Operation Stumpy Re-Read
ADWD: Daenerys V (Chapter 30)
Each morning, from her western ramparts, the queen would count the sails on Slaver's Bay.
Today she counted five-and-twenty, though some were far away and moving, so it was hard to be certain. Sometimes she missed one, or counted one twice. What does it matter? A strangler only needs ten fingers.
Not always.
"And when your tears have drowned you, the valonqar shall wrap his hands about your pale white throat and choke the life from you." - Cersei VIII, ADWD
Tumblr media
+.+.+
Her admiral's counsel had proved worse than useless. "Let them see your dragons," Groleo said. "Let the Yunkishmen have a taste of fire, and the trade will flow again."
"Those ships are strangling us, and all my admiral can do is talk of dragons," Dany said. "You are my admiral, are you not?"
"An admiral without ships."
"Build ships."
"Warships cannot be made from brick. The slavers burned every stand of timber within twenty leagues of here."
"Then ride out two-and-twenty leagues. I will give you wagons, workers, mules, whatever you require."
"I am a sailor, not a shipwright. I was sent to fetch Your Grace back to Pentos. Instead you brought us here and tore my Saduleon to pieces for some nails and scraps of wood. I will never see her like again. I may never see my home again, nor my old wife. It was not me who refused the ships this Daxos offered. I cannot fight the Qartheen with fishing boats."
Does this not feel like it was lifted from a Cersei chapter?
Of course Cersei would have used the dragons months ago. Cersei's just a more efficient Daenerys. Why take years to achieve self-annihilation when it can be done in months?
+.+.+
His bitterness dismayed her, so much so that Dany found herself wondering if the grizzled Pentoshi could be one of her three betrayers.
Yes, yes. Let it consume you.
+.+.+
"I will hear no more about my dragons. Leave me. Go pray to your Pentoshi gods for a storm to sink our foes."
"No sailor prays for storms, Your Grace."
Gods don't answer prayers, but Daenerys does.
A storm will sink them!
+.+.+
Ser Barristan remained. "Our stores are ample for the moment," he reminded her, "and Your Grace has planted beans and grapes and wheat. Your Dothraki have harried the slavers from the hills and struck the shackles from their slaves. They are planting too, and will be bringing their crops to Meereen to market. And you will have the friendship of Lhazar."
She's on the correct path, all she has to do is see it through. Hold the line!
+.+.+
"Your Radiance, Hizdahr was seen to enter the pyramid of Zhak last evening. He did not depart until well after dark."
"How many pyramids has he visited?" asked Dany.
"Eleven."
"And how long since the last murder?"
"Six-and-twenty days." The Shavepate's eyes brimmed with fury. It had been his notion to have the Brazen Beasts follow her betrothed and take note of all his actions.
"So far Hizdahr has made good on his promises."
Gee golly, this Shavepate is giving off bad vibes.
The peace deal is working. Hold the line!
+.+.+
"If there is a Harpy." Skahaz was convinced that somewhere in Meereen the Sons of the Harpy had a highborn overlord, a secret general commanding an army of shadows. Dany did not share his belief. The Brazen Beasts had taken dozens of the Harpy's Sons, and those who had survived their capture had yielded names when questioned sharply … too many names, it seemed to her. It would have been pleasant to think that all the deaths were the work of a single enemy who might be caught and killed, but Dany suspected that the truth was otherwise. My enemies are legion.
What do we know about Daenerys? She's always wrong.
I think there is a Harpy, but you might be able to apply her words to the Others.
+.+.+
"If he is not the Harpy, he knows him. I can find the truth of that easy enough. Give me your leave to put Hizdahr to the question, and I will bring you a confession."
"No," she said. "I do not trust these confessions. You've brought me too many of them, all of them worthless."
Barristan Selmy is standing right next to her when she says this. Do you think that will help him in the future?
+.+.+
The Shavepate's scowl turned his ugly face even uglier. "A mistake. The Great Master Hizdahr plays Your Worship for a fool. Do you want a serpent in your bed?"
I want Daario in my bed, but I sent him away for the sake of you and yours.
So yes?
+.+.+
"Every man on that list has kin within the city. Sons and brothers, wives and daughters, mothers and fathers. Let my Brazen Beasts seize them. Their lives will win you back those ships."
"If I send the Brazen Beasts into the pyramids, it will mean open war inside the city. I have to trust in Hizdahr. I have to hope for peace." Dany held the parchment above a candle and watched the names go up in flame, while Skahaz glowered at her.
Tumblr media
+.+.+
Afterward, Ser Barristan told her that her brother Rhaegar would have been proud of her. Dany remembered the words Ser Jorah had spoken at Astapor: Rhaegar fought valiantly, Rhaegar fought nobly, Rhaegar fought honorably. And Rhaegar died.
We're losing her, doctor.
+.+.+
Grey Worm began the tale. "He came out of the morning mists, a rider on a pale horse, dying. His mare was staggering as she approached the city gates, her sides pink with blood and lather, her eyes rolling with terror. Her rider called out, 'She is burning, she is burning,' and fell from the saddle. This one was sent for, and gave orders that the rider be brought to the Blue Graces. When your servants carried him inside the gates, he cried out again, 'She is burning.' Under his tokar he was a skeleton, all bones and fevered flesh."
[...]
"We must pray," said the Green Grace. "The gods sent this man to us. He comes as a harbinger. He comes as a sign."
"A sign of what?" asked Dany.
"A sign of wroth and ruin."
She did not want to believe that. "He was one man. One sick man with an arrow in his leg. A horse brought him here, not a god." A pale mare.
"She is burning" means Astapor is burning. Might also be hinting at something in the future.
Anyway, nice mount you have there Daenerys.
. . . three mounts must you ride . . .  - Daenerys IV, ACOK
+.+.+
Just three nights ago she had dreamed of Daario lying dead beside the road, staring sightlessly into the sky as crows quarreled above his corpse. Other nights she tossed in her bed, imagining that he'd betrayed her, as he had once betrayed his fellow captains in the Stormcrows. He brought me their heads. What if he had taken his company back to Yunkai, to sell her for a pot of gold? He would not do that. Would he?
Brown Ben Plumm betrayal is foreshadowed all over this chapter, but I'm still holding out hope for Daario.
+.+.+
Daenerys received them in the grandeur of her hall as tall candles burned amongst the marble pillars. When she saw that the Astapori were half-starved, she sent for food at once. These three were all that remained of a dozen who had set out together from the Red City: a bricklayer, a weaver, and a cobbler.
[...]
The weaver raised her head. "Every day we told each other that the dragon queen was coming back." The woman had thin lips and dull dead eyes, set in a pinched and narrow face. "Cleon had sent for you, it was said, and you were coming."
[...]
"Outside our walls, the Yunkai'i devoured our crops and slaughtered our herds," the cobbler went on. "Inside we starved. We ate cats and rats and leather. A horsehide was a feast. King Cutthroat and Queen Whore accused each other of feasting on the flesh of the slain. Men and women gathered in secret to draw lots and gorge upon the flesh of him who drew the black stone. The pyramid of Nakloz was despoiled and set aflame by those who claimed that Kraznys mo Nakloz was to blame for all our woes."
"Others blamed Daenerys," said the weaver, "but more of us still loved you. 'She is on her way,' we said to one another. 'She is coming at the head of a great host, with food for all.' "
Some saviour you turned out to be.
+.+.+
"Afterward the Green Grace was impaled upon a stake in the Plaza of Punishment and left until she died. In the pyramid of Ullhor, the survivors had a great feast that lasted half the night, and washed the last of their food down with poison wine so none need wake again come morning. Soon after came the sickness, a bloody flux that killed three men of every four, until a mob of dying men went mad and slew the guards on the main gate."
That might be a bad omen for Meereen's Green Grace, but I'm seeing a lot of Lannister in this passage.
Impaled upon a stake, and poisoned wine to avoid a worse death. Hm.
+.+.+
"Even then some said that you were coming," said the weaver. "They swore they had seen you mounted on a dragon, flying high above the camps of the Yunkai'i. Every day we looked for you."
You'd think this would stop people from buying into that promised last hero azor ahai bullshit, yet here we are.
+.+.+
"And when the city fell?" demanded Skahaz. "What then?"
"The butchery began. The Temple of the Graces was full of the sick who had come to ask the gods to heal them. The legions sealed the doors and set the temple ablaze with torches. Within the hour fires were burning in every corner of the city. As they spread they joined with one another. The streets were full of mobs, running this way and that to escape the flames, but there was no way out. The Yunkai'i held the gates."
"Yet you escaped," the Shavepate said. "How is that?"
The old man answered. "I am by trade a brickmaker, as my father and his father were before me. My grandfather built our house up against the city walls. It was an easy thing to work loose a few bricks every night. When I told my friends, they helped me shore up the tunnel so it would not collapse. We all agreed that it might be good to have our own way out."
Did you catch that? Did you? Did you catch it?
A fallen city consumed by fire, no way out, but someone knew of a secret tunnel.
She is burning!
+.+.+
I left you with a council to rule over you, Dany thought, a healer, a scholar, and a priest. She could still recall the Red City as she had first seen it, dry and dusty behind its red brick walls, dreaming cruel dreams, yet full of life.
If I look back I am lost.
+.+.+
"You will be safe in Meereen."
The cobbler thanked her for that, and the old brickmaker kissed her foot, but the weaver looked at her with eyes as hard as slate. She knows I lie, the queen thought. She knows I cannot keep them safe. Astapor is burning, and Meereen is next.
I don't think that's why she's looking at you like that, saviour.
+.+.+
Brown Ben shrugged. "Hundreds. Thousands. Some sick, some burned, some wounded. The Cats and the Windblown are swarming through the hills with lance and lash, driving them north and cutting down the laggards."
"Mouths on feet. And sick, you say?" Reznak wrung his hands. "Your Worship must not allow them in the city."
No easy roads for Daenerys Targaryen.
It's awful, but I don't think you can allow the bloody flux to enter the city.
+.+.+
"I wouldn't," said Brown Ben Plumm. "I'm no maester, mind you, but I know you got to keep the bad apples from the good."
"These are not apples, Ben," said Dany. "These are men and women, sick and hungry and afraid." My children. "I should have gone to Astapor."
Can she shut the fuck up with this?
God, I can't even applaud her basic empathy.
+.+.+
"You warned King Cleon against this war with Yunkai. The man was a fool, and his hands were red with blood."
And are my hands any cleaner?
Look at all this accountability.
+.+.+
She remembered what Daario had said—that all kings must be butchers, or meat.
Yes, yes. Let it happen.
+.+.+
The Shavepate disagreed. "If you had taken the Unsullied south to Hazzat, the Sons of the Harpy—"
"I know. I know. It is Eroeh all over again."
Brown Ben Plumm was puzzled. "Who is Eroeh?"
"A girl I thought I'd saved from rape and torment. All I did was make it worse for her in the end. And all I did in Astapor was make ten thousand Eroehs."
Strong chapter for Daenerys.
I'm being sincere.
+.+.+
"What is done is done," said Reznak mo Reznak. "Your Worship, I beg you, take the noble Hizdahr for your king at once. He can speak with the Wise Masters, make a peace for us."
"On what terms?" Beware the perfumed seneschal, Quaithe had said. The masked woman had foretold the coming of the pale mare, was she right about the noble Reznak too?
I want to take this opportunity to spotlight her small council.
Groleo advises her to use her dragons to burn the ships that block the bay.
Skahaz Shavepate advises her to kill family members of the Meereenese nobles, and torture Hizdahr to learn the Harpy's identity.
Reznak mo Reznak wants her to marry Hizdahr to make peace.
Brown Ben Plumm wants her to use her dragons against Yunkai, and waste gold on bribing sellswords.
Barristan Selmy wants to fight Yunkai in an open field, while she's at war with her own people inside the walls.
Daario Naharis wants her to slaughter everyone.
Now, I have two questions for you.
Which character gives the best counsel?
Which character does she trust the least?
+.+.+
"I may be a young girl innocent of war, but I am not a lamb to walk bleating into the harpy's den. I still have my Unsullied. I have the Stormcrows and the Second Sons. I have three companies of freedmen."
"Them, and dragons," said Brown Ben Plumm, with a grin.
"In the pit, in chains," wailed Reznak mo Reznak. "What good are dragons that cannot be controlled? Even the Unsullied grow fearful when they must open the doors to feed them."
[...]
"Pets?" screeched Reznak. "Monsters, rather. Monsters that feed on children. We cannot—"
"Silence," said Daenerys. "We will not speak of that."
Reznak shrank away from her, flinching from the fury in her tone. "Forgive me, Magnificence, I did not …"
He's her best adviser, and she's going to kill him.
Not only that, the fandom will defend it.
#JusticeForReznak
+.+.+
Brown Ben Plumm bulled over him. "Your Grace, the Yunkish got three free companies against our two, and there's talk the Yunkishmen sent to Volantis to fetch back the Golden Company. Those bastards field ten thousand. Yunkai's got four Ghiscari legions too, maybe more, and I heard it said they sent riders across the Dothraki sea to maybe bring some big khalasar down on us. We need them dragons, the way I see it."
The sellsword sees a loss on the horizon. What could that mean?
None of this is accurate.
Yunkai has two companies, not three. The Windblown are switching sides.
The Golden Company are not assisting Yunkai or coming to Meereen.
The four Ghiscari legions are not prepared for battle, and their leaders are unfit for command.
There's no khalasar coming down on Meereen unless Daenerys is leading them.
+.+.+
Plumm scratched at his speckled whiskers. "If there's no dragons in the balance, well … we should leave before them Yunkish bastards close the trap … only first, make the slavers pay to see our backs. They pay the khals to leave their cities be, why not us? Sell Meereen back to them and start west with wagons full o' gold and gems and such."
"You want me to loot Meereen and flee? No, I will not do that. Grey Worm, are my freedmen ready for battle?"
She'll definitely loot it and leave.
Sounds like ... Ben Plumm ... has fleeing ... on the mind.
+.+.+
Daenerys looked at the faces of the men around her. The Shavepate, scowling. Ser Barristan, with his lined face and sad blue eyes. Reznak mo Reznak, pale, sweating. Brown Ben, white-haired, grizzled, tough as old leather. Grey Worm, smooth-cheeked, stolid, expressionless. Daario should be here, and my bloodriders, she thought. If there is to be a battle, the blood of my blood should be with me. She missed Ser Jorah Mormont too. He lied to me, informed on me, but he loved me too, and he always gave good counsel.
Lots of talk dedicated to Cersei's incompetent small council, but how about this group? Yikes.
I guess the stage is set for Tyrion.
+.+.+
"You mean to take the field?" The Shavepate's voice was thick with disbelief. "That would be folly. Our walls are taller and thicker than the walls of Astapor, and our defenders are more valiant. The Yunkai'i will not take this city easily."
Ser Barristan disagreed. "I do not think we should allow them to invest us. Theirs is a patchwork host at best. These slavers are no soldiers. If we take them unawares …"
"Knights know only one way to solve a problem. They couch their lances and charge. A dwarf has a different way of looking at the world. What of you, though? You are a clever man yourself." - Tyrion II, ADWD
+.+.+
Brown Ben scratched his chin. "Might be we could get some o' them to come over. If Your Grace could spare a few bags o' gold and gems … just to give their captains a good taste, as it were … well, who knows?"
I'm starting ... to think ... Brown Ben ... is up ... to no good.
+.+.+
"Buy them, why not?" Dany said. That sort of thing went on all the time amongst the free companies of the Disputed Lands, she knew.
Did she just give gold and gems to a sellsword? What a dumbass.
You want me to loot Meereen and flee?
+.+.+
"It shall be done, Magnificence," said Reznak mo Reznak. "What of these Astapori?"
My children.
I can't with this.
+.+.+
Ser Barristan frowned. "Your Grace, I have known the bloody flux to destroy whole armies when left to spread unchecked. The seneschal is right. We cannot have the Astapori in Meereen."
Dany looked at him helplessly. It was good that dragons did not cry. Dany looked at him helplessly. It was good that dragons did not cry. "As you say, then. We will keep them outside the walls until this … this curse has run its course. Set up a camp for them beside the river, west of the city. We will send them what food we can. Perhaps we can separate the healthy from the sick."
Love that she called it a curse.
I think she did well here.
+.+.+
The old rhyme rang in her head. Ash and bone is Astapor, and ash and bone its people. She tried to recall Eroeh's face, but the dead girl's features kept turning into smoke.
If I look back I am lost.
+.+.+
When Daenerys finally turned away, Ser Barristan stood near her, wrapped in his white cloak against the chill of evening. "Can we make a fight of this?" she asked him.
"Men can always fight, Your Grace. Ask rather if we can win. Dying is easy, but victory comes hard. Your freedmen are half-trained and unblooded. Your sellswords once served your foes, and once a man turns his cloak he will not scruple to turn it again. You have two dragons who cannot be controlled, and a third that may be lost to you. Beyond these walls your only friends are the Lhazarene, who have no taste for war."
It can be Brown Ben AND Daario! George, please!
+.+.+
"I know." The queen sighed. "What do you counsel, ser?"
"Battle," said Ser Barristan. "Meereen is overcrowded and full of hungry mouths, and you have too many enemies within. We cannot long withstand a siege, I fear. Let me meet the foe as he comes north, on ground of my own choosing."
I am no Hand, a part of him wanted to cry out. I am only a simple knight, the queen's protector. - The Queen's Hand, ADWD
He's actually a disaster.
Going to battle when there's conflict within her own walls is madness.
+.+.+
"Or five. And if I give you the Unsullied, I will have no one but the Brazen Beasts to hold Meereen." When Ser Barristan did not dispute her, Dany closed her eyes. Gods, she prayed, you took Khal Drogo, who was my sun-and-stars. You took our valiant son before he drew a breath. You have had your blood of me. Help me now, I pray you. Give me the wisdom to see the path ahead and the strength to do what I must to keep my children safe.
The gods did not respond.
How is Daenerys smarter than Barristan Selmy? How is that even possible?
Gods don't answer prayers, Daenerys. You must follow your heart, follow Daario.
+.+.+
When she opened her eyes again, Daenerys said, "I cannot fight two enemies, one within and one without. If I am to hold Meereen, I must have the city behind me. The whole city. I need … I need …" She could not say it.
"Your Grace?" Ser Barristan prompted, gently.
A queen belongs not to herself but to her people.
"I need Hizdahr zo Loraq."
Horrific counsel from start to finish, yet somehow she manages to land on the only right solution - the Reznak option.
#JusticeForReznak
Again, impressive chapter from Daenerys, so I'm sure the next one will be a shitshow. Where's Daario when you need him?

