Bakugou Katsuki wasn't supposed to fall in love.
He long ago claimed it wasn't for him and he sure as hell wasn't supposed to fall in love with his neighbor in a shitty apartment complex after a suspension, more like a fucking exile, to the United States.
The argument and reprimanding fresh in his mind even after the grueling fourteen hour red eye. He was the only man awake on the plane, leg shaking as he hates anything that puts him in a position to trust someone else.
"I told you, he was in my fucking blind spot!" Bakugou shouts for the fourth time and the head of the hero commission shakes her head.
"So you didn't see him. What if he was a civilian? You nearly killed him. The public demands consequences."
"Since when do you give a fuck about my public image?" Bakugou snarls, staring her down. One eye a clouded garnet and the other a burning ember, "Ya sure had a good time trying to show off my disability. Cause the hero commission is so fuckin inclusive."
"Kaachan."
"Shut the fuck Deku!" Bakugou snarls, facing the mop of green curls, fisting the man's shirt. He hadn't lost his cool like this in nearly a decade but everything was grating to the nearly thirty year old. Especially today.
The pair, despite being the top heroes of Japan, were in over their heads when the syndicate they were breaking up had an unexpected ace up their sleeve. Temporary quirk silencers and strong ones at that. The hit Izuku who normally flanks Bakugou's now 'weaker' flank. And when someone much smaller than Izuku stepped into his blind spot his quirk acted out on its own. Igniting from the scar tissue on his arm and hitting the random Yakuza point blank in the face.
"Enough! I would be thanking Izuku if I were you. He's the reason you haven't been formally asked to step down. He's the one who found a happy middle ground. You're to train with a Hero in the states, if she sees improvement within two years you'll come back to Japan to continue your career. If not then you'll have to hang up your grenade belt for good."
"Yea cause sending me where the crime rate is practically tripled sounds like a great fuckin idea."
"Shitty fucking Deku." He hisses to himself as he grips harshly at his luggage, the plastic starting to melt from his grip.
He looks up at the apartment complex he's meant to stay in. It's worse for ware and every window on the first to the third floor has iron bars aside from the ones lucky enough to be snug against a rusted out fire escape.
He can feel it already. The eyes, all the fucking eyes that greedily drink in his cloudy eye and deep fissures that snake from his finger tips around his wrist and thick forearm. Dancing along the curve of his elbow and the veins of his shoulders. Even into his hairline, damaging it so deep that his sideburn never did grow back, his ear still gaged but the cartilage at the top split and jagged.
But eyes always lingered on how it branched up his throat, splashing onto his cheek stopping just before his nose but reaching the edge of his eyebrow.
He was considered a handsome man, once.
Eyes that burn him like a brand and he follows the weight of the gaze to a kid, a little boy. Patience far too thin he bares his teeth before growling out in perfect English.
"Fuck ya lookin?" The kid rounds the corner again, choking a sob before Bakugou lugs his one suitcase into the rotting complex. Taking the stairs, since there were only stairs, letting his big hero combat boots sink into the damp carpet. Each step brings a fresh waft of mildew to his nostrils, further souring his mood with each floor he rises.
"No tenant's laws in this bitch?" He growls in his mother tongue, agitated.
Getting to the sixth floor of the old brick building sandwiched between two identical dying residences. Finding his door 6C by the ware of the wood alone, the letter and number had long since fallen out of the stripped holes in the door.
He fishes in his pocket for the key, trying to shove it in. He flips it around once, twice, back to the original position and the goddamn thing won't fit. His palm pressed to the thin wooden door, the wood smoking from his touch and he has half a mind to blow the goddamn door off it's cheap hingest. It wouldn't take much.
Hell he was sure he could just open it with one rough shove of his shoulder and the door would fall flat into the foyer, if there even was one.
"Oh. Door trouble?" You've snuck up on him, on his right side in his goddamn blind spot and he turns just as his quirk hisses and pops to life. Caramel scents the air and his black skull shirt sleeve is fried.
"Ah M sorry." You smile sheepishly, "I don't mean to sneak up on you. Bad habit. I'm your neighbor, 6D."
You give him your name and he forgets it before you even finish shoving out the syllables. Snarling at you with disgust but his animosity either doesn't bother you or it went over your head.
"Do you mind?" You don't give him time to answer as you slip the key from his right hand with ease, ignoring the hot to touch metal of it before you wiggle the key in. Shimming it just right, listening with your perked ear and jiggling the handle, lifting before hitting the door with your shoulder.
A soft oof leaves your pretty lips and Bakugou's chest tightens. He's about to berate you out of habit until you turn around, opening the door wider for him without stepping over the threshold.
"Welcome home.♡" You say it so sweetly that it costs his tongue, dripping down the back of his throat where it forms into an unexpected lump.
He can't remember the last time he'd been welcome home by anything other than an angry reporter or a screaming cellphone demanding answers for his actions. His correct actions.
Because the fuck did those dumb ass pencil pushers know when it came to being out in the field?
Jack fuckin shit that's what they knew.
That's why he was standing in the USA, in the middle of winter, in one of the coldest fucking states and biggest fucking cities.
Why he was standing in this apartment that reeked of cheap cigarettes.
Why he was standing in this hallway, facing a woman he'd nearly blown up by accident, daydreaming about you opening that door every day for the rest of his hellish 730 days.
Swallowing thickly, unable to alleviate the tightness of his throat forcing him to grunt out "Thanks."
Shoulder checking you as he shoves into his apartment. But you were in a city full of rude assholes, so your neighbor being one would be no surprise.
"See ya around, hot head."
Bakugou slams the door on your words and it rattles the whole floor from the force. Dark eyes boring holes into the dingy, nicotine stained walls.
Kitchen, small and open to the living area, a sagging couch and groaning refrigerator. Katsuki was sure the oven being simply plugged in was a fire hazard on its own. Hardwood floors were thin, showing scuffed nail heads indicating it had been sanding three times too many in a poor attempt to save money and a portion stained a suspicious ruddy brown in a massive organic shape.
The bedroom and bathroom were no better, cleaned in a rush if at all and on the window sill there is a fresh coat of white paint forever trapping dead flies in the latex.
"What the fuck…" He swore he'd find a convenience store, getting cleaning supplies among other things but first he needed to lie down. Exhaustion hits him as he thinks of how difficult it was going to be to find another apartment and to break this lease. This place being the only complex with a last minute opening and for an astronomical price just for it to be another shit hole in his life.
He doesn't even bother with the stained mattress, picking it up and shoving it into the hallway to lean against the other, knowing full well all of this furniture was found the same god damn way. Shoved in and dressed up for shoddy pictures with half the view of the room blocked my wrinkled white finger tips.
He throws his two towels on the floor of the bedroom, using his bag for a pillow getting the worst sleep of his fucking life.
Even worse than when he and Deku had to share a single sleeping bag on an undercover mission in the middle of a snow storm.
But not before he orders absolutely everything that he can to make this place semi liveable, even if he didn't think he'd be here more than a month.
Morning comes with the loud slam of a door and a heated argument, making him sit straight up, both palms burning bright orange. Remnants of his dreams that always lead him astray.
Of eighteen years ago, his puncture scars ache from the memory before the one along his face and arm grows numb. Tingling numb and yet it feels as if fire ants let their pinchers sink into his tender flesh and root around in his eye socket.
Before the one on his sternum heats, expanding as he takes a deep calming breath making the cartilage crack from the inhale. It does little to qualm it and he just cracks his neck, forever used to waking up with adrenaline in his veins, threatening to explode his fragile heart.
The thought makes his stomach churn, normally a cold shower would do him good but the idea of standing under the stagnant shower head made it far worse. Skin crawling as he rises to grab supplies for his apartment before his evening would be eaten up by whoever the hell he was meeting.
His phone chiming with a reminder of unread messages, several in the group chat of well wishes and hoping you made it before he replies.
Fuck all of you.
He locks his phone after putting it on do not disturb before killing his entire morning, getting almost lost in a city very much like his home.
He's thankful he was studious growing up. That he can read and speak English well. His face covered in a mask and his spiky blonde hair shoved under a dark beanie makes navigating the city after one missed stop easy.
People left him well enough alone and he found his way back to his apartment on the first try. Most would call it luck but Bakugou would call it skill. Obsessive observation more like it.
