"Plastic Jesus" Tia Blake, 1971

Plastic Jesus was originally written by George Cromarty and Ed Rush in 1957 and performed live in 1962 at the San Francisco State College Folk Festival, where it was recorded and released later that year in their duo band The GoldcoastSingers.

"On a foggy Sunday afternoon in March of 1962, THE GOLDCOAST SINGERS clambered on stage at San Francisco State College before an unsuspecting audience of 1,000 or so. After they were introduced as the final performers at the San Francisco State Folk Festival, people in the audience mumbled, "Who?". This query was followed by shouts of "More!". The reaction was, to say the least, wild. After five encores, breathless and perspiring like pigs, they came on for one last "song," entitled "Plastic Jesus." This ode flattened the audience. All through the performance people had been walking out of the auditorium grumbling, "Mis-guided youth" and "Whippersnappers," but the finale was too much for those whose soft spots had not yet been touched. A dozen (actually twelve) marched up the aisles in righteous indignation. The remaining nine hundred some odd rose in a tremendous ovation. Fortunately that concert was taped, and this record is the product"

I think that the truth is stretched here a bit, and like with the song "Plastic Jesus," it is meant to be comedic.

This is the only album produced by The Goldcoast Singers, but George Cromarty would continue to produce music as a solo artist.

later, in 1964, the song was recorded and performed by Ernie Marrs and was mentioned in Vol. 14, no. 2 in "Sing Out! Magazine.

with Ernie Marrs being credited with writing the lyrics.

Later, in 1967, the song was featured in the movie "Cool Hand Luke", performed by Paul Newman. Interesting for taking the satirical and comedic song and reimagining it as somber. this movie is likely what popularized the song in addition to its feature in the magazine.

in 1971, Tia Blake released what is effectively her only album in France, which led to it being mostly forgotten until it was re-released in 2011. Since then, it has become more well-known. This makes me very happy because i love this album! i think all the songs on it are beautiful and wonderfully made. It's a shame she didn't record more.

I think something very interesting happened with the song, and these 4 covers effectively tell a story with how they each re-imagine it.

the original lyrics by The Goldcoast Singers are biting with satire and are funny if not a bit mean-spirited. We, as the audience, are not meant to relate with the person with the plastic Jesus bobblehead.

then, ernie marrs' version doesn't have the intro of the original duo, and shortens the lyrics a bit, but like other works that Ernie Marrs helped write like "The People are Scratching" and "What a Friend we have in Congress" (1966) and (1963)

the humor and satire are a bit more gentle and more subtle. To me, it feels like if you aren't really paying attention, you could miss it. it's comedic, but it could pretty easily be remembered as a charming fun folk song rather than a satire on Christian commercialism and a way of making fun of rednecks.

the movie version song is completely different. I'll be honest, i have not seen this movie, but it seems like this song is 1. completely genuine and devoid of sarcasm, and 2. very, very sad. the song morphs into bitter melonchy. it is the farthest thing from funny.

Tia Blake's version returns the song to its roots. kind of. Her version is certainly happy, but it's also painfully genuine. It is also the only song in her 1971 album that i would describe as happy, the rest being mournful, spooky, or full of longing. plastic Jesus is an odd choice. AND, her cover is my favorite. I think there is something beautiful and whimsical about the story presented in the song, about having so much joy come from a mundane object. Its a cheerful and hopeful song in an otherwise tragic album.

the first time i heard the song by tia blake was in a folk punk playlist. i didn't understand why it was on there at first, but i do now. there is a sort of revolutionary optimism in finding hope from the mundane in the midst of hopeless circumstances.

well you see . it IS a lawyer game and it IS silly. but there's also the most emotionally devastating lore in existence. my fav character is a young adult with absent parents her sister is the family member she's closest to until her sister is murdered in front of her and she's arrested on suspicion of murder and then after that her only remaining family are her aunt who is an accomplice to (another) murder that she is once again framed for and her younger cousin who she becomes responsible for raising after her aunt is arrested and then she's kidnapped and held hostage and then her mother finally reappears in her life but oops she's possessed tries to kill her daughter and is then killed in front of her . yay!

How do they comfort each other when one of them is scared? (For G’raha)

G’raha will sing to her in her worst moments when she needs comfort the most; he’s a great singer and the sound of his voice is so soothing to her that she’ll slowly start to forget what she was afraid of (which is usually nightmares post-endwalker).

