poaching for its valuable horns. The saiga antelope's distinctive appearance and plight underscore the delicate balance between human impact and wildlife conservation. 6. The Shoebill: The Prehistoric Bird of the Swamps
The Shoebill Africa's swamps harbor a creature that seems to have stepped out of a prehistoric landscapeâthe shoebill. With its massive, shoe-shaped bill, this bird commands attention and intrigue. It patiently waits in the marshes, ready to strike at prey with lightning speed. The shoebill's ancient appearance and unique hunting behavior have earned it a place of reverence in local African folklore, solidifying its status as a captivating avian oddity. 7. The Axolotl: The Eternal Larva of Mexican Waters
The Axolotl In the aquatic realm of Mexico's Xochimilco canals, the axolotl reigns supreme. This critically endangered amphibian is unlike any other, retaining its juvenile features throughout its lifeâa phenomenon known as neoteny. What truly makes the axolotl remarkable is its regenerative abilities. It can regrow entire limbs, spinal cord, and even parts of its heart. Scientists are investigating these abilities for potential medical applications, highlighting the intersection between biology and human health. 8. The Okapi: The Elusive Forest Giraffe
The Okapi Venturing into the depths of the Congo rainforest, we encounter the okapi, a creature that defies classification. With the body of a horse, legs of a zebra, and a head resembling a giraffe, the okapi is a unique mosaic of features. Its elusive nature, reclusive behavior, and distinct appearance have earned it the nickname "forest giraffe." Despite its rarity, the okapi holds cultural significance for the indigenous people of its habitat, adding layers of mystery to its already intriguing persona. 9. The Naked Mole Rat: Underground Social Oddity
The Naked Mole Rat Beneath the surface of East Africa's arid landscapes, the naked mole rat constructs a subterranean kingdom. These rodents exhibit an astonishing level of social organization, with a single reproductive queen and a cooperative colony structure. Moreover, they display remarkable resistance to cancerâa trait that continues to intrigue scientists. The naked mole rat's unique biology and social dynamics provide valuable insights into the complexity of animal societies and the mysteries of aging. 10. The Blobfish: Deep-Sea Enigma

Yep, everything was falling into place. Next course of action is hiding the evidence, which should be the easiest part of this entire convoluted plan. So his house suddenly has a surplus of "industrial grade jellybeans". If you think about it, that wouldn't even make the top ten list of strangest things you'd find at the Mystery Shack.
Now all he has to do is wait. Luckily, wasting time is what he does best, so opens a cold soda, props his feet up, and flips through the TV channels until he finds something interesting.
The knock on the door must mean his special delivery has arrived.
"What're ya waitin' for? We don't have all day." He is not going to help her, but he will show her the way, motioning towards... an old vending machine? With a press of a few buttons, the whole thing swings out to reveal a set of stairs going down into the Earth.
"Alright, here's the plan. You bring them down into the basement, an' just spill the whole thing. I'm talkin' jellybeans on every surface. The more, the better." He checks his watch, "you got fifteen minutes."
"You got the stuff? An' no one saw you leave?" He laughs, "great, bring it over tonight. We have a lot of work to do."

Maâan-riss Qâiras: Bittersweet
NOTE:Â This is the short for the second Guardian. If you donât want to be spoiled about the character, then you are free to skip this post.
---
An ear-splitting screech pierces the air as Tien stabs the wyvern right at the inflicted wound in its chest, bypassing its shell to tear right through its muscle straight into its heart. The wyvernâs last breath blasts her right in the face, smelling like a Dwarven coal mine: sulfuric, earthy, and comes with a burning sting that clings to the back of the throat. Even with the winged lizardâs lashing tongue and bared fangs, Tien is not at all fazed, having grown used to the sights and smells of these Draconic descendants.
Pressing one foot on the wyvernâs chest, Tien establishes footing as she twists her blade around its heart until the wyvernâs thrashing stops and it slumps lifelessly, just like all the others.
âThat should be the last of them,â calls a familiar voice from behind Tien. Pulling out her curved sword before turning to face the approaching Human man. With a big grin on his face, Kimber looks around, âWe hit the jackpot, didnât we, boss?â
Tien casts her gaze all over the ruins, so does her companion, a Dragon Hunter just like her who has worked for the hunting party she leads for many years now. Someone she considers her brother.Â
It is the strangest feeling, having been raised to view Humans with indifference at best, Tien now considers several of them as family. Fifty years ago she would have shuddered at the mere thought of entrusting her unguarded back to an incompetent race, but she has seen past that. Most times she wonders if the Elves are the problem, rather than the Humans.
But that in itself is the beauty of being a Dragon Hunter. No matter what shape or size a person is, they are welcomed with open arms in the quest of slaying terrorizing monsters. Most of them are already disowned by their respective nations, that is why they find no more reason to begin quarrels with one another. It may be a difficult job, but not any more difficult than any other job for a warrior.
âThe only problem is: how are we going to transport all these guys?â
The question has Tien looking back to Kimber. âWe donât. Not yet.â Tien turns to the others, her voice then rings deep and loud as she instructs her party, âWrap them up with the cloth we brought. Be thorough. When youâre done, load up half of the wagons with wyverns. Bury whatâs left in the sand with the drakes and the wurms. Those of you whose mind and blade are still sharp, gather around.â
As their party moves to fulfill their leaderâs orders, Kimber turns to Tien. âThose weird cloth that took up half the space in our storage. Donât tell me theyâre from ânishil-noreyâ.â
Tien stifles a smile after Kimber butchered the name of the Elven city. But from the proud undercurrent of Kimberâs expression, presumably from displaying his knowledge of the overlooked origin of an uncommon product in front of an Elf, Tien lets the Human have his moment of triumph. âYes, they are.â
Nyshlenorreian fabric are used by Dragon Hunters to preserve their kills so the value does not depreciate as they are transported through changing humidity and temperature. Elves use them for preservation of harvests, especially those reserved for offerings, and are mostly used within Elven territories. Smuggling these fabrics out of the woodlands is a difficult undertaking and always costs a fortune.
âHoly shit, boss. Youâre really serious about this haul, arenât you?â
Tien raises a brow. âWhen am I never serious?â
Kimber nods. âFair point. But why would we load up only half of the wagons?â
Tien turns to the center point of the ruins: an abandoned graystone fortress, its walls still standing strong despite the thousands of years of history that shows on its surface. âBecause I need to somehow make up the investment I made. By, perhaps, about ten times?â
Following Tienâs gaze, Kimber whistles. âYou mean to say thereâs gold inside?â
Tien shrugs. âGold, ancient relics, unhatched eggs, they always guard something. And that something is always worth a whole lot than a weyr of freshly killed Dragonkins.â
The response Tien is expecting does not come, and she looks to Kimber who now has faraway look on his face. âSo you really were serious when you said that this might be the last hunt weâll ever have. Our kills alone are enough to drown ourselves in fine wine for the next twenty years. But if youâre right about the treasures inside, then we donât have to do all this anymore.â
Like Kimber, Tien does not reply, having mixed emotions about it all.
Thankfully for the Elf, the Human breaks the moment. âItâs bittersweet⌠but mostly sweet.â
Tien nods, a soft smile gracing her lips. âMostly.â
Kimber smiles back before facing the other hunters who have now gathered, raising his sword as he shouts, âYou hear that, fellas? One more dive into some musty ruins and we can finally pay back the boss with all the thousand year cognac she wants! No more of that filthy ale she forces down her throat to make us happy!â
The other hunters shout back their own cheer, inducing a fond shake of the head from Tien.
The raucous elation is then disturbed by a shriek echoing from inside the ruins. As the cheers come to a halt, a wyvern shoots out of the fortressâ cracked surface.
The laughter comes a moment later.
âLook at the little guy cheering with us,â Kimber says along with the jeers of the others.
Tien ignores her party in favor of watching the wyvern fly up high towards the sky. Wyverns are hostile on sight even if they are outnumbered, but the one that came out is not. And the shriek it let out is not one of fear; hunters are well aware of how a scared wyvern sounds. Tien has never heard that kind of emotion from a wyvernâs call.
How strange, she thinks to herself.
Just as Tienâs gaze settles back on the fortress, the ground they are standing on begins to shake. A clap of thunder that is usually heard from above reaches the hunters ears. It reverberates below their feet, and aside from just hearing it, they feel it as well. The tremors creep up from the earth onto their feet, quivering its way up their bodies until their balance breaks, pulling them down to the ground on their hands and knees.
Now kneeling and unable to regain stability, the hunters as one welcome the great Dragonkin that bursts out of the fortress with forced reverence.
Tien watches in both horror and awe as the fortress that withstood time is now shattered like glass to make way for what appears to be a giant wyvernâ using the leading edge of its wings as a forearm, it lands on the solid ground of the desert.
Assessing the monster, Tienâs gaze moves over its golden carapace up to the crown of horns on its head. Just like any other Dragonkin, penetrating the scales would be difficult, which only leaves the underside. It will be the same as any other wyvern, except the one in front of them is ten times larger than the ones they fought in the area, which only means that it would be impossible for such a wyvern to fly. While it can still move around with leaps and bounds, it still is a wyvern on the ground. And as far as Tienâs experience goes, a grounded wyvern is a dead wyvern.
Tien nods to herself.
âStand your ground!â She shouts as she gets back to her feet, sword placed in front of her. âWe cannot outrun a wyvern this large! So we kill it, like all the others!â
Just as Tien says the words, the âwyvernâsâ wings detach from its front legs, before spreading outward in a glorious displayâ Tien has never seen a wyvern do such a thing. But before she can think further on it, the monster roars, and along with it, the earth quakes in perfect harmony.
Tien frowns, hearing something beyond the sonorous cry. An unrecognizable pattern of sound yet with distinct and clear succession of structured noise, one with an undertone of expression.
Tienâs eyes widen. Did it speak?
The Elf almost cannot believe the conclusion she came up with, but once more, the wyvern roars.
âOrrtid irayagnan onna...â
Tienâs breath catches. âImpossible...â she breathes out.
âHey, boss! Are we gonna do this or not?â
To Kimberâs question, Tien can only respond with a vacant look.
Unfocused, her quiet words do not quite reach her companions, âIs this what the Dragonkin are guarding? A real DragonâŚâ
The golden titan roars again, louder and angrier, âOrrtid irayagnan onna!â
This time, Tien does reply. Not to the Dragon, but to her party. âRun! Run for your lives!â
Confusion spread throughout the Dragon Hunters at the sudden change of instruction. But seeing the frantic look on their leaderâs face, they all follow with infected horror.
Maâan watches as the mortal Humans, ordinary and odd, scatter across the sandy terrain, weaving their way through her dead Dragonkin servants. Anger surges from inside her, hot and pulsing like the worldâs core. She takes to the skies, looking down on the mortals who dared disturb her slumber on top of murdering her servants.
She lets her wrath free, spewing out the heat that comes from her own core onto the fleeing mortals.
Once they were the masters Maâan served, but no Human can ever make her bow down again. Setting herself down on the ground, she shouts a vicious cry: a proclamation of her awakening in the present age.