Bat diversity and abundance are highest in old deciduous forest stands on the river banks in Eastern Ukraine
European forest-dwelling bats require complex woodland structures at both the micro-habitat and the landscape level for successful breeding in summer. Particularly, the results from Kharkiv region (Eastern Ukraine) demonstrate that large stands of mature forests older than 90 years improved the breeding activity of bats, their abundance and overall species richness. Abundance and species richness increased from upland plots surrounded by agricultural lands to riverine or waterside plots with high forest cover. These are the results of a newly published paper in the scientific journal “Forests” by an international team of authors from the Ukrainian Bat Rehabilitation Center (UBRC) and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW).
Mature deciduous forests are the most targeted forest type for logging because of the high potential revenues from selling timber on international markets. Biodiversity associated with these forest stands is therefore threatened worldwide. One group of species that is a key conservation target are bats. In their investigation the scientific team around first author Dr Anton Vlaschenko from UBRC and Dr Viktoriia Radchuk from Leibniz-IZW asked how bat diversity is affected by land cover types and the age of forest stands in the Kharkiv region in northeastern Ukraine, in an area on the border between forest-steppe and the steppe zone. The fragmented broadleaved forests typical for this region are common for temperate regions, but the relationships between bat diversity, land cover and forest structure remain largely understudied. Yet, understanding such relationships is of key importance for designing efficient conservation measures.
The results showed that logging intensity in the study region differed between districts and was not related to the amount of mature forests. This allowed the scientists to study how bat assemblages were influenced by the share of clear-cuts and mature forests in the landscape. “The most conspicuous result was a clear increase of bat diversity close to riverine habitats, further enhanced by the presence of mature forests with a mean age more than 90 years,” says co-author Dr Yehor Yatsiuk from the University of Tartu (Estonia). “Although old forests represent 22% of all forests in the Kharkiv region, the combination of mature oak forests and riverine habitats covers much smaller areas, considerably limiting areas suitable for bats.”
First author Anton Vlaschenko, Co-Head of UBRC, says: “The field data used in this study were collected over a long period, in more than ten years of summer field expeditions. It was a continuous effort and hard job. We camped in tents and spent hundreds of sleepless nights near mist-nets. Later on, we also had some challenges when analysing these data. We were close to wrapping up the manuscript at the end of 2021. The collaboration with Leibniz-IZW scientists and, after February 24, 2022, the three-months scholarship for me and our team members offered by Leibniz-IZW meant that we could finish this paper.”
“The first time I participated to the field research studying bats in 2009, as an undergraduate student. The data collected back then contributed to the current paper. Since then, bats have become my big passion and focus group for my current research. By investigating the ecological requirements of such enigmatic animals, we better understand ecological leverages of the natural world,” adds co-author Dr Kseniia Kravchenko from UBRC and Leibniz-IZW. Dr Yehor Yatsiuk continues: “My research is focused on associations between historical distribution of forests and management of animal species in eastern Ukraine. Over recent decades we observed an increase in clear-cutting intensity in this region. Our aim is to ensure protection of forest biodiversity here. Ten years ago, we initiated a series of projects aimed to survey the oldest and the largest forests here with the main focus on several groups of vulnerable species from land snails to birds of prey and bats.”
“Our study shows that old forests and riverine habitats are beneficial for breeding activity of bats, for abundance of single bat species and for the overall community composition. The fact that we see the same response to landscape structure across levels of ecological organisation underlines the importance of preserving mature oak stands and riverine habitats for conservation of bat diversity in the region. I enjoyed working with Kharkiv bat researchers a lot, their enthusiasm and group spirit inspired me,” adds senior author Dr Viktoriia Radchuk, scientist at the Leibniz-IZW Department of Ecological Dynamics.