Scrubbing at the hardwood and apartment felt as if he was scrubbing away the grime that stuck to the edges of his mind. Some parts of the floor he could get so shiny they reflected his own smug scarred smirk and others, like that blotchy stain, blood stain, just wouldn't come out no matter how hard he tried.
No matter what solution or tool he used.
Nothing worked, leaving him frustrated, covered in flaking wood stain and smelling like rust.
He checks his phone to see his shipments will be late and growls, asking himself what's the point of scheduling a time before he showers and heads out again.
The rundown warehouse he finds himself in front of gives him a dreadful sense of deja vu. As if he's transported back to yesterday, standing outside the apartment complex. He can feel eyes on him again, to the right of him.
But he knows no one is around, nothing but a stray cat that runs away from the old building to chase the flock of seagulls.
He double checks the address in the email sent from the hero commission and rolls his eyes. Shoving his hands with his phone in his pockets as he figured they let some lacky type out the address instead of concerning themselves with the hot head anymore.
He's about to turn on his heel and leave when the metal door swings open.
Curiosity was a deadly thing.
Slinking in, quiet as a cat, despite his brash and bold quirk. Having learned the hard way that sometimes subtlety is the only way. His eye adjusts quickly to the dark, sunlight bleeding in through the rotted roof and the windows that weren't boarded up. His ears perk as he listens, willing his heart to quiet and slow before that odd sensation settles in his bones. Hairs standing on end as if something were breathing on his neck.
But the puff of air never comes.
They say your body always knows when someone lays eyes on you, even when you're asleep.
It only took Bakugou losing one of his eyes to believe it.
Someone was standing in his blind spot.
Instinctively he turns, over and over in a circle and nothing ever comes into sight. He cannot hear what is there and he cannot see it but he knows something stands right outside his field of vision.
Like trying to meet face to face with the shadows that only grow in the corner of one's eye and when you look directly at it is when it disappears.
Sure as he's fucking breathing someone loomed and stalked just within reach although fully out of sight.
Each turn clenches his jaw tighter and tighter. More and more pent up anger as his hand glows on its own.
Once known as the best in the game for quirk control was now actively, and often, experiencing quirk failure.
He hears a pillar crack and then another and another until he's standing in the middle of the room with groaning concrete slabs compromised long before he came in.
"Fuck." He hisses, watching the trap reveal itself in real time before the building caved in from its own weight.
Subconsciously Bakugou knew there was symbolism in here somewhere. It felt a lot like he did, holding up a crumbling career for what he didn't know.
He only had his mother and father as family. His friends were successful and no longer needed his help in anything aside from maybe dating advice. Which was stupid, Bakugou was always the one getting broken up with but in his defense he didn't even know they were dating. He always assumed they knew he needed nothing more than to get his dick wet.
As the building collapses he sends out small bursts to keep himself from getting crushed and from sending debris flying out within a ten mile radius.
It's only when the dust settles does he feel someone in his blind spot again, except this time they step out of it before he can react.
"Let fear and anger be a source of power without consuming you." A woman shorter than him and only five or so years older, stood before him. Long graying hair placed up in a neat, smooth bun, contrasting against her dark jumpsuit. More notably are her milky eyes that hold onto his gaze without seeing anything at all.
Her demeanor and voice make his scars burn. Makes him think back of his first therapist he had to see twice a week until he was 22 to keep his gnawing anger in check.
The very one that laid at his feet in the form of bent rebar and heavy concrete.
"Fuck was that?" He dusts off his shoulders, "If I wanted vague advice I could have read it in a fuck all subreddit."
She says nothing, just listens to him shuffle as he moves around, knowing exactly where he is from the sound and the feel of her bare feet on the solid concrete floor.
"And how much is this fuckin building gonna cost me?" He growls to himself, only the third he's EVER unintentionally damaged. His first day as a hero in America already wasn't looking so great.
"Nothing."
"Haaah, ya get brick and mortar blasted into your ears? Buildings don't cost nothing."
"Normally yes, it would cost something. Even one as dilapidated as this. But the city had plans to tear it down, I just saved them money on the explosives." She smiles, knowing that now Katsuki would catch on. She read his file, the braille didn't lie, he was quick to catch on but faster to temper.
"So you knew I'd blow this shit hole to hell?" He snarls, hates being so predictable, it was as good as being fuckin stupid when it came to a fight.
"I did. Your file said you react when people stand in your blind spot. Why is that?"
"Isn't that fucking obvi-" His complaint dies in his throat when his gaze meets hers.
"You've had more than a decade to adjust, in fact it was as if you hadn't even lost vision in your right eye when you got out of the hospital. Only those close to you could see it bothered you."
"Yea like fucking who?"
"Like Izuku and Kirishima. Although it was subtle then it seems to be a bigger issue now. More than it was when the injury was fresh." A tremor of rage runs through his thick frame, his mind bringing him back to putting the stinging eye drops into his dying eye, hoping he could keep some semblance of vision but soon those blurry blobs faded into nothing but inky black.
He can practically feel the stinging now, and the gauze pulling at his fresh skin, of the fish scales they tried to use to help with the decay.
How the doctors murmured they might have to amputate his crushed and twisted arm, sedating him after his violent outburst. Unwilling to give up half his quirk so young.
Although some could argue a misfiring arm was far more dangerous than a little chrome.
He scoffs, looking down at his right palm from what was at one point his non dominant eye.
"So fuckin what. I'm Dynamight. I always bounce back." He lets the I have to lodge in his throat.
"Hmm so they say." She hums, tapping her foot twice before she speaks again, "You're a good size you know with a great range. Not to mention your sixth sense is phenomenal for someone who shoves things down."
"I don't shove shit down."
"Then why do you explode? Why does it seem that your fresh nitroglycerin is at half life? So volatile so quickly." She presses on when he doesn't speak, "You know I wasn't always blind either. My quirk grew in strength at the price of my sight, however it seems your body is more adaptable than mine. Your hearing is excellent despite the deafening explosions you create but you never know when that could be lost. So your homework is-"
"Homework?" He interrupts, turning to face her before he feels something in his blind spot again, turning quickly to be greeted with a hissing cat from his sudden movement. Back arched and swiping before it runs off.
"Yes, homework."
"M here to do hero work." He stalks closer to her, standing well within her personal space.
"No, you're here to heal." She doesn't even flinch, just tilts her head up towards him out of habit to keep eye contact.
"Cut this sappy bullshit. This ain't a Hallmark movie where I come to a new country. Get yet another fucking mentor that talks to me in riddles that I somehow get and then fall in love with my next door neighbor." He growls, "Wake up this is fuckin reality. I'm here to do hero shit, you're here to send me back in three months."
She laughs at that, "Three months is impossible even for you, overachiever."
He glares down at her, holding his breath to count down from ten and then up when his temper still burns in his veins.
"Your homework will be to listen. Not with your ears but-" She taps her finger over his old scar that sits over his heart, "Here."
Bakugou thought it was a bunch of bullshit. Listen to his body? His fucking heart? Didn't she hear of him before? The media was sure to remind Bakugou that he was nothing but a heartless, selfish asshole. So what the fuck was listening to his heart going to do?
But what other choice does Bakugou have?