Eisha will comfort him with words of affirmation, combatting every hurtful thought sparked from guilt with love. She’ll point out every single thing she loves about him— his kindness, his intelligence, his strength —and she’ll hold and caress his hands.

The Sweet - The Ballroom Blitz 1973

"The Ballroom Blitz" is a song by British glam rock band The Sweet, written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. The song reached number one in Canada, number two in the UK Singles Chart and the Australian Chart, and number five on the US Billboard Hot 100. It remains an enduring favourite, with more than 90 million streams on Spotify alone by the end of 2022. "The Ballroom Blitz" was inspired by an incident on 27 January 1973 when the band were performing at the Grand Hall in Kilmarnock, Scotland, and were driven offstage by a bottling. The song appeared on the US and Canadian versions of Desolation Boulevard but never appeared on a Sweet album in the UK, other than hits compilations. The initial guitar and drum riff of the song has similarity to a 1963 song by Bobby Comstock called "Let's Stomp".

An early cover of "The Ballroom Blitz" was by the Les Humphries Singers in 1974, the first German single to reach #1 in New Zealand. The Damned covered it in 1979, which featured Lemmy from Motörhead on bass guitar, and Tia Carrere did a cover on the soundtrack to Wayne's World in 1992. In 2020, industrial metal band 3Teeth released Guns Akimbo, a two-track set that included a cover version of "The Ballroom Blitz", which was previously featured in the 2019 action comedy film Guns Akimbo.

“Ugh, that was amazing!” I gasp out, I’ve been out of breath since playing the seventh song and just now catching my breath. The group and I stood talking for a bit before our manager butts in “My favorite people in the world, sorry for interrupting but there are some people here to meet you”

I look around confused as does the rest of the group “We’re not supposed to do fan meet and greets tonight” our lead singer Tia says to him. He shakes his head smiling “I was told that there was another band in the audience tonight and they wanted to meet you guys” He says smiling too hard, I squint my eyes at him before asking “Who?” his phone beeps and he walks over to one of the doors, before opening he smirks at me “its the band bad omens.”

I can feel my heart starting to pound, I told Carlisle in confidence how much of a crush I had on their singer, and knowing him, this wasn't just a coincidence that they are here after telling him. He opens the door and welcomes the band in before walking them over to us.

I watch as he introduces the girls by name and I make eye contact with Noah as he now stands in front of me, I inhale a subtle deep breath before smiling up at him “Hi I’m Y/n” I introduce myself, sticking my hand out. His hand is so warm as he shakes my hand, holding it a few seconds longer (Or I’m being delulu) He smiles down at me “Yeah, I used to watch your live streams”

my heart stutters as he laughs slightly at my reaction. I close my mouth, not knowing it was open. “Thank you, you guys are amazing” I realize I’m only addressing Noah and I look to the side at the rest of the band “Seriously, You guys killed it” they smile in appreciation. I look back and notice Noah still staring at me. 

That is how we became best friends, fast forward to now and a lot has changed, Tia left the group to work solo, I, Isla and Valery decided to stay a throuple and it’s been even more amazing, They deemed me to start singing and the fans have been so supportive and like our new image.

The band and I are very good friends with Noah’s, more so Noah and I have become close, him helping me with my performance anxiety and me helping his. Over the past year, fans have been going crazy over our friendship, now and then we come across a fan edit of us on TikTok, and it's pretty funny reacting to them on live stream.

I sit at home in my gaming room and have been live streaming the past two hours playing a game and talking to some fans when my phone lights up with a message. “Speak of the devil” I laugh and look at Noah's message asking if he can come over, after responding I go back to streaming.

“So I’ll probably see you all at the next show here in Virginia soon, I’m so excited,” I say with excitement not knowing Noah has just walked in the room but considering I can’t hear with these headphones on. I looked at the chat box as it was starting to go crazy “Someone’s behind you?” before I could turn I felt warmth surrounding my back and sighed in relief.

Noah bends behind my chair, hugging me from behind, nestling his head in the side of my hair, I chuckle as the chat starts spamming and I can barely read the messages. He lets go and swings a chair over to sit next to me “I didn't know you were gonna be here that quick, you scared the shit out of me” I lightly slap his stomach. He laughs and catches my hand in his “I was already on my way over when I called you” I start to laugh hysterically.

