Bajan Newscap 1/6/2017
Good Morning #realdreamchasers! Here is your daily newscap. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Today (BT) or by purchasing a Weekend Nation Newspaper (WN).
PREPARE FOR BITTER TIMES - The Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) Thursday stopped short of saying “we told you so”. However, with Governor of the Central Bank of Barbados Dr Delisle Worrell currently using the dreaded ‘d’ word –– devaluation –– amid a worrying decline in this country’s foreign reserves, the Opposition’s lead spokesman on economic matters Clyde Mascoll has warned of more belt-tightening measures to come. “Now that Government’s policies have failed as predicted, the Governor is using the threat of devaluation to sell the need for more taxation and/or cuts in Government expenditure,” Mascoll said. The warning came on the heels of a now seven-year-old homegrown fiscal consolidation programme, which the BLP describes as an abysmal failure. In response, Mascoll, a respected economist, said “this means that the suffering Barbadians have been enduring for the last eight years has been in vain”. He also suggested that Government had been lying all along to the people of Barbados about the country’s economic health. (BT)
NEW MAN GETS GM POST AT BWA - After acting in the post for almost five years, Dr John Mwansa will not be appointed general manager of the Barbados Water Authority (BWA). The person given the nod for general manager is said to be a Barbadian who has been working in Trinidad and Tobago. He is supposed to take up the post on February 1. According to a report on Starcom Network news yesterday evening, the substantive manager of engineering at The Pine, St Michael organisation was among several senior managers who were overlooked when chairman Dr Atlee Brathwaite announced changes to the top positions at a staff meeting yesterday. Mwansa has reportedly been offered another position at the corporation, which is yet to be disclosed. It is also understood that the management team was informed about the changes at a separate meeting on Wednesday. Some of the changes will be effective January 15. The positions of director of engineering and director of projects, which were among senior positions advertised, have been filled by people who were not in key senior roles previously. Two senior engineers have reportedly been bypassed for those roles. The report also stated that the Barbados Workers’ Union, which up to mid-2016 was involved in a lengthy battle for workers to get payments due them over a period of years, was looking into the changes on behalf of some of its members. The union is expected to issue a statement on the matter in the coming days. (WN)
NUPW PAY TALKS - Barbados’ largest public sector union, the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), is continuing to press for an early resumption to talks for salary increases for the island’s 9,000 civil servants. Immediately after declaring victory in talks with Grantley Adams International Airport Inc for a pay rise for airport workers, NUPW President Akanni McDowall had given notice of his intention to demand an early return to the negotiating table with the Ministry of the Civil Service. Contending that public workers had not received a pay hike in six years, the NUPW has requested a 23 per cent increase.McDowall told Barbados TODAY this morning he was optimistic the two sides would get down to business as soon as possible to conclude negotiations which began about a year ago. In defending its decision to demand a 23 per cent pay rise, then Acting Deputy General Secretary Delcia Burke said last May the requested increase was not unrealistic when factors such as increases in the cost of living and inflation were taken into consideration. (BT)
BSTU SENDS WARNING T O MINISTRY - We are on to you! That seems to be the message beingsent to the Ministry of Education by the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), in relation to the handling of the environmental issues at the Combermere School, which have seen students in the first through fourth forms out of school since November. Earlier this week union president, Mary Redman, demanded a meeting with the ministry about the issues affecting her members, but yesterday she was up in arms at the fact that the meeting was called for today – the last day of the Christmas holiday. Redman is also perturbed that acting Minister of Education Senator Harry Husbands had chosen to meet with parents hours ahead of the scheduled 3 p.m. meeting with the union. (WN)
DEAD RATS AT SCHOOL MEALS - The discovery of dead rats at the School Meals Service’s Lancaster, St James branch, ground work to a halt for the second straight day. After returning to work on Wednesday following a three-week vacation, workers were greeted by a putrid smell from the building. As a result, health authorities were called in to investigate the situation and it was discovered that the scent was due to several dead rats on the compound. The discovery prompted authorities from the Ministry of Health to order a full industrial cleaning of the building. (WN)
FORGET ABOUT POTHOLES - Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has responded to the recent public outcry about potholes, saying they were simply one of the inconveniences of life. During a reception for repeat visitors at his official residence last night, the Prime Minister further downplayed the issue which has been a source of much national debate and consternation, especially among motorists, saying even tourists understood and expected to encounter potholes. “They don’t behave as though they’ve never seen potholes in the roads in their lives, and they do not behave as though their societies are crime free,” said Stuart as he briefly entered the escalating public debate on the issue. before a mostly international audience that included Kellman and other members of his Cabinet, Stuart appeared dismissive of the entire issue. “They [tourists] understand the real world, and in spite of the fact that from time to time you may have the inconveniences, which are really transitory, the warmth and the hospitality of the people of Barbados is what keeps them coming,” he said. “That’s the magnet that attracts them to this society,” he added. (BT)
