Speaking only from Washington state, USA (Pacific Northwest for nonUSians) here but from a lot of experience in forestry. This has been an issue long long before Etsy. It is complex. Federal and state land is here to provide resources for harvesting with the exception of Parks.
Salal, big leaf maple, western red cedar, bear grass, Christmas tree boughs, and many others are all examples of the legal and illegal economy here. It is a large driver in coastal WA that has a huge economic inequality gap.
Salal harvesting, widely done by immigrants from Guatemala or Honduras, involves driving a van of said immigrants to federal, state, or private timberland and dropping them off in the woods then coming to pick them up 8-12 hours later. If you hear screaming and whistling in the woods, it’s the brush pickers talking to each other. Likewise, clothes tied up on branches is commonly a signal for the pickup spot. The export for Salal in terms of $$$ is debated but probably equivalent to WA’s apple export. Frequently, brush pickers overharvest and illegallly harvest. They are paid $0.60 per bundle of salal and you buy it for like $3 in Safeway.
Cedar poaching is big money. The copper wire of the woods. Cedar trees are most likely going to become endangered as climate change progresses. Poachers range from camouflaged helicopters lifting old cedar trees out of rivers to people on a lot of meth cutting out old bridges to people stripping wood for baskets. People trying to chainsaw apart trail features made of cedar is common. I have seen “naturally fallen” cedar planks being sold but most cedar ends up being made into shingles for roofs. (Cedar shakers or shake rats have a rich timber history of their own). This is an important money maker for at least one Indian Tribe in the area but a significant amount of cedar harvesting done is illegal across the board.
Occasionally big leaf maple has a grain pattern that makes it ideal for guitars. There is big money in this. Big leaf maple is not a timber product and you can pay private timber to harvest it. Travel any public land along a waterway and look at the backs of maple trees. There will be strips of bark peeled, checking for what trees can be poached.
Once, sitting in a forest service office on the Pacific coast, we explained cedar poaching to a work crew from Seattle. They were appalled and asked why people aren’t arrested for this. Why isn’t something done. My old boss, who worked in the woods for 30 years, told them why they should be sad about this when they lived in a city built on the corpse of a mountain.
On a side note: the Native American Indian Tribe I currently work for doesn’t not like Robin Wall Kimmerer because sweet grass is rare, hard to grow, and patches on public land are limited. I have seen people use Braiding Sweetgrass as justification for harvesting it. Head boss talked about how she should not have written about practices involving sweetgrass because it directly threatens the resources and livelihood of a Tribe across the continent from her. This is not the viewpoint of every tribe of every tribal member, only one that I’ve talked about with members at work and not seen often repeated.
Some articles on poaching for those interested:
The book Pineros: Latino Labour and the Changing Face of Forestry in the Pacific Northwest by Brinda Sarathy is also good for those interested. While most poaching is done by either Latin Americans or illegal immigrants, they are a huge part of the forest products industry as a whole.
Oh my god I'm sooooo mad right now
So. I have no business telling people not to collect wild plants/materials.
I do it all the time.
However.
The words "wildcrafted," and "foraged," even "sustainably harvested," are terrifying to see in an ad on Etsy or Instagram
There is a such thing as the honorable harvest where you ASK the plant if it is okay to take, with the intention of listening if the answer is NO. Robin Wall Kimmerer talked about this, She did not make it up, it is an ancient and basic guideline of treating the plants with respect.
Basically it is not wrong to use plants and other living things, even if this means taking their life. But you are not the main character. You have to reflect on your knowledge of the organism's life cycle and its role in the ecosystem, so you can know you are not damaging the ecosystem. You have to only take what you need and avoid depleting the population.
Mary Siisip Geniusz also talked about it in an enlightening way in her book Plants Have So Much to Give Us, All We Have To Do is Ask. She gave an example of a woman who was on an island and needed to use a medicinal herb to heal her injured leg or she would not survive the winter. In that situation she had to use up all of the plant that was on the island. This was permissible, even though it eliminated the local population, because she had to do it to save her life. But in return the woman had the responsibility to later return to the island and plant seeds of that plant.
And what makes me absolutely furious, is that there are a bunch of people online who have vaguely copied this philosophy of sustainability in a false and insulting way, saying "wildcrafted" or "foraged" materials to be all trendy and cool and in touch with nature, when it is actually just poaching.
If you are from a capitalistic culture the honorable harvest is very hard and unintuitive to learn to practice. I am not very good at it still. This is why it is suspicious if someone is confident that they can ethically and respectfully harvest wild materials with money involved.