The London Shadow Market - Centurions on a mission (Fan Fic)
This is a one-shot Tynush fan fic.
London Shadow Market. Centurions Tiberius Blackthorn and Anush Joshi are on mission for the Scholomance, tied to the First Heir, and Ty gets a bit overprotective.
It's a bit angsty and though there is mention of sex, there is no sex scene/smut.
Big thanks to @amchara who beta-read the fic (and notably helped with her thorough knowledge of London) and who also sparked the idea, since we discussed how there could never be enough of overprotective Blackthorns fic.
****
It was long past midnight and the London Shadow Market’s lights were fading one after the other. Fenwick was wrapping up for the night, muttering about what an awful evening it had been. Only a dozen customers buying baubles. Overpriced, but still. Long gone were the days where he could earn in an evening what now took him a month to scrounge. The new Inquisitor, Diego Rosales, was knowledgeable, relentless, and incorruptible. It didn’t help that the new Unseelie King also frowned on his barely-to-not-legal-at-all side businesses. The most profitable ones, as it happened. He still had the favour of the Seelie Queen, but even she, in her eagerness to make peace with King Kieran, was not as frequent a client as she used to be.
So, when he heard the bell ring announcing that a customer had just crossed the threshold of his magically enhanced oversized tent, Fenwick immediately perked up. His cheerful mood was of short duration.
Two dark-haired figures had stepped into his dimly lit tent, one at least a head taller than the other, but both with a graceful warrior stance that betrayed what they were despite the obscurity.
Shadowhunters. And not any kind. The worst kind if you asked him. Those who knew much more about the Fair Folk than the fey had ever cared to reveal. They even kept secrets from the other Nephilim. That’s how world-altering their knowledge was. Centurions. And they were in their black uniforms, their silvery pins gleaming in the light of the candles scattered around the tent, not even bothering to conceal their identity.
Fenwick was torn between bolting out – on the off chance that he managed to outrun them – to lay low in one of his numerous hideouts (for a few decades at least) and standing his ground, trying to weasel his way out of this uncomfortable situation. What made up his decision was the weariness that gripped him at the mere idea of running. The centuries he had strolled around the Earth made him feel like an overstretched rubber band.
“Well met, Sons of the Angel!” He said, forcing a cheerful tone.
“Well, met,” the smaller, wheatish-skinned one answered. He had a warm, lyrical voice. As he took a few steps forward inside the tent, Fenwick tried very hard not to flinch. Up close, he had a very handsome face, high cheekbones framing his narrow and delicate nose. Strong thick eyebrows made a perfect arc over his big almond-shaped brown eyes. His bright yet calm demeanour compelled you to trust him. But Fenwick knew better.
The taller one didn’t greet him. He was already strolling lazily around the tent, scanning the shelves. He was standing with his back to Fenwick, so that all that Fenwick could see of him was black hair and a dark uniform, a circle of thorns etched across the back of his jacket.
“What brings you to my humble shop?”
The question had been directed at the politest of the two, but he didn’t seem to hear, entirely focused on stealing covert glances at his fellow Centurion. His expression was wistful, almost reverent.
Fenwick considered it. He knew how lonely they got sometimes, hidden between harsh grounds and cold stones in the Carpathian Mountains. Some were known to suffer depression, if not mental illness. He used to interact frequently with them, in the past, until the Scholomance was closed in 1872, with the signing of the First Accords. He sold them information, and sometimes a good time.
“You are in luck, Centurions. I have several pretty mermaids who have just joined Fenwick’s lair. At least two of them have a kink for strong Nephilim such as yourselves.” After all, King Kieran had started a trend… “We also have the usual nixies, pixies, goblins, hobgoblins, brownies, and even a djinn for those who have more… particular tastes. Everything happens on Seelie territory and is strictly legal of course. I have the paperwork.”
The light brown skinned Centurion looked like he was trying very hard not to burst out laughing. He coughed a little to hide it before swiftly saying, “Nothing of the sort.”
“We heard you were selling. We are buying.” The taller one spoke for the first time. He had a deep voice, with a rich timber to it. As he glanced over his shoulder, the candles’ light played along his face, revealing his striking features. Fenwick stifled a gasp. His merchant’s mind was already calculating what he could earn with such a possession. Faerie lords – even princes – would pay handsomely – a fortune – to enjoy the boy’s company.
“What is it that you care to acquire from old Fenwick?” he said in a honey voice. “Certainly not a love potion. Someone who looks like you must never be in need of it.” The Centurion’s expression remained impassive, yet Fenwick thought he saw a shadow flicker across his eyes. “Your pretty face is so much like a faerie’s. I almost took you for one of our kind.”
The other Centurion cleared his throat loudly, and when he had caught Fenwick’s attention, shot him a glare, his deep brown eyes cold as ice. A warning. Fenwick knew in that instant that if he ever wanted to get his hands on the pretty Nephilim, he would have to go through his companion first.
“What we want…” he said in a clipped tone, “cannot be touched, tasted, or inhaled.”
“Information, then,” Fenwick replied automatically upon hearing the code. A chill went up his spine. Did they know? Only one way to find out. “And what type of information do you seek?”
“You know exactly which one. Please do not waste any more precious minutes of our mortal lives. Name your price.”
Fenwick told him. The Centurion approached Fenwick’s counter and, without a word, retrieved a pouch from inside his jacket - Fenwick recognized it as fey craftsmanship of the finest sort and, though it did not bear the Unseelie Court’s sigil, had most certainly come from it - and started counting bills. His curiosity got the better of him.
“What do you want with the First Heir?” He blurted. “I didn’t know it was the Scholomance’s job to look for him. Other Nephilim – if not as skilled – have already been assigned to the task.”
“We have the money. Our business with him is our own,” he replied dismissively.
Fenwick glanced at the other tall Centurion, who had remained silent during the exchange. He had retrieved a crystal orb from one of the shelves and was turning it over in his long pale fingers.
“Careful with that! It’s fragile! And expensive. If you break it, you pay it.”
“Twenty-one,” he replied.
“Pray tell?”
“The number of laws you have broken with the content of these shelves. I am not talking about the items you keep in your back store.”
“Tiberius,” his companion warned, before forcing a smile to Fenwick’s benefit. “Here’s the money. Give us the information and we’ll be on our way.”
Fenwick’s gaze zeroed on the bills spread over his counter. He did the usual checks, doing as best as he could to hide his excitement.
“Okay,” he drawled, when they had come out to be the real deal. He gave them the First Heir’s address. The Centurion’s lips twitched but his face remained otherwise blank. He acknowledged with a stiff nod and whirled around.
“I can give you one more information. Free of charge.”
The Centurion paused and glanced over his shoulder, an eyebrow raised in question.
“The First Heir. He has power beyond your wildest imagination. Even mighty warriors such as yourselves will have a hard time capturing him. But he has a family that he loves dearly and would be willing to die for. If you take his little sister hostage, you can obtain whatever you want from him.”
Fenwick startled at the sound of glass shattering. He glanced over to find that the tall, silent, Nephilim – Tiberius, his companion had called him – had closed his long fingers on the orb, with apparently enough pressure and force that it had broken into multiple shards. He was now watching with remote interest as blood escaped from his clenched fist and started running like crimson strings over his knuckles and wrist. He didn’t look the least bit concerned by the sight.
“Hey! You will pay for this!” Fenwick said, taking consolation in the fact that, as expensive as the item was, they probably had the money.
“That’s funny,” Tiberius said in a tone that suggested it wasn’t at all. “I was about to say the exact same thing.”
He hadn’t seen him coming, but from one moment to the next, the Nephilim was in Fenwick’s face, a dagger pressed against the fey’s throat.
Fenwick thought he looked more animal than human as he cocked his head, his gray eyes feral. “Earlier you said that I look like a fey. Well, there is at least one trait that I share with the Fair Folk. I. Don’t. Lie. So, trust me when I tell you this. If you so much as harm a hair on that little girl’s head, my pretty face will be the last thing you’ll ever see. The same goes for any other member of her family. I will hunt you down, scour each one of your rabbit holes and I don’t care if it takes every single second I have left of my mortal life.”
“Tiberius,” the other Centurion crooned. “Tiberius. We are done here. Let’s go home.” Fenwick realized with a jolt of surprise that he had moved soundlessly to rest his hand on Tiberius’ shoulder and was rubbing it, tracing small circles around the joint. It was such an intimate gesture that Fenwick wondered if he had misread earlier when he had thought to witness unrequited love.
Tiberius blinked a few times, then started whispering urgently under his breath. Fenwick couldn’t make sense of what he was saying. It sounded like random words. The Centurion finally narrowed his gaze at Fenwick and mouthed “I don’t lie” one last time before he whirled and both Nephilim disappeared in a blur of dark fabric, out of the tent and into the night, as swiftly as they had come. Fenwick, frozen in terror, hoped with all his immortal’s heart that all of it had only been a bad dream.
***
Anush exhaled the cold and moist London air, his breath coming in frosty white puffs, as he drew an Iratze on the back of Ty’s hand. It had become so frequent lately that he sometimes caught himself wishing Centurions were allowed to be parabatai so that his runes were more effective, but discarded the idea as soon as it crossed his mind. He would not have been allowed to feel the way he did about Ty. And parabatai definitely did not do the things they did.
“I can’t believe he lived during the time of Berlioz. Do you think he met him? If so, I would have a thousand more questions to ask him.”
Ty didn’t answer. He was lost in thought, stroking his heron-shaped pendant with his free hand, his face pale as the moon tilted upwards toward the night sky as if he was counting the stars.
“Hey,’ Anush said softly. “It was the wrong address. So that’s one more snitch to strike off our list.”
“He had the right country, though. That’s a first. They’re closing in.”
“That’s okay, Ty. We will be one step ahead, as always.”
Anush had probably not been convincing enough, as Ty suddenly tensed, his breathing coming in short, shallow gasps, and his hand, still resting in Anush’s palm, started shaking. Anush closed his fingers around Ty’s and murmured soothing words that he knew his fellow Centurion liked, as he gently rubbed his shoulder with his free hand. “Whisper, glass, twin, secret, stars, cloud, castle, crystal, Christopher…”
Ty’s shoulders relaxed slightly. He closed his eyes and took a deep shuddering breath.
“Hey,” Anush whispered. “It’s going to be fine. We will do double shifts. Starting tomorrow. Who needs sleep anyway?”
Ty sighed, relief plain on his marble face. His eyelashes fanned out over his sharp cheekbones and Anush resisted the urge to kiss them. “Thank you. For sticking with me through all this. I know it’s not easy.”
“I didn’t have better plans anyway,” Anush shrugged it off.
Ty opened his eyes and turned his sharp gaze on Anush, still not looking him in the eye but somewhere around his chin. Close enough.
“You know what I mean.”
He knew exactly what Ty meant. The reasons for Ty’s obsession with the First Heir was a subject they never broached. But it was there, like a third presence in their relationship. If you could call what they had a relationship. It was, for Anush at least. He would go to hell and back for Ty, and so would Ty for him. But that didn’t mean he loved him. That’s just how loyal and selfless Ty was.
Anush would always remember the day Ty and him had volunteered to handle the top secret missions tied to the First Heir. Ty had adamantly refused Anush’s involvement, but of course, it was not entirely up to him. Anush was very stubborn. They had both sat in Jia Penhallow’s office and she had asked Ty to leave them alone afterwards. She had looked into Anush’s eyes and had spoken to him earnestly. “These are very dangerous missions, Anush. The most dangerous missions we currently have at the Scholomance. You are a brilliant Centurion, but are you sure you want to do this? I know Tiberius has… personal reasons for volunteering, but what about you?” He had swallowed hard. “Anywhere Tiberius goes, I go.” Her dark eyes had softened. “Anush. Have you really thought this through? I know how much you care about Tiberius but… has he told you why he has chosen to do this?” “I am not Tiberius-smart, but I am not stupid,” he had replied. “The First Heir. He’s in love with him.” The deep sadness and understanding in her eyes had almost made him cry and he had dug his nails into his palms, his jaw working as he withheld tears. “It doesn’t matter,’ he had said through clenched teeth. “Whatever happens, I will be there for him. In any capacity I can.” And it was plain from her expression that she knew he was not only talking about their missions for the Scholomance.
As he now looked into Tiberius’ gray eyes, at his beautiful features that were nothing compared to his gentle and unique heart, Anush felt a deep rush of love mixed with longing. Ty would never be his. He already belonged to someone else. But Anush would give Tiberius any part of him that he wanted.
He took a deep breath before he answered.
“I do. I am not giving you a choice anyway. You’re stuck with me.” Always.
Ty looked down, as if he couldn’t bear the weight of Anush’s gaze on him.
“I didn’t thank you for… earlier. I almost lost it back there.”
“Don’t mention it,” Anush replied. “That’s what I am here for. At least he took your threat seriously.”
“As he should.”
Ty was still playing with the pendant tied around his neck. Anush brought his free hand on top of Ty’s, intertwining their fingers.
“I love your hands,” he whispered to Ty. “I wouldn’t want them to get soiled.” He tiptoed to bring his lips closer to Ty’s ear, almost brushing. “Especially now that I have experienced their full potential.”
Ty turned his face away but not before Anush saw his cheeks flush and the corner of his mouth quirk. Anush loved how he was still shy about these things.
He looked at the dark cobbled street before them.
“Fenwick’s minions must already be on their way.”
Ty cocked his head. “Coming from the west. They’re a mile or two ahead of us. Judging by their pace, they should be upon us in about five minutes.”
Anush nodded. Ty sometimes knew things – as if he had an invisible spy everywhere they went – and Anush had stopped questioning it. If Ty had wanted to share, he would have. Anush would not press him.
“Tactic?”
“Split. Confuse. Divide and conquer.”
“Good. I need the exercise. You take north by the river, I take south and we meet up west?”
Ty nodded, already veering in the opposite direction, two swords drawn.
“Meet you at Blackthorn Hall,” Anush cried out to him, as he started walking backwards. “First one there gets the biggest room.”
“Dream on,” he thought he heard Ty reply. He tried to catch one last glimpse of him for good luck but he had already been swallowed by the night.
***
Tiberius got there first. But he let Anush pick his favourite bedroom. All bedrooms in Blackthorn Hall were decorated with different themes, that one had a landscape - the view from the LA Institute’s rooftop, Ty had explained - painted over an entire wall, opposite the huge canopy bed. Anush found it quite soothing.
“Fenwick sent an army,” he said as he drew several Iratzes on Ty’s back. He whistled. “You must have scared the shit out of him.” They had managed to get rid of the last of Fenwick’s minions by drowning them in the Thames. Ty had a few fey allies lurking underneath the surface. Creatures he had helped escape from captivity.
When he was finished, Tiberius rose from the bed and Anush watched as he stored the bandages and gauze in a small cabinet in a corner of the room. He was naked from the waist up and Anush’s gaze lingered on his fellow Centurion’s lean and muscular back, a canvas way too beautiful for black Runes and faded scars that were now so familiar he could draw them from memory. His dark curls were still wet from the dive into the river.
Anush crossed his arms behind his head and settled comfortably against the headboard.
“Ty?”
“Yeah?”
“Fuck me.”
Tiberius stilled, his bare shoulders hunched.
“What, now?”
“Yes now. I want you.”
Ty slowly closed the cabinet’s door and turned to look at Anush, his gray eyes unreadable.
“Anush… My brother Julian is here. His bedroom is a few meters down the corridor.“
“So? It’s not as if he doesn’t know what we are up to. You're so lucky he’s smart and open-minded. The coolest. I wish my parents were the same. If they knew the things we did, they would probably drag me to Naraka themselves.”
“Anush…” Ty said softly. “You know it wouldn’t make any difference if you were a girl… I would say the same thing.”
“We won’t make any noise!”
Tiberius raised a dark eyebrow. Anush let out a deep sigh.
“Yeah, I know. It’s not my fault if you turn into this beast I barely recognize under the bed sheets.”
“I don’t hear you complaining.”
“Oh the noises I make are definitely not me complaining. Mister Hyde can have a ride anytime.”
Ty gave him one of his rare wicked smiles… The ones that always got Anush’s heart rate into high gear. He put his shirt back on and moved soundlessly to the door.
“Ty,” Anush called.
Tiberius paused, his hand on the doorknob.
“Yeah?”
“Stay for the night. No noisy and sweaty sex. Just…lie down next to me.”
“Anush,” Ty breathed, his look apologetic. And Anush braced himself for what would come next. The blow to his chest. Because he already knew what Ty would say. “Anush. You know I can’t sleep that way.”
“Yeah, no problem, I understand. Raziel knows we definitely need the rest.” Anush tried to reply in a light tone but the pitch of his voice rose awkwardly at the end. “It’s okay. Good night Ty.”
“Good night, Anush.”

