as many criticisms i have of mai as a character, i really disagree with the idea that her “just letting” azula stop the trade for tom tom shows that she doesn’t care about him or that she’s not afraid of azula. i actually find this to be the moment i feel the most sympathy for mai in the entire series.

don’t get me wrong—i don’t think she originally joined azula out of fear; i think she was more or less being honest when she said she would do anything to get out of omashu because she was bored.

but when azula halts the exchange and compromises tom tom’s safety, something shifts. the music becomes really tense. mai’s expression doesn’t change, but she takes a beat too long to answer, she looks to where sokka is holding tom tom, and then she agrees with azula anyway.

it wasn’t enough for azula for mai to join her because she wanted to—azula wanted mai to join her on her terms and to know that she held all the cards, that she could decide a trade for mai’s brother wasn’t worth giving up bumi as a prisoner and mai couldn’t say anything about it without risking treason.

and this is the moment i think is supposed to show that mai now understands the danger she actually is in, similar to the close-up of ty lee’s face at the circus as azula insists the net be set on fire and wild animals set loose.

ty lee says no originally, but then tries to protect herself by backtracking and claiming it’s the universe who wants her to join the mission. mai protects herself by never saying no at all, displaying a mask of apathy, and (though this is conjecture) maybe even hoping if she shows enough loyalty by not disagreeing, azula will reward her by changing her mind and help her get her brother back later.

I enjoy the wide range of different sibling relationships the series portrays.

Sokka and Katara both having to raise each other after the Fire Nation robbed them of both their parents in different ways so always trying to be so protective of the other and simultaneously take the role of responsible parent and playful sibling like they're each both Nani and Lilo at the same time,

Azula and Zuko both being abused and pitted against each other for traditions' sake, and neither being a good sibling to each other and ultimately being powerless to help the other from the same person who was abusing them anyway but still having that complicated mix of love and resentment and blame for each other (And yet somehow being the Fire Nation Royalty siblings with the best shot at eventually making something work, compared to Sozin/Zeisan, Ozai/Iroh, etc)

Rafa and Misu on their lifelong journey to get Rafa's face back desperate to speak to each other again,

Maliq and Malina being awful and annoying and I hate them,

Tarrlok and Noatok being ultimately doomed in the end even though they genuinely tried to go against their father for each other's sake and at least deciding they wanted to die together to bring an end to all this,

Desna and Eska being uncomfortably close to each other to the point of codependency because they're all the other has when it's very clear that their father very clearly couldn't care less about either of them,

Mai and Tom-Tom having a big difference in age so Mai being in a position to help protect Tom-Tom from what their father is trying to turn him into,

Ikki, Meelo, and Jinora just getting to be silly siblings at each other with the normal sibling squabbles and antics together,

Ty Lee cutting ties with her siblings and never wanting to look back, only for her sisters to come searching for her and all of them ending up in the same circus, leaving them at square one of struggling to find their individuality outside of a matched set and fighting over feeling like they can't be themselves without the others stealing that from them, but still caring about each other and saving Ty Lee,

Tonraq and Unalaq just being completely unsalvageable and having no fondness between them to be found and not really wishing there was anyway

I can see Kiyi and Tom-Tom becoming friends after the events of Smoke and Shadow

The two trying to convince their older siblings for playdates with them there. When really they trying to get their big brother & big sister back together and get married so they can be one big family.

(Which is my headcanon of a happy place where eventually the two have Izumi)

Just noticed how there are so many parallels between the way Zuko and Mai protect and cherish their little siblings in the comics. Its such a stark contrast to their own upbringings, and you can truly see how they take every measure to not repeat the same thing to Tom Tom and Kiyi. Especially in their respective interactions with Ukano and Azula.

The utter despair when they found out their siblings were first kidnapped.

The relief when they found out Kiyi and Tom Tom were okay.

But nothing beats when they’re one big happy family.

I have a hc that tom-tom was often bullied in school due to his dad is in jail thing. He's becomes more and more quiet each day and mai keeps asking him if everything is okay (cuz she has a soft spot for her lil brother)

This is also when maiko gets backtogether and zuko and tom-tom always had a bond with zuko playing with tom-tom whenever mai brought him along on dates.

So anyways zuko finds about this matter through mai and one day zuko asks him whats the matter to which tom-tom says its nothing.

eventually he tells zuko whats happening and zuko goes all crazy on them and creep those kids out as blue spirit.
