It’s so nice that I’m already worried about ruining it with thoughts of biking or commuting. But the straps are kind of stiff and uncomfortable on my delicate mammary glands. And did I say it’s pretty expensive?!

It’s the kind of backpack I’d be happy to keep if it were, say, $79. Maybe even $89. But $235?! For a backpack that’s not even some sexy upscale Creative Professional household brandname?? My lower middle-class upbringing prevents me from committing to such an expenditure on which I’m only lukewarm. What to do?

Bag option #1: The ISM Backpack

The ISM retails for $235 USD; it’s only available online but comes with free shipping and returns in the USA. It ships in a pretty box with a pretty branded dust bag and a bunch of tissue that smells of “Instagram unboxing moment”.

I wore this bag out in public a few times: to the work lounge at the Public Hotel (a hotspot for “cool-looking people” working remotely), to pay a visit to my old MoMA office, and to a job interview. Did I feel like a Creative Professional? You bet I did! But then my former coworker commented that the bag made me look like a “techy person”, which ruined everything it had going for it. (There is a fine line between Creative Professional and Startup Chic that I refuse to cross. It involves hoodies.)

It fit everything in the “capacity” control group, albeit quite snugly, but its real downfall was the straps: although they were quite hearty, being both wide and well padded (which would be great for those with flat chests), their stiff sturdiness meant they were very inflexible, and basically cut into my breasts any time I raised my arms together, as one would if biking:

ISM owner/designer Justin emailed me after I returned the bag, and explained they were working on a smaller version for 13″ laptops. I explained this doesn’t help people with mammary glands who own 15″ laptops. Per Justin:

I feel what you mean Christy, a bag that fits a 15" laptop and is unisex has been a tough design challenge given the size difference between males and females. We have been able to shorten the straps to accommodate though.

I get it. Designing for the fact that 50% of the population has boobs is hard! Did you know that basically everything is designed around men and their stupid bodies?? It's also subsequently a prime example of how e-comm genders backpack sizing: you’ll find that 15″ laptop bags are generally only found in the “Men’s” section of websites. I need a drink.

I bought this bag at the MUJI store for a very reasonable $49 USD. Like everything MUJI, it’s pretty decent quality both in materials and design, and feels like it’ll last a while.

Unfortunately, I didn’t end up testing this “in the real world” because, whoops, it only comfortably fits a 13″ laptop. But I did uncomfortably fit my 15″ laptop inside, really stretching the limits of the side panels, and then managed to cram the test “capacity” content on top (with room to spare!). I then did a “hunch test”, folding myself over as one would on a road bike, and found that there was barely any padding on the back panel, and my spine was knocking against the hard surface of my computer. Not cool! Plus the back did not have a mesh surface, literally making it not cool on a sweaty back.

Yes I get it, I have a big stupid computer.

Right after purchasing the MUJI bag I walked across the street and picked this up for $29.90. YOLO!

Realising that is was yet another bag made for 13″ laptops, I could immediately tell that the quality was much lesser than MUJI’s: it was much lighter in weight, and the fabric thinner. Look at those ugly shoulder straps where the fabric is bunching. The front pocket’s structure is so weak that it sags. Sad!

But: pretty good akshully?!

I again force-fit my behemoth laptop and belongings into the small frame, yet, contrary to expectation, this thing was comfortable AF?! And even had room to spare. The straps were super soft and cushy and malleable around my boobs, and the “hunch test” revealed amazingly thick layers of padding on two sides of the back panel, with a thinner center panel that relieves any pressure on your spine. What kind of ugly genius is this?

There’s a few other mid-range “nice” bag brands I was looking into online, such as the one which esteemed Creative Professional Jessica Hische ended up going with, but let’s just assume I left them out because they lack the quality needed for this rigorous assessment and not because the bag designer whom I went on a date with decided to ghost me after I sprained my ankle while in Canada. Ahem.

Final Verdict... and a Backpack Hack (!!) (...Backhack™?!)