I look at the chat, “Please tell me what Noah smells like?” I laugh and shake my head, “Are you and Noah together?” I shake my head again “Noah looks like he would smell like cinnamon or mint but in reality, he smells like Victoria's Secret perfume” I smirk at the comments flowing through and look over my shoulder at him.

He wasn't even paying attention to the stream, he was staring and watching his hand rub back and forth on my side and back, I tapped his knee and he looked up “Mhm?” I laugh as he isn't paying attention “They were asking what you smelled like” he furrows his eyebrows and looks to the stream “Some people say I look like I smell like mint or maybe cinnamon but I smell like that perfume you use” he points to me at the end.

I continue to stare at him, I forget how deep his voice can get, I break away from my thoughts when I see his face form into a smug smirk, and he looks me up and down, I take a quick breath and turn my attention back to the stream.

“Why would he smell like you?” I read one of the comments, I glance at him slightly and hover my cursor on the end stream button “Because when he lays on top of me at night my smells linger onto him” I laugh and quickly end the stream before the fans spam and go crazy.

I look at Noah as he starts to laugh “I can’t believe you did that, they're gonna go feral now” He says standing up from the pink furry desk chair, he holds his hand out for me to help me stand up. I stare up at him and hug his waist “I gotta give the fans what they want” I smirk, tap his chest, and walk out of the room. 

Noah stands in the middle of the room and glances at me as I walk away, smirking and feeling proud and claimed by the girl who is the love of his life and the girl who makes him willingly spray Victoria's Secret perfume on so he can smell her when she’s not in a room.

okay let me back up...

For anyone who wasn't aware, Eternal Wind is the overworld theme of FF3, but when you hear it in FF14 it's basically G'raha Tia's theme. afaik it only plays during scenes he is in

So the other day I found out that in FF13 Lightning Returns, for some reason there is an acoustic version of Eternal Wind with lyrics and like...I know this game came out years before FF14, but I feel like they fit G'raha SO WELL:

HAWKS, the #2 pro-hero, the man who sends away smiles at fellow citizens and takes pictures with cheery children. The man who had girls squealing and wishing to be in his “entourage”. Just one night with the handsome man and they’ll be satisfied with life, maybe some money as well. Though, they don’t know that it’s the same man who had your head spinning like a damn wheel, wondering day in and day out why you are still trying to put effort into something that you don’t even know will work. But…he convinced you otherwise; giving you bouquets of flowers when he comes home, good morning texts, sweet loves by the night. If all this he does/gives to you, why aren’t you together? What’s stopping you two from an official label?

He pushes it off, he keeps saying he’s not ready. He doesn’t think he can juggle being a pro-hero with a girlfriend. Such a ridiculous and stupid reason but when you tried to talk yourself out of it, you were convinced by sweet talks that he needs you and you know your heart yearns for him. You couldn’t break his heart by leaving, could you?

AOMINE isn’t the best at displaying his love for you but he tries, rarely. He has stated himself that he isn’t really a lover boy but in his heart, he knows that you both belong together. He just can’t find it in himself to show you. Especially with the glitz and glamor of being an all star basketball player, love for him may not be suitable. Well, publicly being in love, to be exact. The blogs, the allegations, the scandals, it would all be too “out there” and Aomine has a very private life to abide by. Being famous and having people invested in his life is one thing but allowing his lover in the spotlight? Nah, he wouldn’t do that to her.

But then again, the gifts he buys you remind you that he still thinks about you and loves you dearly. The dainty bracelet from Chanel, the bouquet of roses he leaves on your nightstand, the occasional messages he sends, they all mean some sort of value. Even if the man who sends them isn’t ready to push his love further like you want it to be.

EREN, everyone’s favorite certified lover boy with the voice as comforting as the blues but the lyricism of an aching heart. Quite odd considering that the amount of love he displays to the world, mostly his fans, you don’t tend to see it? A questionable trait for a man whose songs are about girls who have treated his love like a used rag, but yet he has the similar traits to said girls. He sings constantly about wanting to be loved in a way that makes him feel unstoppable, safe, and comfortable but he rarely shows that with you. To make matters worse than they are, he would say that what y’all have is nothing too serious so why take it serious?

Though, the male singer will always remind you of how much he loves you when it’s just the two of you. You’ll always remember after his shows when the room is hot and full of his “love” with steamy kisses and bodies tangled up in this so-called “love” he wants to claim.
