Important! Nitrogen fertilizer should not be applied in autumn, as this will stimulate the growth activity of the shoots and all of them will freeze, maybe even in the quilt.

The easiest thing is done, now it is necessary to carefully remove and cover the blackberry bushes from the trellis.

Important! Alas, but absolutely no damage to the blackberries can withstand frosts of a few tens of degrees Fahrenheit without exceeding a few tens of degrees Fahrenheit. Then already begin negative changes in the tissue, especially at the tips of the shoots. THE RIGHT TIME TO MULCH BLACKBERRIES The most appropriate time is often the end of October (in the middle of the US) when it has started to freeze and you can't wait for the warmth to arrive. The most dangerous thing is if the mulching will be followed by a week or even two weeks of really high temperatures or even rain, which can lead to blackberry rooting. For annuals, this is not fatal: from the root buds, the branches rejuvenate again like a bird's "phoenix". Of course, the gardener will lose the whole season, and if he makes repeated mistakes, he will lose the second season. Here we must be guided by the indications of the weather stations, which sometimes tell us exactly when a steady cold spell is coming. And while we wait for the cold, you can treat blackberries with a 3% Bordeaux solution to rid the plants of winter stage pests and diseases.

As long as the temperature goes down below 32°F (0°C) and doesn't even rise above 32°F (0°C) during the day, blackberry mulching is very possible. As we have already said, the period for mulching blackberries is usually in late October or early November in the central part of the U.S. However, this is in the middle of the country. If you live farther south, you may not need mulch at all, or even be prohibited (shoots will be prohibited because inside, under mulch, a lot of completely unnecessary moisture accumulates, and if there is too much moisture, you can even start rotting the roots, and then the blackberries will die completely). If you live in the north, then you can start mulching a whole month earlier. Therefore, before you mulch, you need to remember some important rules.

Rule #1: Blackberries can be ruined not only by a winter with no snow at all but also by a provocative thaw where frost suddenly turns to rain. In this case, the buds will freeze to death, so try to use extra, such as dried leaves, in addition to the main shelter, which can "take the hit". Rule #2: Do not rush to cover blackberries and wait for a light but steady frost, otherwise both roots and buds will simply uproot. As we have already mentioned, if you rush to cover, a lot of water will accumulate under it; in fact, a greenhouse effect will occur, which will damage the above-ground parts of the plant and the root system. In addition, due to the excess of water, various fungi and bacteria develop very actively. In this case, the shrub will regrow in spring, only if the above-ground part dies or if the top is a bit podgy, but if the roots are affected, the site will have to be laid again. Rule #3: If you live in a western area where the thermometer doesn't go below 14°F (-10°C) in the winter, forget about mulching or use a single layer of agricultural fabric, which "breathes".

Those who have mulched their grapes will find it easier, while those who have not will find it more difficult. Blackberry branches, very carefully so as not to break, should be removed from their supports, wire, and placed on the surface of the soil that has been taken by frost, and gently pinned to them. If the bush is large, tie them together with twine before laying. To exclude the blowing of blackberries, or at least minimize it, it is necessary to cover the shoots already laid on the surface of the soil with dry leaves (or lay branches on top of them, sprinkled with leaves in advance), and afterward with a soil mulch film, something that should be fixed and not tear the wind. This can be bricks on the edge, crates, plywood, etc.

THE PERFECT MULCHING MATERIAL Gardeners have debated, are debating, and will continue to debate what is the best mulching material for blackberries. Some try to mulch with film, others use agricultural fabrics exclusively, but trust me, whichever way you choose, it still has pros and cons. Take film for example: if you live in the middle of the country, that's fine, but if you're near the south, obviously the temperature changes in the winter can create condensation under the film, leading to the consequences mentioned above. If you have decided to use film, or if you don't have anything else handy, you can use a layer between the plants and the film, for example, a mulch, as in a layer of moss - with double protection: against moisture and against frost. Then there are agro textiles, a relatively new non-woven material that has perfect permeability to water and air (they "breathe"). Even during the thawing period (which occurs in autumn and winter), agro textiles show their good side: they let water pass through and allow it to evaporate.

However, if there is too much water (i.e. active snowmelt in mid-winter), it cannot cope with the evaporation of excess water and it thaws. Therefore, in areas where thawing is active, you better warn yourself and use fir wood, corn, or at least dry leaves covered with twigs or branches. If you have to choose between light and black wool, it is better to choose light wool, because black wool gets very hot in spring (if you live in the city and your blackberries are in a country house, when you go to the country house it will be cooked under black wool). It is recommended for northerners to use sintepon synthetic mulch film, but it should not be placed on the plant, but on pre-layered leaves, dry and free from all kinds of diseases. However, in warm winters with low snow, plants in northern areas may suffer under this type of mulch.

MISTAKES WHEN MULCHING BLACKBERRIES The first mistake: is not appearing under the cover of the poison of mice (believe me, they eat all the buds). The second mistake: is using sawdust as insulation for blackberries. They absorb moisture very quickly, turn into just a block of ice, and then melt very slowly. I personally found a piece of ice as late as July in a pile of sawdust. What's wrong with that? Blackberries don't warm up in the spring, they slowly wilt under the ice and rocks instead. The third mistake: is using straw for mulch. Straw actively attracts rodents, who settle in it, build "apartment buildings" and live there, eating blackberry buds and nibbling on shoots, and in spring it is not easy to remove all the semi-digested winter straw from the site.

The fourth mistake: is delaying the removal of mulch material. Remember to run to the site as soon as the snow melts and the temperature rises to remove the mulching material: a strong frost will not, but a thaw may occur. Make sure you remove the mulching material before the buds on the blackberries swell. Basically, there is nothing particularly complicated: a dozen shrubs, primitive trellis, no less primitive shelter, and the main thing - all the time and at the same time, do not forget the rodents.

If he never sees a palm tree again, it’ll be too soon, Flip thinks as he watches, waits with bated breath as helicopters fly by.

The birds don’t even have a chance to fly away before the bright orange of a line of explosions burns into the jungle. The people don’t have a chance either, but then again, they never did. No one ever did.

The sky goes black with napalm and smoke, and Flip has to look away.

“Soft May mists are here again.

There, the war goes on.

Beside the privet the creamy

white tulips are extra

fine this year. There,

foliage curls blackened back:

it will, it must

return. But when?

A cardinal enchants me

with its song…”

 Flip wipes the sweat from his brow, squints against the sun. The jungle is harsh, unforgiving. He shouldn’t be here. He’s there anyway, been there for two whole years. His DEROS is almost here, all he has to do is hold on a little longer. Just a little longer and he’ll be coming home to you.

Just the thought of you makes him sigh, as quiet as he can anyway. He doesn’t know who the fuck is around, doesn’t know if they’re friend or foe. Two years and he still doesn’t know. He thinks of you, thinks of your smile, of your laugh. He thinks of the tapes you send him, the voice messages he plays over and over again on the little cassette player he’s got shoved in his backpack.

He wipes the sweat from his brow.

They’re trudging, really that’s the only word for it. Waist-deep in the muddy water of a river, surrounded by humidity so thick he sometimes feels like he can’t breathe. He’s filthy, exhausted, and angry as all hell. He’s so angry, that he’s there. So angry.

He wants a cigarette, wants a drink.

He wants you.

Instead he’s here, in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by the blazing sun and too much green, death at any moment, the fear of it keeping him awake at night. He can’t afford to stay awake at night, not like this, not with conditions like these.

He’s got the sun in his face, a pack on his back that’s fifty-pounds easy, and a gun in his hand that he didn’t think he’d ever have to shoot. He hasn’t eaten anything not from a can in months, hasn’t had a hot shower in even longer.

Two years. Two years he’d been here, Flip thinks to himself with a grimace. It was only supposed to be one, but it’s two.