right, by popular demand (a request from @washerdryer), I'm following up this post and just giving a few more details for what you can watch out for to start distinguishing tennis players in your head. how to differentiate the hoards, basically - what makes each tennis player unique. so I've split this up in three basic levels: the numbers, the units, and the shapes
the numbers
so, let's just simplify tennis playstyles as much as it is possible to simplify them, and say we have two types of players: the offensive ones and the defensive ones. the bashers and the pushers. one wants to finish the points on their own racquet, the other one just wants to get the ball back often enough. winning a tennis point is about getting the ball into the court one more time than your opponent. what this means is you can win a point either by putting the ball into a position the opponent can't get it back from, or by waiting until your opponent makes a mistake
when tennis points are coded for purposes of generating stats, point finishes can fall into one of three basic categories:
winner: a ball you hit into the court that the opponent's racquet does not touch, to cleanly win you the point (also includes aces)
unforced errors: a ball you hit that does not make it to your opponent's court, when you could have been expected to make that ball (also includes double faults)
forced errors: a ball you hit that does not make it to your opponent's court, when you have been put under enough duress to 'force' the error
now, you may be wondering how we distinguish between unforced and forced errors, which... it's complicated... it's basically a question of time. if the player had time to reach the ball, if they were in a position on the court where they could hit that ball within a relatively comfortable hitting zone, if they were in a neutral or an offensive position rather than a defensive one, then it's unforced. obviously, this isn't an objective measure, and sometimes whoever is logging in the points is like... either WAY too harsh or far far too generous.... but as a general metric, it's not the worst place to start. now, typically we only get numbers of winners and unforced errors (unless it's a fan-charted match, which we'll get to in a sec), but obviously you can infer the number of forced errors at least. even these basic stats aren't a bad starting point. if someone is playing offensively and taking more risk, it would logically follow that their counts of winners and unforced errors are both higher than for someone playing defensively, right?
let's bring in two players I thought of off the top of my head, and luckily they did not disappoint me here. kasatkina on the left and ostapenko on the right at wimbledon 2021 (this is from flashscore btw):
Tumblr media
in the end, penko won this three set match. she won somewhat more points than her opponents - and outperformed her opponent in both service points and return points. what else can these numbers tell us?
well, first of all, penko managed to hit 48 winners vs dasha's *pinches nose* 11. so she tended to play more offensively, or was certainly more effective in doing so. on the flip side, penko hit 48 unforced errors to dasha's 24 - her high risk style inevitably generated more errors than dasha's low risk approach. obviously, in this case that approach took her to victory, despite finishing on double the amount of unforced errors as her opponent. sometimes, the difference between winners and unforced errors is treated as some kind of brute force measure of a match's 'quality' which... I don't love, but of course it's generally a good thing if you're clocking in more winners than unforced errors. dasha ends on (-13) and penko ends on (0), and penko ended up winning the match
what else can we take from this? well, penko came to the net more - and tended to have a very good success rate there. this is a super super rough metric, but I generally feel you want about two thirds success at the net at least, since more often than not you're approaching the net when you're on the offensive and should be winning points. so, y'know, 13 isn't a crazy amount of total net points but it's still fundamentally a job well done. some players don't approach the net at all - and of course it's also reflective of the fact dasha generally wasn't getting herself into positions during the match where she could get to the net. given penko's playstyle, most points will have be conducted on her racquet, where either she bullies around dasha to make an error or she makes an error herself. she's not giving dasha the time to construct rallies in a way that would let dasha gradually navigate herself to the net
and then, of course, there's the most glaring numbers of them all: the serve/return numbers. *pinches nose again* okay. so obviously, the serve is supposed to be a weapon, and especially on grass it is common enough to see 80%, 90% of service points won (if more so on the men's side). these two icons don't believe in that kind of thing, and have even managed to win more points on return than on serve on the most serve-friendly surface. given dasha's impressive returning and her very not impressive serving, I'm guessing this was mainly her fault. there's also a lot of people who will conflate a lot of breaks of serve with a match being 'bad', but those people lack taste. nobody likes a servebot
now, we can add more numbers into the equation. and yes, this is a lot of numbers, but it's all actually quite straightforward, don't run away, we're not going through all of them. this is from ryba vs krej, the wimbledon semi we just had, and is submitted as part of the volunteer-driven match charting project at tennis abstract. what you're seeing are elena's shot types:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so. what you're seeing here is every single shot rybakina hit in that match, and what the result of each and every single one of them was. rybakina hit 257 total shots - of them, 32% ended the point in some way. of those 32%, you get a further breakdown between winners, 11%, forced errors, 8%, and unforced errors, 15%. she hits 133 on the forehand side, and 124 on the backhand - and she was more likely to finish a point on the forehand side than on the backhand side. this is what we would EXPECT to see: for 99% of players, the forehand is a bigger weapon than the backhand. that doesn't mean the forehand is better, and it is often more liable to generating errors, but you can hit the ball harder on that side. the numbers here beyond that are actually a bit quirky... unsurprisingly, rybs was hitting more forehand winners than backhand winners, but in terms of errors the big disparity was in the forced errors tally. now, honestly I don't remember this match enough so this may be bullshit - but just looking at the numbers, my initial guess is that rybs was being forced to run into the forehand corner a lot and krej was extracting errors that way
there's a lot of other details you CAN look at here, but also ryba makes it easy for us by conducting most of her shots from the baseline. 'gs' here stands for 'groundstrokes' so... literally any shot that hits the ground first. she barely went to the net, she wasn't doing much slicing or dropshotting. (I notice the coder made one of her forehand dropshots a forced error, which... I can kinda see how that happens, but to me almost all dropshots are unforced.) some normal volleys, some 'swinging' volleys - also called topspin volleys, which basically looks like your normal groundstroke but without the bit where it touches the ground first
let's quickly bring in what krej was doing:
Tumblr media
so, only 23% of shots are point ending, which is what you'd broadly expect - ryba is one of the players with the biggest firepower so she will generally be doing more point ending on her racquet. similarly to ryba, krej has a slight skew to the forehand side, and also has a strong skew towards staying at the baseline. the main thing I'm a teensy bit curious about is how krej ended up with 9 lobs and ryba with only one smash because like?? rybakina is very tall?? but also krej is the prime moonballer on tour, so if that was correctly coded then well done to her lol. the only other thing I wanted to point out is the kind of quirk you can spot through these numbers - krej is one of the big users of the forehand slice in the game, which tends to be an extremely uncommon shot, but she uses 24 times. ryba's 12 also actually feels quite high, but it's also more common to slice when you're getting a slice so that MAY be part of it
tennis has many more numbers that tells you many more things about the matches you're watching - like for instance serve efficacy and how your win % compares on the first serve to the second serve, how often you're getting your first serve in, how often it's an ace, an unreturned serve, a double fault... you'll build up a bit of a frame of reference over time for what counts as 'good' or 'bad' numbers. but, yeah, if one player is hitting a lot of winners and unforced errors and the other one isn't, you can draw some basic conclusions about what kind of player you're watching
the units
okay, so you've got the numbers, which you can also check during matches and will be provided on screen between sets. now we get to the bit where you're actually watching tennis. you basically what to figure out what units, what bits a player's game is composed of. everyone has a serve, everyone has a return, everyone has a forehand and a backhand - but what are they doing with them? how are they using them? where do they tend to win points and where do they tend to lose them? again, part of this will just be about paying attention to what the commentators tell you and try to see if you can spot it for yourself. here are like, some of the basic questions you can watch out for... many you don't need to immediately just spot, but just so you know this is something that is possible to notice:
are they a good server? very tall? good at 'hitting their spots'? do they double fault a lot? can they mix up the spins of their serve - the kick serve (literally kicks up) or slice (slides away from the opponent)? how's their ace rate? how good are they at 'disguising' their serve direction? is it easy to attack their second serve?
how about their return? is there something funky about their return position, are they standing too close or too far away? (most players will be a little bit behind the baseline.) do they change their position depending on whether they're returning first or second serve (typically but not always you'll be closer for the second)? do they get a lot of returns into play? can they attack the second serve? how good are they at 'reading' the opponent's serve?
are they more of an attacking player who attempts to generate their own offence and dominate the point, or a defensive player who is responding to what the opponent is doing and are trying to force them into a mistake? are they a counterpuncher (aka a player who can turn defence into offence)? are they 'aggressive' with their court positioning by standing further forwards? or are they retreating, buying themselves time?
where are they looking to finish points? are they a baseliner and are operating from the back of the court? are they an all courter? are they looking to come in and attack at the net? how's their forecourt game? how are their volleys? do they ever serve and volley (aka immediately follow in the serve to hit the first ball from the net)?
how are their two wings - the forehand and the backhand? how good are they at generating offence from either side? how good are they at defending from either side? is there one side where they're good at hitting 'on the run' shots but not the other? is there one side (typically the forehand) where they can generate more pace but are also more likely to make errors? can they rally consistently from both wins?
what about their variety? now, variety is a bit of a catch all term that describes how many dimensions their game has - but a lot of times it does kinda just mean 'can they slice and volley'. a slice has a different type of spin from your basic ground strokes - especially on the backhand side, it's an important defensive tool, not least to slow the ball down, but can also used offensively. are all the balls they're hitting kinda similar in terms of speed and height and spin? or can they hit their shots flatter, can they change up the spin with slices... can they get forwards and sprinkle in volleys, can they integrate different shots like the dropshot into their game? can they hit high moonballs and find short angles? or is it all just 'see ball bash ball'
how good a mover are they? both in terms of outright speed, up the court and side to side, but also how their balance is, how good they are at anticipating where the opponent will hit the ball, and do on... how flexible are they, can they reach even the unlikeliest balls? how's their endurance? can they defend point after point game after game, or do they eventually falter?