A WASTE - Road safety advocate Sharmane Roland-Bowen is taking a swipe at Government for spending millions of dollars on an underutilized pedestrian overpass in The Pine, St Michael four years ago while neglecting the deteriorating road conditions over the years. Complaining that the potholes across the island had been ignored for much too long, Roland-Bowen said the overpass was “such a waste of money” that should have instead been spent on more pressing road problems. The $2.4 million footbridge near the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation was erected in late 2012. In the 2016-17 Estimates of Expenditure and Revenue laid in the House of Assembly in March last year, the Ministry of Transport and Works was allocated $142.452 million, up from $123.793 million, with a further $68.426 million proposed for road network services. Late last year Government embarked on a $2 million mill and pave road repair programme, including patching the numerous potholes. (BT)
ROCK HARD CEMENT - The local cement company Rock Hard has shattered the virtual wall that had been barring it from entering the regional market. Having complained eight months ago it was experiencing a hard time selling outside of Barbados, the company is now about to enter several territories. Executive Chairman Mark Maloney said a ship offloaded cement here yesterday and would proceed to St Lucia tomorrow before heading to St Vincent and the Grenadines and Guyana. In addition, Maloney said, Rock Hard cement could soon be available in another three countries. “Rock Hard Cement is also looking to work with distributors in Grenada, Dominica and Antigua as well as in markets further north in the coming months,” the businessman said. The Rock Hard Cement company is embroiled in a court battle with Town & Country Planning over its facility close to the Flour Mill just off Spring Garden Highway. The state agency responsible for monitoring physical development plans had issued an enforcement notice against the company, which Rock Hard challenged. (BT)
GUESTS RETURN TO GENTLE BREEZE – The smell is almost gone and the once overflowing sewage has completely disappeared. More importantly, the guests have returned. It’s shaping up to be quite a happy New Year for management and guests at Gentle Breeze Apartments. Three weeks after manager Emily Long complained about the awful stench permeating the Worthing, Christ Church property due to leaking sewage, she is now breathing a sigh of relief. Last December, Long said all of its guests had checked out, complaining that they could not cope with the smell. (WN)
NEW LAWS FOR SMALL DOLPHINS - Local authorities are so concerned about the volume of juvenile dolphins local fisherman are hauling in and selling that new regulations are being implemented to make it illegal to handle those below a certain size. Chief Fisheries Officer Stephen Willoughby revealed the new regulations should be in place in a few months, making it an offence to not only catch small dolphins, but to buy or sell them as well. According to well placed sources in the local industry, officials are worried that the practice has become so common in the region that they took the matter to CARICOM for agreement on a common approach to protecting the economically important protein source. The issue was raised with the WEEKEND NATION by a veteran fisherman and boat owner who spoke only under the condition of anonymity for fear that his investment could be targeted by colleagues in the sector who object to his stance. (WN)
DROP IN DOMESTIC ABUSE – The number of domestic violence cases here dropped last year when compared to 2015, according to anti-violence campaigner Liesel Daisley. The founder of the non-profit organization Service Alliance for Violent Encounters (SAVE) Foundation did not provide statistics to back her conclusion. However, she told Barbados TODAY there was a noticeable decline in reports of abuse in the home. “We have seen some improvement as far as the reporting goes of domestic violence. I found there were less incidents last year and less violent episodes in terms of women being murdered or being harmed seriously,” Daisley said. She attributed the decline to an abundance of educational programmes facilitated by SAVE and other charitable organizations. At the same time, Daisley warned against complacency, insisting more must be done to eliminate the scourge. (BT)
GRIFFITH FACING COMMISIONER OF POLICE HURDLE- Disagreement has AGAIN surfaced within the ranks of the Royal Barbados Police Force (RBPF). This time it has to do with the official filling of the post of Commissioner of Police (CoP). In an unprecedented stipulation issued by Government’s Chief Personnel Officer, the new commissioner of police is expected to be the holder of an academic degree and must have completed management training at a police academy or college among other things. This new requirement virtually eliminates the current Acting Commissioner of Police Tyrone Griffith, who has been at the helm of the force for the past three years, from being appointed to the top spot. Griffith, 62, joined the force in 1975 and was elevated to acting top cop after then Commissioner of Police Darwin Dottin was suspended from duties. (WN)