His fellow Marines start to slow down, the water rising as the river-bed grows deeper. Some of these soldiers are boys, too young. Flip feels old standing next to them, next to these kids who can’t be more than nineteen, twenty. He’s thirty-five, and the boys look up to him. He wishes they didn’t.

“Are you excited?” One of them, a sweet kid named Eric, asks.

Eric’s got bright eyes and a crooked nose, and a gap in his teeth that means he can whistle louder than anyone else in the squadron. He doesn’t of course, not unless they’re in a village or a city or somewhere they can breathe for two fucking minutes. Eric can play cards like no one else can, has won more cigarettes playing poker than he probably should.

Eric got his hand blown off three weeks ago and was still waiting to be brought back home.

“For what?” Flip replies. He makes sure to keep his voice low, makes sure not to talk too loud. He doesn’t know who might hear.

“To go home, to your wife.” Eric smiles, as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world.

It’s harder and harder to find smiles these days.

“Yeah, I am.” Flip says back, and just to humor him, takes out the pocket-watch from his jacket.

The watch belonged to Flip’s father who fought in World War 2, it used to have a picture of Flip’s mother on the inside, but now it held a picture of you.

You’re smiling in the picture, it’s a portrait of you from your wedding day. Flip had insisted on snapping an image of you, and he was glad that he did. The corners were all worn from how much he rubbed his finger along the edges of it.

Eric leans over and takes a look at you. He always says you’re pretty and Flip always agrees.

“What’s she like?” Eric asks, scanning the trees for snipers, wading in the water.

“She’s funny. Really smart too.” Flip replies, and Eric chuckles.

“Smarter than you?” He asks, always full of questions in that way teenagers are.

“Fuck yeah, way smarter than me. Do you see her here?” Flip tries to be light-hearted, but it sort of fails.

Eric chuckles again anyway.

Flip’s squadron walks through the river, holds their guns above their heads so nothing gets wet. Flip’s thankful that it’s not raining today, not pouring on their heads. Instead he’s just got the sun that filters through the green trees, the sun that shines in his eyes. They trudge on.

“Did she send you more tapes?” Eric asks, hope in his voice.

You send the squadron something every chance you get, every fucking chance, and Flip is grateful for it. Twice a month he gets letters, a package, and most importantly, cassette tapes from you. He’s always amazed at how much shit you can cram into a container no bigger than a shoebox, but you do it.

The letters he keeps for himself, the tapes are 50/50. You always send four, four small black cassette tapes that you’ve recorded yourself. Two are just you, just talking. Telling him about your day, telling him about home.

Sometimes you tell him good things, sometimes you tell him bad things. That’s life, you always say, good and bad things. He listens to them over and over again, memorizes the messages, pictures your face making the shapes of the letters, pictures how your eyes shine as you talk.

The third one is music, always music. Always a new song, never any repeats. A mix of things that are popular back home, popular around the country. Flip’s told you he plays those during the day when things are calm and there’s no immediate threat. You took that as inspiration to broaden your horizons, keeping up with the popular music all across the country as opposed to just Colorado Springs. You said you wanted to boys to have some link to home, even a thousand miles away.  

The fourth one is you reading out loud, usually a collection of poems, or a passage from a book. He likes to play those for the boys at night, it helps them sleep. If he was being honest, it helps Flip sleep, but he shares it for the boys. It reminds them of a mother they don’t have anymore reading a bedtime story. When they hear you speak, it’s not like they’re sleeping in the jungle, or in a hut somewhere in the dirt – it’s like they’re home in bed.

“Yeah, I’ll play them when we settle for the day.” Flip says after all that, and Eric beams.

“Keep moving.” His commander shouts, making Flip wince.

He casts his eyes upwards to the tops of trees, knowing that the enemy could be hiding and they wouldn’t know it.

They wouldn’t know it.

  “…All war is wrong. The grass

here is green and buttoned

down with dandelions. A car

goes by. What peace. It–

the war–goes on. Fleeing

people. The parrot tulips

look like twisted guts.

Blood on green.

Here, a silent scream…”

 It’s dark, nighttime, finally.

They’ve settled in the mud for the eighth night in a row, and Flip thinks to himself he can’t wait for a bed. He should be on the helicopter tomorrow, he thinks to himself as he lays awake in the dark, lying on his back. He thinks of all the good things he’ll have when he’s home, a hot meal, a clean pair of socks. He thinks about the station, how CSPD is getting along without him. He thinks about his favorite brand of coffee in the percolator, thinks about the mountains.  

He closes his eyes, thinks about you. It’s the only thing that keeps him sane anymore.

In his mind’s eye, you’re wearing that white dress he loves you in. You’re laughing at something he said, at one of his snide remarks about something on the news. In his mind, you’re eating frozen grapes, slicing them between your front teeth and offering him half. He takes it straight out of your mouth with his own teeth, kisses you in the process.

In his mind’s eye, you smile against his lips and kiss him back, weaving your hands together. His were so much larger than yours, and you loved that, often pressing the palms together to make a note of the difference. Flip could curl his hand around yours easily, and he does then.

In the real world, things aren’t as nice. He’s mostly angry, mostly annoyed. He hates being here, pissed at the draft.

He wishes he had gone to college, wishes he had done something other than go straight to work after high school. But he had wanted to start a family with you right away, wanted to marry you and buy you a house and and and.

You weren’t happy, when barely two years into the marriage he was whisked away by the draft. You weren’t happy, and that made his stomach turn more than any of the violence he saw here.

There’s the soft call of the jungle all around him, and all around him are anxious boys who can’t sleep. Flip plays your tape, they listen to your poetry, until –

“Fuck – everyone get – ” His commander shouts, cut off by the sound of a gurgle.  

Bullets whizz past, startling everyone into action. They’ve been found, of course they had been. Flip’s already shooting back before he really can process what’s happening. He thinks of you as the sound of his gun echoes in his brain, the flash from the firing causing his vision to go spotty.

They were so close to the nearest village, so fucking close, Flip thought as he fired his gun, finger squeezed on the trigger tight, mowing down whatever and whoever he could. So close to being at the base, to getting on a fucking helicopter and heading home.

That’s all he wants anymore, is to head home, to head to you.

“On your left!” One of the other boys, Sam screams, alerts Flip to the man creeping up near him.

He kills him, he and Sam and Eric all back to back, just fucking shooting and shooting.

Your voice is still playing on the cassette tape player, it fucks him up to hear it against all the fucking chaos. It was just quiet a minute ago, how the fuck was it so loud? Screaming, so much screaming, both sides wounding one another.

Flip hated war, hated it as he fired round upon round into the fucking dark, hated it as the dirty sweat dripped into his eyes, down the tip of his nose. Hated it as he ran out of ammo, as he had to duck behind a tree and reload.

He hated it as his hands didn’t shake anymore, reloading the gun.

There’s running, so much running. They can’t stay, not where they are. But they can’t see either, pitch black in the middle of the night. Flip grabbed the cassette player and shoved it in his pocket and ran, hoped that the boys kept up with him.

No one is giving orders – there aren’t any to give, none except shoot and hope they don’t shoot you.

So, Flip shoots.

After what seems like hours, it’s quiet again.

They’re all panting, all of them who are left standing.

“Sound off!” Flip shouts, because he’s the only one who can. “Zimmerman.” He starts, waiting for the others to make themselves known, mark themselves as alive.

“Costell.” Eric shouts.

“Daniels.” Sam continues.

“Rocco.”

“Marques.”

“Dereon.”

One by one the squadron calls out their name, but Flip is listening to the silence in between it.

Half their men are dead, including their commander.

Everything is fucked.

Your voice still sounds on the cassette player.

  “Can we, in simple justice,

desert our sought allies?

Draw out: I do not know.

I know the war is wrong.