Chapter 4 - The Skyâs Tsunami
3rd Person POV
"Audio files should be coming through," Skye tells Fitz. (Y/n) was sitting in the passenger seat of the van. "It's not compressed, so it might take a minute."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm getting it. So, uh, uh, when - when you get back, I'll show you my thing. A thing. It's not - I-It's my Hardware. My equipment. Let's . . . hang up."
(Y/n) giggles at Fitz's rambling and Skye smiles to herself.
"That should do it," Skye says, closing her computer.
"Let's head back," May says, going to climb into the van.
There's a noise outside and (Y/n) looks out the window, finding May being thrown into a wall. She goes to get out, but the door slams shut. (Y/n) goes incredibly silent as Mike Peterson and a little boy get into the van.
"Now drive," Mike demands.
"What about her?" the little boy asks pointing to (Y/n).
"Don't try anything," Mike says, and (Y/n) nods, glancing at Skye as the brunette drives away.
A little while later, Skye begins erasing Mike from the internet.
"How do you know this'll work?"
"I've done it before," Skye says, swallowing thickly.
"Look at this place," Ward comments from outside the van to Coulson. "You're willing to risk thousands of lives for a hacker and a SHIELD agent no one's ever heard of a week ago."
"Nobody's nobody Ward," Coulson says calmly. Inside, the man was grinning, guessing what Ward would think when he was disregarding an Avenger. "Fitz-Simmons will come through," Coulson continues, pulling out a bullhorn. "Mr. Peterson, good morning," Coulson's voice comes through the bullhorn, and (Y/n) sighs with relief. "We're not a threat. We're here to help. But you're in danger, and we need to take you in."
"What did you do?!" Mike snarls at (Y/n), who swallows thickly as Mike's skin glows orange.
All of a sudden, the door of the van flies off the side, hitting two officers and Coulson leans back, avoiding the door.
Mike grabs Skye and (Y/n)'s sleeves as well as his son's arm and drags them out of the van.
Mike pulls the three inside.
Skye kicks some guy in the no-no square, saying, "You're right - he is a little bitch!"
"Go! Get him!" one of the guys says and Mike pushes his son back.
"Ace! Get back!" Mike tells his son.
Skye takes Ace's hand and takes him towards a police officer, (Y/n) following to make sure the boy stayed safe.
Coulson hands Ace to a police officer, and Skye backs up as one of them runs towards her.
(Y/n) dodges out of the way of the man's punch and throws one of her own, then doing her sister's signature move, flooring the guy.
Skye's eyes widen as she catches a guy with his gun trained on her. She runs towards a door and tries to force it open. Mike covers Skye, and (Y/n) sprints after the two, sliding through the busted down door.
Mike tightens his hand around Skye's arm and drags her through a glass door.
"You got to stop!" Skye yells at him, pulling her arm out of his grip. "These people can help you!" Skye says, her bangs falling in her eyes.
"The men in suits? They're your buddies now?" Mike asks.
"Where did they take my son?!" Mike yells.
"He's safe!" (Y/n) says, running into the room.
Mike turns on her and (Y/n) grunts as the same man comes up with his gun and tries to shoot Mike and (Y/n) slides between the two. Blood begins flowing from (Y/n)'s shoulder and Mike falls over the edge of the glass as there's another shot from the guy.
May runs into the room, her eyes moving to (Y/n)'s shoulder and the man with the gun.
(Y/n) exchanges a glance with May and jumps over the side of the glass wall. Skye looks wide-eyed as May takes out the guy.
(Y/n) lands on her feet beside Mike and clasps a hand over her right shoulder as she looks at him.
"Come on, Mike," (Y/n) says. "We're trying to help."
"Trying to help!?" Mike says. "You took my son."
"We took him somewhere safe," (Y/n) tells him, her eyes closing for a moment as pain flows through her shoulder.
Mike faces Coulson and (Y/n) moves back to stand beside her father figure.
Coulson sets his gun on the ground.
"Think that means again?" Mike asks, his face glowing orange again. "I know you got men everywhere to put me down. I know how this plays out."
"I don't," Coulson responds, his face calm. "I know you got poison in your system. I know it's burning you up. Mike, the last guy who wore that exploded."
"I'm not like that other guy. I'm -" Mike pauses, glancing around. "It matters who I am - inside if I'm a good person. If I'm strong." (Y/n)'s (E/c) gaze had softened.
"I know you're strong, Mike," (Y/n) says, her hand still pressed to her bleeding shoulder. She takes a step forward, level with Coulson.
"Your boy knows it," Coulson tells him. "He needs you to let us help."
"You took him!" Mike yells, desperation in his voice. "You took my wife, my job, my house. You think this is killing me?!" Mike lifts his arm, showing the Centipede on his arm. "All over, there's people being pushed down, being robbed."
(Y/n) sees Skye and May running up behind her and Coulson out of the corner of her eye.
"One of them tries to stand up, you got to make an example of him," Mike continues, ripping a pillar out of the ground.
"You bring this building down on us, will that help them?" Coulson asks.
"That's a lie! All you do is lie!" Mike yells, swinging the pillar and knocking down the rest of the structure. "You said if we worked hard . . . If we did right . . . We'd have a place. You said it was enough to be a man. But there's better than man. There's gods. And the rest of us . . . What are we? They're giants. We're what they step on."
"I know," Coulson says softly.
"We've seen giants -" (Y/n) adds, stepping forward to stand with Coulson again.
"That privilege cost me . . . nearly everything," Coulson says.
Mike's expression turns sad.
"But the good ones . . ." Coulson spares a glance at (Y/n) at his side. "The real deal - They're not heroes because of what they have that we don't. It's what they do with it."
"You're right, Mike," (Y/n) says, meeting the man's gaze. "It matters who you are."
"I could, you know?" Mike says softly, a look of regret on his face. "Be a hero."
"I'm counting on it," Coulson tells the man.
There's a silent gunshot and Mike falls backward, (Y/n) and Coulson's eyes go wide.
Jemma runs past, her eyes full of tears. She checks on Mike, and a relieved smile spreading across her face.
"Oh thank God," (Y/n) murmurs.
Skye walks away from the two-story white house, a dog barking after her.
Skye sighs, turning to walk beside Coulson, "I told him his father was coming home."
"He will," Coulson says, as he and Skye walk towards LOLA. "We have some experience with this."
"He almost blew," Skye says softly. "We almost died."
"We have some experience with that, too," Coulson admits.
"Don't have it all under wraps?" Skye asks.
"Yeah," Coulson says. "We didn't cut off the head of the Centipede. Whoever sponsored that little experiment is still out there, among other things."
Coulson and Skye get into LOLA.
"It's a brave new world," Skye says. "And a really old car."
"LOLA can keep up," Coulson says. "What about you? Have you thought about the offer?"
"Hitching a ride on the crazy plane?" Skye asks. "I'm not exactly a team player."
"We're not exactly a team," Coulson admits. "But we're in a position to do some good. You'd be a great help. And you'd be front row center at the strangest show on Earth, which is, after all, what you wanted."
"I was able to hack SHIELD from my van," Skye says, raising an eyebrow. "You're gonna show me something new?"
The phone rings.
"Go," Coulson says.
"Sir, we've got an 0-8-4," Ward says. "And someone docking on the top of the plane."
"I know whose docking on the plane," Coulson says. "And is that confirmed?" he asks.
"They want us to go in and confirm it," Ward says.
"What's an 0-8-4?" Skye asks.
"You've got exactly ten minutes to decide if you really want to know," Coulson says, starting the engine of the red car.
"There's no way we can make it to the airfield in -" Skye stops as LOLA rises to the air with a whirring noise. "- ten minutes."
"The tide is rising," Coulson says, a smirk on his face.

Top 5 most fascinating plants
Worldwide, there are unusual plants... And many of these unusual plants are hidden in the deepest parts of the earth's rich wilderness.
Dr Chris Thorogood, head of science and public engagement at the University of Oxford's Botanic Garden & Harcourt Arboretum, has a special interest in the species of parasitic and carnivorous plants. Here on Mr Plant Geek he talks about the unusual plants he finds most fascinating, and why.
"I've always been fascinated by plants. I grew my childhood unusual plants and illustrated them as well. I am now a botanist, based in Oxford. Being a botanist means I have the opportunity to travel the world to see amazing plants living in their natural habitat. Here are my top 10 fascinating plants! â
And if these amazing plants make you want to participate in my Weird and Wacky Plants Project Tour, click here for show dates!
dr chris thorogoodâs unusual plants:
My dozen fascinating plants should be Rafflesia. This vegetable vampire is the largest flower on earth, its diameter reaches an incredible 1.5 meters. It is a parasitic plant, that is, it does not contain chlorophyll and steals all its nutrients from the roots of other plants. This is very rare, little is known about its biology, and it has never been cultivated anywhere outside the native rainforests of Southeast Asia.
Euphorbia handiensis sculpts All my windowsills are filled with them! I will never be happier than when I field rare sulculents in the wild. Only last week I was looking for a very rare and special one called Euphorbia handiensis, which grows in just two places in the semi-deserts of Fuerteventura. I feel the excitement of finding a rare plant in the wild without comparison
Royal PitcherUnusual plants -
Next in line is the pitcher. The royal jug is a species that grows only on one mountain, Mount Kinabalu in northern Borno. Like other plants that feed on insects, it produces traps derived from modified leaves, but the plants of this plant grow by about a foot. Moreover, these are toilets for shrews! Animals feed on the nectar produced by traps, and defecate in them, ingesting the plantFlying Duck OrchidUnusual plants - orchid duck flying 4. Flying Duck Orchid
My number four goes to the orchids. No other plant family has a greater variety of flowers, and some of them are extremely bizarre. The flying duck orchid, for example, looks and smells like a female insect, and attracts male insects that try to mate with flowers, and at the same time they cause cross fertilization.Â
 - Arum dioscoridis .  Arum dioscoridis in Cyprusars. I just love them all. This exquisite group of plants has countless shapes, sizes and colors. Last spring, I encountered a beautiful specimen of Arum dioscoridis growing in a rocky gorge in Cyprus, and it was a moment I will not forget. Survey #440
from a day or two ago.
Do you drink a lot of soda? I definitely do. :/ I'd lose weight so much easier if I could drop the habit. Are tomatoes the best food in the world? I don't like tomatoes unless they're very fresh and on a mayo and bacon sandwich. Have you seen The Blindside? I actually haven't. Do you have a favorite local pizza place? Not really. There's a place I like that isn't huge, but I don't have like, a serious passion for or loyalty to it. Would you date someone 10+ years older than you? Meh, I think ten years is my cut-off. Are you due for a haircut? For sure. >_< Are you dealing with any health-related problems right now? Yeah. Even with my APAP mask, because I apparently move it too much in my sleep, I'm struggling with my sleep apnea nightmares/terrors. Do your parents like the music you listen to? Most of it. Do your parents approve of your beliefs? Not all of them, no. How many different digital cameras have you owned in your life? How about cell phones? Cell phones, idk. I've had two "pro" cameras. Do you typically do your make up the same each time? Or do you like to change it up often? It's pretty much always the same. Who is the last person you were in a room with just the two of you? What were you doing? Mom. We worked together on my room. What do you usually order at Subway? Turkey, bacon, American cheese, pickles, banana peppers, and chipotle on I want to say Italian bread. How long is your motherâs hair? It's hard to say, because it's all poofy now versus wavy like before it had to be shaved off. Don't repeat it to her ever, but she has, uh... "old lady hair" now, ha ha. What is your favourite car brand? I donât care. Whose chore is it to clean the bathrooms in your house? My mom does it. Pick your three favourite fruits. Strawberries, kiwi, and uhhh... apples. Or pineapple. Have you ever played Cards Against Humanity? Yeah. We used to play that a lot at Colleen's house on nights we had some drinks. Who were the last friends you went to hang out with? Oh jeez, idk. I haven't hung out with a friend in a long time. How many chairs are in the room youâre currently in? Zero. I'm in my bedroom. Are you bored right now? I'm bored almost every waking hour of my days. Have you ever seen a pelican in real life? I'm actually not sure. Whatâs important about April? My younger sister's birthday is in April. Is there anyone who hates you? Jason probably does. Would you consider adoption? Not for me personally. Whatâs the largest animal youâve ever had as a pet? Our late boxer mix. Do you own any kind of helmet? No. Do you ever put fruit on your cereal? Noooo. How do you usually celebrate your favorite holiday? My younger sister comes over here and we open our presents with Mom, who also cooks a nice breakfast. We then go to my older sister's house for the day to watch the kids open presents from their extended family. I say "extended" because the kids obviously aren't going to wait for us to get there to open the majority of their gifts from their parents, ha ha. Whatâs a few facts about the last person that talked to you? She's from New York, has five kids, has survived cancer (one almost advanced to a fatal level) twice, she loves owls, and recently graduated with her bachelor's in social work (it's never too late, people). What would happen if you had a baby with the last person you kissed? We're both cisgender females. Where is the biggest scar on your body? It's probably where I had a cyst removal, which is in a spot I can't see. Would you date someone who was addicted to drugs? Absolutely not. I am NOT getting involved in that. If you could go back and change something in the past 5 months, would you? I'd go to the gym sooner. Have you ever kissed anyone with a tattoo? Hmmm... I think Tyler actually may have had a The Legend of Zelda tattoo? I can't really remember. If not him, then no. Have you ever kissed someone you werenât dating? No, but I've been kissed by someone I wasn't dating. Do you know anyone who drinks a lot? Yes. What were you afraid of the most when you were a kid? Being separated from/losing my mom. Do you like to make the first move? No. When was the last time you completely broke down? A few weeks ago when I was having a PTSD episode. Are you listening to any music? No; I'm watching Gab play Final Fantasy X. Is your hair long enough to put in a ponytail? No. Has someone ever told you they want to spend the rest of their life with you? Hm, it's funny, I don't see him anymore. Have you ever peed in the woods? No. Have you ever played Twister? Yeah, I liked playing it as a kid. Are you looking for a boyfriend//girlfriend? Not actively, no. I really don't need one right now. Out of all of your friends who have you gotten in the worst fight with? Of all friends I've EVER had, probably Colleen. Of the friends I still have, maybe Sara. What is the last microwaveable meal you had? I've been on a SERIOUS grilled chicken pesto kick lately. Mom buys these small Healthy Choice (or some brand like that) bowls that you put in the microwave and then pour the noodles and chicken into the sauce after and mix, and oh my GOOOOOOOOOOOD it is so good. What would you consider a talent of yours? Assuming the worst out of every imaginable situation. If Hogwarts was a real place and you were able to attend, what class do you think youâd excel at? According to those little quizzes I've taken, I lean mostly towards Hufflepuff, but with Gryffindor traits as well. Would you rather learn more about space or more about the ocean? Well, ideally, space, but I think learning much more about our ocean would be more beneficial to our planet and our prosperity on Earth. Do you have a mental illness? If yes, how have you learned to cope with it? If no, do you ever suspect you may have one? I have a lot. My bipolarity, OCD, and PTSD are *mostly* under control, but I most certainly still have trouble sometimes. My anxiety and AvPD are still rabid fucking hounds. My depression was well-managed not even that long ago, but life circumstances have it so it's been more aggressive than what was usual. Do you have a favorite character from The Avengers? I dunno, I like Loki ig. Thor is cool, too. It's been WAY too long since I've seen that movie. What type of cake would you like right now? Double chocolate cake sounds great rn. @_@ What was your dream job when you were a child? Are you going after that dream or not? Why? Paleontologist, and no, because I don't want to travel for work, and I could also never handle the heat during site excavations. Even though it may not work all the time, what usually helps make you feel better when youâre upset or down? Watching one of my comfort series on YouTube from channels I enjoy. Why do you personally take surveys? It's a method to just get all these thoughts out of my head and to vent when I need to without actually directly burdening someone with my problems. No one has to read 'em. It's purely for my benefit, and also to pass the time, which I have too much of. Are there any words that you canât stand? Derogatory terms for certain groups of people. What are words that you love? Words like "serendipity," "bliss," joyous, bubbly words. I'm blanking on actual terms. If you had an endless supply of money for clothing only, what would you load your closet with? Ohhhh, lots of shit with studs and spikes. :') I've wanted a studded leather jacket since I was in middle school. Have never gotten one because of how pricey they are. :( I'd also get some KILLER boots and just obtain a more gothic wardrobe. I'd love corsets too if my body ever shrinks back to a point I'd be comfortable wearing well-made ones. What is your favorite type of cookie? Chocolate chip. What is your favorite type of candy? Strawberry Sour Punch Straws. What color would you like to paint your nails next? I don't paint my nails. Realistically, they probably won't be 'til my entirely hypothetical wedding, in which case they'll probably be black. What do you think is creepy that society accepts as normal? Urinals, alsdkfja;klwejr. Like I get men's bathrooms give the option of using a stall, but still... side-by-side urinals are so weird and a breach of privacy to me. What is the silliest secret about yourself that you sometimes feel the need to hide? That I enjoy forum RP. I tell NOBODY because I fear being judged and found as weird. Like seriously, in my "real" life, maybe two people know. What do you think is a good date other than dinner and a movie? I want a picnic date really bad kalj;dkl;jwe. Do you dread certain days of the week? If yes, what day/s and why? No. They're all very similar. Do you ever give money to homeless people? No, admittedly. Mom instead likes to sometimes offer them bottles of water or if she's really feeling generous, a cheap meal at like McDonald's or something. She doesn't like to hand out money because, well, we know what a vast majority of homeless people spend it on. Do you like to brag or are you modest? I get really uncomfortable bragging, so I try to be as modest as I can be. What your favourite thing to have on toast? I love giving it a light toast, then adding a thin layer of butter, cinnamon, and sugar. It's bomb. Do you know how to surf? Would you ever like to learn? No to either. If you eat oatmeal, do you have it plain or do you have certain toppings that you like to add to it? I love sprinkling some sugar in there. Would you prefer to spend time with your whole family all at once, or would you rather quality time with one family member at a time? Depends on what I feel up to, but I tend to enjoy family time as a group more. That way, I don't have TOO much pressure to be constantly social. I can just listen sometimes. What is the funniest or strangest thing youâve ever heard somebody say in their sleep? I have no idea. I worry what people have heard ME say/scream in my sleep. Do you own a pair of slippers? Yeah, they're meerkat ones! :') Choose one: Butterfinger, Milky Way, Snickers: Absolutely a Milky Way. Who was the last person to comment you? My mom. I'm cool, I swear. How many arguments have you had with the last person you kissed? A lot over all these years, but I'd say that's normal when you've been friends since you were 8 and 10. Do you know anyone who has been arrested? Yes. What are you planning on doing after this? When I'm done taking this survey, I'll probably either go to bed or play a bit of WoW. Idk. Will you be up before 7 am tomorrow? I have my alarm set for 7, actually. Ever been the only one trying to fix a relationship? Mhmmmm. -_- What was the last bad thing that happened to your phone? The case that came with the phone got a big crack in it. Have you ever been with someone while they were throwing up? Absolutely not. I would start vomiting. I can't handle the sound or the act in general. Have you been to the beach this year? No; I haven't been in a long time, and I am noooot complaining. Have you ever skipped school just because you were tired? Yes. Are you tan? God no. Do you own any leather? No real leather, no. I never would. Have you ever bought a shot glass? No. Do you have a therapist? Yes. We actually just talked today. Well, technically yesterday. Whatâs the worst name your mom has ever called you? I don't know. She doesn't really call me bad names. Have you ever listened to Christian music? Not of my own volition, but I've heard it because of other people controlling the radio. Are you the âcreative childâ? Yes, I'm considered that one. Did you like your life when you were in middle school? God no. That's when everything started going downhill. Have you ever been 'popularâ? No. Has someone ever tried to convert you? Yes. Are you a fan of muffins? I LOVE muffins. Whatâs your most recent obsession? It's kinda chilled out now, but when Resident Evil 8: Village released, I was CRAZY over it. I watched SO many different let's plays of it. I think it's safe to say it beats out RE4 as my favorite installment.

