Being Alone, Cats, and Children: Ellis Barely out of a puppyhood, a sensitive, gentle, lost little girl sits, terrified and alone, not knowing who to trust. d 65640, 1.5 yrs., 50 lbs Manhattan ACC TO BE KILLED – 6/20/2019 She was lost and alone when the police found her, and ELLIS was clearly frightened by these two strangers approaching her with a pole and a noose. And she should have been because that was what she remembered most about her ordeal --- the noose tightening around her neck as she thrashed and flailed and tried to breathe. Now she is in a kennel, curled up and pressed against the back wall in the hopes that she will not be hurt again. It’s no wonder she rebuffs any efforts to remove her from her new “safe space.” Yet she tries to trust, and when offered treats she comes forward in the hopes of finding a friend. Gentle, sensitive, and barely out of puppyhood, this 1.5 year old girl tries to smile through her broken spirit and shattered heart. What happened to poor Ellis, that she found herself alone in the world. Who did this to her? We will never know. What we do know is that she is in grave danger of dying if no one will step up and take a chance on her. She needs an experienced foster or adopter in an adult only home who can give her the safety and comforting routine she craves. Hurry and message our page or email us at [email protected] if you can be her hero. ELLIS, ID# 65640, 1.5 Yrs. Old, 50.6 lbs, Unaltered Female Manhattan ACC, Large Mixed Breed, Tan I came to the shelter as a Stray, 6/11/2019 Shelter Assessment Rating: New Hope Rescue Only Behavior Condition: 3. yellow AT RISK NOTE: Ellis has displayed distance increasing behaviors while at the care center and has remained fearful, not allowing for handling. Ellis would be best suited for placement with a new hope partner that can provide the necessary behavior modification. Medically, Ellis has begun to shown signs of respiratory issues. SURRENDER NOTES – BASIC INFORMATION: Ellis is a large mixed breed dog who came to MACC as a stray by police. She growled when approached by officers. She is reported to have chased a cat inside the home where it wandered. Because Ellis is a stray, her other previous history and behaviors is unknown. INTAKE NOTE – DATE OF INTAKE, 6/11/2019: During intake, Ellis seemed highly fearful, whale eyeing and low growling. She was brought inside her crate to medical intake where she remained at the back of her crate, not willing to come out or toward the front. No handling was attempted by counselor SHELTER ASSESSMENT SUMMARIES – Date of Assessment, 6/13/2019 Summary:: Ellis has remained very fearful at the care center and has been unable to be safely handled, out of concern for her stress level and handler safety, an assessment will not be attempted. INTAKE BEHAVIOR - Date of intake:: 6/11/2019 Summary:: Whale eyed, low growling MEDICAL BEHAVIOR - Date of initial:: 6/11/2019 Summary:: Tail tucked, crouched, tense, required sedation for exam due to level of fear IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 6/15: Ellis continues to approach the front for treats with the kennel door open. The handler was able to toss the leash over her head without issue (no growling/snapping etc.). With some gentle coaxing and tugs on the leash, Ellis comes out of the kennel but immediately begins to thrash and bite the leash. The handler attempted to return her to the kennel immediately and Ellis then snapped at the handler's hand and thrashed harder. The handler then attempted to coax her to exit the room and she thrashed and snapped again. When allowed to stand in between the kennel banks, Ellis grabs the leash and chews on it hard, going almost all the way through the leash. The handler eventually requires a second person to double leash Ellis and return her to the kennel. She continued to thrash, snap and leash bite throughout. 6/14: Ellis will approach the front of the kennel when offered treats. She will take treats from the handler's hands and come all the way to the front with the kennel door open. She retreats as soon as the leash is presented. 6/13: Ellis is very fearful at the care center. She retreats to the back of her kennel when handlers approach and present the leash. She shows no interest in treats that are tossed in her kennel. She slowly moves closer to the front when the leash is removed and the door is opened but retreats back whenever the leash is presented again. Throughout this interaction, she has a tense body, tucked tail, and whale-eye. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only Behavior Asilomar: TM - Treatable-Manageable Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats, Place with a New Hope partner Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to the level of fear displayed in the care center, Ellis may be best set up to succeed in an adult only home environment. Place with a New Hope partner: Ellis remains highly fearful in the care center and has been unable to be safely handled. At this time we feel Ellis would be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner, force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing or exposing Ellis to new and unfamiliar situations. Guidance from a professional trainer or veterinary behaviorist is advised. Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression Potential challenges comments:: Ellis has growled and snapped at handlers upon approach, please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
