Yesterday I watched Help! I'm A Fish and I had a good time! Chuck's seriousness and Fly's upbeat attitude made me think of Eddy M and Ravin respectively.
That movie is SO bizarre. I showed it to a friend a couple of weeks ago, so I watched it twice now, and we both kept screaming at all the emotional whiplash scenes jfksjhfdjh
I think I see what you mean about Eddy M and Ravin being like Chuck and Fly. Especially in the context of your headcanon where they had a rough childhood. They're not much like those characters in my version though.
Eddy M is a rude moody teen who is very matter-of-fact and headstrong - he's a 13-year-old who thinks he knows everything, and he will let you know that with sassy remarks and comebacks.
Ravin is definitely upbeat and more positive but I wouldn't call her Eddy's opposite because she is equally a smartass. She is just very jokey, self-aware nerd face emoji about it. She'll go "errrrmm, ACTually ☝" whenever she thinks she's right about something or when she just wants to annoy you. That's a good descriptor actually; instead of being rude the normal teenage way like Eddy, she is annoying - intentionally. It's a bit and she fully commits.
Dunno how to better describe them lol
Since I know you'll appreciate, I'm sharing a small chunk of my "Floyd runs into the techno troll and their kids" wip under the cut. It's been sitting and collecting dust for a while now because I have no idea how to finish it, but you can get a bit of an idea of what I imagine these two kids being like:
(for context, Floyd is helping Bruce at the bar and guess who happens to visit? And Floyd goes to take an order from them because he is a dumbass and needs too long to realize who he's talking to... The techno troll and Floyd have a private talk, it goes poorly and the techno troll lets him know that he doesn't want him to meet the kids or let them know who he is, and then Floyd hides behind the bar going full blown emo mode... (Also this is an unfinished draft so there might be some klunky parts, idk, I don't feel like editing it rn but I'm also very self conscious about my writing in general so I need to point this out 😬))
. . .
Floyd felt an intense misery wash over him. He really was a fuck up.
He stared at his feet for who knows how long (Maybe he had begun to dissociate?) when the faint sound of light feet stopping nearby made him look up.
Couldn’t this family gathering end already???
He nearly choked on his saliva while standing up in a desperate attempt to find something to busy himself with and not deal with this.
“Uh, h-hi, random kids I don’t know.”
He gave up at the sight of the empty sink with nothing to wash, and carefully looked at the two kids like they were going to bite him from any sudden movements. He probably shouldn’t stare too hard but that was what he ended up doing while taking in their appearance.
“How dumb do you think we are?” the boy—Edwin said with the distinct attitude and mannerism of a brash teen.
“From one to ten,” Ravin added quickly after and much more cheerily, while she pulled a small journal from her hair. She clicked her gel pen and pressed it against the paper in preparation. “Be honest.”
Floyd was a bit dumbfounded to be honest. “... What?” He straightened a little where he was still leaning against the sink and not facing them fully.
“Is on the slower side…” Ravin said out loud while scribbling the words down.
“We have to do this fast,” Edwin explained impatiently and with uncanny matter-of-fact-ness. “Dads think we went to the bathroom.”
“Uh… Do what fast?”
Ravin spoke up while staring at her journal: “How would you describe yourself?”
“What’s your favorite song?” asked Edwin.
"Would you say your hair is white and pink or white and red? And since when is it white? Dad never mentioned that."
“Do you think the words ‘drug addict hobo’ accurately describe you?”
“What’s better, hardcore or emo?”
“I told you it’s not emo!”
"Do you have any health history we should be aware of?"
“If you were a bug, what type of bug would you be?
"Do we have any other siblings?"
Floyd’s eyes grew wide from the onslaught of questions. “Whoa, whoa, slow down!” Then reluctantly he added “One at a time, please.” without even realizing he invited them into a conversation.
Edwin looked at his sister. “What was the first one?”
“How would you describe yourself? Three words.”