So there's this lichen that is often called "reindeer moss." It looks like this:
It grows only a few millimeters a year.
This is "preserved" reindeer moss.
It is from Etsy, similar is also sold in many other online shops, many of which have the audacity to describe it as a "plant" for decorations and terrariums that needs no maintenance.
It is not maintenance-free, it is dead. It has been spray-painted a horrible shade of green. The people buying it clearly don't even know what it is. It is a popular crafting material for "fairy houses," whatever the hell those are. So is moss, also dead, spray-painted, and wild-harvested. Supposedly reindeer moss is harvested sustainably in Finland, where it is abundant, for the craft industry. However poaching of lichens and mosses is absolutely rampant.
It's even more upsetting because there's hardly any articles drawing attention to the problem. This one is from 1999. And the poaching is still going on.
There is a "moss" section on Etsy, and it is so upsetting
These mosses and lichens were collected from the wild. Most of the shops are in the Pacific Northwest or Appalachia, which are the major locations of moss and lichen poaching. There are some shops based in Appalachia selling "foraged" reindeer moss.
Reindeer moss may be abundant in Finland, but in Appalachia it should NOT be harvested to be sold on Etsy as craft supplies! Moss doesn't grow quickly. Big, healthy colonies like this took years to grow. Some of these shops have thousands of sales, all of bags and bags of moss and lichen, and thinking of how much moss and lichen that must be, I am filled with horror.
Clubmosses do not transplant well, and these ones have no roots. The buyers do not realize they have bought a dead plant because clubmoss stays green and pliable after it is dead.
This is especially awful because in Mary Siisip Geniusz's book she talked about clubmosses being poached so much for Christmas wreaths that they had almost disappeared from a lot of forests.
I don't even know if this is illegal if it's not a formally endangered species so I don't know if I can report them I'm just. really sad and angry

Flatbed Trucking: Everything You Need to Know
You only think of trucks when you see them on the road unless you're a truck driver. Or when you're traveling on the highway and must choose between the 'cars only' and 'cars and trucks' lanes. Trucks, particularly flatbed trucks, play an important role in moving products and are critical to keeping the economy running.
This site will provide you with useful information on flatbed trucks. We will also talk about the top trucking companies in Oklahoma. So, continue reading this enlightening essay to the finish.
What is a Flatbed Truck?
A flatbed truck is a type of truck with distinctive bodywork, consisting of a flat 'bed' with no sides or roof, unlike a conventional bed in pickup trucks. This distinguishing trait provides various advantages to truckers in the transportation and logistics industries.
Common Uses of Flatbed Trucks
Flatbed trucks are often used to deliver construction supplies ranging from timber and bricks to scaffolding and steel beams. Tractors, backhoes, and other heavy machinery are transported. Hauling baled tires from one location to another Flatbed trucks are also used to move scrap away from working sites, transporting it to a recycling facility and providing construction personnel more area to work. Landscapers commonly utilize this type of vehicle to haul bigger trees, landscaping tools, and bulk bags of landscaping products.
Benefits of Flatbed Trucking
Because there are no physical barriers, flatbed shipment allows for some dimensional freedom for huge freight.
Flatbed trucks, unlike dry van trailers, can be loaded from either side, as well as the top and back of the big trucking companies In the USA. Step decks, twin drops, and RGNs are examples of flatbed equipment.
Flatbed Trucking Tips
Know your freight- Before scheduling a flatbed cargo, make sure you understand all of the specifics of your shipment, such as the goods being carried, the value, dimensions, and weight. If your flatbed package is unusually shaped or heavy, securing, loading, and unloading it may be more physically demanding. This is especially important if your cargo exceeds the flatbed trailer's length, height, or weight constraints.
Recognize the trailers- Before booking a shipment, familiarise yourself with the equipment to make the most cost-effective and safe decisions. Extended trailers and Conestogas might be difficult to locate, and your freight service provider may request early notification if they are needed.
Consider dealing with a specialist who can assist you with securing capacity and locating the equipment required to move your freight. It will undoubtedly make shipping easier for you.
Interesting Facts on Flatbed Trucking
✔️ Weather affects flatbed shipping.
✔️ There are more than 14 different types of flatbed trailers.
✔️When transporting with a flatbed trailer, cargo security is complicated.
✔️Flatbed transportation is most commonly used for over-dimensional freight.
