YES YES YES YES
I love the Concord gang! Marcy especially <3
I’m an avid settlement builder so I spend a lot of time just dicking around in Sanctuary and overhearing the conversations between the crew that I think a lot of people miss. They flesh out the Longs so much since the player really doesn’t talk to them!
Her conversation with Jun about going on a walk is so heartbreaking I love it. They’re both grieving in different ways and Marcys involves stuffing all her sadness deep deep down and never letting anyone ever see her crack and fall apart meanwhile Jun is slowly glueing his prices back together. That conversation starts with her pushing him away but she eventually realizes he’s only trying to help (I love them so much)
People hate her so much- and like I get why, it’s easy to compare her to Nazeem from Skyrim as just this asshole who’s always mean to you but A) shes grieving and scared this random stranger is going to turn on them after she’s been essentially betrayed or let down too many times and B) she’s also NOT ALWAYS MEAN TO YOU??? People really need to talk to Marcy more- like yeah she’s prickly but some of her lines when you say hello are her trying to be nice and just kinda struggling with it,
“I’ll hand it to you, this place isn’t awful. It’s still a hole but it could be worse”
“Life still ain’t perfect, but we’re surviving”
Also I love her line: “Nothing I hate more than Raider scumbags. If you run into any, put a few down for me.” Like, yes mam 🫡 (she’s trying to bond with you since you seem to share a common enemy!)
on the subject of Marcy and Jun Long:
I'd never interacted with them in the Museum, until this playthrough. I was kind of floored how reflective their lines were of how they each experience and process grief.
Marcy's grief projects outward, towards the injustices done to her and her family. They were supposed to protect us. He promised. She expresses anger, and we know this for sure if we speak to her later. And her anger drives her to act, and seek ways to proactively protect her loved ones. She says so later in Sanctuary, "We should keep moving. Don't want to get bogged down when the raiders find us again."
Jun's grief is inward. I promised. I couldn't keep (my) promise. I'm so sorry. He withdraws within himself. And again, in Sanctuary, he has a hard time stepping outside of himself as he begins to heal. "Please, I just want to be alone right now."
What is so poignant to me, and honestly why I love them so much, is they feel very grounded to me. These are very reasonable reactions to literally the worst possible thing to happen. And they don't stay that way. They start to get better. Jun starts to move out of his shell a little more and reach out to his wife for connection again. Marcy stops moving and stops lashing out as much. They both start feeling safe in Sanctuary again and start healing together and with their community.
I freaking love the Longs, man.
#To be fair I think some of her nicer dialog is locked behind high settlement happiness#so you have to invest time into Sanctuary#I have so many thoughts about these 5 dudes#they rotate in my brain microwave style#I love when you first enter sanctuary-#Sturges first call is to make sure Marcy’s okay with it#I wish Marcy got a conversation with us like Jun does#we get to bond with Jun over losing a son but never with Marcy#((personally I think it would of been really cool if we get a Marcy talk post Institute))#((and learning that our sons alive))#((then you could do something with Marcy being both happy to see at least one family not torn apart by this wasteland))#((but also a bit envious it wasn’t hers))#((also I think it would be cool if like Mama Murphys chair you then get a special item to place that’s like a grave or such to their son))#fallout#fallout 4#reblog#Random’s Random Talks