Floyd didn’t like the first question.
He should probably try thinking of positives…
“Uh…”
“Uhm…”
Panic.
“I’m a good singer. Well, I used to be…”
“That’s your personality?" Edwin deadpanned. "Singing?”
“I’ll just write down: bad self-image, bad under pressure, bad at understanding questions.”
"Those aren't personality traits either, sis."
"Fine! Unconfident, anti-equanimous, intelligently-impaired. There."
"Next question?"
“What’s your favorite song?”
Floyd's mouth was hanging open. He was pretty sure he just got called an insecure some-big-word idiot.
"Hello? We have a time limit. What's your favorite song?"
“...T-That’s a hard question," he fumbled for words, "there’s so many songs, it would be impossible to choose.”
Ravin looked into her notepad with a sigh and jotted down: “Indecisive. Gives flakey vibes.”
Floyd didn’t know how to respond to that either. Would it be weird if he got upset? Because he was definitely offended. But then again maybe he deserved this. Like some kind of delayed karma.
“If you were a bug, what type of bug would you be?”
Floyd thought about it, trying to come up with some type of direct answer at least for this question. “Hmm… A grig, maybe?”
Edwin made a face. “What the heck is a grig?”
Ravin seemed to have an idea. She wrote down: “An old soul. Depressed.”
“That’s the opposite of a grig!”
“Have you heard of reverse self-awareness?”
“No…?”
“Probably ‘cause I just made it up. But the term kinda suits you." She scratched her scalp with the dull end of her pen."I think?”
Floyd, still feeling absolutely lost in the whole situation, continued to stare mutely.
Edwin was watching him judgingly. "You think there's any awareness there at all?"
Ravin gave a vague hum before getting back on track. "What do you do for a living?"
"Rae, don't waste our time with stupid questions. It's obvious what he does."
Maybe, Floyd thought, he could finally impress them with something. "I'm a musician, actually."
"Yeah okay, music boy." Edwin replied without missing a beat. "Is the apron a new fashion accessory I don't know about?"
Floyd’s mouth hung open (if it ever even stopped hanging). These kids were savage…

I’m not sure if I should ask this to you, or Auren’s admin. But: Has Gwen ever talked about other characters before? If not, hypothetically— How would Auren react to Gwen talking about any of the other canon characters/ocs?
❆ You can ask either of us!!! I decided to do Richter, with the addition of Ryuuto ( @fruit-of-infidelity ) bc not only does Gwen have different ways of talking about them— Auren’s DRASTICALLY different reactions to Gwen talking about them are hilarious to me. 😭
Gwen basically uses Auren as their talking outlet. So y’know. During their regular visits to Vibora territory,Gwen just sorta rambles about all that’s happened. So they’ve likely gone from COMPLAINING about Richter. Y’know being grumpy about the way he acts, how cruel he is, how they wish for some piece and quiet and whatnot.
And Auren ALREADY doesn’t like him, (which the reason as to why is fucking HILARIOUS) so its expression is just: “🙄😐”
But don’t think it didn’t notice that slight inflation in Gwen’s tone when they started talking about his kid 🤨. Like Gwen of all people being interested in someone? ENTERTAINED? BY SOMEONE ELSE? 🤨 Auren really whipped it’s head around like:
“say sike rn.”
