Learning to be silly
Tumblr media
It was a sunny afternoon in Capeside, and Joey and Pacey were enjoying a rare day off together. They had decided to visit the park near the creek, a place where they could relax and escape the pressures of their everyday lives. The park was quiet, with only the sound of birds chirping and the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze.
They spread a blanket under a large oak tree, unpacking a picnic Joey had prepared. Pacey admired her thoughtfulness as he bit into a sandwich. He loved these moments with Joey, where everything seemed perfect and the world outside seemed to fade away.
After they finished eating, Joey lay back on the blanket, her head resting on Pacey's lap. He absentmindedly played with her hair, enjoying the peace and quiet. But Joey, had a playful glint in her eye. She had noticed something the other day when they had been fooling around in her living room and her hand accidentally brushed his ribs - Pacey was ticklish.
She had always found it hard to be truly silly with Pacey. It was something she associated more with Dawson, her childhood friend, who seemed to effortlessly bring out the lighter side of her. Pacey, with his rough upbringing and need to be seen as strong and reliable, often struggled to let go and be vulnerable. Joey wanted to change that, even if just for a moment.
"Pacey, I've been meaning to ask," Joey said, looking up at him with a mischievous smile. "Are you ticklish?"
Pacey's eyes widened slightly, a flicker of embarrassment crossing his face. "Joey, don't," he warned, his voice a mix of hesitation and apprehension.
But Joey was undeterred. She sat up, her fingers already moving towards his sides. "Come on, Pacey. It's just a bit of fun," she said, her tone playful.
Pacey tensed, his muscles tightening as her fingers made contact with his ribs. "Jo, seriously," he began, trying to maintain his composure. But Joey's fingers were relentless, and soon he was squirming, a reluctant laugh bubbling up from his chest.
"Pacey Witter, you are ticklish!" Joey declared triumphantly, her fingers dancing lightly over his ribs and sides. Pacey's laughter grew louder, his attempts to fend her off growing weaker as he gave in to the ticklish sensation.
"Okay, okay, you win!" Pacey gasped, trying to catch his breath. But Joey's curiosity was piqued, and she wasn't quite ready to stop. She moved her fingers lower, aiming for his feet.
"Not the feet, Joey, please!" Pacey begged, his voice high-pitched and desperate. But Joey couldn't resist. She gently ran her fingers over the soles of his feet, and Pacey's reaction was immediate and explosive.
He kicked reflexively, his laughter becoming frantic and uncontrollable. "Joey, no!” he cried, tears of laughter streaming down his face. His body twisted and turned, trying to escape her playful touch.
Joey paused for a moment, her eyes softening as she saw the desperation in his expression. She didn't want to push him too far. "Alright, alright," she said gently, easing her touch but not completely stopping.
She continued her gentle tickling, her fingers tracing delicate patterns over his arches and the tips of his toes. Pacey's laughter, though still desperate, took on a different quality. Amidst the unbearable ticklishness, there was a sense of fun and silliness.
Joey's eyes sparkled with affection as she watched him. "See? Its not so bad," she whispered, her fingers slowing to a gentle caress.
Pacey took a deep breath, his laughter subsiding into soft chuckles. "You know, this seems like more of a Joey and Dawson thing," he admitted, a hint of vulnerability in his voice.
Joey’s expression softened. She reached up to stroke his cheek. "Pacey. It’s okay to let go and be silly sometimes. Especially with me."
He looked into her eyes, seeing only love and understanding. "I want to," he said quietly. "I just... don’t always know how."
Joey smiled gently. "We’ll figure it out together." She leaned in and kissed him softly, a promise in her touch.
Pacey nodded, feeling a weight lift from his shoulders. They lay back on the blanket, Joey snuggling into his side. The warmth of her presence made him feel safe, like he could truly be himself.
After a few moments of comfortable silence, Joey broke the quiet. "You know, I think you’re pretty good at being silly when you want to be," she teased, poking his side playfully.
Pacey chuckled, this time without any trace of embarrassment. "Well, I do have my moments," he replied, wrapping his arms around her.
They spent the rest of the afternoon in the park, talking, laughing, and enjoying each other’s company. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Pacey realised that with Joey, he could be both strong and silly, serious and playful. She accepted him in all his facets, and that made all the difference.
Back on the blanket, Joey sat up and stretched, looking at Pacey with a tender smile. "Ready to head back?"
Pacey nodded, getting to his feet and offering her a hand. "Yeah, let’s go home."
As they walked hand in hand, leaving the park behind, Pacey felt a renewed sense of hope. With Joey by his side, he knew he could face anything, embrace every part of himself, and find joy in the silliest of moments. And that, he realised, was what love was all about.