We have it in us

to triumph over hate and

death, or so

the suburban spring suggests.”

 The plane ride back home is long, but Flip’s never been more grateful.

It’s a twenty-hour flight to Denver, and then an hour bus ride to Colorado Springs.

He’s out of the jungle and into the sky, but it all feels the same to him, reminds him of another helicopter ride. But this time, he’s clean, in a clean formal uniform, and the lack of mud in between his toes is a blessing that Flip can’t deny.  

“Where are you headed?” A man seated next to him asks.

It’s a flight full of soldiers, all heading home to their own towns, their own cities. No one else is staying in Colorado, Flip is sure of it, from all their accents.

The man next to him has an eye-patch on and a crooked smile, an attempt at friendliness in a situation where something like that was lost in the vacuum of terror.

“Colorado Springs, home to my wife.” Flip responds, and fuck the thought of it actually happening has his heart pounding in his chest. He looks to the man next to him and gives the courtesy of asking back, “You?”

“Wife and kids waiting for me back in Oklahoma.” The man grins happily, “You have any kids of your own?”

“No not yet.” Flip answers, feeling old. This man must not be much older than him, early thirties just like him, and already with two kids.

Flip feels like he’s wasted a lot of time, fighting in this fucking war.

The man shakes his head, noting Flip’s souring expression.

“Believe me it’s better off that way, nothing like the guilt of a kid who misses their dad.” He tsks, smile fading.

“How old?” Flip is compelled to ask, just because there is something so freeing about talking about anything other than the war.

“Seven and five, here,” The man pulls out a small photograph from his breast pocket, hands it to Flip. “That’s them, and my wife, Imani.”

They look so happy, in the picture, wearing their Sunday best.

“You have a gorgeous family.” Flip says honestly, pulling out the pocketwatch, opens it and shows your picture to this man, shows it to anyone and everyone he meets. “This is my wife, (Y/N).”

“I’m happy to say the same about yours.” The man’s smile returns, and Flip takes a breath. “Are you going straight home?” He asks, and Flip nods.

“It’s a Wednesday, so she’s going to be at the grocery store, and then the dry cleaners. She’s not going to get home until four o’clock or something, and I’m supposed to get home at three, so I’m hoping to surprise her.” Flip knew your schedule like the back of his hand, and recited it easily.

He had a whole plan, was praying that the timing would work out and that he’d be home and he’d be there to greet you.

“She doesn’t know you’re coming home this early?” The man asks, making Flip huff out a nervous laugh.

“No, I didn’t want to give her a date and then crush her hopes if it didn’t happen.” He explains and the man makes a sound of realization.  

“I bet she’ll be thrilled.” He says.

“I’m hoping.” Flip says back, the conversation coming to a comfortable silence.

  “…Here, the drive is wet

with mist. There,

the war goes on. Children

are more valuable than

 The voice recording stops, just as the taxi cab pulls up to the house.

He’s been listening to it over and over, listening to it so much the tape has started to worn down. The flight had been grueling, the bus ride even more so, but the taxi ride was the thing that made him the most nervous.

What if he pulled up and you were already there? What if he pulled up and you weren’t, but you didn’t come home? What if you had plans for the evening, what if you didn’t want to see him anymore, what if you hated him, what if what if what if –

The taxi cab pulls up to the house, and your car isn’t there in the driveway. His car and his truck both are under a sheet, kept protected from the dust and the snow and the rain. He had missed the snow.

Flip gets out, thanks the driver who says nothing in return.

“How much do I owe you?” He asks, fishing out his wallet, ready to pay this man just about anything.

“I don’t want any of your blood money.” The man surprises him by saying with such anger in his voice that it’s all he can do not to punch the glass out of the divider.

Flip gets out, stunned by the response. He has his small suitcase of personal items, and that’s about it. The taxi drives away.

He doesn’t has his house keys on him – why would he? – so he crouches down and finds the spare hidden under a fake rock, uses it to unlock the door.

Stepping over the threshold is like a smack to the face, and before he knows it, he’s crying.

He spent so much time thinking about being home, he had almost forgotten what home was even like, and now, stepping into the foyer, it all became real to him that this wasn’t a dream. This wasn’t in his mind’s eye, this was real.

There was the wonky floorboard that always creaked if you put too much pressure on it. There was the big tan couch and the glass coffee table and the soft rug by the fireplace. He ran his hand along the wall as he walked the familiar path to the kitchen, and tears are dripping down his cheek as he lifts the glass cover of the cake stand and steals a chocolate chip cookie.

It had been years since he’d had a cookie.

He looks at the clock, exactly where it’s always been, and it chimes at four, exactly as it always does.

Flip freezes when he hears the front door open, swallows the cookie so fast he’s afraid he’s going to choke, stands in the middle of the kitchen and doesn’t know what to do with his hands.

Two years in the war, and he suddenly feels like a teenager again, not knowing what to do with his hands.

He wonders how you’ve changed, because of course you’ve changed in the two years he’s been gone. He wonders how long your hair is, what you’re wearing. He wonders what you’ve been eating, what you’ve been watching. You tell him in your voice messages, but that’s only twice out of the month; he wants to know everything, wants to hear all of it.

You enter the kitchen and you freeze at the sight of him, you drop the bags of groceries like you’ve seen a ghost.

The two of you just stare at each other for a moment, and he can’t stop the tears of relief from flowing as he takes in the sight of you; you look exhausted but you’re healthy, you’re alive, you’re in front of him in your home that you share with him and you’re wearing his flannel tucked into your skirt. You’re wearing his clothes.

Something about the sight of you in his clothes make his knees go weak and he’s afraid he’s going to fall.

“Flip?” You whisper, don’t dare talk too loudly.

He wonders what’s going on in your head, but all he can think about is you’re here, you still want him, you still love him.

“Hi ketsl.” Flip whispers back, and just like that you’re crossing the room and crying in his arms.

Just like that you’re holding him tight and kissing him, kissing him like you never thought you’d kiss him again. You’re practically climbing him, jumped up onto him and wrapping your legs around his waist, kissing and kissing and kissing him.

Just like that, he lets himself cry, lets himself bury his face into your neck and breathe in the smell of you, smells the citrus and the familiar laundry detergent and shampoo.

Just like that Flip finally feels at peace.

Just like that, Flip’s home.

the   berkowitz   family name has long been one that holds prestige & power . among the 1% for over a century . they are a prominent banking family that has had their hands in the pots of nearly every big banking company across the nation . coming into the united states after word broke of the california gold rush back in 1849 , the berkowitz brother’s were of the lucky few to acquire pounds of gold by the thousands . later founding what would become a leading investment bank known as berkowitz capital . the generations to follow would capitalize on the head start given to them by the two brothers . expanding the family company as well as the knowledge of the family name through heavy involvement in politics alongside the kennedy’s . since as early as 1953 there has always been a berkowitz family member actively appointed to a political role ( governor , senator , representative , us ambassador , etc ) . although the families roots within the states are documented in the capital of california , as generations went on they made their way over to the east coast , with most of the family members now residing in southern florida . 

the   rachelson   family is a prominent political family . synonymous with power & eloquence . with their rise initially taking place in the british parliament . many escaped to england from germany between 1933-1935 . they hadn’t settled into the states until jocelyn rachelson ( jalissa’s maternal grandmother ) was appointed the united kingdoms ambassador to the united states in 1987 . the rachelson’s have since had heavy involvement in the us government , both behind the scenes and at the forefront . much of the rachelson family have stayed within the european union ( germany & poland ) as well as england . although the few that followed jocelyn to the states now reside in washington dc and the tri-state area .