@wurmd replied to your post âit makes me sad that we've fucked up so much of this planet. it's not ours. it doesn't belong to us. not only that, but... why...â
i mean humans are apart of this ecosystem just as anything else is lol
i guess i don't want to speak for humanity in general
but i do think that any species that kills a lot of other life to live in a comfortable, self-sufficient way is a bad person
if i thought about it i could think of a cute word for this concept, but it isn't cute to me because it isn't in the universe
let's say there were living things on a planet that did not belong to humanity. imagine that the forces of nature had decided that the planet wanted to be devoid of human life, because those life gave off a lot of wrong signals.
imagine that humans lived on this planet and had a pretty great culture, and after they colonized other planets and were everywhere, the planet decided that the culture was too much trouble for its inhabitants and just didn't have it anymore. the humans would continue living, but the whole world would basically be the Earth, but mostly devoid of humans.
imagine that the humans were diverse, and there were very few humans on the very top of the food chain. there were animals with big brains and big hands and big noses, but humans had furry feet and five eyes.
imagine that the humans lived in a place that was very wet and the rivers would erode the land and the rivers were full of plastic and the rivers were full of garbage and the rivers were full of decomposing bodies of water.
imagine that most of the people on the planet were fabulously wealthy and lived in mansions. imagine that the humans had great science and their technology was gorgeous, but the rest of the world was still a whole mess.
imagine that the humans were very advanced and had things like nuclear bombs, but were very arrogant and not very good at living. imagine that the humans' tendency to bomb other planets was at war with the rest of the world. imagine that the human tendency to wage war against its neighbors in response to nothing going right was a bad tendency. imagine that the human population was constantly changing every ten years.
imagine that the human habit of indiscriminately slaughtering and pillaging, along with the human tendency to regard everything it can use as a resource, coupled with the human tendency of burning or despoiling the world, created a climate that made it impossible to have a steady enough population to produce food, and the humans were perpetually facing starvation.
the human habit of war, and the human tendency to violate the laws of nature and the natural world, destroyed the climate, destroyed the ocean, destroyed every place that the humans could live.
imagine that the human race lived on and prospered, and it was humanity, not the aliens, that destroyed the world.
imagine that the humans couldn't evolve a way to cope with the pollution, because the humans hadn't had time. imagine that humanity was a single great force, in the strangest of all possible worlds. imagine that a single human could destroy the world.
imagine that the world was one big con, and the con was called "everything on earth".
imagine that everything was a weird bomb that was going off all around you.
i've written like 400 words today and i've already had this thought, and it's the best one. i need to go to bed. i'll answer some questions about this later, or post them to a Tumblr chat.

SIDE NOTE: This was requested but while writing it i accidenly lost the ask beacuse im really dumb:( anyways i hope u like it maureen and im really sorry:((
sypnosis: a one-shot in which yeonjun struggles with buying the reader the perfect birthday present and in the midst of reliving some old memories, they create new ones. 2K WORDS
TW// mild use of vulgur language // very soft fluff
it was 2am when u heard something tick against your bedroom window. you tried to ignore but, it just kept getting louder. as you drew open the curtains you were met with the face of your beloved best friend, choi yeonjun.
"morning sleeping beauty" "its 2am" "the early bird catches the worm" he remarked as he climbed into your room and jumped onto your bed. you want to be mad at him from disturbing your precious sleep but, the truth is that this wasn't something new. it was quite normal for yeonjun to show up at your place at the strangest of times without any warning but that doesnt mean you weren't confused.Â
"what's all this about yeonjun" you weren't exactly pleased with this spontaneous visit you valued your sleep and yeonjun knew that. "whats this?" you asked as he shoves a crumbled up piece of paper in you face. "this my dear is your wishlist from when you were 8" "how did you get that?" "we made them together on your 8th birthday, here look you wrote that these are the things you want to acomolish in ten years" the memories of your 8th birthday came flooding back. your mum had invited your friends over for a party and after everyone had left you and yeonjun stayed outside in your backyard colouring. then, yeonjun suggest you make a wishlist list of all the things you wanted to accomplish together before your 18th birthday
"i cant believe you still have this" "of course i still have it, i keep everything that's precious to me." "so you snuk into my room at 2am just to show me this?" "yep!" he smiled clearly very proud of himself. he leaned his head against your beds headboard, his eyes sparkling brighter than any star in the sky. you had to admit that your best friend was indeed beautiful which is why you can't understand why he hasn't gotten a girlfriend yet. not that it bothered you, in fact it wouldâve bothered you even more if he did. you've always had a little crush on yeonjun but you never even dared to reveal your true feelings for the sake of the friendship.Â
"hello? earth to y/n?" "oh sorry... thank you i love it, really" yeonjun mirrored your smile and with a playful glint in his eyes, he stood up and went back to the window and looked at you as if he was expecting you to follow him.
"what are you doing?" "read number 6" "mc donalds at 2am? really?? now??" "its 2am isn't it? hurry up birthday girl, im hungry" you blinked twice in confusion trying to process all that was happening. you ignorantly thought that the wishlist was the gift paying no attention to its contents, but of course there was always something more when it had to do with yeonjun.Â
"are you sure this is legal?" "probably not...hey, dont give me that look this was your idea"Â you and yeonjun were currently at an abandoned apartment building ready to check number 9 off the wishlist, having a picnic on the roof of an abandoned building under the stars. you had to admit, this birthday present was becoming quite scary, but the thought of getting caught doing something this stupid with your best friend was more than exciting. you finally reached the top floor and opened the door which lead to the roof. the apartment building its self was about 12 stories high so, you were quite high up.
"the views so pretty" "yeah... beautiful" you didn't notice how yeonjun was looking at you with so much love in his eyes. to him you were the most beautiful and precious thing and seeing the way your eyes twinkled with happiness made his heart skip a beat. if it weren't for your impatient whines to set everything up and start eating, he would've told you how he felt right then and there, but everything happens for a reason.Â
an hour later and you were both laying under the stars talking and laughing and sometimes not saying a word, the silence was never awkward between you two, in fact you found so much comfort in each others company that sometimes no words were needed.
"did you feel that?" "feel what?" "its raining" "what!? hurry grab the stuff lets-" you were starting to stand up when yoenjun pulled you back down. he reached inside his jean pockets and pulled out the whish list. "number 2" he said nonchalantly. number two was special to both of you. it was something you always wanted to do but never had the chance because your parents would scold you, over time you had forgotten about it...until now. yeonjun stood up and extended his hands to help you get up. he pulled you in close and started swaying from side to side.
"there's no music" you mumbled and right on que, he started humming your favourite song. it was a magical moment, just like you had dreamed about when you were eight. it felt like a movie scene and you didnt want it to end. yeonjun held you close as you rested your head against his chest and whispered and it was at that moment you both realised how deeply in love you were with each other.
"you know, when i was eight years old i considered myself a great artist. however, today...not so muchâ "come y/n its the last thing on the list we have to do it" "alright fine, open the paint bucket" number 10 was very... ambitious. you wanted to paint a disney castle on one of your bedroom walls. sure the idea was cute, but it would've been cuter if it was done by a professional and not by two teenagers who can barely draw stick figures. but alas, yeonjun insisted to stick to the list and so, here you both where, ready to (ruin) paint over your white bedroom wall.Â
"ready y/n?" "nope" "good"
"THATS SO NOT A CASTLE" "WHAT DO MEAN ITS PERFECT" "lets just paint over it yeonjun"Â "no. we're leaving it as it is. its got character. you clearly dont understand art." "oh really? do you understand this" as the last word rolled off of your tongue, you painted a nice blue line across yeonjuns arm. he laughed for a second, then got serious and started running after you with a paint brush drenched in white paint. your bedroom filled with laughter and screams as yeonjun picked you up and pinned against the wall. he was so dangerously close to your face that you could feel his breath fan over your lips. you didn't move nor did you want to. yeonjun however, inching closer and closer until you could feel his soft pink lips on yours. the kiss was soft and short after two seconds he pulled back with wide eyes an apology already prepared, but you didnt give him any time to say a word, instead you wrapped your arms around his neck tightly and drew him into a deeper kiss. yeonjun finally relaxed and melted in your embraced as he kissed you back with so much love and passion. his hands snaked around your waist and pulled you closer if that was even possible. you could feel his tongue poke against your lips asking for permission and you willingly let him in. as your tongues battled for danced around in each otherâs mouths, yeonjun wrapped his hands around your thighs and lifted you up. you wrapped your legs around his waist as he walked towards the bed where he laid you down softly.Â
"you sure this is ok?" he whispered above you.
"more than ok...please, dont stop again" that was enough for yeonjun to strip off his shirt and go back to kissing you. his lips travelled down towards your jaw and down to your neck. he started to kiss all over your neck.until he found your sweet spot. the sound of your breathless moans cause yeonjuns pants to tighten as he littered hickies all over your neck. he pulled back to admire his work and his eyes travelled upwards to find a bright smile on his face. yeonjun felt his heart flutter as the sight and leaned in again to place a chaste kiss on your lips before pulling your top over your head.Â
"you're so beautiful" he whispered as his littered kisses all over your chest and stomach. his kisses kept getting lower and lower untill he reached the waistband of your sweats. "may i?" he asked to which you eagerly nodded. he removed your sweatpants dangerously slow which cause you to whine in impatience, earning a breathless laugh from the man above you. you were getting impatient by how slow things were moving so you flipped yeonjun over and sat on his lap. his reaction was priceless, eyes wide and mouth opened ever so slightly he looked like a deer in headlights. he watched eagerly as you reached behind your back to remove your bra and tossed it wherever.Â
the sight in fornt of yeonjun was enough for him to buck his hips upwards. his hands travelled towards your chest as you bent down to kiss him again while grinding on him. yeonjun couldn't help but moan, he flipped you over again and stripped himself of his pants and boxers. "like what you see?" yeonjun laughed at your wandering eyes. you didnt respond instead pulled him into another deep kiss but this time it was sloppier. yeonjuns hands slid down and removed your underwear, his lips never leaving yours. you could feel him lining himself into your entrance and gripped his arms which caused yeonjun to pull away from the kiss. âdont worry, i got you... i wont hurt you i promiseâ you trusted yeonjun with your life and you couldn't feel safer with him, but you were still nervous. he pushed inside of you and you winced and the streched. yeonjun didn't move a muscle he was so scared of hurting that he waited for your command before he started moving his hips. he kissed your lips to distract you from the pain
"i love you" he whispered "i love you too"yeonjun buried his head into your neck and soon, the pain turned into pleasure and you started moaning in yeonjuns ears."f-faster" you moaned out. yeonjun didnt hesitate to buck his hips forward at a faster rate. he sat up and lifted your legs over his shoulders and moaned at the feeling of your warm walls wrapped tightly around his length. the view of yeonjun moaning and bitimg his lips as his hear stuck to hia forehead due to the sweat, had you moaning and cleanching around him
"fuck- stop that or ill- fuck"Â he continued to pound into you not caring how loud the two of you were being. yeonjun looked at you and could tell by the way your face was twisting and how you were tightening around him that you were close."come with me baby" his growled in your ear. his voice alone was enough to send you over the edge as you came on his dick. the feeling of your walls pulsing around him caused him to pull out and come on your stomach. the view of yeonjun moaning as he came on you was breathtaking. daringly, you scooped up his cum from your stomach and placed your digits in your mouth, sucking every finger while keeping eye contact with yeonjun. yeonjun moaned at the sight and scooped up the remaining cum and shoved his fingers into your mouth and watched in awe as you sucked his fingers clean. after he pulled his fingers out he leaned in and kissed you once again, tasting himself on your tongue.Â
he pulled himself back and laid beside you as you both started up at the ceiling, trying to process all that just happened. "well, that wasn't on the list" you laughed and yeonjun joined in as he pulled you closer. you rested your head against his chest and wrapped your arms around his figure after pulling the covers over both of you. yeonjun kissed the top of your head lovingly and whispered "i love you" âi love you too...we still need to paint over that castle by the way." "ssshhh dont ruin the moment"