Dear Gods (Ivar x Reader)
Tumblr media
A.N.: this was a request by @unabashedgentlemenpirate, hope its okay! Criticism is welcome
Summary: Multiple miscarriages later you’re finally pregnant with Ivar’s child. Its too good to be true and it is, as the birth of your son resembles Ivar almost too well.
Characters: Ivar x Reader
Warnings: miscarriages, birth and fluff
Word Count: 1782
-------------------------------
The day of our third child's birth came quicker than I thought. Well, it had only been four months in, and the only thing that left my womb was blood and the unbearable pain of another child lost. Covered in my own blood and beads of sweat lining my chest and face the mix of tears only added to the mess.
Ivar had left the room as soon as the mess appeared. I knew he was going to head to the hall or speak to Ubbe about the unfortunate news, but I couldn't cry or sob anymore. I was numb, and the thralls helped clean me up before helping me into Ivar, and I's shared bed.
It had been a couple hours, I had laid in bed waiting for Ivar to come back. Being the third miscarriage, it didn't hurt that he'd left, if anything I expected it. His ego was hurt, but I reassured him it wasn't his fault he still carried the burden that it was the gods doing. Making his life even worse.
The sound of crutch, thump, crutch, thump on the timber signalled for Ivar's return. The noise was softer as the door opened. He was trying to be quiet, but I couldn't bear it, I turn my body to face him, and I couldn't help my sobs as his tired face comes into view from the candlelight.
"Oh, Ivar." His face softens as he limps towards me. He sits on the side of me, resting his crutch to the bed's edge before he leans himself over me. His hand reaches to my stomach, bare with no child. The other hand reaches to my cheek, and he just stares, studying my face. Rubbing his fingers under my eyes to wipe away the loose tears.
He clenches his jaw at this, but his concern does not falter. "Do not be sad, my love, the gods, will not discourage us." Placing my hand on his cheek, I smile in between tears. His hopeful attitudes lifted my sadness slightly. But the sorrow in my gut in the loss would not falter.
————
It had been a couple of months since our last lost child. To find that I was pregnant again was scary, to say the least. To think that I was carrying a child that may or may not reach the full term of its growth was horrifying. Once the child grew to 8 months, Ivar and I were beyond happy. We were incredibly close to the last term and in saying that Ivar had ordered, I was to rest and eat food that healers recommended for the prosperity of the unborn child.
That's what led to lying in bed all day, every day, with a hand secured on my full belly watching Ivar seated in front of parchment illustrated with maps. Having not been outside in a few days, I decided I needed to get some fresh air. Slowly rolling onto the side, I use my arms and the strength I have left to sit myself up onto the bed. Ivar's body shifts to turn to face me, he gets up fast crutching the table before reaching for the bed in an attempt to get support for his legs. He reaches for me, grasping at my hand. "Y/n, you must rest." I shake my head and sigh.
"Ivar, I know you're worried about our child and me, but I need some fresh air. They keep moving, and it's uncomfortable for me.” Ivar sighs and he sits there in silence watching me. His hand reaches to my belly before he rubs it gently.
“I will fetch Ubbe,” I shake my head and laugh. He heaves himself up off the bed and reaches for his crutch. Completely ignoring my distate for company he hobbles out our chambers and returns soon after I had fixed my hair and gown.
Ubbe walked in with a large smile on his face and all I could do was smile. “Sister-in-law,” he greets me,
“Ivar I can walk by myself. Ubbe you don’t need to, I will just take rounds around the market.” His smile softens before he offers his arm for me to take.
“Do not worry Ivar, she will be in good hands.” Ivar smiles in my direction and I notice his continuing glare as we leave into the streets.
------
"How is Torvi? I have not spoken to her in days," Ubbe nods and his smile only widens at the thought of Torvi. I couldn't stop my smile at his expression, yet the sharp pain in my abdomen stops me in my tracks. The market was filled with sellers, they paid no attention, but Ubbe did.
"Y/n you alright?" I hunch my back and grasp my belly. Pure anxiety and fear overwhelmed me, and I knew I needed to get back to Ivar, and I needed a healer. I did not want this day to end in another tragedy. I didn't want this to be the fourth baby.
"I need Ivar," he nods in response, and he motions for me to wrap my arm his neck to help me back. Luckily we hadn't gone too far, but it felt like an eternity as the anxiety grew as the pain returned. Rushing back into our shared room, Ubbe called for Ivar before running for a healer. I hadn't heard Ivar's steps as quickly as I heard them enter. His face looked tense, with jaw clenched and his hair ruffled and loose in his braids.
He came to the side, letting go of the crutch he sat on the floor. Completing disregarding the crutch. I lay in our bed, with a hand clutched on my unborn baby. The pain was different; it felt a burning sensation and cramp-like pains in my lower abdomen.
I was hoping the healers would come soon and identify the pain. To tell me my baby was not dying. "I told you to stay here," Ivar says. Frustration is evident in his voice as he grasps my hand tight. I said nothing, I just stared off in the distance wallowing in my fears.
The healer has rushed into the room. An old woman with a concerned expression on features she rushes to my side. Pressing into my stomach and feeling the hands she smiles in my direction. I study her face waiting for an answer. She does not falter at Ivar's distaste and lack of patience. This hadn't been the first she'd felt Ivar's anger during these circumstances.
"My Queen, your child is on their way." I couldn't stop the laugh that escapes. Complete joy and happiness overwhelm me, being so grateful that the pain I was feeling meant they were coming. Ivar grabs at my stomach and then grasps my face in his hands before he kisses me. Grabbing his face in response, we both laugh in joy.
"He's coming."
"You think its a boy?" The healer asks. No preserve for Ivar's usual threatening attitude I smile at her question.
"I think its a boy," I interject. Rubbing at my belly at Ivar, who smiles proudly at my response. The healer sits by my side, checking up on my progress before I feel another sharp and immense pain, I groan.
----
It had been under twelve hours before I pushed the last one I could muster. I had been exhausted. Ivar had been pushed out the room and Torvi had entered the room along with three other thralls to be there to clean and to support me. I was glad I was around women I trusted, but I needed Ivar.
I felt a significant relief leaves my body as I pushed. However, the cries of the baby did not come. I waited and attempted to look over my bloody and wet gown to see my child. The healer peered up at me and swallowed.
"What's going on?!" They looked to one another before looking back to me. "Please, someone say something! Give me my child!" Before I could cry out again, the sounds of crying swallow the room. The healer huffs in relief, but her face remains stoic. She looks to Torvi before wrapping it in a cloth.
"This is your boy, y/n." Passing me my child, I press him close to my chest. His cries are loud, and I couldn't help crying in joy at the sight of a bloodied wrinkly baby who continued to wail in my chest.
"Y/n, his legs." Looking up towards Torvi who looked over me and pulled apart the cloth to reveal the deformed legs of my boy. I didn' t know what to say, but I did not feel disappointment but sadness. Not knowing how Ivar would react. "I need Ivar," I say with tears falling down my face. I wrap him back up and rock him against my chest, in an attempt to calm the crying baby. The thralls push my sticky hair from my sweaty forehead. Torvi motions for them to exit the room and I am more than pleased for them to leave.
Once they leave the door is opened yet I see no one enter. Not until I hear the sound of dragging against the timber floor that I notice Ivar coming towards the bed, hauling himself across the floor. I hadn't seen him do this in some time, and it comforted me knowing he felt comfortable.
"Oh, Ivar. Our son is here." Completely disregarding his deformity I watch as Ivar heaves himself up onto the side of me, his face written in calm. I hadn't seen him like this before. Motioning to the sleeping baby in the bundle of cloths Ivar reaches his arms to wrap them around the baby before picking him up. "Ivar," I say, but he interrupts me.
"Shh." He undoes the cloth from its legs and I watch in concern to his reaction. I would hope that our miracle baby would be enough for Ivar. Ivar eyes the baby's deformity before clenching his jaw. Wrapping him back up, he looks towards me. Anxiety bubbled in my gut, and I swallowed harshly.
"Ragnar," is all he says and I furrow in confusion.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
"We will name him Ragnar," I smile at his words, he says nothing but looks down to the small boy in his arms. "He will be fearless, he will be strong, and everyone will love him." I smile at his words. "Dear gods, may everyone fear his name." I shake my head. Oh Ivar. I watch as he kisses Ragnar's forehead and runs his thumb over his nose.
He was our miracle, by the Gods.

