Here is how CEO Jayasree Ullal became a self-made billionaire
Jayshree Ullal has a slew of monikers to her name, including "Queen of the Wired World." She isn't simply another Indian businesswoman who has built a reputation for herself around the world. Ullal is one of the top five prominent persons in the world of networking, according to Forbes, and has been giving IT behemoths a run for their money. With a net worth of $1.7 billion, Ullal, 60, was one of five Indian Americans and Indian entrepreneurs listed on Forbes' list of America's Richest Self-Made Women this year.
Arista Networks' president and CEO, who is well-known for her financial acumen, was instrumental in transforming the cloud computing company into a global leader in networking technology. Her knowledge and abilities have earned her a number of prizes and accolades. She was named one of VM World's Top Ten Executives, A Woman of Influence for Security CSOs, Information Week's Innovator and Influencer Award, CRN's Top 25 Disruptors of 2014, World's Best CEOs: Growth Leaders in 2018, and Fortune's Businessperson of the Year for 2019. She was also ranked 118 on Fortune's Businessperson of the Year for 2019.
Ullal was born in London and raised in Delhi, where she attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary before moving to the United States with her family when her physicist father got a new job. She finally earned her bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from San Francisco State University and her master's degree in engineering management from Santa Clara University. She was one of only two female students in a class of 70 at college. She interprets this as a message that more women should be encouraged to pursue technical education.
She started her career at Fairchild, then moved to AMD before joining Crescendo, a communications firm that was ultimately acquired by Cisco. Cisco also hired Ullal on a two-year contract, which she was able to extend for another 15 years because of her abilities. According to a Business Line interview with Ullal, she was able to expand the switching business from zero to more than $10 billion in a decade with the help of her CEO and employer. The startup ethos within such a massive corporation piqued Ullal's interest, and she was soon promoted to a senior executive position at Cisco. By letting businesses connect their devices to the same network, the switching business turned out to be a cash cow, bringing in a third of Cisco's income.
Ullal had her moments of self-doubt as she progressed from strength to strength. Was she doing a good job as a mother or a father? Was she able to strike a balance and do credit to all of her responsibilities? “ In the year 2000, I began to wonder if I was too focused on my career. As a result, I took a leave of absence from Cisco for several months in order to be a full-time mother to my two girls. 'Amma, when are you going back to work?' they asked me soon after. This is a pivotal moment. In an interview, she remarked, "I did return to Cisco, this time with a heightened sense that I was destined to manage my job and family." It also helped that she had very supportive parents and hubby.
She left Cisco in 2008 to become the Indian billionaire, president, and CEO of Arista Networks. She'd always wanted to run her own business, and Arista provided the perfect opportunity. She quickly gained business from her former employer and added some large companies to her portfolio, including Microsoft and Facebook. Arista has become one of the fastest-growing cloud networking firms, with a valuation of upwards of $25 billion, as she has chipped away at Cisco's market share. In truth, Ullal was a key figure in transforming a once-obscure company into a big player in the world of computer networking.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been ranked among the top 10 most powerful people in the world by Forbes in a list that has been topped for the first time ever by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who dethroned Russian President Vladimir Putin as the most influential person on the planet. Modi ranks 9th on the Forbes 2018 list of 75 of the World’s Most Powerful People who make the world turn “There are nearly 7.5 billion humans on planet Earth, but these 75 men and women make the world turn. Forbes’ annual ranking of The World’s Most Powerful People identifies one person out of every 100 million whose actions mean the most,” Forbes said. Modi, 67, is ahead of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (ranked 13), United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May (14), Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (15) and Apple CEO Tim Cook (24). Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani, with a net worth of 41.2 billion dollars, is the only other Indian on the power list, ranking 32nd. Microsoft’s India-born CEO Satya Nadella is on the 40th spot. Forbes said Modi “remains hugely popular” in the second most populous country on earth. It cited Modi government’s November 2016 decision to eliminate India’s two largest banknotes in a bid to reduce money laundering and corruption. “Modi has raised his profile as a global leader in recent years during official visits with US President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. He has also emerged as a key figure in the international effort to tackle climate change, as warming affects millions of his country’s rural citizens,” Forbes said. On Ambani, Forbes said the billionaire industrialist’s Reliance sparked a price war in India’s hyper-competitive telecom market with the launch of 4G phone service Jio in 2016. “Jio has signed on 160 million customers by offering free domestic voice calls, dirt-cheap data services and virtually free smartphones,” Forbes said. After being named the most powerful person in the world for four consecutive years, Putin drops to the second spot, dethroned by Xi, who seizes the top spot for the first time ever after China’s Congress amended its constitution in March, broadening his influence and eliminating term limits. Forbes said the Chinese leader “enjoys a cult of personality” not seen since Chairman Mao Zedong, China’s founding father. Putin has ruled Russia since May of 2000, and this year he was re-elected to a fourth term with nearly 77 percent of the vote. That’s the largest margin of victory for any candidate for the office since the fall of the Soviet Union, Forbes said. “This year’s list highlights the consolidation of power in the hands of an elite few,” Forbes said. Rounding up the top five on the list are Trump on the third spot, followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel (4) and Amazon chief Jeff Bezos (5). On Trump, Forbes said he has seen limited success pushing his agenda through a Congress controlled by his own party, is under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, and can’t shake off scandals arising from his personal and business life –but he’s still Commander in Chief of the world’s greatest economic and military power. There are 17 new names on the list this year, including