“Milk is chillin’, Giz is chillin’, what more can I say? Top Billin’!”
Summer of ‘88 in Medina (Brooklyn) was INFAMOUS!
The Gods can tell you, the golden era of hip-hop culture was at its peak in the Mecca of Brooklyn during Summer of ‘88…
Two Iconic albums from local Brooklyn artist dropped June of ‘88. “What More Can I Say?” by MC Milk Dee and DJ Gizmo from Audio Two, and “Long Live The Kane” by Big Daddy Kane.
And it was the hit single “Top Billin’” from Audio Two that reign supreme and captured that infamous Brooklyn summer of ‘88.
Every Block Party would play that song on repeat, and every car with the booming system would take every opportunity to stop at a red light if a group of girls or crew were out there to play that song and show off their system.
If you know, you know…
“Go Brooklyn!”

Lingthusiasm Episode 96: Welcome back aboard the metaphor train!
We're taking you on a journey to new linguistic destinations, so come along for the ride and don't forget to hold on!
In this episode, your hosts Lauren Gawne and Gretchen McCulloch get enthusiastic about metaphors! It's easy to think of literary comparisons like "my love is like a red, red rose" but metaphors are also far more common and almost unnoticed in regular conversation as well. For example, English speakers often talk about ideas as a journey (the metaphor train) or as if they're visual - clear or murky or heavy or maybe fuzzy, but not as fluffy or feathery or metallic or polka-dotted, but other languages can use different metaphors. We also talk about the process of metaphor design, and how metaphors can help us understand - or misunderstand - abstract concepts like electricity or language learning.
Note that this episode originally aired as Bonus 30: Welcome aboard the metaphor train! We've added a few new things about metaphors and an updated announcements section to the top. We're excited to share one of our favourite bonus episodes from Patreon with a broader audience, while at the same time giving everyone who works on the show a bit of a break.
Click here for a link to this episode in your podcast player of choice or read the transcript here.
Announcements:
In this month’s bonus episode we get Tom Scott's Language Files team together on one call for the first and last time! We talk with host/writer Tom Scott, as well as researcher/writer Molly Ruhl and animator Will Marler, about their roles putting the videos togehter, Gretchen's role in the brainstorming and fact-checking process, and what it's like working on a big, multi-faceted project like the Language Files videos.
Join us on Patreon now to get access to this and 90+ other bonus episodes. You’ll also get access to the Lingthusiasm Discord server where you can chat with other language nerds.

I'll be back to work full time. I've found the low-key level of blogging I managed this year to be sustainable, so expect it to be business-as-usual here. Lingthusiasm will also continue with monthly main and bonus episodes, thanks to the patrons who support the show and ensure we have a team that can keep everything rolling while begin to take on more administrative responsibilities in my job.

Top Tax Strategies for Small Businesses in 2024
Owning a small business is tough in itself, so you do not want to be unprepared when tax time comes along. Given the potential impact on your business’s bottom line in 2024, Effective Tax Strategies can be crucial for you. Keep Your Business Tax Bill Low, and More Cash in Your Pocket as Our Landscape Evolves with the Law. In this series of blog posts, we will help you to take these steps by outlining the top tax strategies for call center businesses and give actionable advice on how your business can best navigate the 2023/24 financial year with regard to taxes.
The Importance of Tax Strategies for Small Businesses
Tax planning: Small businesses need to be on their toes when it comes to tax laws. Cutting Your Taxes: The Key to Growing a Business Faster Taxes can eat up your profits, however you may get around this by lowering the quantity of tax payable and re-investing those saved into growing your personal enterprise. For sole proprietorship, partnership or LLC having good tax planning will help to take control of finances as well as being careful and compliant in the eyes of the IRS.
Best Tax Planning for 2024 Small Businesses
Use tax deductions
Tax deductions arguably provide Small Business Owners with the most powerful tool. Eligible business expenses mean less taxable income, which is a code for having to pay fewer taxes. These include office supplies, travel expenses to carry you your work advertising or employee wages. Also, look at the Qualified Business Income (QBI) which allows you to deduct up to 20% of your qualified business income for eligible business
Increase your retirement contributions
These can give you head starts to the future and they offer immediate tax benefits as well. Retirement plan contributions, such as a SEP IRA, SIMPLE IRA or 401(k), are usually tax-deductible. This lowers your taxable income while at the same time, creating a retirement nest egg. Small business owners could have a win-win on their hands by contributing as much to retirement funds now, in tax savings, setting themselves up for financial security later.
Change Your Business Type
The way how your business is structured can greatly influence the quality of life, and taxes you pay as an owner. For instance, working as a sole proprietor or partnership could end you up in higher self-employment taxes. Conversely, electing S-Corporation status would result in tax savings
Keep Up with Tax Law Changes
The laws regarding tax are always changing and accordingly what was good for you last year may not be a clever idea this year. As a small business owner, you need to stay up-to-date with the latest developments and changes in tax regulations. Likewise, deductions, credits and other tax-saving opportunities may be impacted by the recent changes in tax law. Keeping up with the trends and getting help from a tax professional can customize your strategies that stay under compliance while reaping its benefits fully.
Plan for Estimated Taxes
Hopefully, you pay estimated taxes quarterly because this is just a fine to wake up and be aware of. If you have not budgeted for these payments, then penalties and interest may apply. The simplest way to avoid that challenge will be by rightly estimating and hiding plenty of money the year, which we all know can easily turn into a complicated monthly game. This will help you stay on top of your tax obligations and prevent any surprises come tax season.

Audio Two was a Brooklyn hip hop duo made up of emcee Kirk "Milk Dee" Robinson and DJ Nat "Gizmo" Robinson, best known for their hit "Top Billin'." Released in 1987 as the B-side to their debut single "Make it Funky," "Top Billin'" became a chart-topping success and one of the most sampled tracks in hip hop history. Their debut album, What More Can I Say? (1988), showcased this hit and solidified their place in the hip hop scene. However, despite early success, their follow-up album, I Don't Care: The Album (1990), yielded only moderate hits like "I Get the Papers."🖤🎼🎶
Milk Dee later found success as a producer, most notably with Eamon's 2004 hit "Fuck It (I Don't Want You Back)," while Gizmo transitioned into a successful career as a recording engineer, working with artists like Donell Jones and Tyrese. Audio Two's influence continues through the legacy of "Top Billin'," which remains a classic in hip hop.