Appalachian Anomaly
At the annual Table Rock Writers Workshop last week, our special guest was Emily Nunn, a native of southwest Virginia and author of The Comfort Food Diaries, published in 2017 by Simon & Schuster. Emily read from the memoir in which she discovers that comfort food is less about the dish and more about its preparation. Food can be a way to express the deepest care without saying a word. Cooking for others can be more comforting than eating itself.
After her presentation, Emily, who also created the “Table for Two” column in the New Yorker magazine when she worked there, revealed a recent discovery—a wood-fired pizza joint in an unlikely place—Roan Mountain, Tennessee, the little village at the base of the high peak that divides North Carolina and Tennessee. Back in the 19th century, the winding road to the top, then very narrow and precarious, allowed traffic in one direction (toward Tennessee) in the mornings and then became one way toward North Carolina in the afternoons. Hardscrabble mountain people made the passage on foot, by hack, and on horseback as they could.
Eventually, in 1894, a resort hotel called The Cloudland was built right on the state line near the peak at 6,286 feet. Travelers could rent rooms with spring mattresses, copper tubs, and steam heat for two dollars a night, a fee which also included three meals. The state line was painted on the dining room floor at the Cloudland, because those seated in Tennessee could order an alcoholic beverage to go with their meals, but those who were on the North Carolina side could not. The Mitchell County (NC) sheriff reportedly came often at dinnertime to patrol the border, hoping some of those imbibing in Tennessee might accidentally stumble across the state line into North Carolina, presumably then being forced to pay a fine as steep as the slopes of the Roan.
Anyway, I digress.
Emily’s report of the Roan Mountain pizza was so evocative that Donna Campbell and I set out at week’s end to sample it. I have reported here on Pie on the Mountain in Lansing, NC, and Big Ed’s Pizza in Oak Ridge, TN. Both restaurants feature righteously fresh ingredients, including the now-ubiquitous Benton’s Tennessee Bacon. However, the pinnacle of pizzas for me is in Carrboro, NC, where Gabe Barker--the son of James Beard Award-winning chefs Karen and Ben Barker--makes ten-inch Neapolitan miracles at his Pizzeria Mercato.
Gabe has developed a handcrafted thin yeast dough that blisters to perfection in his gas-fired oven. The Mercato toppings vary with the season--organic vegetables and meats from the Carrboro Farmer’s Market across the street and the finest imports of Castelvetrano olives, Italian cheeses, and dried Calabrian chiles. Gabe’s most sublime creation to date is a grilled sweet corn and Gorgonzola pizza topped with razor thin slices of Serrano pepper scattered sparsely enough to open the sinuses without numbing the tongue. But I digress again.
On the way to Tennessee Donna and I studied the Smoky Mountain Bakery’s online menu and agreed on the Gourmet Veggie and the Hiker’s Surprise.  All of their pizzas are more-or-less 12 inches and range in price from ten to twelve dollars with a maximum of twelve toppings.  When we arrived on Cloudland Drive, we couldn’t see the restaurant from the road, only a bank of sunflowers just beginning to bend toward autumn.

