You Can Get Anything You Want
Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant came out in 1967 and being a student of Delta Blues, what appealed to me was the structure of the melody. I played it a lot at jam sessions, although I never got more than about 10 minutes into the song, although like many of the concept albums of the day, I knew most of the lyrics.
This was such a clever song and story, starting as you might remember “This song…

What is perhaps the most anticipated new book on Canadian art in recent memory, this new volume on E.J. Hughes’ wartime body of work is an astounding look at an exceptional collection. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book for the past few years, as Robert Amos has gradually released a series of finely crafted books on one of British Columbia’s, or I should say Canada’s most famous artists. The titles include E. J. Hughes Paints British Columbia, E. J. Hughes Paints Vancouver Island, The E. J. Hughes Book of Boats, and now, E. J. Hughes: Canadian War Artist. Actually, the book was released in the fall of 2022, and I really should have posted a review before Christmas, but I have made it my New Years resolution to make amends.
In early 1939, just as the young artist was emerging from the Great Depression, along with Orville Fisher and Paul Goranson, Hughes helped to produce the remarkable 12 panel mural for the Golden Gate International Exhibition in San Francisco. This exhibition was an extravagant event (an entire island was created in San Francisco Bay for the occasion) which featured the high ideals of combining fine art, architecture, and global culture for the betterment of humanity, much like the Arts & Crafts movement had sought to do decades earlier. Alas, the outbreak of war shattered many of those ambitions, and the artist Hughes quickly changed course and enlisted in the Canadian Army on August 30, 1939.
His two colleagues Fisher and Goranson would ultimately follow him into military service, as would another young Vancouver artist, Jack Shadbolt. Frankly, each one of these artists deserves a wartime exposition of their artwork, but for now, we have this volume to initiate the study of this tumultuous time.
The book showcases 70 paintings, drawings, and sketches from the Canadian War Museum, all prizes of the collection but works that are rarely seen in one place. E. J. Hughes created these during the artist’s war service in Ottawa, England, Wales, and Alaska. To keep things closer to home, for the last image above, I’ve included a sketch of Lt. Col. F.W. Guernsey, Mining Engineer, a portrait made at Stanley Park Fort in 1940 (not included in this book, but found in recent online auction archives). For a more in-depth review of the book, I invite you to refer to this Remembrance Day feature by the author.
From the book’s description:
“In this, the third volume [actually, you could say fourth - The E. J. Hughes Book of Boats is a smaller edition, but still stands on its own] of an award-winning series on artist E.J. Hughes (1913–2007), Robert Amos turns his focus to Hughes’s service in the Second World War.”
Tim Cook, the Director of Research at the Canadian War Museum writes about the artist:
"As an artist in uniform during the Second World War, E. J. Hughes created a profound legacy of war art for future generations to empathize, imagine, and re-imagine the Canadian military experience. In this definitive history of Hughes's contributions, Robert Amos offers a penetrating study based on unique archival material and a deep analysis into hundreds of wartime works of art. The war shaped Hughes, leading to period of great creativity that propelled him forward to become one of Canada's most recognized west coast artists." — from the book The Fight for History: 75 Years of Forgetting, Remembering, and Remaking of Canada's Second World War.

Jazz @ The Bolt comes back February 4 & 5 2023
Jazz Impresario Cory Weeds brings a weekend of Jazz to The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, February 4-5.
Jazz @ The Bolt brings a line-up of renowned artists from across Canada and around the world to join the best of Vancouver’s talent for one amazing weekend.
Jazz @ The Bolt welcomes over 25 groups and soloists performing during the day and into the evenings, all under one roof at Burnaby’s premiere cultural venue.
“We’re thrilled to bring Jazz @ The Bolt back to the Shadbolt, live and in person again this year!”, said Weeds. “The vibe at our last gathering was incredibly joyous and celebratory despite COVID restrictions. In 2023, with full-capacity audiences and an even stronger lineup, the event is sure to be better than ever.”
An indoor festival experience, (with real chairs!) is a perfect weekend for fans of great music. Jazz fans can roam from room to room to hear some of everything, or settle into one room and enjoy the full sets.