Although I was quite impressed with the comfort the UNIQLO model provided (both to my body and my wallet), I was actually going to declare this experiment a failure and return all the backpacks. Until, that is, I took a closer look at the interior construction of the UNIQLO and MUJI bags: they measured as though they should be tall enough for my latop, and yet the MacBook corners stubbornly stuck out. Time to play detective! 🔍

Turning the bags inside-out, I noticed they both included a superfluous, space-reducing seam at the bottom of the main pocket. WTF.

By removing this seam on the UNIQLO model, I gained a full inch of vertical room, ALLOWING THE 15″ LAPTOP TO ACTUALLY FIT IN THE DAMN BAG. Yes, it fits snugly, and some may argue that the superfluous seam protects the edge of the computer from hitting the ground, but the very bottom edge seam is actually pretty bulky and does a decent job of protecting as is.

Verdict: With the inclusion of this super deviant hack (and ONLY with this inclusion), UNIQLO wins!!!!!!!!

Epilogue

I’ve been using this bag for 7 months now. It looks kinda cheap and it tends to collect lint, but my shoulders are miraculously like never sore. And, even on a grocery run after stuffing a myriad of pokey-shaped food items in the thing until I can barely close it, it’s always very comfortable on my tender back when biking home (I did this very thing 2 weeks ago at the Farmer’s Market after buying Celine Dion tickets, because I am a white woman in her late 30s). 

Oh, also: it’s black, so yes I am a Creative Professional, thank you for noticing!

Recensione: Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock, best in class

Sapete qual è la cosa che più mi piace della Thunderbolt 3? La possibilità di collegare un cavo ad un portatile ed avere in un colpo solo ricarica, gestione di monitor esterni e diverse porte aggiuntive. Si può fare anche con la USB-C, e lo abbiamo visto, ma la Thunderbolt 3 offre maggiori garanzie di stabilità ed una banda superiore, tale da rendere possibile la creazione di prodotti più completi e performanti. Uso un dock anche sull'iMac Pro e in ambito professionale questa porta offre potenzialità incredibili, ma in generale è ben più utile sui portatili visto che su desktop non c'è la stessa ristrettezza di connessioni, non serve la carica e difficilmente si ha la necessità di un ulteriore monitor esterno o di una eGPU.

Ma sapete cosa non mi piace della Thunderbolt 3? Che questa promessa, nata insieme ai MacBook Pro del 2016, non l'ho vista avverarsi che nel 2018. Alcuni dock esistevano già prima ed altri sono apparsi subito dopo, ma entrambi avevano problemi. I primi non erano compatibili con i Mac, perché utilizzavano dei chip Texas Instrument di vecchia generazione per la componente USB-C (che viaggia sempre a braccetto di T3), mentre gli altri sono stati quasi tutti una delusione. Tre i principali problemi riscontrati nei modelli che ho provato fino al 2017: Power Delivery con ricarica bassa o assente, pessima gestione degli schermi UHD (alcuni senza HiDPI, altri con continui blackout) ed una saltuaria instabilità connettendo molti dispositivi.

Arrivo così a parlarvi del nuovo Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock, che già dalle specifiche si dimostra essere il più completo e professionale dispositivo del suo genere. La struttura esterna è piuttosto standard, risultando simile a tanti altri dock e facilmente confondibile con il modello non Pro della stessa Elgato. Lo chassis è in alluminio con dei gommini antiscivolo alla base ed un rialzo centrale che favorisce il passaggio dell'aria e la dissipazione del calore.

In dotazione si trovano semplicemente un alimentatore con prolunga e presa schuko ed un cavo T3 di circa 70 cm. Ricordo che nei primissimi dock neanche c'era il cavo, quindi non mi lamento troppo, ma continuo a pensare che averlo di 1m o 1,5m sia più versatile. Iniziamo a dare un'occhiata più da vicino alle connessioni di questo dock, che rappresentano il suo principale pregio.

La zona frontale prevede 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 (precedentemente note come USB 3), un'uscita audio da 3,5mm che supporta anche le cuffie con microfono ed un doppio lettore per schede di memoria con SD e microSD UHS-II. Già solo questo aspetto è di grandissima utilità e lo distingue dagli altri dock che ho visto finora. Per me che scarico ogni giorno foto e video da fotocamere, droni, ecc.. è davvero una gran cosa.

