Mutism/Nonspeaking Awareness Flag
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I, like many others, suffer from mutism due to a physical disability. Every flag I've seen for the nonspeaking and nonverbal community is based in autism and related issues, without representation for those of us who are nonspeaking for reasons such as being a cancer survivor, schizophrenia, muscle tension dysphonia, spasmodic dysphonia, aphrasia, brain damage, etc. and related conditions. There are a large variety of conditions that I rarely see representation for, and this flag is for us.
The white stripes represents hope for a more accepting future for nonspeaking and mute people.
The purple stripes represents entirely nonspeaking people.
The blue stripes represents AAC and sign language users.
The green stripes represents people with fluctuating levels of verbality.
The yellow stripe represents community and the way we have each other's backs in this struggle.
The symbol is a vague representation of the lack of a voice. I couldn't decide which one looked better so feel free to use either.

Types of throat cancer:
Pharyngeal cancer (Tonsillar cancer)
Laryngeal cancer
This type of throat cancer is categorized based on the specific cells involved and their characteristics, like squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, or lymphoma. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most regular type, accounting for the majority of throat cancers.
Causes of throat cancer:
Use of tobacco
Consumption of alcohol
Human papillomavirus infection (HPV)
Poor diet
Age factor
Exposed to unidentified chemicals
Poor oral hygiene
Signs and Symptoms of throat cancer:
Continuous sore throat
Difficulty swallowing aka dysphagia
Change in voice
Ear ache
Non-stop cough
Undefined weight loss
Neck Swelling
Visible lumps or masses
Diagnosis of throat cancer:
Physical examination
Endoscopy
Imaging tests like CT scan, MRI scan, PET scan
Biopsy
Blood Test
Lung Function Test (LFT)
Treatments for throat cancer:
The treatment for throat cancer depends on different factors, such as the type, location, stage of the cancer, and overall health of the individual. Treatment options may include:
Surgery

Ask me about the first five doctors who dismissed my persistently sore throat over several months as strep. Spoiler alert: it was HPV throat cancer. But it couldn’t POSSIBLY be that, because I was a “woman” (presumably, at least at the time) and “HPV throat cancer only affects men.” Except no, it doesn’t, because it’s not a genetically-linked cancer, it’s a behaviorally-based cancer. More men have it, because there are MORE MEN, statistically, having oral sex with women than there are queer women having oral sex with women. (Just by sheer numbers, mind you; proportionally, this really should be considered a high risk factor for queer women.)
Did you know there’s an HPV vaccine? It’s available for anyone between the ages of 9-45. It can prevent you or your kids from getting throat cancer (which, by the way: is a miserable experience to go through).
Doctors should snark at each other more, be a bit mean. Not for no reason, mind you. But if five doctors blow me off about symptoms and doctor number six FINALLY runs actual tests and gets a diagnosis, I think it should be Doctor Six's right to call up the other five and tell them they're lazy pieces of shit. That should be socially encouraged. Those first five doctors clearly can't listen to patients, but maybe another doctor might finally get to them.

Throat Cancer: Types, Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment & Prevention
Throat cancer refers to cancer that begins in the pharynx or larynx but and refers to cancer that starts in the esophagus (food pipe). Most of the throat cancers are squamous cell carcinoma (cancer that begin in thin, flat cells). There are two main types of throat cancer; one is pharyngeal cancer and the other is laryngeal cancer; these two types have several subtypes. Symptoms commonly include persistent sore throat, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, and lumps in the neck.
There is no exact known cause of throat cancer but there are several factors increases the risk such as excessive smoking, alcohol consumption, infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein Barr virus (EBV), poor diet, and family history of cancer which increases the risk of developing throat cancer. Surgical oncologists and radiation oncologists can treat throat cancer.
Types of throat cancer
The throat primarily has two main parts: the pharynx and the larynx. Cancer of the throat can begin in either in the pharynx or larynx. The type of throat cancer depends on the type of cell in which it is originates:
Pharyngeal cancer
Pharynx is a thin muscular tube that extends from the back of the nose and mouth to the trachea. The cancer that begins or originates in the pharynx is called pharyngeal cancer. The pharynx has three main sections:
Nasopharynx: It is the upper part of the pharynx where the throat connects to the mouth and nose. Cancer which originates in the nasopharynx is termed as nasopharyngeal cancer.
Oropharynx: It is the middle part of the pharynx which includes tonsils where the throat meets the oral cavity. Cancer, which originates in the oropharynx is termed oropharyngeal cancer.
Hypopharynx: It is the bottom or end part of the pharynx where the throat meets the windpipe. Cancer originating in the hypopharynx is called hypopharyngeal cancer.
Throat cancer can begin in any part of the pharynx, but the most common area of throat cancer development is the oropharynx. Hypopharyngeal and nasopharyngeal cancer are rare forms of throat cancer.
Laryngeal cancer
It is the part of the throat between the base of the tongue and the windpipe. It is termed as a voice box as it has vocal cords in it. The cancer that begins in the larynx is termed laryngeal cancer. It has three main sections:
Supraglottis: It is the upper portion of the larynx which is above the vocal cords including the epiglottis.
Glottis: It is the middle portion of the larynx where the vocal cords are located.
Subglottis: It is the lower portion of the larynx situated between the vocal cords and the windpipe.
Throat cancer symptoms
Symptoms of throat cancer may differ based on the location of the cancer. Asymmetrical tonsils, persistent sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, and a lump in the neck are some of the initial symptoms of throat cancer. The following are some of the signs and symptoms of throat cancer:
Sore throat
The pain or discomfort in the throat is the most common symptom of throat cancer and this pain doesn’t go away.
Voice changes
Throat cancer may affect the voice of the patient, the voice might sound different and may be quieter, husky, or sound as if the patient has cold all the time. The patient may slur some words or may have trouble pronouncing certain sounds.
Trouble swallowing
Pain or burning sensation may be felt in throat cancer patients when chewing and swallowing food. The patient may feel like the food has stuck in the throat.
A lump in throat
Due to enlarged lymph node a lump in throat may develop. Swelling or inflammation in one or more lymph nodes in the neck region is the most common symptom of throat cancer, as well as other cancers of the head and neck.
Weight loss
In different types of cancer, weight loss is the most common symptom. Throat cancer makes it difficult for the patient to eat and swallow, which can gradually lead to weight loss.
Other symptoms of throat cancer:
Trouble in opening the mouth
Trouble in moving the tongue
White patches on the tongue or the lining of the mouth
Nose bleeds
Headaches
Throat pain

