Tom Joyner replaced with a comedian and a beauty. . .

Rickey Smiley to replace Tom Joyner

Reach Media’s syndicated host Tom Joyner announced his replacement will be comedian Rickey Smiley. He will take over in January and part of his cast will include the beautiful and witty Eva Marcille (yup, we love her a bit too much. Hope the new baby doesn't do too much damage on that shape) and Gary Wit Da Tea. Tom made his retirement known when he signed his last contract (NET NEWS 10/17/17). Smiley says, “It’s an honor to continue the legacy of my boss and frat brother Tom Joyner. Not only has he been a friend to my family and me over the years, but we consider him family. Tom’s mentorship has instilled in me valuable wisdom that I will carry with me through this new morning show.” Reach Media/Urban One CEO David Kantor chimes on Tom Joyner replacement, “Tom changed urban radio. He entertained and educated multiple generations of listeners over the last 25 years. While there is and will always be only one Tom Joyner, we are excited that Rickey will be moving to Urban AC in January. Like Tom, Rickey's talent, community consciousness and commitment to his audience will serve his listeners well. Reach Media’s other current morning Urban AC program, The Russ Parr Morning Show, will also continue in syndication into 2020.”

One trailblazer exits, another emerges

Tom seems content, “I’m happy to see the landscape of Urban AC morning radio continue to expand with Rickey, and I’m proud of the doors the Tom Joyner Morning Show opened. Twenty-five years ago, there was no template for a syndicated Urban radio show and we worked hard to prove that we could successfully produce and market a national platform that would entertain, inform and empower African-American listeners. We broke some ground, raised the bar for what audiences expected from Black radio all while partying with a purpose. Yeah, we’ve done a lot but there’s still a lot left to be done. I’m confident that Rickey’s activism along with his love for radio, the community, and HBCUs, will pick up where we left off.”

But what about . . .

Tom Joyner will air his final show at the end of this year. He’s currently touring with his "One More Time" show, commemorating the 25th anniversary of the TJMS. We're not sure what this means for the Fantastic Voyage, but we hope it continues with Eva Marcille aboard (damn she' fine!). Oh, and we hope Rickey continues his weekly Karaoke show at the Stardome Comedy Club in Birmingham. What would we do without that weekly treat of comedy and great entertainment? We have more questions

Who and where

Still awaiting word on landing spots for Tom's cast, and where Rickey will broadcast. The Red Velvet Cake studios won't be the same without Joyner, and Atlanta won't be the same without Smiley, decisions, decisions, decisions. Read the full article

The picture that this Washington Post author paints comparing Tom Joyner to Rush Limbaugh is spot on. Is it prejudice to give different first amendment freedoms to some while holding another group of people to a different social standard?

Since these comments were not critiqued by many, I’m assuming they were acceptable to the majority. How can anyone who agrees with Joyner these comments continue to support the NFL and/or the Washington Football team? It continues to blow my mind why Democrats and the radical left don’t boycott the NFL. Could it be because of money?

Black syndicated radio host Tom Joyner of the popular Tom Joyner Morning Show thinks Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan is a modern day slave owner. Yes, you heard me correctly. During Joyner’s broadcast on Monday morning, Joyner expressed displeasure at Shanahan for keeping Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III in Sunday’s playoff game against the Seahawks even though the star player seemed hobbled by an injured knee.

Let’s be crystal clear. What Joyner is saying is Shanahan looks at Robert Griffin III (also referred to as RG3) as nothing more than a piece of “black property” he owns and is willing to quite literally “play to his death.”

All I could think about when I heard the audio of Joyner’s comments is how incensed the media would be if an equally popular radio host such as Rush Limbaugh said something like “Wow, Robert Griffin III acted like Django the way he tore up that field.” I can assure you the mainstream press would have howled for an apology from Limbaugh, demanded advertisers pull their support from his show and so on.

Seems to me we, including the media, should apply the same standards of decency to all Americans regardless of race. What’s good for the goose should be good for the gander.

My first encounter with Mr. Joyner was in high school. I called into the radio station in Chicago. This was before he became the "Fly Jock" by flying back and forth to do two radio shows in Chicago and Dallas. I asked him to call my tennis partner, Dana, and wish her a Happy Birthday. To my surprise, he did it! He didn't have to do that! Another time, he mentioned "my little character," Little Pampu, on his show! He didn't have to do that! He's been helpful in other ways and I am forever grateful! He didn't have to do any of that! Did you register to vote and voted by listening to his show? I did! I learned many Little Known Black History Facts from his show! I darn well didn't learn many of them in grammar, high school or college! Who else received a little knowledge from the show? Any important news to the African-American community, I heard first on his show. Who else listened while getting ready for school or work or at work? People that I have never heard of and eventually would support, were introduced to me on his show. How many careers did he create and revive? Do you remember the Sky Shows? His show not only made you think, laugh, but be productive in our community. His Fantastic Voyage/Party with a Purpose cruise helps many kids go to college. Matter of fact, I took the above photo on his cruise! The cruise was worth every dime! I also was a vendor at one of his Allstate Tom Joyner Family Reunion events. Just like this photo, Mr. Joyner has been a part of my life for so long that when I finally met him, I was a little star struck. Thus, the photo above being off-centered. However, I'll get another photo because Mr. Joyner is one of the most humble, helpful, kind, informative and fun-loving people out there! Thank you for everything! Happy Retirement, Mr. Joyner! Today is bittersweet, The last live show of the Tom Joyner Morning Show. I first worked with @flyjocktomjoyner before he was the FLYJock. We worked at the legendary K104 in Dallas, TX. I was doing overnights and Tom Joyner Morning Show when my show ended. One morning Tom said Spike you’re from up north right (Spike was my radio name back then) I said yes, he said do you like chicken, I said yes. He said have you ever had ”chicken” fried steak before. I said no. He said it’s a southern thing the next time you go into a restaurant in Dallas asked for ”chicken” fried steak, but make sure to ask for the white meat. I said OK and everybody in the room started laughing. Based on their laughter, I did not do that. Come to find out that’s nothing but ground beef with batter on it. We’ve been cool ever since then. I wish you nothing but a long life after radio; you will never be replaced.