Il lato B del dock non è meno interessante, poiché prevede una ricchissima serie di porte ben distanziate le une dalle altre. Iniziando da sinistra:

La quantità di connessioni è eccellente ma è soprattutto la loro tipologia a rendere validissimo questo dock. A differenza di altri che ho provato in passato, non offre soltanto la seconda Thunderbolt 3 per il daisy chain ma ha anche 2 USB-C di seconda generazione. La scelta della DisplayPort sulla HDMI è sempre gradita, in quanto si tratta dello standard in ambiente professionale e per chi necessità della seconda ci sono adattatori da USB-C economici ed efficaci. Il dock supporta fino a due monitor 4K a 60Hz e sulla T3 ci si possono anche collegare quelli 5K, compatibilmente con la GPU del computer host (qui i dettagli relativi ai Mac).

L'ho provato con l'iMac Pro (recensione), con il Mac mini 2018 (recensione) ed il MacBook Air 2018 (recensione), e con tutti si è dimostrato all'altezza delle aspettative nella gestione degli schermi esterni. In particolare gestisce senza problemi sia i 60Hz a 4K che le modalità HiDPI, così come il risveglio a coperchio chiuso coi portatili. Quest'ultimo richiede però delle periferiche Bluetooth, poiché è solo da lì che i portatili Apple possono ricevere il segnale di accensione wireless. Se si utilizzano mouse e tastiere Logitech Unifying con il dongle collegato sul dock, sarà invece necessario aprire lo schermo del portatile per riaccenderlo. Ma era prevedibile.

Per controllare la luminosità dei monitor di terze parti con la tastiera ho usato l'app native display brightness che mi era stata consigliata da un utente nella recensione dell'LG 27uk600 e funziona perfettamente, andando a modificare il parametro a livello hardware grazie all'interfaccia DDC/CI.

La gestione di numerose periferiche esterne si è dimostrata stabilissima e le performance dei dischi dati sono ottime, ma è importante segnalare anche la capacità di Power Delivery via T3 fino ad 85W, ricaricando completamente anche i MacBook Pro da 15". A corredo con i dock di Elgato vi è anche l'utility Thunderbolt Dock che abilita la ricarica ad alta capacità via USB (utile ad esempio per gli iPad) ed aggiunge un'icona nella menu bar del Mac che consente di scollegare con un singolo clic tutti i dispositivi connessi e svincolare il portatile in un istante.

Grazie alla quantità di porte ed alla loro disposizione, si ottiene davvero tutto quello di cui si può aver bisogno con un unico cavo. Difficilmente servirà un hub aggiuntivo ed avere integrato un lettore di SD/microSD ad alte prestazioni è la ciliegina sulla torta, poiché si esclude l'eventuale necessità di chi le usa di collegarne uno esterno. C'è un singolo aspetto che ritengo migliorabile e riguarda più che altro l'ergonomia nella disposizione delle porte. In particolare io avrei diviso in modo uguale le 2 USB-C e le 2 USB-A, alternandone 1 ed 1 sia frontalmente che sul retro. Questo perché le porte a vista sono le più pratiche da raggiungere e non si capisce perché debbano essere solo nel vecchio formato. A me capita spesso di dover collegare al volo anche dispositivi USB-C, che siano dischi, pendrive o smartphone e tablet, dunque avere una di queste porte davanti sarebbe stato molto utile.