Where Can You Find The Flatbed Trucking Company in the USA?
Though there are several online and offline channels through which, you can obtain flatbed trucking services. Stevens Trucking Company OKC is one of my favorites at the top of the list. It is one of the best trucking companies in Oklahoma, specializing in flatbeds, gin trucks, winch trucks, and forklifts.

How Threatening Is A Termite Infestation?
Termites are a common pest in homes all over USA. These pests can cause major structural damage to your home, and they often go undetected until it is too late. However, with the help of a timber pest inspection in Lake Mary or elsewhere, you can protect your home from termites and other pests that may be lurking inside.
Termites come from a family of social insects known as Isoptera. They are found all over the world in every type of climate from hot and dry to cool and wet. Termites can be identified by their long antennae, which they use for locating food sources that are up to 60 meters away; their narrow waist, which helps them to bore through wood with ease; a soft-ridged abdomen protecting its delicate gut region; six little pairs of legs on each side of its body, two mandibles at either end used for chewing and four wings helping it fly off into the air if danger approaches
Termites feed on wood by chewing through it using their strong jaws. They will eat anything made out of wood including furniture, decks, fences, and even houses! The different types of termites found in USA include:
Subterranean Termites - These are the most destructive type as they live underground and spend only about 20% of their time above ground;
Drywood Termites - These don't require any contact with water to survive and are the most common type of termite found in USA;
Dampwood Termites - These live inside wood that is constantly wet for a long period, such as hollow trees. They never actually eat through the wood themselves but instead feed on fungus growing within it;
Timber Termite Infestation - Timber pests will infest your home if you don't have regular pest inspections carried out by an expert. These are insects which include ants, beetles, and moths.
It is not always easy to identify a termite infestation, which is why a timber pest inspection or a home inspection in Sydney where they check for such pests is a vital step in the process. Pest inspectors will be able to identify tell-tale signs of an infestation, such as damaged wood and damage on or around windowsills, doors, and roofs. Mud tubes built by subterranean termites along foundation walls near ground level and termite swarms during mating season are also clues that indicate an infestation. So, if you see swarms of flying ants around your home then they may be looking for mates which indicates possible activity inside your house.
Pests are often found near termite nests so they can forage nearby when the food sources in their nest run out. They may also come from outdoor items brought into homes that have been affected by pests outside
So, how do you prevent a termite infestation in your home?
You can easily prevent a termite infestation in your home by following these steps:
· Inspect any furniture you buy before bringing it into the house.
· Ensure there are no cracks or gaps where water can enter and cause damage, such as around windows, doors, and rooflines.
· Trim trees away from the house to reduce moisture content.
· Make sure gutters are draining properly.
· Install metal flashing on chimneys that meet with a masonry wall because this is one of the most common areas for pests to gain access through when constructing their nests inside cavities - so long as they have not been treated correctly (with cement). If possible, install a brick liner instead-but if you cannot then make sure the mortar joints between bricks are tight enough to prevent pests from entering in.
· Install mesh screens over vents to prevent wasps and bees from entering. This is particularly important in the summer when these insects are more active.
· Remove any bird nests or other debris that can accumulate on outside eaves, rooflines, and gutters because this provides egg-laying sites for pests.
How do you get rid of termites if you already have them in your home?
If you find that you have termites in your home through a timber pest inspection or a home inspection in Lake Mary, Florida, then the best way to get rid of them is by calling a pest controller. Termites are not easy to get rid of yourself, they destroy the building materials and framing members of your home or business in order to reach food sources that may be too far away for them to access on their own.
A regular timber pest inspection can help you catch potential signs of a problem before it becomes too costly and destructive. If you don't have an annual timber pest inspection, then this is where to start looking for the tell-tale signs that termites are in your home or business.

Lophodytes cucullatus, L. floridanus
By U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, in the Public Domain
PLEASE SUPPORT US ON PATREON. EACH and EVERY DONATION helps to keep this blog running! Any amount, even ONE DOLLAR is APPRECIATED! IF YOU ENJOY THIS CONTENT, please CONSIDER DONATING!