henry & austen had met through their mutual friends . it didn’t take long before the two became a rather public couple , a supercouple if you would ( similar to that of a brangelina of the 1% ) . although they’d met in new york the two decided that when it was time to start a family they wanted to move to hilton grove , an island austen had eyed for years . instead they found themselves moving down to fort lauderdale where henry had grown up . before they knew it , they were three kids deep in settling down in fort lauderdale . austen’s anger from never wanting to build a life in florida started to tumble into the relationship & the daily life of the family & so in an effort to recover the marriage henry agreed to moving the family up to hilton grove , where they have resided ever since .

jalissa was born the second of three children and oh boy does she suffer from middle child syndrome , riddled with a envy and a need to be in the mix . the berkowitz household , although , from the outside looking in looked like a fabulous family life was anything but . jalissa , like her siblings , was born on a pedestal & what came attached with that was even higher expectations from her parents . her parents found a way to be extremely authoritarian & uninvolved all at the same time . they were very dismissive if you disappointed them & everything jalissa did seemingly did just that .

for a long time she was obsessed with getting her parents approval , she’d turned life into a silent competition between herself & her siblings . she befriended only the people her parents approved of , did all the events they asked her to do , did everything she could to excel academically & only dated people who were of benefit to her parents ( people who’s parents where also in high places ) . 

during highschool she joined the model un , debate team , and soccer team . if it were up to jalissa & not her parents she’d probably had joined the cheerleading team but her mother would never let that fly . it was too “ self indulgent “ to fit the family brand ( if only she’d known what would be coming years later lol ) .

it wasn’t until she was seventeen that she started to deviate from her parents wishes . of course , the catalyst to this was a boy , one her parents hadn’t really approved of but jalissa was completely head over heels for him . he really helped her boost her confidence to be her own person ? and not allow her parents to treat her like a puppet . with his encouragement she started her youtube channel , something she’d wanted to do for years but her mother had shot down the idea anytime jalissa brought it up . it was once again too “ self indulgent ” . the channel known as callmejalissa was an outlet for her , talking to a camera was the most heard she’d felt in seventeen years of her life . and god she knew that was hella sad . she really grew to view her subscribers as family & by the time her channel was brought to her parents attention ( more like her mothers , her dad had found her channel just four months after she’d made it and promised not to tell her mother so long as she was smart about what she posted ) she was about to turn eighteen and there wasn’t much they could do to stop her from doing it .

at eighteen she’d graduated highschool salutatorian with offers from university of pennsylvania & brown university . in all honesty she didn’t wnat to go to college , she saw it as a complete waste of her time . it wasn’t like she was going to do anything with the degree anyways . it would simply be a point of bragging for her parents at events & at this point she really could care less about them being able to brag to their friends . she knew she had to play along though , because this was the same year she was going to receive her first half of her trust fund ( a whoopin 500m , yes her trust fund in total will be 1b her parents are grossly wealthy guys ) so she bamboozled ? her parents , promising she’d committed to attending penn just so they’d allow for the money to be released to her account . she moved out of the house , literally moving into a house of her own a couple blocks from her parents house & claimed she was living in pennsylvania for college . we stan a sneaky binch .

two months later her parents were at her front door , though , ready to give her an ear full . her mother basically disowned her at this point . telling her how every year jalissa found a new way to be a bigger disappointment . her dad kind of played good cop , like he normally would because her mother often dug into her pretty deeply . to the point where any insecurity ( even though with the way she carries herself you’d never think she has any ) she has stems from something her mother has said / called her in the past . if henry berkowitz had a soft spot , it was certainly jalissa , it that had only grown clearly with the harsher austen became on the girl .

a few months before her nineteenth birthday a sex tape was released of jalissa cheating on her boyfriend at the time . it was a drunken mistake she’d made around the time of her mother basically disowning her , but that explanation did suffice for her boyfriend who inevitably broke things off with her . although this was a horrific time she’d received an abundance of offers to film more tapes . it was enticing to say the least . she was someone who loved intercourse but also had this deeply rooted desire to get back at her mother ? and what better way to do so then to something so far left from what her mother was about . this was next level disappointment in the eyes of austen berkowitz . the only thing that made sense ( in her mind ) was to dive head first into the porn industry .

like you’d expect her parents had a fit when they found out about her new career choice . although her internet fame had soared to new heights and her youtube & instagram followers were loving every second of this move . her mom was currently serving as governor and has since not been able to get elected in the political world since jalissa became one of the top porn stars around . they basically blacklisted her & jalissa feels no remorse , she’s gone so far as telling her mother “ sucks to be shunned , huh? ” .

although it took her dad a while to come around , he cares far too much to shut her out . 

not to long after jalissa & her best friend started their podcast tickets to our downfall , it’s a mix of call her daddy & the basement yard , basically two besties talking on a level that most people wouldn’t want to leave the privacy of their own space , giving advice , hoe tricks , and telling funny stories of their past . it a total hit & one of jalissa’s favorite things to do .

From the land

Today I am leaving the ocean and heading to the land.  The Big Island is even more biodiverse than Maui.  It contains 11 of the 14 climate zones in the world.  They even have snow on their tallest peak, Mauna Kea.  Today I am heading south og Kona to explore a Chocolate Farm, a coffee farm and a bee apiary!

Chocolate Farm

The Original Hawaiian Chocolate factory is the only chocolate producer in an industrialized country that processes the chocolate from the plant all the way to the final product.  Most chocolate producers start with the dried cocoa bean.  The beautiful estate grows cacao (the pod that chocolate is made from), macadamia nuts and coffee.  The entire operation is run by only eight staff, including the owner (Bob) and his wife.  (American Ex-pats)

Above are the tree that the cacao pods grow on.  They are about the size of a large eggplant when fully ripe.  Iniside these pods there is a fibrous membrane (like in a squash) that contains seeds.  These seeds have to be fermented and dried to give them the chocolate flavor.  This produces chocolate nibs which are ground to make cocoa powder, which becomes chocolate.  (More or less, you can google it if you want to fact check me on this one.)

Ripe cacao pods.  They grow in a variety of colors.  For example green pods turn yellow when ripe, maroon pods turn candy apple red when ripe.  Other colors include purple, orange and rainbow!

These are the seeds (or cocoa beans) inside of the pod.  They are covered with a bitter coating that will help ferment the seeds.

After they have fermented, they are cleaned off and left outside to dry on these racks.

Cocoa beans on the drying rack.  These will be ground to make the cocoa powder used to make chocolate!  This chocolate farm only makes milk and dark chocolate.

Fun fact:  White chocolate is not actually made from the solid bean, it is made from cocoa butter, which is extracted from the bean.  Since there are no cocoa butter extractors on the island, they are limited to milk and dark chocolate only.

It was really interesting to see this done as a small operation, given the extremely unjust conditions that many cacao growers face in developing countries.  At least one aspect of eating chocolate was guilt-free today! m On to cofee next!

Coffee Farm

There is a oot of coffee grown in Hawaii so I had lots of options for a coffee tour.  No one will be surprised to hear that I chose the Kona Historic Socity’s Living History coffee farm!!  YEA!  The nerdiest of an already nerd activity!

So...the Kona Historical Society has preserved one of the early coffee farms on the island that was run by a Japanese family.  It was purchased by the Ushida family in 1913.  The Ushida’s had immigrated from Japans and decided to take up farming.  However, they had no experience farming coffee when they bought the coffee farm in 1913.  The spent the next few years learning from local farmers how to grow it.  This was the beginning of what we know know as the Kona coffee industry, which was led mostly by Japanese immigrants.  The Ushida’s were one of the first Japanese families to do it and encouraged and inspired many other to take up the trade throughout the 20th century.

Fun fact:  In the 1940s 50% of people living in Hawaii were Japanese.

The Ushida’s tore down the small farmhouse that was on the property when they purchased it and built a traditional Japanese home.  The Ushida’s had 5 children, who all shared a three room house (a iving area, bedroom and kitchen).

