Pedri, the "short and skinny" kid who was rejected by Tenerife, returns home

And from home-cooked food, he moves on to the main course, to what he loved most as a child: playing for the modest Juventud Laguna. There he got to know the ball and enjoyed it less than he made the spectators enjoy it, who were increasingly interested in his elastic, daring, mischievous figure. At the modest club, he shared illusions with his friends and his brother, Fernando González. "He was always a quite normal boy, introverted, quiet", several sources of the club confirm to Relevo.

Pedri's first game at the Heliodoro

On 7 September 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic altered the world, Pedri stepped on the pitch of the Heliodoro Rodríguez López for the first and only time so far. It was his first Canarian derby as a professional and, like any mortal, he dreamed of breaking the curse of 18 straight years without a win for UD Las Palmas at the Blue and Whites' ground. True, the statistics were inflated by the irregularity of the encounters between the two teams, as they did not always coincide in the same category. Even so, the statistic still weighed heavily. Under the direction of Pepe Mel, their footballing mentor, the Yellows had not yet tasted victory on matchday 4. The desire to make it three was more intense than ever, fuelled by the urgency and the desire to change course.

No luck for the away side. It ended 0-0 and with ‘los canariones’ in 17th place. The unheralded prodigy played 86 minutes - he was replaced by Polish striker Tomas Pekhart - and picked up a yellow card for an ill-timed tackle. "It was really his first big game. I remember it was a tough game. Unfortunately, Pedri was injured in that game after a kick. It was also very special because it was his first year as a professional and especially because he was playing for the first time in Tenerife. It was all very different, we were 16 years old and we saw it as a match at the beginning of his career", adds Fran, his dear friend.

The Tenerife binders and the Madrid snowfall

There are stories to suit all tastes: passionate love affairs and romances that never came to fruition. Of the latter, Club Deportivo Tenerife has a lot to tell. When Pedri was still a youngster, the club had its eyes on him and tried to recruit him, but his school grades made his parents decline the offer. Books before football. Padilla, the scout who had bet on him and who returned empty-handed and with a grimace of resignation, knows this well.

Some time later, a new opportunity presented itself. This time, in the offices of the Tenerife club, they did not know how to read between the lines. The boy played in the infantile category and those in charge at the time described him as ‘small, without body, without presence’. Or to put it bluntly: ‘a short, skinny boy’. The opportunity passed.

It was in 2017, already a cadet, when destiny knocked on his door for the last time. Julio Durán, a scout with renewed hope, sought his urgent incorporation to Tenerife, just when the summer was fading and the league was on the horizon. But Pedri did not give in. He never heard from Tenerife again. And so it was that UD Las Palmas, attentive to the case, pulled off the masterstroke: they signed the young prodigy and launched him into the spotlight of professional football on 18 August 2019, already even signed by the astute FC Barcelona of Josep Maria Bartomeu, who convinced the Canary club with clauses that could reach - and did reach - €30 million. To this was added a 15% bonus on the capital gain of a future sale.

Before the Blaugrana giants, there were many other teams who sensed the spark in the boy from Tegueste. Atlético Madrid approached Juventud Laguna, and Real Madrid's scout from the Canary Islands, Sixto Alfonso, even sat down at the family's tavern with proposals and promises. In fact, that's where the adventure of the culé Pedri begins, travelling to Valdebebas. It was a week in February 2018, defying the Madrid winter. But the Adolfo Suárez airport was paralysed under the white blanket of snow and the training grounds were reduced to frozen postcards. What should have been a golden opportunity turned into just two days of testing under the snow. The Madrid executive, in the midst of the disaster, bid farewell to the boy. There was no further comment.

A pure interview for some, and painful for others.

In an interview, in 2019, for UD Radio, Pedri, his voice still tinged with the illusion of his 17 years, shared how he spent a day in his life as a promising footballer. "The life I lead is the life of all children who dream of becoming footballers. I am very happy for everything that is happening to me", he said.

He had just been called up to the national team for the U-17 World Cup and could not hide his enthusiasm. "I'm going to enjoy the World Cup experience with the national team. I was lucky enough to play in Qatar and score for the U-17 team on my debut", he recalled, his eyes sparkling. However, one moment that he held in his memory was his first goal as a professional, which he scored against Sporting Gijón: "It helped us win and that makes it all the more special", he confessed.

The young midfielder spoke of what it meant to him to defend the UD Las Palmas crest, the team that gave him the real opportunity, and the confidence, to make his debut and excel in the elite. "It's a club that means a lot to me. It gave me the opportunity to reach professional football. I dream, like any kid my age, of playing in the First Division with UD Las Palmas".

A dream that he never achieved and will hardly fulfil given his cachet, his impeccable progression and his vivid dream in the city of Barcelona.

"Honestly, it's not easy to settle down and forget about the outside world. He is a guy who is very apt to think about himself and his family. The key to success for him is also the humility with which he lives. The only advice I have given him has been to be the way he is, that way he will get to where he wants to be. Oh, and not to listen to external criticism, which he doesn't do, it's not within him", Francisco Rodríguez Llarena concludes.

This Monday, 18 November, he will receive the affection of his loved ones in a venue that will put its heart into it and which, starting at 19:45 Canary Islands time, will be the last big red carpet of the year.