what are they like mentally? do they fold every time they're facing break point? can they actually convert their chances? what are they like at crunch time - late in sets, in tiebreaks, in deciding sets? do they choke away leads? are they clutch under pressure? can they serve out sets and matches?
how do they think they're going to win this match? what's their approach, what's the strategy, what tactics are they deploying, can they adjust these to the match situation? are you watching a player who's thinking their way through rallies, who's following a game plan, or are they just doing whatever?
these aren't questions you need to be engaging with every time you watch a tennis match but, again, they're questions you can ask yourself. not as tricky as it looks!!
the shapes
okay. you get the numbers, you know how the match quite literally is playing out. you've watched the points and can spot what they're actually doing to generate those numbers. now let's go one step further: how are these 'units' being produced? why is it that some serves are better than others? what makes different forehands produce different effects? what makes someone a good mover?
now, obviously, this is like. a massive topic, and I'm not going to give an intro to tennis technique here. but what you really want to do, especially at the start, is spot variance. the photos I included at the top of this post are all from players with techniques that immediately jump out at you for being WEIRD. snigur's forehand looks weird (it's like she's swinging a pan). delbonis' serve looks weird (bizarrely high ball toss). norrie's backhand looks weird (like he's trying to stab someone). obviously, to some extent you can only do this through brute force watching tennis to give yourself a kind of internal, instinctual understanding of what the 'average' shot looks like... but you can also kickstart this process
the thing is, right, you can say that all technique is very complicated, but at the end of the day what it boils down to is you have the bit that happens before they hit the ball, the bit where they're hitting the ball, and the bit after they're hitting the ball. usually, what tennis viewers are responding to when they're watching the sport is some kind of flash aesthetic judgement of that racquet motion. is it a 'short' or a 'long' motion? you can be super concise and compressed with your motion, and only quickly slash at the ball in a direct path, or you can draw a massive loop with your arm like you're simulating a windmill where, after yanking it in a bunch of directions, eventually you make contact with the ball... where is the racquet at the point of contact? generally speaking it should be in front of the body, though how close or far it is can vary quite a lot. and where does the racquet go afterwards?
let's bring in a straightforward example, and check out the forehand techniques of the two most recent women's slam champs - krej on the left and iga on the right
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
at point of contact, krej has her arm completely extended, while iga's elbow is bent. both are entirely acceptable way of hitting your forehand!! it obviously means both need to move differently to the ball to make sure it's at their preferred distance
if you look at iga's arm, you may also notice all the... bits are kinda pointing in different ways? what you might notice if you watch her a bit is that she draws quite the loop with her forehand, and that a lot of her arm seems to be moving a lot during the stroke. the underlying 'reason' for that is she has quite an extreme forehand grip (called the 'western' grip) which means that the way she holds her racquet essentially requires her to twist around her wrist to make contact with it. so, what's the benefit? why are you doing weird shit with your wrist while hitting the ball? well, iga's forehand also has a lot of topspin - the sharp wrist movement applies an intensive amount of spin to the ball that makes it fly high over the net and bounce high on the other side of the court. it's a very spin-intensive forehand grip - she WHIPS the racquet up to make that ball rotate a shit ton
now, obviously you don't need to get all that just looking at a clip of a player hitting a shot. it's more just... stuff to start paying attention to. how much they're using their arms. how much they're bending their knees. where their racquet is in relation to their body when they hit it. how big the steps they're taking are to get across the court
in conclusion
in conclusion. have fun watching the matches!!

Fluidvesil is an identity under the vesil umbrella where fluidity and being fluid affect most parts or all of your identity. Examples of identities that might link into this are genderfluid, genderflux, abrosexual, ace-/aroflux, nomifluid, pronounfluid, constelic or kinfluid. (You do not have to identify with these!)
A link to the vesility coining post is here ⬇️
From this point down it may be a bit of a vent post 😅
For me, personally, it's defined by the feeling that whenever I discover something about myself, it turns out to be fluid and impermanent. I'm genderfluid, have multiple names, am constelic and am aldernicfluid (?). I stick to barebones labels because it's difficult to find things I constantly relate to. My interests, personality and beliefs are constantly evolving at a fast rate, and it feels like something ties this all together. So, fluidvesil!

Into the Eye of the Storm
Three years ago, Morgan sealed the space-time rift above Hisui and saved the universe. Three years later, space-time distortions continue to plague the land - and Morgan's doing what she can to slow down the tide.
Fandom: Pokémon, Pokémon Legends: Arceus
Rating: Teen
Genre: Action, Fantasy
Word Count: Approx. 4,400 words
Author's Note: This is a one-shot which I wrote up about a month ago, but today I'm deciding to take that terrifying step forward and publish it.
This fanfic doesn't quite star Akari, but it does star my own interpretation of the Legends Arceus MC. Basically, she's an OC who went through the events of Legends Arceus in lieu of a blank-slate protagonist, acting on and reacting to them her own way. And this story takes place about three years after the Temple of Sinnoh's destruction, and about two years after the final postgame mission; essentially, she's doing "post-postgame" stuff.
You can read it on AO3, or you can read it below the cut. I hope you enjoy!
----
Thunder boomed.
Within a split second, the Heracross charged forward like a bullet. Its horn glowed bronze with the energy of a Fighting-type attack; its red eyes glowered with killing intent at the human in its way.
And within a split second, the human dodged. With a practiced motion, expending no more energy than she needed to expend, she side-stepped out of the path of her certain doom.
Fury gave way to surprise. The Heracross couldn't stop its charge, having devoted too much of its momentum towards this one attack. And thanks to the dark purple glow of the energy dome which caged the Heracross and its opponent, it couldn't notice the bog it was headed for until it was too late.
The bog arrested its movement with a lurch and a splash. The Heracross snarled, pushing against the marshy water in a bid to quickly turn around.
It was too distracted by the bog to notice the human's counterattack.
With another practiced motion, the human pulled a red stone-and-wood ball out of her pocket, throwing it at the back of the occupied Heracross. It opened with a pop just before it could make contact with the frenzied Pokémon. And with a glow of blue light, the ball summoned forth another Pokémon: a predator of the night, perfect for sneak attacks and back strikes.
A Rowlet.
Sent out at point-blank range, and flying a safe distance above the bog, it wasted no time. It crashed down with an axe kick at the back of the Heracross' head, and immediately followed up with an upward kick.
Caught completely unawares, the Heracross had no chance to brace itself for the one-two punch of Rowlet's Aerial Ace. It cried out, before stumbling forward in a daze, trying to look for its enemy and where they came from.
Frenzied and enraged thoughts filled its head. This super-effective blow would have knocked out any ordinary Heracross, but it wasn't an ordinary Heracross. It was an alpha Pokémon, twice the size of its kin, blessed with primordial power and wild might. It wasn't out of the fight just yet. Once it found its enemy, it would have its vengeance.
But its blind rage sealed its fate, as the human capitalized on her partner Pokémon's attack. She pulled out another ball from her satchel - this one black and painted with gold patterns - and threw it at the Heracross' back. The Heracross cried out again as the ball hit it and then opened up, forcing it to shrink, drawing it inside before closing shut.
The ball fell into the bog with a splash. It weakly jumped up into the air, before a miniscule firework flew out from a metal vent on its top.
The Rowlet looked back at the human and chirped. The human nodded as she pressed the metal latch on the red ball, upon which the Rowlet shrank into energy and returned to the contraption.
The human pocketed her Rowlet's ball, then adjusted her flat blue cap. She took a step forward towards the bog containing her new Heracross' ball, but stopped when she heard the sound of ball lightning.
Four bursts of purple lightning crackled around her. Four new Pokémon suddenly appeared within the energy dome: a Luxio, a Floatzel, a Snorlax, and a Flareon.
While none of their eyes glowed red like the Heracross' did, they each glared at the human with hostility. They encircled her within a ten-meter radius; instinctively, she knew that she had no choice but to fight them all at once.
The human knew that it would be unwise to rely only on her agility and tools against these adversaries; she would need her Pokémon's support to take them down. At the same time, she knew that her Pokémon couldn't shield her from all of these aggressors at once; she would have to remain vigilant and dodge any errant attacks that would come her way.
