Hiii do you guys remember this piece I did forever ago? Even though it was just background practice I'm still considering it OC concept art, and I actually worked out some more concepts for their world and a basic setup. rn I'm calling the project "Godless."
To start, I always knew the general setting for the story would be a semi-fantasy world that takes inspiration from 1800s Greece (You can see it in their clothing) because I feel like too much media boils Greek culture down to the ancient stuff and I wanna highlight the actual culture of the country these stories take inspo from. But I still did wanna include the Gods in an indirect way (Meaning not making them characters themselves)
In this world certain people are born with "gifts" from the Gods and other often deified mythological figures. Each gift has it's own specific figure associated with it, for example someone with the Gift of Achilles would have invulnerability (With a weakness you can probably guess).
However, despite the existence of gifts from the Gods, the Gods themselves are... No where. They don't get involved in human affairs anymore, and the world has moved on on its own. Maybe the gifts were their way of saying "You take it from here" or maybe they're the last remnants of their existence all together. Has humanity become closer to the divine- an apotheosis? Or have they been abandoned, left in a Godless world, worshiping nothing? Time goes on either way, passed the ancient and into uncertainty.
The two characters I drew are meant to be kids living in a small rural village in Not-Greece (name pending). The girl is named Chrysoula, which means "Goldie," for her eyes. And the boy is named Theodori, literally meaning "God's gift," for his blessing of the rare Gift of Heracles (Which of course grands him amazing strength). We can call them Chrys and Theo for short!
Still, Chrys longs for an adventure- She wants to go on a journey, like Odysseus or Jason and the Argonauts once did (Keeping in mind that, for this world, these are real actual historical events). But there's no call to action for her to refuse (not that she would) so can she choose to take the Heroes Journey on her own accord? The time of Gods and Heroes has long passed, so is it even possible? If the day comes, Theo will also be faced with the choice to go with her or stay. Maybe she herself is the call to action.
Chrys is the type of kid who hates rural life, hates the day-to-day minutiae, and longs for something more. Theo, on the other hand, enjoys village life. He likes being a big fish in a small pond, he likes feeling needed by those around him, and he's not bored by it at all. Though he'll admit that things would be a bit more dull if Chrys wasn't around to antagonize him, since only she will.
Bonus character details:
Chrys's golden bow was inspired by the song "Nefeli's Tango" or "To Tango Tis Nefelis." Like the titular Nefeli, Chrys wears her bow to stand out from the others in the village. There's additional symbolism to it too but I don't wanna say it all here!
The snake on Theo's pants is of course a reference to the myth of baby Heracles strangling a snake (or snakes, depending on the version) sent to kill him in his cradle. Theo takes a lot of pride in his gift, so he flaunts its iconography.
Chrys lives with her aunt, while Theo lives with his parents and younger brother
Chrys swears like a sailor, but I've taken the artistic choice to depict all her swear words in actual Greek. She WILL call you malaka, you're welcome
Theo, despite his pride, is generally a mellow person who enjoys helping others. If you ask him for help with something it's very unlikely he'll say no. Does he know how?

Veronica Antonelli is an Italian-French soprano with strong bonda to Greece and its culture. She recently recorded the famous Greek song “to Tango tis Nefelis” -Nefeli’s Tango- and asked us to post her what we think her excellent performance.
She wrote in an accompanied message:
Love led me to Athens, twenty-five years ago, where I studied lyrical singing into the prestigious National Conservatory of Maria Callas. I felt in love not only with my handsome Greekman but with Greek culture, Greek history, Greek music, Greek dances, Greek spirit, Greek food…
I learned how to speak and write Greek into a famous American school, ready to be a perfect Greek wife, but as a matter of fact, my career took me away from Greece however I didn’t forget this language and culture.
Music has no frontier and Greek songs can enter into your soul indelibly. I am a international opera singer and my concept certified UNESCO “Enchanted Monuments” consists in valorizing our heritage thanx to my a capella voice, transmitting operatic art to everybody.

Burası benim mezarlığım.
Ölülerle değil umutlarla dolu.
Yalnızlık kokusu, sessizlik müziği,
Burası benim mezarlığım
Kalp kırıkları mezarda.
Burası benim mezarlığım
Göz yaşları yağmuru, iç çekişleri gök gürültüsü olan...

I started Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, I am going to take it slow and easy, for this academic year is of the utmost importance,
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous, was a stunning book and I am so glad I was picked it up. Such a refreshing and thoughtful read, the poetic lines and imagery, was gorgeous.
Listening to
I love that song so much.

This is the lyrics
To Tango Tis Nefelis
Haris Alexiou

So this is a Greek song that I think that some of you need to take the time to listen to it✨
Here is the lyrics in Greek and in English:
Two little angels
came and stole
the golden rag
Nefeli used to wear on her head,
so as to differ from us all in the vineyard.
Two little angels
who were dreaming of Nefeli and wanted
to feed her pomegranate and honey,
so that she could not remember,
so that she would forget what she wanted,
they managed to seduce her.
Hyacinths and lilies
robbed her of her perfume and wear it
while flying love gods laugh at her,
throwing their arrows towards her.
But the benevolent Zeus
takes the adolescence water away from her,
turns her into a cloud and disperses her
so that they could not find her.