Conclusione

Verso la fine del 2018 ho provato il primo dock T3 ben fatto e non ho avuto timore nel definirlo il migliore di tutti. Ma per fortuna la tecnologia va avanti e dopo pochi mesi quel titolo gli viene strappato dall'Elgato Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock, che lo supera praticamente in tutto e costa di meno. L'attuale prezzo su Amazon è di 349€ e seppure abbia solo 2 vecchie USB-A, la presenza delle USB-C gen 2 in aggiunta alla T3 passante garantiscono una maggiore flessibilità. Inoltre non ci costringono ad occupare altre porte del notebook per connettere periferiche USB-C, che sono sempre più diffuse. La gestione dei monitor è ottima, la stabilità eccellente, il design riuscito e la ricarica da 85W supporta pure i MacBook Pro 15". Infine, la presenza del doppio lettore microSD/SD elimina la necessità di quello esterno ed entrambi sono UHS-II. Se l'obiettivo è quello di avere un unico cavo per un centro di connessione valido per tutto, questo dock è la migliore implementazione che mi sia capitato di vedere. Il prezzo da pagare rimane salato, ma pur senza sconti risulta inferiore ad altre soluzioni top che ho avuto modo di provare e che non sono altrettanto "smart".

We waited years for Microsoft to launch its Surface tabletsin India, and it's taken even longer for the Surface Bookand Surface Laptop to arrive. This family of devices is meant to showcase Windows to the best possible extent - they're all unapologetically premium, but more than that, they're genuinely fresh and interesting. Microsoft is competing with its own partners by pushing out PC hardware, and is emphasising design and engineering to set itself apart. It's pretty obvious that Apple's success integrating hardware and software has influenced this strategy.

Of all the Surface devices, the Surface Laptop is the most conventional. It isn't a 2-in-1, and it doesn't have a fancy engineered hinge or kickstand. It's meant to strike a balance between portability and productivity, and will appeal to those for whom the Surface Pro with its keyboard cover won't cut it.

Microsoft Surface Laptop design

Everyone who sees photos of the Surface Laptop will want to know how its fabric deck feels, and honestly, it isn't easy to describe even though we've used it before on the Surface Pro's Type Cover. Alcantara is a material that's 68 percent polyester and 32 percent polyurethane, and it's a bit like suede with a slightly waxy coating. It isn't perfectly smooth, but it doesn't have the texture of cloth either. It didn't fray or come undone even when we scratched it hard, and it's moulded like plastic around the keyboard tray. The Alcantara extends all the way to the edges of the deck and is pinched down, leaving room for a fingernail to help you lift the lid when it's closed.

The material is supposed to be resistant to spills and stains, and Microsoft even says it can be cleaned with warm water and mild soap, two things we wouldn't want anywhere near a laptop. We can't yet say how well it will hold up to long-term use, especially for people who tend to use their gadgets while eating.

It's worth pointing out that the fabric has one major downside - it's permanently stuck on to the metal chassis. The only way to replace or repair anything on the inside of this laptop is to rip the layers apart with a knife, and there's no putting it back together after that. In fact, when the Surface Laptop first launched in the USA, it famously received a repairability index score of zero from iFixit.

As for the rest of this laptop, it's fairly minimalist but still very noticeable. The lid has a simple matte aluminium finish, but with a prominent and highly reflective Windows logo in the centre. Microsoft has said that it isn't bringing the Burgundy, Cobalt Blue, or Graphite Gold options to India, which is a pity. The lid is pretty thin and it does bend and flex under pressure, but surprisingly there's no distortion whatsoever on the screen. The hinge is sunken and completely hidden under the fabric layer. It feels firm, and at least on our brand new unit, the lid didn't fall even if it was left just barely open. Overall, despite its waif-like appearance, the Surface Laptop seems to be built very well.

The lack of connectivity will be a huge concern for many buyers. The Surface Laptop is even more minimalist than the MacBook Air, with only a single USB 3.0 port, a 3.5mm audio socket, and a Mini-DisplayPort for video output. There isn't even an SD card slot. Many ultraportables are light on ports, but the Surface Laptop isn't even that thin or light. In this day and age we would have expected USB Type-C and preferred Thunderbolt 3, but most people will be fine with the far more common Type-A standard.

Your only relief comes in the form of Microsoft's Surface Connect Port, the tab-like slot on the right used by the bundled charger, which also supports Microsoft's Surface Dock. This accessory will give you four more USB 3.0 ports, two more Mini-DisplayPorts, Gigabit Ethernet and another audio output, but it's listed for Rs. 17,560 online in India, which is an absurd amount to pay.