tell me the worldâs alright
chapter one; new shapesÂ
pairing: peter parker x stark!readerÂ
a/n:Â Iâm so excited to share this!! More chapters to come :)
words: 5.8kÂ
warnings: swearingÂ
summary:Â
After the blip and when everyone including you disappeared, you realized that things werenât really as safe as you thought. Even under your fatherâs iron wing, you knew the world was going to be a very dangerous place.
-
The web fluid bubbled from the heat as you squinted down at the suit in front of you. The wires were so small and delicate you had to have stupid magnifying eye-glasses on that were heavy along the bridge of your nose. It caused your gloved finger to flick at the frame to push it back up because of how much it slid down.
âCome on,â you mumbled. Your lip was raw from biting it so much, your muscles were sore, but you were so close you could see the finish line. This was something that not even your father was able to do, with constant trial-runs and annoying training sessions that end in failures. But the answer hits you at the strangest times.
In particular, this time it was when you were eating dinner. Pepper and Tony were sat between you arguing as you sat at the end of the unnecessarily large dining room table. You picked at the last of your roasted red peppers, and just one flick of your wrist and a glance down at one pepper slipping off the plate and landing on the table, it came to you.
So now youâre here, and you wonât let either of your parents into the room. Pepper is more worried, her knocking becoming so frantic you had to yell at her to back off. Youâre in a zone, another world where finally, finally you can get Peter the suit that he needs to survive anything that comes his way.
Itâs one spark from the wire as you connect it to your new design when the suit came to life in color. It illuminated the room, his spider symbol in the middle shining onto the ceiling. It was brighter, everything was, something that reminded you of Black Pantherâs suit, but minus the vibranium.
âOh my god.â You had to chuckle at yourself, hands throwing the magnifying glasses onto the lab table and pushing your stool away so you could stand back and stare at your invention.
Peter can now heal ten times faster, youâve managed to mix his DNA in with the suit to cause triple the amount of cell healing. A bullet is just a scratch, a machine gun is a bruise. Everything that can kill a human being in one go will be nothing to him.
âY/Nâ Itâs Tony this time, probably being forced by your mother to do the parenting now. But youâre smiling ear to ear, eyes watering with joy as you witness the thing youâve been struggling with for months since the blip.
âListen kid your mom is raging at me right now cause of you and Iâd appreciate if youâd come out and give her some reassurance youâre all good.â You blink slowly out of your daze, now moving towards the suit again to power it off and place it on the charger.
âAnd uhm, if you donât come out soon Iâm blasting my way in and Iâm taking the damage costs out of your bank account.â
You giggle at that, quickly fixing up the suit and cleaning up the area before rushing towards the laboratory door and unlocking it. You open it to see Tony leaning against the door frame, one of his brows immediately raising at your lab coat and gloves.
âWhatâs up, Einstein?â His question makes you roll your eyes, and you donât say a word to him as you maneuver around his body to get upstairs. Heâs hot on your heals though. You can just feel the irritation radiating off him.
âI donât really appreciate the silence after youâve just come out of my laboratory looking like youâve just cured cancer. Mind sharing with the man paying for your equipment?â Heâs on thin ice, and Tony knows how to pick and prod at your emotions until you spill the beans. But you feel like youâre floating on a cloud right now. You donât really know what to say, who to tell.
Well, you know exactly who youâre going to tell. But that person isnât present at the moment. Heâs probably studying for a biology quiz or swinging across the city.
âI-I just need time to think.â You say without faltering your steps up the stairs and towards the kitchen where you see your mother gathering dishes and placing them in the dishwasher.
âThatâs great, wonderful.â The sarcasm is dripping from your fatherâs mouth, but thatâs the usual. You ignore it easily, moving towards the trash can near the dishwasher to throw your gloves inside just so Pepper can see you have finally exited your little cave.
âJesus, finally.â Pepper breaths out as she drops one of the plates a little too roughly into the wrack before maneuvering around it to give you a hug. Itâs a short pulse before sheâs putting you at armâs length to give you that disturbing stare where she looks inside you and at your soul. It makes you shiver, and you prepare for whatâs bound to happen next.
âYou scared me by just getting up and leaving like that. Especially going downstairs to lock yourself in that lab.â She shakes you a bit, and you place your hands onto her own that are squeezing at your shoulders.
âIâm sorry, itâs just-â
âIt better not be anything to do with Parker and that damn suit. I told you I would handle that.â Tony cuts you off, and that throws you off completely. Well, not completely. You know your father doesnât like you involved with hisâŚother work. But Peter was your best friend and someone that you couldnât risk losing.
After the blip and when everyone including you disappeared, you realized that things werenât really as safe as you thought. Even under your fatherâs iron wing, you knew the world was going to be a very dangerous place.
You needed to step in.
âDad, you know I canât just back off from thisâŚâ You glare at him over Pepperâs shoulder. He glared back with just as much force.
âItâs easy, especially when you have school and work and friends to hang out with. You have something called a life and this,â he motions with his hands towards you and your lab coat, âis not your life.â
That makes your jaw clench. He doesnât really have the right to own your life. But apparently, since he owns basically everything in the world, heâs entitled to own you too.
âGod, Iâm not one of your toys. You canât just program me to do what you want, not this time.â You throw your hands in the air and shift out of your motherâs hold. Pepper looks upset, torn between the fight with her brows furrowed and lips tight.
âOh donât bring out the ownership card again Y/N Stark. You know the only reason Iâm doing this is to-â
âProtect me!â You yell, stopping your stomp out of the kitchen to twirl around and point an accusing finger right at your fatherâs reactor. He blinks at you, surprised but still showing the sparks of anger flowing through him.
You donât allow him to speak again. Youâre grabbing your coat and shuffling on your shoes before he can even blurt out another snarky remark.
âY/N,â itâs Pepper this time, eyes wide and concerned as she rushes into the front hallway where you stood with the front door slightly ajar. You halt in the middle of your exit to stare back at her, listening.
âIf youâre going to him, please, just be careful. Call me.â
Thatâs enough to make you nod with the smallest smile before you slip out and slam the door behind you.
-
You couldâve taken the car to Peterâs house. But grabbing the keys wouldâve started another argument on top of the one you and your father were already having, so you settled for the bus pass you had still stuffed in the pocket of your coat.
It was nice for a change too, to see the world around you without focusing on the road and bad drivers. Everything kind of passed by you in a blur, and now you can sit with your forehead smooshed against the glass of the bus as you travel to the apartment you know all too well.
The next stop echoes throughout the speakers in the almost empty bus. You gather yourself up to walk towards the door. The driver waves his hand as a goodbye before you step off into the night once again, but this time in front of your best friendâs apartment.
Itâs dark and gloomy with the constant police sirens blaring in the distance. You always blink up at the night sky, just to see if you could catch the blur of a red and blue suit or the remnants of webs along the building walls. Nothing tonight, maybe he was too caught up on homework.
Itâs only five long strides before youâre inside the building. You hated the look of it every time, but it was almost soothing. A home away from home. It was a breath of fresh air from the million-dollar technology and new-world atmosphere that you were surrounded by because of your father. This reminded you of reality, a normal personâs life.
Maybe May would be home, she should be with how late it is. But she works late a lot and sometimes spendsâŚquality time with Happy at his house.
You donât judge, Happy deserves a beautiful and kind person like her.
The elevator dings as it opens and you make your way inside, the world being pressed on fast forward as you zone out. When you have to lift your hand to knock on the door you feel yourself coming back down to Earth.
You hear footsteps, and now May is opening the door in Spider-Man pjâs. Of course.
She looked annoyed, but it quickly turned into the softest smile as she looked you in the eyes. Itâs not rare for you to come at this time of night, and all she does is nod her head into the direction of the man youâre looking for.
âGuess you canât climb up the side of the building and into Peterâs room, can you?â She makes that joke almost every time, and, of course, you laugh at it no matter how many times you hear it. Your giggles make her smile grow a little wider, and the two wrinkles at the sides of her eyes turn to four with happiness.
âPeter wouldnât mind me as his sidekick.â You joke, waiting for her to open the door wider and do her little nod. She does it almost on queue, and you smile before giving her a side-hug and a wet smooch on the cheek.
As you make your way towards the bedroom door with a chemistry poster taped onto the front of it, you can see the glooming light of his iron spider suit charging on its dock. You remembered watching your father make that, having a laugh when it malfunctioned and made the little arms come retracting out from the back of it to strike the tables, denting them and making Pepper severely annoyed.
It was such good times, such good inventions. But those were all the memories made by Tony. Why couldnât you be the next Tony Stark?
âPeter?â You knock lightly, grabbing at the knob and pushing it slightly until you were looking into your friendâs room. It was clean, usually that way because of how much of a nerd Peter was about cleanliness, but you could still see the walls covered in trails of newspapers and red strings, photographs of missing people and all-too-familiar evil faces. It was a neat mess, and thatâs the best way you could describe it.
Peter was sat at his desk, and he whipped around in the office chair. He smiled, that same soft smile May gave you, always welcoming. There is pen and highlighter ink all over his wrists and hands, and you sneak a look to see that you were very correct. Biology quiz and heâs apparently on question ten.
âSeemâs like youâve been busy. Set the suit aside for the night?â Peter chuckled at your observation, his eyes flickering to his closet where his other suit was hung neatly on its own special hanger. Curtesy of May.
âMay saw my marks last term, she would kill me if I didnât pass this year. I donât need to be pushed back another year, the blip already did that for me.â He scratched at his head, which he always did when he was nervous. He never fails to do it around you, youâve noticed.
âYou seem to forget youâre not the only hero in the world, Iâm sure Queenâs can handle a night without The Spider crawling around.â He rolls his eyes at the nickname, moving to return to his work that you know he wonât do while youâre around. He just taps the end of his pen on his notebook, chewing on his lip and staring up at his collection of newspapers.
But he seems to freeze, the pen being settled down onto his desk as he slowly turns himself back around. This time heâs in hero mode, you can tell by the glisten in his eyes, the purse of his lips and the shadow that seems to cast across his face.
God, you pay way too much attention to this boy.
âWhatâs wrong?â He raises a brow, brown eyes scanning the lab coat you know he notices.
You laugh almost too loudly at his concerns. How could you have thought the best way to run from your problems was to run right into a man with a spidey sense?
Your eyes meet the ceiling, trying to think of what to say. No lies will work, and beating around the bush wonât work either. You are trapped in the webs of Spider-Man once again, and all you can do is stare right back into his eyes and tell him the truth.
âI did it.â You say bluntly, shoulders dropping as if you released ten pounds off your shoulders. He looks just as more confused, now leaning his elbows onto his knees to stare into your eyes, even deeper than before. It sends shivers down your spine, but you continue.
âYou know how we wanted to figure out how to heal you faster? Like you had bulletproof skin? Well, I figured out how to connect your DNA cells with the suitâŚthey are completely compatible and I scanned everything, checked my blueprints, did tests on the suit andâŚPete, I think I did it.â
Your smile is wide, hands high in the air and body feeling like itâs on cloud nine. But your mood drops drastically, just like at your house, when you see Peterâs face fall and eyes sadden.
âWhat?â Your tone is snippy, but youâre tired. You thought out of everyone, Peter would be by your side in this. Thatâs why you came here in the first place, to feel like you actually succeeded.
But Tony has a tight grip on Spider-Man and has been warning Peter about your plans. That can be the only explanation with your friendâs reaction.
Your blood boils.
âY/N this is dangerous stuff youâre getting yourself intoâŚâ before Peter even finished his sentence you were standing up and shaking your head, a loud and frustrated huff passing your lips.
âYou seem to forget my own father is Tony Stark aka Iron Man, one of the leaders of The Avengers who has created the most dangerous and successful high-tech weaponry for the United States.â You turn sharply on your heals to glare at your friend, but Peter doesnât look fazed at all.
But he also isnât looking at you, his eyes staring down at the ground so deeply itâs almost like he could break the floorboards with the gaze alone.
âWhich means he has his enemies. Probably more than any of The Avengers combined.â Peter stands up, and heâs towering over you, finally meeting your eyes. They arenât angry, but more sympathetic.
But the last thing you need is sympathy right now.
âI did this for you.â You growl out, pointing your finger into his chest, rough enough to push him back the slightest bit. Itâs funny because you knew that wouldâve done nothing to him, but Peter Parker has his guard down completely with you.
Heâs not looking at you again and it looks like he is fighting something. A battle is going down in his mind, and you can only imagine what Tony said to him to make him feel like this.
And you didnât think you could get any angrier at your father.
âWhat did he say to you?â Your voice is wobbly now. You can feel the tough-girl shield you had surrounded yourself in flicker away and weaken. Youâve been able to hold it all in for a year now, but your weakness is standing right in front of you.
âI-â
âWhat did he say to you, Pete?â You cut him off, voice growing louder. You know May is bound to hear you both soon and thatâs going to be another mess in itself. Sheâll probably sit you both down on the sofa to âtalk it out.â Oh god, she may even call Happy.
âHe said enough to make me worried about your safety, Y/N. If you dive too deep into my life youâre gonna get hurt and everything is still on high alert after Thanos.â
âWhich is a perfectly good reason to have this suit!â You retaliate. You try to keep your voice quiet, keeping an eye on the bottom of the door to watch for the shadow of Mayâs footsteps.
âTheyâre gonna find out how much youâre doing for weaponry, what youâre inventing for Tony and being in his place.â You roll your eyes and turn away from him to stare out his bedroom window, glaring down at the city below. He keeps talking.
âThey know heâs your weakness, they know youâre my friend. God, youâre lucky people havenât kidnapped you simply because youâre Tony Starkâs daughter. But now youâre not only that but an inventor of something that could heal people?â
You feel his presence grow closer behind you, and now his face is in the reflection of the window, still sympathetic.
âIt canât heal everyone, I havenât gotten that far yet.â You mumble under your breath, meeting his eyes through the glass.
âAnd you wonât.â He replies, and thatâs where the conversation ends for you. Peter has picked his side, and thatâs all the information you need.
He wonât just let you leave though, and you know this as you take your first step towards his bedroom door. His body steps in front of you, hands coming out to lightly touch your upper arms. You shake him off, shoving past him and stomping your way to the door.
âY/N.â He huffs out, and you flinch when a web shoots out and sticks to the doorknob before you can grab at it. The door wonât budge, you know how strong that web formula is.
âDonât leave like this.â Youâve never heard Peterâs voice sound so small before, like a kicked puppy thatâs whimpering behind you. You refuse to turn around though, knowing how easily you will cave in if you look into his eyes. Youâre a stubborn girl. Pepper said its genetics that made you this solid with your decisions.
âI just want support. Youâve always been on my side through everything.â Your bottom lip wobbles, threatening your walls to break. You start to scan your surroundings, there has to be something in here that can unstick his webs.
âI know you donât see it, but this is still me being on your side.â He sighs loudly, and you can just tell heâs scratching at his head again. âI just want you alive. You know how close of a call it was with your dadâŚhow much it crushed us all while he was recovering. We canât go through this again.â
You close your eyes tightly, flashbacks rotating rapidly throughout your mind. So fast as if the damns broke. There are memories of Tony laid out on the special hospital bed in the room made into your house. Half his body being nothing but burns and dead muscle. The way he looked into your eyes and told you this may be it, that you need to take care of Peter and Pepper. The way you sobbed, how hard you cried into Peterâs arms. The way you came back to a ruined world, five years went by and no memory of it.
âYou wonât.â Thatâs all you could say, and you knew if you said anything more you would crumble. You promised yourself you wouldnât let Peter see you like that again, so vulnerable.
â⌠at least let me swing you home.â Peter was now beside you, forcing you to look at him. You just knew he could feel your pain, no matter how many concrete walls you built around yourself. You liked to think you were invincible at least.
âI need time to-â
âY/N.â He interrupts, and you could feel your last shield throwing itself down. Nothing was left between him and your heart.
You nodded silently, allowing him to shuffle on his suit and hoist you up onto his back. You had to admit, you really did like when he took you on swings around the city. Of course, you werenât scared of heights, you kind of werenât allowed to since your father went on so many private planes and took you and Pepper on so many vacations. This was just another exhilarating adventure high in the sky, but with just a little more of a breeze on your cheeks.
-Â
He lands on your balcony perfectly, having done it many times before. You can tell your cheeks are red from the cold, and they feel numb as you climb off Peterâs spandex-covered back. You donât say anything, awkwardly opening your room and clicking on the lights.
Heâs still there, mask still on as he stands on the balcony right outside your doors as if he wasnât allowed in. It almost made you laugh, but you remind yourself youâre mad at him.
You canât help but give him the smallest smile, gesturing to let him know that heâs allowed to come inside. You canât help but want to challenge yourself, maybe you could get him to rethink his place in all this, maybe even get him to try on the suit and do a test.
He steps in and waits for you to turn on the darkened setting on the windows from your tablet. He takes off his mask with a huff, hair tangled as usual but easily fixed with a soft swipe of his hand through it.
Thereâs an awkward silence filled with tension, and you hate it more than anything.
âYou know, the suit feels less suffocating now that Iâve gathered lighter materials and technology to fit into it.â You throw him a bone, giving him a sly smile from where youâre hiding behind your tablet as you pretend to search for something.
He just blinks at you, not impressed.
Strike one, but you keep trying.
âItâs got about a hundred new web-shooters compared to the last one.â You set the tablet down, staring at him with wide eyes as if they would hypnotize him and change his mind.
His eyes widen about, but he shakes his head with a huff.
âOn top of the already 500 web-shooters stored in there? My head is gonna explode.â That makes you laugh, your body rocking over until youâre kneeling on top of your bed. You crawl towards him and swipe the mask from his hands, running your fingers across the stretchy material and bumps from the web-like stitches.
âYouâve got way better senses than any average human, you can handle a thousand and probably more, but I canât make up that much different designs yet.â You thumb at the eyes, staring into the plastic eyes.
âI should probably get going, Y/N. Cause, you know, the biology quiz.â He points a thumb behind him towards the balcony, and thatâs strike two.
You donât have much time left, and all you can do now is hold as tightly onto his mask as possible and bolt up from your bed.
âWhat-what are you doing?â He snorts out a loud laugh when you dangle the mask in front of you from the other side of the room. It is funny to him to see an intelligent being like you thinking they can beat a superhero like him.
âCome on, I need to go. Itâs on you if I fail.â He walks forward, one hand coming up to whip out and grab his mask. But heâs not trying, and you easily slip past him and run towards your balcony. You close the doors in front of you, now standing outside and allowing the breeze to coldly cover your body.
You can hear Peter jog over and see his gloved hands touch the glass. The windows are still darkened from the setting you put it on, and all you make out is his silhouette.
âTry the suit on.â You say, loud enough for him to hear from the crack in between the doors. You hold the mask tighter, arms wrapping around it and hugging it into your chest. This is strike three, and you just want him to move past those Tony Stark obstacles in his mind and realize everything is going to be okay.
The doorknob wiggles, then slowly opened until youâre face to face with him. Peterâs eyes soft-always soft-as he looks into your eyes.
âOkay.â He says, and he looks caved-in with weakness. All the energy is taken out of him, surrendering the battle inside his brain. He knows nothing is going to hurt him, that youâre here to help him navigate through this world full of loss.
That makes you smile, your arms coming out to pull Peter in for a quick and tight hug before you grab his hand and rush towards your bedroom door. He shoots a web out to your balcony doors, closing them shut behind you both so unwanted visitors donât come in. You thank him in your head since there was no time to waste.
Tony and Pepper were still home, but lights were dim and the house was silent. They were either in bed, the living room, or garage. For Tony, the garage sounded more like him. Which made things slightly easier and less worrying if you made some noise.
But now it was the task of getting through Tonyâs security and the many cameras and scanners he had littered around your house. The man was paranoid and had every right to be.
Luckily, you were Tony Starkâs daughter, and just as smart and ready for a challenge as him. Plus, if you knew how to make a super healing suit, you definitely knew how to disable a silly little security system.
âYou know stealth mode, use it.â You whisper behind him, and Peter rolls his eyes, reluctantly following behind you. Heâs like a feather, and itâs really only yourself that you hear with your shoes still on your feet, trying to avoid every loose floorboard and squeak of the bottom of your shoes.
You both make it down the stairs and snake your way through the hallways. You can hear the tv faintly from the living room, some cooking show being played. Pepper, of course.
The basement door is in view, and you take a long stride to the door, hand slowly moving to type in the disabled code to the basement before you rush inside, keeping the door open to let Peter in before you close it behind you both.
You use the second security system inside to lock it behind you, and now you can breathe.
Peter only laughs, but its a nervous one as he descends the stairs in pitch darkness. You donât worry too much, you know he can see way better than you can.
One last double check is made on the security system before you turn on the lights, allowing the laboratory to be illuminated. You have to squint your eyes at first, adjusting to the light before they land on Peter who is now standing in front of your invention and his newest suit.
He looks in shock, and you quickly rush down the stairs in excitement.
âThoughts?â You gush out as you gather things for the test, grabbing at a remote and letting glass separating another room from you both open up.
You donât receive an answer, but you instead sneer at Peterâs wide eyes and open mouth, a hand slowly moving towards the suit as if it was going to come out and bite him. When he did make contact with it, his fingers caressed the material, smoothing down the slight wrinkles in the fabric as he ran them down the chest and arms.
âTry it on.â You say, not caring that your friend was speechless. It was more a compliment towards you and your hard work. You basked in the pride that bulbed up in your body. You needed this.
âI-â He cut himself off, stepping back from the suit and finally meeting your eyes. That battle wasnât totally over like you thought, and Peterâs eyes flickered nervously around the room.
âPlease.â You donât let him think, quickly grabbing the suit off the charger to throw into his arms. He seemed surprised by the lightness of it and gave it one last look, hesitating, but he was already walking towards the corner of the room.
You knew the drill, so you turned around to give him a small bit of privacy. You needed to set up some sensors and other equipment anyways.
There werenât any doubts in your mind that this test-run wouldnât work, from the way everything was compatible and successful with the data you collected and the tech tests you did on your own, you felt confident that this was going to be a breakthrough in your life, and obviously Peterâs.
âWhere do you want me?â Peter asked, moving towards the room that was now accessible.
You couldnât help but stare, almost tearing up with how good the suit looked. It wasnât too different. It had the same fitted frame, red and blue and the smallest bit of blue embedded into the web design. His eyes were mechanical and had motion sensors just like the one he has now. So very similar, but so very different and the bad guys wonât even see it coming.
âJust over there. There should be an âXâ on the floor that Iâve taped down.â You point to where you need him, and he quickly steps towards it and stands where you asked. Heâs fidgeting and not able to stay still, his knees bopping around and feet shifting. Still so on-edge.
You feel bad, and it doesnât really calm him down when you start hooking him up to machines and typing away on computers nearby. His spider eyes never leave your form, always observing as you do your finishing touches. You need to move faster than you would like to, but this doesnât have to be the last test-run.
âAlright, this is just going to be quick, something small that doesnât freak you out too much.â You move back to the other room, grabbing at a knife from one of the drawers in the lab tables. Peter stiffens, and you canât help but snort.
âWoah there,â Peter takes the smallest step back, making some of the sensors get caught off guard by his sudden movements. You donât worry too much about that, theyâll regenerate themselves.
âIâm not gonna stab your heart out, Parker, just give me your hand.â Youâre stood in front of him, making sure he is back on top of the 'Xâ on the floor before you take his hand in yours. The fabric of the suit is cool to the touch, and his hands twitch in your palm, awaiting whatever comes next.
Itâs funny, this boy has had bombs thrown at him, machine guns attempt to shred him apart, and too many close calls with alien devices no one can even identifyâŚbut he is still scared of his best friend holding a knife in front of him.
Your hand tightens around the handle, and quickly, before there is too much thinking again, your hand swipeâs down, cutting a thick stripe down his palm.
You both wouldâve missed it if you were looking away for just a couple of seconds. Because before you even took the blade off Peterâs skin, it was healing, and by the time you had your hand to the floor, nothing was there. The suit wasnât even ripped, the cells inside it multiplying and reconstructing themselves until nothing was ever done in the first place.
âHoly shit,â Peter speaks. His voice is wobbly, spider eyes shrinking and widening rapidly as he examines his hand. He balls it up into a fist, shakes it out, and you can tell he doesnât feel any pain.
âWhat did it feel like?â You ask anyways, spinning on your heals and rushing towards the equipment to save the data for later. You take a quick glance at each one, and smile at the green word spelling 'successâ displayed on each one.
âIt felt likeâŚnothingâŚmaybe a pinch?â Peter takes off the mask, still glaring at his hand in shock.
âThatâs good. Thatâs really good.â Youâre smiling from ear to ear, now standing in front of him again. Itâs strange how fast the awkwardness clouds over the atmosphere again. You both know the unsolved problem still hanging in the air.
âYou really did it, Y/N.â Peter mumbles, but it doesnât sound happy. God, it sounds almost mournful. It sends your emotions plummeting again.
âI did, and you can use this to stay alive and healthy now. To fight crimes of all kinds.â You say, trying to hold back the frustrated tears building up in your eyes. You just want to scream. You really thought this would win him over.
Peter just shakes his head, not meeting your eyes as he starts to undress the suit.
You donât watch him as he maneuvers behind you back to the other side of the room. You just blink at the walls, bottom lip wobbling, hands tightening to fists at your sides.
âI really need to get-â
âJust go, Peter.â Your voice is hard, no emotion in your tone. You donât look at him as you rush up the stairs and turn on all the security but the back door, still in the right mind to let him sneak out.
You can hear him calling your name, but thereâs not much he can do when you open the basement door, rushing out and back up the stairs to your own room. He knows the way out, and who knows, maybe he will say hi to your father on the way out since theyâre apparently way better friends.