The sign out front
Ten years ago, Tim and Crystal Decker, both northern Californians and seasoned chefs, set up shop in a renovated barn to create this Appalachian anomaly.  He is a European-style artisanal bread maker and she is a pastry expert. Their son Anton, a musician, also takes a turn in the kitchen.
If Gabe Barker’s place in Carrboro is urban chic—concrete floors and recycled timber tables and benches—this place is shabby seventies. No frills, no fuss. A throwback to hippiedom.
Breakfast is still under way when we walk in, served until 10:45—omelets, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, Belgian waffles, and pastries. The pizza oven is blazing by 11:00. The line soon runs out the door, and inside you find yourself waiting amid stock storage—cardboard boxes piled high and to-go pizzas already stacked in boxes on a low bench for pick-up beside the cashier’s station. A glass cabinet holds cherry pinwheels, lemon crinkles, coconut macaroons, snicker doodles, blueberry scones, red velvet sandwich cookies filled with cream cheese, banana bran muffins, and little loaves of pumpkin bread laced with walnuts and cranberries. A sign above these treats reads: “Stressed is desserts spelled backwards.”  On the opposite wall, a metal baker’s rack on wheels is heaped with chocolate chip cookies and sweet rolls in plastic bags to go.
Eight young people are navigating around the flour-covered worktable in the kitchen. Two are rolling out dough, another is chopping toppings. Another slathers on tomato sauce while the young man closest to the hot maw of the oven wields the pizza shovel with grace. The rest take turns taking orders and swiping credit cards through nothing more than an iPhone.
Down the line, salads of frisee, mesclun mix, luscious cherry tomatoes, and random red beans sit in closed clam shells on refrigerator shelves for the taking. Three bucks per salad or two for five, DIY. Commercial dressings, however, come sealed in packets at the ordering window—the only disappointment, as it turns out. On down the line, self-serve fountain drinks with free refills are two dollars. There are a few tables inside; many more outside on the wrap around deck.
We place our order, take a number, and find communal benches at a long picnic table out back in sunlight dappled by a half-dozen black walnut trees towering over two sides of the deck. There is a vegetable garden, now waning, in the sideyard. Trees up the hill beyond are rounded sculptures of kudzu. Tendrils trail down and wave in the breeze. A sudden waft of woodsmoke heightens my appetite. We prepare with paper plates, napkins, plastic cutlery, and condiments, including red chile flakes and a shaker of parmesan that doesn’t taste like sawdust. All of these acoutrements are anchored against the wind in plastic bins on each table.  The service is surprisingly quick.

Gourmet Veggie and Hiker’s Surprise. All photos by Donna Campbell
The Gourmet Veggie pie comes first--backroad-Italian rustic—chunky onions, generous bites of artichoke, a heavy hand of cheese.  Yet, the dominant taste is salty black Kalamata olives and sweet sundried tomatoes—both flavors intensified by the oven’s heat.  I suspect the tomatoes are local and dried on the premises. Fantastic.
Next out, the Hiker’s Surprise lives up to its name immediately. What is that crunch?  Besides the saltine-like crust, there are deliciously browned chunks of walnut. Wow. The walnut pieces have been laid down on a light brush of pesto and then slyly covered by slabs of mushroom, more sun-dried tomatoes and caramelized onions, and the silky melt of Gorgonzola. The only thing I can imagine that might add to this magic is a handful of sliced red grapes spread and roasted over the top. (I mention this addition only to work in another  pizza joint recommendation in Fayetteville, West Virginia, near the New River Gorge. Pies and Pints is the name—Gorgonzola and Grape is the pizza’s appelation.)
So, Miss Emily Nunn, you do not disappoint. These pizzas are a rare find, an unusual amalgam of flavors in an even more unlikely place. But as you told us last week at the writing workshop, the comfort often comes in the odd mix at the table. Or as she put it near the end of her book:
“Luckily, I had figured out that life was not a banquet at all but a potluck. A party celebrating nothing but the desire to be together, where everyone brings what they have, what they are able to at any given time, and it is accepted with equal love and equanimity.”
That’s how it was for us at the writing workshop--sharing what we had brought unvarnished, both our manuscripts and our personal stories, mostly told at table when we stopped long enough to eat. And so it was at this Appalachian anomaly—Californians making pizzas and pastries on the side of an ancient mountain. We declared our gratitude in the moment, delighting in the many tastes unfolding, bite after bite, on a not-exactly-round but satisfying crust.