Name: Lophodytes cucullatus, L. floridanus
Status: Extant
First Described: 1853
Described By: Reichenbach
Classification: Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria, Tyrannoraptora, Maniraptoriformes, Maniraptora, Pennaraptora, Paraves, Eumaniraptora, Averaptora, Avialae, Euavialae, Avebrevicauda, Pygostylia, Ornithothoraces, Euornithes, Ornithuromorpha, Ornithurae, Neornithes, Neognathae, Galloanserae, Anseriformes, Anseres, Anatoidea, Anatidae
Today’s dinosaur is Lophodytes - the Hooded Merganser! This bird has such a wonderful crest in the males of the species that it is one of my absolute favorite species of ducks. It is, today, monospecific (meaning, only one species in the genus), but in the Pleistocene there appears to have been a second species in Florida, named L. floridanus. Sadly, very little is known about this species, including what hits relationship to the Hooded Merganser even is, so that’s about as much as I can say on that score.
By USFWS Midwest, in the Public Domain
The Hooded Merganser is the second smallest species of merganswer, with the smew from Asia being smaller, and it’s the only merganser restricted to North America. They spend the breeding season in Northern USA and southern Canada; the winter along the coasts and in the south; and they can be found year-round in the Pacific Northwest and Eastern United States. They are not currently threatened with extinction, and they are fairly common and well known birds from throughout North America. They live in ponds, lakes, and rivers, sticking to freshwater where they can feed on fish, aquatic insects, and other invertebrates. It hunts with sight under the water, diving for its food.
By Russ, CC BY 2.0
Despite not being threatened with extinction at this time, the are threatened by large amounts of deforestation, as they nest in cavities in mature trees, and so the destruction of old growth forests through logging and other timber management has lead to hits on the population. Luckily, the Hooded Merganser also use nesting boxes, so between habitat conservation and human efforts, it’s doing okay. These birds are distinctive and sexually dimorphic, with the females mottled brown and brown crested; and the males distinctively white and black striped, with bright white crests. They have very long, narrow bills, and distinctive eyes, continuing to make them visually striking birds.
By Don Faulkner, CC BY-SA 2.0
The Hooded Merganser makes seasonal monogamous pairs, remaining together until the female has prepared her nest and laid her clutch. At that point the male leaves, and the female cares for her chicks on her own. They prefer nesting at least four feet off the ground, even as high as fifteen feet. They breed between February and June, and lay between 7 and 15 eggs. They start the incubation after the last egg is laid, and this allows the young to be about the same size, leading to efficient parental care. The young leave the nest a day after hatching, and they can dive and forage on their own, but they stay with their mom for protection until they are older.

Environmental Health & Safety Facility, CA
Designed by The Miller Hull Partnership, the new Environmental Health & Safety Facility on the University of California, Santa Cruz campus manages hazardous waste generated by teaching, research, and campus maintenance activities. The original facility, constructed in 1982, was in compliance with the code in effect at the time but would not meet today’s new requirements. The facility also lacked the space needed to accommodate a projected increase in waste generated by campus growth in instruction and research programs.
The new facility includes laboratories, waste handling facilities, temporary storage, administrative offices, and support space to allow the unit to better respond to the increased requirements for hazardous material handling and other critical life, health, and safety services.
The site includes a small knoll and is defined by the steep ravine and mature redwood trees, which led to siting the building at the edge of the knoll to prioritize mature redwood stands and efficient vehicle movement within a minimal clearing. The building is constructed on caissons to be light on the land and allow natural drainage and existing root systems to remain below the building. All stormwater is managed on-site with direct infiltration, and a below-grade storm drain detention structure with outfall to level spreaders distributed across the site.
In order to capitalize on the mild climate of the northern California coast, the building employs an indoor/outdoor secure circulation hallway with cover overhead and a redwood timber horizontal screen wall at the building perimeter.
This open-air hallway separates hazardous areas of the building and utilizes natural air movement through the redwood timber screen to provide make-up air for normal and emergency exhaust operations, thereby greatly reducing energy consumption and the size of the rooftop air handling unit.
High windows, just below the roofline, provide daylight to storage and material handling rooms with solid walls for storage functions to a practical height. The daylight reduces the reliance on artificial light and provides increased safety in high-hazard spaces.
Designed to be light on the land and blend with the natural landscape, the new facility will help ensure the University continues to comply with state and federal regulations and support the future waste generated by the growing campus.

Tubular Chipboard
TUBULAR CHIPBOARD (HOLLOW CHIPBOARD)
We are leading manufacturer company of tubular chipboard (hollow chipboard). Our factory is located in Turkey. Our indoor plant is 12,500 sqm and outdoor plant is 280,000 sqm. We have modern machines and equipments with skilled workers. Our team is in wood sector more than 50 years. We have good experience about solid wooden doors, solid furnitures, HDF moulded wooden interior doors, tubular chipboard sheets, fire rated doors, tubular chipboard doors.