Amy reached up and wiped the sweat off her brow harshly with her hand that held the wrench. At the beginning of the day, she may have worried about getting grease or even Thuluhide on her forehead, but it was getting late, and she already had dozens of grease smudges all over her, and a few splotches of Thuluhide on her cargo pants and crop top. Grease, of course, came with the job description. She was a mechanic, fixing robot parts and hover cars and other things of the sort caused her to get pretty messy. Thuluhide, however, was something she hadnât been aware sheâd have to deal with until after her friend Tails had taught her to fix even more advanced things, like cyborg parts and androids. The world they lived in was teeming with them, it only made sense that she learned how to fix them to make more money, she already charged low for her services as it was, she didnât exactly live in a rich town, it felt like a crime to try and sell her time for more than the people she serviced could afford, so the more she could do, the more money she could make.Â
Anyways, Thuluhide had proved itself hard to remove from clothing, as her pants had many other stains that had refused to come out other the years. Thuluhide was the blood of those advanced cybernetics, cyborgs had Thuluhide integrated into their own body along with their blood in order to properly control and maintain function in their robot parts, Androids were simply filled with Thuluhide. As she tightened the last screw on the oldish radio that sat in front of her, on her desk at the very front of her shop, she became aware of a presence standing just ahead of her, on the other side of her booth. Amy looked up, slightly startled that she hadnât heard them. Even though the street filled with various booths and shops like hers she worked on was often bustling with noise, she usually hear someone at least a few moments before they arrived.Â
âYou service cyborgs?â They asked- sounded male.Â
âYes-â she replied âis that what I can help you with today?âÂ
He wore a cloak that covered most of his body, even the hood cast too much of a shadow on his face for her to see much else other than the fact that he had some pretty sizable fangs for a Mobian that didnât seem to be some sort of lizard or lion. He responded by tossing an arm up onto her table- it was unlike one she had ever seen before, she usually saw cyborg parts that were steel or black, and if they werenât their pain job was usually pretty shabby. This arm, however, was sleek white with two red stripes, one running down the outer of the the arm, the other down the inner. The joints were covered in well serviced black rubber- the entire thing was well serviced save for sizable dents made to the forearm.Â
âI couldnât move it at the elbow anymore, fingers and wrist wasnât working either.â He said, gently using his other hand to push aside the cloak ever so slightly, all she could really see was the matching port on his shoulder where the arm connected, even his other arm stayed hidden by the cloak.Â
âWell, I wouldâve preferred if youâd let me remove it myself...â she started, picking up the arm to get a closer look at it. The stripes she observed earlier now seemed to just be lights that werenât turned on. She frowned.Â
âYou know, Iâve never seen any arm, any cyborg part at all for that matter, that looks like this.â She commented as she continued to turn it over in her hands.Â
âIt was custom made.â He responded simply.Â
âShouldnât you bring it back to whoever made it then? Theyâd have less of a chance of messing up on it than I do.â Amy placed the arm back down on the table and looked up to where she thought she could see the smallest gleam of light off the mans eyes.Â
âCanât. Weâre not on speaking terms anymore.â He responded shortly, making it clear that would be all she was getting on that subject.Â
âShame.â She responded simply, putting her hands up in defeat to reassure him she would press no further. âWell, Iâll see what I can do then. I estimate itâll be done by-â
âCan I have it by tomorrow night?â He interrupted. Her disbelieving look must have made him realize he sounded like an asshole, because he quickly followed up with; âIâll pay more for it to be done faster.â She let out the breath she had been holding and slumped tiredly.Â
âYes, that will be forty units added on to the down payment then.â
âHow much is the down payment?âÂ
âTwenty units.â
It was his turn to look at her like she was crazy, or at least, it felt like he was looking at her like she was crazy. âThat cheap?â
âYeah, well, if I just have to tighten a screw then youâll get money back instead, itâs just easier this way, I donât know how much servicing this arm will cost until I actually do it. I could give you an estimate if you want, but youâll have to stick around for another ten minutes.âÂ
âI just thought it would cost more.â He defended his reaction.Â
âCloser to the middle of the city, sure. But out here people donât have much, and I donât want to take what little they have away from them.â She responded with a shrug, leaning back on her stool and crossing her arms over her chest. He seemed like he wanted to keep arguing, but kept his mouth shut as he dug around under his cloak a bit before his other arm snaked out and dropped her units on the table.Â
She tried her hardest to hide her surprise, but clearly it hadnât worked well, because his arm shot back into the abyss of the cloak as soon as she had noticed his other arm was also robotic. It was pretty rare to find someone with more than five percent of their makeup being robotic. With one full arm heâd already slightly over come that, but with two full arms he had officially gone pretty wildly over.Â
âIâll be back this time tomorrow.â He said suddenly before turning and walking quickly into the crowd. Amy tried to follow where he was going, but just as suddenly as he had appeared, he disappeared. She swiped the units into her hand and dumped them into a jar that sat below the table before picking up the arm again.Â
There was something about it that made her feel as if no one else should see it, as if it was specifically given to her to be in her hands only- maybe the mystery guy had known her mechanic partner had moved on to bigger things and she was the only one in the shop now- either way, she tucked the arm under her own pink arm, which was quite dusty this late in the day making her seem almost purple, and reached up to close the screen in front of her booth to signal she was closed to the market that was still teeming with mobians even after dark.Â
Soon she was left in the dim light of her lanterns that hung from either side of the buildings that surrounded the booth. The roof had been constructed out of old tarps and dingy blankets nailed to the walls (with permission from the building owners) and some burlap hung down over the back entrance that lead to the back alleyway to create sort of a tent like entry way. Wires zig zagged across the floor, all leading to different tools and one leading to a lamp on her work desk that all converged at one very over worked extension cord. Amy set the arm down on her work desk and dragged the stool from the front of her booth over to it so she could sit, turning on the lamp once she had.Â
She stared blankly at the arm in front of her- perhaps the thing that made it strangest was itâs resemblance to something most mobians lived in fear of; the evil robots sent from the mad doctor, Robotnik, who came from a planet they had strained relations with: Earth.Â
Earth and Mobius had only become known to each other in more recent years, after Earth ravaged the land in a war that the Mobians just barely managed to finish off. That was half a millennium ago, so perhaps not as recent as one may think, but still recent enough to keep sour tensions. Both planets leaders were constantly back and forth, looking to negotiate a peace treaty, but nothing had come yet. Constant changes of power on both planets lead to constant changing of peace treaties, it was a turbulent activity.Â
But that was besides the point, the arm that sat in front of her resembled some of the most evil robots known to mobians, killing machines set upon them by a man who had made it his goal to take over their planet.Â
Trying not to dwell on its resemblance to the doctorâs robots too much, Amy finally chose a tool (a flat head screw driver) and dragged the arm closer to her. She gripped it tightly and popped off the outside panel of the forearm where the flurry of dents were. She held up the gleaming white panel in one hand, and in the light it appeared that the dents had come from kicks, very strong ones to be able to dent this kind of foreign metal. She placed it back down on the table- sheâd push the dents up and repaint the panel later, for now she wanted to get an idea of what it looked like inside the arm.Â
Inside the arm looked somewhat similar to typical Mobian cyborg limbs, the Thuluhide sat dormant in the tube structures that resembled veins, and sure enough the red stripes sheâd spotted earlier were lights, but it seemed that somehow they were activated by the Thuluhide. All the mechanisms on the inside were black, making it rather hard to tell anything apart. Even the wires were black instead of their usual mess of primaries, and she began to wish she still had Tails in the shop to lend a hand. Amy bit her lip as she leaned closer to the arm. She could call him, but he also seemed to be infinitely busier than normal these days. Tails was lucky, extremely lucky. She would probably envy him for the rest of her days.Â
With the appearance of the robots that this arm reminded her of many years ago now, had come a vigilante of sorts to save the people from untimely demise. Super fast thanks to his Cyborg legs, sickeningly badass, and supposedly pretty handsome, the Blue Blur had become a household name. He never asked for payment, he never left anyone behind, he just did what was right- absolutely admirable! Amy still remembered the feeling of shock when she had come to the booth one morning and Tails was jittering around excitedly with a smile that looked like it couldâve torn his face in half. Apparently the Blue Blur himself had come by early that morning for maintenance on his legs, and a few days later, had asked Tails to come on board as his official mechanic.Â
Amy was so happy for him when heâd told her, but the twinge of jealousy always sat not too far behind. She missed the life Tails brought to the shop, she missed his stories and his expertise, but she supposed it was his expertise that got him such a spectacular opportunity.Â
She stared blankly at the ProjScreen she had taken out of her pocket, finger hovering over the call button before finally giving in and tapping it, setting down the screen so the hologram could pop up.Â
It rang a few times, and then just as she was sure that Tailsâ smiling face would pop up, it was instead the typical camera icon followed by the robotic womanâs voice telling her: âMiles Prower is not available at this moment, please leave a message at the sound of recording, thank you.â Amy managed a quick sigh before straightening back up when the beep sounded and slapping a strained smile on her face.Â
âHi Tails... I was hoping you wouldnât be busy but... I guess you do have a lot more going on these days.â She laughed nervously, rubbing the back of her neck. âI have something pretty interesting here that I thought you might want to take a stab at, but itâs due tomorrow night so I guess Iâll just try to figure it out on my own... have a good night- miss you!â She tried to end enthusiastically as she grabbed the ProjScreen to get it to stop recording. Amy threw the screen down on the table and grumbled as she leaned foreword and thumped her forehead down on the table.Â
âI guess Iâm just gonna have to sleep on it.â She spoke aloud to herself, voice muffled by the dirty pink fur of her arms.Â
She would have to work on the arm all day tomorrow trying to figure it out, so that meant sheâd have to keep the booth closed for the majority of the day, or at least only keep it open to simple fixes, but hopefully this client would pay good. After all, theyâd been willing to spend extra money to get it custom originally and pay her extra to get it done fast- so they wouldnât haggle... hopefully.Â
Amy stood from the desk and popped the front panel back on to the arm before placing it gently in her satchel and slinging the bag around her shoulder. After turning off all her lights, she slid through the burlap curtains and headed out into the back ally, ready to go home and take a cold shower.Â