And, of course, she remained aware that the distortion could summon new Pokémon at a moment's notice.
Illuminated by the purple glow of the space-time distortion, the human reached into her pocket again. This time, she pulled out a blue ball, painted with a pair of red stripes.
The four hostile Pokémon glared, ready to attack at the first sign of provocation.
Morgan raised the Great Ball containing her Garchomp, ready to dodge and counterattack at the first sign of a Pokémon's move.
Above them, the hole in reality flared a hostile white.
Thunder boomed.
----
"I assume that you two should know why I summoned you here," Cyllene said, looking up at Morgan and Rei from behind her office desk.
"...Not exactly, ma'am," Rei responded from his position of attention. Both he and Cyllene were clad in the standard Galaxy Team Survey Corps uniform: a blue kimono, shortened so that their trouser-clad legs could move freely in the field. Rei had garnished his uniform with a red cap and scarf, in contrast to Cyllene wearing the same basic uniform as her grunts. "I'm not sure about Morgan's summons, but mine were left vague about what they were for."
Cyllene looked over at Morgan, who was also standing at attention. Morgan's clothing was different: she wore a thicker black shortened kimono and blue snow pants, complemented with a flat blue cap. Her long blonde hair flowed behind her; somehow, she never found it a problem despite how often she found herself in motion.
Three years ago, when Morgan was seventeen, she wore the same uniform as the rest of the Survey Corps. But after a desperate battle left both her and her uniform torn and bloodied, she instead elected to wear prototype protective equipment devised by the Supply Corps' R&D, and never changed back.
Cyllene and Kamado decided to allow it. Everyone in Hisui knew who Morgan was at this point - for better or for worse.
Blue eyes locked with blue eyes, as Morgan looked back at her captain.
"Do you know, Morgan?" Cyllene asked.
"If I were to make a guess, ma'am, it has something to do with the space-time distortions," Morgan said, a practiced sense of formality underlying her words. "In particular, the frequency of their appearances."
Cyllene nodded. "That is correct, Morgan. Three years ago, you forged the Red Chain of old, and Rei forged it anew." She looked over at Rei, before turning back to Morgan. "And with the twice-forged chain, you closed the space-time rift which threatened us all."
A desperate battle, Cyllene silently noted to herself, before continuing.
"And yet, the rift's effects linger. The space-time distortions it has left in its wake have not diminished over the past three years, but have instead increased in frequency. And the rift's lingering Noble Energy has beckoned aggressive Pokémon who desire to feast on it." She paused, looking over at Morgan and Rei, as if waiting for one of them to finish her sentence.
Morgan spoke up before Rei did, as if in reflex. "The massive mass outbreaks. Am I correct, ma'am?"
Cyllene nodded again. "These outbreaks contain a disproportionately high number of aggressive Pokémon, alpha or otherwise. They threaten our base camps, as well as the settlements of the Diamond and Pearl Clans. Furthermore, while Jubilife Village has yet to be afflicted by any such outbreak, we fear that the increase in aggressive Pokémon will only impede the village's developing human-Pokémon relations."
Her gaze settled on Morgan's neutral expression. Cyllene tried to conceal her small pang of emotion, but still frowned ever-so-slightly.
Then, everything she's been through in Hisui will all be for nothing.
"Permission to speak, ma'am?" Rei said, breaking the small silence.
"Granted," Cyllene quickly responded, turning back to him.
Rei nodded. "The professor's been busy. He's trying to make sure that his family in Galar is okay, since the revolution's still simmering down. The new government seems better than the king, but he wants to be 100% sure."
Morgan looked over at Rei, her expression still neutral.
"But - he left a theory in his notes," Rei continued. "Do you know about that, ma'am?"
Cyllene nodded. "I do. Professor Laventon's hypothesis is that wild Pokémon summoned via space-time distortions act as a vector for the specific energy that attracts massive mass outbreaks. Only a small percent of summoned Pokémon remain stranded in this era when a distortion vanishes, so this energy wasn't a problem when the distortions first appeared. But with the distortions appearing more frequently, this energy spreads more thoroughly across Hisui's biomes. This not only results in unnatural weather like heavy rain, but it also creates massive mass outbreaks."
Morgan's eyes ever-so-slightly widened, as if she realized what Cyllene wanted them to do.
Cyllene noticed this, but kept speaking. "That's why I've summoned you two. I want you to test this hypothesis of Professor Laventon's. You are to hunt for space-time distortions across Hisui, and try to minimize the number of wild Pokémon that escape them. Defeat them, catch them - do whatever you must, but try to reduce the number that can escape into Hisui's wilds. If you can reduce that number, then hopefully we can reduce the number of outbreaks.
"This is a dangerous mission," she continued. "It's classified because the lower-ranked members of the Survey Corps are not skilled enough to undertake it, and I won't let them unnecessarily risk their lives. On the contrary, you are two of the strongest Pokémon wielders in the Galaxy Team, so you should be able to fend for yourselves. Are my orders clear?"
"Yes, ma'am," Morgan and Rei responded in unison. Morgan nodded, confirming to Cyllene that she assumed correctly about the mission's nature.
Cyllene nodded. "I'm counting on you. Dismissed."
Morgan gave a salute, still maintaining her neutral professional expression, before turning around and leaving through the doors of Cyllene's office. Rei saluted as well, preparing to follow Morgan.
"Rei," Cyllene spoke up.
Rei stopped and turned around. "Yes, ma'am?"
"I doubt Morgan will allow you to directly assist her on this mission," Cyllene said. "She works most efficiently in the field without the assistance of other people, only with her Pokémon. But..."
Rei remained silent, his expression softening.
"But she should not have to bear our burdens all by herself, whether they be big or small. She's done enough of that for us. If you can gather ample data for this experiment, I'll promote your rank by a star."
Rei nodded, smiling somewhat somberly.
"You can count on me, ma'am."
----
Morgan was beginning to get tired.
Her first few attempts at corralling space-time Pokémon refugees were abject failures. After receiving her orders from Cyllene, she lay in wait in the Alabaster Icelands, talking with Irida, until her Arc Phone alerted her to a space-time distortion. Because the majority of distortion-summoned Pokémon would be sent back to whence they came, Morgan figured that she could just wait outside the distortion until it ended, and then catch the Pokémon that remained.
In theory, it sounded flawless. In practice, it just resulted in multiple Rapidash, Raichu, Scyther, and Glaceon fleeing into the tundra before Morgan even had the chance to approach them.
After two of these failures over the span of 12 hours, Morgan changed her plan. She would simply deal with the Pokémon in the space-time distortions the old-fashioned way: by drawing their ire and aggression. Either she would catch these aggressive Pokémon, using the stabilizing properties of Poké Balls to eliminate the hypothetical Noble Energy coursing through their bodies; or she would have her own Pokémon knock them out, upon which the distortion would send them back to where and when they came from.
Or they would maul her to death, which thankfully had yet to happen.
Morgan decided to try this out in the Crimson Mirelands, thanks to a Security Corps report that the area was apparently getting even more distortions than normal. And the scouts were right about that: the space-time distortion that Morgan was currently fighting her way through was the second one she entered within two hours.
Fighting through the first distortion was a simple enough endeavor. It was a non-stop gauntlet where she and her team had to ward off dozens of hostile Pokémon, but they outlasted it. After three and a half years in Hisui's frontier, they were used to distortions.
So she figured that the second distortion, appearing less than an hour later on the other side of the Crimson Mirelands, would be just as simple. At first, it was; she was able to subdue and catch several Pokémon, including an alpha Heracross, with only minimal help from the Pokémon in her party.
But despite her borderline supernatural dexterity and reflexes, Morgan was still human.
And humans get tired.
Even as the melee went on, she still accounted for all of the Pokémon and attacks she saw heading her way. The Snorlax fired a Hyper Beam from its mouth; she sent out her alpha Gallade to block the attack with his body, counting on his natural resilience against ranged attacks to let him weather it. With her Gallade occupying this enemy, Morgan caught her breath and fought off the ache of her muscles, devoting her attention towards two Floatzel with hostile intent.
One Floatzel prepared what looked like either a Water Pulse or a Hydro Pump in its mouth. Morgan wasted no time and threw two green Sticky Globs into its face, one after the other, dazing it and interrupting its attack. She then charged towards the Floatzel and threw a jet-black Gigaton Ball at close range, which drew it in. The ball closed shut, hopped once on the ground, and gave a small firework which indicated a successful catch.
