A modern bluestone clad family home on a corner site in Brighton, Australia. The Quarry house balances strong exterior form with seamlessly integrated interiors that promote shared spaces in the heart of the home and a connection with its context.

By utilizing a refined palette of bluestone, powder coated steel and timber clad soffits, exterior elevations that complimented the bluestones material properties were developed. Clad in a grid format, a focus on vertical and horizontal lines compliments the rectilinear form while concealing the exposed concrete sub structure. Being a natural and aged material immediately integrated the new build into its context, giving the feeling of a home that has been there for years and will be for many to come.

The large columns add to the solid nature of the home and balances with the high amount of glazing which aids in dissolving the barrier between interior and exterior, providing a transparent, soft touch. These columns also aid in providing an extremely free floor plan which suited the clients desire for an open plan living, dining and kitchen area.

The highly considered floor plan responds to the modern-day family, allowing for separate living zones and an open plan lifestyle. The ground floor consisting of communal spaces such as kitchen, living and dining are orientated towards the private open space directly responding to our client’s desire for seamlessly transitional experience between interior and exterior. This transitional experience is purposely framed by custom steel pivot doors that help by adding a sense of formal repetition that helps ground a highly contemporary interior.

The double height void over the dining area enables light to penetrate through the heart of the home. This void is also a central location for transition and connection to the first-floor bedrooms. With bluestone being a dominant material, it was crucial that the interior material and colour palette would soften and complement the exterior, with lighter timber finishes seen on the stair balustrade and ceiling battens.

The backyard is where this home truly established itself as a prime example of modern living. The home was to have neither a front or a backyard, rather a space that would transition from the entry and be able to flow and surround the living, kitchen and dining area on the ground floor. This also visually connected the four bedrooms on the first floor while incorporating bluestone into all the paving from the entry through to the backyard tied the different areas together.

The Quarry house is a home, that in its materiality will age gracefully and grow with the family.

Buchan Point Residence, Queensland

Buchan Point is a luxury Palm Cove residence, cantilevered from a prime elevated block in the locality of Buchan Point, is designed to provide 270 degree ocean views from every room. Balconies and outdoor areas are provided for each of the four bedrooms. A 1200 bottle wine cellar and tasting room are bermed into the cool of the earth on the basement level, and the residence includes a home gym and three bathrooms.

Lofty ceilings, large windows, clean, sturdy lines and an understated natural palette reinforce the spacious open plan design, with the main bedroom and living areas’ bifold doors and louvre windows opening up most of the northern face to the coral sea.

A generous overhang shades and extends the living area and main bedroom to the patio, which is trimmed flush with a curved 80,000 litre infinity lap pool that appears to float among the treetops.

Teak, one of the most prized tropical hardwoods for a marine environment, abounds throughout the design. The timber is highlighted in feature exterior cladding, batten screens, ceiling-high book shelves, interior nooks, benches and clerestory louvres.

The client brief for Norwood was fairly typical for an inner-city Melbourne Victorian terrace renovation. ‘Mainly they wanted to open up the living spaces to the backyard; increase the amount of natural light coming into the house; and create a welcoming space to entertain and cook for family and friends,’ says Architecture Architecture director Nick James.

Architecture Architecture agreed with the vision, although achieving this level of amenity on such a narrow block required a clever design response. 

The solution – integrating custom, built-in furniture to activate the site’s edges. Upholstered banquettes, window seating, and kitchen benches now line the living space, freeing up the centre for a generous island bench and built-in table. ‘Everything feels integrated – is integrated – fitting together like a three-dimensional jigsaw,’ says Nick. 

An opportunity to combine indoors and out was also identified, allowing the living area and rear courtyard to benefit from a sense of borrowed space. ‘We understood from the outset that designing the threshold was key, establishing continuity and generosity between these two zones and effectively unifying them,’ explains Nick. 

The kitchen bench continues into the yard for outdoor cooking; a timbered awning draws back into the house filtering light from a skylight above; and an indoor seat extends to an outdoor platform for perching and sunbathing. 

Further enhancing the sense of space are strategically placed mirrors in the living room to reflect light and garden snippets.

Once tight, shadowy and disconnected, this updated house is expansive, light-filled, and open. Major changes have been achieved without adding an extension or imposing on neighbours. Genius!

The design brief of this impressive modular home was to create an airy pavilion that takes advantage of the views while providing a private haven from the busy road below. Rendered brick walls envelope the home to create a protective compound which not only provides privacy, but ensures the prefab home is secure. The home’s long, linear form takes advantage of the northern sun and connects to the idyllic bush and mountain landscape beyond.

The approach and transition into the home was an integral part of the modular design. As such, all of the services are concealed from view. Visitors enter via a large pivoting door that penetrates the wall. They then move through a timber battened walkway where dappled light from the courtyard filters through before entering into the double height entrance space. The main living zone opens out to the north-facing courtyard, encouraging afternoons by the pool lounging to the soundtrack of nature.

Meeting all the functional requirements of modern, sustainable design, the home has a total floor area of 465 sqm and consists of 11 modules with a large, open plan kitchen/living/dining area at its heart. A timber joinery core conceals services such as butler’s pantry, laundry and powder room and houses a staircase leading to an upstairs music room.

The finishes palette is minimal and modest with timber, concrete and zinc used in an uncomplicated manner create a design that is humble and nondescript. All landscaping, including the pool, was also coordinated by Modscape.