Step 3 (clink, clink, clink, clink)
I was in a tangle. The tumor(s) in my throat were so large that I couldn't undergo the general surgeries I needed (implanting a chest port, and the PEG tube, hereafter known as 'the feeding tube.').
In order for more cutting into my body to occur, I needed to get some teeth removed. The long and short of it: I was on a fast track for radiation therapy. Getting radiation therapy for my throat is going to do a lot of harm to my teeth. Any dodgy teeth need to get yanked out of caution.
I was once told by a dentist that I had 33 teeth. He pointed out that that was the maximum amount of teeth (barring any genetic abnormalities, I assume) a human being could have in their head.
Now they're 'extracting' (such a prettier word than 'yanking') 7 of those out of my head: All 4 wisdom teeth, and a few molars for good measure.
It took 2 sessions. The first one was the worst, because one of those teeth took drilling to make it happen. Drilling out a tooth, with no more anesthetic than Novacaine (or however it's spelled) was damn well and downright brutal. If you'd like to simulate the experience without actually having teeth removed: Get whatever device you have that vibrates at a high pitch. Press that device against your temple for a bit. That's the sound you'd hear. Now, in your imagination, add in crunching sounds, like when you eat crunchy chips or doritos. Oh and while all this is happening, there's no way I can think of to simulate this, but there's a person THAT IS NOT YOU manipulating the positions of both your jaw, and your head.
It was weird. Didn't hurt a whole lot (thank you Novacaine gods), but was not comfortable and I kept getting told to relax my jaw, my tongue, or both.
I will say, because of my weird sense of humor, my masochism, or both: The oral surgeon would play music during these sessions. I didn't get to pick the music (that's fine by me, I would only have kicked up a fuss if it was country. Otherwise, my tastes are eclectic - more on this when I write about the Radiation experience, spoiler alert). However, during the second session, it JUST SO HAPPENED that one of the songs that came up was Queen's 'Another One Bites the Dust' and the surgeon got annoyed he had to pause when I started laughing, and I couldn't explain WHY I was laughing until the whole thing was done and I could sort of speak again (no foam block spacer between my teeth, still droolingly slurring in speech though). The assistant said she immediately figured out why, but the surgeon still didn't seem to get it fully.
Yeah, good times had by all.
Anyway, that was the next step: Getting bad teeth removed. Plus I no longer have maximum teeth.
The next step was getting the weird flouride tray thing. I had to go to another general dentist for that, and as has so far happened with EVERY STEP OF THIS PROCESS, a) nothing being done to murder the cancer yet, so the cancer is STILL trying to murder me, and b) nothing about any of what I went through is a 'this is normal' thing.

What are the signs of throat cancer, and what can be done to prevent them?
Throat cancer is a serious condition that requires timely recognition and proactive measures to prevent its onset. Being aware of the symptoms and adopting preventive strategies can significantly reduce the risk.
Signs of Throat Cancer
Throat cancer typically affects the pharynx, larynx, or tonsils. Common symptoms include:
Persistent Sore Throat: A sore throat that does not improve over time.
Hoarseness or Voice Changes: Unexplained changes in the voice, including hoarseness, lasting more than two weeks.
Difficulty Swallowing: Pain or discomfort while swallowing.
Unexplained Weight Loss: Sudden weight loss without changes in diet or activity.
Lumps or Swelling: Presence of lumps in the neck or throat area.
Chronic Cough: A cough that persists, sometimes accompanied by blood.
Ear Pain: Pain in the ears without an infection.
If you experience any of these symptoms, consulting a specialist at a reputable throat cancer treatment center is essential for early diagnosis and intervention.
Preventive Measures for Throat Cancer
Quit Smoking and Limit Alcohol Consumption: Tobacco and excessive alcohol use are leading risk factors. Quitting smoking and moderating alcohol intake significantly reduce risk.
Maintain Oral Hygiene: Regular dental check-ups and good oral care can help identify early signs of cancer.
Healthy Diet: A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains supports overall health and strengthens immunity.
HPV Vaccination: Certain throat cancers are linked to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccination can reduce the risk of HPV-related cancers.
Avoid Exposure to Harmful Chemicals: Minimize exposure to industrial or environmental toxins that can increase cancer risk.
Regular Screenings: Periodic health screenings can help in detecting abnormalities early, improving outcomes.