How COVID-19 Impacted on Global Lumber Pallet Market ?
Tumblr media
Impact of COVID-19 on Global Lumber Pallet Market in Chemical and Materials Industry
ANALYSIS ON IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON THE GLOBAL LUMBER PALLET MARKET
The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the whole planet with its major impacts on the economy and businesses across the globe. The COVID-19 spread worldwide in unprecedented ways due to its high infectious and contagious nature and lack of availability of its vaccine. As a result, the greatest medical challenge in the 21st century is yet to be faced by physicians worldwide. Though the emergence of the virus can be traced back to Asia, many European countries along with the U.S. have been struck massively by the pandemic. The virus has spread across all regions ranging from North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East, and Africa up to South America. The COVID-19 has been declared as a pandemic by World Health Organization (WHO) due to its increased spread across the globe. After the declaration of the pandemic, various countries announced the complete lockdown, such as India, China, and other Asian countries to decrease its spread. According to the situation report of 7th June, 2021 by WHO stated 174 million cases of the corona have been reported globally and 3.7 million patients are dead due to the coronavirus. On a slightly positive note, a total of 157 million people have recovered and total of 1.9 million vaccine doses have been administered as well.
The spread of the COVID-19 virus has caused disruptions on wood availability which has seriously affected the production of lumber pallets.
A pallet is a flat transport structure that supports goods in a stable fashion while being lifted by a forklift, a pallet jack, a front loader, a jacking device, or an erect crane. A pallet is the structural foundation of a unit load which allows handling and storage efficiencies. Goods or shipping containers are often placed on a pallet secured with strapping, stretch wrap or shrink wrap and shipped.
Since its invention in the twentieth century, its use has dramatically supplanted older forms of crating such as the wooden box and the wooden barrel, as it works well with modern packaging such as corrugated boxes and intermodal containers commonly used for bulk shipping.
Wood prices rose due to reduction in mill operations and closures, combined with an upswing in domestic home improvements. Those consumers, who spend more money on the purchase of residence, now have lesser money which results in potential dampening of the economic recovery. Shortages of containers lag in unloading at ports shortage of commercial truckers had slowed down the road transport of lumber pallets.
Lumber features do not create cash prices; they do, however, generate a present view of an equilibrium price. If buyers are more eager than sellers, prices tend to go up. When the opposite is true, price tend go down. Softwood is the primary source for much world in production of lumber with traditional centres of production being the Baltic region and North America. These are indicating that in near future, North America will take over the worldwide market lead as the future contract specifies that lumber must be manufactured in certain specific U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
The spread of COVID-19 affected and disrupted the forest related supply chains, which have resulted in a sharp decline in exports and imports throughout the world. Across the global demand for wood and wood products, including tropical timber graphic paper and lumber furniture has decreased.
IMPACT ON PRICE
The outbreak of COVID-19 has caused a number of shortages in many sectors, including lumber industries as well. The pandemic spurred shortage has driven its prices too high. Demand of construction and the home remodeling during the pandemic coupled with coronavirus related limits on production caused the shortages that pushed the prices even higher.
However, after the pandemic, lumber prices fluctuated sharply in October 2020, by over 25 percent per week. This has been likely due to many factors, such as the typical seasonality in lumber demand (due to the end of construction season in some regions), increased processing capacity, and others. The price of lumber pallets increased considerably as sawmills were forced to close or slow production. However, prices still remained higher when compared with the same period in 2019.
IMPACT ON DEMAND
The demand for lumber material is disrupted due to the shutdown in every industries and construction & infrastructure. The effect of coronavirus declined the request for consumer, durable, and capital goods in many countries such as in the place like Brazil, Ghana, and Japan. Due to the ongoing outbreak of COVID-19, the global market of lumber pallet has been highly affected by the pandemic as many companies were operating in the field of lumber pallet. And they were obliged to stop their manufacturing process and production.
Though, this decreased demand can be restored to pre-pandemic levels by 2022, as about 100% of the wooden pallets can be recycled, including the nails, which can greatly increase the demand for lumber pallets.
On the other hand, after the second wave, wood prices typically fluctuate more than then most products, because homebuilding can move or down much faster sawmill capacity can. Wood products have other uses that more stable, such as non- residential construction, crates, and pallets, but new housing is largest usage.
IMPACT ON SUPPLY CHAIN
Throughout the history, global chain has been one of the most vulnerable parts of the trading process. The importance of supply chain can be understood by the fact that a number of wars took place in history for the smooth functioning of the supply chain across the globe. These challenges have been intensified by the impeded performance of badly sectors intricately linked to forests and lumber pallets, such as transportation, forest based recreation, and sectors that use wood as raw material, including construction and manufacturing.
Early in 2020, the lumber supply chain contracted for numerous reasons. For instance,
Housing starts declined precipitously, falling 22.3% in March, and the lumber industry anticipated low overall demand. Consequently, lumber mills idled or curtailed production, with the industry analytics firm Forisk estimating an overall reduction of softwood lumber capacity of over 15.6% in the first quarter of 2020 and curtailments continuing into April. However, housing starts rose in June and exceeded starts in 2019 through October. Demand for lumber for remodeling remained steady. As a result, lumber demand exceeded supply, leading to softwood lumber shortages and prices that rose to record high levels in late August and early September 2020.
Thus, the combination of stagnating production reduced demand shortages of raw material, lack of working, capital and forced many operations and enterprises to halt their activities and some permanently.
AFTERMATH OF COVID-19 AND GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE TO BOOST THE GLOBAL LUMBER PALLET MARKET
The rising popularity of lumber pallets has been an instrumental factor in influencing the growth of global lumber pallet market. The market conditions of lumber pallets are severely affected due to the pandemic related challenges and continue to face problems despite recent government measures. To boost the demands, the government has offered export incentives to the industries apart from extending operation hours for the businesses. The government has also imposed import duties on the raw materials that are required for manufacturing lumber pallets.
For instance,
To conduct proper importation of goods, necessary documentation and customs clearance procedures at importing country have to be completed accurately.
Regulatory framework and government support, such as government grants and funding programs offers investment subsidies and tax benefits which play a key role in driving the global lumber pallet market.
STRAGETIC DECISIONS FOR MANUFACTURERS AFTER COVID-19 TO GAIN COMPETITIVE MARKET SHARE
Although the COVID-19 pandemic continues to transform the growth of various industries, the immediate impact of the outbreak is varied. Despite the severe pandemic situation, the growing adoption of technology is propelling the manufacturers to produce wooden pallets equipped with sensors and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
During the pandemic situation, the pallet manufacturers have put in efforts to develop products that more closely resembles natural lumber. The pandemic has also pushed the manufacturers to adopt recycling of the wooden pallets and to transform it into high post recycled product which proves to be more sustainable. Manufacturers are still facing problems with supply chain disruptions and staffing crunches due to social distancing and other restrictions. These problems are overcome by using available materials and skills to redirect.
 For instance,
By increasing reusing activities of lumber pallets, there can be increase in number of pallets which provides flexibility. This can cause demand spikes and can help in determining the pallets which are best fit for their specific warehouses and storage systems.
Hence, the various strategic decisions taken by the government can prove to help increase the market share of lumber pallets. Strict checks of the pallets before distribution can ensure that the pallets are contamination-free and help to discard the damaged and low quality ones.
CONCLUSION
Pandemic has taken a toll on every aspect of life, including the global economy. With the significant downfalls in many sectors, a collaborative effort of government, industry players, and consumers can win the fight against COVID-19.
It still continues to inflict the world with appalling economic and social dilemmas, capable enough to leave severe backlash on the economy for the next several years. The first wave had already inflicted powerful blows to the population as well as the economy. The currently experiencing second wave is expected to be more disastrous not only to the masses but also to financial markets.
The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lumber pallet market in a serious manner. One of the restrictions brought by the pandemic was the closure of lumber pallets production. This cession of production will have a severe impact on the country’s GDP as well. Therefore, it is important to take decisions that will economically improve public admiration, and create favorable conditions for the activities of business entities in the lumber industries, and at the same time increase the level of preparedness for a crisis in the future.
Hence, due to appropriate and continuous government support, the manufacturers of lumber pallets are able to overcome the obstacles and increase their production in a fruitful manner.

Nielsen Jenkins, Mt Coot-Tha House
Mt Coot-Tha House by Nielsen Jenkins was completed for a family member of one of the architects, on an empty bushland block next to their shared childhood home in Brisbane.
Designed as a wedge that has lodged itself into the mountainside, the house wraps around a luscious green central courtyard, and provides both connection to and protection from the elements.
The project explores ideas of connection and refuge within a site characterised by its slope and extreme bushfire exposure.

Archier, Corner House
Presenting as a solid fibre cement-clad volume to the street, Corner House by Archier references the board and batten detail of typical fishing cottages in its Flinders, Victoria location.
An experimental floor plan is revealed inside, with living areas positioned in each corner of the dwelling, connected by stepped walkways acting as gallery spaces. This layout accommodates a set of new routines for the clients as they settle into retirement, supporting strategies of occupation where two people could live together with equal parts connection and freedom.
The house and landscape mediate the relationship between the occupants, with each corner volume acting as an independent space, but with large windows that promote a visual connection between areas. The courtyard plays a crucial role in this gesture, filtering and softening views across the project.