SOLID CHIPBOARD (PARTICLE BOARD) SUPPLIERS
We are Solid Chipboard Sheets manufacturer and exporter company. We are one of the biggest tubular chipboard sheets suppliers in Turkey. We have different sizes and thicknesses of melamine faced chipboard. Please feel free to contact with us for more details.
FEATURES OF TUBULAR CHIPBOARD
We can manufacture tubular chipboard the sizes a below
Thickness: 33mm, 35mm, 38mm Width : 1250mm ( width is stable and can not change) Length/Height: Between 2000mm to 2150mm (or customers special size) Quality : E1 Grade Quantity : 40hq container can take around 54m3 to 59m3 depending on sizes. Weight : About 420 kg/m3
FEATURES OF HOLLOW CHIPBOARD
Hollow Core Board is a kind of chipboard which has tube holes inside horizontally manufactured. During production of hollow core particle board, we glued very small wood pieces and pressed with high pressure and hot weather. Hollow wood boards are about 50-60% lighter than solid wood timbers. Lighter chipboard sheets are easily cut, process, install and use. The cost of hollow core chipboard is lower than solid wood. So customer prefers to use hollow particle chipboard sheets.
We are using tubular particle board sheets for manufacturing wooden interior doors, for separating rooms, walls and floors, and decorations. As a result tubular particle board sheets are using for isolating sound and heat.
Decoration companies uses tubular particle board sheets for arranging rooms, separating rooms and for floors. Besides, veneered chipboard sheets are isolating sound and decrease consumption of energy for heating and cooling. So, laminated chipboard sheets are very strong and can protect itself against any hazard for long time. It is easily paint with any colors. An other type of chipboard is melamine covered and veneered chipboard.
Our tubular board products are of high quality and a competitive price. Our factory is also manufacturing fire rated doors and tubular wooden doors. Of course, we export tubular chipboard core products to UK, Ireland, Bulgaria, United Arab Emirates and some African countries. Our price is always competitive with world market prices and products has high quality to prefer.
How Do We Manufacture Professional Tubular Chipboards
Particleboard is easier to use, lighter and cheaper in cost than wooden products. Particleboard is produced by producing wood particles together with the adhesive under high temperature and high pressure. Because traditional wood is derived from trees, the width of the trees does not go beyond a certain length. For this reason, wooden boards were obtained by gluing wide but tall wood side by side to create wooden boards. Doors, tables and cabinets produced in the past were obtained by this method. However, in particle board products, we can use a very large one-piece board in terms of both width and length. This provides us with ease of use.
Hollow core door manufacturers buy our tubular board and use in hollow core interior doors. Tubular core doors are good for silence and fire retardant. Hollow wood boards are another kind of particle board.
What Kind of Particle Boards We Have In The Market
Particle boards are denser than traditional wood. Despite this, it is the lightest and weakest type of chipboard except insulation board. There are many different densities of chipboard. Although MDF is medium density fiberboard, HDF is sold in the market as high density fiberboard.
A major disadvantage of particle board is its susceptibility to expansion and discoloration from moisture absorption, especially when not coated with paint or other sealant. Therefore, people do not use much it.
In the 19th, plywood was invente as an alternative to natural wood. Plywood is made from thin solid wood veneers that are glued together with an adhesive. However, by the late 1940s, there was a shortage of lumber available to produce plywood economically.
We produce particleboard also known as chipboard from waste materials such as planing shavings, cuts or sawdust, and mechanically produced wood chips. We glued the chips together and then squeezed into a large board shape under heat. Then we dried them and cut into various sizes for sale.
How Is Particle Board Manufacture In Factories?
Particleboard is a kind of wood board. It produced with compressed wood particles.
First, they strippe the logs. Then cut the logs to a certain width and length. Then they sent these cutted timbers to the chipper. The chipper cuts the lumber into very small pieces of wood.
How Does Wooden Chips Drying?
They are drying wood chips to facilitate gluing and hot pressing. The dryer reduces the moisture content of wooden chips up to 2.5%. The core and surface chips can be dried to slightly different moisture contents. An alternative to rotary dryers is fast drying, which requires slightly lower drying temperatures.
Dry chips are mixed with a synthetic resin and other suitable additives such as hardener or wax emulsion. Care should be taken when proportioning glue and chips. Surface chips may show different glue requirements depending on the variety of wood. Special requirements can be added at this stage, such as fungal or flame retardant treatments. The type of glue used can also determine properties such as moisture resistance.