To be totally honest, I had absolutely no idea how coffee grew.  I knew it came from beans, but that was about it.  Well...it grows on trees.  Coffee trees can live and produce coffee for hundreds of years, in fact.  Coffee beans actually form inside of these cmall round berries.  (They sort of look like cranberries.)  They are green when unripe and turn a bright red color when ripe.  Inside each berry is a small amount of flesh (similar to grapes) and in the center is a coffee bean.  In order to make coffee, the berries have to be picked, the skin and flesh need to be removed, the beans need to be dried and then they can be roasted.  Coffee beans are harvested 4 months out the year from September - December.

Coffe tree.  The base of this tree is over 100 years old.  The branches are trimmed every few years, but the base and root systems can remain for hundreds of years.

Coffee berries.  These are small because the are yound.  They are about cranberry sized.  The will grow to be closer to grape size when it is time to harvest next September.

The Ushida’s also grew other plants for subsistence farming and to sell at local markets.  Although the weather in Hawaii is perfect for growing almost anything, it can sometime be difficult to farm because of the lava rock that covers most of the land.  Plants that do very well in Hawaii have extremely strong root systems that can actually break through the rock or grow within cracks a crevasses in the rock.  (Like coffee, cacao and pineapple).

It’s a baby pineapple!  It’s one of the only plants, where if you plant any part of the pineapple it is capable of growing a new one.

This may look like a cucumber, but it is actually a plant that grows bath loofahs.  Yep, for real.

See!?!  I didn’t make this up.

During the 4 month harvesting season, the Ushida men would wake up at 2:30 to start harvesting and finish after sunset.  The women would wake up at 4:30am.  The entire family, including small chilren, would harvest the beans.  The most difficult part of the process was removing the skin and flesh from the beans.  It is only since WWII that most farmers had a mechanized process to do it.  For centuries it was done by stomping on them with your feet.  Like grapes.

Once the beans are removed from the berries, they need to be dried, which can take up to 10 days.  The Ushida’s would leave them out in the sun to dry and bring them into the shed when it rained and at night.  At any given time there would be over 1000 pounds of beans drying.  (On average, an adult could pick 150 lbs. a day).  In the 1940 the Ushida’s developed a brillant idea to create a drying platform on the top of the barn/shed that had a sliding roof, so that they could cover the beans at night or during rain and not have to carry the beans in.  Genius.  This is the original roof and the sliding mechanism still works perfectly!

Kona coffee is still an institution in Hawaii.  Descendants of the Ushida family lived in the original house until 1994.  (They never modernized the house, it still had a wood burning stove and outhouse/outdoor bath house)  The historical society bought it and preserved it.  It is still a working farm today.

L&L Barbeque is Hawaiian fast food institution.  I stopped here for lunch and was not disappointed.  Many of the things on the menu reflect the Asian and Japanese heritage of the island.  I ordered the chicken lovers platter, BBQ chicken,  Chicken katsu and...something else delicious.

Bees

My last stop for the day was Big Island Bees.  A bee apiary.

I have always been obsessed with bees (and colony animals in general, like ants) so I was SO EXCITED about this.  I have probably told many of you this, but the U of M refused to let me volunteer at their bee lab and I am still really bitter about it.

Kim, the master Bee keeper, gave us free samples and showed us the hives.  They have several sites across the island that produce different kinds of honey.  There are two ways to get flavored honey.  One is to infuse a flavor into already created honey, like pepper or cinnamon.  The other is to place the hives in a area where they have access to only one or prodominantly one kind of flower.  Their bees make three kinds of honey.  One from Macadamia Nut trees, one from the Wilelaiki blossom on theChristmasberry tree (introduced in Hawaii from Brazil) and the rareist type, the Lahua blossom honey, which comes from the Ohi’a trees.  Ohi’a trees are found only on Hawaii and grow out of lava rock.  The honey is naturally white.  (Apparently you can buy Big Island Honey at costco!)

So I learned a lot of cool stuff about bees.  I could write for hours about it, but I’m just going to give you my favorite fun facts.  If you want to know more, let’s hang out!

Fun fact 1: Queens can live for 1-5 years, where as the rest of the bees in the hive only live 4-8 weeks.

Fun fact2:  All of the worker bees in the hive are female.  The only male bees in the hive are called Drones.  Their only job is to mate with the Queen, so when the food is scarce or the hive is in trouble, the female workers bees evict the Drones by biting off their wings, pushing them out of the hive and leaving them on the ground to die.  Sorry fellas, they don’t have time for freeloaders!  I love bees!

Fun fact 3:The worker bees go through four different jobs in their short lives 1) Take care and feed of the baby bees, which hatch in the cells in the hive, feed and take care of the queen, protect the hive, and forage for pollen.

Fun fact 4: Bees are super ruthless, if the queen is not doing so hot, the hive releases special pharamones (sp?) so that the queen will give birth to her own replacement and then they will kill the queen once she’s born.  Total mutiny.  

Not so fun fact 5: Bees are in trouble because of a small hive mite that has starting taking over the hives, laying eggs in the cells and eventually forcing the bees out of the hive.  Hives have to be checked and treated regularly to keep from being infested by these small invasive beetles from Asia.  Boo!

One hive.  It contains both the cells for honey and for making baby bees.  This hive has no drones, because it is a slow honey producer, so they opted to kill all of the drones until they have more honey.

Lastly, bees can make art.  Their so cool and talented.  I am ecited because my goal for this spring and summer is to plant a pollinator friendly yard.  I applied for a grant to do, I will know shortly if I got it.  My eventual goal would be to have a hive in my yard, but it is really hard to overwinter bees in Minnesota, so I might have to work up to this.  Future goals...

I was going to make a pit stop before heading over to his place. I wanted dango and I figured that he'd want some as well. I stopped in front of the shop and looked at the different signs of each dango. The redhead that worked there skipped out of the back and placed a new batch of what I assumed of pink dango out in the front. She glanced over at me and brightened considerably.

"Hey Sho! What's up? You're here pretty early, you gotta job you're doing?" Hami asked walked over behind the cash register and grabbing a small bag for me.

"Yeah, I've become an assistant teacher so I'll be heading over to get Takeshi and then heading to the training grounds. You got any thermoses today?" I asked kneeling down to look at the bottles that she makes and fills with tea to sell.

"You know I do! I've also tried to make a grape dango, it's a lavender color, you wanna try." I sprang up, my eyes most likely sparkling.

"Of course!" The girl giggled and I watched as her grey body left my sight. Picking up one of the sticks of green tea dango and looked down at it. ~Takeshi Uchiha's Pov~

I sat in my piano room, looking out the two windows that were in place instead of walls. I could see the whole forest past the city. When it rained Itachi and I would end up in here during the nights so we could sleep. Turning the mahogany instrument, I ran my fingers across the keys and smiled. Closing my eyes I started pressing the keys and turning them into an old song I used to play for my mother.

Whenever she felt like she was trapped she asked me to play this for her. It wasn't the best and I've perfected it since then, but even if there were wrong notes or I was off beat she said that it always reminded her of adventure. It reminded her of what traveling to different villages was like and how their culture was much more different than ours. She told me that I should never let anyone chain me down, whether village, family, or friends. Itachi would always agree to her logic but would say that I shouldn't completely sever my ties with those things. I should grow bonds between them and when out on adventures make new friends. Those two were the wisest people I knew. They had a true love for everyone and didn't let anyone contort their views or conform to society. I finished the song and watched as water droplets splashed onto my hand. Smiling, I allowed myself to cry a bit and let my heart soften for once.