especially since it’s Richter’s kid bro. like the same man gwen was just complaining about 🤨 eye rolling, slumped posture, not a vivid expression in sight? oh but NOW all of a sudden they’re posing some interesting conversation, being expressive and engaging 🤨 AND FOR WHO? THE MAN’S KID? Wack 🙄✋
Nah but again. Auren already (jokingly) dislikes Richter bc they think he’s boring, too serious, AND he has no pizazz to his wardrobe. AUREN THINKS HE’S DEPRESSING 😭✋. So hearing Gwen talk with so much interest about Ryuuto really gave it whiplash 😭 (it would def also get really jealous. bc why can’t gwen talk about IT like that 🤨 even though they do but auren’s ignoring that point—)
ANYWAYS I HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION!!! But also feel free to ask @sincerest-aa , if you’d like a different POV 💪😎
BUT THIS IS ALSO *IF* GWEN WERE TO TALK TO AUREN ABOUT THESE TWO TOGETHER. Gwen already rambles on about Richter since both they and Auren know him. I mainly added Ryuuto to give some perspective on diff characters 😞💪 (and auren would have the funniest reactions to these two. such DRASTICALLY different emotions for characters who are literally related is hilarious to me. )
and ofc Ava im so sorry for the random tag pls forgive me 🙇🙏🤲 i hope you don’t mind me using your boy for reactions like these— IF ITS A PROBLEM THOUGH DONT HESITATE TO TELL ME. ❆
#ask.stuff#anonymous#((auren thinking richter’s boring#((then theres me WORSHIPING THE MAN#((also gwen just#((‘yeah anyways so his KID right—‘#((aint nothing like frolicking with your cowoker’s kid ☝️#((NAH BUT FR AUREN WAS REALLY LIKE ‘repeat that for me?’#gwen exicor#auren archambault#richter sakamaki#sakamaki richter#ryuuto sakamaki#sakamaki ryuuto

Roswell RN ep 12 – Is bad writing the bug or the feature ?
I keep watching genre shows – for all the silly, shallow reasons – the beautiful people, the escapism, the entertaining factor of it all , but I also watch them for better reasons – interesting, original premises, interesting characters, new ways of looking at things, lighter ways of speaking about hard things.
So when a show is about ghosts, vampires, aliens and the lot, there is a build in feature of silliness … I love it when there is, at least, a small percent of tongue in cheek writing going on, a small nod from the show that it knows to not take itself completely serious. But being self aware that you are not aiming to be Tarkovsky, does not mean free license to shit all over logic, to screw continuity, to make it seem that you do not remember your own story, to make the conversations between people seem forced and cringy.
So I guess what I am asking myself is – is bad writing in genre shows a bug or a feature? I have no connection to tv channels and I am wondering how much freedom the writers have. But even with a predetermined framework, even when censorship exists, even when a certain level of drama is demanded – is it really impossible to make it seem organic, to make it all cohesive, to thrive for the realness of human connections and relationships even if we get to also deal with demons, aliens, warlocks and such?
For me the series that I watch are divided in 3 – the ones that are about realism and from which I demand that, since that is what they claim to do ( The wire being my all time favourite in this category), the ones that are complete and utter crap, but the level of crap is so high that it only makes my giggle continuously, I have no demands of this type of series, except outrageous entertainment and if at all possible somebody to ogle ( series like The chilling adventures of Sabrina comes to mind in this category) and the last category – the one in between – the one where the characters draw you in, you can feel the potential, some real emotions but the plot remains quite silly ( Roswell NM is in this category).
What got me on this path of rambling was watching Roswell NM ep 12. Damn…so much hurt, so much tragedy going on there, so much potential for emotions being discussed, for trauma being analyzed and yet the episode finishes and I feel a lot like crying while face palming ( it is hard, trust me).
So here is what made me cry and what made me face palm...with a side of sarcasm and some profanity...
So we start with an exposition ( never the best device, but sometimes necessary ) about the aliens’ background …. I didn’t know it at the time, but this is actually a face palm moment, because the whole thing, almost word by word will be said again during the episode, only this time not as running background voice, but directly from Noah ….so in a 40 minutes episode, that contains the mass murder of an entire race, we get to hear the same, not all that revelatory words, twice …. mkay…
Then there is the M/M/I scene where they debate what to do and that felt pretty good, because you can really tell the different motivations and the different needs for each of them. Kyle/Liz interaction is also fun, light and it really flows.