They place the glued chips in presses. And kept for a while under high temperature and high pressure. When the process is over, the take the products out of the press and left to cool. After cooling, they cut each panel and then sanded to the desired thickness, resulting in a smoother surface.
As mentioned above, there are many variations and modifications at chipboards. It can be applied to improve its properties such as moisture resistance, fire retardant or acoustic insulation.
In Where Do We Use Particle Boards
Market often use standard particleboard in furniture and interior door applications. As it is not suitable for areas prone to wetting or high humidity and is more cost effective than solid wood.
Chipboard can be purchased bare or covered with thin veneer sheets or plastic laminate. While solid wood furniture is considered to be more attractive, while these materials can mimic the look of real wood, they are marginally less costly, so they can be a good alternative option when purchasing furniture on a budget.
Construction And Particleboard Relationship In The Market
When it comes to construction, particleboard is suitable for interior projects such as installing cabinet door hinges or interior wooden doors on the sides of frameless cabinets. Particleboard has the ability to hold screws in place. While other materials such as plywood can shed the pulleys when excessive weight is apply to the hinges.
However, to connect two pieces of particleboard, a regular screw won’t simply cut through – you’ll need to use adhesives, fasteners, or specially designed screws to hold the particleboards together.
Compared to plywood or solid wood, particleboard is less forgiving during the installation process.
KOLCAM AGAC company is our factory name. KOLCAM AGAC is our brand name. KOLCAM AGAC tubular chipboard factory is the biggest tubular chipboard factory in Turkey. KOLCAM AGAC hollow particle board factory is best hollow core chipboard factory in Turkey.

Chelsea And Westminster Hospital Sky Garden in London
Sky Garden Designed By Jinny Blom To Support Physical And Psychological Needs Of Intensive Care Patients
6th September 2021, London. Today, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and its charity CW+ have unveiled a new indoor botanical Sky Garden at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, designed by award-winning landscape designer and CW+ Artist in Residence, Jinny Blom. The Sky Garden will bring the outdoors inside, supporting the cognitive function, wellbeing, and rehabilitation of patients in intensive care.
CW+ aims to improve the patient environment and experience in the hospital, and research has shown that incorporating elements of nature into healthcare environments can improve healing. The Sky Garden is part of the redevelopment and expansion of the recently opened Adult Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on the top floor of the hospital, and has been installed adjacent to the ICU, with Jinny creating a transformative experience for both patients and staff, where they can escape into nature and feel transported away from the clinical environment.
Jinny, who was appointed by CW+ to design the garden, is a former Psychologist and Psychotherapist, and knows only too well the benefits of biophilia (meaning ‘love of nature’) in healthcare and the impact of nature, plants and landscapes on patient recovery and wellness. Developed through consultation and design workshops with former patients and ICU staff, Jinny’s idea was to create a space with multiple zones responding to the many differing needs of the ICU. As a result, one side of the garden is more active with a physiotherapy ramp for recovering patients, but there is also a sociable space for conversations or just some peace and quiet.
With first-hand experience of working in a stressful NHS environment, Jinny has also incorporated sleep pods, which were funded by NHS Charities Together, and are in a quiet corner of the garden for medical staff who need to work long hours caring for patients with complex needs. There is also a quiet zone where a patient can be brought on their bed and spend precious private time with their family.
The design of the garden takes its cue from Modernist architecture. The garden is very low toxin in its makeup as it is principally timber. Furniture has been designed with a calming colour palette and uses soft-to-touch yet hard-wearing lino, another natural product made of flax. Abundant planting ameliorates the air and sound quality within the garden. The tree canopy will shade the garden from its bright natural light, and the plants within the garden have been chosen for their suitability to this demanding environment and will be cared for organically, without chemicals or pesticides.
Jinny Blom, who also created a Greenhaven Garden at the rear of the hospital several years ago, says: “Gardens, quite simply, improve our lives. To go and sit amongst plants and nature, especially in the context of a bustling hospital, has an immediate positive impact on stress levels. The Sky Garden will provide an irreplaceable source of respite to those in need”.
Trystan Hawkins, Director of Patient Environment at CW+, says: “We are thrilled with the Sky Garden which Jinny has so carefully designed. There is a wealth of research which demonstrates how natural environments have a real impact on patient’s wellbeing, recovery and mood. Many of our patients, especially in ICU, are unable to leave the hospital, often for prolonged lengths of time, so having this space of tranquillity and nature will be invaluable”.