The other Floatzel surged towards her with a near-supersonic Aqua Jet, but she deftly rolled out of the way, striking it in the back with another Gigaton Ball the instant it passed her. The ball drew in the surprised Floatzel, before closing shut and creating a firework as well.
Morgan exhaled, looking back at her Pokémon. Her Gallade knocked out the Snorlax with a one-two Drain Punch, causing the large Pokémon to vanish in a flash of purple ball lightning. Gallade let out a triumphant cry, before returning to his Great Ball in a flash of blue light, on standby to be called out again.
Off in the distance, her alpha Garchomp was much the same. She had already made short work of the Flareon and Luxio, and was now finishing off an alpha Luxray with an explosive Earth Power from beneath its feet. With a cry of defeat, the Luxray also vanished in a flash of lightning, returning to whence it came. Garchomp gave her own triumphant roar, before returning to her own Great Ball.
Because Morgan was starting to feel fatigued after hours of action, she was momentarily transfixed by her Pokémon's victories. As such, she didn't notice the Lopunny rocketing towards her with a High Jump Kick until it was too late.
She turned to face the Lopunny but was unable to dodge, so the kick impacted her in the abdomen, sending her flying. She tumbled across the ground, only stopping close to the space-time distortion's edge thanks to the peat in the ground slowing her down. She coughed, feeling the taste of blood in her mouth, before looking up in a daze.
The Lopunny wasn't alone. There were two of them, both slowly walking toward her, as if ready to finish her off.
And they were flanking a giant Porygon-Z, with the glowing red eyes indicative of a wild alpha.
Morgan grunted, gritting her teeth as she slowly and painfully pushed herself up.
The Porygon-Z stopped its erratic movement, a sign that it was preparing to attack. The energy of a Hyper Beam, far more luminous than that of the Snorlax, began to charge in its beak.
Morgan reached for one last Poké Ball in her pocket. With a yell, and without a moment's hesitation, she threw it.
The Porygon-Z fired, releasing the Hyper Beam, pouring all of its power into the attack. The beam's white-gold glow filled Morgan's vision, spelling her certain death.
But Morgan wasn't afraid.
The first thing she saw when her vision cleared was the Pokémon she managed to send out. Four-legged and over three meters tall, its white and gold form stood in front of its Trainer, using its body as a shield to protect her. Its body showed extremely faint scorch marks; it had taken the full-force Hyper Beam on Morgan's behalf, and had only shown superficial damage.
It was the Original One. The first deity known as almighty Sinnoh. The Alpha Pokémon.
Its name was Arceus.
And it was here to defend its chosen champion.
The two Lopunny stopped in their tracks, wary of this new enemy. The Porygon-Z could not move, still recovering from the recoil of using Hyper Beam. Morgan took advantage of this reprieve and finally pushed herself up to her feet. With her thumb, she wiped away a streak of blood dripping down the side of her mouth.
She then glared at the three hostile Normal-type Pokémon, vocalizing a command.
"Judgment."
A glowing rectangular bronze tablet appeared floating above Arceus' head, as it glowed white for a brief moment. When the tablet and glow vanished, Arceus looked different: all the gold parts of its body were now reddish-brown, its green sclerae now yellow.
Raising its front legs, it then summoned a glowing orb of bronze energy above its head. Barrages of bronze homing energy missiles began to shoot out of this orb, intent on striking down the three hostile Pokémon.
Three of the energy missiles quickly struck one Lopunny, one after the other. It keeled over, fainting as it vanished into purple lightning. The other Lopunny dodged the first salvo, but it could not outpace the follow-up missiles, getting knocked out and banished as well.
With the two Lopunny gone, Arceus focused the rest of its Judgment beams on the Porygon-Z. More and more salvos of Fighting-type energy struck the strange futuristic Pokémon, its disconnected body parts getting knocked around as if glitched, before the orb itself dissolved into one final barrage which left a large explosion in its wake.
Morgan, clutching her abdomen, remained alert. She had a feeling that because Arceus divided its Judgment barrage across multiple Pokémon, the Porygon-Z may have endured the attack. It was a wild alpha, after all.
And she was right. Three beams of fire, ice, and lightning shot out of the smoke as it cleared, impacting Arceus. It didn't flinch, even as a burn formed on its body where it took the beam of fire.
The Porygon-Z was still intent on battle, floating defiantly even as its erratic movements slowed down from the critical damage it endured.
Morgan frowned. Removing her hand from her abdomen, she reached into her satchel and pulled out an Ultra Ball, throwing it at the red-eyed Virtual Pokémon.
The ball hit the weakened alpha Pokémon, pulling it in. It bounced once and let out a firework.
Porygon-Z was caught, and thus neutralized as a threat.
Morgan grimaced as she recalled Arceus into its Poké Ball. It had sustained a burn from that last Tri Attack, but burns on a Pokémon quickly healed themselves outside of battle.
The Arceus which she carried in her party was not the real thing, but a mere fragment, an avatar of a god. The real, incorporeal Arceus bestowed this avatar upon Morgan as a blessing, after she had saved the universe and sought out all Pokémon in Hisui on its behalf.
The avatar was not like Dialga or Palkia: it could not warp space or time, at least not on Morgan's command. And though it could wreak plenty of destruction, it could not wield the true Arceus' power of creation. Essentially, Morgan's Arceus was a god that willingly reduced itself to a powerful yet mortal Pokémon.
And while it was powerful, its attacks weren't very efficient. Though it could battle defensively for a very long time, using its strongest attack with abandon would quickly exhaust it. Even now, Arceus could only use Judgment two or three more times before it would need to recuperate at the Galaxy Team's base camps. Morgan wondered if that was Arceus' way of weakening itself, keeping its corporeal form in check so that Morgan would not neglect her other party Pokémon.
Either way, this meant that Arceus was a last resort during expeditions, so Morgan used it sparingly. She figured that getting cornered by those Lopunny and Porygon-Z was a desperate enough situation, but she didn't want to get lazy or complacent. Not like she just did.
Fighting down the pain of her injuries, but racing with adrenaline, Morgan remained on guard for any other Pokémon that the space-time distortion would summon. But the crack in the sky instead gave a loud whoosh, and the purple dome whirled with strong winds. A few seconds later, the distortion faded away, and the sky returned to its natural dusk gold.
Morgan exhaled, still gritting her teeth in pain. No wild Pokémon were in the area, so she figured now was as good a time as any to dress her wound. She walked over to a nearby rock, sitting down on it. Her clothes were already covered with peat from her bad landing after the Lopunny's kick, but she still didn't want to get them any dirtier than she needed to.
She removed the satchel wrapped around the sash of her short black kimono, putting it on the rock next to her. She then removed the sash, allowing her top to open. Her modesty was preserved by a sarashi wrapped around her chest, but the abs she developed from over three years of Survey Corps work were now exposed.
She shuddered a bit from the sudden chill on her body. Bracing herself on the rock with her right hand, Morgan felt her abdomen with her left. After a moment of feeling around, she winced.
Morgan couldn't see her abdomen from her current position, but she was absolutely sure that it had a large bruise. Her Cascoon-silk kimono had done its job and softened the High Jump Kick enough that it most likely didn't break any of her bones, but it evidently didn't stop everything.
And where there was bruising, there was internal bleeding.
She thought of a morbid joke from someone she used to know. Internal bleeding ain't so bad, they laughed, 'cause my blood's supposed to be inside of me! Morgan almost chuckled at that memory, but stopped as she wondered if they were just downplaying the injury they suffered that day.
Besides, that person was in her past now.
Still supporting herself with her right hand, Morgan used her left to root through her satchel. After a few moments, she pulled out a glass jar filled with a petroleum jelly-like substance, its label reading "Super Potion." These topical balms worked miracles on wounds sustained by Pokémon, but they could still heal humans to a somewhat lesser degree. Morgan made liberal use of Potions on herself, to help offset the wounds that she would inevitably sustain while in the field.
Morgan opened the Potion jar, scooping out some of the ointment with her fingers, and then applied it onto where she felt the bruise. She winced again at a sudden surge of pain, but exhaled when she felt the balming, numbing effect of the Potion kick in. Even if she couldn't see the bruise, she could tell that it was beginning to fade. The ointment would take some time to fully take effect, but it would help her blood vessels repair themselves.