I missed them so much. I miss Itachi, I miss mom, but I miss Sasuke the most. He's here with me and I can't even reach him. I can't reach my own twin. We were supposed to be there for each other no matter what and now he can't even look at me without hatred. Letting out a painful sob, I placed my hands on the piano to keep myself up from crumbling into a ball then and there. I shouldn't be this depressed so early in the morning, but then again my emotions never listen to me. I finally composed myself and wiped away the remaining tears on my face. I took in a deep breath and stood from my seat. Stepping back into my living room, I heard the door unlock and watched with caution. Shoko stepped through with his normal chakra signal and all.

I relaxed and smiled at the male who held up a small baggy. Chuckling I watched as he dumped his stuff on my kitchen table.

"So what's in the bag?" I asked about to grab the small baggy. He slapped my hand and gave me a stern look.

"Don't touch." He commanded. I whined a bit before yawning. I waddled back over to the couch and collapsed on it. Itachi walked out of my bedroom and trotted over to the living room to watch Shoko as usual.

The white-haired male grabbed two plates from my cabinet and set them on the table. He grabbed the baggy and pulled out some dango. He placed four on mine since I wasn't a huge fan of sweet things. He placed a black thermos next to my plate and unloaded everything else onto his.

"Alright, now you can eat." He stated. Rolling my eyes, I stood up and walked over letting my body drop into the seat. I watched as Shoko pulled out a white thermos and poured some of his tea into the cap.

"Shouldn't we be at the training grounds by now?" Shoko shook his head.

"There's no reason to be, Kakashi would be there until like ten." He said with a shake of his head. He grabbed on the dango sticks and managed to get all of the mochi in his mouth at once. I laughed and took the strawberry dango and at it first. Shoko let out some noise of remembrance that's honestly too hard to describe so I watched as he sifted through the small pocket on his bag before he pulled out a keychain and handed it to me. I looked at it and let out a snicker.

"This is so like you Shoko, thanks I love it." I looked up at the guy with a soft expression. He blushed and smiled at me.

"I'm glad you do!" For the rest of the time, we ate in silence, with Itachi meowing every once and a while for a piece. I finished my dango first and was sipping my Earl Grey tea in our comfortable silence. Shoko was on his last one and the tea he was drinking was basically finished. It was nice to sit here like an old married couple who didn't need to exchange words to make the atmosphere around them nice. Once he was finished, I grabbed my bag putting all of my leather-bound books in there along with a few scrolls before heading out with my best friend.

~At The Training Grounds, 9:10 AM~

We arrived at the training grounds and saw Sakura, Naruto, and Sasuke sitting down all of them close to dozing off. Naruto and Sakura noticed Shoko and me and jumped up in anger.

"You're late!" Shoko shrugged and set his stuff on the ground next to the gate.

"Well, Kakashi won't be here until like ten so I would just suggest that you rest those pretty little eyes of yours!" Shoko said with a devious tone. The three didn't notice but complied with Shoko's wishes anyway. Takeshi sets his stuff down next to Sasuke and headed over to the open area with the three standing poles. I sat in front of the lake and smiled at it. I dipped my hands in it and swirled it around my hands. I thought for a bit before taking my hand out. Stretching I laid back and turned on my side resting my head on my hand. Closing my eyes I let my mind wander and my body relaxes as I slipped into a nice, light sleep. I was awoken by a tap on my shoulder, three screams, and laughing. I groaned in annoyance and glared up at a shinobi. Possibly chunin. I rose an eyebrow and sat up.

"I'm assuming you're here for info?" The shinobi nodded. I stood and dusted the sand off of my clothes. Walking over to where Sasuke, Naruto, and Sakura were, I saw that they were completely drenched and my bag sitting across them, completely dry. Shoko was laughing his butt off at the three of them. They looked like shivering chihuahuas. Rolling my eyes, I knelt down and dug past the multiple other leatherbound books and found a red one. This one had all of the places that I've researched. "Alright, where are you going?" I asked looking up at the Chunin.

"I'm delivering something to the Kazekage. I haven't heard the best things about him, so what do you got?" He asked placing a hand on his hip. I snorted and started flipping through the worn pages.

"Yeah, the Kazekage isn't a saint." Stopping on a page that is supposed to have the information, I realized I grabbed the wrong book.

"Ah, sorry, grabbed the wrong book. That's about the layout of the land, the people one is...here." Pulling out a brown leather notebook I flipped to the exact page and started reading the information of the Kazekage out loud.

"Alright, well, the Kazekage is named Rasa. When the daimyo took money away from Suna and started using Konoha's less expensive services, the Kage felt threatened. He wanted to strengthen the line of shinobi so he ordered a woman name Chiyo to seal Shukaku, the One-Tailed Beast, into his youngest son, Garra, so he'd be the ultimate weapon of Suna. His wife died in the process of giving birth. He taught the kid ninjutsu ordered someone to look after him and ostracized him from his siblings who name are Temari and Kankuro. Sadly Rasa realized too late how bad of an idea this was as Garra's powers started to manifest. With the village being at an all-time low and the council deeming Garra useless to them, Rasa wanted to assassinate his younger son. All six attempts failed." Snapping the book closed I looked up to the disgusted Chunin.

"That good enough?" I asked looking up at the guy. He nodded, seemingly deep in thought before looking me in the eyes.

"Ok, so what do you want?" He asked.

"I want information on the youngest son. Even though I have some of the events of his life because of Rasa, I need more, if you can't get that, then you can pay me by 5000 Ryo. Fair?" The chunin nodded.

"Fair, thanks, kid." Nodding the man disappeared from my sight. I felt five pairs on me. I looked up connecting with Sasuke who looked confused and angry, Naruto who looked interested, Sakura who looked wary, Shoko looked excited it's hard to read him sometimes, and turning around I looked at Kakashi who stared at me with a hardened stare. Letting out an annoyed sigh, I placed both books back in my bag and stood, turning to Kakashi.

"Morning, Kakashi-sensei." The three other genins on my team snapped their attention towards the silverette.

"Hey guys, good morning!" Kakashi-sensei greeted giving them a closed eye smile.

"YOU'RE LATE!!!!" Sakura and Naruto shouted. Kakashi waved the two off and walked over to the three logs. Gesturing us over he set a clock on a stump and set it for noon. I grabbed my bag and jogged over standing next to Sasuke. Shoko stood next to Kakashi and held up three bells just like the older male beside him.

"Here are three bells your task is to take them from either me or Shoko before time's up." He explained. I tilted my head and looked at the bells closer. Shoko is the same age as us and even though he's a Jonin it doesn't mean that he's the strongest out of all of us. There has to be some sort of catch to this.

"Those who don't have a bell by noon get no lunch. I'll not only tie you to one of those stumps I'll eat in front of you too." Kakashi said tying the bells back to his pants. I heard the stomachs of my teammates grumble and snickered slightly. Glad I ate before Shoko got there along with his dango treats.

"You only have to get one bell there are only three, so one of you will definitely be tied to the stump! The person who doesn't take a bell will fail so one of you will definitely be heading back to the academy. If you want to you can use shuriken and kunai to come at us. You won't succeed unless you approach us with the intent to kill!" Shoko explained a large smile on his face. I gave him a skeptical look along with the bells that hung from his belt. There are six bells in all, but they kept saying the number three. If that's the case and there are only three true bells, then a set has to be a fake, and with the knowledge that Shoko is still technically on our level and that most of the team will go after him first then it would have to be Kakashi who has the real ones. I snapped out of my daze when Shoko disappeared from my site. Naruto was the only one left beside me and Kakashi was in front.

"Ah, right, we're taking a test," I muttered. Jumping away from the commencing battle, I settled in a tree and thought my plan over.