OTP Tag!
Tagged by @bitterotterâ, thank you! If anyone wants to do their own, feel free, just tag me back so I can see.
Iâll do this for Carly and Solas from Twist (which is going to be occasionally hilarious). Have a free screenshot of the happy couple too, just because I love it when he has heart-eyes.
DISAGREEMENTS.
Who is more likely to raise their voice? Carly, for sure. Sheâs got a reasonably long fuse, but when itâs up, itâs up. Sheâs far more likely to blow her top with shouting.Â
Who threatens to leave but never actually does? Carly, again.
Who actually keeps their word and leaves? Solas has walked out to cool off a couple times. His promise to her is that he will never walk away permanently.
Who trashes the house? Okay, it was totally an accident...but it was Solas.
Do either of them get physical? To date there has been a single instance of unintentional mind blast. Went with the âtrashing the houseâ.
How often do they argue/disagree? Frequently at first. Much less so now.
Who is the first to apologize? Usually whoever was the first to start shit.
This is super long, so the rest is under the cut.
SEX.
Who is on top? Who is on bottom? It depends on the mood, but itâs often Carly on top. Sheâs tiny and itâs just more comfortable that way. âNeitherâ also applies, since Solas likes to jack her up against walls.
Any kinks? *Carly blushes* *Solas smirks* Yes. If you wants details, go read it.
Who has the strangest desires? I think this one doesnât apply. Neither of them think the other has strange desires, itâs either that or they just line up well enough for them not to notice.
Whoâs dominant in bed? *Solas smirks again* *Carly gently reminds everyone that the Dread Wolf is canonically a switch* (Câmon, itâs Solas in this relationship, was that a serious question?)
Is head ever in the equation? Yes.
If so, who is better at performing it? Solas.
Ever had sex in public? If the rotunda counts, then yes.
Who moans the most? Carly.
Who leaves the most marks? Solas, by a mile.
Who is the more experienced of the two? *snort* The immortal Elvhen Fade-walker wins that without a doubt.
Do they âfuckâ or âmake loveâ? Yes.
How long do they usually last? Depends on the mood. Anywhere from a few minutes to hours.
Rough or soft? Again, yes.
Is protection used? Uh...spoilers? Not anything conventional, no.
Does it ever get boring? It hasnât yet.
Where is the strangest place theyâd have sex? For Carly, itâs got to be in the Fade. Solas has no comment.
FAMILY.
Do they plan on having children/or have children? They have never discussed it. But, Carly would like to have a family someday.
If so, how many children do they want/have? At least one.
AFFECTION.
Who likes to cuddle? Both.
Who gets naughty in the most inappropriate of places? Solas.
Who struggles to keep their hands to themself? Neither. Theyâve agreed to keep things proper in public and have free rein in private.
How long can they cuddle until one becomes uncomfortable? Iâm not sure. Carly routinely falls asleep cuddled up with him. Heâs never complained.
What is their favourite non-sexual activity? Snark. Or maybe chess.
Where is their favourite place to cuddle? On the sofa in front of the fireplace in the tower chamber of Skyhold.
SLEEPING.
Who snores? Neither.
If both do, who snores the loudest? N/A
Do they share a bed or sleep separately? They share a bed.
If they sleep together, do they cozy up together or lay far apart? They are usually a cuddle puddle at the start and in the morning. During the night they roll apart.
What do they wear to bed? Nothing when theyâre together. Carly steals his shirts if heâs not around.
Are either of them insomniacs? Carly struggled with it before they were together. Now itâs not an issue. Solas is famous for sleeping, so...moving on.
Can sleeping pills be found by the bedside? Even if they existed in Thedas, I think the answer would still be no.
Do they wrap their limbs around each other or just lay side by side? See the aforementioned cuddle puddle.
Who wakes up with bed hair? Carly, but only by virtue of being the only one with hair.
Who wakes up first? Carly, usually.
Who prepares breakfast in bed for the other? Solas. Itâs rare, but itâs happened.
What is their favourite sleeping position? Carly as the little spoon in a heap of pillows.
Do they set an alarm each night? No.
Who has nightmares? Carly. Solas eats his.
Can a television be found in their bedroom? N/A
Who has ridiculous dreams? Define âridiculousâ. Weâre talking about a Fade-walker and a human transported across dimensions into a foreign body.
Who sprawls out and takes up most of the bed? Solas. Heâs lucky Carly loves him.
Who makes the bed? The Skyhold staff.
What time is bed time? When the work is done.
Any routines/rituals before bed? The usual. Brush teeth. Winding down at the end of the day conversation. Sex.
Whoâs the grumpiest when they wake up? Neither, really.
WORK.
Who is the busiest? Carly, for sure.
Who rakes in the highest income? She does. Being Inquisitor pays better than she expected.
Are any of them unemployed? I mean, is being the Dread Wolf a job? Apostate mage doesnât sound much better. Hmm, I guess he is unemployed, isnât he?
Who takes the most sick days? N/A
What are their jobs? Savior of the free world and Roamer of the Beyond.
Who sucks up to their boss? They are the bosses.
Who is more likely to turn up late to work? Does it matter when the work is saving the world? You get there when you get there.
Who stresses the most? Carly, hands down.
Do they enjoy or despise their careers/occupations? Kind of a trick question, since neither of them really asked for this. Theyâre doing their best, okay?
Are they financially stable? Very.
HOME.
Who does the washing? Skyhold staff.
Who takes out the trash? Again, the staff.
Who does the ironing? N/A, he wears wool and she wears leather.
Who does the cooking? In general terms, her staff does most of it. But between them itâs pretty even.
Who is more likely to burn the house down just trying? Probably Solas.
Who is messier? Theyâre both pretty tidy all things considered.
Who leaves the toilet roll empty? Neither.
Who leaves their dirty clothes on the floor? They have both been known to.
Who forgets to flush the toilet? Do we even know what kind of plumbing Thedas has? Not sure this applies.
Who loses the car keys when it comes time to go somewhere? Change that to who forgets the saddlebags and it would still be neither.
Who answers the telephone? N/A
Who mows the lawn? N/A
Who does the vacuuming? N/A
Who does the groceries? Both. Keep Solas out of the Val Royeaux cake shops, please.
Who takes the longest to shower? Carly. See the only one with hair issue.
Who spends the most time in the bathroom? Carly again, and for the same reason. Too much hair.
MISCELLANEOUS.
Is money a problem? No.
How many cars do they own? Change that to harts/horses/bog unicorns. And many. So many.
Whatâs their song? The Bones, Maren Morris.
Do they live in the city or in the country? They live in a fully self contained fortress on top of a mountain. Itâs kind of both.
Do they own their home or do they rent? Where does sovereign domain fall in regards to this?
Do they enjoy their surroundings? Yes, although Solas misses what Skyhold was before it was a Fereldan fortress.
What do they do when theyâre away from each other? Their respective jobs. And they miss each other.
Where did they first meet? Carly fell out of the Breach, literally. They âmetâ when she closed the first rift.
Who spends the most money when out shopping? Solas. Heâs super picky.
Whoâs more likely to flash their assets? Neither.
Any mental issues? Aside from the dimension crossing for her and the several millennia long depression nap for him? Not really.
Who finds it amusing when the other trips over? Carly. Solas tends to be so overly pedantic and formal, itâs hilarious when he loses that cool.Â
Whoâs terrified of bugs? Neither. They have bigger things to be terrified of.
Who kills the spiders around the house? Both.
Do they have any fears for their future? A boatload. But theyâll be fine. So speaketh the author.
Their favourite place? The garden of Skyhold.
Whoâs more likely to surprise the other with a fancy dinner? Carly. Sheâs enjoying finding ways to make Earth dishes with Thedosian ingredients.
Who pays the bills? Carly. Well, technically I guess itâs Josephine, but you know what I mean.
Whoâs the tallest? Solas, heâs a good ten inches taller than Carly.
Whoâs more likely to just randomly hop into the shower with the other? They both do it.
Who wanders around in their underwear? Neither. Itâs a castle full of people, remember?
Who sings the loudest when singing along to the radio? N/A
What do they tease each other about? Carly teases Solas about being a dreadful Dread Egg, whose plans all tend to go pear shaped. He teases her for being small and stubborn.
Who is more likely to cringe at the otherâs fashion sense at times? Carly. The hobo aesthetic drives her nuts.
Who crushed first? Carly. I mean, she was crushing on him before they ever met. Itâs kinda weird when you think about it.
Any alcohol or substance related problems? No.
Who is more likely to stumble home, drunk, at 3am? Carly. But it was only the one time, I swear.
Who swears the most? Thatâs a tossup. Carly swears more out loud in mixed company. Solas has a filthy mouth when itâs just them, but itâs usually in Elvish and she canât tell what heâs saying.
OMG, this was so much fun.