The Malex scene at the junkyard is a facepalm moment – first of all because the writers made it so, while writing on twitter, with no indication in the actual story unfolding on the screen, that between the last interaction we have seen and this one 2 months passed … Seriously, if 2 months actually passed, something should have been said here – along the lines of “where the fuck have you disappeared for 2 month”. Also, we are to believe that Michael did not want to know shit more about the government conspiracy that puts him and his siblings at death risk … and now, supposedly 2 months later, Alex shows up out of the blue and is like – here is some info and also you’re hot, but not like really, but your temperature but also here is a smoldering “I would do you “ look for good measure. And for the fun twist, here is also Kyle for no particular reason…
Then we have the Is/Max/Noah/Liz interactions were we hear all the stuff from the beginning all over again, now with the added bonus that somehow since the conversation is in Is’s mind Noah can not lie.,, mkay… Even with the truth serum addendum, Noah’s story makes about zero sense and I face palm hard. The Liz/Is interaction feels good and organic … there is bitchiness that we know is trade mark Isobel, but also vulnerability and Liz lends an ear and some good advice. Honestly I feel like the scenes with Noah/Max/Is/Liz were somewhat repetitive… some of the things were necessary, but overall a lot of time was lost with no good enough pay-off either emotionally or as advancing the story.
Radom appeance from Cam. I just loved her character through out the story. She has been the right amount of funny, badass, vulnerable, good looking and helpful. If the writers didn’t have an arc for her, beyond what went on so far, I feel good about her departure….it’s hella better than keeping here around with 3 lines and no purpose.
I have to give it to the writers, the interaction among the women of the series has been good and has been consistent. They are not all bitches or all goody two shoes. But while sometimes butting heads, they came through for each other and I am here for that.
The boys arrive at the prison. Kyle has some funny lines, which are genuinely funny and I would have appreciated them so much more if not for WTF I was experiencing from the previous interactions.
Back at the prison it all makes as much sense as pineapple on pizza. High security facility with aliens in it and yet the boys enter with no problem and without alerting any alarms… we have some interaction between Alex and his brother, which I appreciated... I liked the lines, the tension, the background offered about Alex’s life ( see, it can be done without flashback and exposition … yeyyy writers)… but again it’s like the prison has 3 people working there and yet, somehow they developed kickass technology … mkay…
Kyle has the silliest conversation with random army girl … he learns about his father death, actually important for the story, but how the whole scene comes to be is like it’s written in kindergarten… dear lord… how the hell in the prison with 3 people, a guy appears and random army girl is not all that alarmed.
I really wanna know what is the reason and what is the pay-off of making Michael be the initiator of the demise of his mother and what is left of his race? WTF???
Then comes the Malex scene. Damn…. I loved the point of the scene but the execution was face palm level ( not the acting, the acting was top notch and the only thing that help sell the scene ). But this is the pivotal scene of the episode… damn… cut some of the other stuff that had no purpose and really sell us Michael trying heart and soul to save his family, the urgency of the whole situation and how they really had no other choice …. Because honestly, if it weren’t for how talented Vlamis and Blackburn were, the “my mom said run “would have made me giggle.
And after the “you’re my family speech” Alex says nothing to Michael and drives into the sunset with Kyle … it’s been so hard to face palm while the script gave me whiplash … seriously…
And you know, I actually like the conversation between Alex and Kyle at the end… I loved the point of it, what it actually says and how it gives us a little more about Alex … but fucking hell, it is ill placed … because we are to believe Alex let Michael to just drive alone and go wherever the fuck after witnessing the murder of his mother and the rest of his race …. What the actual fuck? Where there no people with writing abilities in the room at that moment?
And then we have the clusterfuck that is the interaction between Max and Michael and I don’t even have fucks to give ….
Really? Really? Were the writers in some sort of race to the finish? Did they not get the chance to look over everything one more time and fix the plotholes ? How come they manage some great lines and interactions and then they fuck up epically ? Is it mandatory ?