The new, world-class adult and neonatal intensive care units which opened last month at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital provide unique patient-centred care, and the latest innovations and digital solutions to improve patient experience and recovery.
Lesley Watts, Chief Executive of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, says: “We are delighted to open the Sky Garden which will be a welcome green space to so many patients, and being located outside our new state-of-the-art ICU, will complement our patient-led approach to care in the unit. We are very grateful for the generous donations from patients and our supporters. Their unfailing kindness, support and interest that they have shown led to the creation and funding of this marvellous indoor garden, which will provide a therapeutic and relaxing space for our patients and staff.”
CW+ works throughout the hospital, transforming and improving the patient environment and experience. The Sky Garden is one of only two green spaces in the UK designed specifically to incorporate the physical and psychological needs of intensive care patients and their families.

No!!!!! Any modern and properly licensed operation follows catalogues of rules preventing environmental impact. These include preventing erosion, runoff, removing branches and brush for fire prevention, leaving snags for wildlife, leaving good stock for rebuilding the seed bank, and otherwise rebuilding the forest. It is in their best interest bit to clear cut cause they can no longer harvest there. The only time people clear cut is for buildings and farms. You have to have an environmental impact study before anything can even begin. The money generated from bids to log public land and the licensing fees are one of the very few sources of income for your public lands. The money goes to persevering them!!! A properly managed cut helps the forest like properly managed hunting helps animal populations. And tree spikes are dangerous to both the tree allowing infection and more importantly to people. You could seriously hurt someone. You could kill someone. Differential pressure can cause a spike to shoot out when cut or equipment to kickback. And "oh mark them and put it in an email" do you know who's cutting? When? If the warning will get to the workers in time through bureaucracy? Do you even know how the marking system works in forestry? You may in fact make a mark that is interpratated as a directive to cut that tree. And someone could get hurt or equipment damaged and then no one gets paid and they can't feed their family. Learn how the systems actually work before declaring the them evil. People properly managing a forest for timber means the forest stays around since it's worthwhile, otherwise someone would sell it and make a strip mall. It helps support the forest service/DEC and helps the forest stay healthy mimicking normal and natural cycles like fire in the western USA. (Also I have a degree in environmental biology from SUNY college of environmental science and forestry, with a focus on botany. I am qualified and knowledgeable on this subject)
Fun fact, hammering metal spikes into tree trunks is a federal crime in the US because environmental activists used to do it in the 80s to fuck up chainsaws and logging equipment.

Summary of chapter2 / Building School
Nature, ecology and environmental design
In this chapter, it talks about how to “touch the earth lightly” based on eco-thinking and how important to use environmental sensitive design in the school to rise the awareness of the shared world we rely on. In addition to learn from the nature, it is also fundamental to learn from the built environment.
Connect to the natural surroundings
- Forest school
The Forest School movement holds fast to the belief that children need to be in touch with their natural surroundings to grow up as balanced human beings, to become responsible citizens and to foster our natural environment. Preschool children used the woods as their classroom and the surroundings as their toys. The Forest School approach asserts that anything one can do in a classroom can also be done outside in a forest. Although the benefit of learning from nature directly, the deliberate lack of paper trail and bureaucracy is in stark contrast to the controlled curriculum-based education in other countries. Furthermore, children don’t have access to hot food and flushing toilets also can’t be accept by authorities. Therefore, a range of schools around the world strike a balance between learning in the woods and traditional classrooms, linking natural surroundings with built learning environments and the curriculum.
- With built learning environment
In this case KINGOSKOLEN IN SLANGERUP, DENMARK, The timber structure uses less energy to make, compared to a steel frame or masonry construction, therefore reducing its environmental impact and helping to create a building with low embodied energy. The wetland remains at the heart of the ethos and activities of the school, providing an ongoing cycle of opportunities for exploration and learning. There is also minimal energy used to heat and ventilate the building. The landscape courtyards play a central role in achieving this, ‘Children learn not just about trees and seasons but about the tools needed to craft and survive, how to “tread lightly” in a natural environment, and about themselves and their interactions with others. They have the time and space to reflect on and review their feelings, actions and learning.’ - according to headteacher John Keats in Dartington Primary School
- Native materials and indigenous technologies
HANDMADE SCHOOL IN RUDRAPUR, BANGLADESH provides a good example of this. The fabric of a school can often tell a story of its location, and the environment from which it is shaped, whether in a choice of locally sourced regional materials or the use of a local vernacular. This schoolreinterpret local technologies and vernacular building approaches whilst working closely with local communities. School children, teachers and volunteers were all involved in the construction process, making architecture that everyone has had a hand in. Some traditional building-technology also got the chance to be improved. For example, The earth used in the wellerbau-making process was traditionally very wet, which makes it easily malleable, but prone to shrinkage and cracking. Experiments with a drier mix and ways of compressing the earth evenly were explored, resulting in a more stable structure. The development In terms of joining, binding and overlaying the bamboo have been done in order to dealing with the larger spans and cantilevered roof that the building required.