A not-so-peaceful pedicure
Tumblr media
Pacey Witter paced back and forth outside the Potter B&B, his frustration building with every step. For the umpteenth time, he’d managed to screw things up with Joey. It seemed to be his special talent. This time, he’d done something monumentally stupid: he’d bailed on their anniversary dinner because of a last-minute job offer that turned out to be a scam. As a result, Joey was furious, and he couldn’t blame her.
When he'd tried to explain, Bessie had intervened, blocking his way with a stern look. Joey had retreated inside, refusing to even look at him. Pacey had spent the next few days wracking his brain for a way to get through to her, but she was resolute. The longer he stood outside the B&B, the more hopeless he felt.
Then, he remembered the pedicure voucher Jen had given Joey for her birthday. She'd mentioned in passing that she was planning to use it today. An idea began to form in his mind. It was a long shot, but maybe, just maybe, he could catch her at the spa and get her to listen to him.
With renewed determination, Pacey made his way to the salon. When he arrived, he spotted Joey almost immediately, reclining in one of the plush chairs, her eyes closed as she relaxed. Taking a deep breath, he walked over and settled into the chair next to her.
"Joey," he began, but she didn't open her eyes.
"Pacey, go away," she said flatly.
"I'm not leaving until you hear me out," he insisted.
Joey sighed, finally opening her eyes and turning to face him. "You really know how to ruin a girl's relaxation time, don't you?"
"I'm sorry," Pacey said earnestly. "I really am. I just... I messed up. Again. And I need you to know how much I regret it."
Before Joey could respond, the pedicure attendants arrived and began their work. The attendant started soaking their feet. Pacey wasn't sure how this was going to help his case, but he was determined to see it through.
As the attendant moved on to scrubbing his feet, Pacey felt the first tingles of discomfort. He tried to ignore it, focusing on his apology. "Joey, I know I let you down. I just—" His words were cut off by a sudden burst of laughter. The pedicurist had started using the foot file, and it was more than Pacey could handle. He had forgotten how ticklish he was on his feet.
Joey watched, her irritation giving way to amusement as Pacey squirmed and giggled uncontrollably. "Pace, are you okay?"
He could barely get the words out between his laughter. "I'm... fine... just... really... tickles..."
Despite herself, Joey started to giggle. Pacey's predicament was too ridiculous not to find funny. He looked so helpless, and for a moment, all the anger she'd been holding onto melted away.
The pedicurist seemed oblivious to Pacey's distress, methodically scrubbing his foot with the foot file, holding his ankle with a vice like grip. Pacey's laughter escalated, tears forming in the corners of his eyes. "Please... oh god... Joey... help..."
Joey bit her lip, trying to stifle her own laughter. "Pacey, just try to hold still."
"I... can't... it tickles... so much!" Pacey's face was red, his entire body twitching and writhing as he tried not to kick the pedicurist in the face. The pedicurist switched to the other foot, and Pacey's laughter reached a new peak. He clutched the armrests of the chair, knuckles white, as he struggled to regain control.
Joey couldn't contain her laughter any longer. "Pacey, you look ridiculous!"
"I know... just... please make it stop..." Pacey gasped out, his words punctuated by bouts of uncontrollable giggles.
Finally, the pedicurist paused, giving Pacey a brief respite. He took deep, ragged breaths, trying to compose himself. "Joey, I'm really... really sorry. Please, forgive me."
Joey shook her head, still smiling. "You're an idiot, you know that?"
"I do," Pacey replied, his voice hoarse from laughing. "But I'm your idiot."
Joey's smile softened. "Yes, you are." She sighed, reaching out to take his hand. "I forgive you, Pacey. But you have to stop doubting yourself and us."
He squeezed her hand gratefully. "I promise, Jo. No more screw-ups."
Joey laughed lightly. "We'll see about that. But for now, let's just enjoy this pedicure, okay?"
Pacey nodded, relief flooding through him. He knew he was far from perfect, but as long as Joey was by his side, he felt like he could handle anything—even a ticklish pedicure.

Letting go
Tumblr media
It was a quiet night on True Love, Pacey’s boat, anchored in a secluded cove just outside Capeside. The stars twinkled above, casting a gentle glow on the water, and a soft breeze rustled through the sails. Inside the cozy cabin, Pacey and Joey lay entwined in each other’s arms, basking in the rare tranquility of their shared moments.
Pacey couldn’t help but reflect on how far they had come. From high school rivals to best friends and now lovers, Joey Potter had always been a constant, a beacon of hope in his tumultuous life. He adored her, and she, him. But there were still parts of his past that haunted him, small shadows that flickered at the edges of his happiness.
