the solitaire community is gonna kill me for this but some of the fans make me so mad. it’s not even justifiable, i know it’s just a book but this book means so much to me 😭

i hate when people insinuate that tori was lying to herself when she was talking to michael and clarified that it was in a friend way. They are friends. They were always friends first, and it was extremely hard for her character to establish, and she finally did and was finally comfortable with it and people decide that it’s a fully romanced based thing. When she openly clarifies that something is meant in the context of friendship, i see people post stuff like “ohhhh sureeeeee, that was definitelyyyy friendship”

Yes? It was? Because this story so isn’t a romance to the point where it says “This is not a love story” on the cover? Istg, i love a lot of osemanverse fanbases but the tumblr solitaire one kinda drives me insane.

The story is about mental health and the conflicts of the Solitaire pranks. A romantic plot in this story is a side plot. If you think that Sprolden is the main focus of Solitaire, respectfully, take ten large steps away from me.

Maybe it’s just because i’m bad at social cues, but when first reading Solitaire, i didn’t realize that Tori and Michael were a romantic thing until they kissed. And I truly think that’s how it was meant to be. Because the base of everything for them was their friendship.

Does Alice write romance amazingly well? Yes. Should you dismiss Tori’s platonic feelings for Michael due to the fact that they also share romantic interest? Not unless you are a safe distance away from me bc wtf

Like when someone talks about it all i can think is “Tell me you don’t know what a complex friendship is without telling me you don’t know what a complex friendship is.”

Romance vs Platonic

I understand Tori in the way she sees romantic relationships. How everyone craves it, desires it, they throw themselves head first into it and when it backfires they don't care they still stay in those relationships even if it hurts friends doing so is frustrating and stupid and you can hardly understand why people would do that just to have a partner when they already have friends. I understand the confusion when it comes to wanting to be held to want to hold someone's hand but also feel confusion when people talk about their dates and it just sounds like they and their partner went and hung out like friends do. There's this thing about romantic relationships that are so confusing because they are so CLOSE to platonic friendship relationships the differences? you kiss? you have sex? No, because asexuals exist and some don't want sex but are still in romantic relationships. SO WHY THE FUCK IS EVERYONE SO HELLBENT ON A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP IN THEIR LIVES?! For your brother to ask if you and your guy friend are together all because you hang out and he makes you happy? Isn't that something friends do? How do you know what makes a romantic relationship? How can you know when you're in one. Whats the difference?

"thanks" i replied, and then left

he couldve said anything, any words wouldve elicited the same reaction

because a passing remark is all i could expect

every day.

Solitaire by Alice Oseman

Guys. I have listened to the solitaire audiobook all the way through, everyday for the past two weeks. I’ve been feeling my mental health plummet into the ground, and this book makes me feel seen. I don’t feel alone. Tori and Michael are so real and relatable and I love their friendship and their love so much. Alice really knew what she was doing when she was writing this novel. It’s so well written and every word is so important. Idk. That’s all I wanted to say ig. I love this book so so much.

i just realized the cover of solitaire says "this is not a love story" and tao in season 2 mentions the movie 500 days of summer which starts with the line "this is not a love story".

Am I crazy or is it all connected?