Weeds continues, “This year's programming features a varied and extraordinarily talented roster that includes a broad diversity of new, established and veteran artists. There is so much to be excited about, but I'm particularly looking forward to having fellow impresario, pianist Spike Wilner here in the city with one of my favorite saxophonists, Jesse Davis. I'm also delighted to present pianist Miki Yamanaka and her group as well as the brilliant singer, Lezlie Harrison. Much gets made about the international talent that we bring in but, as always, it’s great to be able to showcase the incredible talent that graces Vancouver stages year-round. The local musicians are what create the fabric of a scene and there are many phenomenally talented musicians here.”
Jazz @ The Bolt audiences can expect the following:
Jazz @ The Bolt 2023 - February 4-5
Saturday, February 4th is headlined by alto saxophonist Jesse Davis with The Spike Wilner Trio and vocalist Lezlie Harrison and her group. And, in keeping with tradition, Jazz @ The Bolt, once again features a large ensemble. This year, the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra performs with a special guest, the extraordinary tenor saxophonist, Seamus Blake.
Sunday, February 5th showcases performances by pianist Miki Yamanaka with Mark Turner and The Generations Quartet featuring the daughter/father combo of clarinetist Virginia MacDonald and tenor saxophonist Kirk MacDonald.
In addition, Jazz @ The Bolt has teamed up with Tim Reinert of Infidels Jazz to present a number of emerging artists over the event’s two days, introducing audiences to some real up-and-comers on the scene!
Other highlights include Sienna Dahlen/Bill Coon, the James Danderfer Sextet, Indo-Jazz Fusion project Raagaverse led by Shruti Ramani, André Lachance’s Quator, and more!

"Culture shock": 2009 interview with Rhys Darby about Rocked the Nation 2: 100 New Zealand Pop Culture Stories
from the July 5, 2009 issue of Sunday Star-Times
WHATEVER HAPPENED to Little Ted from Playschool? Where are hick wrestlers The Bushwackers and the infamous Ingham twins now? And just what is there to be proud of in our country's history? Starting on C4 tomorrow, six-part series Rocked the Nation 2: 100 New Zealand Pop Culture Stories attempts to answer these pressing questions and many more using a wealth of historic footage and interviews with almost every semi-famous personality and cultural commentator New Zealand has to offer.
Comedian Rhys Darby, of Flight of the Conchords fame hosts the show, using his naive humour and a few wellplaced expletives to take viewers from the ridiculous to the, well, even more ridiculous. Opening at number 100 with local hero done good Temuera Morrison, we learn that Elemeno P's Dave Gibson thinks Morrison's turn in Star Wars made it "a bit hard to take Maoris in space seriously", while film reviewer Dominic Corry more diplomatically thinks "seeing Tem in that environment helped us accept Kiwis in big budget movies".
Covering the length and breadth of the country, including Hamilton (claim to fame: The Rocky Horror Picture Show) and Invercargill (the arsehole of the world, according to Keith Richards, although mayor Tim Shadbolt swears the Rolling Stones were stoned and really in Dunedin that night) this is an obligatory and highly entertaining look at New Zealand's illustrious identity. Jaquie Brown is responsible for the voiceovers and in her own playful tone leads the show deftly through our most important pop culture moments. So what's number one? You'll have to watch the show to find out but we asked Darby a few questions to get the inside scoop:
Q: Why did you decide you wanted to front this show? What appealed to you about the idea?
A: I love pop culture. I think it's important to learn and laugh at our mistakes as a nation. And this is the sort of show the whole family can watch. The parents can smile and remember the pop culture stories and the kids can not only learn stuff but laugh at me being silly between the interview bits. However the thing that really appealed to me about the show was the giant RHYS they made out of polystyrene.
Q: What do these various little factoids about local history tell us about "the New Zealand character"? Is there really such a thing, do you think?
A: The most obvious thing that comes out of these wonderful stories is New Zealand's great sense of humour. I think we really are one of the funniest nations in the world and we've just kept it to ourselves. We laugh at ourselves and don't show off about it. That's our character. It's a very dry sense of humour. We don't take ourselves too seriously but on the odd occasion we do and that's usually when sport's involved, then we take ourselves far too seriously but that's OK. It just means we're very passionate people too. So there you have it. That's our character. Dry, funny and passionate.
Q: Working so much overseas yourself, how would you say New Zealanders are perceived outside this country?
A: Dry, funny and passionate. But that's only a recent thing. We used to be mainly perceived as nice hard- working farmers who could pour a pint and play bloody good rugby.