As they lay there, Joey’s fingers traced lazy patterns on his chest. She loved these moments, feeling the steady rise and fall of his breath beneath her touch. Her fingers wandered absently, finding their way to his ribs. Suddenly, Pacey jolted, a reflexive twitch he couldn’t control.
Joey’s eyes sparkled with mischief as she noticed his reaction. “Pacey Witter, are you ticklish?” she asked, her voice a mix of curiosity and amusement.
Pacey stiffened, a frown crossing his features. Memories of his brother Doug and sister Gretchen’s merciless tickling assaults flooded back, bringing with them a surge of irritation. He had always hated being tickled, feeling powerless and exposed. It was a childhood torment that had left its mark. The joys of being the youngest child.
“Jo, don’t,” he warned, his voice tense.
But Joey, ever perceptive, saw the fleeting pain in his eyes and softened her approach. She gently kissed his frown away, her lips brushing against his skin like a whisper. “It’s just me, Pacey,” she murmured. “I won’t hurt you. I promise.”
Her words, tender and reassuring, began to chip away at his defenses. He took a deep breath, willing himself to relax. Joey’s fingers resumed their gentle exploration, this time moving with deliberate slowness, giving him the chance to acclimate.
It was different with Joey. Her touch was soft, unhurried, and filled with love. There was no malice, no intent to overpower. She was inviting him to trust her, to let go of the past and embrace the present. Despite his initial reluctance, he found himself responding to her touch, a reluctant smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
Joey’s eyes lit up as she noticed his change in demeanor. She giggled softly, her laughter like music to his ears. “See? It’s not so bad, is it?” she teased, her fingers dancing lightly along his sides.
Pacey squirmed, the ticklish sensation making him bite his lip to stifle a laugh. “Okay, okay, I get it,” he said, his voice filled with reluctant amusement. “Just… be gentle.”
Joey’s heart swelled with affection as she continued her playful ministrations. She knew how hard it was for Pacey to let his guard down, to allow himself to be vulnerable. His willingness to trust her with something so intimate and painful from his past was a testament to the depth of their love.
Joey’s fingers wandered further, tracing light patterns along his ribs and dipping to his stomach. Pacey’s muscles tensed involuntarily, a mixture of laughter and groans escaping his lips. “Joey, seriously,” he gasped, “this is torture.”
“Not torture,” she corrected with a mischievous grin. “Just a little fun.” She moved her fingers to his sides, skimming just above his hips, eliciting a helpless burst of laughter from him.
“You’re… impossible,” Pacey managed between laughs, trying to squirm away but finding himself caught in the playful trap of her touch. His body jerked with each gentle stroke, and he felt both the unbearable ticklishness and the sweet intimacy of the moment.
“Admit it, you like it,” Joey teased, her fingers now dancing over his bare feet.
The moment her fingers touched his feet, Pacey’s reaction was immediate and explosive. His entire body jerked, and uncontrollable laughter burst from his lips. “Joey, no, not there!” he begged, his voice high-pitched and desperate.
Joey, however, couldn’t resist the opportunity. “Oh, this is even better,” she said with a playful grin, her fingers lightly skimming over the soles of his feet.
Pacey’s laughter became frantic, his body thrashing as he tried to pull his feet away. “Please, Jo, I can’t take it!” he cried, his eyes watering from the intensity of his laughter.
Joey paused for a moment, her eyes softening with affection. “Alright, alright,” she said gently, easing her touch but not completely stopping. “Just a little more, okay? I promise I’ll be gentle.”
She continued her gentle tickling, her fingers tracing delicate patterns over his arches and the tips of his toes. Pacey’s laughter, though still desperate, took on a different quality. Amidst the unbearable ticklishness, there was a sense of surrender, of letting go.
Pacey gasped, his laughter mingling with groans of both pleasure and torment. His body shivered under her touch, and despite the intensity, he found himself enjoying the closeness, the intimacy of the moment.
Joey’s eyes were filled with love as she watched him, her heart swelling with affection. “See? It’s not so bad,” she whispered, her fingers slowing to a gentle caress.
Eventually, Joey’s fingers stilled, and she snuggled closer to him, her head resting on his chest. Pacey wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight. He had never imagined that something as simple as a tickle could bring them even closer, but with Joey, everything felt different. Everything felt right.
“Thank you, Jo,” he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
Joey lifted her head to look at him, her eyes filled with love. “For what?”
“For showing me that not all tickles are bad,” he said with a wry smile. “And for being you.”
She kissed him softly, their lips meeting in a sweet, lingering kiss. “Always, Pacey,” she murmured against his lips. “Always.”
And in that moment, under the starlit sky, Pacey knew that no matter what shadows the past held, with Joey by his side, he could face them all.