Being a beach house where extended family and friends often gather, spaces have been designed to facilitate collective experiences: kids bunkering together; an open washroom that doubles as a mud room; multiple entry points into the house; and different indoor and outdoor living areas.

Rob Kennon Architects, Elwood Bungalow
This Elwood, Victoria project by Rob Kennon Architects relies on the idea of subtracting space as much as adding it.
Occupying the former land of a rear garden, the renovation embodies a desire to turn away from the neighbouring walls, in favour of an inward dial plan that axially and infinitely looks onto itself.
The ‘addition’, a low-lying single-storey extension, builds square up-to all three rear boundaries and subtracts a circle garden out from the middle. The resulting form visually and functionally aligns with the family’s values of openness and connectedness.

Studio Bright, 8 Yard House
Rather than a traditional house with a singular backyard, 8 Yard House by Studio Bright is distributed along the length of its North Fitzroy site, punctuated with a series of variously sized outdoor courtyards.
Across the whole site are eight outdoor spaces, the largest between the studio, garage and the main volume of the house. A central located pool becomes another landscape area either to use or look out across.
Overall, the architectural form is defined by an almost monumental brick construction detailed with perforations, rhythmic built-in columns and planter boxes.

Furminger, River House
Furminger have repurposed an existing weatherboard Brisbane home through minimal intervention.
A primitive architectural intention was used to establish building and landscape through the metaphor of a ruin. The site was conceived as a large garden to hold program for daily activities. Heavy masonry walls intersect the site, carving out public and private courtyard gardens, creating new entries into rooms through garden spaces.
A strategy was developed to use concrete as cheaply as possible, using what many would consider commercial or industrial construction techniques. The entire structure was constructed from tilt up concrete panels, which were poured and stacked on site.

Benn & Penna Architecture, Henley Clays
Henley Clays by Benn & Penna involves alterations and additions to a freestanding brick cottage in Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Additions are framed upon a heavy brick plinth that extends the sandstone base of the existing cottage, forming a series of landscape-inspired rooms that gently ascend through the home.
The material quality of the spaces is robust and earthy, with brickwork used throughout floors and walls. The mortar colour has been matched to the brickwork to amplify the monolithic and landscape like qualities of the project, while openings have been carefully arranged to puncture the building’s mass and wash its cave-like spaces with natural light.
Throughout the houses are gradually occurring level changes, encouraging the dweller to meander through the space. Steps between each level are used to demarcate the spaces, making them feel both intimate, while connected to the rest of the house.

Anthrosite, Hamilton Courtyard
This Newcastle project by Anthrosite presented the rare opportunity of converting two detached houses into one home. Instead of being pressured into market norms of maximising floor space, the clients were more concerned with creating a series of family spaces that felt connected to one another.
The result is a celebration of the courtyard; a generous central area that unites the wings of the house and promotes visibility, allowing the occupants to remain connected to each other even while engaged in individual tasks.
The importance of the courtyard’s role in the house is duly acknowledged with the main entry. An intimately scaled passage leads off the street, opening out not into the home but onto the private and calming courtyard garden.

Blair Smith Architecture, Brunswick Lean-To
This addition to a heritage listed cottage in Brunswick, Melbourne by Blair Smith Architecture showcases how homes can be enriched through modest architectural intervention.
The circa 1900 double-fronted cottage now sits alongside a new 51 square metre addition, achieving a high level of detail and finish, within a limited budget. This new building takes formal and programmatic cues from the dilapidated lean-to structure it replaces, while overcoming its shortcomings: a lack of aspect, awkward layout, and poor thermal performance.
The northern facade is divided into 11 modules characterised by three sliding timber screens on a single track. These screens have numerous purposes; they control heat gain, glare and offer an increased level of privacy to surrounding development.

Studio Prineas, Bona Vista
Bona Vista in Sydney’s inner-west reinterprets the characterful features of its Federation frontage, forging a warm domestic setting for family life.
In line with heritage guidelines, the council was highly prescriptive of the building envelope, forms and materials of the new addition. The architecture embraces the hip roof profile, while introducing an unconventional internal ceiling line; a surprising and memorable volume articulated by partially obscured skylights filtering natural light.
Studio Prineas have drawn a level change that once separated house and garden into the interior, forging a distinction between the old and new architecture, and connecting the new addition to the landscape.

Edition Office, Kyneton House
A refined palette of gracefully ageing, tactile materials defines this country house by Edition Office in Kyneton, Victoria.
The greatest inspiration for the project came from the client’s ambition to capture the passing of time through curated views of the garden, and white ceiling volumes that pick up the fluctuating levels of natural daylight.
The home’s deepened position within the site allows its relatively simple brick form to avoid feeling dominated by the garden, but instead wrapped and softly enveloped by it.

Fox Johnston, SRG House
This 1970s heritage-listed house originally owned by Sir Roy Grounds in Balmain, NSW has been reengineered for contemporary family life by Fox Johnston.
Keeping within the building footprint, Fox Johnston have carved extra space and forged stronger connections to landscape and place, while maintaining the integrity of the original structure and material language.
Interventions focused on restoring the superstructure; better connecting the home to the landscape; converting lower-ground space (previously housing an air-conditioning plant) into two bedrooms; replacing the ‘80s garage with a new structure and apartment for multigenerational living; and softening the geometry of the original grid design.

FMD Architects, Coopworth
Coopworth by FMD Architects is a contemporary interpretation of a country farmhouse nestled in the rural surrounds of Bruny Island, Tasmania.
The property’s sheep, wide-ranging views to the water and mountain ranges beyond, and weathering shacks dotted over the island, provide an ever-changing landscape with which the house converses.
The resulting footprint of the house is consciously constrained to maximise arable land, but with generous interiors facilitated by various gabled, hipped and skillion rooflines. Simple plywood linings and concrete floors draw focus to this ceiling, which features wool sourced from the property, adding to its thermal performance.

Nic Brunsdon, East Fremantle House
East Fremantle House by Nic Brunsdon is a contextually responsive addition to a heritage cottage.
Most important to the project is the space that’s not built – a large northern void – a space for light, sound, and breeze to inhabit. The house traces the void’s edge, providing constant connections to nature.
Once a dark period home with ‘60s additions and asbestos sheds at the rear, the home is now arranged as four interconnected sections: the existing brick cottage, an entry link, a ground floor addition, and first floor addition.
The living room is a ‘garden room’ lined with sliding north-facing doors, allowing the space to cleverly spill outdoors and occupy the full width of the site.

Wowowa, Pony
Pony is an agile alteration and modest addition to a 1960s apricot brick home in Brighton East, Victoria.
Wowowa devised a reworking of the original home, alongside an agile new extension. This extension adopts a simple, linear form that slides against the existing volume to run lengthways down the block. The focal point of this new structure or ‘colonnade’ is the roof, which takes design cues from the nearby beach to feature cladding and construction methodology akin to a boat with a keel, bow and stern.
A dessert-inspired interior colour palette draws on the client’s mid-century furniture, and allows a smiling eye to whimsically dance around the home.

Wiesebrock Architecture, Bellbrae House
The brief of this Bellbrae, Victoria home called for sustainable design measures and a flexible floor plan suitable for regular guests.
Two pavilions were created by Wiesebrock Architecture in response, comprising the primary house and a guest pavilion. In between the two pavilions is a large outdoor deck covered with polycarbonate roofing.
Aesthetically, the new house draws on the couple and architect’s love of old farm sheds. Durable, low-maintenance, corrugated and galvanised steel sheeting features on the exterior, while the warm interior references classic shearing sheds.

Curious Practice, Lambton House
The small 55 square metre footprint of this new, suburban four-bedroom home by Curious Practice maximises landscaped areas on its Newcastle, NSW site.
Carefully considering the unique five-way intersection of mixed residential and commercial buildings it addresses, the house performs simple gestures to maximise its relationship to context, both neighbouring and public.
A step-down in level from entry to living areas creates a seat at garden level and combined with a generous window injects light and air, while engaging with passersby. This public gesture is continued through an extension of the green streetscape through fences and canopies designed for verdant consumption of the building over time.

Austin Maynard Architects, Garden House
By nature of its inner-city Melbourne location and by design, Garden House by Austin Maynard Architects belies its size and scale.
At street-view, the shingled, simple and domestic scale garage appears to be the house in its entirety. Walk down the side pedestrian alleyway however, and the main front door opens up to reveal a much bigger property, comprising four distinct elements appearing as separate buildings. These buildings are ‘invisibly’ connected via mirrored glass corridors, reflective of the property’s well-established garden.
This high-performing, high-tech, inner-city Melbourne oasis produces 100kwh per day and has a 26kwh Tesla battery.
The Design Files + Laminex Design Awards 2021 Residential Architecture award is presented by COLORBOND® steel.
COLORBOND® steel is one of Australia’s most loved building products, producing coated steel products for more than 50 years. Their coating technology offers exceptional performance with resistance to chipping and cracking, creating highly durable roof and wall cladding materials.