Seclusion Day Nine
âI set up the balcony,â Izaya announced as he stepped inside.
âCome help me finish the bentos, then,â Shiki responded from the kitchen. âMizuki should be back soon with the beer.â
Izaya sauntered over, peering over Shikiâs shoulder as he made onigiri. âWhat do you want me to do?â He asked as his fingers drifted toward the plate of tamago.Â
Shiki smacked his hand then pointed to the wok. âThe karaage and tempura need to be fried.â
Izaya gave a mock gasp. âYouâre trusting me with hot oil?â
âDo try not to burn yourself.â
âI think I can manage.â Izaya began battering and frying the marinated chicken. âIs that everything?â
âI believe so. The karaage and tempura were last onâ Shiki surveyed the various dishes of bite-sized foods he had prepared. âI may have made too much, in fact.â
Izaya gasped. âNever!â He stole a piece of pickled daikon while Shiki was distracted plating the onigiri. As Shiki carried the plates toward the balcony, Akabayashi returned.
âI smell karaage.â He announced as he kicked off his shoes and entered the kitchen. He put the case of beer on the bar then sat a fancy pastry box beside it. Izaya arched a brow.
âDessert?â He inquired as he drained the last of the chicken and switched to the vegetables.
âYeah, thereâs a bakery just up the street thatâs still open. I stopped in on the way to the liquor store and asked them if theyâd make us a special box. Picked it up on the way back.â
Izaya narrowed his eyes in thought. âOh! I know the one. They have a cafe beside them, right?â
âYeah, thatâs the one.â
âThey bake for the cafe. Sometimes I grab breakfast there⌠Well, I did before they closed. Iâm glad the bakery is still able to stay open.â
âThey told me the cafe is still offering takeout, just no dine-in.âÂ
âDessert?â Shiki repeated Izayaâs question as he returned for another armful of plates. âBring it out to the balcony.â
âThe balcony?â Akabayashi followed Shiki with the beer and pastries, curious. Stepping out onto Shikiâs relatively spacious balcony, he saw that Izaya had managed to cover the space in blankets and pillows. A small space heater had been set up and small paper lanterns had been strung along the railing. âHuh. Cozy.â
Shiki chuckled. âIf thereâs one thing Iâve learned about Izaya, itâs that when he gets an idea in his head, he puts everything into it.â
âI can see that. Itâs just hanami, though. And the three of us.â
Izaya appeared with the plates of karaage and tempura. âThatâs all the food. Do we need to bother with plates?â
Shiki took the plates from the raven and set them down with the rest. âI donât think so.â
Akabayashi settled onto the blanket, propping himself up on a stack of pillows. âNah, no need.â He reached for a bottle of beer, twisting off the top. Shiki and Izaya settled together, each taking a bottle as well.
âNot how I imagined Iâd be doing a cherry blossom viewing,â Akabayashi observed, turning his gaze to the trees that lined the street below Shikiâs apartment. âGuess itâs lucky you even get this much of a view.â
âIt would be nicer if we could go to one of the parks,â Izaya mused. âBut I wouldnât even get this much of a view at my place. Too high up.â
âDefinitely the strangest one Iâve ever attended.â Shiki raised his bottle slightly. âKanpai.â
The other two echoed him, clinking their bottles together. They set in on the food Shiki had prepared, Izaya eating like he was half-starved as usual while Shiki and Akabayashi enjoyed the food at a more relaxed pace.
âDoes he always eat like that?â Akabayashi asked with amusement.
âYep,â Shiki answered. âOne of the unsolved mysteries of Orihara Izaya. How does he manage to consume ten times as much food as everyone else and still manage to look like he lives on a diet of lettuce and water.â
âI work out.â Izaya pointed out with a smirk that faltered. âWell. I was working out. I may need to figure out an alternative.â Then he shifted his gaze to Shiki, his grin turning wicked. âI can think of one way to work outâŚâ
Akabayashi snorted. âI bet. Youâre fine to go jogging alone. Or doing your parkour shit around the city. I donât imagine you run into many people jumping around like that.â
Izaya chuckled. âNo, I donât. Maybe Iâll take up yoga. Then I wonât have to leave the apartment at all.â
Shiki gave Izaya a considering look. âPreferable to having to explain to my neighbours why you keep climbing the balconies.â
âYou actually talk to your neighbours?â Izaya gasped and Akabayashi chuckled.
âNot when I can avoid it. There is an older lady a few doors down who seems set on talking to me every chance she gets, however. She seems to be the building gossip.â
âI think I met her in the elevator the other day.â Akabayashi grinned. âShe told me I looked like a no-good thug and asked if I worked for you.â
âSounds about right,â Izaya replied with a snicker. âYou werenât exactly looking your usually well-groomed self.â
âNot like I was going anywhere important.â Akabayashi defended with a shrug. âDid you expect me to put on a suit just to bring you some paperwork?â
âNo, but maybe comb your hair,â Shiki added with a hint of a smile. âAnd shave. Unless you wanted to get mistaken for a street thug?â
Akabayashi chuckled. âItâs where I started. Iâm not ashamed of it.â
âIsnât that technically where all yakuza start?â Izaya pointed out.
âIâd say most but not necessarily all.â Shiki shook his head. âEspecially with the way business has changed for us.â
âHaruyaâs right. Depends on the family, too. If youâre doing the kind of jobs Aozakiâs boys do, looking like a thug is perfect. If youâre doing Haruyaâs job, not so great.â
âAre you saying he doesnât look like a yakuza thug?â Izaya asked with a snicker.
âNah, heâs got more of a ruthless businessman air to him.â
âThatâs because I am a ruthless businessman,â Shiki replied. âAnd why Iâm in charge of the galleries.â
âAnd Mizukiâs in charge of the ladies cause heâs secretly a softie,â Izaya added with a smirk.Â
âSoftie?â Akabayashi arched a brow.
âWith the ladies. They talk about how nice you are. How you make sure theyâre taken care of when other bosses wouldnât give a shit.â
âThatâs just good business.â Shiki and Izaya exchanged amused looks. âNothing wrong with looking out for them.ââ
âNot at all. It is good for business.â Shiki replied.
âIs that why you didnât want to join the Awakusu back when Kine recruited you?â Akabayashi asked Izaya as he reached for the pastry box, opening it up to reveal an assortment of bite-sized treats.
âAt the time that was definitely part of the reason. I also didnât want to limit my potential client list. If I was part of a family, it would have been a lot harder to build my business. My less⌠criminal customers wouldnât want to deal with the yakuza.â
âIf youâre talking about the political types I wouldnât call them less criminal.â Akabayashi laughed.
âMaybe not. Some of the things Iâve had to investigate for those types of peopleâŚâ Izaya shook his head. âIâd rather work with the yakuza who tend to be honest about their business, even if itâs illegal.â
âThe real question is how Haruya managed to skip the thug stage of being yakuza.â They turned their gazes on Shiki.
âI made sure Dougen was aware of my skills.â
âVague.â Akabayashi snorted.
âMysterious,â Izaya teased. âHaruya likes to keep his secrets.â
âNot everyone feels the need to share their life story,â Shiki responded as he took a pastry.
âItâs probably super boring anyway.â Izaya surmised with a grin.
âProbably wrote Dougen an essay.â Akabayashi joked.
Shiki snorted. âHardly. I still had to prove myself like anyone else. I just didnât start with shitty errand jobs and threatening people.â
âGotta admit, youâre good at what you do.â Akabayashi acknowledged, tilting his bottle in Shikiâs direction. âSoâs the little weasel.â
âWeasel?!â Izaya objected, offended. âOf all the things you could compare me to, why on earth would you choose an ugly, smelly rodent?â
âYouâre right. Snake is probably a better fit.â
Izaya grinned. âIâll accept that one.â
âGood to know that we all excel at being criminals,â Shiki added with a hint of a smile.
âBetter than being boring salarymen.â Akabayashi countered with a grin.
âI can drink to that.â Izaya agreed, raising his bottle. They clinked together again, laughing and taking sips.
âCertainly the strangest hanami Iâve ever done.â Akabayashi mused.
âOne I doubt any of us will forget,â Shiki observed.
âIndeed,â Izaya agreed.

Wandering Hearts (28/?)
Fandom: Frozen AU. Set after shipwreck but before coronation day. 17th Century. Pairing: Kristanna (Kristoff/Anna) Rating: M (but STILL not for THAT) A/N: Donât look at me.
STARTER KIT FOR BROKEN HEARTS
[ part one] [ part two ] [ part three ] [ part four ] [ part five ] [ part six ] [ part seven ] [ part eight ] [ part nine ] [ part ten ] [ part eleven ] [ part twelve ] [ part  thirteen ] [ part fourteen ] [ part fifteen ] [ part sixteen ] [ part seventeen ] [ part eighteen ] [ part nineteen ] [ part twenty ] [ part twenty-one ] [ part twenty-one ] [ part twenty-two ] [ part twenty-three ] [ part twenty-four ] [ part twenty-five ] [ part twenty-six ] [ part twenty-seven ]
Her days in the palace had been boring at best, repetitious at most.
There were only so many ways an etiquette instructor could guide her if there was never to be a meeting.
There was only so many languages she learned before she realized she would never use them with anyone but herself.Â
She had always been singular, contained, but not because that is what she wanted. It was always because that was mandated. The doors were closed. The windows were shuttered. She could not leave so she ran.Â
And there, there in the scream of another woman so foreign and strange to her, she finds she understands. She has held that scream inside of herself for years.Â
Anna still falls back, exhausted and afraid despite her understanding. She calls this creature before her a woman yet she has never really seen anything like her before. The skin around where her eyes should be is scared, horrific, and vile. Her mouth is cavernous and without words while being full of sound. Her hands are nothing but mangled bits of scrap and torment.Â
The woman reaches, fingers bent like twigs snapped for kindling, and Anna stumbles back further. She hardly understands what she is seeing.Â
She remembers the myths of the draugr she had been taught and perhaps this is what she faces. This sad creature too twisted to quite be alive must be from beyond the grave. Why else would this strange woman be in this place where trolls roam free and crystals glow from cavernous roofs? Why else beyond that she is from beyond the living world? Why else but that she wishes Anna to join her in her tortured fate as one not quite dead but not alive either?
The woman approaches still and Anna trips back over a protrusion in the soft ground and falls flat on her backside. She exhales in a sharp gust and that is just enough to allow this specter of a woman to locate her. She heads straight for Anna. Anna has no time to right herself and she attempts to scramble back. Complicated skirts and aching muscles are no help. If she can just escape this strange deathly creature, can run away from where the trolls had left her, then perhaps she will have enough time to sort a plan.Â
Perhaps she will be able to find Bjarg.Â
Even just thinking his name is enough to give her the energy to try. She cannot simply sit here and let the world unfold around her. She will not give up.Â
Anna is about to rise, to push herself up and run in any direction but where she knows trouble lies when she feels it. A deep, earth shaking rumble, like those that she had heard before. The trolls, she realizes. This is their cry, rolling and low, but why are they crying? What are they saying?Â
The woman approaching her pauses at the cry and Anna knows this is her moment. She struggles to stand as swiftly and silently as she can and is about to run when a strange thing happens. This creature before her with her horrendous scars and haunting appearance opens her tongueless mouth and responds in kind. The sound from her throat lacks the earthquaking resonance of her larger counterparts, but the tone and shape of the sounds coming from her and unmistakable.Â
She is using troll speak, a language Anna has never heard until this moment and the very sight of it steals the swiftness from her feet.Â
What is this terrifying creature before her that cannot speak beyond the guttural cries of monsters?
Where exactly is she?
The earth trembles again, but not with the cry of a troll. This time it is from the approach of the monsters that had delivered her hence. They emerge through the fog with the largest one first. There are more than there had been before. The three now are five, six, eight, ten - and the number grows as they circle them both. Whatever chance she had at running is now negligible at best.
Why had she ever thought this would work?
Why had she ever thought she could be free?
Where is Bjarg?
The circle closes around her. Her throat tightens though she knows she must speak. What can she lose now? She has heard them speak her language. She will not be silent anymore.
âWhere am I?â She cries, her voice hoarse and tight. âWhat is this place?âÂ
She turns in place trying to make sense of any of it, uncertain where her safety is best served in facing.Â
The largest among them, the one with moss flowing from them with unnatural majesty, the one that had carried her to this place, steps forward. Their steps force her back towards the scarred creature she hesitates to call human and she feels cornered. Her heart hammers, breath constricts, and if this is what it comes to then she will not go down quietly in the night.Â
Is it night?
It was when she last remembered but everything is different here.
Nothing is the same.
She clenches fists up at her shoulders, not necessarily a threat, but not a welcome either.
âWhat am I here?â Her voice cracks in a betrayal of weakness she has learned is unforgiving. Still she plows forward. âWhere is he?â
She does not give specifics. If they want to respond they will. If they had found her surely they had found him. Nothing in this strange world is quite as isolated as she thought it was when she was in the palace. Everything links together in hidden chains that make it impossible to deny the possibility that nothing she sees now is that strange, that perhaps she is the strangest thing among it.Â
Still she cannot help her hammering heart.
She cannot fight the rising dread that comes with the idea that if she had looked closer she would have noticed all of this before.
How could this have stayed hidden so long?
How could she have not known?
Had she not wanted to see?
Had she not wanted to understand?
The largest troll with all its mossy splendor bends down, knees going the opposite way she things they should. It is a sight to behold as it still towers of her by some measure. She had never considered herself particularly small until now, until faced by creatures larger than the tallest tree and made of stone. She gasps and steps back only to bump into the scarred being behind her. They hiss, recoiling, but that low grumbling come again. Only this time Anna understands it, too.
âBe calm.â It says. âHere we are one.â
But Anna does not understand.
How could that be the case? How could she be one with these monsters, this disfigured soul? That kind of nonsense is at the bottom of her list of concerns however.Â
She needs to find Bjarg.Â
What if he had been left in the snow, injured and dying? What if he struggled looking for he as she does for him now? What if he - she cannot even think it. The barest idea alone sends exhausted tears to the corners of her eyes.
âWhere is he?â She tightens her hands to fists, fighting the overwhelming urge to just collapse. âWhere am I? Where you have taken me?â Her voice catches as she meets eyes that burn like embers. âWhy am I here? Why - who -â she cast a glance to the disfigured woman, but it is all too much. âPlease. I need him.â
The large trollâs face shifts and its enormous crystal hand reaches for her. This time she does not run. She doesnât fight it as he touches the top of her head with a single finger and seems to trace what she assumes is her white streak. She remembers Bjarg doing the same thing at a time that feels like years ago. His touch had been so gentle, as is this giantâs. The woman beside them moans out more troll speak, words she wishes she could understand but cannot.Â
The large troll answers back in the low grumbles that reminds her of the way water rushes over rock after a storm. It withdraws its touch.Â
âYou have come far, have you not child?â The trolls words are slow, each syllable taking twice what it would take her.Â
All she can do is nod.
She supposes she has but how can she know when she is uncertain where she is.Â
The troll stands. âCome. She will take you to him.âÂ
Anna looks to see if the troll is gesturing to one of their own kinds, but all the rocky creatures part in the mist and the woman beside her takes a step. Anna is stunned. This woman cannot see. How then can she lead?
The largest troll seems to sense her misgivings. They fall alongside her and move their face in that strange way that seems like an attempt at smiling. It looks more like they are baring the sharp edges of their stony jaw.Â
âShe follows her heart.âÂ
Anna does not understand. She does not understand any of this. If she were more clever she would think she was dreaming it, but instead she falls into pace behind a woman with no eyes who leads them through a world made of mist and steam. Geysers erupt around them as they go in strange procession. Anna is aware at all times of the mountains moving beside her. At any moment she could be smashed or crushed or trampled by these lumbering giants. Yet here she is.
She supposed she should be more terrified, had been only a matter of minutes before, and yet her greatest fear is no longer these beings she walks with.
No.
Instead it is whatever they will find at their destination.
She tries to take in what she can as she travels, but the steam is too thick. All she can make out are the silhouettes of giants around her, trailing, matted red hair before her. Yet still she lets her eyes search for a place to hide if need be, a point of reference, but the fog is unyielding.
The mossy ground tremors beneath her feet. She wonders just how many trolls surround them now. She had estimated at least ten before their exodus but she feels that there must be more. She can hear the rumbling troll speak echoing around her. She can feel the rush of air fanning her with the impact of great feet upon the ground. Still somehow amongst these creatures she hardly believes could be true she can only focus on the woman leading them all.
Why is she the one in front? Why, without sight, is she the one who is seen fit to lead? How can her heart lead her to Bjarg when Anna's own being throbbed to be near him, to see him again, but gave no direction? Who is this woman that she has such powers?Â
Maybe the troll had misunderstood her. Maybe she needs to be more specific. Maybe they truly did not know where he was or of whom she spoke. Maybe she should not assumed since they had both been in the same place in the woods that they would bring both of them here.
But then where were they taking her if not to where he is?
What could they possibly have meant?Â
Where could they possibly be going?
She is about the voice her concern when her questions are answered.Â
There is a break in the mist and world shifts from soft green to hard blacks and whites. A field of crystals as far as the eye can see stretch in winding, swirling patterns and it seems so familiar. Her feet stall at the deja vu. See remembers a dream she had, but maybe it was more than one? Elsa is there and her parents and Bjarg but how can -Â
"What is this place?" Her mind is wrapped with shadows. "Where am I?"
The group does not wait for her or even seem to acknowledge her questions. They all keep walking, trolls and woman alike, and it catches her by surprise when she is scooped up in a hard hand. She yelps and tries to hold on but there is nowhere to grab. She falls back just as a second hand comes to steady her. She clutches the jagged fingers for dear life, the motion of the creature's walking disorienting. She looks up and see the most familiar troll's large face with that strange almost smile splitting it's face like a cracked walnut.Â
"We draw near. Rest easy now." It lifts her from his hand to his broad mossy shoulder and she gets the point.Â
She scrambles over on hands and knees and grips handfuls of moss to keep her tumbling to the earth.
The elevated view is astonishing. From this height she can more clearly see just how the pattern of the crystal ground waved and moved together appearing to circle towards a center point in the distance. A point that seems to be the exact trajectory of their path.
Her pulse accelerates.Â
Could that be where Bjarg is? Could he be that close?Â
She is tempted to scale down the enormous mossy back of her companion and sprint ahead to see. The very idea that he could be so near but yet just out of reach is maddening. Her fingers tighten in the moss she holds and the troll looks over at her.Â
âEasy now.â The words are slow, low, and she smells that rich mineral breath as it sweeps across her face. âWe must follow.âÂ
But she does not want to follow. She wants to charge ahead. She wants to find him by her own strength, to be with him the way they always have been: safe, secluded, with only the unspoken between them. Surely even these creatures would understand that? Surely they could outpace the disfigured woman leading them without sight?Â
Even as she reasons this in her mind she realizes that arguing a point as such is moot. They clearly heed not her wants or concerns. They have answered none of her questions and she supposes she should be grateful they have not eaten her or smashed her or whatever it is that trolls do. She should count her blessings that the disfigured woman had not attempted to burn her hands to near crippling amounts, hadnât stripped her to her underclothes and humiliated her, hadnât forced her into a marriageâŚ.
But had it been forced?Â
She feels she is his wife, had been pretending it so long that the lie had blended into reality. She remembers the vows heâd spoken, how she had claimed them as equally as he, how she had begged him to explain this strange world.
Show me, she had said, and she had never guessed this would be the outcome. She never guessed that this is what would be shown her.Â
It feels like a waking dream. Nothing she sees should be familiar and yet her skin creeps with the sensation that this is not the first time she has been here, perhaps not even the second. She does not know how that is possible, but she is quickly coming to terms with the idea that there are many impossible things in this world that just exist just the same.
There is a slight rise in on the horizon that grows as they come closer. The disfigured woman still leads though her steps are slow and measured with her lack of sight. The trolls do not outpace her going even slower than she and Anna feels pressure building in her chest. She does not know how much longer she can wait, does not know how much longer she can keep quiet while her questions hang ignored in the air like ghosts. She thinks she is just about to burst when they finally come upon the rise.Â
The swirling crystals pattern tightens. Each winding white and black thread pulls in on itself leading her eyes to the center point. Below her the disfigured woman cries out. The trolls reply. She hardly hears them.Â
All she sees is him.

