So one of my all time favourite series is Criminal Minds, its very dear to me. So is Emily Prentiss, love her so much. (Like she is literally my favorite character, #1 spot, second goes to Derek) with that said I'm going to quote something Penelope says, which is that she doesn't like change. Neither do I, now I'm not saying I hate how they went about this (at the moment I'm the grey area, we'll see how it goes as it'll be like this for 5 seasons ;-;).
- Spoilers for seasons 6, 7 and a little of 8 as I just started it.
So during season 6, over the episodes 15 - 20, we get shown some of Emily Prentiss' backstory before she joined the BAU and part of that includes the Unsub (Unknow Subject) Ian Doyle (Who was a terrorist, who delt in weapons trades, etc). We're shown how they met, (Emily gets sent in to infiltrate under the alias Lauren Reynolds, to find out who Valhalla is, they suspect its Doyle) and why he's trying to kill her. The reasoning behind that is Doyle has a son, Declan, who he trusted very few to know he existed. After Ian is arrested Emily faked the deaths of Declan and his caretaker Loiuse and Ian believes they're dead, so when he eventually gets out of jail he goes to hunt down the people responsible for putting him away. I personally really love the Ian Doyle arc, how both characters are portrayed, and their relationship, like how it got to what it was, etc. Overall very well done.
Emily eventually goes out on her own to confrot Ian and she gets kidnapped and interrogated, he also brands/tattoos her on the chest using how the South Koreans give tattoos. She is rescued by the team but she gets stabbed with a chunked of wood in the stomach. Hotchner and JJ decide that to keep her safe she has to die, so they fake her death and she disappears to Paris with passports and identities for her own safety.
At the start of season 7 she comes back and reveals to the team she is infact not dead and they continue they're investigation into who took Declan and killed Louise. (They have Ian in custody by this stage) and start to work with him on who could of taken his son. At the end of that same episode they rescue Declan but Ian gets shot and dies infront of him. I was actually sad that he died. Though out season 7 Emily deals with what happpened to her and her death, or trys too. Clyde Easter who was her old boss when she worked for interpool and also operation valhalla. Easter offers Emily a job in London which she tells Derek about and we don't find out she does take the job until the first episode of season 8, which leads into my next point.
Alex Blake, I don't like her to put it bluntly. (Nothing to do with the actress) Like don't get me wrong, obviously the team needs another member but to me she can't fill the hole Emily leaves. I know she's not supposed to and that Paget Brewster (Emily Prentiss's actress) wanted to do something else at the time. I don't like how Blake is introduced or how she acts towards the team during their first case, she seems dismissive or to me feels like she knows better with how to handle situations better then a team whose members have worked together for years.
Blake might grow on me, I'm doubtful but I shall see where it goes as I'm stuck with her for 5 seasons before the queen comes back.
But that concludes my rant about that part of Criminal Minds for now. I'll making more posts about Emily and Ian for sure.