We're up against two Jonin, one genin could never take either one on alone even if the other is our age. This object of this is obviously teamwork. Now factoring in that one of the sets of bells is a fake then that means we can team up with Shoko to take Kakashi down, I'll need to find the others and try to convince them, but it'll most likely be a lost cause. Naruto will be more focused on working alone and trying to prove himself as he is right now, Sakura will only work if Sasuke is with me, and Sasuke hates me. Going to Shoko seems to be the only option I have right now. Jumping down from my tree, I searched the forest for my white-haired friend. Sensory isn't my forte but I've been with Shoko for so long that his chakra has become distinguishable. Coming into a clearing I saw Shoko lazing around in a tree branch.

"Sho-chan!" I called, the male jumped before looking down at me and smirked. He jumped down to the ground and got into a fighting stance. I waved my hand in dismissiveness.

"I already know the ones you have are fake, now, do you want to team up?" I asked. He blinked before laughing and walking over. He tossed an arm around my shoulder.

"You really are amazing Take-chan, alright, let's team up!" Nodding I gestured him to follow. Trotting after me we walked through the forest until Shoko stopped. I turned and looked at him questionably. Hearing the rustling of the leaves I quickly got out my kunai. A female chunin dropped from the trees and waved at the two of us. Raising an eyebrow and tilted my head.

"What do you want?" Shoko hissed out. The female raised her hands in surrender.

"Just here for some info on the Land of Tea." I sat down and dug through my bag and pulled out the red book from earlier.

"Well, it's a country south to the Land of Fire and consists of two islands. It is home to the Wasabi family and the Wagarashi family and is unknown if there are any shinobi. It is called the Tea Country or Land of Tea because of all the tea-houses that are there. Now, I do want to inform you to go as far southeast as you can without leaving the Fire Country because there is an Akatsuki hideout to the southwest near the Land of Rivers border." She nodded and let out a sigh.

"Thanks, kid, so what's your fee?" I thought for a bit before smirking and putting the book away.

"You good at using Fire Jutsu?" The girl looked at me in confusion before nodding.

"Yeah, I am, it's my affinity. Why?"

"You wanna help me pass my test?" The chunin blinked and then laughed. She placed a hand on her hip and smiled at me.

~Later on, The Main Clearing, 11:50 PM~

Kakashi was sitting in the middle of the clearing disappointed in his students. He was most disappointed in Takeshi cause he hadn't seen the kid the entire time and it was only 40 minutes until the test was complete. He shook his head and sighed pulling out his Icha Icha Paradise.

"Earth Release: Earth Dragon God Blast!" A masculine voice shouted. Kakashi's eyes widened as the ground rumbles. A large, bronze dragon head peeks out of the ground and roars to reveal its lengthy stone body. Then it dives back under, traveling to Kakashi through the ground. When it finally reaches him it shoots up in full dragon form and smashes into him with an enormous force, exploding on contact. The explosion causes the dragon's bronze body to move outward with immense force. Kakashi lets out a labored breath and looks around frantically. He feels a liquid on his foot and looks down in panic. It was an oily substance that had covered the ground

"Fire Release: Bed of Fire Technique!!" A feminine voice exclaimed. Infusing his feet with chakra he jumped off just as the flames ignited. Stumbling as he landed he looked around in confused panic. Shoko stepped out and smirked at the jonin.

"Earth Release: Sudden Earth Strike!" He shouted sending a finger gun Kakashi's way. The ground that was covered in fire rises in the form of a hand and rushes forward. The hand attacks Kakashi and the male dodges narrowly each time. Deciding that going back to the water would be the best idea to extinguish the flame and soften the ground. The hand soon crumbled as it entered the water. He watches with wide eyes, as an unknown female step out from the forest.

"Fire Release: Incinerating Hail Technique!" By focusing her chakra into her hands, she lifts them skyward and creates a salvo of small fireballs that will rain down all around them, incinerating anything they touch. Since the fireballs have no solid state, they can only do damage by burning things. These fireballs are about half the size of her closed fist. Kakashi dodged the fireballs landing on the water and rushed towards land seeing that not many of them were falling around Shoko and the unknown female.

"Water Chains Technique!!" Takeshi finally made himself known as he stepped out of the shrubbery as Kakashi placed his first foot on the sand. The chains launched from the water and wrapped themselves around his wrist neck and ankles. He fell to his knees as the chains pulled down on him harshly. He was barely able to roll over but managed to do so and looked up at the sky. Takeshi came over and stood over him, legs on each side of his waist. The young Uchiha settled himself on Kakashi's waist. Grabbing the silverette’s wrists he placed them over his head and when they were set in place the chains tightened once again. Taking the bells from Kakashi's belt he smirked down at him as he placed them in his pocket. Kakashi blushed as Takeshi leaned down towards his face.

"Ne, ne, Kakashi, why don't we reenact one of the scenes from your book yeah?" He questioned in a sultry voice his lips just a hair away from Kakashi's. The timer rang and Takeshi smirked. He got off of Kakashi and walked over to Shoko and thanked the girl for her help. The girl vanished and the two boys walked over to the stumps as Shoko handed Takeshi his bag. Kakashi looked over at the two and let out an amused sound before getting up and following. Takeshi took his seat in between Naruto and Sasuke. Shoko took his between Sakura and Naruto even though he wasn't a student.

"I see you're a bit tied up, huh, Naruto?" Shoko asked giving the blonde a Cheshire grin. Naruto started kicking his legs in anger.

"You're the one who put me here!!!!" Takeshi leaned closer to his brother to avoid the thrashing legs. When Sasuke scooted farther away from him it chipped away at his heart. Kakashi stopped in front of the KIA Stone and crossed his arms looking down at all of us.

"You guys look really hungry, oh, and by the way something about the training. Well, there's no need for you guys to go back to the academy. Takeshi had a smile on his face and hi-fived Shoko who gave him a reassuring thumbs-up. The other three were also celebrating at the news.

"Yup, all three of you...should quit as shinobi!!" Takeshi froze before realizing something and sending the older male a questioning look.

"Wait, 'three?'" He asked. Kakashi nodded.

"Yes, Takeshi you were the only one to pass. It may not have been with your actual team but you understood the lesson and proved to have an amazing mind for coming up with a plan." The older Uchiha a blushed and turned away from everyone to avoid any more embarrassment.

"Quit as ninjas what does that mean?! Also, why was Takeshi the only one to pass?!? We couldn't get the bells but why do we have to quit?!" Naruto shouted almost busting my eardrums. Kakashi gave them a blank look.

"Because all of you are just punks who don't deserve to be ninjas."

~Takeshi Uchiha's Pov~

My eyes widened as Sasuke lunged forward. I moved quickly and wrapped my arms around his waist and pulled him back. He looked back at me in fury and swiped his kunai at my face to get away from me. I was lucky to dodge and only get a small scratch on my cheek. I snatched his wrist and turned his body around. He was straddling my waist and that allowed me to pin him to the ground and hold his hands above his head. I was putting all my focus into keeping him down since I'm not the strongest but it wasn't that hard since his legs were pinned around my waist as well. I grunted as he thrashed against me.

"Get off of me you waste of space!" Ok, that hurt. I glared down at him and held him tighter to the ground lowering my head next to his.

"No," I growled. Kakashi stepped forward and scoffed. Our attention was turned back to him. I lifted my head from the ground and felt the blood drip off my cheek.

"That's why you're a punk." He said looking down at Sasuke.

"Get off of Sasuke-kun!!" Sakura shouted at me. I closed my eyes and blocked her out. I know Kakashi was one to send kids back to the academy in a heartbeat and that's what terrified me. My eyes snapped open in shock Sasuke's glare being brought back to me. I launched myself off of him and stood my ground in front of the silverette. Kakashi looked down at me with a questioning look. I shoved the three bells into his chest and glared up at him.

"There!! Now they can't go back to the academy! There's a bell for each one! You already passed me so we're going together as a team!!" I demanded, Kakashi glared down at me.

"It's too late they already failed." My gaze turned stone cold and my face neutral.