The ports are also a little hard to reach thanks to the Surface Laptop's inward-slanting sides. Slotting the charger into the narrow Surface Connect Port in particular is an extremely fiddly process, and we wound up having to lift the laptop and bend over to see exactly what we were doing each time.

Next to the ports on either side of this laptop are white patches that look a lot like the antenna lines that are now common on smartphones. They stand out quite distinctly, and unfortunately they look like additional ports or slots that have been blanked out.

The keyboard has one major quirk, which is the placement of the power button. Microsoft obviously wanted the Delete key to be in the corner above the Backspace key, but we found ourselves still likely to hit the power button by accident. It also isn't flatter or stiffer than the keys surrounding it, which would have been the obvious precaution to take. The Fn row has been displaced by the paging keys and various shortcuts, but you can swap the keys' primary and secondary roles by simply tapping the Fn modifier once, which is quite convenient.

The Surface Laptop is only 14.47mm thick at its thickest point, and weighs only 1.25kg. It's super portable and super convenient to whip out of a sling bag or backpack. The only thing you get in the box with the Surface Laptop is its proprietary 44W charger, and we love its integrated USB port. You might not have enough ports on the laptop itself, but you can at least charge your phone on the go. However, we found the power cable to be a bit too short.

Microsoft is selling the Surface Laptop in five different configurations, ranging in price from Rs. 86,999 to Rs. 2,33,999. At the bottom of the stack you get an Intel Core i5-7200U CPU with integrated Intel HD Graphics 620, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. The top-end variant has a Core i7-7660U processor with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640, 16GB of RAM, and a 1TB SSD. This is a pretty wide range, and so the Surface Laptop competes with premium thin-and-light models including the MacBook Air as well as luxury laptops and 2-in-1s such as the Lenovo Yoga 920 and Dell XPS 13 9370. It's worth noting that these 7th Gen Intel Core processors are nearly two years old and significantly weaker than current offerings. It's also surprising that Microsoft has launched such expensive variants here but not the entry-level ones with Core m3 processors and 4GB of RAM.

We're reviewing the variant priced at Rs. 1,14,999, which has the Core i5, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Considering that the RAM and SSD are soldered to the motherboard and there's no access to them anyway, you're going to want to account for future needs right from the start. Upgrades are simply not possible.

The touchscreen measures 13.5 inches diagonally but has a unique old-school 3:2 aspect ratio. Microsoft chose this squarish shape for its Surface tablets, and it makes sense when trying to use a device in portrait or landscape. While the look is consistent here, it isn't necessarily useful. You might think of it as extra vertical space or reduced width. It isn't the best choice if you watch a lot of videos or need to work on two documents side by side, but it works well for general productivity.

The resolution is completely non-standard at 2256x1504, and makes for a density of 201ppi. Windows 10 scales to 150 percent by default and we found this to be comfortable and crisp. This might not be a 2-in-1, but the touchscreen can still come in handy. We didn't wind up using touch a lot, but it's always nice to have. The Surface Pen is supported, but won't be particularly comfortable to use.

One thing that we don't often see even on premium laptops is an ambient light sensor, which means that brightness adjusts itself automatically. Above the screen is also a 720p webcam and the sensors needed to support Windows Hello face recognition. Stereo speakers are embedded beneath the keyboard. Microsoft isn't publishing an exact battery capacity, but iFixit has discovered that it's a 45.2Whr unit. It's rated for 14.5 hours of video playback which is impressive on paper, but we'll see shortly how well it really performs.

Our review unit was running Windows 10 Pro. The Surface Laptop was initially meant to ship running Windows 10 S, a reduced-functionality version of Windows. Somewhat like Windows RT, Windows 10 S made Edge and Bing the default Web browser and search engine respectively, without any ability to change them. Users could also only install apps from the Windows Store rather than just downloading anything they like. This was meant to usher users into an iOS-like walled garden, but due to massive backlash, this edition of Windows has been discontinued. Instead, the Surface Laptop ships with Windows 10 in "S Mode", which behaves the same. This mode can be disabled at no cost - as long as you find an option that's buried within the Microsoft Store app. With no clear direction, this might confuse a lot of buyers who just want to download Google Chrome or any other common software.