Tokusatsu Streaming Guide: Where to Watch Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and More
https://ift.tt/2VR6eGr
Ten years ago a fan of Tokusatsu (Japanese special effects shows, mostly superheroes) could have never imagined the access weâd have to these programs today. Back then official releases of anything outside of the American adaptations, particularly Power Rangers, seemed like a far off dream. However in the past few years especially thereâs been a slow trickle of Toku shows becoming available to stream in North America.Â
In the last few months though that trickle became a waterfall as several new services have quickly become mainstays, finally allowing Toku fandom to finally enjoy their favorite shows legally. This also allows more casual fans a chance to experience these shows for the first time and thatâs who this guide is mostly for. If youâre curious about the wider world of Tokusatsu and need a place to start, this guide should cover your bases for the many kinds of Toku series out there.
Just as a note, we are only discussing shows that are legally available. This also isnât a comprehensive list. Many of the streaming services mentioned below have multiple Toku series available, weâre just picking a small sample. With that in mind, letâs dive into this ocean of Toku, shall we?
Kamen Rider (1971)Â
Available on TokuSHOUTsu (Shout Factory TV/tubi/Pluto)
The release that shocked and delighted Toku fans, the original series in the long running Kamen Rider franchise may be old but that doesnât detract from its enjoyment. This is Toku in its purest form. Incredible fights, trippy special effects, bizarre monsters, and a strikingly bleak backstory for the main character.
Hongo Takeshi is kidnapped by the evil Shocker and transformed against his will into a cyborg. Worrying if his humanity is intact, Hongo still fights for justice as Kamen Rider. It may seem simplistic in our modern age of superheroes but thereâs something enduringly appealing about Hongoâs quest to stop evil despite the wrongs that were inflicted on him.Â
Plus, come on, you canât beat those trumpets that come in for damn near every music number. Highly recommend if youâre down for old school heroics or just want to enjoy some trippy 70âs TV.
Zyuranger (1992)
Available on TokuSHOUTsu (Shout Factory TV/tubi/Pluto)
Many people reading this are no doubt aware of Power Rangers, especially the original Mighty Morphin series. If you want to rock your world, you gotta check out the Super Sentai series Zyuranger. Itâs as far from MMPR as you can imagine, with a team of dinosaur-evolved humans from 170 million years ago brought into the present day.Â

TokuSHOUTsu: Kamen Rider, Ultraman, and Super Sentai Coming to Streaming
By Shamus Kelley
The differences between it and MMPR will be the main draw for most and as you watch the series youâll be impressed just how much the producers of Power Rangers were able to take this footage and remold it for America.
Ultraman MebiusÂ
Available on TOKU
You canât do a list about Tokusatsu without giving love to one of the big three, Ultraman. While the franchiseâs original series sadly isnât streaming (but youâll be able to soon), you canât go wrong with the 40th anniversary season Ultraman Mebius. Following the adventures of the rookie Mebius, the Ultra comes to Earth and joins up with the attack team (hilariously out of context) named GUYS. Mebius, GUYS, and even a few characters from past Ultraman series, fight off giant monsters attacking Earth.

Marvel Reveals Ultraman Details

Both a great introduction for new fans and rewarding for long time Ultra fans, Mebius is a fantastic show to jump headfirst into the hero thatâs larger than life.
GaroÂ
Available on HiDive
If you want something off the beaten path of the big three Tokusatsu franchises, Garo might be right up your alley. Feeling a bit darker than other Toku (and not just because much of the action taking place at night or in darker spaces), the series follows Makai Knight Kouga Saezima attempting to protect humanity against the evil âHorrors.â Along the way though he encounters Kaoru, who is set to die in 100 days, and he sets out to try and save her.
Everything from the look of the series to the designs of the Garo suit feel different from Sentai, Kamen Rider, and Ultraman and if you arenât feeling the more traditional vibe of those series Garo might be right up your alley. Itâs also the first in a very long and surprising franchise so if you like it, thereâs a lot more to get into.
Space Sheriff Gavan
Available on Toei Tokusatsu World Official
The first of the not as often remembered Metal Heroes franchise (although some of the series in it were adapted into VR Troopers and Beetleborgs), Gavan stands out for just how wild it is from the jump. Sure thereâs the story about Don Horror (wonder if heâs a bad guy!) trying to destroy Earth and Retsu Ichijouji (Gavan) being sent out to stop him but thatâs all icing on the cake.Â

American Tokusatsu Shows: Big Bad Beetleborgs
By Shamus Kelley
Metal Heroes have a reputation for bonkers visuals along with great action and Gavan delivers in spades. From the opening seconds of the first episode weâre greeted with Gavan standing atop a robot dragon standing against a gloriously lush background of outer space. Lead actor Kenji Ohba is also stunning in his action scenes and he puts even the superheroes of today to shame with just how good he is in these hand-to-hand fights.
Love action? Love weirdness? Want to be cool and not go with the obvious choices? Gavan might be for you!
Android Kikaider
Available on Toei Tokusatsu World
An absolute smash hit in Hawaii thatâs still talked about to this day, Kikaider is more classic â70s Toku action if Kamen Rider wasnât enough for you. Following the heroics of robot Jiro against the (obviously) evil DARK, the main draw of the series is not just the delightfully over the top action but also the compelling conflict between Kikaider and evil robot Hakaider.Â
We should also mention that while the first two episodes of all series on Toei Tokusatsu World are subtitled, further episodes that will be uploaded wonât have them and itâs being left up to fans to subtitle the rest. Even without subtitles though, Kikaiderâs action should more than keep your attention.
Dynaman (Night Flight Dub)
Available on Night Flight Plus
Easily the strangest entry on this list, Night Flightâs Dynaman isnât just the seventh entry in the Super Sentai series. Oh no, itâs a little known dub of the show that aired on USA Networkâs Night Flight program in the â80s. Itâs a gag dub through and through and mostly relies on pop culture jokes and (and weâre being generous here) outdated humor.Â
Still, itâs a peek into one of the earliest examples of Toku being brought to America on a large scale. For that alone itâs worth checking out, especially for those interested in the history of Toku in America and exploring the âwhat ifâ of imagining this getting popular instead of Power Rangers.
Gridman The Hyper Agent
Available on TOKU
Bold proclamation to make, but Gridman has the absolute best design of any Tokusatsu hero ever. It takes what worked well enough for Ultraman but added extra detail in all the right places to create a truly iconic look for a hero.Â
Gridman follows three hip computer kids (Naoto, Ippei, and Yuka) whose videogame superhero is taken over by the interdimensional Gridman who then combines with Naoto. The computer hero fights against the digital monsters of the evil Kahn Digifer in some of the best looking fights of all the series weâve mentioned. Some shows might have better action overall but the look of the computerized world of Gridman canât be beat.

SSSS. GRIDMAN Episode 1 Review: Awakening
By Shamus Kelley
The show may look familiar to some American fans as its footage was used in Superhuman Samurai Syber-Squad. Gridaman also experienced a revival in the form of the SSSS.GRIDMAN anime, which redid some of the concepts of the original series with a few easter eggs to Syber-Squad for very hardcore fans.
Special Rescue Exceedraft
Available on Toei Tokusatsu World Official
Look, Iâm going to be real with you. Iâve only seen the first two episodes of Exceedraft. I have no idea if the whole series is good. What I can tell you though is that the first episode is straight up the most batshit wild episode of any Toku Iâve ever seen. Itâs like if someone took the plot of Speed and said:Â
âAha, letâs do this but condense it down to 20 minutes, add in some shiny superheroes, and make it way more intense.â Also, the title of the episode is âThe Kindergarten Bus of Death.â Just watch it. If you watch nothing else on this list, watch this episode. Itâs Toku on, well, speed and itâs fantastic.
Jetman
Available on TokuSHOUTsu (Shout Factory TV/tubi/Pluto)
What if Super Sentai, but a soap opera? Itâs not that Tokusatsu had never had soap opera elements before or after this series, but Jetman took that idea to a level thatâs still being talked about today. When Red Ranger Ryuuâs partner is killed in an attack by the (say it with us now) evil Vyram, the powerful âBirdonic Wavesâ are unleashed on four unsuspecting civilians. Ryuu recruits them and they become the Jetman team.
With strong characterization from the start, Jetman stands out by jumping into the romance between team members as Ryuu struggles with his growing attraction to White Ranger Kaori. Itâs standard soap opera stuff, with a love triangle thrown in for good measure (which would have been better if Kaori was given more agency), but if you love those tropes then Jetman might be the series for you.
As we said earlier, this is only a small sampling of some of the shows available on streaming sites in North America. What are some of your favorite Tokusatsu series that are available to watch and which ones do you hope are picked up in the future?
