Time heals all wounds is a well-known saying but Martha disagrees. In fact, she hates this saying with a vengeance and how can she not, having lost her entire world on what should have been a happy night with her beloved family? Years have passed since that fateful night in Crime Alley but her grief did not lessen nor become easier to handle. Her grief festered like an open wound, the shock of having lost their only child causing an irreparable rift between husband and wife. In the months that passed after Bruce's demise, Martha became more and more lost in her grief. Thomas focused on hunting down the murderer of their son while Martha descended to a slow madness and while their relationship had been loving, the loss of their son split them deeper than their inevitable divorce. Neither parent gained the support they needed in those crucial days and by the time Thomas had found Joe Chill, it was far too late to save the last vestiges of Martha's sanity. It's been years since the Waynes split but longer than that was the sound of a single gunshot ringing in that dingy alleyway, of Bruce's last breath as he clutched his mother's hand with cold fingers. It was in that moment that time ceased to exist for Martha, unable to move on since.