- Social sustainability
The resilient life doesn’t only link to nature but also the human society, MAKOKO FLOATING SCHOOL IN LAGOS, NIGERIA is another cases. Makoko is a water-borne informal settlement clinging on to the Lagos mainland. Hundreds of houses are perched on the mud below the sea. Sewage and waste goes straight into the lagoon from Makoko’s 100,000 plus inhabitants. No infrastructure or services are available to residents and tensions have risen recently with reports of authorities seeking to remove Makoko to make way for prime waterside developments. The Floating School is therefore a controversial development. The Floating School, a satellite of an existing facility within Makoko, can potentially move around in order to provide access to a wider range of children, facilitated by its construction of reclaimed timber lashed to some 256 plastic barrels. By providing education for communities that depend on these areas for their livelihoods, there is an opportunity to inform people about the wider environmental concerns, helping to bring about positive change. The floating school model is one that could be replicated, creating a network of schools for a population so badly in need of support in creating a sustainable future.
Meet zero carbon status
- Environmental standard
Across the world, governments, research authorities and independent organisations are forging evermore complex and holistic approaches to appraise the environmental impact of architectural designs in their early stages and when constructed. There are nearly as many different environmental assessment methods as there are countries, which means making meaningful comparisons between schools internationally is difficult. While this is beginning to change, The USA LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) system has now been adopted by India and other Asian countries, whilst the UK-based BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is merging with the French HQE system to establish a European benchmark. it plays a fundamental role in setting standards but also providing an aspirational framework that school leaders and designers can buy into and strive for, not to receive a certificate, but to make a real difference to our shared environment.
- The Passivhaus
Passivhaus principles guide the design and construction of buildings that provide a comfortable interior climate that can be maintained without active heating and cooling systems. This could enable huge savings in monetary terms and in C02 production over the life of a building. Passivhaus buildings are also considered to be healthier as damp, stale air is exchanged for prewarmed fresh air, reducing CO2 levels and airborne contaminants, which is particularly important for young people in schools to maintain their well-being and readiness for learning.
- Through measurement & calculation
SIDWELL FRIENDS MIDDLE SCHOOL IN WASHINGTON, The school building is no longer a vessel filled with students, teachers and books, but itself an opportunity for experiential learning and discovery. pupils have taken part in a range of lab projects that use the wetlands and school energy and ventilation systems as a base from which to compare and analyse other buildings in Washington. Chemical levels in the recycled water are tested by pupils while biology classes look at the animal species within the wetland. Technology is integral to the process of building sustainability into the school, and an open-access online ‘Building Dashboard’ hosted by Lucid Design Group provides real-time outputs for energy consumption, production and water usage/recycling. This success was contributed by a team of landscape design, environmental and engineering consultants.
Management
- Understand by all users
Recent research has confirmed a large gap between the intended or projected carbon footprint of school buildings and the actual net carbon usage of the school in operation. Because few building users fully understand how the school building works. Building users need training in managing the often complex heating, lighting, ventilation and energy production systems to understand the impact that they have in their everyday activities. Therefore, Well-written, illustrated manuals and training courses should be offered to the occupants during the first few years of a building’s life.
- Integrate into curriculum
In SANDAL MAGNA PRIMARY SCHOOL, the construction materials were carefully sourced and selected, including the reuse of bricks from the previous school that was demolished. Pipework and electrical conduits are exposed and labelled in teaching spaces and intertwined with acoustic panels revealing the workings of the building to children. Making the sustainable design of the building and its landscape part of the school curriculum provides a holistic learning experience. Students gain a better understanding of the fact that decisions made today have a ripple effect and an impact on the future. They become more aware of the influence that they have on their surroundings and what they can do to change this.