Q: Programmes exploiting our national nostalgia are soooo yesterday, don't you think?
A: No I'm afraid you're wrong. Who told you that? Some git on Facebook? Shows exploiting our national nostalgia are soooo today man! In fact I'd go as far as to say they are even soooo tomorrow and the day after! Soon shows exploiting our national nostalgia will be the only thing people are twittering about.
Q: Did you guys manage to find that breakdancer with the white gloves from the Patea Maori Club's "Poi E" video?
A: Yeah he's now working in a fish 'n' chip shop in Kaikoura.
Rocked the Nation 2: 100 New Zealand Pop Culture Stories, C4, Monday, 8.30pm.

Pork Pie Review
Hello all!
So as you can probably tell by the title I have just watched Pork Pie during it’s advanced screening (it hits cinemas around NZ tomorrow) and thought I’d give you my thoughts on it, for those who are interested! But the way I’ll do it is doing a comparison between the two movies so you can see that it’s not just me loving the remake (because I did) just because Dean’s in it.
Goodbye Pork Pie (1981)
This movie was the first NZ movie to make over a million dollars at the NZ box office, which for the 80′s is a pretty impressive feat. It’s become almost folk law in NZ, with the saying “I’m taking this bloody car to Invercargill” becoming iconic.
I watched it for the first time this year going into it with the mindset of it being a great kiwi movie that is loved by all.
I kinda have to disagree with the “great” part. Aside from the fact that I paused it a few times to go and do things as it wasn’t really holding my attention there were two things that were the most standoutish for me.
1. Lack of storyline. Aside from them racing to Invercargill and trying to outwit the police there wasn’t a lot going for the plot itself. The female lead disappeared halfway through after having been arrested but there was no other focus on her once that had happened, the story kinda jumped from city to city and overall there wasn’t a lot linking it together. In fact even the original director Geoff Murphy was surprised it did as well as it did.
“Even the film's writer and director Geoff Murphy seemed surprised by the massive impact. Writing about 10 years later, in the book Film in Aotearoa New Zealand, he agreed the movie "had a certain naive charm and was almost completely without pretension", but felt "it was rough, not particularly well-structured and although not without subtext, was not particularly profound. So when the film became a huge success and "was hailed as great, I was not sucked in". Full article here.
So to have the direct himself say that makes me question what all the fuss was about.
2. Now this may just be because I’m a 90′s baby, or perhaps its all the PC bullshit, but by god was the original derogatory! Like we’re talking about the main male leads calling women “bitches, sluts and whores” throughout the movie. I was actually left feeling a bit gobsmacked, and then enlightened because if this was meant to be reflective of NZ society back in the 80′s then I can see why the rest of the world had such and bad view of NZ males. Even now the older generations are known for being harsh and sometimes downright rude, and this movie captured that pretty damn well.
It’s also an issue Matt Murphy clearly knew needed fixing.
Pork Pie (2017)
I loved it. There’s no two ways about it guys. This was fun, intense and full of fond eye rolls. Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t perfect; the character development for Luke and Keira could have been taken a bit further if they’d tried and it does jump around a little bit at the start, but other than that it was well worth the wait!
The car chases were intense, the awkwardness and spaced outness of Jon was done perfectly and both Luke and Keira were portrayed as people out to do what was right for them. I’m pleased to say the storyline was fleshed out even more, especially for Keira who doesn’t just disappear this time, and the way the two boys make their way down south and how they interact with the locals they pass.
It’s still not something you’d take your five year old to see; not with drugs, swearing and sex alluded to if not use shown outright, but it’s definitely enjoyable and fun and overall wonderful.
I would highly recommend it to anyone who’s thinking about seeing it, you wont be disappointed!!
Now, as this is a NZ movie there’s a couple of “Kiwi” things to clarify that are mentioned in the movie.
1. Big Wednesday - it’s like Lotto, but was offering something slightly different for the prizes. Since then it’s been disbanded ans they just do Lotto on Monday and Wednesday’s.
2. Tim Shadbolt - Tim Shadbolt is the mayor for invercargill and is revealed when help arrives for Jon and he peels off a mask near the end. That got a cheer from our cinema :P
Anway, I hope you all enjoyed that and get to enjoy it in your own country at some point, but for not, farewell!!