"You said that if they had a bell then they would pass. It didn't matter if it was through teamwork or not, you said so. Teamwork may have been the goal of the test but those three have bells and you already said I passed. Are you going back on your word and being a lier then? Because I won't let your stupid test get in the way of them achieving their dreams." I growled out. Kakashi looked at me wide-eyed before narrowing them down at me.

"Why do you care so much?"

"Because if I don't no one else will," I stated. I clenched my hands as my gaze got fiercer as they stared into Kakashi's confused orbs.

"The village doesn't care about these kids. Sakura is a nobody amongst the crowd, Naruto is seen as a monster, and Sasuke is the prodigious Uchiha that everyone loves you really think they give a damn about these kids dreams and feelings!? I don't care if anyone remembers my dream, but I'll be damned if there's are forgotten. So you either let them pass or you stay a manipulative bastard." Kakashi stared at me in shock. I turned away and walked towards the stunned trio. Shoko looked at me with a sympathetic smile as he stood to his feet. Taking out a kunai, I cut Naruto's ropes. The blonde stumbled but regained his balance and looked back at me.

"Takeshi, your dream won't be forgotten."

"Huh?"

"I'll protect your dream and make sure you achieve it!" Naruto shouted beaming up at me. I looked down at him in shock but let a bittersweet smile spread across my face. I ruffled his hair.

"Thanks, Naruto-kun." From behind Naruto, Sakura shuffled up and glanced up at me every now and again.

"Um, I will too Takeshi-kun. I'll protect and help you achieve your dream." I smiled and she sent one back. Naruto looked down past me and glared at my younger brother.

"What about you Sasuke? He is your brother after all." Sasuke glanced up at me before looking back down at his lap.

"Hmph, fine." I felt like crying then and there. Sasuke probably didn't mean it but those words meant a lot to me. I heard Kakashi let out a soft laugh.

"You kids really are amazing. You all pass." Naruto shouted in joy wrapping his arms around my neck. I laughed a bit and twirled him around before setting him on the ground.

"You guys are the first ones to pass, but then again I've never seen such passion come from one boy that the entire team would band together. There was this saying that a friend of mine told me, 'Those who break the rules and codes of the ninja world are trash, but those who don't take care of their comrades are lower than trash.'" He stated before ruffling my hair.

I had finished my bowl a while ago and now was simply conversing with everyone. Sasuke seemed to remember as we arrived that he hated me and sat on the other side of everyone up against the wall so I couldn't sit next to him. I laughed at a joke made at Naruto's expense and then taken away from the conversation by a tap on my shoulder it was a male jonin this time and he asked about the Blood Country. I sifted through my back and opened the red book that I used earlier giving him all the information I had on the Land of Blood. He thanked me and gave me 6500 Ryo. Placing the money in my wallet I realized that the conversation between my team stopped. I turned and jumped slightly when they were all just staring at me like that.

"Um, do you need something?" I asked. Kakashi narrowed his eyes once again.

"Takeshi how do you have all of this information?" He questioned. I scratched my cheek and let out a hum.

"Well, I can't tell you where I get it all from, but I can tell you that I'm an Information Broker." Kakashi, Sakura, and Sasuke all choked on the food they were eating and I honestly think that Naruto was ignoring the conversation.

"A kid your age!?" Kakashi exclaimed.

"How is that even possible!?" Sakura followed. I shrugged my shoulders and asked for another bowl of Miso Pork Ramen to get out of the conversation quickly. As the night dragged on Sakura was the first to leave saying that she may worry her parents if she stays out too late. Naruto followed soon after saying that he wanted to train before going to bed. Shoko went simply because he was tired and Kakashi followed paying the bill since Sasuke and myself weren't going to eat anymore. Sitting in the heavy silence that surrounded my brother and me, I decided to head home myself. Pushing the soft flaps back, I made my way to my apartment.

"Takeshi!" Sasuke's voice shouted after me. I was shocked at first, but composed myself well enough and turned around. Sasuke jogged up to me and stopped about a yard away.

"What's up, Sasuke?" I replied turning around fully to face him.

"Why?" He muttered. I rose an eyebrow, my grip loosening on my satchel.

"'Why' what?" He glared at me.

"Why are you protecting my dream when it so obviously clashes with yours?" He asked harshly. I gave him a soft smile and let out a breath.

"Because everyone deserves a dream Sasuke, even if yours does clash with mine, I refuse to let that get in my way of keeping it safe. It's the reason I became an info broker." He looked at me questionably.

"I became an info broker shortly after you tossed me to the curb because I didn't share the hate you had for Itachi. I knew our big brother wouldn't do something like that, and being the determined little monster that I am I got to work. My dream was realized then. I wanted to bring Itachi back home so we could be a family again, and I knew that it rightfully clashed with yours but I wasn't going to force my dream onto you. Because even after you started hating me Sasuke, my love only grew for you." I sent him one last smile and turned on my heel heading back home. The night sky was sparkling and I felt light that evening. When I walked through the door Itachi, my cat was waiting for me. Smiling at him I headed back to my room with him following. I changed and climbed into bed with the Siberian cat jumping on at the end.

 In the UK a new certification Authority for WSET led to a change in titles for the documents you receive when you successfully pass a WSET exam. From now on “Certificate” has been replaced by “Award.”

 Every WSET center must have at least one WSET Certified Educator, who has gone through extensive training on teaching techniques. We have far exceeded that minimum, having sent ten of our instructors to this training.

  Diploma via Video

 Only six cities in the U.S. offer the WSET Diploma. If you’re not near one of them your options had been just home study or WSET’s Online Diploma Course. Now we have a third option: video participation in our Diploma classes via a Skype-like connection. There is no additional charge when you enroll in the home study course.

 Our recent students continued our excellent performances on the WSET Diploma Unit 3 (Light Wines) exam. Fifteen of 21 students passed the theory portion and 19 of 21 passed the tasting portion. This is far above the international pass rate (approximately 50%) for this difficult, day-long exam.

So You Say You've Taken a Wine Class? Is WSET So Different?

 Why do people take wine classes? Sometimes, just to meet other people. Otherwise, to learn to buy and to taste wine. To learn why what they like tastes that way (geography, chemistry, whatever). And to find other wines, maybe cheaper, they will like as much. No more aimless wandering through wine aisles, they think. No more what-am-I-tasting confusion.

 Oh, sure, most of the wines in the shop have numerical scores. Is that enough help? Will that 90-point wine taste better than that other 90-point wine? And how will either taste with your 85-point dinner? (Ever notice that the foods we buy don’t come with scores attached?)

 So, you’ve already taken a wine class? Let me guess. The instructor told some good jokes. He or she talked, you listened. You got a pile of handouts, maybe some maps. You tasted a bunch of wines. The wine made everyone get friendlier. More good jokes about the wines. End of class.

  WSET Professional Wine Expertise: Wine Buyers, International

 England is too far north to grow good wine grapes. But for centuries they have had royalty and nobility who wanted good wine and had the money to pay for it. Europe was very nearby and had lots of good wines. And England had colonies, ranging from America to Australia, some of which were beginning to make wine. The market responded and a profession was created.

 Wine professionals visited cellars in little towns throughout Europe and the empire. Was this wine good, and a good value? Did it taste like wines from this-little-town usually taste, so customer expectations would be met? The skills they learned and used were written down and passed along to their apprentices. Beginning 1969, this knowledge, acquired over centuries, was all formalized with the creation of the WSET.

 Once you have read the course descriptions in this section of the website, we're sure that you will agree with us about the quality of these courses. In a culture such as ours, in which wine knowledge is equated with memorizing Wine Advocate or Wine Spectator scores, it's not surprising that American Master of Wine candidates did so badly when they first began taking the M.W. exams in 1988, or that they have had more success now that these WSET courses -- mandatory for U.K. candidates -- are more widely available in the U.S.