CRASH CONCERNS - Rear end collisions, traffic lights not working and pedestrians crossing the road oblivious to the movement of vehicles are among the major problems causing insurance companies to pay large sums to settle claims. These were among the 12 most common accident claims identified by Co-operators General Insurance after a thorough audit of its records for the past two years. And general manager Anton Lovell is satisfied that the situation in not peculiar to his company. To combat the problem in 2017, the company is advising all 13 000 of its policyholders on how to avoid these most frequent accidents as well as asking authorities to respond appropriately to bring about improvements. To avoid rear-end collisions, Co-operators is insisting that those it insures drive no closer than two car lengths behind the vehicle in front of them and set aside distracting devices such as cellphones and tablets. (WN)
MISSING WOMAN - Police are seeking the public’s assistance in locating a missing 23-year-old woman. Vincentia Isidore of Allmans Road of Checker Hall, St Lucy was last seen by her mother around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 when she departed their residence for work at the Sandy Lane Hotel. At the time she was wearing a long black pants, white t-shirt with buttons to the front, black shoes, black socks, and was carrying a black bag with the letters “MK” printed on the front of the bag. She was also wearing a gold coloured watch and a diamond type ring. Vincentia is 5’ 9” tall, medium build, dark complexion, full breasted, has thick lips, sleepy eyes, a big nose and thick eyebrows. She has a tattoo of the word “KING” on her left inner arm, speaks with a soft voice and is pleasant mannered. Anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact District ‘E’ Police Station at 419-1730, 419-1731, the Emergency number 211, or the nearest police station. (BT)
STRUGGLE TO GET MUM HOME - A Jamaican woman is heartbroken and struggling for funds to fly her mother’s body from Barbados back home for burial. The family of Hyacinth Mendez (below), 59, of Richmond Gap, St Michael, who died on Christmas Day due to colon cancer, do not have enough money to fly the body to Jamaica. Daughter Nickesha Fraser is in Barbados seeing after the affairs of her mother and said the ordeal was made worse since she and her sisters did not even know their mother was sick. “The family is not coping well. My mother was here sick and none of us knew and by the time we did, it was too late,” she said, fighting tears. (WN)
SEASON OPENER - With just ten days to go before the start of the 2017 Mount Gay Round Barbados Race Series (16-24 January), the festival atmosphere in Barbados is starting to rumble. Overseas entries, including Tony Lawson’s record-breaking MOD70 – MS Barbados Concise 10, skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield is already in Bridgetown preparing to defend the Absolute Multihull record the team broke last year in the event’s 80th anniversary year. They wowed the crowds in a thrilling finish that saw them complete the 60nm course just 12 seconds ahead of Phaedo3, co-skippered by Lloyd Thornburg and Brian Thompson, with a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes, 38 seconds. In an effort to maintain the event’s tradition, which saw the first race in 1936 based upon bragging rights for the fastest Trading Schooner round Barbados, there’s a strong classic revival this year.During the run-up to the Mount Gay Round Barbados Race, competitors will enjoy a mix of serious and fun racing in the three-day Coastal Series. Those heading north, post event can also enjoy a final 265nm Ocean Passage Race to Antigua to link up with the Superyacht Challenge. (BT)
BOOST TO MASTERS CRICKET - THE Barbados Masters G4S Over-40s Cricket Competition promises to be bigger this year with the addition of three new teams and the advent of a former Test opening batsman. The 35 overs-a-side tournament, now in its 36th year, will start tomorrow, featuring 35 teams in four zones. The top two teams from each zone will contest the quarter-finals on February 25 with the semi-finals carded for March 5. At a press conference yesterday, one of the tournament’s organisers, Sam Wilkinson, said that Brereton, fresh from capturing the Division 2 title, will be among the new teams taking part. The other two are Princess Margaret Old Scholars and Mapp Hill. Wilkinson said that the tournament was growing and had a huge fan base. (WN)
BFA REVEALS FRESH KICK - The Barbados Football Association (BFA) has added some new rules and incentives for the Digicel Premier League season, which kicks off on Sunday at the Usain Bolt Sports Complex. President of the association, Randy Harris, said at a press conference at their Wildey headquarters yesterday that whenever there were awards there were also expectations from the clubs, and as a result they had introduced a number of changes for 2017. These changes, he said, should see teams play a more exciting and attacking style of football. “As you know, we had problems with results, with what we can deem as suspicious results over the last two years, and we are looking to put things in place to prevent such occurrences from happening again. (WN)
NOT A WORD - Apparently the Bajan public isn’t the only one in the dark. Athletics Association of Barbados (AAB) president Catherine Jordan is concerned about the lack of communication with the National Sports Council (NSC) board regarding the state of the National Stadium. Jordan expressed the sentiment in a wide-ranging interview with WEEKENDSPORT at the Waterford venue, where the crumbling stands have been condemned for more than a year now. “I can’t talk about the Stadium because no one talks about the Stadium. Occasionally the minister comes out and says something about the Stadium, but it’s easy to pick up an architectural drawing every now and then and put it out there when there’s nothing to support it,” said Jordan, a former NSC board member. (WN)