Mohammed Bin Salman Al Saud (8), the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia. His father remains king, but he has consolidated power beyond any doubt and taken control of the country, Forbes said. Other new members include U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell (11), Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods (34), President of South Korea Moon Jae-in (54) and Special Counsel for the U.S. Department of Justice Robert Mueller (72). On Nadella, Forbes said the Microsoft CEO has steered the company away from a failing mobile strategy and focused on other segments, including cloud computing and augmented reality.”Since taking over as a CEO, Microsoft’s stock has increased by more than 150 per cent,” it said. The list also includes Pope Francis (6), Cofounder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates (7), French President Emmanuel Macron (12), Alibaba Chief Jack Ma (21), CEO and Chairman of Tesla Elon Musk (25), UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres (31), North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (36), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (57), Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad (62), Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte (69) and Islamic State’s self-proclaimed caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (73).In compiling the list, Forbes said it considered hundreds of candidates from various walks of life all around the globe, and measured their power along four dimensions of whether the person has power over lots of people, financial resources controlled by each person, whether the candidate is powerful in multiple spheres and that the candidates actively used their power. Rounding up the top five on the list are Trump on the third spot, followed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel (4) and Amazon chief Jeff Bezos (5). On Trump, Forbes said he has seen limited success pushing his agenda through a Congress controlled by his own party, is under investigation by multiple law enforcement agencies, and can't shake off scandals arising from his personal and business life --but he's still Commander in Chief of the world's greatest economic and military power. On Nadella, Forbes said the Microsoft CEO has steered the company away from a failing mobile strategy and focused on other segments, including cloud computing and augmented reality. "Since taking over as a CEO, Microsoft's stock has increased by more than 150 per cent," it said. The list also includes Pope Francis (6), Cofounder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Bill Gates (7), French President Emmanuel Macron (12), Alibaba Chief Jack Ma (21), CEO and Chairman of Tesla Elon Musk (25), UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres (31), North Korean leader Kim Jong-un (36), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (57), Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad (62), Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte (69) and Islamic State's self-proclaimed caliph Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (73). In compiling the list, Forbes said it considered hundreds of candidates from various walks of life all around the globe, and measured their power along four dimensions of whether the person has power over lots of people, financial resources controlled by each person, whether the candidate is powerful in multiple spheres and that the candidates actively used their power.

Narendra Modi Among Top 10 Most Powerful People in the World: Forbes
New York: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been ranked among the top 10 most powerful people in the world by Forbes in a list that has been topped for the first time ever by Chinese President Xi Jinping, who dethroned Russian President Vladimir Putin as the most influential person on the planet.
Modi ranks 9th on the Forbes 2018 list of 75 of the World’s Most Powerful People who make the world turn.
“There are nearly 7.5 billion humans on planet Earth, but these 75 men and women make the world turn.

Around 58 Indian companies in 2017 Forbes ?Global 2000? list
Three years into the Narendra Modi-led government’s rule and the number of Indian companies to feature in the Forbes 15th annual ‘Global 2000’ list for 2017 has risen to 58, compared to 56 the previous year.
This comprehensive ranking of the world’s biggest, most powerful and valuable publicly listed companies, released on Wednesday, is based on a mix of four metrics: sales, profits, assets and market value. Forbes gave an equal weighting of all four metrics, to rank companies according to size. The Mukesh Ambani-led oil-to-yarn and retail conglomerate, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL), ranked 106 (No. 121 last year) is the highest ranked Indian company in the list, with a market capitalisation of $71.2 billion. Reliance Industries, has witnessed a surge in investor confidence at the stock markets, after the launch of its telecom arm, Reliance Jio Infocomm late last year.
Reliance Industries is followed by State Bank of India, the country’s largest lender, ranked 244 this year (No. 149 last year) and state-run oil explorer ONGC, ranked No. 246 (220 last year).
Four other Indian banks – all of them private lenders – HDFC Bank (No. 258), ICICI Bank (No. 310), Axis Bank (No. 463) and Kotak Mahindra Bank (No. 744), find themselves in the top 20 Indian companies in the overall list, this coming despite battling high levels of stressed assets in a still weak lending environment.
Tata Motors, the automobile arm of the salt-to-software Tata Group, has retained its position of sixth amongst Indian companies, but fell in terms of ranking to No. 290 (No.278 last year). At the global level, China’s banking giants monopolized slots at the top of the 2017 Global 2000 list. Industrial & Commercial Bank of China is ranked No. 1 for the fifth consecutive year while China Construction Bank remains in the No. 2 spot. The other two of China’s “Big Four” banks – Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of China – dropped down on the list, but remained in the top ten.
Berkshire Hathaway, the largest company in the United States, edges up one spot to No. 3 on this year’s list. Notable gainers included General Electric which surged to No. 14 against No.68 in 2016. Ecommerce giant Amazon has also jumped to No. 83 this year compared to No. 237 in 2016. “Forbes’ 2017 Global 2000 list faces much pressure amid unsteady geopolitical climates and slowing economies. Yet, in aggregate, these 2,000 companies have managed to come out stronger than last year, with increased sales, profits, assets and market values,” Halah Touryalai, deputy editor, Investing, Forbes Media, said in a statement. “Despite slowing GDP figures, China and the United States, whose companies make up more than 40 percent of the list, continue to dominate the top 10 list with financial giants,” she said.
“This list illustrates that in spite of headwinds, the world’s dominant companies remain a steady force in an unpredictable and challenging environment.”