She sighed, looking around as she slowly closed her kimono. There were nine Poké Balls scattered across the peatland, each one containing a Pokémon she caught in the space-time distortion: an Eevee, a Quilava, an Umbreon, two Luxio, the alpha Heracross, the two Floatzel, and the alpha Porygon-Z. If Laventon were still on duty, he would say that he was proud of her.
As she put on her kimono's sash, followed by her satchel, she entertained the idea that maybe she could leave the Poké Balls there for now, and pick them up later. Maybe she could take a moment away from her mission. Maybe she could take a moment to relax.
That moment was interrupted by the buzz of the Arc Phone in her pocket. She looked at it, and frowned.
According to the Arc Phone's map, a third space-time distortion was beginning to form in the Crimson Mirelands, once again on the other side of the area.
If Irida was here, she would tell Morgan to stop and take a break. That she didn't have to throw herself into every single dangerous mission that the Galaxy Team gave her, while refusing the help of the rest of the Survey Corps, all just to prove some vague point to nobody.
Unfortunately for Irida, she wasn't here. And Morgan felt like proving a vague point, her fatigue and injuries be damned.
Morgan adjusted her hat, which managed to remain on her head throughout this entire ordeal, and then pushed herself up off the rock. She walked across the peatlands at a brisk pace, her stalwart posture and stride concealing the fact that she had just been injured, as she picked up each of the nine Poké Balls and put them in her satchel. She didn't plan on using them in battle, but she would still need to hold on to them until she could drop them off at Jubilife's pastures.
Once she put the Porygon-Z's Ultra Ball in her satchel, she looked up at the sky.
The sun was setting, and it was getting dark. But the night was still young.
Morgan pulled out the aptly-named Azure Flute from her satchel, and played two notes. In a flash of golden light, the Noble Braviary appeared before her, having answered the call of almighty Sinnoh's melody.
She lay prone on the hang-gliding apparatus that Braviary wore, and Braviary took to the skies.
"Let's go," Morgan told Braviary. "Into the eye of the storm."
And on her command, Braviary soared towards the thunder booming in the distance.

Top 5 best fights? Top 5 worst fights? In RWBY. Maybe split between the ones that are well/poorly choreographed and ones that are well/poorly written.
Right well generally when I'm looking at a fight I like to ask these things. Is the fight:
Well-Written (serves the plot/in character)
Well-Choreographed
Has the Funky Extra Stuff (music, setting, all the lil fx bits)
Does it make sense to happen in-universe beyond being ‘well rwby is a fighting anime so here’s a fight’ gif bait (like, was the lead up good or is it contrived, did it make sense to be duking it out, grimm just randomly showing up is acceptable in all cases because that's the point of them in-universe)
Entertaining to Watch
and if it gets like, 3 of those I'll consider it a good fight. 3 outta 5 is good. So here's my top 5, all of which I think are a 5/5 on this. I also decided to challenge myself by not picking multiple from each volume.
Top 5 Fights in RWBY, as judged by Metawatts.
Tyrian v RNJR and Qrow (listen tyrian's just really good at this)
Ruby vol4 character short (my fav trailer)
Yang v Mercury (best choreo in all rwby)
Weiss and Pilot v Lancers (i liked the physics on this one)
RWBY v Paladin (the one singular time team rwby fought as a proper team)
Extra freebie because I deserve it: Blacksun vs Roman (gunchucks)
Now. As for. The top 5 worst that I don't like. That's not to say that they don't get a 0/5, but that I personally don't rate them all that well. Also I should note the Battle for Haven and all of vol8 are freebies because every one of those fights minus maybe raven v cinder were goddamn dogshit. And I can't pick rwby v ace ops because I've already bagged on it
Cordovin's Mech v The Idiot Brigade (absolute worst fight, stupidest plotline, literally what made me start critiquing rwby, I came out of my well to shame rwby for this and did not go back and now I have a rwde blog)
JNPR v BRNZ (the fact that they stopped the fight to have a conversation. just. all of it. JNPR is not as funny as crwby seems to think they are)
the Whole Furious Cat Fight at the end of vol9 (all shit, even the one single bit of good scythe choreo, why couldn't Neo have just. stayed the villain again?)
Atlas Montage/FNKI v JNRO (screw you atlas montage and your weird blake/qrow duet and also Nora's weird possessive creepiness over Ren)
CFVY in the Breach (i literally hate all of team cfvy except maybe velvet, fuck those books)
So yeah! Fun times!

Top Energy-Efficient Hotel AC Units for Cost Savings and Sustainability
Tumblr media
With sustainability and operational efficiency becoming essential in the hospitality industry, investing in energy-efficient hotel AC units is a valuable choice for modern hotels. By utilizing the earth’s stable underground temperature to heat and cool spaces, these systems require minimal electricity. Hotels that install geothermal systems can see major reductions in both energy costs and carbon emissions, making them an ideal solution for eco-focused properties.
Conclusion
Investing in energy-efficient hotel AC units supports sustainability efforts while also delivering significant cost savings. With options ranging from VRF systems to geothermal solutions, there’s a variety of choices to suit different property needs and budgets. By selecting the right system, hotels can optimize their environmental impact and enhance guest comfort, creating a win-win scenario that aligns with the future of sustainable hospitality.

Comprehensive Services: Providers that offer a full range of services from maintenance to emergency repairs can be more cost-effective.
Customer Reviews: Online feedback from previous clients can help gauge service quality and customer satisfaction.
How to Choose an Air Conditioning Ventilation System in Dubai?
Choosing an air conditioning (AC) ventilation system is a crucial decision, especially in a city like Dubai where temperatures often soar well above 40°C. Given the region's extreme temperatures and high humidity levels, it is essential to consider systems that not only provide effective cooling but also ensure proper air circulation and filtration. Below, we outline key factors to consider when selecting an air conditioning ventilation system in Dubai’s climate and unique needs.
Tumblr media
1. Understand Your Cooling Needs
Before diving into the various options, it’s essential to assess your cooling needs. Larger areas may necessitate a central air conditioning system, which can efficiently cool multiple rooms, while smaller spaces might benefit from split or window units. A larger space may require a centralized system, while smaller areas can benefit from split or window AC units.
2. Energy Efficiency
Given the high energy consumption in Dubai due to extensive cooling needs, selecting an energy-efficient system can save you significantly on electricity bills. Regular maintenance and proper insulation of the space are crucial to maximizing the efficiency of the chosen system. Modern AC systems come with inverter technology that adapts the cooling output based on room temperature, ensuring more efficient energy use.
Tip: Check for the UAE’s ESMA energy label, which indicates the efficiency rating of electrical appliances. Systems with 4 or 5 stars provide optimal energy savings.
3. Air Quality and Filtration
Dubai’s arid environment can often carry dust and other pollutants, so it’s essential to choose a system that enhances indoor air quality. Given the region's unique climate, characterized by high temperatures and humidity levels, it is essential to choose a system that not only cools the air but also maintains a healthy indoor environment. Systems equipped with HEPA filters or UV light purification can further ensure clean, healthy air circulation.
4. Temperature and Humidity Control
Humidity control is a significant factor in maintaining comfort indoors. High humidity can lead to discomfort and even mold growth. The first step in this process is to assess the specific needs of your space, whether it be a residential or commercial environment. Look for systems that allow precise temperature and humidity adjustments to suit your needs.
5. System Type: Centralized vs. Ductless Systems
Choosing between a centralized and ductless system depends on your home’s structure and cooling preferences:
Centralized Systems: Ideal for larger homes or offices, providing even cooling across multiple rooms. They often require ductwork and can be more complex to install.
Ductless Split Systems: More flexible and easy to install. These systems are ideal for homes that don’t have pre-installed ductwork and provide targeted cooling for specific rooms.
Pros and Cons:
Centralized Systems: More efficient for large-scale cooling but more expensive and complex to maintain.
Ductless Systems: Easier to install and maintain but can be less efficient for entire homes with many rooms.
6. Smart and Programmable Features
Investing in an AC system with smart technology can add convenience and efficiency. The extreme climate of Dubai necessitates a robust and efficient cooling solution that not only maintains comfort but also optimizes energy consumption. This not only enhances comfort but can also result in energy savings by ensuring the AC runs only when needed.
7. Noise Levels
Given that AC systems often run continuously during Dubai’s hot months, choosing a system with a low noise level is vital. Systems designed with advanced sound-dampening technology can significantly reduce noise pollution, providing a more serene indoor atmosphere. Many modern units offer “quiet mode” settings that further reduce noise.
8. Maintenance and Servicing
Frequent maintenance is essential for optimal performance, particularly in Dubai's dusty conditions. Consulting with experienced professionals can provide valuable insights into the best options available, tailored to the specific needs of your property. Systems with easily accessible parts and self-cleaning features can simplify upkeep and reduce the likelihood of breakdowns.
What to Expect During an AC Repair Work in Dubai?
Air conditioning is a must-have in Dubai, especially given the intense heat throughout the year. The process typically begins with a thorough inspection of the unit to identify any underlying issues, such as refrigerant leaks, electrical problems, or mechanical failures. Whether it's a minor issue or a major malfunction, understanding what to expect during an AC repair work in Dubai can help you stay informed and prepared. Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect during an AC repair work in Dubai.
Tumblr media
1. Initial Assessment of the Problem
When you contact an AC repair service, the technician will first assess the issue. This process involves checking for any visible signs of wear and tear, such as leaks, corrosion, or damaged parts. The technician will often start by asking you questions about the problem you're experiencing, such as strange noises, poor cooling, water leakage, or electrical issues.
2. Diagnostic Check
Once the technician understands the issue, they will run a diagnostic check. The process typically begins with a thorough inspection of the unit, where technicians will assess both the indoor and outdoor components. They might also inspect the wiring and the filters to ensure there are no blockages. If the AC is a split unit, both the indoor and outdoor units will need to be checked.
3. Providing a Quote
After diagnosing the problem, the technician will provide you with an estimate of the repair costs. The technician will begin by inspecting the air conditioning system, checking for any visible signs of wear and tear, leaks, or malfunctioning components. Reputable AC repair companies in Dubai will provide a transparent breakdown of the costs so that there are no hidden fees. This dialogue is crucial, as it allows homeowners to ask questions and gain a deeper understanding of the issues affecting their air conditioning system.
4. Repair Process
Once you approve the estimate, the repair work begins. This meticulous evaluation is crucial for identifying the root cause of the malfunction, whether it be a refrigerant leak, electrical failure, or mechanical wear and tear. In some cases, if the issue is minor, it may only take a few hours, while more extensive repairs, like replacing a compressor, may take a day or more.
For example:
Clogged Filters: If the issue is with dirty filters, the technician will remove and clean or replace them, which is a quick fix.
Refrigerant Leak: If there is a refrigerant leak, the technician will identify and seal the leak, then recharge the system.
Compressor Failure: A more complex problem, such as compressor failure, may require replacing the compressor entirely, which can be costly and time-consuming.
5. Testing After Repair
Once the repairs are completed, the technician will test the system to ensure it's functioning properly. This includes checking refrigerant levels, inspecting electrical connections, and evaluating the overall performance of the system. The technician may adjust the settings and calibrate the thermostat to ensure the AC is running optimally.
6. Cleaning and Maintenance
During the repair process, technicians often perform some additional maintenance tasks, such as cleaning the evaporator coils and condenser, checking the drainage, and ensuring there is no mold or mildew buildup. This includes checking the refrigerant levels, inspecting the coils for dirt and debris, and evaluating the overall functionality of the system.
7. Customer Education
A professional AC repair technician will take the time to educate you on how to care for your AC unit. This evaluation is crucial for identifying the root cause of the malfunction, whether it be a refrigerant leak, electrical issue, or mechanical failure. If your system is old or inefficient, the technician may suggest upgrading to a more energy-efficient model to save on utility costs.

The Best Air Conditioners for High-Humidity Locations: Ideal for Coastal Hotels and Motels
Tumblr media
For coastal hotels and motels, choosing the best air conditioner is crucial for maintaining a comfortable and inviting environment, particularly in areas with high humidity. Balancing effective cooling with moisture control is essential in these climates, as excess humidity can affect not only guest comfort but also room durability and maintenance needs. Here’s a guide to the best air conditioners for high-humidity locations and how they can benefit hotels and motels situated near the coast.
Why High Humidity Requires Specialized Air Conditioning
In humid environments, the air holds significant moisture, which can impact guest comfort and the hotel’s infrastructure. Without proper dehumidification, rooms may feel warmer than they are, leading to higher cooling demands. Moisture can also damage furniture, lead to mildew growth, and create unpleasant odors. For these reasons, air conditioners in high-humidity locations should have effective moisture management capabilities to keep rooms cool, dry, and welcoming.
Key Features to Look for in Air Conditioners for Humid Environments
Strong Dehumidification Functionality
Dehumidification is one of the most essential features for AC units in humid climates. Look for air conditioners with a high moisture removal rate, measured in pints per hour, to keep the air comfortable and reduce the risk of mold growth. Some units even include specific dehumidify-only modes, allowing them to function effectively during cooler, damp periods when full cooling isn't necessary.
Advanced Inverter Technology
Inverter technology adjusts the compressor speed to the room’s cooling needs, making it ideal for high-humidity environments. By continuously modulating temperature, inverter-equipped ACs avoid sudden stops and starts, allowing for more consistent humidity control. This not only saves on energy costs but also keeps rooms at a steady temperature, enhancing guest comfort.
Anti-Corrosion Features
For properties near the ocean, salt in the air can cause corrosion in air conditioner components. Many air conditioner models designed for coastal or humid environments include anti-corrosion treatments on their coils, protecting them from salty air and increasing their lifespan. Anti-corrosion protection helps keep maintenance costs down and prevents early replacement due to rust or corrosion damage.
High SEER Ratings
Since humidity control is energy-intensive, choosing an AC unit with a high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating can reduce operational costs. High-SEER air conditioners operate more efficiently, providing necessary dehumidification without excessive energy use. Many units offer energy-saving modes or sensors that optimize cooling based on occupancy, further lowering electricity consumption in unoccupied rooms.
Humidity Sensors and Smart Controls
Advanced units equipped with humidity sensors automatically adjust cooling levels to manage moisture. These smart controls can be particularly useful in hotel settings, as they adapt based on real-time room conditions, delivering optimal performance even in peak humidity. Systems with Wi-Fi connectivity allow remote monitoring and control, which is helpful for managers who want to oversee AC performance from a centralized location.
Top Air Conditioner Types for High-Humidity Coastal Hotels
Ductless Mini-Split Systems
Ductless mini-split systems are highly efficient for managing humidity and temperature in individual rooms. With separate indoor and outdoor units, mini-splits operate quietly and offer flexible installation options. They allow each room’s AC to run independently, perfect for guests who may have different comfort preferences. The dehumidifying capabilities of mini-split systems, paired with inverter technology, make them a top choice for coastal hotels and motels.
Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners
Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners, or PTACs, are another popular choice for hotels. They are compact, wall-mounted units typically installed under windows, offering both heating and cooling options. PTACs are valued for their moisture control and can be outfitted with corrosion-resistant coils, making them suitable for humid, salty environments. Many models come with energy-saving features to optimize cooling based on room occupancy.
Centralized HVAC Systems with Zoning Capability
For larger coastal hotels, centralized HVAC systems with zoning offer effective temperature and humidity management across multiple rooms or floors. Zoning allows for individual control in different areas, making it easy to adjust cooling based on occupancy. This reduces overall energy consumption while providing excellent moisture control, as high-humidity zones can be cooled with more intensity.
Practical Tips for Maintaining ACs in Humid, Coastal Environments
Regular Filter Cleaning
High humidity can cause filters to clog more quickly. Frequent cleaning or replacement keeps air flowing smoothly and prevents mold buildup.
Inspect for Corrosion
Regularly check for corrosion on coils and other components, especially in coastal hotels. Anti-corrosion coatings can wear over time, so regular maintenance is key.
Optimize Dehumidification Settings
Use dehumidification modes on AC units when full cooling isn’t necessary to keep moisture in check without excessive energy use.
Conclusion
For hotels and motels in high-humidity areas, investing in the right air conditioners is essential for maintaining guest comfort and keeping operational costs down. Choosing models with high SEER ratings, inverter technology, and anti-corrosion features ensures reliable performance and durability. With the best air conditioners for high-humidity locations, coastal hotels can offer guests a comfortable, refreshing stay that meets the unique demands of their climate.
